Mercedes W220 air suspension repair - what can you do with your own hands? "AIRMATIC STOP, CAR TOO LOW!" - red on the dashboard. Possible reasons

To this day in Russia, air suspension on cargo van still perceived as an attribute of luxury configurations. The stereotype of the high cost of pneumatics scares away those who want to buy it and argue - they say, we don’t need excessive comfort, we can carry loads perfectly on springs. They think about the same when buying buses made from all-metal vans - not originally intended for transporting people. Whether the situation in this area is changing for the better - let's try to figure it out. Air suspension became widespread 30-40 years ago in Europe and the USA. Its main advantage compared to the spring one is its lower weight, cheapness and durability of its consumables, and with it the truck has a better ride. For example, the long life of air springs is determined not only by their own design and the quality of polyamide materials and rubber, but also by the design of the suspension guide vanes. Its kinematics is such that the cylinders work only in compression. The number of layers of cord (usually nylon and kapron) is two to four. The inner rubber layer is not only airtight, but also oil resistant. The outer layer resists the effects of the rays of the sun, ozone, gasoline - neoprene is used for it. Thus, the air balloon consists of several layers of rubberized cord fabric (framework) with an internal sealing and external protective layers. The air suspension has a number of other important advantages over other elastic elements. For example, the adaptability of both the stiffness setting and the permissible axle load. Pneumatics makes it possible to quickly change the level of the floor over a wide range. Among the advantages and controllability - most airbags have a progressive characteristic, that is, the more they are compressed, the higher their rigidity becomes. Thus, the progressive characteristics of the pneumatic elements and the ability to quickly adjust the pressure in them directly from the passenger compartment gives the widest range of performance. With increased requirements for controllability, pneumatic elastic elements can be installed together with shock absorbers adapted to these conditions, as well as with more rigid stabilizers roll stability. The four-point systems (both front and rear axles on air"). With this design, every driver without changing suspension components can achieve that the same car is soft and comfortable, stiff and collected, or something in between. Pneumatics also allows you to more fully use the vehicle's carrying capacity and even allows for light overload without compromising the comfort and safety of the driver and others. This property is relevant for both light and heavy commercial vehicles. In addition, trucks with air suspension crash less pavement, so the main tractors are most often equipped with air springs. For all that, the factory price of a truck with air suspension is higher than cars with leaf springs, but it can also be equipped with an already purchased truck.

Stanislav Bardetsky, General Director of BRABIL LLC (BraBill), St. Petersburg

The primary task for us in the past year was the full quality certification in the GOST system of all imported VB-Airsuspension products based on our foreign certificates. We have carried out tests in scientific institutes of Russia of all our products, and now we can, on absolutely legal grounds, contact vehicle manufacturers. Our main goal is Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen, but we would like such brands as Iveco, Fiat, Citroen and Ford to recommend their dealers to use our services. In the same Germany, when installing full pneumatics on a Sprinter 5 series, it is completely official (with the permission of the manufacturer) that the gross vehicle weight can be increased by 300 kg. This change is not unfounded, but will have a corresponding confirmation in their analogue of the Russian registration certificate. Changes are made not only to the data sheet, but also to the manufacturer's database, and any dealer, upon request, will see a complete set with an increased load capacity. In cargo transportation, this formality may not be so important, but in bus transportation, they fight for every official hundred kilograms, which will allow you to install one more seat or carry another passenger standing up. This is especially true for international travel. As a rule, in addition to people, a minibus carries a hinged trunk with cargo. And, for example, the Finns always weigh such cars. For an overload of 100 kg, you can lose the right to carry out such activities.

Igor Vlasyuk, Development Director of VB-Airsuspension in Russia, St. Petersburg

Now we can say with confidence that the demand for air suspension is growing and the reason here is in passengers who vote in rubles for more comfortable transport. Those minibuses that were converted from all-metal vans (and there are most of them in Russia) are not well suited for transporting passengers, primarily because of the stiff suspension. Its purpose in a truck is to withstand the declared load capacity. Therefore, not everyone wants to drive a hundred kilometers in a bus jumping on every bump. The loss of orders forces carriers to look for solutions, and they come to us asking if it is possible to change the suspension. Pneumatics provides not only comfort, but also safety, as it allows you to solve a whole range of problems of the spring design: reduce the load on the suspension elements (when using auxiliary cylinders), increase the level of comfort and maintain controllability with the maximum load of the vehicle (be it a bus or a van) by keeping the floor level in one position or raising the floor level when passing off-road sections. To properly solve these problems, we provide the client with a full level of services. One of the main components is informing clients (there is a Dutch website, there is a Russian version). We have prepared Russian-language installation instructions for pneumatic systems, as often customers want to do the installation themselves. This is possible in the case of auxiliary pneumatics, more complex designs, of course, are installed only by our specialists, or third-party companies that have been trained by us and received certificates.

