Kia Mohave in Russia is a frame SUV with multi-link suspension. Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and Kia Mohave - a comparative test of real SUVs Kia mohave frame

Our motorists love large SUVs. And this is despite the fact that it is extremely inconvenient to drive such cars in close megacities. Nevertheless, huge "rogues" both used and are in considerable demand. It's a pity, but new SUVs are quite expensive. And then there is nothing left but to pay attention to the secondary market. Offers there - for every taste and budget. One of options- Korean SUV Kia Mohave.

As a concept car under the name HM, the SUV was shown in Detroit back in 2005. This model, according to the Koreans, in the future was to become the flagship of the brand and be one step above the notorious Kia Sorento. Three years later, the serial Mohave went on sale in the US market, and in 2009 the car reached South Korea and Russia.

Engine and gearbox

Technically, the Mohave is similar to both the related Sorento and the Hyundai ix55 SUV. In 2012, the Korean SUV began to be equipped with a new 8-speed automatic transmission, which had a positive effect on the car's economy. But as for the third row of seats, thanks to which seven people can move on the Mohave, it was offered from the very beginning of the release of this model.

It is interesting that in our market Kia Mohave appeared immediately in a restyled version. Two engines were available for the car: a diesel 3-liter with a capacity of 250 Horse power And gasoline unit volume of 3.8 liters.

The latter is rare on Mohave. So it is hardly worth focusing on it when buying a car. What's more, it's much more economical. diesel engine turned out to be remarkably successful. In the hands of a caring owner who changes oil every 10 thousand kilometers, up to a run of 200-250 thousand kilometers, a diesel engine will not give cause for concern. I am also glad that diesel digests our not the best fuel. So you can not be afraid of frequent replacement of expensive nozzles.

Sometimes in the secondary market there are Mohave brought from the North American market. On such cars, a 6-speed "automatic" will most likely be installed. But whatever one may say, the eight steps in the automatic transmission that were installed on the car after restyling allow you to drive faster and consume less fuel.

If the "automatic" suddenly began to shift gears with jerks, you should first go to the dealer and figure out what's wrong. It is possible that expensive repairs will not be needed at all, and unpleasant shocks will disappear after flashing the box control unit. But the words of the servicemen that the oil in the "machine" should not be changed, it is better not to listen. If you want to drive for a long time and without problems, then it is better to change it every 60 thousand kilometers.

Interior and suspension

Opinions regarding the quality of finishing materials and the accuracy of assembling the interior of Kia owners Mohave are different. Someone complains about "crickets" and constant squeaks, someone assures that there is nothing to complain about inside. Perhaps the current situation indicates an unstable build quality, so take a ride and listen to extraneous sounds before buying Mohave is definitely worth it.

The Korean SUV is well equipped. It is even found on many cars. But it will certainly become a source of headache. The camera keeps turning off, forcing Mohave owners to turn to the company's service. But the new camera will not last too long. After a couple of years, it starts to turn off spontaneously again.

Other complaints about the Korean SUV include a quickly peeling steering wheel, which is why many potential Mohave buyers have the feeling that the mileage before the sale of the car was seriously adjusted.

The design of the Kia Mohave is based on a powerful frame. the Korean SUV has an independent, all-wheel drive. The latter is connected either automatically or forcibly. Interestingly, in rear suspension Mohave are used. On many crossovers and SUVs, they have proven themselves not in the best way, but not on the Kia Mohave. Rather, the body position sensors will fail than the pneumatic struts themselves will fail. Sensors rarely fail. In our conditions, the wiring going to them is the first to rot. Inspecting the suspension, it does not hurt to pay attention to a considerable number of unprotected components and assemblies. And this means only one thing - it is impossible to consider the Kia Mohave as a serious SUV and constantly use it on rough terrain. Rather, it is just a large spacious car that allows you to move comfortably on relatively flat paved roads.

On the first Kia Mohave sold from us, you can find small spots of rust, but there are few such cars. Most Mohave owners have never even heard of corrosion. As well as the fact that this car is stolen. The criminal world of Kia Mohave is of little interest. But motorists dreaming of a large and unpretentious SUV are looking towards the “Korean” more and more often. They are quite understandable. For a reasonable price, Mohave offers a solid construction, spacious salon and good ride quality.

Together with their brother Huyndai ix55 they divided the world. Western Hemisphere got Hyundai, Eastern Hemisphere Kia

The first presentation to the public of Kia Mohave, or, as it was called on the back of the Earth, Borrego, took place in 2008, and since 2009 full-scale production began. In Russia and Europe in those days, compact, so-called urban crossovers were of greater interest, so they were not particularly in a hurry with deliveries to the Old World. As a result, a fully-fledged SUV appeared with us only in 2010, in a restyled version and with diesel engine. Moreover, interestingly, it was also announced with a 3.8-liter gasoline six, but our market did not see these versions en masse. They went only to order, almost single copies. But in North America, a gasoline engine sold better, but not on a Kia, but on a single-platform Huyndai ix55, which noticeably differed in external details and interior. As it turned out later, our version was better, since the diesel proved to be excellent. There was only one problem with the sale of Mohave in Russia - tiny quotas.

TWO STAGES

Not only restyling distinguished appeared in Russia Kia version Mohave, but also a new eight-speed gearbox. Before that, a six-speed was installed. By the way, those who have traveled on both versions, interrupting each other, praise new transmission, which, both in terms of reliability and switching speed, softness, efficiency and endurance, completely furnishes the older sister. The former was overly thoughtful on the kickdown, and generally unhurried on acceleration. The new one turned out to be much livelier, and the appearance of delays during switching could only indicate the need to visit the dealer to read errors and routine maintenance. In general, for the main units Mohave owners didn't complain. The engine, gearbox, suspension, body and interior equipment served smoothly, stably without noticeable problems. However, the car is not conducive to fast driving and off-road overcoming. “American features” are clearly visible in it: impressiveness, softness, a spacious interior, an empty steering wheel and an engine that is elastic in a wide rev range. And the buyer of Mohave is not one of those who are ready to burn rubber and tear the universal joints. Therefore, these SUVs are preserved better than others, even after serving five or six years. At the same time, Mohave is quite capable of taking off with a screech, and off-road does not save on the appropriate status.

