What is needed to connect the heated rear window? How to restore and repair the heated rear window if it does not work How does the rear window heater work.

There are such problems in the car, in which you can drive as before, but they constantly disturb, cause unpleasant feelings. Such malfunctions include a failure of the glass heating circuit at the rear of the car.

Usually this electrical circuit is always repairable. And there are troubles with these threads for the following reasons:

 • crack in the window
 • failure of contacts;
 • chain break;
 • natural wear of part of the track on the window;
 • scratching the track mechanically.

The most common thread break occurs on the window. Sometimes it can be determined visually, but more often with the help of a device. Next, we will figure out how to diagnose and how heating is repaired. rear window.

How to restore heat with glue

Let's analyze step by step process do-it-yourself rear window heating repair when the thread breaks. We will need:

 • electrical tester;
 • conductive adhesive used to repair glass;
 • tin foil;
 • Scotch;
 • solvent, clean cloth.

You can buy special glue for repairing rear window heating in a regular auto shop. We begin the repair of damaged heating filaments by turning on this system with a button in the cabin.

 1. First of all, we determine the place of the gap. To do this, turn on the tester in the voltmeter mode and, having applied the foil to the thread on the window, check the thread through the foil with a probe, moving from the positive contact. In this case, we apply another probe to the negative contact of the heater.
 2. At the break point, the voltage will jump from zero to several volts.
 3. Next, wipe the gap with a solvent.
 4. We stick adhesive tape on top and bottom of the thread, leaving a distance for the thickness of the thread.
 5. We apply conductive glue to repair the heating filaments with a syringe or brush. It all depends on what is offered in the kit with glue. In addition to the empty space in the gap, we coat about another centimeter of each end of the solid thread.
 6. We remove the tape. We wait about 24 hours for the glue to dry completely.
 7. We remove the excess, wipe the place of repair.

This is how do-it-yourself repair of damaged rear window heating filaments is done. It is clear that you will first have to buy a kit with glue.

What to do with contacts and other methods

And now let's talk about how to repair failed rear window heating contacts. To do this, you must first understand the principle of constructing this electrical circuit.

It turns on only when the ignition is on, an additional relay is responsible for this. It supplies power to the system button. When the button is turned on, the lamp lights up in parallel and the switching relay, powered by the fuse, is activated. Next, the voltage is applied to the heating filaments.

Repair of glass heating contacts consists in restoring their performance. To repair any faulty rear window heating terminal, we need:

 • multimeter;
 • screwdriver;
 • soldering iron, solder, rosin.

All the manipulations described below are available on the Internet as a video with the title: “do-it-yourself glass heating repair”. We will write further in words. So the actions are like this.

 1. We check all the elements of the circuit to find the fault. Let's look at the fuse first.
 2. Next, we check the serviceability of the button by measuring the contacts with a multimeter when it is turned on.
 3. We check the relay, when it is triggered, the corresponding contacts should give out a voltage of 12 V.
 4. We measure the voltage of the connector at the rear window.
 5. We check all the wires going from the button and the relay to the heating track system, we look at the state of the insulation, if there is a short circuit to the car body.
 6. We restore the faulty place by replacing the terminal, additional insulation or soldering the contact.

This is how the rear window heating contacts of the car are repaired. If the chain break is on the threads, then we find a specific place according to the algorithm already described above using a tester. Further, in the absence of purchased glue, you can repair a thread break like this.

Let's cook:

 • brass or copper rod;
 • file;
 • red paint;
 • Scotch.

 1. With a file we prepare shavings of brass or copper.
 2. Mix the paint with shavings in a ratio of 1/1.
 3. We turn on the heating.
 4. We stick adhesive tape on top and bottom of the faulty area, leaving a distance commensurate with the thickness of the thread. We clean this area.
 5. We apply a composition of paint and shavings.
 6. We expect it to dry for a few minutes. We remove the tape.

This is such an interesting technology. There is another option for restoring the lost section of the warming track in the absence of special glue. Consider it on the example of a specific car.

