Technical characteristics of the car Ford Focus I, II and III. Ford Focus I - model description Ford Focus I owners reviews

Automobile Ford Focus, which replaced "", began to be produced in Germany and Spain since 1998. A year later, the production of this model began in the United States and Mexico, and in 2002, Focus entered the assembly line of a new plant in Vsevolzhsk, Leningrad Region.

The car was offered with sedan, hatchback (three- and five-door) and station wagon bodies. Ford Focus equipped gasoline engines 1.4 (75 hp), 1.6 (101 hp), 1.8 (114 hp) and 2.0 (130 hp). The 1.8-liter turbodiesel had versions with a capacity of 90 and 116 hp. With.

In 2002, "charged" versions of the Focus ST170 and Focus RS appeared. The ST modification had a two-liter Duratec engine under the hood, boosted to 170 hp. with., and "ereska" (of which only 4500 pieces were produced) was equipped with a turbocharged version of the same engine with a capacity of 215 hp. With.

With the advent of the second Focus in 2004, the production of first-generation cars in Europe ceased, and in the American market this model was sold until 2007. The American version of the car was equipped with petrol engines of 2 and 2.3 liters.

2nd generation, 2004

The second generation car debuted in 2004. Appeared in the list of body types, and under the hood of European versions - new turbodiesels with a volume of 1.6 and 2 liters. On the Russian market, the Ford Focus was offered with petrol engines 1.4 (80 hp), 1.6 (100 and 115 hp), 1.8 (125 hp) and 2.0 (145 hp), as well as 1.8 -liter turbodiesel with a capacity of 115 liters. With.

"Hot" hatchback Ford Focus ST received a five-cylinder turbocharged engine with a volume of 2.5 liters, and in the RS version, the same engine was boosted to 305 “horses”. In 2010, a 345-horsepower special version of the RS500 was produced with a run of 500 cars.

In 2008, the model was restyled and was produced in this form until 2011. In China, this car is still produced by the Changan-Ford joint venture.

For the American market, from 2008 to 2011, the Michigan plant produced its own version of the Focus, which was significantly different from the European one. This car had versions with sedan and coupe bodies, and under the hood it had a two-liter engine with a capacity of 140 hp. With.

Who wouldn't want to drive "Car of the Year 1999" or play the role of the unforgettable racer Colin McRae, who conquered the rally tracks behind the wheel of the Ford Focus? Especially considering that the purchase of this car is not associated with sacrifices: a functional and attractive body, an acceptable amount of interior space, quite successful and economical engines. It also encourages you to buy. great suspension, thanks to which the car behaves as if glued to the asphalt.

Unfortunately, most offers secondary market are not in best condition. A few years later it turned out that the Ford Focus 1 has problems with body corrosion.

Carefully check the equipment of the instance you are interested in. Modern appearance does not mean appropriate equipment - even after restyling, a car can have only one airbag and power steering. ABS and power accessories were not included in the list of basic equipment.

There is an opinion that the first generation Ford Focus engines are not suitable for the installation of LPG gas equipment. This is partly true. Plastic manifolds were susceptible to air bursts in the intake tract, but these disappeared with the advent of multipoint port injection. However, this is not a reason to neglect valve adjustment every 40,000 km, which will require about 5,000 rubles.

What can you do yourself?

timing belt

The process of replacing the timing belt in 16-valve 1.4- and 1.6-liter gasoline engines and diesel engines is not too complicated. The repair kit consists only of a toothed belt and tension roller. In the case of petrol 1.8 and 2.0 liters, two or three rollers are already installed, depending on the year of manufacture and version. The services use a special tool to fix the shafts, but you can get by with "folk" methods. Unfortunately, 1.6-liter Focuses often come to car services with symptoms of poor performance of the power unit. On examination, it is found that the timing belt has jumped one tooth: the engine is running, but it is shaking, and it does not develop full power.

brakes

Replacement brake pads and discs or brake fluid does not require complex operations, special tools and great knowledge. Trouble can arise when trying to replace rusty tubes: practice and additional tools will come in handy to unscrew rusted tips.

All Ford Focus I have ventilated brake discs on the front axle (minimum thickness 20 mm) and rear non-ventilated discs (minimum thickness 8 mm) or drums ( maximum diameter 204 mm). Brake fluid(about 0.7 L DOT 4) should be changed every two years. The thickness of the pads and discs (a caliper will come in handy) must be checked at least once a year.

Power steering

All the first Focuses were equipped with power steering. Maintenance of the power steering is limited to tightness control (potential leaks - pipeline joints) and periodic fluid replacement.

As a working fluid, 0.5 liters of branded Ford S-M2C195A are used, which can be replaced with a fluid that is close in its characteristics to transmission oils for automatic transmissions such as Transmax Dex III or ATF Multivehicle.

Engine oil

The capacity of the lubrication system for gasoline engines is 3.8 liters for a 1.4-liter engine and 4.3 liters for all others. There are no special requirements regarding the properties of the oil. It is enough to adhere to the class SH (API) or A1 / B1 (ACEA) and viscosity 5W-30 or 5W-40.

