Mitsubishi pajero 1st generation. History of Mitsubishi Pajero (Mitsubishi Pajero)

5 / 5 ( 1 voice )

Mitsubishi Pajero- This is a world-famous rally SUV from the Mitsubishi manufacturer. The full-size car is the leader of the manufacturer's model range. The name was given in honor of a cat that lives in southern Argentina.

In fact, Mitsubishi Pajero is a legendary car. The 4th generation received another update, which is the second restyling of the world famous off-road type car. All .

Car history

This legend began its history in the deep autumn of 1973. That year, the off-road version was shown for the first time at the Tokyo Motor Show. The car received an abundance of similar elements with the Jeep concept, especially in the cabin. An experimental version of the 2nd family came out strictly after 5 years, in 1978.

The Japanese leadership decided not to be content with the boundaries of the SUV, which imposed a kind of template on the current versions, but to create a full-fledged SUV. When 1983 came, Pajero took part in the Parish-Dakar rally for the first time. By 1985, after 2 unsuccessful trials, the car finally got 1 position in the championship.

To this day, the Japanese SUV is considered the luckiest car in the Rally Dakar. In addition, later there was a trend to create compact SUVs. Therefore, Japanese experts did not bypass this niche and created the Mitsubishi Pajero Pinin.

First generation (1982-1990)

A short time after the concept model was shown, the production version was opened, which hit the same Tokyo Motor Show in 1981. The vehicle has been produced since 1982. Initially, the car was produced only in a 3-door body version with a truncated wheelbase and 2 roof options - covered, metal and folding.

Mitsubishi Pajero 1 had a 2.0-liter power unit with 4 cylinders running on gasoline, a 2.6-liter gasoline engine with the same number of cylinders, a 2.3-liter diesel version and a 2.3-liter “engine” that also runs on diesel fuel and received a turbocharger.

It is worth noting that for those times, the car had a fairly rich arsenal of power units, which not many automobile companies could boast of.

The car was able to make a splash in the car market. Here it is worth clarifying one important thought - Pajero 1, in reality, represents the earliest off-road vehicle where an all-wheel drive system was installed. Thanks to the entire list of available equipment, it was possible to design the appearance of an off-road all-wheel drive model Pajero.

Such a car successfully combined the comfort of a “passenger car”. A year after the start of production of the debut family in Japan, the SUV was able to enter the global market. But the public, due to the insufficient spaciousness of the car (as well as the two-door version), did not have a rich choice. Therefore, even if there was a willingness to acquire this car, simple family could not do it, even for practical reasons.

Based on this, Mitsubishi decided in 1983 to build a 5-door modification with an increased wheelbase in order to meet the needs of customers around the world. The novelty was equipped with 2 motors. It was a 2.0-liter "engine" with a turbine, running on gasoline and a reinforced 2.3-liter turbocharged version, running on diesel fuel.

The car was offered in 3 different body styles: Standard, Semi-High Roof and High Roof. In a special order for the UN, the company released a unique 9-seater version. It was distinguished by the presence of a compacted armored top.

Mitsubishi Pajero High Roof

The interior of the Mitsubishi Pajero debut series is really comprehensive and practical. For example, the same chairs could be folded, which is very practical. The car made it possible to conveniently travel around various cities, and the construction of the rear row of seats made it possible to remove them in such a way that it would be easy to make a sleeping place for yourself.

But in the summer of 1984, the SUV has undergone some changes. The company decided to improve turbocharged diesel engines, increase their torque. Vehicles with a longer wheelbase had disc brakes on all four wheels.

The latest restyled series has been put on sale since 1987. The body was designed in a combination of 2 colors. The standard equipment had 15-inch rollers, the function of heating the seats installed in front, which were upholstered in leather, three-spoke wheel sports type, good music system with radio and cassette player.

Since 1987, Pajero was transferred under the control of a company that renamed the off-road car to Raider. In 1989, the car was already released under the control of an American company.
When 1988 rolled around, consumers saw newest motor from Mitsubishi, having a volume of 3.0 liters.

The all-wheel drive car had a V-shaped six-cylinder SOHC engine. A 2.5-liter turbocharged diesel version worked with him. The long-wheelbase series were distinguished by an upgraded suspension, which helped to make driving on a bad road comfortable.

The SUV was sold in 2 versions: a three-door version with a short base and a five-door version with an extended base. The function of the connected all-wheel drive system is even in the standard configuration. Base 1 of the Pajero family was later officially used for the design of the Hyundai Galloper, which was produced for 13 years.

Despite the fact that just the first generation was used as a platform for the Galloper, the Korean off-road version itself was more like the second.

In North and South America (except Brazil), Spain and India, this car bore the name Mitsubishi Montero, as in Spain the name "Pajero" sounded unfavorable. The English market sold a lot of models, so the company also decided to rename the car Shogun for it.

In 1990, the long-wheelbase Mitsubishi Pajero Elite series was launched into assembly line construction, which differed from the standard modification, among other things, in a high-quality interior. At the same time, the car took 1st position in the T3 category at Rally Tunis. The very next year, the version received second place in the overall championship at the Rally Parish-Dakar. By 1991, 3 special series were released in a modest edition:

  • Mitsubishi Pajero Togo, which was a short-wheelbase version of the "canvas top" and had a leather interior with expensive wood inserts, cast rollers and extended wheel arches;
  • Mitsubishi Pajero Exe - is a long-wheelbase version and has a central locking system, as well as a blue interior;
  • Mitsubishi Pajero Osaka - received a central locking system and had a leather interior, as well as inserts from expensive woods.