To repair the glass heating at the rear of Renault Logan, we need to use the following accessories:

 • copper sulfate (purchased at the fertilizer store);
 • battery electrolyte (sold in any car shop);
 • a piece of copper bar with a diameter of about 6 mm;
 • a piece of plain cloth.

This method is called electrolytic. It is necessary to perform the following manipulations.

 1. Wrap the end of the rod with a piece of cloth so that the tip hangs slightly, and fix it so that it does not fall off.
 2. You can prepare a solution for work in the following proportion: half a glass of water plus two teaspoons of copper sulfate, here is literally a hundredth of the electrolyte. Mix everything.
 3. We connect a bar with a rag as an electrode to the positive terminal car battery. In this case, the contact of the thread on the glass with the minus of the circuit must be serviceable.
 4. We dip the resulting positive electrode into the solution and drive along the lost area of the heating track. Copper from the solution should tighten the entire area.

This method is very helpful for any small scratches. In addition, it is not as difficult to perform as it might seem at first glance.

Heat recovery price

However, if you still don’t want to do anything yourself, it’s enough to contact a car service, where they will completely “ring out” the entire electrical circuit, quickly find the place of the defect and professionally repair it.

And what is the price for repairing glass heating, it is written in the table below. Here it is - with average data for major Russian cities.

City Price
Moscow 1100 rub.
St. Petersburg 1050 rub.
Ekaterinburg 1000 rub.
Samara 900 rub.

Here are the values obtained during work of medium complexity on a popular budget foreign car. For VAZ, it will turn out a little cheaper - twenty percent. It's just that car services always charge a little less for domestic cars, it so happened, although somewhere the mechanisms are easier to arrange on foreign cars.

Heated rear window of the car often fails. In most cases, it does not fail completely, but fragmentarily: individual zones or heating threads do not work. Replacing the glass in this case is completely irrational.

Exist various ways self repair threads and other elements of heating the rear window of the car in order to restore their performance. Let's consider them in this article.

Principle of operation

The heating of the rear window of the car occurs due to the heating of special threads applied to the glass when a direct current flows through them. The threads are made of conductive material of low resistance. The total current of the rear window defroster is about 10 amperes. The number of threads is about ten. Thus, a current of approximately 1 ampere flows through each filament. It is easy to calculate from Ohm's law that the resistance of the thread is about 12 ohms.

Heater filaments are applied when technological process production of rear glass at the factory in several ways:

 • electrochemical;
 • vacuum deposition (the most reliable method);
 • sticking.

The chemical composition of such threads can include various elements, alloys and composite materials: resins, copper, graphite, nickel, chromium, tungsten. The manufacturer does not declare the production technology, therefore, for each technology (heated glass), it is necessary to select the appropriate method for restoring performance.

For example, soldering is practically impossible if the filaments have been deposited in a vacuum with a carbon composition. In this case, only conductive adhesives are effective.

Wiring diagram

Normally, the heated rear window filaments are energized battery through the fuse, switch and relay systems according to the diagram below.

In some car models, the rear window heating can only be connected when the engine is running. For this, another blocking relay is provided. The fuse installed in the heater supply circuit is usually rated over 15 amps.

Symptoms

The main signs of a malfunctioning rear window heating:

 • does not turn on completely;
 • turns on, but not all threads work (the most common case);
 • works intermittently.

Why the rear window heating does not work: reasons, how to check, finding the place of failure

If the rear window heating has stopped working or it works, but intermittently, this may be due to the following reasons:

1. Vehicle electrical fault.

The search for the failure point should begin with the fuse that serves the heater. If it is serviceable, then check the heater switch (button), relay, electrical wiring to the heater contacts.

The rear window heating switch button is checked with a multimeter. Its contacts often burn out as a result of the flow of high current. In this case, it must be changed.

One of the most likely places for electrical equipment to malfunction is a break (or rot) of the place where the contact terminal is attached to the heater. Repair in this case is difficult. Soldering is required using special solders and flux. Bonding with conductive paste is also possible.