What we experience

There are not as many proposals for the conversion of commercial vehicles to pneumatics in Russia as it might seem. As a rule, this type of work is related to companies engaged in, for example, car repair activities. The small number of installed pneumatic kits does not allow them to receive a serious discount from the manufacturer. Therefore, the price of kits with installation makes carriers think about the advisability of purchasing them. Another thing is if the company is an official representative of a European manufacturer that provides a full warranty - both for equipment and for types of work. And installing pendants by the dozen. Today, the St. Petersburg company BRABILL (BraBill), which has a distribution contract with the Dutch VB-Airsuspension B.V., which is a supplier of air suspensions for the conveyors of Daimler AG, IVECO, Ford and others, can boast of such relations. In 2012, the company plans to organize a full-fledged representative office in Russia. In anticipation of its opening, the Kolomna Autocolumn 1417 became interested in Dutch air suspension. To check whether the suspension really meets all the characteristics declared by the manufacturer, on November 10, 2011, it was installed in Kolomna on buses operated both on city (during rush hours) and on suburban routes .

From the history

The company was founded in the Dutch city of Varsseveld in 1993 by Iginio Voorhorst and Eric Bruil. The name is derived from the first letters of the names of the founders. At that time, a company called VB-techniek produced car shock absorbers and additional axles for trucks. When VB-techniek turned 12.5 years old, it was renamed VB-Airsuspension B.V. the lineup- the main product was the air suspension for the best-selling light commercial vehicles in the segment with gross weight from 1.5 to 7.5 tons. In sixteen years of operation, the company has acquired nine European, two Asian and one Russian distributors, and the number of service partners has increased to 45. The staff has grown to 35 engineers and 40 support workers. The company has its own design, engineering, production and installation departments. Since 2009, he has been a supplier of pneumatic components for Daimler AG and Ford Europe. VB-Airsuspension is certified by: ISO 9001-2000, RDW, KBA, AQAP, UTAC, VCA and car manufacturers. VB-Airsuspension B.V. officially recognized by the Dutch Department of Road Transport (Rijksdienstvoorhet Wegverkeer/Department of Road Transport Holland) as a car manufacturer, and has the right to produce vehicles under its own name.

Sander Dusseldorp, Sales Manager VB-Airsuspension B.V., Warseveld, The Netherlands

Russian automotive market Today - one of the most dynamically developing. This fully applies to the increasing demand for our pneumatic systems. The level of sales of VB-Airsuspension products in Russia, especially the dynamics of its growth, allows us to draw unambiguous conclusions about the prospects of this market. In 2012, we plan to open our full-fledged representative office in Russia. We currently have three offices in Europe: in Germany, France and the UK. We believe that the establishment of a representative office in your country will improve the service to our valued customers.

In manual mode

Two Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 515 CDIs were equipped with two main types of air suspension: one Sprinter - auxiliary (semi-pneumatic), the other - fully pneumatic. The first type is a hybrid between the car's standard spring or spring suspension and a pneumatic system installed in addition to the existing elastic elements. Its price is from 32,000 rubles. The function of such a suspension is to remove some load from the standard spring due to an additional pneumatic cylinder. Usually, the installation of auxiliary system cylinders is carried out directly between the leaf spring (at the point of its contact with the rear axle of the car) and directly to the body. This type of suspension allows you to manually increase the height of the body, level the position of the body at maximum load, raise the body to overcome obstacles. Auxiliary suspensions of such types as VB-CoilAir and VB-SemiAir make it possible to independently (within specified limits) adjust the characteristics of the suspension. Both systems are basic and include all the necessary components for installation: pneumatic cylinders, brackets and supports, various connecting materials, protective materials, pneumatic valves, brake force regulators, connectors and, of course, an installation manual. For example, if the elastic element of the spring is supplemented with VB-CoilAir, in such vehicles, the pneumatic cylinder is installed inside the coil spring. The VB-CoilAir system is single chamber, which means that the left and right air cylinders are connected to each other and to one air valve. For vehicles with leaf springs (like the Sprinter) VB-SemiAir is used, in which case the air bellows support the stock springs. The air suspension is divided into two unrelated circuits, each circuit with its own pneumatic boost valve. The basic design can be supplemented with the VB-PCS pressure control system, consisting of a compressor, pressure gauges, safety valves and a control panel. The operation scheme is simple - the control unit is installed in the cab within the reach of the driver. The unit will allow you to change the pressure in the air springs (in both at the same time, or only in one, if the body is not evenly loaded), without leaving the cab. So that the driver does not overdo it, pumping air, and does not lift the chassis too high, a protective valve is provided that stops the compressor at the right time.