In the case of diesel units, it is necessary to prepare 5.6 liters of oil with a viscosity of 5W-30 class CF (API). Since turbodiesels were not equipped with a particulate filter, there are no strict requirements regarding the special properties of the oil. When replacing it, you must also install a new one. oil filter, which in gasoline 1.6-2.0 liters is the same as in diesel versions.

Ford recommends checking the engine oil level frequently and changing it once a year. In addition, there is also a mileage limit - 15,000 km. Given the age of the car and difficult operating conditions, it is better to reduce the recommended oil change period to at least 10 thousand km. The maximum allowable oil consumption must not exceed 0.5 l/1000 km. The distance between the MIN and MAX marks on the dipstick corresponds to: in gasoline engines - 0.75 liters, and in diesel engines - 1.5 liters. In winter, it is better to keep the oil level low, for quick warm-up, and in summer - a high level - for better cooling.

The process of changing the oil itself is simple, and the filter is easily accessible from below. However, do not forget that used oil and an old filter are very dangerous for the environment and should not be thrown into the regular trash. It is advisable to give the waste for recycling. Unfortunately, at present such an opportunity exists only in a small number of cities in Russia.

Cooling system

Checking the tightness and operation of the system must be carried out regularly, preferably at the same time as checking the oil level. Coolant leaks are often caused by the plastic thermostat housing.

Coolant replacement is required after 5 years or 100,000 km. Ford recommends a fluid called Motorcraft Super Plus 2000, but general purpose coolants such as Radicool NF Castrol can also be used.

Note: power units, depending on the type, have different thermostat opening temperatures. The water pump is driven by a drive belt (not timing), which is worth having in the spare parts kit.

The volume of the cooling system: gasoline 1.4 and 1.6 liters - 5.5 liters; 1.8 and 2.0 l - 6.0 l; diesel - 6.5 liters.

Computer diagnostics

Ford Focus of the first generation, as a rule, did not give rise to visits to diagnostic centers. However, diagnostics can be very useful in troubleshooting not only the engine, but also assistance systems - ABS or ESP. To read errors, the universal KTS device, which is available in many car workshops, is sufficient. Therefore, a visit to an authorized Ford service not required. The diagnostic connector can be found near the driver's feet on the panel under the cover.

VIN number

The identification number is located under the windshield (visible from the outside along with information about the number of airbags) and on the floor - at the feet of the front passenger. It is worth noting that according to VIN number, unlike many companies, Ford allows you to learn not only model year, but also the exact date of production: year and month.

Marking:

WFO - manufacturer code (Ford Germany),

body type: A - 5-door, B - 3-door, F-sedan, N - station wagon,

XX - unused characters,

G - country of manufacture (G - Ford Werke Aktiengesellschaft, Cologne, Germany), C - assembly (C - Saarlouis / Langley),

D - (D - Focus),

A - body version (repeat),

W - year of issue (W - 1998, X - 1999, Y - 2000, 1 - 2001, 2 - 2002, 3 - 2003, etc.),

P - month of production (here P is August, but the envy code is from the year of manufacture),

12345 - serial number of the body.

Chassis

Everyone knows about the need to adjust the geometry of the suspension. But in the case of the Ford Focus, the rear suspension must also be adjusted. The process itself is not complicated - for this, there are eccentric bolts on the auxiliary beam that secure the wishbones. Unfortunately, the bolts get very rusty and have to be cut off to adjust. Therefore, before the procedure, it is necessary to purchase new bolts in advance.

The front wheel toe-in must be set to 0 and the rear wheel toe-in to 2.5 mm (tolerance +/- 1 mm). The reason for the departure of the angle of inclination of the wheels (camber), as a rule, is the wishbones of the suspension.

cabin filter

The cabin filter is recommended to be changed once a year. His low price allows you to do it without thinking. The filter can be accessed under the hood, next to the bulkhead (right). To get to it, you must carefully release the latches on the mounting plate and bend up the plastic cover. After replacing the filter, everything falls into place. For all modifications of the model, the same cartridge with a size of 350x167x29 mm is suitable. On the market you can find many alternatives of various brands, both conventional and coal.

Air filter

During the annual Maintenance it is enough to monitor the condition of the filter and clean it thoroughly. You can use a compressor for this. Ford recommends changing the filter every 45-60 thousand km. Fortunately, it is very cheap - only about 250 rubles, so in case of any doubt about its performance, it is better not to hesitate and replace it. The filter has dimensions of 265x147x47 mm and is suitable for almost all power units, with the exception of the Focus ST.

To replace the filter, you will need a socket wrench, which you need to unscrew 4 screws around the perimeter of the housing. During replacement, thoroughly clean the housing air filter with cloth or compressed air. After installing a new cartridge, pay attention to the location of the seal - a loose or deformed seal does not perform its important functions.