Often the wiring is damaged at the transition point of the corrugations, where the wiring from the body to the tailgate is located. It is required to open the corrugation, remove the wiring, search for the broken conductor and eliminate the place of the break.

2. Broken filaments.

Such a malfunction may be associated with the removal of the sun protection film, mechanical scratches on the glass, natural wear and tear.

Video - how to check the rear window heating with a multimeter:

To find a specific place where the thread breaks, if it is invisible to the eye, you must use a multimeter. Its probes should be sharpened or connected to sewing needles. This is necessary to ensure reliable contact of the probes with the heater filaments. First, a visual or tactile (touch) method determines the faulty thread (threads). She doesn't heat up. Then measure the resistance at the extreme sections of the thread.

After determining the location of the thread damage, it must be marked with a marker.

How to fix the heated rear window with your own hands

To repair the heated rear window, you should purchase a special conductive adhesive or ready-made kits for repairing the heater. It is necessary to carefully read the repair technology, which should be described on the packaging or the attached instructions in Russian. Success repair work determined by strict adherence to the technology specified in the instructions.

Video - how to glue the rear window heating contacts without removing the glass:

The repair technology is approximately the same for all industrial adhesives. The main thing is to degrease the surfaces well and not to rush. If you can't find special formulations for repair, you can try to make them yourself or use other recovery methods.

Independent production of conductive adhesive, soldering with special fluxes, electrolytic coating

1. Independent production of conductive composition.

The common BF-2 or BF-6 glue is often chosen as the basis. Other quick dry adhesives can be used. There are options for using polymer resin, paint, enamel. In order to make a conductive paste from these materials, it is necessary to add fine chips to it in a ratio of 1 to 1. Shavings can be “mined” with a fine file or needle file and copper, aluminum or brass material. After mixing the components, they are applied to the prepared surface through a homemade stencil. It is easy to make with construction tape or electrical tape.

The effectiveness of such a home-made composition will be no worse than the purchased one.

2. Soldering the place where the thread breaks and the terminal is disconnected.

Soldering the thread break is not possible if the distance between the ends of the thread is more than two millimeters. In this case, you can first use the electrochemical method. By restoring the heater terminal connection pins, soldering is more efficient and reliable. Soldering is performed by the classical method using active flux and solder. POS-18 or similar should be chosen as solder. The flux is better to use the FCA type based on zinc chloride.

3. electrolytic coating.

To carry out such a coating, a solution of copper sulfate is required (the proportion is 100 milliliters of water, two teaspoons of copper sulfate, you can add a few drops of battery electrolyte), rags, thread, stranded copper wire with a cross section of 6 sq. mm (for making a prototype of a copper brush).

Next, a copper brush made of a stripped conductor wrapped in rags and thread is connected with the opposite end of the wire to a +12 Volt (battery) power source, the negative battery is connected to the body or directly to the heater terminal. The brush is wetted in a homemade electrolyte. After that, a moistened brush is vigorously driven at the point of rupture of the filament. The treatment site is gradually covered with copper particles as a result of the electrolysis process.

Even 25 years ago, the rear window heater was considered almost a space technology, and its appearance on the fives and sevens in the export version caused furious delight among the wild owners of Soviet cars. Today, only a lazy manufacturer does not put heating filaments on the rear window, and this is no longer an option, but a standard equipment for all cars.

How does the rear window defroster work?

Heating threads are placed on the rear window of the car, some models have local heating of the windshield and rear side windows. The task of the device is to create a positive temperature on the glass surface, no matter what the temperature is outside. This will get rid of fogging, icing and provide decent visibility in all conditions.

As a standard, the rear window heating system consists of several elements. The composition depends on the model, but, for example, on Renault Logan the components are as follows:

 • conductive threads
 • control lamp on the instrument panel
 • fuse in the common block
 • power button
 • contacts
 • heater relay

The principle of operation is simple - the terminal from the conductive threads is connected to the on-board electrical system on one side, and tied to ground on the other. When current is applied to the filaments, they generate heat, heating the entire area of the glass.

