Design

The SUV is based on the Fiesta B2E hatchback platform. The EcoSport architecture is identical to the Fiesta, with a McPherson at the front and a torsion beam at the rear along with drums. brake mechanisms. This design is quite reliable and allows the car not to give in to various obstacles that may be encountered on the way. Adaptation to Russian conditions

In order to adapt EcoSport for the road realities of our country, they decided to “warm” it. An electric heater and additional air ducts for the legs of the rear passengers were installed in the cabin, and the windshield was equipped with a heating function. In addition, the roof was galvanized, the suspension received reinforced shock absorbers and springs, and the base engine was switched to AI-92 gasoline. Apart from windshield heated front seats, steering wheel and exterior mirrors with electric drive. The Russian version also has an enlarged washer reservoir and additional noise insulation, although the noise level in the car is still not small, especially at speeds over 100 km / h.

Comfort

Some may like the EcoSport interior, some may not, but one thing is for sure - everything is in order with the finish. Plastic pleases with softness in the right places, the “tidy” is informative and easy to read, and the steering column has the function of adjusting the height and angle of inclination. The top-end version of Titanium relies on high-quality leather trim. The steering wheel - with not very large, but comfortable tides and audio equipment control buttons. Due to the lowered armrest, you have to turn the hand on the handbrake, and the proprietary Sync multimedia system, available in higher trim levels, is equipped with an exclusively monochrome display and too many buttons - at first it will not be easy to figure it out.


In the "base" neither "multimedia" nor climate control is foreseen - it includes the usual audio preparation with 6 speakers and air conditioning, but there are power windows and much more. Ceiling handles are not included in any package, and only the electric window at the driver's seat works in automatic mode. The seats are located quite high, there are no complaints about the range of adjustment. After several hours of driving, there is no particular fatigue. The lateral support rollers are developed, but still stand far from each other. The back of the rear seats deviates for the sake of a comfortable fit for the rear passengers, but this, alas, reduces the volume of the already not very spacious luggage compartment - it fits only from 310 to 1238 liters. cargo (with the rear sofa folded).


The equipment includes as many as 7 airbags, including a knee airbag for the driver. Thanks to the modernized sensors, their fast and guaranteed operation is ensured. Nevertheless, it should be borne in mind that the real “appetite” of the EcoSport, judging by the numerous reviews of car owners, is slightly higher than that declared by the manufacturer.

Ford wants to beat two rivals with one crossover: EcoSport should fly both the utilitarian Duster and the bright Nissan Juke take the buyer away from under the air duct. But for a war on two fronts, a lot of strength is required - and after all, under the hood of even the most powerful version of the crossover, there are not so many horsepower ...

Autumn landscapes on the Georgian Military Highway on the way from Tbilisi to Vladikavkaz fascinate and enchant: the asphalt tape either snakes around the mountain passes, then suddenly jumps out into the valley and rushes to the horizon exactly between the huge mountain ranges keeping wise silence. The perfect place to reflect on the eternal, but not this time: the new EcoSport knocks the mood.

Against the backdrop of these stately mountains and the restrained tones of the late Caucasian autumn, the unusual bright orange EcoSport looks alien - like a capoeira dancer at a lezginka competition: all of himself is so carnival-off-road, cubist, with a huge opening of the grille in the front bumper, narrowly squinted and pulled up on the very edge of the "muzzle" with eyes-headlights, a spare tire placed on the trunk lid. Collect EcoSport in Russia, at a plant in Naberezhnye Chelny. The degree of localization is quite high: Ford said that a number of parts are stamped here. With the new EcoSport, everything is different: he will try to keep old customers and grab young people. According to marketers, the crossover is both another car for middle-aged people (moreover, Ford representatives for some reason are sure that many will switch to EcoSport with Focus), and the first own car for urban youth. The first group will obviously consider Duster or Terrano as an alternative (although this couple is noticeably cheaper), the second will not mind testing the Nissan Juke and Opel Mokka. And Ecosport, it turns out, owes both ours and yours?

It turns out. Vivid proof of this price policy and equipment. In terms of price, Ecosport is located approximately in the middle of Duster and Juke, and a kind of moment of truth for the buyer comes if he counted up to 899,000 rubles before the money in the stash ran out. For this money, you can buy one of two versions of the Ecosport to choose from. The first - with a less powerful engine and front-wheel drive, but with robotic box and top-of-the-line. The second is all-wheel drive with a more powerful engine, but on the “handle” and in the middle of the three Trend Plus configurations. Here it’s already for everyone according to their needs: for sure, urban youth will prefer a comfortable transmission and a leather interior (leather is available only in the top configuration), and supporters of the engine are more powerful, all-wheel drive and simple and reliable mechanics will be ready to put up with a rag interior and a limited list of equipment.