Tires

In models with an engine up to 130 hp. 14" wheels on 5" wide steel rims or 15" wheels on 6" wide alloy wheels are used. Sport versions are shod with 17- or 18-inch wheels. When there are 3 people in the car, it is necessary to set the pressure in the front and rear wheels 2.2 atm. (0.22 MPa). When fully loaded, it is necessary to increase the pressure on the front axle to 2.3 atm. (0.23 MPa), and on the back up to 3.1 atm. (0.31 MPa).

Lamps and fuses

One of the major changes in the 2001 Ford Focus upgrade was the headlights. In pre-styling cars, one H4 60/55 lamp was used for low and high beams. After that, the H7 lamp was responsible for the low beam, and both 55W for the far H1. The lamps in foglights have also changed: H1 gave way to H11, in ST 170 - H3. Xenon was available as an option.

Access to the headlight bulbs is difficult, but not to the point of hopelessness. First you need to remove the metal latches, then the black cover, and then you can already remove the light bulb. Most other lamps are only accessible after the housing has been removed. Although the glass reflector screws are easily accessible, do not try to unscrew them - another screw is located in the bend and is difficult to get to.

The Focus uses medium sized flat fuses. The color indicates the current that the fuse can withstand: brown - 7.5 A, red - 10 A, blue - 15 A, yellow - 20 A, white - 25 A, light green - 30 A, orange - 40 A. And remember that a blown fuse often indicates a fault that needs to be found.

What breaks in Ford Focus 1?

Even great-looking specimens can further unbalance their owner with quite significant flaws - so a thorough inspection before buying is a must! Compact Ford not too reliable car. Its main problem is rather rapidly progressive corrosion, which can be found on the edges of the doors, inside the thresholds, on the suspension elements and on exhaust system. Particular attention should be paid to the condition of the brake hoses and tubes.

Gasoline units, like Endura diesels, are quite reliable. In Duratorq diesels, the problems relate to a dual-mass flywheel (a resource of about 150 thousand km), a starter, injectors, an exhaust gas recirculation valve (unfortunately, it is combined with an aluminum manifold). The suspension holds up well. Russian roads, and its complete overhaul with original spare parts will cost 60,000 rubles. Repair will be much cheaper if you change only individual elements, and not the entire lever assembly.

Rust attacks from behind

While the front of the body resists corrosion well, its rear end gives up quickly. Wheel arches and rear sills are the most common spots for rust. If you come across a copy without traces of corrosion, buy it without hesitation. The rear ones are also subject to corrosion. brake pipes which is not safe.

Corrosion on elements such as stabilizer roll stability or brackets for attaching stabilizer bushings, not terrible. But it would seem simple replacement stabilizer gum turns around using a grinder and a set of new staples.

Steering gear

The steering mechanism can become a source of trouble in two cases: fluid leakage at the junction of pipelines and the appearance of play in the steering rack. The recovery process, depending on the service, will require from 10 to 30 thousand rubles.

fuel injection system

A diesel engine with a common rail system can cause many problems. One of them: the failure of the high pressure pump leaks in the fuel system.

Branch pipe turbine-intercooler

The problem is only the TDCi version. Loss of power and soot from exhaust pipe have a prosaic reason - damage to the pipe connecting the turbine to the intercooler (intercooler). The branch pipe (about 1000 rubles) can be replaced independently.

Multi-link suspension

The secret of ideal behavior lies in the multi-link rear suspension. Unfortunately, the cost of its maintenance is quite high. After 100,000 km, backlash appears in the chassis. The transverse arm often breaks first. Replacing several levers is not so expensive, but you will have to fork out well for all the elements - more than 10,000 rubles. It is not so easy to dismantle the levers of the system - the bolts are strongly seized.

Engines: typical problems and consumption?

Petrol 1.4 and 1.6 of the Zetec-SE family

The aspirated 1.4-liter debuted earlier in the Fiesta, where it had slightly different parameters. The 1.6-liter engine came out with the Focus. While the 1.6-liter does its job satisfactorily, the 1.4-liter is too weak. This is reflected in the market - there are few cars with a 1.4-liter engine. Both motors are reliable and easy to operate.

The 1.6-liter unit was developed by Japanese Yamaha engineers. It is an aluminum block with a 16-valve head, mechanical valve clearance adjustment and timing belt. The powertrain guarantees the perfect compromise between performance and fuel consumption. He is content with 8 liters of fuel per 100 km, which is not bad compared to competitors, but far from sensational. Sprint to hundreds takes 11.3 seconds. In the upper rev range, the motor lacks elasticity - it takes more than 20 seconds to accelerate from 80 to 120 km / h.

The 1.6 liter engine, even with high mileage (more than 200,000 km), does not show any signs of wear. In particular, there are no leaks and abnormal oil consumption.