Oleg Pesochkin, deputy director for new technology, airline no. 1417, Kolomna

At one of the exhibitions, we drew attention to the VB-Airsuspension air suspension, which can be equipped with our existing minibuses Mercedes Sprinter. One of its advantages was the ease of installation (without any further refinement basic vehicle structure). After a short period of time, it was decided to take into trial operation two sets. The first set consists of two air springs that perform auxiliary functions for the main leaf spring suspension. In addition to reducing the load on the springs, the cylinders must ensure the horizontal position of the body at the maximum load of the bus. This was supposed not only to extend the life of expensive springs, but also to ensure the safety and comfort of passengers during transportation, especially during peak hours. The second, more advanced VB-Airsuspension kit completely replaces the factory spring suspension with air suspension. After installing the kit, calibration is performed, and no matter how loaded the car is, the electronics (by changing the pressure in the cylinders) will maintain the horizontal position of the body. In the first case, the cylinders must be pumped up by the driver, controlling the compressor from the cab. Both sets were installed in one day, and today cars with air suspension have covered 6-7 thousand kilometers. During this time, we received from drivers only positive reviews- driving buses has become easier, while increasing the smoothness of the ride. As stated by the manufacturer, the horizontality of the bus floor is maintained during peak hours.

On the machine

The second, more advanced type of suspension, installed in Kolomna on the Sprinter, is completely pneumatic. It includes models VB-NivoAir, VB-FullAir 2C, VB-FullAir 3C and VB-FullAir 4C, they differ from semi-pneumatic systems in that only air springs perform the function of elastic elements here. These designs are more expensive - from 83,000 rubles. When installing such systems, all regular elastic and damping elements are dismantled. And due to the fully automatic control, the safety of the car is increased, handling, stability and comfort are improved. For fully air suspensions, a new electronic system VB-ASCU has been developed that automatically monitors and corrects the height vehicle. Constant monitoring and adjustment of the body height is carried out regardless of the load, in the longitudinal or transverse direction and regardless of the height of the center of gravity. This system is fully compatible with the anti-lock braking system, stability control system and other control systems and can interact with them. As additional device it is possible to install VB-SDLC (VB-body height controller depending on the speed). The floor leveler lowers the vehicle by 20-40 mm at higher driving speeds, thus improving stability. When driving off-road, the body rises relative to the usual level. This contributes to greater vehicle stability and reduces the risk of mismanagement.

The suspension control unit also includes the function of manually changing the height of the body - this is one of the main standard features of the system. The floor level (higher or lower) can be changed while stopped. It is also possible to lower the vehicle to the lowest possible levels before entering the underground parking. The ECU adapter device will ensure that only the amount of air that is needed to lower the vehicle is released. That is, when the chassis touches the buffer, the ECU adapter stops the air release. The remaining pressure in the air bellows contributes to a faster lifting of the vehicle. Assembly and adjustment (including full pneumatics) VB-Airsuspension is carried out in a few hours, without resorting to complex technological processes and without the use of special tools. Cutting and welding of load-bearing structures, which weaken the strength of the chassis, are not required. The pneumatic system consists of brackets, Panhard rod (transverse torque rod), shock absorbers, pneumatic components (air cylinders, pistons, compressors, air dryers, air ducts and a valve block) that react to the load. The list of equipment also includes electronic components (height sensors, the electronic unit controls, switches and wires dashboard). All metal components are coated with a corrosion inhibitor. Upon installation, the customer will receive a set of documents (detailed manual, warranty forms and instructions for the vehicle) necessary for operation. During operation - in order to avoid unscheduled visits to repair shops, electronic systems air suspensions need to be serviced only every 100 thousand kilometers. In addition, most air suspension components do not require attention and are guaranteed for 2 years or 150 thousand kilometers.

For every car enthusiast, it is very important not only to keep your car safe and sound, but also to improve it every day. There are more than enough lovers in our country! To do this, people buy their own garages, a huge number of different tools and spend a lot of time. And rightly so, because, as you know, it’s better to do everything yourself well than to trust a stranger and get something dubious.

You can improve a car in several cases:

  • Cleaning the internal system and interior. This will provide the car with easy operation and good looks.
  • Install air filter zero resistance. This will make the job easier internal engine reduce the risk of sudden breakdown.
  • Change tires and wheels. The stability of the wheels on the road will improve, and with balanced alloy wheels even the handling of the car.
  • Clean exhaust manifold. This will facilitate throughput, such a refinement is very budgetary.
  • Replace some parts of the brake system. This will keep your family safer and give you more confidence on the road.
  • Replacing the suspension of a passenger car with pneumatic

    There is another small point that will help you improve your car - improve or even change the suspension to air. This will help to completely change the comfort and handling of the car. But what if there are no funds for this, and there is only the opportunity to collect it yourself? How to properly install air suspension passenger car their with my own hands? The answer is to figure it out and make it by hand.