The origin of Ecosport is Latin American, but it was prepared for the Russian winter: it arrived in Russia with a winter package that includes an additional electric interior heater, air ducts at the feet of the rear passengers, electrically heated windshield, front seats and side mirrors.

But the problem is that it is impossible to create a universal solution and keep the price at an acceptable level, whatever one may say: traces of forced savings are noticeable. You can, for example, forgive such a trifle as the total absence of ceiling handles. Or turn a blind eye to the fact that EcoSport does not know how to park on its own or emergency brake (Focus does this - and it costs about the same). But the fact that the factory bottom protection is not provided for the crossover is already embarrassing. The thought of the defenseless belly of the "Ecosport" came to mind more than once during the hauls on light off-road and when crossing fords.

And if you want a two-liter EcoSport, but with a robotic box? Or, for example, a less powerful engine in the "top" and with all-wheel drive? Sorry, pass by: Ecosport has neither one nor the other - they say there will be no demand for such versions. For the same reason in motor range there will be no diesel engine.

And the two available units - the old aspirated Sigma and Duratec (with a volume of 1.6 and 2 liters, power - 122 and 140 hp, respectively) - few people will be pleased. Powershift made friends with the "youngest" perfectly - the shifts are smooth, without unnecessary jerks. The only thing I didn’t like was the manual mode control button - it was not placed in the most obvious way on the side of the gearshift handle itself. And after all for the help to this button it was necessary to address often.

A full-fledged color monitor is not destined to be seen even in maximum configuration- will have to be content with only a monochrome display. But there is a SYNC system - an obvious nod to the younger generation. Understands voice commands, synchronizes with the phone and even knows how to read incoming text messages aloud.

I switch to the left lane, simultaneously pressing on the gas to bypass the bus ... and come back: after me, an ancient Mercedes has already jumped into the left lane, and EcoSport suddenly refused to accelerate - there is no traction! The motor is riding, so it is useless to expect peppy starts from it. In the mountains, the situation became even worse - the engine noticeably loses power with climb, strains, hums, with every attempt to accelerate it seems to take on a full breast of air and only then starts to push. Colleagues who happened to be on a high mountain pass driving both versions complained of even more serious asthma attacks in the two-liter Duratek and not the most successful for such conditions gear ratios in the MKPP.

Down on the flats, however, the 2.0-litre Ecosport accelerates better, thanks in part to the manual gearbox. Although the difference in 18 horsepower is somewhat offset by the additional weight of the machine itself, the all-wheel drive EcoSport with a plug-in electromagnetic clutch in rear axle a good centner heavier than a front-wheel drive.

With light off-road, all-wheel drive copes quite tolerably, it is not even afraid of diagonal hangings - the Dana clutch quickly understands when to come into play. Electronics regularly holds the slipping wheels, however, when starting to climb, it works too hard: at the slightest slip, it clamps the wheels - and the car remains in place. On rough terrain and when overcoming fords, the engine spoils the picture a little - the two-liter Duratec, like its younger brother, lacks a little traction on the bottoms. The missing diesel would perfectly complement the off-road image ...

The EcoSport rear suspension differs depending on the type of drive: a semi-independent beam is installed on front-wheel drive versions, and an independent multi-link is installed on all-wheel drive versions. Geometric cross-country ability boasts very enviable figures: the angles of entry and exit are 22.2 and 31.6 degrees, respectively.

The suspension on bad roads behaves perfectly, it works out the bumps remarkably, it copes especially well with a small comb - a minimum of vibrations, lays smoothly, like a glove. On transverse waves, it is no longer so comfortable - due to the short base and high center of gravity characteristic of this class, the car is very goaty and nods even on seemingly harmless changes in terrain. You will not envy rear passengers here. But on flat roads EcoSport was pleasantly surprised - it seems to be high, but the rolls are small, it keeps the trajectory perfectly and dives willingly into the studs of the mountain serpentine. And noticeably more interesting in terms of taxiing proved to be a lighter front-to-back.

Good geometric cross-country ability also allows Ecosport to feel confident on light off-road conditions - a decent ground clearance of 203 mm is hidden behind a bright unusual appearance (for front-wheel drive it is 3 mm less) and short overhangs. In general, the designers managed very well not to spoil the practicality with a bright look. For example, the button for opening the tailgate was elegantly hidden in the body of the right lamp, and the handle was built into the ceiling. It looks interesting, it is convenient to open, and the dirt does not get on the button - it is hidden to the conscience. This arrangement of the lock is due to the fact that the door itself opens "off-road" to the side, on a gently working gas rack. Moreover, in the right direction, to the left - you approach the trunk from the side of the curb without the risk of being splashed or, what’s good, hit by passing cars. It seems to be a trifle - but on one of the generations of the iconic Toyota RAV4, for example, this was not taken into account.