There are no frills, but there are no problems with readability either.

ONE ON ONE

Today it is hard to believe, but the cost diesel machine with an eight-speed automatic transmission started at 1.5 million rubles. It is interesting that after five years, after a little train ride, it costs about the same, if, of course, you count in rubles. Most of the Mohave was assembled in Kaliningrad, at the Avtotor plant. Opinions about the Russian assembly, as usual, differ. Someone curses the crooked domestic assemblers, someone, on the contrary, does not complain about anything. At least objective reasons to scold Russian assembly there are no service centers. In addition to Kaliningrad, Mohave was assembled in Kazakhstan at a plant in Ust-Kamenogorsk, in Malaysia and Korea. Cars from different manufacturers differ in both engines and transmissions. For example, in Malaysia they made a lot of Mohave with 3.0-liter gasoline engines and five-speed mechanics. There were even versions rear wheel drive. Be that as it may, the most successful versions in the sense of selecting the units of the version got to Russia. In addition, the motors were adapted to our conditions, because when asked about the failure rate of the Common Rail fuel equipment, the service masters only shrugged their shoulders. Even the injectors of many cars have never changed. It would be possible to end the story with words like “the transmission is reliable and does not break, as well as the chassis”, but still managed to find a couple of unpleasant nuances.

RABIES

While the Mohave won't go into serious human-handling breakdowns, some little things can cause even the most even-tempered drivers to go berserk. After all, you must admit, if the rear-view camera is turned off once a week, and once a year you have to change it, this can be a little upsetting. As well as the rotten contacts of the body position sensors in the rear suspension. Mohave's suspension is completely independent, but in front of the spring, which does not have demolition, and in the back, air springs act as elastic elements. This design causes bewilderment among the owners: they say, they would either make pneumatics entirely, or they would leave springs everywhere. And then a little puddle, but with mud, or frost in the morning - and the sensors were gone. That is, the sensors as such do not break, but corrosion appears, and the wiring closes. The air bellows themselves are reliable, but when they are parked for a long time, they quietly release air. When starting the engine, the compressor needs literally a few seconds to raise the rear part that has sagged during the absence of the owner.

Does not like moisture and the lower edge of the trunk. It rusts like on the old "Niva"! True, a five-year warranty allows you to resolve these misunderstandings at the expense of the seller. In general, almost all problems overlap warranty period. At the same time, Mohave never had any major recall campaigns or panic service actions. A well thought out car. Just afraid of water...

RIGHT AMERICA!

Kia Mohave is built according to frankly American patterns. Comfort, interior, engines, transmission, handling. Permanent full drive with automatic or forced blocking center differential on the lower gear of the transfer case. Ground clearance of 220 mm and small overhangs do not great advantage on rough terrain, a car with such a long base, but any snow drift or dirt road, washed out by a downpour, will be on the shoulder for a Korean. Mohave is especially good as a tugboat. A powerful diesel engine with a torque of 540 Nm will allow you to drag a camper or boat to any mountain lake on the planet. And the motor is very flexible. Overtaking at speeds of 100-140 km / h, typical on the freeway, is accompanied by a fair amount of acceleration. If at the same time the box abruptly, with a kick, changes from gear to gear, you should call the dealer. The masters will update the firmware, maybe change the oil just in case. Hard shifts, especially noticeable in 2nd and 4th gears, will disappear. If you rush headlong on bad roads, then the front wheel bearings will fail very quickly. They say they can be repaired, but more often they change the entire hub under warranty. Mohave has not yet reached the mass replacement of air springs, the brakes wear out according to the classic scenario - the front ones go like consumables, the rear ones live three times longer.

The American approach to comfort extends to the cabin. There are no particularly sophisticated solutions in it, but everything is spacious, solid and reliable. But the leather steering wheel peels off almost after a year of operation. It is meekly changed under the same guarantee. If the three-zone climate does not work, you need to look at the wiring, most often - the mass. In the cooling system, there are electric diesel heaters that are very relevant on frosty days, which are also quite reliable.

I suppose I could just as calmly and leisurely list the many components and assemblies of the Kia Mohave, each time repeating “reliable” and “does not break.” Better think about the advisability of acquiring such a car. As we have already said, the cost of a car purchased at the beginning of 2014 does not exceed its current price by much. Certainly, this is a good investment. Mohave's competitors are Mitsubishi Pajero And Nissan Pathfinder, but our hero is more spacious and comfortable on the go, and his diesel engine is much more reliable and economical. So, in the Altai mountains, where we pretty much traveled on Mohave, the average consumption did not exceed 14 liters per hundred kilometers. And it's in the mountains! And if you wave it to the sea?

Owner's opinion:
Nikita, Kia Mohave 3.0 CRDi 8AT, 2012
I was faced with the task of buying a large safe car. Chose between Volvo XC90 (scared off the cost of service) and Mitsubishi Pajero, which seemed cramped. Suddenly I came across a two-year restyled Mohave, and it turned out to be just right. Of the failures, I remember the rear-view camera, which was changed twice, the stabilizer struts, also twice, and the steering joints - I often drive on bad roads. As a result of two years of operation, one conclusion was made - there is no alternative, I am one hundred percent sure in the car!