Petrol 1.8 and 2.0 of the Zetec-E family

This offer is for the more demanding. Structurally, these are modernized engines of the old Mondeo. The Zetec-E family has a more massive design than the SE, also due to the cast-iron cylinder block. With frequent high loads, this solution extends the service life. Crankshaft and the connecting rods in the engines are the same. The difference in working volume is achieved due to the diameter of the cylinders.

Engines do not have typical faults, which are more often random: ignition coils, small oil leaks (defective oil plugs at the beginning of production), the need to flash the ECU (also the first Focuses).

The 1.8-liter version consumes an average of about 9 liters per 100 km, and acceleration to 100 km / h takes just over 10 seconds. The 2-liter engine is even less economical, but allows you to enjoy driving. For lovers of fast driving, sports versions of the ST 170 and ST are provided. The latter has an advanced design with forged pistons and connecting rods.

Diesel 1.8TDDi

The Endura series engines are Ford's first direct injection diesel engines. They use a classic rotary injection pump. The difference in power is achieved through different software. These diesels are forced to reckon with loud and not pleasant work. The reward will be - low cost of operation: the unit does not cause too much trouble. The weakest version accelerates to 100 km / h in 14.5 seconds and burns an average of 5.5 liters of fuel.

Diesel 1.8 TDCi Duratorq (Common Rail)

In the 21st century lovers diesel engines do not tolerate increased noise and weak dynamics. The standard is diesel with direct injection using a common rail system, which is supplied with fuel by a high pressure pump. Then it enters the injectors, which dose the fuel supply to the cylinders with incredible accuracy. The injection system is supported by an efficient variable geometry turbocharger and charge air cooler. It also uses a dual mass flywheel. Fortunately, Duratorq only complies with Euro-3 standards, and therefore does not have particulate filter. The result is good performance and reliability. The Endura cannot compete with the Duratorq in this respect. However, fuel system Delphi 1.8 TDCi is sensitive to fuel quality. In the event of its failure, the cost of repairing the injection system will be about 10,000 rubles.

The weakest version reaches 100 km/h in less than 12 seconds, the more powerful version in less than 11 seconds. The Duratorq's elasticity is better than the Endura's, with the former taking just 10.5 seconds to accelerate from 80 to 120 km/m, while the latter takes 22 seconds. Curiously, the average fuel consumption is more modern engine above - about 6.5 liters per 100 km. In addition, it requires a lot of troubleshooting costs.

The blocks of both TDDi turbodiesels are made of cast iron, which in the late 90s was considered a sign of deep conservatism. Motors have become a further continuation of the old and problematic 1.8 TD. Fortunately, the engineers managed to get rid of the main drawback - two timing belts. New engines have received a more reliable solution. The lower pulley of the crankshaft drives the injection pump through drive chain which theoretically has a lifetime. The camshaft, in turn, is connected to the injection pump by a short strap. The belt is able to withstand more than 100,000 km. But remember that if it breaks, the valves will be destroyed, so you should not forget about replacing. Attention! During production, Ford changed the shape of the teeth of the camshaft gear and belt. Please read the service documentation before replacing.

A typical drawback of Focus turbodiesels is a small resource of a dual-mass flywheel (about 100,000 km). The total cost of repairs can be about 25-30 thousand rubles. Another common problem is air leakage due to cracking of the intake pipes. The cost of repair is about 1000 rubles.

Transmission

The model range used two mechanical (MTX-75 and IB5) and one automatic transmission. Both manual transmissions are quite reliable, and IB5 is the most widely used. With age, the likelihood of wear of bearings and synchronizers increases. In IB5, 5th gears are the most vulnerable. They are located at the very top of the box, and therefore the loss of even 200 ml of oil "dehydrates" the gears, which leads to wear.

Automatic transmission 4F27E is quite hardy, and before the first major repair it lasts 250-350 thousand km. Solenoids are handed over a little earlier - on a segment of 150-250 thousand km. This is one of the few machines that can be sorted out without removing it from the car. For overhaul it will take about 50-70 thousand rubles.

American version

The Focus, after the first generation Mondeo, became Ford's next international model. In the US, he bore the name ZX3, ZX4, ZX5. The number means the number of doors. From a purely practical point of view, the American versions of the Focus are of little interest. Compact with a weak two-liter engine and automatic transmission gear is gluttonous and too expensive for a low level of comfort. Corrosion is another problem common to most cheap cars survivors of a journey across the ocean.

Test drive November 21, 2011 True Course (Focus 2.0 TDCi)

In the success of sales in the Russian market Ford Focus third generations no doubt. Our task is to identify all the advantages and disadvantages of new items in Russian conditions.

Test drive November 11, 2011 New level (Focus 1.6 125 hp)

Ford Focus III can be called without exaggeration one of the most anticipated new products this year in Russia. And no wonder, because for the domestic buyer, Focus of previous generations has become almost a standard that combines original design, good driving performance and reliability of a European car at an affordable price.

Rejuvenating apple (Focus 1.6 182 hp) Test Drive

The metamorphoses that have taken place with the people's Ford Focus are, without exaggeration, colossal. The car has progressed in all areas and threatens to rejuvenate the customer audience.