Second generation (1991-1999)

Before restyling (1991-1996)

Only 2 years have passed and the Japanese in 1989 and 1990 were able to sell more than 300,000 of their SUVs. After that, in 1991, when the 1st generation jeep was at its highest place, it was time for the second generation, which did not lose at all to the debut car. In 1991, they started producing Mitsubishi Pajero 2.

It had latest system Super Select 4WD, which allows you to drive in 4x4 mode on a dry road with the help of center differential. Installed a couple power plants. The novelty had a 3.0-liter 6G72 running on gasoline and a 2.5-liter 4D56 diesel engine.

The five-door version received 3 rows of seats, and the soft top body received an electric drive. On the second Pajero family there was a version with adjustable shock absorbers from the inside of the car, a mechanical type winch and hydraulic system ride height changes.

Along with comfortable modifications, Pajero produced a commercial version with engines from the initial family. There was also a rear suspension located on springs and a not so comfortable interior. In principle, the 2nd family of off-road cars was a deep modernization of the previous generation.

Despite this, Pajero looked more modern, grew a little in size, and the rear suspension received springs. The model was offered in 3-door and 5-door versions. The five-door was made with a high roof. By 1993, they decided to install more recent power plants, among which was a 3.5-liter 6G73 that ran on gasoline and received a pair of overhead camshafts.

In addition to it, they installed a 2.8-liter 4M40 unit operating on diesel fuel, where there was an intercooler and a timing chain drive. At the same time, the 6G72 gasoline unit was modernized, which received four valves for each cylinder. The rear-mounted suspension was equipped with springs and placed on 2 longitudinal-type levers with a Panhard rod, and in front there was a torsion beam on double transverse-type levers.

Thanks to the Super-Select 4WD system, you can choose rear or all-wheel drive, connect a reduction range of speeds and lock the center differential. Quite a few vehicles (for consumers in Europe) had a rear axle differential lock that could be controlled from the inside (some vehicles had a limited slip differential).

After restyling (1997-1999)

In 1997, the second generation of the Japanese SUV was updated. Changed the exterior and interior. The V-shaped 3.5-liter "six" was also upgraded. There was a place for the updated INVECS-II transmission, where there was the latest automatic transmission (a five-speed box was provided for the 3.5-liter engine, and a four-speed box for the 2.8-liter diesel engine).

At the same time, they released a homologated version for rally raids, as well as a “civilian” version of Pajero - Pajero Evolution, which had a 3.5-liter 6G74 engine. It had a MIVEC (Variable Valve Timing) system and produced 288 horsepower. They also provided for the execution with an "automatic", where it was possible to switch speeds manually INVECS II. The latest transmission, called the Super-Select 4WD-II, was fitted with a limited slip differential for the rear axle.

Mitsubishi Pajero Evolution

The following year, "foglights" began to be installed in the bumper, even in basic trim levels. The design of the power plant was simplified - instead of cylinder heads with 2 camshafts, other single-shaft heads were installed. The construction of the Japanese Mitsubishi Pajero 2nd generation in their homeland ended in 1999. As before, the license for the car was sold to a company from China, which produced this version to this day under the “label” Liebao Leopard.

When 2002 came, the need in European countries for this vehicle, which is more affordable than the 3rd family of the brand, prompted the company's management to recreate the production of the car in Japanese factories. Cars were sold to Europe under the name Pajero Classic. The model had a model of 1997, had a 3-door and 5-door body, an overhead valve diesel engine with a turbine, which produced 116 "horses".

The motor was paired with a 5-speed "mechanics" and a system all-wheel drive Easy Select, as well as a rear-mounted Torsen differential with a couple of degrees of locking. The model began to be sold in European countries in 1998. The car became more voluminous, as it received swollen barrel-shaped fenders. But, despite this, they did not stop producing versions with narrow wheels and wings. Changed headlights, grille, bumper and appearance of "foglights".

The luggage compartment is carpeted, but when you fold down the rear seats, it doesn't stand out for its spaciousness. This drawback is absent in the "five-door". Inside the Mitsubishi Pajero, 5 tall people can easily fit. On top of that, the company has provided another version - a seven-seat extended Semi High Roof Wagon.

The dashboard turned out to be rounded, free from corners. Instruments are easy to read, and the backlight has always satisfied motorists. I wonder what's inside the Japanese all-wheel drive SUV, even the pedal assembly is illuminated. The 1997 version has an altimeter, thermometer and inclinometer.

The controls for the heating and ventilation functions are very convenient. The steering wheel is pleasant to control, and the seatbacks can be adjusted in the lumbar region. Pleased with the presence of power windows that operate on an electric drive. The sunroof can also be opened from the inside with a button. Thanks to the autonomous heater, it is possible to heat the rear seats, and the passengers themselves can adjust its operation.

The all-wheel drive system functions without failures. If the company sold licenses for the first and second generation, then with the 3rd family, this was no longer the case. But the problems did not leave the Japanese - since 2000, a tax on the all-wheel drive system has been introduced.

Separately, it is worth highlighting the Mitsubishi Pajero mini (Pinin). Not only the Japanese worked on the design of the model. They were helped by specialists from an Italian company engaged in design and bodywork in the automotive field. After a short period of time, the Italians were able to release what the Mitsubishi management wanted. Therefore, in 1998, mass production of mini- Mitsubishi SUV Pajero Pinin.

In Italian, the word "Pinin" is translated as "the youngest". This is exactly what the car turned out to be in the list of “big” Pajero SUVs.

Technical characteristics of Mitsubishi Pajero Pinin

It was equipped with 1.8-liter 4G18 and 4G93 engines, which are gasoline options. They had direct fuel injection and developed 114, 120 "horses". The transmission was a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission (INVECS-II). Fuel consumption was significantly less, which is why, perhaps, many preferred this model to the “massive” Pajero.