Mohave, of course, is trying to look younger, but you can't hide your age. And just as the “grandmotherphone” cannot catch up with the iPhone in design, the updated SUV cannot reach the expression and athletic appearance of the same new Sportage and Sorento. The restyled Mohave still looks unobtrusive, and you can easily skip it in the stream if you don't know what to look for. So, the Mojave received new bumpers, for the first time LED DRLs were attached above the foglights, the radiator grille and the design of the 18-inch rims, and blue and brown colors were added to the body color map. That, in fact, is all.

In the US, Kia Mohave (where it is known as Borrego) "did not go" and left America back in 2010. Today, the main markets for Mohave are the Middle East, Southeast Asia and Russia. Although our sales of this model cannot be compared with the same Sorento or Sportage. By the way, the Mohave we sell is produced at Avtotor in Kaliningrad using the SKD method.

There are already more changes and injections of modernity in the interior, but even there it is clear that the young one is no longer young. And these wide inserts "under the tree" are generally like greetings from the past ... However, our readers were more interested in applied and technical issues. Let's move on to them.

Question from vyacheclavovich

What engines are offered?

The updated Mohave arrived in Russia with the same V6 turbodiesel and 8-speed automatic that its predecessor had. And this is definitely not the worst legacy, but just the “trick” of the Korean SUV. Because this aggregate is nothing like 4-cylinder diesel "rumblers", the difference in traction is colossal! The three-liter engine with a cast-iron block and a variable geometry turbine still develops 250 hp. and 549 Nm from 2000 rpm. 8.7 seconds - and the speedometer is already 100 km / h, although the Mohave weighs 2.2 tons.

Minimum price

Maximum price

This diesel engine does not feel the interior and trunk loaded to the eyeballs either: it starts powerfully, but smoothly from traffic lights, easily accelerates from the move, without straining goes along long highway climbs, and also gaining momentum if you ask. And all this - under a pleasantly muffled bass rumbling and a thin mischievous chirp of the turbine, manifested during active acceleration.

They tried to freshen up the interior with another finish with "wood-like" inserts (the inserts are easily scratched, the textured finish resembles kirzach), a new steering wheel, instruments and a center console. There is a new multimedia touch screen, JBL audio system and ventilation of the passenger seat. But the USB-connector is still only one. Like the handrail on the counter windshield from the passenger side.

Moreover, the diesel engine does not need to be twisted strongly: its strength is precisely at medium speeds, where the torque is maximum. So, under a slight release of gas, we force the 8-speed automatic to switch up, give it gas again - and we get another wave of acceleration. Not in the box sport mode, and it is tuned more for comfort and economy, switching softly and measuredly. If you gradually press down on the gas, the machine is stubbornly in no hurry to switch down, because the diesel "pulls out" even in higher gears. So to accelerate on overtaking gas, you need to act more decisively.

Of the nitpicks - shock-hard inclusion of the air conditioning clutch and a noisy engine cooling fan. As for the reliability of this diesel engine, among the reviews of the owners of the "pre-reform" model there are references to the replacement of turbochargers and piezoelectric injectors. But this happened mainly during the warranty period (today it has been increased to 5 years or 150,000 km). By the way, a good reason to analyze Mohave in more detail in our section, so stay tuned for our publications!

New and highly legible Supervision instrument cluster with 4.2" color screen - in top version premium. But the backlight brightness setting was not found. In other trim levels - a 3.5-inch monochrome screen.

Steering, weightless at low speeds, is heavy on the track, although it is also tuned for comfort, and not sharp taxiing, which is expected. And the brakes do not raise questions with their abilities.

But the independent suspension just discouraged. Her update did not affect, but it would be worth it! Already in the basic equipment there are adaptive dampers, but there is a feeling that they are weak for such a weighty car. Banks in turns - not so bad. Worse, the SUV is dancing on well hatches and canvas defects, striving to stray off course. Chipped asphalt gives off to the steering wheel, the body shudders frightenedly on “patches”, trembles from vibrations of heavy wheels, “gestures” at the joints (especially the rear suspension), and if there are also potholes on the arc, it rearranges the stern as if there is not a multi-link suspension, but a bridge on springs!

Travel range rear air suspension from the lower to the upper (in the photo) position - 80 mm.

On primers, bumps are already less given to the steering wheel. But you still won’t accelerate especially - the suspension lacks energy intensity and working strokes. On a hard gravel grader, it is especially felt that the rear air suspension is working almost to the limit, pestering with a hum and bumps. In general, for an SUV, the Mohave has some kind of "crossover" suspension. And it’s not for nothing that the owners of the pre-styling model themselves changed the shock absorbers to stiffer ones so that the SUV was more assembled and “walked” less.

Question from mihan_rsx

Driving off-road?

Let's just say: goes, but with reservations. And in terms of its geometric cross-country ability, Mohave, alas, is also closer to crossovers than to serious "rogues". Long wheelbase and low-hanging body sills will make you think twice about climbing into sharp terrain bends. The massive rear overhang can be partially compensated by raising the rear air suspension to the upper position and thereby increasing the departure angle and ground clearance (in this position it reaches a solid 30.5 cm). But in the basic versions, there are ordinary springs at the back, and the risk of "anchoring" the stern increases dramatically.

  1. The updated Mohave now has blind spot monitoring, tire pressure monitoring and surround view cameras that show the situation in front and behind in different combinations.
  2. Multimedia - with a 1 GHz 2-core processor, 1 GB of RAM and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean OS. Supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, navigation shows houses in 3D ... But the reaction to the buttons is delayed, and the navigator sometimes strays.
  3. Management of 3-zone climate control - convenient and visual.