Rear window defroster video tutorial

Typical heater failures

Malfunctions in the system are visible immediately after starting the engine - if the glass warms up unevenly, as evidenced by uneven release from fogging or ice, then you need to look for a problem. Most often, a non-working thread causes incomplete warm-up, but if the whole system refuses to work, then you need to look for the reason:

 • in violation of the contacts for connecting the block of threads to the electrical system of the car
 • in failure of the control relay
 • in the fuse in the electrical circuit

A non-working fuse is the easiest to identify - you can ring it with a tester, or put a known working one. If the heater does not start even now, consider the option with a relay. No one will disassemble and mess with the relay, it’s easier to immediately try to connect a working one. In the event of a fiasco, we are preparing to restore the threads or replace the rear-view glass completely.

Do-it-yourself heater repair

It is not advisable to change all the glass due to one burnt thread. Renault services do not repair threads, but offer to replace the glass completely, so such an act cannot be called rational. The procedure for restoring the heater is not complicated, does not take much time, and with the right approach, it will save a lot of money.

Search for a problematic thread and a break

Finding out which of the threads does not work is as easy as shelling pears - it simply will not warm up the glass in its zone, and you will have to tinker with determining the place of the break.

Each of the threads is connected to the lateral vertical buses in parallel, therefore, it can work independently of neighboring threads. If you managed to find the place of the gap visually, with the help of a magnifying glass - excellent. If not, then we need a voltmeter.

On the positive bus, the voltage should be 12 V, therefore, at the break point, the passage of current through the thread stops, and the voltmeter will show this to the nearest millimeter. To do this, you need to fix one probe of the voltmeter on the positive terminal, and with the heater on, run the second probe along the idle thread to the point where the voltmeter shows no voltage. The break is localized. In the same way, you can find out the place of the break with a car probe or an ohmmeter.

Troubleshooting methods

Do-it-yourself rear window heating repair can be done in several ways to restore the filament. The choice of method depends on the width of the gap and the material of the high-resistance filament, but best options will become the following:

 • Conductive pastes and adhesives. It is simple, inexpensive and effective method. It can be safely used if the width of the cliff is not more than 1 mm. On sale there are several special kits for the restoration of threads. Their price ranges from $ 12, they are sold in every auto shop. The kit already includes paste, a syringe and accessories for stripping.
 • Even cheaper will be the method of using conductive adhesive such as "Kontaktol" or "Elekont". In this case, it is enough to simply apply glue to the damaged area with an overlap of the problem area of 5-10 mm. If the glue is not fake, then such a connection can work for a very long time and not cause problems.
 • Method of galvanic shrinkage of copper. The method is very good, but in the presence of a whole chemical laboratory. With my own hands in garage conditions its application can only be considered as a bold experiment.
 • Soft solder. Affordable and reliable method of filament recovery. The threads are soldered using the conventional soldering method. But there is one important nuance- in no case do not try to clean the place of soldering with sandpaper. This will only increase the width of the gap. The thread is simply degreased with acetone.

Conductive pastes and adhesives are an inexpensive way to repair heating

If the gap width is more than a millimeter, then it is worth reinforcing the thread with a tinned copper vein 0.2 mm thick. For repair, soft solder brand POS-61 is used. In this case, the heating thread itself does not need to be tinned.

Thus, in almost 10 minutes you will solve the problem of rear window heating and save on expensive replacement of the heater.

What cars in 2018-2019 are most often bought in Russia

The number of cars on the roads of the Russian Federation is constantly growing - a fact that is confirmed by the annual study of sales of new and used models. So, based on the results of the study, which can answer the question of what cars are bought in Russia, for the first two months of 2017...

The current in the car is supplied from the positive through the ignition switch, as well as through the fuses. Then the voltage passes to the heater switch and is connected to the battery minus with the car body. One of the wires of the glass heating system is also connected to the body.

