(Body E32, E34, E36). BMW on-board computer instruction manual

Note: In the text, LCD means liquid crystal display. LCD to LCD
has no relationship.
The reverse may not be true;

(km C miles F)- The button to the left of the LCD - switches between English and
metric units.
Useful to switch miles/gallons/Fahrenheit to kilometers/liters/degrees after
transition to English language.
(to the right of the phototransistor to automatically adjust the brightness of the board. Pressing does not
subject).
Top row:
[ 1000]
To enter, respectively, thousands, hundreds, tens and units of a particular parameter.
[s/r] - Set/Reset
An analogue of the Enter key on simpler computers, saves the entered data.
When pressed in clock mode, the horn symbol lights up/off.
It will beep half a minute before the end of each hour (reminds you of the need
turn off the Tender May group and listen to the news on the subject “isn't it time for us
dump?) [ UHR / DAT] - Switches time to date and vice versa to display \\ changes.
The prompt to enter the year will appear after entering the date. The year 2000 works without issue.
The data is saved after pressing s / r, while the seconds run and are not displayed,
reset to 00.
- Fuel consumption 1 and fuel consumption 2. The report starts after pressing s/r.
Shows integral on 100 km of a way. Two registers can be
used to track consumption, for example, over the entire distance and any of its
site.
- How many km can you still drive on the remaining fuel. When value
dashes appear less than 15 km (it's time to feed the car). If there is a + symbol
next to km there is more fuel in the tank than indicated in km or full tank.
- average speed. The countdown starts after pressing s/r .
[A-TEMP]- Ambient air temperature. May not be relevant after
parking with a warm engine (the sensor in the front bumper heats up).
Updated as you go. At a temperature of + 3C when the ignition is turned on
a warning (beep) is issued. Means that at +3C it is theoretically possible
formation of ice on overpasses, etc., i.e. call for caution.
- Counts time 1 and time 2 (similar to consumption). First in minutes:
seconds, then hours: minutes.
The maximum value is 99 hours 55 minutes. It's just elapsed time and nothing else.
It stops when the ignition is turned off and resumes when it is turned on.
In cars equipped with parking heater (park ventilation) sets the time
start and stop heating
- Estimated time of arrival. Works only with data entered in DIST.

- You can enter the distance to the intended target. Just leads back
km count. In this case, the arrival time is extrapolated from the traffic dynamics.
The countdown starts after pressing s/r.
- Speed limit. If the current speed exceeds the set speed by more than 5
km/h, the BC flashes and the LED starts flashing. A message is displayed on the board. Pro
failure of the car to pick up speed.

Key to radio position, enter a code of 4 (any) digits and
press s / r, turn off the ignition. This activates the hood opening monitoring,
rear seat and take out the radio. If one of the three is not in place, the LED
flashes invitingly - it is necessary to check whether everything is closed / inserted into place.
The next time you turn on the ignition, you must enter the code (preferably the same as
which was at the beginning of any) and press s / r. Without this, it is impossible to start the engine, and after 3-
th start attempt.
If there is a display at the bottom of the board (there is no E34 on 520i and 525 td / tds), then the entire
information from the BC can be independently reflected on it. Displayed by
sequentially pressing the turn signal switch to the steering block (there is such an arrow and letters -BC)

The display sequence can be programmed.
To do this, press the switch and hold it for 3 seconds. PROG1 will light up.

Press on the BC those buttons, the information from which is desirable on the display. Finally
by s / r, while the information passes cyclically and it is not necessary to display all of it.
Use the km / miles button to select between costs. Similarly for two
ZEIT values and time/date. If s/r is pressed immediately after the PROG 1 prompt, the
the display will sequentially display all data from the BC.