    First, it is necessary to acquire all the constituent elements of this system. You need a compressor, air bags, connecting pipes, control units, pressure gauges, valves and cylinders for air injection. All this can be bought inexpensively in mechanical and electrical stores, it will not be difficult to find this if the model of your car is widely known and widespread in Russia. If buying everything separately is not an option, then you can buy a complete set of equipment, but you will have to spend about 30 thousand rubles.

    Now briefly about how to replace such a thing as air suspension. First of all, it is necessary to disassemble the front suspension, but leave the original support strut housing. Next, we bore the body to the required size of the pneumatic cylinder. We replace the shock absorbers with air bags. This part of the work is the most difficult and accurate, because it requires care and caution. After the above procedures, we lay the tubes connected to the cylinders and the receiver from the back. It is convenient to install the receiver in the trunk, place and strengthen the pressure gauges there.

    Car air suspension pressure

    The pressure must be distributed correctly. Due to the workload of the front, we set 8 atmospheres on the front wheels, and 6 on the rear wheels. We will have to make the structure heavier, but add a compressor. The last stage is the easiest - you just need to add an electrician: wiring, fuses, switches. Their location should be harmonious and unique for each car.

    Air suspension for a car is a suspension with which body height can be adjusted relative to the road, change the clearance for off-road trips.

    What is air suspension?

    Air suspension is used for trucks and various trailers. This suspension is also used on business class cars. It can be the basis of already existing similar pendants.

    Our readers appreciate it, now the choice is yours: OSCAR 2017 - Car Rating. Which car will win the 2017 Oscars from UAP?

    The main purpose of this device is ensuring higher road safety and comfort when moving. Some business class vehicles are equipped with pneumatic elements at the heart of the adaptive suspension.

    Air suspension can be divided into three main types. This is single-circuit suspension, double-circuit and four-circuit. The air suspension is often included in the ready-made equipment of the car, and can also be installed independently. If you install the suspension yourself, you will be able to manually adjust the height of the body. What is the difference between all three types:

    1. Single-circuit suspension is designed for one axis car (rear or front). Single-circuit suspension is often installed on trucks, where the emphasis is on adjusting the rear axle of the car, depending on the load on the body.

    2. Double-circuit air suspension can be installed on two axles and one. This allows two axes to be adjusted. But if you put the dual-circuit suspension on only one axle, then you can independently adjust each wheel.

    3. Four-circuit air suspension is a complex system. In this mode All four wheels can be adjusted, a backup system is implemented. Such a pneumatic system is controlled using. Support pressure regulation is carried out with the assistance of special sensors.

    The basis of the air suspension design consists of a control unit, special sensors, an air compressor, a receiver, pneumatic elements for each wheel and a control unit. At automatic operation pendants, body height is adjustable depending on the speed, inclination etc. The operation of automatic and manual adjustment is slightly different. But in general, the principle and purpose has the same meaning.

    On what machines does it come from the factory?

    It is interesting to know that one of the first cars to be equipped with air suspension was Citroen DS in 1955. And imagine, in the very first days, this car model received a huge number of applications, a third of which was made literally within the first hour.

    serial production Citroen car The DS was the first to include an air suspension. Today, also, the production of cars of this brand with such a complete set continues, as well as cars such as Toyota, Mercedes, etc. It is better to use air suspension in conjunction with standard suspension. It will, as it were, take on part of the load, working as an auxiliary element.

    In order to be able to adjust the height of the body relative to the road lane, you can install an air suspension and use it together with the standard suspension. Cars that are designed to transport various goods, with large bodies and medium-sized trailers, available with integrated pneumatic system. For example, such as Mercedes, Renault Master, etc. Also, various models of dump trucks, large trucks for transporting large loads. In these types of vehicles, a pneumatic system is mandatory. It facilitates the movement of the car and makes the ride easier and more comfortable.

    On what machines can you install yourself?

    How to make an air suspension yourself and on what models of cars can you install it? In practice, manufacturing is not particularly difficult. Contrary to popular belief about the unreliability of such an installation, this process is quite effective and realistically feasible.

    Can be designed and installed by yourself air suspension for VAZ. Some important points should be taken into account. The most difficult moment in the manufacture of a suspension for a VAZ is the replacement of shock absorbers with pneumatic cushions. It is better to use the original body of the racks for support. It is necessary to take into account the features of a particular VAZ model and the type of pneumatic cylinders used.

