Roskachestvo, on behalf of the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the State Commission for Combating Illicit Circulation of Industrial Products, conducted a quality check of automotive aluminum rims with a diameter of 16 inches. The study included copies of the 23 most common brands under whose brands non-original wheels are produced in Russia, China, Italy, Germany, and Taiwan.
RUSSIAN QUALITY SYSTEM STANDARD
The standard of the Russian quality system for wheels made of aluminum alloys establishes an increase in the requirements for the physical properties of the metal from which the wheels are made: yield strength, relative elongation and Brinell hardness. These tests are needed to predict how the alloys from which the rims are made are prone to deformation during operation. In addition, corrosion resistance was evaluated.
How was the security tested?
The main tests of automobile rims concerned their safety. They simulated the daily operation of a car - impact test, rolling test and torsional bending test. Wheels that fail at least one of these tests can pose a real threat on the road, as a negative result is the destruction of the wheel.
Impact test
The impact test tests the impact strength of the material and the application of these qualities of the alloy in the design of the disc. In this case, a wheel impact on an obstacle, curb or pit on the road surface is simulated.
The wheel fails the test if one of the following occurs:
- visible rudimentary crack in the area of the wheel disk assembly;
- the central element is separated from the rim;
- complete loss of internal pressure within one minute.
The test result is considered satisfactory if there are no visible cracks on the surface of the rim and if no reduction in air pressure in the tire is noted within one minute after completion of the test. Cracks and dents caused by direct contact with a dropped load are acceptable. In the case of rims with removable rims or other elements that can be removed if threaded connections adjacent to the spoke or vents fail the test, the wheel is considered to have failed the test.
Rolling test
The rolling test simulates the load on the vehicle when passing a certain distance (about 1800 kilometers) at speeds up to 80 km/h. In this test rim with a tire installed on it, it is pressed against a rotating drum with a clearly calculated load, thereby simulating rolling along pavement. This experience shows how the wheel behaves under normal and critical conditions. The result of the test can be called positive if the rolling did not lead to a break or the slightest cracks in the disk.
Torsional bending
The torsional bending test simulates the maximum load in a car turn and must withstand a certain number of cycles (1,800,000).
To calculate the maximum load, the maximum foreseeable loads under the worst operating conditions and the most important technical factors such as vehicle weight at maximum load, tire type and size, ET and PCD wheels are taken into account.
The result of the test can be called positive if the full cycle of rotations did not lead to a break or the slightest cracks in the material of the rim.
Who failed the test
Six brands of aluminum rims failed the impact test. This suggests that when hitting an obstacle, cars on these discs can cause an accident. Such discs are considered unsafe.
- X-Race brand wheel, produced in China and imported to Russia by the Yarshintorg company, could not withstand a blow to the valve; its central part has separated from the wheel rim - this is a serious violation, the product is unsafe.
- PROMA trademark wheel, produced in Russia at Fest LLC, could not withstand a blow to the spoke. After the test, cracks were found in the connection between the spoke and the rim - this is a serious violation, the product is unsafe.
- 4GO brand wheel , made in China and imported to Russia by the Russian Aluminum Disks company could not withstand a blow to the valve. He had cracks in the connection of the spokes with the rim and the tightness was broken - this is a serious violation, the product is unsafe.
- Replay brand wheel, made in China failed both impact tests. A blow to the valve cracked the spokes in connection with the central part. And a blow to the spoke (on another sample) tore the center of the wheel off the rim, which led to an instant loss of pressure in the tire - this is a serious violation, the product is unsafe.
- Wheel brand "MEGALYUM", manufactured in Russia by the company of the same name, failed both impact tests. A blow to the valve tore the spokes from the center element, and a blow to the spoke (on a new sample) separated the center element from the rim - this is a serious violation, the product is unsafe.
Also, the wheel of the MEGALUM trademark did not pass any test of the physical properties of the metal from which it is made. The tensile strength, yield strength and relative elongation of the wheel do not meet the advanced standards of Roskachestvo. - Alcasta brand wheel, made in China failed the impact test. A blow to the spoke caused the central element to separate from the rim - this is a serious violation, the product is unsafe.
Important point:
None of the brands of aluminum rims that did not pass the safety tests met the leading elongation standard of Roskachestvo during the study. This suggests that the wheels can be deformed during operation, which is another confirmation of the poor quality of these products.
Who violated, but not seriously
Alcasta aluminum wheels have labeling violations - this is one of the most common violations among all product categories investigated by Roskachestvo. In particular, the year of manufacture of the wheel was not indicated on the disks.