A quiet harbor ( Chevrolet Cruze Ford Focus,Hyundai Elantra,Kia Cerato,Nissan Tiida, Opel Astra,Renault Fluence) Comparison test

Russian market popular passenger cars has become so diverse and unpredictable that it no longer lends itself to any systematization. But this raging sea still has its own "safe haven". Cars for which stable demand remains, regardless of fashion, various incentive programs and other external factors. These are compact class sedans (segment C). In the published review, we will consider models priced from 500,000 rubles, and next time we will talk about more expensive compact sedans costing from 600,000 rubles per "base".

For the first time, a wide range of motorists managed to see the Ford Focus 1 at the Geneva Motor Show back in 1998. We can safely say that it was from that moment that the era of the Ford Escort model, which was rather outdated at that time, ended, which Ford itself proposed to replace. new focus. True, there is an opinion that the Ghia concept car presented by by Ford Motor Company back in 1991 at the same Geneva Motor Show. The 1998 Focus model had some design elements that were used in the concept car to present safety systems.

Be that as it may, looking ahead a little, it should be noted that the “change of generations” was more than successful, since the ford focus 1 managed to significantly overtake its predecessor in terms of popularity around the world in a relatively short period of time. Having appeared on the roads of Europe in 1998, already in 2002 he managed to successfully reach Australia. In 2001 - 2002, Ford Focus became the sales leader in automotive market Europe. True, even earlier, in 1999, the Ford Focus 1 American became the “Car of the Year in Europe”. In addition, in 1999 the car was awarded by the European Committee for Independent Crash Testing (Euro NCAP), which awarded four stars out of five possible for the overall passive safety the driver and passengers, as well as two out of four possible stars, the car received for pedestrian safety.

Surprisingly, this car became the "Car of the Year in the USA" a year later, in 2000. Already at that time, the company offered almost the entire range model range, starting with a three- and five-door hatchback and ending with the Ford Focus 1 station wagon option - Focus Turnier.

Focus 1: New Edge style exterior

One of possible causes increased customer interest in the new model famous brand, probably, is a number of innovations, both in terms of design and technical equipment of the car. In the exterior design, the designers continued the new philosophical concept of the company's new style - New Edge, or "New Edge". As a matter of fact, the designers had already carried out a “reconnaissance” a little earlier regarding the level of perception of this style by buyers, embodying it in the Ford Ka (1996) and Ford Cougar (1998) models. Apparently, "intelligence" showed acceptable results, which served as a motivator for continuing work in this direction.

The appearance of the first Focus turned out to be quite stylish, but also unusual, striking the imagination with a harmonious combination of sharp corners of the body with smooth, streamlined lines. The designers managed to bring together all conceivable geometric shapes, giving a triangular shape to the turn signal lights and placing round foglight wells nearby. Ellipses, trapeziums, sharp angles, curved and wide lines... It should also be noted that the opinions of auto critics are divided on this issue. Someone did not like the frankly radical design style at all from an overabundance of wide and curved lines. Be that as it may, buyers liked the design of the car, and, as you know, the best car is the one that manages to sell.

Depending on body version new ford differed in overall dimensions, only the clearance was identical ( ground clearance) equal to 170 millimeters. For example, the dimensions of the Ford Focus 1 hatchback are (length x width x height): 4342 x 1840 x 1497 millimeters. Wheelbase - 2640 millimeters. The dimensions of the sedan were (length x width x height): 4362 x 1698 x 1430 millimeters, and wheelbase 2615 millimeters. Accordingly, the volume luggage compartment. For example, in a Ford Focus 1 sedan, the useful volume of the trunk is 490 liters, in a hatchback, the volume of the luggage compartment varied depending on the position of the back of the rear sofa - from 385 to 1247 liters.

In 2001, the first Focus was the first restyling. As a result, the bumper received a removable relief strip, the radiator grille changed. The headlights were equipped with special sensors. In addition, xenon headlights were additionally used in the head optics block, the main and auxiliary bulbs were separated.

Focus 1: "plus" for space, "minus" for finishing materials

The Focus Salon received rather conflicting assessments. On the one hand, many buyers will certainly agree with the opinion that the car is the embodiment of the most advanced traditions of European design and ergonomics at that time. The interior of the Focus 1 is more spacious than its closest competitors, allowing five passengers including the driver to comfortably accommodate. Large seats are designed for fairly tall passengers. backs rear seats can be tilted to increase the amount of luggage space. On the other hand, new car became the object of sharp criticism for the quality of finishing materials. According to these parameters, Focus lost the palm to its closest rivals - Volkswagen Golf 4 and Opel Astra. Moreover, Golf significantly exceeds Focus I in terms of price parameters.

The rest of the critics' assessments are more neutral. The instrument panel, with its oval speedometer and tachometer, stands out for its classic layout, but that doesn't stop it from looking quite avant-garde, as does the center console. The small volume of the glove box (glove compartment) is compensated by a platform for small items, for example, mobile phone, in front of the gear lever. The seats also have small pockets.