When the driver presses the system enable button, voltage is applied to the relay. It works, the power contacts are closed. The current enters the heaters, passes through the heating filaments and then goes through the body to the battery.

Heating element device

The heating element has the following device. There are conductive tires on the sides of the rear window. Special threads made of high-resistance materials are attached to them. The resistance of each thread is 10 ohms.

Their number depends on the size of the glass. So, each thread is a separate element that works separately from the others. All elements are connected to each other in parallel. Such a scheme allows to provide the system with high reliability. So, if one thread breaks, all the others will work.

Typical malfunctions

Before you repair the rear window heating threads with your own hands, you need to find out the malfunctions. Depending on what kind of malfunction manifests itself outwardly, it is possible to diagnose the operation of the system even without a multimeter.

It should be noted that the glass heating can only be started when the ignition is switched on. On some car models, you can turn on the glass heating only when the engine is running. This is done in order to reduce the load on the battery. The system for full operation requires from 10 to 25 A of current.

Heating does not turn on

So, if the system does not turn on from the corresponding button, the corresponding fuse may have failed. The button may also be broken. If the operation indicators are lit, but the glass does not fog up, repairing the rear window heating filaments should begin with checking the connectors and relays. In this case, by electrical diagrams find where the parts are installed and change them.

Slow sweat

Sometimes it is possible to observe cases when a significant amount of time passes between pressing the button and turning on the heating system to demist the glass. If there is low air temperature or frost outside, then the cause of this problem may be in poor contacts on one of the connectors. The resistance on the contact increases, the current becomes lower, the power drops.

To check this fault, you must use a multimeter. Change the voltage at the terminals of the heating system and the battery. These voltages should not differ.

There are streaks on the glass

This is the most common error. The problem is related to the breakage of the threads that are applied to the glass. This malfunction can be diagnosed by the stripes on the glass after the system is turned on.

The threads installed on the rear window are of low strength. And if they are mechanically acted at least a little, then the rear window heating filaments will need to be repaired.

Determine the location of the break

Finding a cliff is not difficult. Near the thread, fogging or permafrost will not disappear. That is why, in order to quickly find the damaged element, the threads count and then find the damaged place. But sometimes the cliffs are so insignificant that it is very difficult to notice them. Then you should use a voltmeter.

Due to the fact that one of the tires is connected to the car body, the negative wire of the multimeter is connected to the body. Next, the positive wire with the probe touches the first and second tires. On the first, the voltage is +12 V, and on the second - 0 V. If for some reason there is no access to the tires, then measurements can be taken where the threads come out from under the seal.

If the heating is on, there is 12 V in the system, but the threads do not heat, then this indicates that all wiring to the first bus is in working order. If there is no voltage, then this indicates poor contact. It is necessary to repair the threads and contacts of the heated rear window. The relay may also fail.

If there is voltage not only on the first, but also on the second bus, then they look for bad contacts in the circuit connecting the wires of the heating system to ground.

How to find a break

The filament is a tape with a resistance of 10 ohms. In different places, the voltage will be different. At the first point, the voltage will be 12 V, at the third - 6 V, at the fifth - 0 V. If you do not know which of the threads is damaged, it is easy to find. To do this, measure the voltage in the middle of each strip. If the thread is broken, then the voltage will be either 12 V or 0. Therefore, the break is on the left or right.

Repair

There are several ways to repair this system. The most efficient and fastest way is to use a rear window defogger filament repair kit.

There are many of them, they are designed to restore the integrity of the tapes. This set has it all. It is a syringe with a special paste. Reviews characterize Permatex well. Repair of rear window heating threads with it is very easy and simple. You don't need any additional tools. Everything is in the set.