The disadvantages include flaws in aerodynamics: at least for Russian market sound insulation and improved, at speeds over 100 km / h, the Georgian mountain wind is already starting to sing "Suliko" somewhere in the area of ​​\u200b\u200bthe A-pillars. Yes, and the racks themselves are too wide - it seems that the car is small, but they hide visibility noticeably.

Trunk volume is modest - only 310 liters. But the back of the rear sofa can be placed vertically, which will increase the volume already up to 375 liters. True, the rear passengers will definitely not say thank you at the same time - it is uncomfortable to sit with a vertically raised back.

The view back through the interior mirror also suffers - into a narrow rear glass shyly peeks the edge of the spare tire. By the way, you should remind yourself about the presence of a spare tire on the fifth door when parking. in reverse- you don’t immediately get used to the idea that such a baby has another 30 centimeters lurking behind, which are not visible in the side mirrors.

As for the interior, here Ford remains true to itself: the front panel is borrowed from the Fiesta hatchback, on the basis of which the EcoSport is assembled. Same dashboard with bizarre rhombuses of buttons, the same plastic is generally quite decent, but in some places it sins with cheapness. And even though you don’t particularly roam in the back row, but in the driver’s seat it’s spacious and comfortable, the space feels a little less than in the Duster, but clearly more than driving the Dzhuk. The seat cushion is high, the instruments are unpretentious, but perfectly readable, and the steering wheel is adjustable for both reach and tilt, and is very comfortable - it's fun to steer the Ecosport.

Yes, that's pretty cool. Still, young drivers behind the wheel of the Ecosport are much easier to imagine than some mustachioed middle-aged man in a plaid shirt and jeans. Latin American enthusiasm was somehow transferred to the car, and now it infects the driver with it: it is interesting and pleasant to drive it, even despite not the most powerful engines. The only problem is that the manufacturer doomed new crossover to a very severe fight, putting him in a duel against the most popular models in fact, in two different niches - and snatching a piece of the pie from both will be very difficult. On the other hand, if not furnish, then at least slightly spoil the life of EcoSport can be both utilitarian and youth image crossovers. Now the main intrigue is which EcoSport audience will look more.

Surely many of our readers remember the car Ford Fusion, which Ford dealers have just finished selling. This model was quite popular in our country due to its low price, good ground clearance and off-road landing. Fusion outwardly resembled a small crossover, although in fact it was not. The car was discontinued several years ago, and its replacement appeared quite recently - last fall, sales of the EcoSport model began in Russia. Certainly, this car it would be wrong to call the successor of Fusion (it is rather Ford B-Max, which is not supplied to our country), but in terms of its ideology, EcoSport is very similar to it, except that it is also aimed at a youth audience, while Fusion was usually bought by family people.

The Ford EcoSport is produced in Russia at the Ford Sollers plant in Naberezhnye Chelny. This plant was upgraded last year, and the EcoSport was the first car to roll off the upgraded assembly line. Thus, now the following products are produced in the territory of Tatarstan: Ford models: Transit, Tourneo Custom, Transit Custom, S-MAX, Galaxy, Explorer, Kuga (all at the plant in Yelabuga) and EcoSport. At the end of this year, it is planned to open a plant for the production of Ford engines in Yelabuga. The planned annual capacity at the first stage will be 105,000 units with a possible further increase to 200,000 per year (although this is unlikely to be required in the current economic conditions). The car looks better in real life than in the pictures. However, one cannot but admit that from some angles EcoSport does not look very good. It certainly cannot be called the most beautiful crossover on the market, but thanks to the original appearance of the Ecosport, you can not confuse it with competing cars.

Due to the small width and original shape of the radiator grille, the car seems a little awkward. The EcoSport looks much prettier in profile. Lower body small crossover trimmed with unpainted plastic, which hints at the off-road qualities of the car.

Despite the “compound” shape of the front end, EcoSport clearly came out with a face. Even the two-tone bumper does not seem like a foreign element here. Daytime running lights are built into the fog lights (there are two bulbs) - a very original solution. Xenon is not available even as an option, so you have to be content with conventional halogens. Daytime running lights and PTF are offered starting with the Trend Plus package, while the chrome grille and chrome foglight surrounds are a privilege of the more expensive Titanium and Titanium Plus versions.