In the basic configuration, the driver's and front passenger's seats are equipped with the simplest mechanical adjustment, traditional for those times: forward - backward and backrest angle. Other equipment includes power steering, as well as airbags for the driver and front passenger. More expensive configurations are distinguished by electric adjustment of the driver's seat in height and the possibility of installing an armrest. There is also an electrically adjustable steering column for reach and tilt.

For example, the Comfort package will please its owner with power windows for the front doors and air conditioning, central locking and remote opening of the tailgate. The Trend package is equipped with front fog lights, trunk light and leather-trimmed steering wheel. The wealthiest customers who purchase the Focus in the Ghia package will be able to use the full winter package including seat heating, windshield and mirrors, washer nozzles, electric adjustment of exterior mirrors, electric windows for all doors and central locking with remote control. In total, five trim levels were offered: Ambiente, Comfort, Trend, Ghia, Special Edition.

Focus 1: two pluses for handling and driving performance

At one time, the first Focus received high responses from the European press, not only for the spacious interior space and passenger comfort, but also for the typical Ford Focus 1 models. specifications. In particular, the unique design of the rear independent suspension. But first things first. New model from Ford Motor Company was equipped with several types of power units, among which were gasoline (from 1.4 to 2.0 liters) and diesel engines. american car by equipment power units somewhat different from its European clone.

If the "American" could have only one of the gasoline engines with a volume of 2.0 to 2.3 liters and a power of 110 - 172 Horse power s s automatic transmission, then in Europe the choice was presented more widely. The European Focus 1 was equipped with Zetec and Zetec-SE gasoline engines with a capacity of 75 - 130 horsepower and a volume of 1.4 to 2.0 liters, as well as diesel engine Endura TDDI 1.8 liter, offered in several power options: 75, 90 and 115 horsepower.

Somewhat later, for a rather short period (just over one year), this diesel engine was replaced by the Duratorq TDCI. It should be noted that all gasoline power units have already proved themselves positively on other Ford models, in particular, Zetec-SE engines with a volume of 1.4 and 1.6 liters were installed on Ford Fiesta and Ford Puma, 1.8 and 2.0 Zetec engines were equipped Ford Mondeo. Paired with these power units, a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission could be installed.

The main highlight technical equipment became a multi-link fully independent rear suspension of the Control Blade system, which replaced the traditional torsion beam for this class of cars. The traditional MacPherson strut suspension was installed in front. This combination provided the car with excellent stability at any speed.

P.S. Instead of an epilogue

It is known that each car has its own time. The time of the European Focus 1 stopped in 2004. His American "brother" was produced before 2007. The era of the Ford Focus 2 was coming.

Ford Focus I Owner Reviews

Ford Focus I, 2000

The car was originally chosen for the driver and one passenger. Therefore, the choice fell on a 3-door hatchback - the doors are large, no one will climb in from behind without asking. So, in the city, the 1.6 engine, combined with the “automatic”, no matter how scary, did not disappoint at all. At average speed movement (according to the computer) in 30 km 100 hp more than enough. And with the calm style of acceleration of most drivers, it is not difficult to leave among the first from a traffic light. At the same time, the Ford Focus I is perfectly controlled, the steering wheel has a clear feedback. Clear steering is complemented by effective brakes (even with rear drums) and ABS (definitely recommend), which works on time.

In short, Ford engineers don't get their money for nothing. A barrel of honey turned out, but you have to add a small fly in the ointment. So, from the minuses, I’ll note, I’ll note: when the air conditioner is on, the consumption in the city grows to 12 liters. And yet - there are a lot of them. You leave the entrance - and, without leaving the place, you can count 5 pieces in the yard. But the machine is liquid and the secondary price is very pleasant. So, the conclusion: if you are not worried about imaginary prestige, but quality and reliability are important, take the Ford Focus I. If the budget is important to you, do not pay for options that are again supposedly prestigious but not needed (climate control).

Advantages : handling, reliability, ergonomics

Flaws : increased price. Mass character.

Ford Focus I, 2000

Ford Focus I - the car is quite comfortable and pleasant. The landing is close to ideal, the driver's seat is adjustable in height, the steering wheel in height and reach, you can choose the right position. I would describe the landing as "normal". The view is good, the mirrors are spherical, but the distortion is not strong, the neighboring row is visible, but through the row the view is no longer enough, aspherical (more curved at the edges) mirrors would not interfere. Established glass - athermal. The dipped-beam bulbs constantly burned out, they shrugged at the service, nothing was found on the forums either. You can change the right one without problems, but to change the left one, you need to remove the battery, the box from it. The first time I did it, it took an hour, probably.