The front is even sadder. The new bumper has become more massive and lower, and its protruding lower "jaw" easily reaches the ground in deep holes and ruts, forcing you to be careful. But even worse, under the protection of the motor, we intended only "crossover" 195 mm of clearance! Due to such a low and weighty "muzzle" there is not so much sense in the rear air suspension on difficult off-road conditions. Yes, it increases the clearance under the bridge and the tank, but the SUV can sit down with the front end even earlier. Older Mohave owners have had their front suspension lifted with spacers or other springs and dampers - a real must if you're going off the pavement a lot.

But the diesel traction reserve allows you to crawl through the mud for a long time even without engaging a lower gear. And we deliberately started to knead the dirt in the Auto mode in the dispenser, when the connecting front axle the interaxal multi-disk clutch constantly "plays" with the degree of its blocking, adjusting the supplied torque. It was expected that the clutch would overheat in this mode, but they did not wait - for this, it is clearly necessary to increase the gas and climb, for example, into the sand. In 4H mode, the clutch is fully clamped, dividing the thrust equally between the axles. So it is already more difficult to overheat, and slight delays in connecting the front axle disappear.

Mohave's electronic imitation of interwheel locks is not the most "evil", but quite functional, and the "self-blocking" of the rear axle helps. Road tires quickly "wash out" and do not allow you to get out of the rut sideways even with a knee-deep sparrow. But if you go on inertia and straight wheels, then you can "crawl" on such loam. The main thing is not to get carried away.

In low gear in the transfer case, the traction is generally dray: a diesel engine could easily turn the wheels even more and “toothier”. On a lowered Mohave, it honestly starts off from the first gear in the gearbox, and the torque reserve is almost from the "bottom" and the gas settings allow you to conveniently and linearly dose the thrust. Still, the difference in the speed of reactions to gas between a turbodiesel with 6 and 4 cylinders is heaven and earth! Although there is a nuance. On the lower row in the transfer case, the traction control system, contrary to logic and expectations, does not turn off and “strangles” the engine at the most inopportune moment when traction is needed. You have to turn it off manually.

Question from kamil_fazliev and mr_and_mrs_ivanov

How different is the Kia Mohave from the Sorento Prime? Who is preferable and does it make sense to overpay?

These two cars from the same Kia family are more than seriously different, and not only in price. And here everyone already chooses for himself, proceeding from what the car is for and what you expect from it.

At first, I don’t like the front seats: you can’t move far, the back is pushing out and flat like a board, your shoulders hang in the air, the head restraints are not very comfortable ... But then you get used to it. Of the pleasant things - sun visors with a retractable section. Perforated quilted Nappa leather is a first on Mohave, but is available in the most expensive Premium version, as is a boxed armrest with a cooling compartment.

The seven-seater Mohave is on a frame, and it is larger than the Sorento: 15 cm longer in body and 11 cm in wheelbase, a little wider, and its declared ground clearance is higher (217 mm versus 185). The trunk is bigger too. The V6 diesel and the frame allow you to load the car to the eyeballs, and even pull a camper or boat - let's not forget that Mohave was created, including for the USA, where SUVs are regularly used as tractors for heavy trailers. And the air suspension just does not allow the stern to sag under the weight of the cargo and trailer. And the presence of a lower gear also allows you to depict something on this off-road.

Sorento Prime is already an urban crossover with load-bearing body for 5 or 7 seats. More modern in terms of finish and ergonomics, more "asphalt" in suspension settings, more accurate and collected in handling and behavior on the track. But there is no air suspension at the rear, and the engines are weaker, although there are also gasoline engines in the range. The most powerful of them is a 3.3-liter V6 (250 hp and 318 Nm), and a 2.2-liter diesel engine produces a maximum of 200 “forces” and 441 Nm. And only a 6-speed automatic for all engines, while Mohave flaunts an 8-speed automatic transmission.

  1. The left spoke of the steering wheel covers the control unit for all-wheel drive, suspension, stabilization system - you have to press and twist by touch or peep. The headlight washer button is also not very convenient.
  2. The rear climate control panel is already in the database, but the front seat shift buttons are only in the most expensive version. USB connector? He is not here, as in the third row.
  3. On the second row - expanse in all directions. And the knees do not rest, even if the chair is pushed back all the way. But for the average passenger, a folded armrest sticks out in the back, flat and hard as a board. And when landing, there is not enough handrail on the middle pillars of the body - again they saved money!

Yes, and off-road behind the wheel of a Sorento Prime, you need to drive carefully: ground clearance only a little more than a passenger car, the body overhangs are large, there are no “lowers” for confident mixing of dirt, and the hydraulic coupling for connecting the rear axle is clearly not designed for such quirks. "Leave him family long-range cruises on high-speed highways, at worst - broken country roads and rolled primers," - there is nothing to add to these words of our correspondent after.

Question from ty_kto

Are the windows all automatic?

You will be surprised, but no: there is an automatic window raising and lowering only on the front doors, on the rear - they saved money. And also from Russian configurations Mohave somewhere evaporated the electric adjustment of the pedal assembly, which was offered on the pre-styling model. Removed so as not to wind up the price?

When both rows are folded, the volume of the "hold" is 2.7 cubic meters! The flat floor allows you to organize chic sleeping places. But there is still no tailgate servo (there is only a closer), and the raised lid is a bit low for people above 180 cm.

Although after the update, Mohave still went up in price. Basic Comfort cost 2,399,900 rubles, now - 2,439,900 rubles. All-wheel drive here is plug-in, without a downshift in the transfer case, the interior is fabric (multi-steering wheel and gear selector are in leather), but the equipment is not poor at all. There is a multimedia system and JBL "music", 3-zone climate control with a control unit for rear passengers and an additional electric heater for the passenger compartment, heated parking spaces for wipers, mirrors (they are servo-driven) and front seats, adjustable lumbar support for the driver and cruise control . Plus LED running lights and fog lights, "turn signals" in the side mirrors, roof rails, rear spoiler, luggage net and luggage cover. And all this is on alloy wheels with tires 245/70 R17.