Third generation (1999-2006)

The third family of Mitsubishi Pajero was decided to be produced in 1999. The novelty received load-bearing body instead of the frame and had independent spring suspension on all wheels. The transmission was upgraded, and the differential installed in the center was now asymmetrical. Servo drives were installed on all actuators.

European buyers were able to appreciate the novelty only in 2000. With the help of its excellent qualities and reputation, which has earned over eighteen years, to sell new model started at an accelerated pace. This family stood out strikingly from past machines.

The car became wider, lowered in height and lengthened by 70 millimeters. This model can accommodate up to seven passengers. They also produced a 3-door version with a wheelbase of 2,545 mm. She could accommodate 5 passengers. The third series has a powerful turbodiesel, Super-Select SS4-II all-wheel drive transmission, a five-speed gearbox, independent front and rear suspension and a high-strength body with an integrated frame.

The appearance of the car is remembered, and the interior stands out for its attractiveness - this has always separated Pajero from rivals. Jeep is convenient and comfortable. If we talk about the equipment, it is, as usual, at a high level. The salon has an automatic climate system, stereo equipment, leather interior upholstery, side airbags and other elements designed to increase comfort.

Mitsubishi Pajero 3-door

When 2004 rolled around, the company began selling a redesigned Mitsubishi Pajero III. Technically, the car did not stand out from the original version, however, the updates affected the interior and appearance. The car began to look smarter and more aristocratic with the help of round fog lights and a new bumper shape.

Instead of a red emblem, they began to put a nameplate made of chrome. Jeep rollers got 6 spokes. Thanks to the new footrests, which are perfectly matched to the lighting to help you get in and out of the car, the comfort of getting into the car has been significantly improved. At the rear, they put brand new lights and white swivel shades mounted in the bumper.

The bumper mounted at the rear did not receive a chrome insert. Behind flaunts a large tailgate, which is installed spare wheel, slightly shifted to the right. To the left of it is a license plate.

The technical part of the third generation

Mitsubishi Pajero III was produced with engines that run on gasoline and diesel fuel. For the countries of independent states, there was a V-shaped six-cylinder 3.5-liter engine running on gasoline and having GDI direct injection technology into the combustion chamber.

The service is able to monitor itself when it is necessary to make an injection and can adjust the level fuel mixture. Such a unit produces 202 horsepower and a torque of 318 N.M. It is important that already 80 percent of the thrust can be used from 1,500 rpm. V-shaped "sixes", which were intended for sales on Japanese market, developed 220 and 245 "horses".

From the very beginning, many considered such an engine with GDI support to be ideal, however, time has put all the points. Practice has shown that the motor does not like "our" gasoline, as a result, the fuel pump starts to act up. The power plant running on diesel fuel, which received a volume of 3.2 liters, develops 160 horsepower, and the figure showing the torque is even greater than that of the gasoline "brother" - 372 N.M.

A considerable advantage of the 3.2-liter engine is the installation of a chain in the gas distribution system, while a belt was installed on the 3.5-liter. However, the chain also needs a clear replacement (180,000 km). But there is also a drawback to the diesel version - after a while, the intake manifold becomes clogged. And all again because of low-quality fuel.

There is also a 2.5-liter diesel engine that develops 100 "horses". It is installed only on regular modifications of the GL. The cars, which were destined for the Arab region, had a proven V-shaped 6-cylinder 3.0-liter engine.

It allows you to issue 179 horsepower. For the United States market, they offer a 3.8-liter gasoline unit that produces 218 "horses". The all-wheel drive system allowed four-wheel drive to be connected while driving, however, in order to engage in a lower gear, you must come to a complete stop.

Normal mode provides for the transfer of 37 percent of the torque to the front wheels and 63 percent to the rear. Vehicles that went to the CIS countries had a 5-speed "automatic" Invecs 2, where it is possible to switch speeds in manual mode. In addition to the "automatic", they also installed a 5-speed "mechanics".

fourth generation

The model began to be produced in 2006. The Japanese experienced several minor improvements, the last of which took place in 2014. They presented a restyled version of the off-road car at MMAC-2014.

Exterior

The Mitsubishi Pajero is one of the few off-road vehicles that has remained true to its classic off-road design. The appearance of the car is still simple, brutal and evokes a feeling of reliability and confidence. When restyling, the car received a brand new grille, another front bumper with built-in running lights lighting and other forms of foglights.

The latest generation came out bright and modern, but all the same, the smooth “feminine” lines that are inherent in current crossovers did not find their place in the external image. The appearance was created with an emphasis on the dimensions of the car - a distinctive grille, large headlights, an air intake, aerodynamic elements - all this looks very harmonious.

The plane of the hood, which is made of aluminum, is like a dining table. The side part immediately shows its large wheel arches, and large doors are an excellent guarantee of comfort and visibility. side mirrors with repeaters received large dimensions and provide excellent rear visibility. There is also a large glazing area, a flat roof and a large section of the rear from the vertical pillar.

Since this car is not small, it was necessary to make it comfortable for people to get in and out of it. This was facilitated by the presence of wide steps, which also protect the thresholds of the car from mechanical damage.

The body component of an off-road vehicle, due to the presence of a built-in frame, has high rigidity, because of this, the car has excellent handling - when driving at high speed and overcoming off-road. In order to enhance additional body safety, strong moldings were provided on the doors. Also, do not forget about the protection of the suspension and the department of the power unit.

Looking at the back of the car, you immediately understand that he is not afraid of off-road. This is evidenced by the high bumper. As a coloring of the body part, the presence of beige, gray, white, silver and graphite colors is used. In addition to the basic colors, you can choose others, for example, if you want to paint the car brown, you will need to pay about 17,000 rubles.