The engine always started without problems, consumption in the city of 10 liters. It should be noted that this 1.6 8-valve, unlike the 16 valve, “eats” only 92 gasoline. Instead of a timing belt - a chain, serviced at 150 t.km. The network writes that this modification is more reliable than the 16-valve one, I can’t comment on this in any way. At 70,000 km, it began to start badly, at some point it flatly refused, changed the candles, cleaned throttle valve and all is well. Very pleased with the combination of engine and gearbox. The set of speed is very uniform, without dips and accelerations out of place. The dynamics is sufficient for the city, but in general it is rather weak, competitors at "1.6" will be faster.

Advantages : comfort, design, handling, price.

Flaws : dynamics.

Ford Focus I, 2002

I bought the car from my friend, whose wife successfully drove it in the "home - kindergarten - shop" mode for a little less than 3 years. Actually, in part, that is why the choice fell on this car, because. I knew its history and mode of operation very well. What I liked: I have the so-called “winter” package installed, and this, I want to note, is one of the most useful features in our conditions. And although I keep my Ford Focus I in a heated underground parking lot and I don’t experience problems with the morning plant, nevertheless, sometimes it’s nice to start a car in a frosty winter, turn on the windshield heating, rear window and mirrors (the washer nozzles are also heated), sit in the heated seats, and after 2-3 minutes you can hit the road. Everything thaws and drains very quickly. No need to scrape glass in the cold.

Reliability: no surprises happened during the operation. It is difficult to say whose merit is here. I just regularly went through all the MOT, changed the oil and those. liquids, etc. Ford Focus I, due to the fact that maintenance is relatively inexpensive, makes it possible not to save on this. 65 thousand had to change the clutch. Usually, as far as I know from experience, this spare part “runs” much longer, about 100 thousand, no less. But in my case, apparently, the driving style of the predecessor affected. Although she drove carefully, I still think she “set fire” to the clutch - probably, she waited at the traffic lights at the clutch, but started off with too much gas. In general, I had to change, transmission slippage began to be felt when starting off.

Manageability: I will be brief here, everyone knows this. Focus is one of the best in this category in its class. Still, the heaped up “thruster” rear suspension and the properly designed front suspension do their job!

The biggest problem I've had with a Ford Focus I was replacing the left low beam bulb. The fact is that without removing the battery and the platform on which it is installed, it is simply impossible to get to the cover of the block headlight. You really need to work with the keys. For girls, this operation will be practically impossible without a trip to the service

Advantages : reliable, comfortable, unpretentious. Excellent handling. Inexpensive to maintain.

Flaws : noisy on the highway.

Ford Focus I, 2005

For those who want to take the Ford Focus I. MOT every 10 thousand km. Oil original 1400 rub. 5 liters. Oil filter from 350 rubles. Work on Bosch 400 rubles. Then we look at what needs to be changed or what the master will say, if you only believe him, otherwise they can wind it up. Brake pads not original from 900 rubles. (I put these, skated normally). The rear pads of the Ford Focus I go for a very long time, I did not change them and the previous owner did too. We immediately change the timing belt (it is very easy to twist the mileage on Ford), the replacement price is 3500 rubles. and my head doesn't hurt. Candles are also a budget of 200 rubles. a piece. In terms of chassis, everything is also budgetary, except for the rear linkage suspension - its replacement costs 20 thousand rubles. along with work, but she walks for a long time about 100 thousand km. The Ford Focus I thermostat is a weak point. Sometimes even less than 20 thousand km lives. I was changed under warranty (I took used cars in the salon), although they did not pay for the tow truck. LKP - weak spots trunk and doors. Chips are better to paint over immediately. Salon - for people of average height there will be enough space both in front and behind. With my height of 194, my back was numb on the "long distance". It’s better not to take a car with climate control, with age it begins to “be weird” (and the age is decent anyway), they only repair it at official dealers, and you know what the price tag is. The car loses power when the air conditioner is on significantly. So when overtaking it is better to turn it off. Engine 1.8 115 hp acceleration to 100 km - 10.7 sec. In its class (cars up to 2005 and price category) there were no equal Ford Focus I. In the city, you have enough power for your eyes, on the highway we confidently overtake in 3-4 gears. AT sharp turns the car enters confidently. The car provokes aggressive driving, so do not skimp and put good tires. On the highway 150 is confident, faster is possible, but not necessary. When you raise the speed, the engine does not squeal, but growls in a bass voice, as it should be. In terms of fuel consumption - city 11, if we heat 13-14. Route from 7 to 9. Gasoline 95th. If found a good option, then you can take the machine, spare parts are inexpensive and the masters know it by heart.

Advantages : inexpensive to maintain. Reliability. Comfort. Equipment. Encourages active driving.

Flaws : climate control.