It is also worth noting that when purchasing aluminum wheels through the store/manufacturer's website or when communicating with managers, as well as when receiving a wheel directly, not all brands accompanied their products with complete information. According to Technical regulations Customs Union, wheels must be marked with data on the name or trademark, configuration designation, rim size designation, wheel offset, date of manufacture. However, when buying some wheels, it was impossible to find out their weight, country of origin, and some did not have a bar code. This is not a violation, but it makes it difficult to identify products if the buyer has clear preferences.
Who passed all the trials
Six brands were recognized as premium products in the aluminum rims study – two Russian production and four Chinese. Their products passed all safety tests, the qualitative physical properties prescribed in the advanced Roskachestvo standard were confirmed, they were all right with the labeling.

"Casting" and "forging"
Wait, why exactly? alloy wheels? In general, let's first understand the definitions. Stamped - in other words, steel, in many cases (in mine too) these are unprepossessing discs of the first complete set for inexpensive cars. Many are embarrassed by their appearance and cover them with plastic caps.
Cast and forged are logically combined into one group called “light alloy wheels”, mentioning that magnesium alloys are generally preferable to aluminum in this field. But then divide it back, since the technologies for their manufacture are different (and, accordingly, the price). Cast is poured into a mold, then machined. Forged, despite the name, do not forge - they use a type of hot stamping. At the same time, forged ones combine some of the advantages of stamped and cast ones. They are stronger than cast ones, which allows them to be made lighter. And, like stamped ones, they are quite elastic - they tend to bend rather than crack. If you are already investing in improving the car or simplifying its maintenance, then it is better, of course, to invest in forged ones. Although this is the most expensive option.
The agony of choice
None of my personal cars have ever had alloy wheels. And problems with the deformation of stampings arose (quite regularly) only on the Tavria in memorable times, but this was generally the Achilles heel of the Ukrainian machine. Problems were treated simply and elegantly - with a hammer. What is easy to bend is easy to unbend. The services of qualified mechanics in those days were not addressed for such trifles. Therefore, it is not at all clear to me at what point and why light alloy wheels suddenly became fashionable and so in demand? Another marketing scam?
Of the entire list of advantages of alloy wheels, I unconditionally accept only high corrosion resistance and aesthetic appearance. A huge selection of "casting" on the shelves (some believe that the wealth of choice is a definite plus) is rather a disadvantage. The eyes are too wide. Only firms with world-famous names (OZ Racing, Momo, Enkei, Dotz, Fondmetal and others) will be typed a dozen or three. But world names are always more expensive than local ones (read budget ones). How to choose from local? What to compare with what? You will not find any complete data. Each manufacturer praises his product. At best, the seller will recommend something. And it will most likely press on world names.
Meanwhile, the sellers themselves warn that in the field alloy wheels full of low-quality counterfeit products masquerading as original products. Sometimes it can be detected by suspicious low prices. But sometimes the price is just right. It turns out that all these are cats in pouches?

What do alloy wheel sellers like to lure? In addition to the beautiful appearance, a beneficial reduction in "unsprung weight" is certainly mentioned. This is a really important design parameter (especially for racing cars and sports cars). You may be told that lightweight wheels will improve the ride and driving dynamics, handling and stability of the car, make life easier for all parts of the suspension and transmission, engine and brakes. And at the same time reduce fuel consumption - because light wheel easier to spin than heavy.
There is an engineering reason for all of this, but all these improvements are so tiny on the scale of a production car that the average driver will not notice the difference at all when switching from stamped to “cast” or vice versa. Neither dynamics, nor fuel consumption, nor handling.
Forged wheels usually have only two drawbacks: very expensive and much less designer variety than cast ones. And they often forget about the third one: the disk is too strong. There is some risk that, with a strong blow, it will not absorb some of the energy, as stamped (bent) or cast (cracked) will do, but will lovingly transfer all of it to the suspension, steering mechanism and drive shafts. At least that's how it is in theory.
The main disadvantage of alloy wheels is widely known and understandable: low maintainability. With an unfortunate set of circumstances, an alloy wheel can collapse to death. In those cases where repair is possible, its cost may not be far from the cost of a new disk. It is not always possible to find another exactly the same new disc in the store to replace the one killed (the assortment is updated very quickly), and many generally sell alloy wheels not by the piece, but only in sets.
We add that snow porridge or mud (when driving in thick mud) like to get into the aesthetic cutouts of light alloy wheels, after which they harden. Wheel experts complain that the caked-on dirt is difficult to remove and its residue disturbs the balance of the wheel. In short, alloy wheels are only good for quality roads.
I often drive on classic Russian roads and I don't like those perspectives. And here's what I think: if you really buy another set of discs, then let them be normal steel stamped ones.