Generally speaking, the Pajero is a classic off-road brutal car that does not want to switch to modern design standards. The stern of the Mitsubishi Pajero was not without style. There you can find a bumper with a spare tire.

Mitsubishi Pajero 4th generation has individuality and expressiveness. Decorate the whole image with 18-inch alloy wheels. To increase the practicality of the jeep, the designers have provided roof rails.

When the 4th generation appeared, most experts argued whether this new car or deep restyling 3 families. After all, according to outward signs the cars are quite similar. The bow and stern parts are strikingly different, but the middle part has retained recognizable features from the 3rd generation.

Interior

Patriotic Mitsubishi variation The Pajero is designed to comfortably accommodate 5 people with a chauffeur. The rear seats can freely accommodate passengers with any configuration. All interior materials are very pleasant, both in tactile and visual terms. The seats installed in front, which received the heating function, stand out well.

They still know how to support the body and hips well. I also really like the presence of a comfortable steering wheel, on which the cruise control and music system control keys are placed. He was assigned only height adjustment, which is not very good, but this is offset by a wide choice of driver seat settings.

In order to get used to the location of the instrument panel, keys and control levers, it only takes a few minutes. This testifies to the good ergonomics of the interior, which is already at the usual high level. The center console has three zones where there is air conditioner, on-board computer and multimedia system.

The automatic transmission selector and transfer lever look very high quality. The rear-mounted seats provide enough free space in any direction. It is almost impossible to reach the backs of the front seats, as well as sitting to reach the ceiling with your head.

Dashboard

Installed for rear passengers sofa, can change the angle of the backrest. Speaking of the luggage compartment, it is worth saying that it is rather big here and has 663 liters of usable space, despite the fact that five people are already sitting. If necessary, this number can be increased to a fantastic 1,789 liters of free space, while folding the rear seats.

It is also worth noting that if you fold the back row, you can sleep in the car at full height. Generally speaking, everything is quite simple in the design of the cabin. There are no fancy details, stylish inserts, but the interior looks quite presentable and of high quality, partly due to the use of expensive materials.

The driver's seat stands out for good visibility. There is one small drawback - this is insufficient noise isolation, which many car owners complain about. The latest update should have fixed this issue.

Specifications

power unit

In the Russian Federation, the 4th generation Mitsubishi Pajero will be offered with 3 variations of power plants: a pair of engines that operate on gasoline and one engine on diesel fuel. In general, the company offers a wider range of choice of power plants. As mentioned above, this list begins with a 3.0-liter engine that produces about 178 horsepower.

It has a 24-valve SOHC gas distribution system and an ECI-Multi distributed fuel injection system. It consumes the “weakest” power unit from the line in combined mode for both boxes about 12.2 liters per hundred.

Next comes the 3.8-liter 6G75, which also has a V-6. It has a 24-valve gas distribution mechanism, ECI-Multi distributed fuel injection and a MIVEC variable valve timing system. Its power is 250 horses. He "eats" AI-95 and requires 13.5 liters in the combined cycle.

The diesel variation 4M41 comes with 4 cylinders, which have an in-line layout. The diesel has a 3.2-liter volume and a 16-valve DOHC timing system with a chain drive, Common Rail Di-D electronic direct injection and turbocharging, which makes it possible to develop 200 horsepower.

The diesel version of the engine can accelerate the car to 185 km / h of the speed limit, while spending about 11.1 seconds to reach the mark of 100 km / h. But he "eats" less - about 8.9 liters per hundred kilometers in combined mode.

The diesel power unit is a fairly reliable engine, felt problem areas occur after 100 - 120 thousand kilometers, when the engine is more sensitive to fuel quality and the high pressure valve starts to act up.

Transmission

It is clear that you should not expect excellent dynamics from a 3.0-liter 178-horsepower engine, therefore, together with a 5-speed manual gearbox, the car reaches the first hundred in 12.6 seconds. The same motor, but with an automatic 5-band automatic, takes 13.6 seconds to reach a speed limit of 100 km / h. 175 km / h - just like that maximum speed regardless of the selected gearbox.

The first hundred of a jeep with a 3.8-liter 250-horsepower engine, paired with a 5-band automatic transmission, is reached in 10.8 seconds, and the maximum speed is at the level of 200 km / h. The 4M41 engine is synchronized only with the 5-band "automatic" INVECS-II, which has an electronic control that allows you to adjust to the owner's driving style.

The SUV was built on a confident platform and equipped in all modifications with a system permanent drive Super Select 4WD II based on an asymmetrical center differential platform with locking options in automatic mode(viscous coupling), or forced mechanical blocking, which is not available in starting modifications. Moreover, there is a 2-speed transfer case, and the version with top engines as additional option get a lockable rear differential.

Suspension

It's no secret what off-road performance this Mitsubishi Pajero has - 12 Dakar Rally titles. The suspension is fully independent, on springs. Ahead are double wishbones, and on rear axle multi-link system.

Speaking of functionality mitsubishi suspension Pajero 4th generation, then it survives well, not perfect, but not critically bad either. Most weakness- these are the bushings of the front and rear stabilizers that can withstand no more than 50,000 km

Steering

Behind steering the rack mechanism is responsible, which is complemented by a hydraulic booster. Driving a car is a pleasure.

Brake system

Speaking of brake system, it is worth noting that there are ventilated disc brakes everywhere - 4-piston calipers are in front, and parking brake drums are built into the wheels at the back. There are problems with wear pads and brake discs.