Ford Focus I, 2003

I bought a Ford Focus I with 71,000 km on it. I am the third owner. I chose "Karisma", but there were all "killed". They were already leaving the dealer, as he suggested looking into the garage where the Ford Focus I was standing. The man looked under the hood, looked, sniffed, turned on the gas and said: "take it, only the bumper was painted, the rest is ideal." I drove to the club service. Suspension diagnostics, oil changed, consumables. As a result of the recommendation, the ignition coil cracked (it is possible to drive, but it is dangerous, the “brains” can burn out), and on the rear suspension, the replacement of silent blocks of trailing arms after 10-20 thousand km. Outwardly, I didn’t really like the Ford Focus I, of course, a pretty muzzle and clumsy stern, but now I’m used to it. It’s convenient for me in it (I’m 190 cm), I went to the Moscow-Adler sea alone (the rest without a license). The back was not tired, only the ringing in the ears was from poor sound insulation, a walkie-talkie and a radio tape recorder. Everyone has long known about the dynamics, with its mass of 1.6 it is not enough, and if there are passengers and air conditioning, you will have to forget about overtaking. Although, if you turn 4-5 thousand revolutions, it is quite frisky. At the moment, the mileage is 140 thousand km. I travel a lot, often to "long distance" and for work a lot around the city. THAT I do every 10 thousand, because I don't want something to break along the way. Of the work done: trailing arm silent blocks (“butterflies”) about 7 thousand with work, an ignition coil (5200 rubles), a clutch master cylinder leaked (3300 rubles), a half shaft bearing 2390 rubles, levers for a spring 2990 per piece. original (sat down on a concrete slab at speed). The clutch is still native, but it seizes at the end. Decide for yourself whether it is a lot or a little for a 7-year-old Russian assembly.

Advantages : reliability. Unpretentiousness. Comfortable salon. Affordable spare parts.

Flaws : soundproofing. Dynamics.

Ford Focus I, 2004

First impressions of the Ford Focus I - high-torque engine, despite its 1.6 and 8 valves, elastic steering. The same elastic and downed suspension, clear shifting mechanical box, excellent fit (a sick back liked it), the feeling of dimensions is just on top, despite the small mirrors. For about 30 minutes I thought about the principle by which the headlights and wipers turn on, how the hood opens. After the "Japanese" everything seemed wrong, but after traveling for three days, everything already seemed more convenient than on the same "Japanese". Of the “chips” of the configuration, we got climate control that automatically maintains the set temperature, heated windshield, heated front seats, electric windows and electric mirrors, “sixteenth” cast wheels, steering column with adjustable tilt and reach, a remote key, and a good alarm system with auto start. Of the "jambs" that were left - a short crunch when switching to second gear, an inoperative heating of the driver's seat, still unexplored squeaks in the suspension (it does not affect handling and driving bumps in any way). Very pleased with the fuel consumption of 8-9 liters, with warm-ups and frequent stops in the city. Judging by the calculation of the mileage on poured gasoline, the Ford Focus I computer calculates the average consumption quite correctly. Not at all pleased with how the car gets dirty. He throws too much dirt on himself from puddles. On silver, of course, this is not as critical as on black, but it seems that I will appear in the sink more often than before. I can not help but note the precise handling on the road. The Ford Focus I handles beautifully both in a parking lot and on a straight road. You can just relax behind the wheel. The sounds from the street are not annoying, apparently one of the previous owners did soundproofing, but I have not yet looked to see if it really exists.

Advantages : manageability. Fuel consumption. Good dynamics.

Flaws : gets dirty very quickly in bad weather.

Ford Focus I, 2005

We looked at the Ford Focus I, liked it, the paint was native without chips, the seller was adequate, without air conditioning, with a native radio and mileage of 108 thousand. Until 2012, it was serviced only by "officials", all documents were available and the mileage in mid-2012 was only 45 thousand km. There were 3 owners before me, the first 2 were pensioners, so apparently such a mileage, I decided to buy, a man gave me a Ford Focus I for 210 thousand. What can I say, I bought it and immediately drove it to a friend's service to watch the suspension, etc. they said they were lucky with the car, no one drove it, they drove carefully over bumps, the mileage was real, and the whole suspension was almost native. It was only necessary to change the rear silent blocks 8 pieces, bought the levers in the collection of 2200 rubles. for 2 pcs., German, for sickles I bought 4 purely "silent" 300 rubles. for one, the best, well, and changed the oil and all filters. The oil was filled with purely "Ford" synthetics, 2100 for 5 liters, the entire replacement cost 2500 rubles through an acquaintance. They jumped the speed when it started up to 2000 thousand, and when it started to cold, they said to clean the throttle, cleaned nothing has changed, the specialists said to change the candles, but you can’t bathe like that, they say the disease. I warm up the Ford Focus I a little and it goes well, the consumption is normal, on the highway, if you drive 90-105, 6.3-6.5 liters of 95 gasoline (it is more economical than 92, although the recommendation is 91). At work I drive all sorts of demonstration racks, the trunk is small, but when I fold the rear seats, it turns out huge and a lot of things will fit. The interior is comfortable, I drive 500 km without fatigue, it’s time to change the clutch, probably. works at the end. Suspension is relatively soft, moderately harsh. In general, in general, I am satisfied with the purchase.

Advantages : soft suspension. Comfortable salon. Reliability. Consumption.

Flaws : insignificant.