There are already 6 airbags in the database (previously there were only frontal airbags), a stabilization system with an uphill start assistant, a standard alarm and immobilizer, front and rear parking sensors, a rain sensor and, of course, ERA-GLONASS.

  1. On the "gallery" you sit on the floor, your legs are up, the back does not recline. And although the middle row can be moved forward to give room to the knees, how long can you sit like that? In the form of light consolation - coasters, air ducts on the ceiling and a ceiling light.
  2. When the third row is raised, the boot expectedly "shrinks" to 350 liters or a couple of bags.
  3. The jack is hidden in an organizer under the trunk floor.

I got Mohave and a new intermediate version of Luxe for 2,639,900 rubles. In it, the fabric interior is already being replaced by leather, heating of the rear sofa and steering wheel, active headrests, tinted rear hemisphere and a self-dimming salon mirror are added. The price also includes wooden inserts on the steering wheel, automatic front windows and, most importantly, a lower row in the transfer case.

Self-locking limited slip rear differential and rear air suspension are only available from maximum configuration Premium for 2,849,900 rubles. The seats (the front ones are already ventilated) are trimmed with perforated Nappa leather, there is interior lighting in the doors, servo drives for the front seats and a steering wheel with memory (as well as folding mirrors with a tilt function when driving backwards), a sunroof, a cooled box in the armrest. The engine starts with a button, there are xenon headlights and LED taillights, all-round cameras and blind spot monitoring. Of the external differences - wheels with a dimension of 265/60 R18, side steps and chrome door handles.

Question from kamil_fazliev

No matter how close the price to "Kruzak" came close ...

The price of Mohave in the range from 2,439,900 to 2,869,900 rubles is its main weapon in market wars, with all its flaws. Because there is objectively no direct alternative to it: no one offers a well-equipped frame 7-seater SUV with a V6 diesel for that kind of money, downshift, 8-speed automatic and a large interior.

Under the steel motor protection, we measured 195 mm. In the technical data, a clearance of 217 mm is declared.

Toyota Land Cruiser Prado which is shorter? From 2,727,000 rubles for a basic 5-seater body and a 4-cylinder diesel engine of 2.8 liters (177 hp) paired with a 6-speed automatic. Seven-seater option - from 3,513,000 rubles. New 5 seater Mitsubishi Pajero Sport with a 2.4 liter diesel (181 hp) is not cheaper: from 2,649,990 rubles for an 8-band automatic.

Frameless Volkswagen Touareg V6 TDI with no dependent suspension and an 8-speed automatic? It is only 5-seater and don’t go near it without three million: the version with a 204-horsepower diesel engine costs from 3,089,000 rubles, the 245-horsepower version. - from 3,199,000 rubles (prices without trade-in discounts). Do you need a variant with a "lower" in the handout? It is available only in the performance of 4XMotion at a price of 3,259,000 rubles.

  1. The BorgWarner aluminum transfer case is hidden behind the frame cross member. In Auto mode, the front axle is connected by an automatic clutch, in 4H it is blocked, in 4L mode a lower row is activated.
  2. The power steering tubes run behind the steering rack and are not protected by anything. If you often move off-road, an additional sheet of protection, at the same time covering the box, definitely does not hurt.
  3. Front suspension - with two wishbones. And its strokes are still small: note how the rubber buffer of the compression stroke on lower arm almost rests on the restrictive platform. And this is on an empty car.

Who else? Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 3-liter diesel V6 has long "merged" from our market. Now it only has a 3.6L petrol V6. Option for 238 hp costs from 2,870,000 rubles, 286 hp version. - already 3,800,000 rubles. Recently returned to Russian Mitsubishi Pajero - only a modest gasoline 3-liter V6 (174 hp), but immodest 2,749,000 - 2,949,990 rubles are asked for a middle-aged SUV.

Korean analogue of Toyota Land cruiser Prado, and in fact "American" to the core, Kia Mohave is an absolutely niche product on the market. Russian market. And how can it not be niche if it is a huge seven-seater frame SUV with a diesel engine, the design of which is long overdue to be changed to suit modern trends in the auto industry? The same Prado looks much better, not to mention a bunch of other competitors. And, nevertheless, in connection with the restyling of 2016, which reached the Russian Federation only in the spring of 2017, Mohave became definitely prettier, especially inside. Read all the details about it in our review!

Design

The restyled Mohave, which, as you might guess from the name, was originally developed for the North American market, seems as boring as its predecessor, and there is hardly anyone who will gasp with surprise and delight when they see it on the road. There is still nothing remarkable in the appearance of a large Kia Motors SUV - to this day it is a “workhorse” and nothing more. But the “horse” has updated bumpers, a radiator grille and 18-inch wheel rims, as well as LED running lights above the fog optics. And the color scheme of the model was replenished with blue and brown shades. Here, actually, and all innovations.

The new chrome grille is nothing special, as is the head optics around the edges. From the side, a car with American roots looks no more interesting than UAZ Patriot, but domestic car costs almost twice as much! Changing the pattern of light alloy wheels did not greatly affect the situation. The "stern" of the updated Mohave is purely practical - with plain lanterns that extend onto the rear fenders and a huge trunk lid. Behind the tailgate is a truly chic amount of cargo space, which is good news. With two rows of seats folded down, this volume reaches 2.7 cubic meters, which, given the flat floor, allows you to easily organize full-fledged sleeping places. No wonder the car was designed for the USA! There was no electric drive at the tailgate (only a regular door closer is provided), and the opening is small for people whose height exceeds 180 cm.