Dimensions

Speaking about the overall component of the 4th generation Mitsubishi Pajero, they are almost preserved, the length of the SUV is 4,900 mm, wheelbase 2,780 mm wide, the car is 1,875 mm wide and 1,890 mm high. The ride height will vary depending on the modification - from 225 to 235 mm, which is very good, given the quality of our roads.

With him it will not be scary to go loaded to the country or on business. The vehicle is able to overcome fords up to 700 mm deep, storm the rise with a driving angle of up to 36.6 degrees and tow a trailer equipped with brakes weighing from 1,800 to 3,300 kg. By weight, he himself occupies from 2,100 - 2,380 kg. Depending on what equipment will be chosen, various alloy wheels with a diagonal of 17-18 inches will be installed.

Security

Mitsubishi Pajero IV generation was able to assemble a list of modern technologies that ensure safety. The main "chip" can be called a special reinforced body structure, designed specifically to resist impact. There are also a number of electronic assistants.

Among them are the presence of ABS, EBD, Break Assist, Brake Override System systems, which allow for a confident stop. vehicle despite the most extreme conditions.

Based on the Australian NRMA crash test, it became clear that the technical filling of the 4th family in the field of safety turned out to be very effective. Out of 37 maximum points for assessing the safety of the driver and passengers, the car was able to score 28.41 points. However, the assessment of pedestrian safety showed that when hit with a car, you will not envy him, because the SUV received only 2 points out of 36 possible in this segment.

All areas of the driver's and passenger's torso were able to score highly in frontal and side impact protection. There is also a caveat here - the driver's knees during a direct impact received 2 points out of 4 maximum. This is due to the lack of knee airbags.

Passive safety includes:

  • Frontal airbags that deploy in 2 stages;
  • Front side airbags;
  • Curtain type airbags;
  • Rear door locks (protection for children);
  • Safety bars in the doors;
  • 3-point seat belt pretensioners with retractable reels.

TO active safety and pendants include the presence of:

  • Anti-lock braking system;
  • Stability systems;
  • Assistance with emergency braking;
  • Anti-slip system;
  • A system that distributes braking forces;
  • Locking rear differential.

Fifth generation

The Japanese company Mitsubishi knows how to surprise, intrigue and even mislead its rivals. This is what happened during the Tokyo Motor Show, when the company introduced the concept version of the 5th generation of Pajero jeeps. The novelty was able to attract attention and makes you ask a lot of questions, so the task of the company's management has been completed.

Many design and development departments love to come up with something new and unique. However, it is important to understand that cars are not a white canvas. But workers Japanese company managed to jump above their heads, because the designers made an unusual exterior, interior layout and equipped the model with non-standard electronic equipment.

The windshield flows smoothly into the glass-type roof, providing a panoramic view and indicative of cosmic tones. There is no side rack at all, and the doors open in different directions. There are no handles on the doors, because they open electronically.

"Tidy" was made in the form of a sensor unit. She was placed on a torpedo. Unusually, it, like a bar counter, passes the boundary between the chairs. Once inside, you feel spacious, however, the sensory "border" seems a little fragile and takes up a lot of free space. The appearance of the model is slightly out of proportion, but the stern is more harmonious.

Touching on the topic technical equipment It is worth noting that there are no special innovations here. The presence of a gasoline power unit, which is included in the front-engine layout, is provided, supplemented by the PHEV system. The electric motor is also located in front.

Behind you can find only a block of electric batteries. This is not to say that the Mitsubishi Pajero V is tied to an outlet, however, the model may well become an environmentally friendly means of transportation. As a likely internal combustion engine, a 3.0-liter will be used turbocharged engine V6 MIVEC with Super-Charger and quite capacious accumulator battery, completing the auxiliary option.

The power of the electric motor is 70 kW. Enough charge should be up to 40 kilometers. The link between the motors and the wheels will be an 8-speed "automatic" transmission.

Advantages and disadvantages

Machine advantages

Summing up

The 4th generation of Mitsubishi Pajero, though not radically changed the car, but still made it more stylish. In general, his appearance immediately makes you respect him, no matter where he is, on the road or off-road. The car inspires a sense of confidence and reliability. Massive wheel arches big wheels light alloy, footboard, roof rails and a full-size spare wheel are eloquent evidence of the serious intentions of the car.

High ground clearance will allow you not to worry not only about curbs, but also about fords up to 700 mm deep. Getting into the salon you will not be able to notice any exquisite elements, everything is quite simple, neat and ergonomics are up to the mark. The front seats are very comfortable, which can be said about the rear, where three adults can easily fit. Moreover, they will not interfere with the roof over their heads and the front seatbacks.

The luggage compartment is simply huge, which, if necessary, can still be increased by folding down the rear seatbacks. The power units are quite strong and cope with their tasks well. All-wheel drive allows you to fully experience all the pleasure of off-road driving. A good degree of equipment, even in the basic version, will please many.

The company has not forgotten about ensuring the proper level of security, which can protect the lives of not only the driver, but also the passengers sitting nearby. Various assistance services that are designed to help the driver in difficult situations are also present in the car. In general, it turned out very nice car with excellent off-road performance and an acceptable price / quality ratio.

Despite the fact that the concept version of the fifth generation Mitsubishi Pajero has already been presented, there is no real version yet. Of course, the appearance of the prototype is impressive, however, it is far from the appearance of the real one. male SUV. It turns out that the company went over a little with a futuristic style, although who knows, maybe some element will be able to find a use for itself in a future series. But for now, the V version is far from off-road.

In part, this is noticeable by not enough big wheels, impractical electric doors and a questionable touch-screen "delimiter" of the cabin. And the power reserve of 40 km is clearly not enough to consider the model independent of the internal combustion engine to a greater extent.