    For construction air suspension a VAZ car will require a set of certain parts and mechanisms. No worries. There are no difficulties in this process.

    What is needed for this:

    1. Compressor.

    2. A set of 4 air bags. When selecting pillows, specific models can be used specifically for the VAZ, and there may also be others suitable from other car models.

    3. Receiver for air injection. It must be cylindrical for a VAZ sedan. For hatchbacks, the receiver is in the form of a spare tire.

    4. You will need 4 pcs. solenoid valves.

    5. Connecting tubes.

    6. Two pressure gauges.

    Directly during the manufacturing process, you may need to buy other related parts, wires, fasteners, etc. Approximate the cost of all elements in general will be from 800 to 1200 dollars. It depends on the individual parameters of the design and model of the car.

    Advantages and disadvantages

    Like any device, air suspension also has disadvantages and advantages. One of the advantages of having a pneumatic system is the absence of noise and the smoothness of the car. A big plus is automatic clearance adjustment and stiffness of the racks in the process of movement. These qualities are inherent in factory installation systems. Regarding the four-circuit pneumatic system - manual installation, with such a model with automatic control it is not used at all. Because it is a very complex and costly process for self-fulfillment.

    The disadvantage is low chance of successful repair. For example, pneumatic racks, failing, already beyond repair. Just need to replace parts.

    The cost of the kit and the installation itself

    If we talk about the cost of the pneumatic system, then it is different. Depends on the type (single-circuit, double-circuit, four-circuit). And also the price depends on the manufacturer and supplier. In the price range in Ukraine the cost of pneumatic elements and kits can be from 4,000 to 25,000 UAH. Again, it depends on the type of model.

    Installation cost depends on your needs. On average, it can be from 2500 to 10 000 UAH. It depends on your goals and individual wishes. Before proceeding with the installation, you need to clearly and in detail explain to the master all the nuances. Because every revision is additional price. It is far from always necessary to buy all the parts to assemble the kit. For this, it is advisable to seek the advice of a specialist in this field. After that already sum up the entire cost of installation and related items workflow.

    The possibilities for customizing your car are almost endless. From external to cardinal technical changes. One of the biggest changes could be an air suspension that will make people pay attention to your car. This device has many advantages:

    • the car becomes more dynamic;
    • increases stability;
    • air suspension unloads the suspension, thereby increasing its resource;
    • the car will be more comfortable.

    The main disadvantage is the price. Installing an air suspension in a tuning studio will cost a tidy sum. It is this factor that discourages the majority of motorists from adding this tuning element. But if you have the desire and opportunity, then do-it-yourself air suspension is not as difficult as it might seem.

    Where to start of course with the collection of the necessary components. The air suspension is a rather rare tuning element, so it is difficult to find it assembled.

    Accessories

    Air suspension pillows are what you will have to spend the most money on, in fact, the pillow replaces the spring and shock absorber, as for the choice, it all depends on your car. At the moment, there is a wide choice on the market, you will definitely be able to choose the right part for yourself.

    Installation

    The installation process on modern cars is very similar.

    It all starts with the removal of the native rack. For this

    1. Unscrew the nut on the steering tip and pull it out of the rack.
    2. Unscrew the nuts securing the strut to the steering knuckle and securing the upper support.
    3. Remove the brake hose.

    In the future, from the old rack, you will need a travel limiter for the upper support and a support with a bearing. Further events can develop in two ways.

    The finished air suspension is installed in the reverse order. Screw the top support of the rack to knuckle, reinstall the steering knuckle and brake hose. Next, you deal with the hoses (it all depends on the device of the car, there is nothing complicated in principle) and install the valves. Install electronics (toggle switches, start buttons and wires) and connect everything.

    Health check

    The ideal test should take place indoors. Fill the system with air (8 atm is enough) close the garage and listen carefully so as not to miss possible air leaks. If the first step was successful, check all connections with soapy water. This is followed by a final check for lifting and lowering the car. That's all, do-it-yourself air suspension is installed. So, following the instructions, you can individualize your car, please yourself and surprise others.

    There will be no comparisons of bagels and sleeves in the topic. High-quality Pindos air bags will not be mentioned.

    Only availability, simplicity, cheapness.

    So, we will talk about Scania cabin cushions.

    Ready-made cabin cushions are, of course, great and wonderful. Finished with a file - installed. What could be easier.

    But what if the pillow cannot be installed in this form, if other characteristics are needed, a smaller stroke?

    One of the most common problems when installing air suspension on a VAZ PP is the location of the lower bracket of the rear cushion. If you put it on a spring cup, then the plastic part of the bracket will be higher than the body of the rack, and when the suspension breaks down, there will be a blow to this same plastic bracket. In addition, he will not let the car go down.
    Well, we saw off the cup, grind the retaining ring and weld it 5-7 cm below the spring cup. The problem with the protruding bracket is solved, but another problem appears.