Design

The foundation of the restyled version of Mohave is the old frame structure: in front it has a suspension on double levers, and in the back - a multi-link. For a surcharge, a rear air suspension is offered (and a self-locking limited-slip rear differential), but it should be borne in mind that on severe off-road it will be of little use, since the design of the SUV is characterized by crossover habits, and the clearance of the crossover model is only 195 mm, although the manufacturer claims that under the bottom as much as 217 mm. For serious cross-country driving, the ground clearance is frankly modest.

Adaptation to Russian conditions

Mohave 2017 model year- definitely an option for the city and light off-road, and not for extreme Russian conditions, even despite the presence of a frame and all-wheel drive. For operation in Russia, it is not ideally prepared, but not bad either: it has an 82-liter fuel tank with steel protection and a jack hidden in an organizer under the floor of the cargo compartment, as well as a full-size spare wheel, an Era-Glonass emergency call button in case of an accident, a stabilization system, an assistant when starting uphill and separate climate control. For winter, heating of exterior mirrors, front and rear seats, steering wheel and windshield in the rest area of the “wipers” is provided. In addition, there is an electric interior heater.

Comfort

The interior of the Mohave is American-style spacious, you can’t say anything about it. It can be seen that it is designed for a large and friendly family that takes a lot of things with them on the road and does not forget about paper cups with coffee from McDonald's - the local coasters seem to be specially created for them. Seven seats - a good family solution, but in which case it is better to place children on last row- adults will definitely not like it there, because the third row is not suitable for tall passengers, and it is not very easy for adults to climb onto it. Of the innovations in the interior, there is a leather multifunction steering wheel with a wooden insert and electric height/reach adjustment, a more thoughtful dashboard with a classic layout and a large eight-inch touchscreen of the multimedia complex. The left spoke of the steering wheel, unfortunately, somewhat overlaps the control unit for the all-wheel drive transmission, suspension and system exchange rate stability- you have to press buttons and twist the “washer” by touch or take your eyes off the road for a moment to see what is where. The headlight washer button is not too well located.

The layout of the climate control unit (3 zones) is logical and understandable, the “climate” control is already available in the initial configuration. Automatic windows went only to the front doors, and the manufacturer decided to save on the rear. On the ceiling there are air ducts, a ceiling light, sun visors with a retractable section and an electric sunroof (the sunroof is in the top version). The front seats can not boast of a perfect fit, but you quickly get used to them. Driver's seat - with adjustable lumbar support. For the first time, perforated quilted Nappa leather is used for the seating of the SUV - however, this is the privilege of the most expensive Premium option, as is the armrest with a cooled box for drinks.

The Mohave comes standard with front and side airbags, anti-lock braking system (ABS), stability control (ESC) and hill-climb assist (HAC), cruise control, park assist and a rain sensor. For an additional fee, now you can get blind spot monitoring (BSD) and 4 all-round video cameras (AVM), showing the situation in front and behind in various variations. There are no more security innovations.

The Mohave infotainment system and speakers have been updated. From now on, JBL speakers and a media system with an eight-inch color touchscreen, navigation, steering wheel controls, Bluetooth and AUX / USB connectors are installed on the car. mobile devices, as well as support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The processor of the new "multimedia" 2-core, 1 GHz, RAM - 1 GB, OS - Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. The sound of the system is excellent, the graphics are decent, but the responses to finger presses are not very fast, and the navigator, which is capable of showing houses in 3D, sometimes gets confused in the readings.

Kia Mojave Specifications

Under the hood is a good old three-liter EN590 diesel engine with a return of 250 hp. at 3800 rpm. IN South Korea he gives out 14 "horses" more, but in Russia this option is simply not profitable at the mercy of the transport tax. Paired with it is the latest automatic transmission with 8 steps - with it Mohave accelerates to 100 km / h in just 8.7 seconds, which is an excellent indicator for a huge SUV. The maximum speed is 190 km/h. According to the manufacturer, the consumption of "heavy fuel" averages 9.3 l / 100 km, in the city - 12.4 l / 100 km, and on the highway - 7.6 l / 100 km. However, judging by the reviews of car owners, the real numbers may be different.

Rama is losing ground. The once famous "rogues" with a change of generations degenerate into banal SUVs. Jeep Cherokee, Ford Explorer, Nissan Pathfinder has long left the ranks of honest SUVs. But Mitsubishi Pajero Sport remained true to itself in the third generation - this is the L200 in the guise of a station wagon. A powerful frame, an impressive tire size, a solid rear axle and a Super Select transmission - what else do you need for complete happiness?

Diesel! And they didn’t offer it for a beginner. And now, a year after its debut on the Russian market, Pajero Sport has acquired the same 181-horsepower 4N15 turbodiesel, already familiar from. He is assisted by an 8-speed automatic. The test car in the Ultimate version costs 3,050,000 rubles.

Mitsubishi's opponent in today's duel is . Also a large frame with an 8-speed automatic and a turbodiesel, but a 3.0-liter and 70 “horses” more powerful. Not quite fair? So after all, Mohave with a similar level of equipment is cheaper - 2,850,000 rubles. It doesn't get any more honest!

Kia Mohave

It debuted back in 2008 and the name clearly hinted that it was focused on the North American market. However, we also sell it. organized at the plant in Kaliningrad. Mohave underwent a facelift last year.

ENGINE:

diesel: 3.0 (250 hp) - from 2,419,900 rubles.

Mitsubishi Pajero Sport

The third generation car debuted back in 2015, but reached our market only in 2016 and only with a gasoline engine. Diesel modification appeared this year. The car is assembled in Thailand.