It seems that even if this model comes out with the same exterior and filling, most drivers will not want to change from their powerful, masculine and brutal SUVs to a hybrid car with a futuristic design. However, only time will clarify everything, because there is no doubt that the specialists of the Japanese company are now working on the next generation.

Test Drive

Video review

I had no illusions going for a test Pajero after the New Year holidays. Well, another SUV, besides an old one - the fourth generation saw the light already in 2007, survived two restylings ... And in general, who will surprise Pajero - there are so many of them on the roads of Moscow!

I must admit that fate decreed that the last Pajero (which, by the way, was also the first) that I had a chance to ride, and as a passenger, happened in my life back in 1995. Since then, somehow it hasn't happened. But again I was wrong in my expectations.

Literally an hour before I sat behind the wheel of a Pajero, I handed over another test car - a VW Caravelle: a large eight-seat "bead" with a huge glass area and a high seating position. But even after the "bus", plunging into the Pajero, I caught only one word in my head - "aquarium". Tall ceiling, huge windows, visually thin door cards, a lot of air in the cabin… Even the Caravel did not give such a feeling of spaciousness!

Forward to the past!

The interior also caused a storm of emotions. Pajero is a time machine! Torpedoes, door cards, buttons, instruments, square knobs of gearshift levers and transfer cases - all this seemed to “came” straight to me from the last decade of the last century, when the cars were real, iron and were made forever, and not like now, when. Simple lines, no fashionable design frills, everything is square, severe and simple. Maybe such an archaism will seem to someone unworthy of a car of the second decade of the 21st century, but for me, a person who grew up just on the design of the 90s, it warms the soul and inspires hope that everything inside this car is just as reliable and “for centuries” as was customary in those days.

Is that the Mitsubishi Connect touch multimedia panel looks completely foreign here. A color touchscreen without a single physical button looks wild against the background of harsh buttons and knobs. This asks for a two-din radio tape recorder with a cassette deck, or a CD player, at worst. By the way, about the “condo” buttons: I once complained that the “oak” buttons for seat heating in a modern cabin look very old-school. The same buttons (what can you do - unification) in the interior of the Pajero look like family. Rather, they are native to this salon.

The leather of the seats is oak sackcloth. Feels like officer's boots. This is in the tradition of Mitsubishi - a similar dressing can be found on all cars of the brand. And if in Outlander it looks deliberately rude, here it is very organic. Before us is a real harsh SUV. It’s not scary to plop into such skin with your back soiled with clay - nothing will happen to it! In a word, the Pajero salon is a direct greeting from the nineties. Some may not like it, but the number of cars on the roads suggests that conservatism is held in high esteem.

Personally, thanks to this simplicity and “old times”, I felt very comfortable driving Pajero, like at home in my childhood - safely and securely. There are no unnecessary embellishments, no millions of luminous buttons and functions that look beautiful and are expensive, but which you will use once in a lifetime, and even then out of curiosity.

Even the climate control here is single-zone - no pampering and tenderness (here even I was surprised - in the top-end configuration of the car, two "climate" zones could have been made for two and a half million, but apparently this would not have been brutal enough). But there is a separate rear heater.

The fact that Pajero is a thoroughbred SUV is also indicated by the number of options for transforming the interior. You will not find this on modern "plastics". The rear seats can change the slope of the backs, the backs themselves fold in a 40:60 ratio, the entire seats can also be folded towards the front row, forming just a huge trunk. And if you pull the headrests out of the front seats and move them forward, then you can make an almost flat surface out of all the seats. And it's easy to put two basketball players two meters tall to sleep. At the same time, you don’t even need to unload the trunk - even now on an expedition to the North! You don't see that very often these days.

Warm tube V6

The technical stuffing of the wonderful Pajero car does not deviate from the old-school ideology. Our test car had a 3.0-litre warm-tube petrol V6. The formula is quite standard for Pajero - the ancestor of this motor was installed on the first generation of an SUV. The motor has one camshaft per head (!), distributed fuel injection and develops 174 hp. from. at 5,250 rpm. Not the most outstanding figures, but an SUV weighing under two and a half tons is much more important than traction, but here it is in abundance: 261 Nm at 4,000 rpm. Another attribute of simplicity is that the motor consumes 92nd gasoline.

In practice, from the first seconds of engine operation, you understand that under the hood there is not some kind of modern turbo whistle, but a real “cast iron”, with a resource of many hundreds of thousands of kilometers. By the way, despite the external similarity in layout and volume, the Pajero motor has nothing to do with the engine that is installed on the Outlander. It is also interesting that, losing in all respects, subjectively, the Pajero engine drags better than the more powerful and high-torque Outlander unit. Although it's probably just the magic of the machine. Big and iron.

Mitsubishi Pajero IV
Claimed fuel consumption per 100 km

A large engine uses gasoline very carefully, especially considering the mass of an SUV. For a week of testing in the "City and Highway for the Weekend" mode, the computer showed 13.7 l / 100 km of 92nd gasoline. In my opinion, quite a decent indicator. The same Outlander with a three-liter engine and one and a half times less weight consumes about the same amount. Again, subjectively, but it is a comfortable or uncomfortable feeling of consumption that is given not so much by the consumption figure itself, as by compliance with its expectations. And if a “bucket with a little” for a hundred in the Outlander causes resentment, then the same figure on the Pajero fits well into the comfort waiting zone.

Legendary Super Select

Pajero was once considered a very progressive car. Independent suspensions and a frame integrated into the body looked innovative against the background of frame Kruzaks and other Defenders with springs and axles. However, "Kruzaks", although they went ahead, and only Pajero seemed to freeze in their best years- those already distant.