    The spring cup is at the level of the rubber profile, and lowering the lower point of the pillow below, we set the bracket just opposite the wheel - accordingly, there is a chance to wipe the pillow, especially when installing wheels of a larger width and diameter.
    The solution to the problem has several options: installing bagels, moving the mount back up, installing spacers on the wheels, shortening the pillow with installing other braces.

    Another equally common problem is the discrepancy between the inner diameter of the pillow and the diameter of the A-pillar housing. The same problem can be attributed to the inability to put on the pillow through the outer nut or protrusion on the rack.

    This problem is also solved in different ways.

    Someone sharpens plastic:

    Someone grinds special cases:

    Well, one more option:

    All of these options provide for the installation of only a full-length sleeve.

    But what if you really want short walkers or need to reduce the length of the sleeve?
    This issue cannot be resolved without solving the problem of sealing the sleeve.

    In the factory version, the sleeve is crimped with a special ring. The ring has certain strength characteristics and resistance to corrosion, in addition, a special machine is needed to compress this ring (similar to those that compress high pressure hoses). All this makes the method of crimping almost impossible to do at home.

    But there is one relatively simple way to shorten Scanian pillows.
    Quote: " The process of shortening the same Scanian cushion is as follows. The gum is cut with a knife along the edge of the metal ring. The metal ring slips out with little effort without an elastic band. We shorten the elastic band of the pillow to the required length. We put the same metal ring on the pillow and press it into place like an oil seal using a machine tool or a press and soapy water. On Scanian pillows, it is better to shorten the pillows from above, because they have a metal upper support.
    In this way, the pillows in this photo are shortened. Although the other rings are carved for the convenience of folding the pillow. Rings can be sharpened new, but the dimensions must be taken from the originals.
    "

    Knowing the general principle, you can order the necessary components for the turner:

    It is not very convenient to look for a press each time to assemble and disassemble. Therefore, it is possible to seal using bolted cones:

    There is another way. This method is based on the principle of connecting the union nut for CAMMOZI plastic pipes.

    This device has been used in the automotive industry for about 60 years. Initially, it was installed only on trucks and semi-trailers. But progress does not stand still, so air suspension is now being installed on cars. True, not all. But what about someone who wants to drive in comfort, but has not yet saved up money for a business class car? The answer is simple: install the air suspension yourself. We'll talk about how to do this today.

    What is air suspension

    In short, air suspension is a device in which there are no spring shock absorbers. The driver can adjust the parameters of this device at his discretion, and this can be done on the go. When installing the air suspension, standard springs, springs and torsion bars are replaced with reinforced rubber air cushions. The elastic element in air bags is air injected by a special system, which includes the following parts:

    1. Compressor.
    2. Valve distribution system.
    3. control block.
    4. Receiver.

    According to the method of control, air suspensions are manual and automatic.

    • in manual suspensions, the car owner independently sets the value ground clearance(usually such devices are supplemented with pneumatic suspension struts, so that the driver can manually set not only the clearance, but also the stiffness of the suspension);
    • in automatic suspension, the electronic control unit itself will select the amount of ground clearance, based on parameters such as speed, weight, body roll, etc. If adaptability automatic system very high, then under certain conditions it can seriously lower the center of gravity of the car and greatly improve handling, especially when cornering;

    By design, air suspensions are divided into:

    • single-circuit. In them, air bags with the same pressure are installed on one of the axles;
    • double-circuit. Here, the pillows are also installed on the same axis, but the pressure in them may be different;
    • four-circuit. They are considered the best (and most expensive) because these suspensions use microcomputers, pressure sensors and a system of four separate valves, one for each wheel;

    The most popular place to install a receiver and compressor in passenger car- the trunk, or rather, the spare wheel niche. Of course, the spare wheel will either have to be moved to another place, or completely removed, compensating for its absence with tire sealant.

    Is air suspension worth it?

    In short: yes.

    Now let's take a closer look.

    What determines a comfortable ride without shaking and strong rocking of the car? Two parameters are important here: the mass of the car and the stiffness of the springs of the shock absorbers. If the car is light and the springs are stiff, the driver is guaranteed to shake. If the car is heavy, and the springs are soft, the rolling is ensured, as in the sea. This problem is aggravated by the fact that it is impossible in principle to bring the spring stiffness and the mass of the car into line, since the mass is constantly changing, because there are a different number of passengers in the car, it can carry additional cargo, etc.

    It is also impossible to change the stiffness of the spring shock absorbers. And moreover, it falls over time (due to metal fatigue), and along with stiffness, the vehicle's ground clearance also decreases.

