In 1987, AMC was bought by Chrysler Corporation, but work on the creation of a new SUV was continued, although the Grand Cherokee went into serial production much later. The reason for such a long delay was the CEO of the company Lee Iacocca, he believed that the combined Jeep-Chrysler concern should produce minivans, and the debut of the Grand Cherokee was periodically postponed.