So, how to make repairs? Everything is very simple:

 • Using alcohol or a solvent, we clean the area of the glass at the point where the thread breaks.
 • We take an adhesive tape in our hands and stick it on both sides of the heating element. In this case, the distance between the tape should not differ from the thickness of the heating thread.
 • Using a brush or syringe, apply conductive glue or paste (depending on which kit will be used). How to apply it? The glue should cover the whole part of the thread by 10 millimeters on each side.
 • Remove the tape and wait for the glue to dry. According to the instructions, the composition dries in 24 hours.
 • After a day, remove excess glue. This can be done with a sharp knife - kitchen or clerical. Be careful - the knife can easily damage the surface of the heating element.
 • We wipe the glass with a soft and slightly damp cloth.
 • We check the functionality of the element.

You can also use another product to repair the heated rear window filaments. This is "Elecont" of domestic production. The mass is applied to the place where the thread is broken. Glue is applied so that it overlaps the whole part of the thread on each side. After curing, the electric heating system will work again.

It is believed that glue can be made by yourself (from metal shavings). But you should not do this. The finished product is much more efficient. In addition, the reliability of the technology self-manufacturing glue is not confirmed.

Conclusion

So, we found out how the heating threads are arranged and how to repair them. The complexity of the repair lies in finding a broken tape. After all, the system will work even when half of all available threads break. True, the glass in this case will fog up half.

You will need

 • - voltmeter;
 • - low-tin solder and zinc chloride;
 • - graphite powder, iron filings, nitrolac, epoxy;
 • - silver filings and nitroglue;
 • - copper sulphate solution, fabric, long copper wire;
 • - electrically conductive adhesive

Instruction

Locate damage in the heating filaments using a voltmeter. To do this, connect one contact of the device to the conductive bus, and gently drive the other along the idle strip. Another method for finding a broken thread: on the fogged glass, turn on the heating. In this case, all the glass will quickly sweat, except for the place of damage. This method is simpler than the previous one, but it is not accurate and does not always work.

Regardless of the repair method chosen, first clean the damaged area from varnish until a metallic sheen appears. It is more convenient to do this with a bent wire. Degrease in any way. Having soldering skills, solder the damaged area with low-tin soft solder such as POS-18 or POSS-4-6. Use zinc chloride as a flux. If there is damage over an extended section, solder a thin copper or silver strand from a suitable piece of wire.

To repair using another method, coat the damaged area with a mixture of graphite powder and a small amount of epoxy glue (resin). For better work, install a strong magnet with reverse side glass, and pour fine metal filings in place of the restored area. They will restore the contact of the threads. After repair, treat the damaged area with nitro-lacquer. Remove the magnet after the varnish is completely dry. When applying sawdust, try to get as close as possible to the conductor strip, and not to the entire surface opposite the magnet. This will help make the repair site invisible.

For the third method, take silver filings. Prepare them by grinding off the alloy of the contact of an unnecessary power relay with a file. Pour sawdust into the fold of a sheet of paper and add a drop of nitro glue. With the end of the knife, quickly roll the sawdust into a cylinder with a diameter of 1 mm and a length of 2-3 mm. Apply it on the damaged area and crush, firmly pressing the sawdust. Remove excess.

Another method is perfect for restoring a damaged area or the entire heating thread. Prepare a copper sulphate solution consisting of 6 parts water, 2 parts powdered sulphate, and 1 part battery electrolyte. Mix thoroughly. Take a thick long copper wire, reaching from the positive terminal of the battery to the glass with threads. Wrap a piece of fabric 1-2 cm wide and 10-15 cm long around the end of the wire and secure in any way.

After connecting the other end of the wire to the positive terminal of the battery, soak the wound cloth in the prepared solution. Start vigorously rubbing the rupture site for 1-2 minutes. In this case, copper will begin to precipitate around the intact thread. The copper coating will look like patterns on frosty glass. When restoring the whole thread, start from where it is connected to the side live parts. This method is cheap, accessible, and has a high durability of the restored area. On the other hand, it is quite long.

To use a more modern method of restoration, purchase a special electrically conductive adhesive. When buying, consult the seller. To restore the thread, use the stencil included with the product. With a soft brush, apply glue through the stencil to the damaged area and dry for 10-15 minutes.