    To regulate the stiffness of the shock absorbers, an air suspension was created, the elements of which are able to adapt to the constantly changing parameters of the car, providing the driver with a comfortable ride in any conditions. Here are its advantages:

    • the clearance of the car and the rigidity of its racks are automatically adjusted;
    • the machine becomes more resistant to overloads: in case of heavy workload, the rigidity of the racks rises to the maximum, which avoids damage to other suspension parts;
    • improved handling: driving becomes smoother, car roll on bends is minimal;
    • when using a four-circuit automatic suspension, the longitudinal roll of the car also tends to a minimum, which makes the ride even more comfortable;

    This device also has disadvantages:

    • pneumatic shock absorbers are not repairable. In case of failure, they can only be replaced;
    • airbag rubber is sensitive to cold and pollution (more on this will be discussed below);

    Here we should also mention hydraulic suspensions. They perform the same function as pneumatic ones, but their elastic element is a special fluid. And the main difference between hydraulic suspensions is their increased reliability (and a very high price, which is unlikely to be affordable for an ordinary motorist). For example: the air suspension resource is on average 200 thousand km, while the hydraulic suspension can easily travel up to 400 thousand km.

    From all of the above, a simple conclusion follows: air suspension is a good alternative to both stock springs and hydraulics with its exorbitant price.

    Air suspension installation process

    Before starting the installation of the air suspension, it is necessary to determine what we need for work.

    Tools and materials

    The sequence of actions when installing air suspension

    • the trunk of the car opens, the spare wheel is removed from the niche;
    • on the side walls of the trunk are plastic plugs that hold the mat. They pry with a flat screwdriver and remove;
    • after that, the carpet itself is removed. Provides access to the nuts of the racks and to the holes that will be required for wiring;
    • the compressor is connected to the control unit and the receiver as indicated in the instructions. After that, the assembled structure is installed in the spare wheel niche;
    • further wiring is connected to the receiver and compressor. Connection is carried out in strict accordance with the instructions on the wire labels;
    • the connected wires are assembled into one bundle, which is led into the passenger compartment through a hole located under one of the rear seats;
    • then the tourniquet is laid along one of the walls of the cabin, under the rugs and displayed in engine compartment;
    • there the wires are connected to the battery, ground and to the fuse box as indicated in the instruction manual for the air suspension control unit;
    • now one of rear wheels it is jacked up, after which, using a 22 open-end wrench, 4 lower fixing nuts on the rear pillar are unscrewed;
    • using a 24 socket, the upper mounting nut of the rear pillar is unscrewed through the hole in the trunk;
    • after unscrewing the top nut, the rack is removed. A similar operation is carried out with the second rear rack. In place of the removed racks, pneumatic racks from the air suspension kit are installed;
    • to remove the front struts on each of them with an open-end wrench for 22, 4 fixing nuts are unscrewed;
    • then disconnect and remove the hoses brake system, manually disconnect the plug ABS sensor(if there is one in the car);
    • the front struts are removed, the struts from the kit are installed in their place and securely screwed;
    • pneumatic lines are connected to the compressor, receiver and control unit in accordance with the instructions, after which the hoses are removed through the hole in the trunk;
    • the resulting air line is output to the engine compartment and connected;

    Air suspension control

    Any high-quality air suspension is supplied with a controller that is installed in the cabin. On its display, the driver can see both the pressure in the air bags and in the receiver. The car owner can choose the units of pressure measurement at his discretion. The control units of high-quality four-circuit suspensions allow drivers to choose from several preset modes with a certain clearance (in particular, the Air-Lift air suspension, which was discussed above, has 8 such modes). The driver can select the desired mode with just one click of a button.

    Moreover, over time, the driver will not need to click buttons at all, since the system will gradually “learn” the car, “get used” to the conditions of its operation, to the driving style of the car owner, and will itself keep optimum pressure in airbags.

    The air suspension is switched off from the same controller. When deactivated, the system sets the average ride height, after which the airbags begin to work like conventional spring shock absorbers.

    Pneumatic shock absorbers are the main advantage of air suspension. But they are theirs weak point. This moment is especially clearly manifested when the machine is operated in conditions close to extreme.

    Air shock absorbers have 2 enemies: sand and cold.

    Self-installation of air suspension is a task for advanced motorists who know exactly what they are doing. A novice who got behind the wheel just yesterday is clearly not capable of such a task. But experienced motorists also make mistakes. The most common is homemade products created on pillows ordered via the Internet from China. The quality of rubber in such “products”, as a rule, leaves much to be desired. And about what problems with management can lead to, it has already been written above.