Real SUVs are dying off like a class. Demand for such machines in a global sense is falling. More and more people are wondering - why all these locks and lowers, if in everyday life there is enough of a front end connected by an automatic clutch? There are almost no real enthusiasts of "part-time". But the legendary Super Select Pajero transmission is another reason to go to the salon right now.

Perhaps, for complete "off-road" happiness, there is not only a front differential lock. The rest: interaxle blocking, rear interwheel blocking (with automatic shutdown of all electronic "collars"), lowering row - it's all there. Perhaps, in terms of arsenal, only yes can be compared with him now Land cruiser. But the price...

The top Pajero will cost about the cost of the base one. There is no need to talk about the “big” Land Cruiser, and even more so the “Gelika”! In a word, in fact, in its price segment, he remained almost alone. Somewhere a little lower, on an “honest” all-wheel drive, with locks and lowers, they are poking around in the ruts of the market and, but this is a completely different off-road team. Even the once formidable Pathfinder rounded out, got a CVT and hit the asphalt and, forgive him Patrol, . In a word, our Pajero was left all alone.

Instead of saying goodbye

In general, in its habits Pajero is similar to a large ATV. No, not the level of comfort, but the feeling of transparency, understandability of the car to drive and the ease with which you find a common language with the car. Some of its honesty and simplicity.

Owner reviews Mitsubishi Pajero I

Mitsubishi Pajero I, 1983

If you treat technology correctly and with love, then the "cart" will become a helicopter. Only after 5 years operation of Mitsubishi Pajero I was overhauled "dead" engine, cook body, replaced ball bearings, anthers front axle shafts and tie rod ends. Also, the spring bushings were replaced with “Nivovsky” trimmed silent blocks, I note that no one has done all this before me, hence the conclusion - in 24 years the car was made capitally only once, and this is “super reliability”. Mitsubishi Pajero I, although the car is outdated, it suits me in everything. This is my "weekend" car, so to speak. I love to ride it for fishing.

Advantages : excellent cross-country ability, enviable maintainability, long service life and the availability of original spare parts, by the way, are quite inexpensive.

disadvantages : if not for our diesel fuel, then we would not have raised the economy of foreign countries through the purchase of spare parts for our cars.

Roman, Tver

Mitsubishi Pajero I, 1987

About the car: Mitsubishi Pajero I, 1987 onwards, 2.5 TD (turbine removed), 4 automatic transmissions, 350 thousand mileage. Exterior: in general, everything is solid and strict (minimalism, nothing more). Looks like a Mercedes cube (G-class). Aerodynamics "lame", because of the whistle in the front struts. In general, on such a “tank”, as one of my acquaintances put it, it’s not a shame to go to the showdown. For hunting, fishing and active field trips - generally super. A spare tire on the tailgate completes the already serious look. Interior: everything is done with Chelyabinsk severity. Dashboard - "iron". Everything is screwed tightly, it will not creak, even if you really want to. In the center rises a compass, a body roll meter and a battery charge indicator.

The car is very reliable (if everything is changed, lubricated and checked in time), made for uncompromising operation in off-road conditions. Mitsubishi Pajero I is a real jeep, with a forced connection of the front end, an increased and decreased row of transfer cases. Off-road performance is top notch. "Diesel" and clearance allow you not to be afraid of almost any puddles, edges and sand. Somehow I even had a chance to pull the UAZ out of the sand. With the turbine removed, and even with the automatic, the dynamics, frankly, are useless. And the cost is much higher. So I still advise you not to remove the turbine, pour good oil and do not turn off the car immediately after stopping (let the turbine blades cool down - it will live longer). Cruise speed on the highway - 100.

Advantages : tank, cheap to maintain.

disadvantages : not enough comfort and dynamics.

Alexey, St. Petersburg

Mitsubishi Pajero I, 1986

Great city jeep. I have a 3 door. The high seating position of the Mitsubishi Pajero I provides good review. Small and economical "diesel" 10-12 l / 100 km in the city, powerful - 103 hp A dynamic jeep that will satisfy many fans of "street racing". The small size (in comparison with the American giants) allows you to always find a gap in city traffic jams and not waste your time, a jeep - you can drive onto the curb. Mitsubishi Pajero I showed itself well in off-road conditions - the transfer case has four positions and in the most extreme conditions it will block all possible differentials and take you out of the mud in a low gear. Automatic transmission - provides comfort and is suitable for novice motorists. Comfortable - spacious salon, four people feel great at long trips, as well as air conditioning, CD-radio, full power accessories, height-adjustable seats. Large tailgate - you can shove the refrigerator.

Advantages : economical SUV. Comfortable and safe.

disadvantages : not found.

Prior to the advent of this model, the Mitsubishi concern was engaged in the licensed production of off-road vehicles under the Jeep brand under an American license, but in 1976, the Mitsubishi Jeep Pajero concept car was presented to the public at the Tokyo Motor Show, which embodied a new 4WD concept that brought it closer to cars. And in 1982, mass production of the model began, which became the flagship of the company's lineup. Due to the fact that the model was constantly improved, acquiring more and more luxury, it gained immense popularity. In 1983, the Pajero entered the Paris-Dakar rally and has since become one of the most popular cars in the world. Having demonstrated its superiority over classmates, Pajero instantly soared up in the world car ratings. The name of the car comes from the name of a wild cat that lives in Argentina, or rather, in Patagonia.