Behind the Ford EcoSport is trying to look like a real SUV - one thing is worth it spare wheel attached to the tailgate. Such a solution is less and less common even among real off-road vehicles, to say nothing of compact crossovers. Like the front, the central part of the rear bumper is painted silver. The Ford EcoSport tested by us in the Titanium Plus configuration is equipped with a keyless entry system - the lock buttons are built not only into the front door opening handles, but also into the very right lamp responsible for opening the trunk. This is a great Ford find: every time you go to your EcoSport with a hypermarket purchase, you will thank the company's specialists for making it easy and simple to open the car.

The tailgate leans to the side, gas springs (gas lift) are used to facilitate its opening. When parking in a confined space, remember that opening the tailgate will require a lot of space behind the car, and there are no intermediate positions. It is worth noting a special recess in the door, which increases the volume of a small luggage compartment. Unfortunately, there are no handles in the inside of the fifth door, so it is almost impossible to close the trunk without getting dirty.

The length of the EcoSport is 4273 mm, and without a spare wheel there will be about four meters at all. Naturally, the trunk in such a car cannot be large. Depending on the angle of the rear seatbacks, the luggage space is up to 375 liters, and with the seats fully folded down, it reaches an already more impressive 1238 liters.

The basic modification of Trend rely on 16-inch steel wheels, all other options boast already 16-inch alloy wheels― 17-inch wheels can also be ordered for a surcharge. The front brakes of the EcoSport are disc, but the rear, suddenly, are drum! And this is on a car that got on the conveyor in 2014.

Clearance, according to passport data, is as much as 200 mm - a very worthy indicator. EcoSport has short front and rear overhangs, which also adds to its points off paved roads. The maximum depth of the overcome ford ― 550 mm, rake angle entry - 22 degrees, rear - 35 degrees. So the Ford EcoSport can easily handle the road to the dacha, the main thing is not to get carried away, after all, this is an urban crossover, and not a Niva or UAZ.

The car provided for testing was, as is usually the case, in the highest possible configuration - Titanium Plus. It includes leather-trimmed seats and engine start with a button. The quality of the leather coating cannot be called high, the leather on the driver's seat has already worn out a little - although the car has traveled only 10 thousand kilometers. However, a similar problem occurs in much more expensive cars.

The EcoSport interior will feel familiar to Fiesta owners and Focus third generations. True, the finishing materials here are worse - soft plastic cannot be found here.

Side mirrors with electric adjustment, heating and built-in direction indicators are already available in the base, the only pity is that there is no electric folding even in the top configuration. Power windows front and rear doors are also present in all trim levels, auto mode only the driver has it. The button block is located a little further than it should be, so blindly lowering the desired glass is far from always possible.

The three-spoke steering wheel is trimmed in leather, the steering column is adjustable in height and angle. On the steering wheel there are buttons for controlling the multimedia system and cruise control.

In the two older trim levels, the Ford EcoSport is equipped with the SYNC multimedia system with Bluetooth and voice control in Russian, complemented by a 3.5-inch matrix display located at the top of the center console. Under the buttons of the multimedia system there is a door lock key and an emergency gang.

A little lower is the climate control unit. In EcoSport, it is single-zone, two washers responsible for fan speed and temperature are located on the sides of the other keys, assembled in a circle with a small display in the middle. There are also buttons for heating the windshield and rear windows, a little lower - the keys for heating the front seats and the button for forced activation of all-wheel drive.

AUX and USB connectors are hidden between the front seats, and there is also a cigarette lighter socket nearby. The leather armrest is too short and narrow - obviously, this is a consequence of the modest dimensions of the car.

Despite the small Ford EcoSport base, two people can be accommodated on the rear sofa with relative comfort, although if you wish, you can make room and endure a short three-way trip. rear seats add up in a ratio of 2/3.

A high center of gravity requires sacrifice in the form of increased body roll. This is especially annoying when there are no ceiling handles. Maybe, when we will weld the body and carry out the final assembly, think about the handles in the ceiling.

But the 2-liter engine, as the Ford Ecosport test showed, unexpectedly disappointed. Not only does it produce only 145 hp with 95 gasoline, but it does not provide any decent dynamics. The difference in acceleration with a 1.6 engine, if any, is minimal.

Even on the track, the powerful Ford Ecosport does not shine with dynamics and forces you to often switch from sixth gear to third and unscrew the engine to maximum speed. In addition, this version is already 100 thousand rubles more expensive (base price 899,000 rubles) than a similarly equipped version 1.6 with a robot. A dubious purchase, exclusively for four-wheel drive enthusiasts, but then it’s better for them to pay attention to larger models. Say what you like, but our test Ford Ecosport could not reveal the qualities of a serious SUV, the Ecosport is too simple for this.