    The task is standard. Increase comfort and protect expensive front leaf springs from breaking. The car already has a progressive standard rear axle air suspension. Air generation by a standard pneumatic system, to which the front axle air suspension control was connected.

    Due to the fact that the car is quite heavy, and the transported cargo exceeds the nominal value of 7 tons, it was decided to install air bags 400190 with an internal buffer. The kit has already worked for more than 15t.km and is currently launched in mass production. The client is satisfied with the operation of the equipment.

During the installation of the axle set, the deformation of the spars in the area of the standard sampler was found. Consequences of repeated blows. The problem was solved in the usual way. We installed an axle kit and powered it with a compact and reliable 2-loop control system. Now breakdown rear suspension does not threaten. As well as reducing the buildup. The system compressor is installed in the niche of the front passenger seat. Management on inside on the panel.
    Equipment installation time - 9 hours (time of spars straightening is taken into account).
    The equipment is always available in the central warehouse of the Air Ryde manufacturing company. Get detailed advice on ordering from our specialists by phone toll-free hotline 8-800-333-25-74 (toll-free within Russia). Or request a call back from the site.

    Installing the air suspension on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Classic

    This car quite often resorts to additional tuning with suspension. Many owners wonder how to increase payload? In this example, with photographs, we will show how you can maintain the standard body height when fully loaded or when overloaded. Manufacturer Mercedes initially does not sell versions Sprinter Classic with air suspension. But we found a solution: additional air suspension for Mercedes Sprinter Classic. The main advantage of this air suspension that the native spring package remains in place. Pneumocylinders they do not allow the car to sag when fully loaded, so the springs remain in their normal position (as if without a load) and work in the correct range. Without air suspension over time, the springs sag in every commercial vehicle and you have to change the leaf springs (depending on the daily load of the car). With additional air suspension from the company Pneumoballoons.ru Fatigue of the springs can be minimized and keep the factory springs for decades.

    Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Classic

    The official carrying capacity of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Classic is 960 kg. Due to the large cargo compartment, users are trying to load the Classic with an overload of up to 3-4 tons. Only an additional air suspension will not allow the springs to bend in the opposite direction.

    This car was fitted with this Airride 241030 air suspension kit: Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Classic:

    The pressure in this kit can be adjusted using a simple automotive nipple. Each time, if necessary, the driver connects the compressor and pumps air into the system. To control the pressure from the instrument panel without leaving the car, we recommend installing one of the control systems. In this project, a two-circuit control system with a receiver was implemented:

    Kit installation rear air suspension took about 5 hours. Each axle air suspension kit comes with instructions, so you can install air suspension on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Classic.

    Air suspension kits come with all the necessary components and accessories. The control system is installed in a hidden niche from prying eyes. The receiver control system gives you the additional ability to set options such as air priming and air horn (the loudest event your car can produce).

    The pressure gauge and control buttons were installed on the dashboard. The pressure in the pillows can be raised / lowered even when the car is not running.

    air suspension

    I put myself additional air springs American Firestone as I was told #1 in the world. I've driven about 20,000 miles on them so far. The most positive impression. I have 515, they put them instead of chippers. No drilling in the frame. What are the sensations from the pillows: 1) There is no lateral buildup, even with a strong wind (I have an awning of almost 29 cubes and tires 225) 2) Confident entry into turns loaded. headlights) 4) Previously, I tried not to load a heavy load on the back, now I am loading it.
    When I load 3 tons, I pump up the suspension so that the springs are straight or slightly loaded, there is a load on the frame by 3 points before it was 2 points. It seems to me that the air suspension should save the shock absorbers. There are no squeaks. Time will tell how she will behave in the winter, those who installed said that everything would be fine. The warranty was given for 2 years. A lot of them were installed in Moscow, but for some reason no one wants to make a review. After 3 months, I decided to unsubscribe a little. Pleasure is not cheap. For everything I gave 60,000 rubles. They took 12,000 rubles for the work (half a day of work, even less). For other Sprinter models, the suspension is cheaper. Ford Transit was made nearby, they also have a cheaper suspension.
    Who installed said that in the event of a failure of the pillow after the guarantee, it or they cost no more than 6,000 rubles.
    At least the pillows do not allow my native springs to sag. Without pillows, sooner or later, the springs will still need to be changed. They also don't come cheap with work.

    Before that, there was a topic viewtopic.php?f=4&t=839 , but to make it easier for interested people to find it, I created a new topic.

    Re: air suspension

    The most common mode - when I bleed empty air, I leave 0.5 atm. When loaded, I inflate depending on the weight of the load, I am guided by the springs, I try to keep the springs straight or slightly loaded. The pressure should be no more than 6 atm. And this is for our sprinter a load weighing somewhere around 3.5-4 tons.