The Van modification with a short body debuted first in 1982. This car was equipped with diesel turbine and atmospheric engines, was produced in versions with a standard, semi-high and high roof and had Canvas Top and Metal Roof modifications. A year later, a Wagon modification appeared on sale (with a body in the size of the F-segment). In addition, to model range a modification of the Pajero Estate was added, which has a long body. In 1989, the Pajero Super was launched into the series, which differed from the basic version in a seven-seat interior, walnut panel and door lining, and body color. The most expensive modification was the 3.0 Super Exceed, which had a sunroof, cruise control, power accessories, dual air conditioning, power seats, a leather steering wheel braid and other options that distinguished the top version.

The main power unit for the Pajero is a 4-cylinder 2.5-liter diesel 4D56 (SOHC), which, depending on the modification (atmospheric version or turbocharged), has a power of 85 or 94 hp. At the same time, the turbocharged version has a higher torque, reaching a value of 226 Nm at 2000 rpm, while the atmospheric version has this parameter of 196 Nm. Top trims used a 3-liter V-6 Gas engine 6G72 (SOHC), which was distinguished by the presence of an ECI-MULTI injection system and a relatively low “speed”, developing a maximum power of 150 hp. at 5000 rpm, but the torque at the same time reached its value of 231 Nm at only 2500 rpm. Fuel consumption with it is 13.7 liters "per hundred" in mixed mode. Different versions also differed in the volume of the fuel tank: 60 or 90 liters.

The first generation of the Mitsubishi Pajero SUV had a fairly progressive design of the front suspension - independent torsion bar, thanks to which the habits of the "wild cat" differed for the better, for example, in such a parameter as geometric cross-country ability, which is very important for an SUV. In addition, the front independent suspension significantly increased the smoothness of the ride. The car has an all-wheel drive transmission of the Part-Time type - switchable front axle without a center differential, so you can’t constantly move around on all-wheel drive.

Over the ten years of its existence, Pajero I has not undergone significant changes in terms of security systems and means. The standard set included only three-point belts, and even then in later versions of expensive trim levels, and, of course, by modern standards, the level Mitsubishi security Pajero is low. In crash tests, first-generation cars also could not boast of high results, but this is the same for all SUVs of those years.

Mitsubishi Pajero of the first generation turned out to be a very successful model and, in some respects, was far ahead of the competitors of its time. Today, these cars, of course, are hopelessly outdated, but due to the presence of a frame, high quality production and generally high reliability, many copies are still successfully operated.

Read completely

A worthy, unprecedentedly solid appearance of a car attracts attention, both in a large metropolis and on country roads. The unique design of the radiator grille, the confident lines of the front bumper, the expressive head optics, the refined 18-inch wheels (supplied in the Ultimate version) define the original exterior. The front protection and the stylish black roof rails are not only highly practical and functional, but are also eye-catching design elements.

Interior

In the design of the interior of the Pajero 4 car, only high-quality finishing materials are used, which leads to a high level of its respectability and comfort. The maximum concentration of the driver's attention on driving is achieved through the ergonomic organization of the interior. The presence of excellent visibility, anatomical seats, steering column height adjustment, convenient placement of the media system control button on the steering wheel, pull-out boxes, informative dashboard guarantees increased driving safety and allows the driver to feel confident in any situation.

The spaciousness of the cabin and the perfection of the organization of storage systems in these cars make them especially convenient for both long trips and for transporting long loads. When the seats are folded down, the interior of the car can be used as a comfortable sleeping area.

Body-integrated frame

Mitsubishi Pajero developers managed to completely refute the stereotype associated with competitive struggle running characteristics and permeability. The extra-strong body structure, equipped with an integrated space frame, sets unprecedented rigidity parameters and defines impeccable performance.

The manufacturer equipped the car with an innovative independent suspension that provides exceptional flotation at a level of comfort for passengers that is comparable to the comfort provided by premium sedans. Corrosion-resistant steel panels give particular reliability and durability to the structure. The use of aluminum alloy made it possible to minimize the weight of the vehicle

Engine

In order to conquer the most difficult and rugged trails, the Pajero 4 developers have created a line of efficient engines for optimal power performance.

All-wheel drive transmission SUPER SELECT 4WD

Legendary cars The manufacturer equips Mitsubishi Pajero with a unique SUPER SELECT 4WD transmission. It allows you to switch to all-wheel drive mode while driving on slippery surfaces at speeds up to 100 km / h. Blocking of the center differential is carried out when driving off-road, sand, viscous clay in order to increase traction and evenly distribute power to each of the axles. Maximum cross-country ability, overcoming heavily polluted areas and steep slopes are provided through the use of a reduction gear with a double increase in torque in each of the gears.

Locking the rear cross-axle differential is carried out forcibly by using the "RD LOCK" button located on the front panel. In the event of a rear differential lock, automatic shutdown ABS and ASTC systems.

Rear drive 2H

This mode is especially ideal when driving within the city or on the highway. In this mode, power is transferred only to the rear axle, providing a fast and quiet ride and low fuel consumption.

All wheel drive 4H

In this mode, power is distributed to each of the axles, which is characterized by a lack of symmetry (a ratio from 33/67 to 50/50 is achieved). Such a technical solution is the key to perfect grip with the track, exceptional comfort and safety while driving. Using the 4H all-wheel drive is a smart solution for towing trailers and driving in adverse weather and climatic conditions. The manufacturer does not set limits for this mode either in terms of speed or type of coverage.

All-wheel drive mode with locking center differential 4HLc

This mode provides excellent handling by evenly distributing power to each wheel. It is optimally suited for off-road riding and is not recommended for trails with excellent traction.

All-wheel drive mode with reduction gear and blocking of interaxal and interwheel differentials 4LLc

This mode, provided in Mitsubishi Pajero vehicles, allows you to overcome the most difficult obstacles by transmitting maximum torque at extremely low speeds. The mode is not recommended for tracks with good grip.