ENGINES:

gasoline: 3.0 (209 hp) - from 2,799,990 rubles.

diesel: 2.4 (181 hp) - from 2,399,000 rubles.

Asian beauty

The image of the current Pajero Sport reminded of the Chinese actor Bolo Yen, familiar to everyone who watched action movies with a nasal translation on VHS cassettes worn to holes. Pumped "Asian" Mitsubishi looks strange. Everything is in order with the face - an oriental squint, muscular front wings. Chrome-plated X-elements on the front bumper convey. But sadness is trouble with the stern. Because of the side windows rising to the sky, it turned out to be heavy, the taillights flowing down to the bumper only enhance the effect.

I quickly open the door, grab the handle on the A-pillar, and hop into the rocking body. Inside, it's almost an L200, only more expensive - for example, the instrument panel is adorned with a colorful trip computer display. Thai hands are magical not only in massage - they also know how to carefully assemble cars. It's a pity they saved on materials.

Plastic tries very hard to look like soft, but you knock on it - a cork, a gift from Africa. For a pickup it will do, but for a car for three million, I would like more expensive materials. As well as more thoughtful ergonomics. It does not matter that the seat has a minimum set of adjustments - the main thing is that the profile is not bad. Worse, it is slightly deployed relative to the steering wheel and pedals. After a couple of hours landing "in three quarters" begins to tire. Yes, even this savings on trifles. The glass closer is only for the driver. Nice leather on the steering wheel? Only in places of grip, and for others they sacrificed a pair of tarpaulin boots.

Mohave is the complete opposite. Appearance is calm and almost boring. Nothing to complain about. How to get hooked. Kia looked slightly outdated right after its debut. But now, after almost ten years, he is younger. These forms will almost certainly be relevant for another ten years.

Getting into the cabin is a little more difficult than in Mitsubishi: the driver was deprived of a handle on the windshield pillar, although the passenger was not forgotten. Feel? It was like moving from economy to business class. The plastic is soft not only to the touch, but also in appearance, the painted inserts on the center console are skillfully disguised as metal, and there is something “wooden”. Updated, Mohave found a new instrument panel with moonlight and red arrows. Simple and elegant. And there is no feeling that they saved on me: the landing is correct, the seat is with a lumbar support, the steering wheel is electrically adjustable in height. Who would have told me five years ago that the interior of the "Korean" would be better and richer than that of the sacred Pajero!

Places for small things - with a margin, and that's good. They drive a large SUV not only to work - it would be nice if the smartphone did not conflict with a glass of coffee because of the “living space”. So it turns out that Kia is a little more intelligent than Mitsubishi in everything.

Your place in the gallery

For passengers, Mohave is a paradise. Spacious, the second row seats move back and forth, the backrest angle is adjustable. There is a separate climate control and seat heating. In the third row, the landing is far from ideal, but you can go. In general, Mohave passengers are in a special position. Only the entrance-exit is not very convenient: the Koreans crossed out the handrails on the racks here too.

Pajero Sport also happens to be seven-seater (cup holders on the sidewall in the trunk clearly indicate this), but only in Thailand. Probably as a reward for a quality build. Russian cars are two-row. The rear seats are set much higher than the front ones, in an amphitheater. There is seat cushion heating, you can adjust the air flow from the ceiling vents, but there is no full-fledged climate control.

Only by opening the tailgate, you stop regretting that the Pajero Sport does not have a third row. What a hold! We measured an honest 552 liters “under the curtain”, and if we fold the seats and load things up to the ceiling ... However, Mohave is also an economic small. It is clear that in the seven-seater version, the trunk will be equal in volume to a large travel bag, but with the third row folded down, its capacity almost reaches half a cubic meter (476 liters).

Tractor and diesel driver

I wake up a four-cylinder diesel 4N15, and the interior is filled with tractor rattling. But there are no vibrations, which is nice. Pajero doesn't move - it jumps forward! It's not about the transcendent zeal of the motor, but about the damping of the gas pedal, which must be properly pushed in order to get the result. A noticeable longitudinal buildup on a soft suspension only enhances the dive.

I still have fresh memories of who didn’t “ride” at all. Against its background, Pajero Sport is a sprinter. Twelve-odd seconds to 100 km / h for a heavy diesel car is a tolerable result.

The eight-speed automatic Aisin skillfully compensates for flaws in the accelerator setting and a slight shortage of “pots” and “horses”. The Japanese even fitted huge manual shift paddles. I love these things, but in a frame all-terrain vehicle they look foreign. Much more appropriate is active cruise control, which works pretty well on the highway: it does not allow sudden braking and allows you to adjust the distance to the car in front. The delicacy of his work should be noted by the parking sensors, who paranoidly sounds the alarm with or without.

You start Mohave - and you understand that there are no superfluous cylinders. The three-liter diesel V6 rustles softly at idle, almost without betraying its "heavy" origin. The box is also 8-speed. There are no paddles on the steering wheel, but they are not needed: 549 Newton meters carry the Mohave forward, dissolving the Pajero in the rear-view mirrors. There is enough traction throughout the entire range, since the machine with tightly “chopped” gears does not interrupt its flow.

It is gratifying that consumption is also lower - Kia eats less on average per liter. And how stable it is on the track! A frame is a frame, but the merit of a fully independent suspension cannot be denied. Side wind, light asphalt track - all for nothing. It is even surprising that the cruise control on such a road car is inactive.

The first turn makes you remember that Mohave is big and heavy. Not the sharpest reactions to the steering wheel, smeared "zero" ... The winding road is not one of his favorite habitats, but compared to the Pajero, this is practically a passenger car!

Any frame with dependent suspension is subject to the effect of a double chassis - when body roll relative to the frame is added to the work of springs and shock absorbers. Of all these cars that I have ever driven, only did not suffer from this. But he is a product of the Stuttgart school of witchcraft and wizardry, and Pajero Sport is a simpler guy.