To another language.
First - the key to position 2 - which is directly before the ignition - well, when the brushes are working, then hold the button that you have already said (symmetrically to resetting the mileage), hold it for a long time, but not 2 minutes, it should work somewhere in 30 seconds. IMHO. And the language will change, if you hold it again - it will change again (in focus !!!) ©, and so on until there is US English or UK English ....

in the computer and in the car:
Pa trailing edge engine compartment, right below the windshield, almost in the middle,
slightly to the right. You can see a gap in the plastic lining, open the hood.
You press the check control (symmetrically with respect to resetting the odometer on the board
on the right), insert the key, turn on the ignition (without starting the engine), gyushli tests.
VIN gives only the last 7 characters (if the wine does not match, then your boomer is successfully
stolen from some Hans ©)

BMW E36 on-board computer repair

If you have such an on-board computer (hereinafter referred to as BC) and from a certain moment horizontal or vertical segments of the indicator began to disappear and in order to view the inscriptions, you need to choose the viewing angle, and in cold weather some improvement occurs. The reason for this is a factory defect! Typical for this type of BC released in the 90s. Next, I will tell you how to overcome this problem at home.

The nature of the defect in copper oxide!

The indicator is connected to the main board with a graphite cable, the contact tracks on the board are left unchanged by the manufacturer - ordinary copper! So it oxidized, most likely entered into a chemical reaction with the adhesive composition of the graphite plume.

For starters, how to remove the BC. This is done quite simply, pry the BC with your hand through the hole in the upper part of the shelf located under the BC.

Bend the upper part of the shelf from the BC with any thin object and at the same time push the lower part of the BC outward, then it can be easily removed entirely.

Then boldly disconnect the connector and carry the BC to your home!

Now that the BC is on your table, you need to disassemble it by bending a few case latches.

If you have a 12V power supply that delivers a current of about 0.5A, then you can connect a BC at home.

To do this, you need to apply + 12V to three pins, if you count the connector pins clockwise from the side of the printed circuit board, then these are pins 9,10,14, and connect the (-) power supply to pin 11. The first output is indicated on the board, it is on the top left!

On the indicator after power-up, four inscriptions will be displayed in turn: the panel is not connected; see instructions; temperature -37; enter the time.

Now to the point (it’s a pity, of course, that I can’t show all the photos, now I don’t want to open the entire BC and break contacts that are not very well fixed):

Peel off, or rather, even tear off the tire, it is only necessary from the side of the printed circuit board !!! So
as on the indicator, gold is deposited, but it does not oxidize.
The shank must be torn off the board very carefully so as not to damage its contact in place
sticking to the screen! The main thing is to do everything slowly!

To get to the tire, it is necessary to desolder the contacts on the backlight lamps by suction. Then unscrew the two screws that secure the backlight housing to the board!

When you get to the glass LCD, remember how the filter substrates lie!

The angle of separation of the loop must be chosen so that the graphite would come off the board and remain
a little on this trail.

After that, the printed circuit board must be cleaned at the point of contact
tires to a copper sheen! The shank itself was carefully cut with scissors, i.e.,
shorten it by about 3mm, so as to leave the remaining graphite contact undestroyed by tearing off, the length of the cable allows this to be done, there remains without glue, a clean, undamaged graphite layer about 1mm in length, this is just enough for excellent contact.

Then we put this tire on the contacts and fasten it with transparent tape so that the tire does not move to the sides. There is a silicone soft pressure tape on the case, it must be peeled off and re-glued to the edge of the indicator holder case so that it now presses the graphite contacts of the cable to the board!

On the case, in the places of centering the printed circuit board, there are small guide posts made of plastic, so they must be carefully removed and micro-screws will be installed instead of them, I pre-drilled the guide holes!

If the contacts are aligned exactly, and the silicone rubber presses them along the entire length, then when you turn on the power, you will enjoy a high-quality picture from any angle of view to the screen!

I have a repaired BC tested by operation and frost -40 in the North and in the Crimean heat, everything is just super!

If pressing with three screws is not enough, you can use double-sided tape and stick it in the central parts of the indicator clamp:

Good luck with the repair, BMW lovers!

An on-board computer in the top three is not a mandatory thing. On many machines it is not there and it is expensive to install it yourself. This toy is installed on some machines, and its functions and capabilities will be useful to someone. There is no such thing on the author’s troika, and I have never seen it in my eyes. Information taken from the Internet.

On-board computer functions

(km C miles F)- The button to the left of the LCD - switches between English and metric units. It is useful to switch miles / gallons / fahrenheit to kilometers / liters / degrees after switching to English (to the right of the LCD is a phototransistor for automatically adjusting the brightness of the board. Can not be pressed).