According to the chassis, this is the same pickup truck, only with springs in the rear suspension instead of springs. Therefore, even on a straight line, Mitsubishi requires a firm steering hand. And in the corners it needs to be constantly adjusted. Soft off road tires Bridgestone Dueler only increase the dynamic corridor and make even more discord in the already “approximate” handling.

wild horse racing

Asphalt was replaced by a medium scall primer. This is where the honest hard worker Pajero should win back! He actively scans small things, transferring it to the body in all details. But the larger the pit, the stronger the confidence in the amazing energy intensity of the suspension. Even in the pits of half a wheel, you can’t wait for a breakdown. Mitsubishi is more likely to get off the ground. In which he, in fact, succeeded. I won’t say that Pajero resembles a prancing mustang on a transverse wave, but on a broken road you need to regularly catch a car. And it's tiring.

Kia's suspension margin is less, but it's almost impossible to catch the difference. But on the primer, he is much friendlier to riders: he practically ignores a trifle, and works out more serious flaws no worse than his opponent. At the same time, it remains stable and does not require constant steering.

Gradually, the primer turns into off-road, and Pajero proudly spreads its wings. Here he is the owner! For the time being, he does not need either downshifting or blocking. But when thick slippery clay went under the wheels, I still used the lower row and the off-road mode (“dirt”). The rear differential lock did not come in handy: Pajero Sport confidently rushes through the field, which is usually driven only by tractors and rural Urals. Even when it turned sideways, the formidable off-road tires continued to "dig" and pulled the car in the right direction.

It was not scary to fall into a rut - there is enough clearance! Watching this show, Mohave respectfully got up. In addition to the changing clearance under rear axle in his off-road arsenal there is only a downshift.

He failed to overcome the entire route following Mitsubishi: there is nothing to do here on ordinary road tires. If Kia were on toothy Bridgestones, he would have gone further, but he has less all-terrain talents: the clearance is more modest, the bumpers hang lower. Yes, and the hydraulic clutch that controls the front axle can overheat with a long slip.

Destinations

Pajero Sport is a legendary name. And the new generation machine is the best of what Mitsubishi offers. With the advent diesel version sluggish sales will pick up. nice car! But on many points, he lost out to the elderly Kia.

Only on medium and hard off road Pajero out of competition. Does it make sense to buy an SUV for three million, if you go into impassable jungle once a year on a promise? It is better to take the simplest version with mechanics, saving half a million. Or even opt for an L200 pickup truck.

If you need a big and versatile car, then Mohave is your hero. He passes only on extreme off-road, pleasant on the track and spacious. Even the base Mohave has a powerful diesel, automatic box and a decent level of equipment. What else do you need in life?

Workplace driver

The Pajero seat has only a standard set of adjustments and is deployed relative to the longitudinal axis. The Kia driver's seat is lumbar-adjustable and better shaped. The Mohave steering wheel is electrically adjustable, and the Mitsubishi steering wheel is nicer to grip. The exterior mirrors of the Pajero are huge, the forward view is excellent, but there is little to see in the saloon mirror. Kia is in a similar situation. The capabilities of electronic assistants are about the same.

Governing bodies

Salon

At Pajero, the frame eats up a tangible part of the cabin, which is why the headroom is modest. Possibilities of the central tunnel are not used in the best way. Kia has more space. In addition, it has a wider range of options - only the adaptive cruise control that Mitsubishi flaunts is missing. Kia is friendlier to rear passengers, in addition, it has a third row. in pajero rear seats stand too high, there is less space. But the trunk of the Sport is more spacious, and its shape is correct. The shape of the Mohave trunk is suboptimal, and the volume is slightly less.

Driving performance

The Mitsubishi turbo diesel has good returns, but the two-ton SUV drives without enthusiasm. Against his background, Kia is a real sprinter. There are no questions about the automatic machines of both cars. Pajero's handling is far from ideal: reactions are slow, in corners and on a straight line, it regularly requires steering. Mohave is also not ideal, but it holds the trajectory better, and is stable on a straight line. Opportunities brake systems rivals are close. Mitsubishi has an automatic braking system.

Dynamics

Controllability

Comfort

Pajero engine slightly louder, otherwise both cars are close in terms of noise isolation. Pajero's suspension cannot be punched on a bad road, however, small bumps are transmitted to the body in too much detail. Yes, and on large potholes, Mitsubishi actively “goats”. The energy intensity of the Mohave suspension is slightly lower, but it does not annoy the buildup and jumps. Mitsubishi has a standard two-zone “climate”, as well as the ability to regulate the air flow for rear passengers. There is a heated steering wheel. Kia has added full climate control and ventilation of the front seats to all this. Both cars have heated rear seats.

Smooth running

Adaptation to Russia

The Kia has good clearance under the rear axle, but the angle of entry and clearance under the engine protection is much less than the Mitsubishi. In addition, only the engine has protection, while Mitsubishi has all transmission elements covered. Kia is traditionally strong in the branching of the dealer network and warranty conditions. However, the number of Mitsubishi dealers is also large. Both cars have a full spare wheel under the trunk floor. The Kia's rear towing eye is poorly positioned: it's very easy to damage the bumper.

Behavior off the road

The possibilities of the Super Select transmission are wide. You can drive with all-wheel drive at high speed, there is a rear differential lock, a reduction gear, a hill descent assistant and an off-road mode that changes the sensitivity of the traction control and accelerator depending on driving conditions. Plus, the Pajero has very decent suspension travel. Against its background, Mohave looks pale: only a downshift and the ability to raise the body with the help of a rear air suspension. In addition, there is a high risk of overheating of the fluid coupling.
