Design features of the front axle UAZ Patriot. Gear lock

The entire line of UAZ all-wheel drive vehicles has the same transmission design. On the Patriot and Hunter models, as well as all additional models created on their basis, Spicer-type units are installed, which are equipped with a continuous crankcase. They are named so in honor of the engineer K. Spicer. He is the author of a large number of patents that are now owned by Dana Co.

This type of front axle first appeared on the 3160 and 3162, after which they began to be used on the Patriot, Hunter and pickups based on them.

The front axle UAZ Patriot has combined functions. It can be both master and managed at the same time. It is based on a hollow beam, inside which the main gear and differential pass. Through them, the torque is supplied to the front hubs.

The axle shaft is made in the form of a whole part, with CV joints installed, which allow you to enter a large angle of rotation, while maintaining torque.

At the moment, such hinges are also installed on other UAZ models on old-type nodes - Timken. This allows you to combine the great reliability required for passenger-and-freight transport with good handling. Such models are called hybrid bridges.

The rear axle of the UAZ Patriot is also made in the form of a hollow beam, at the ends of which, with the help of special bearings, the hubs of the driving wheels are fixed. They are driven by an internal differential. This is the design of the rear and front axle pretty similar.

Design features.

To give the structure the greatest strength, the thickness of the substrate is increased by almost 10 millimeters. As a result, reliability has increased significantly, but the noise level has decreased. The first type was mainly used on cars with a gasoline engine, the second only on diesel engines produced since 2015.

When buying, it is also worth considering that the width of the bridges for some models is different. For example, Hunters are equipped with front nodes with catalog number 31605-2300011. They provide a track size of 1445 millimeters, a gear ratio of 4.111. Model 3162-2400010-10 is installed on Patriots and pickups

The rear assembly has a catalog number 3162-2400010-10 with a gear ratio of 4.111.

Status check.

Maintenance must begin with an external inspection of the bridges and control of the oil level in the crankcase. It should be at the level of the drain plug hole. In addition, periodically check the tightness of all bolts, the absence of gaps in the gears.

When changing the oil, you need to check for the presence of metal chips on the magnet drain plug. Its presence will indicate the development on the gears.

Gap adjustment.

Axial clearance is the most common problem that occurs during vehicle operation. This is due to severe wear of the gear teeth, which over time can lead to jamming of the bridge.

You can check the condition by shaking the drive gear by the flange.

To eliminate this problem, it is necessary to properly tighten the flange nut. This may require a little effort, since it has a small punching applied to it. Tighten until the gap is gone.

Useful video

For cars UAZ Patriot and UAZ Hunter, as well as all models based on them, front and rear single-stage drive axles of the Spicer type with a one-piece crankcase are installed, named after the American engineer Clarence Spicer, the author of more than thirty patents and the owner of Spicer Manufacturing Company, now - Dana Corporation .

The front and rear axles of the Spicer type began to be installed on the UAZ-3160 and UAZ-3162 Simbir cars, instead of the bridges of the old design, and from them they were already inherited by the UAZ Patriot, UAZ Pickup, UAZ Cargo and UAZ Hunter.

Front and rear axle of Spicer type on UAZ Patriot, device.

The front axle is combined, it simultaneously performs the functions of a driving and a controlled one, it is a rigid hollow beam, inside of which the main hypoid gear and differential are located. From the main gear, the torque is transmitted to the front hubs through the axle shafts.

The axle shaft is a single piece with constant velocity joints (CV joints) of the Rzepp-Birfield type, named after its inventor Alfred Rzepp and the American firm Beerfield that produced it under a patent. It is more compact than the Bendix-Weiss joint on Timken axles, can operate at higher angles and transmit more torque.

At present, the front axles of the old design of the Timken type, which are still installed on cars, are also equipped with such hinges. For this reason, they acquired the name - hybrid bridges.

The rear axle is a rigid hollow beam, at the ends of which the hubs of the driving wheels are mounted on bearings, and the main hypoid gear and differential are located inside. From the main gear, the torque is transmitted through the axle shafts to the hub. The front and rear axles have main gears and differentials similar in design.

Design features of the front and rear axle Spicer type.

Spicer-type axles are largely unified with single-stage axles of the old Timken type design, they have the same differential bearings, rear axle shafts and almost all parts of the hub assemblies.

The thickness of the driven gear substrate in the new axles has been increased by 8 millimeters, this has reduced noise and increased the reliability of the final drive. The new differential can be used on old single-stage axles with a split crankcase, provided that a compensator ring is installed on the cup stud.

Currently produced front and rear axles of the Spicer type have a final drive ratio of 4.111 or 4.625. The first are installed mainly on UAZ vehicles with gasoline engines, and the second - for cars with diesel engines, and all vehicles from model year 2015.

So-called narrow axles with a track of 1445 mm are installed on UAZ Hunter vehicles and all models based on it, the front axle catalog number is 31605-2300011 - the final drive ratio is 4.111, or 31608-2300011 with a gear ratio of 4.625. Rear axle catalog number 31605-2400010-30 - gear ratio 4.111 or 31514-2400010-10 - from 4.625.

UAZ Patriot, UAZ Pickup and UAZ Cargo vehicles are equipped with wide axles with a track of 1600 mm, front axle catalog number 3163-2300011, 3163-2300011-10, 3163-2300011-10, gear ratio 4.111 or 4.625. Rear axle catalog number 3162-2400010-10, 3163-2400010, gear ratio 4.111 or 4.625.

Check and Maintenance front and rear axles of the Spicer type on the UAZ.

Maintenance of the front and rear axles is to maintain required level gear oil in their crankcase, it should be at the bottom edge of the filler hole, and replace it in a timely manner.

And also in checking the seals, timely detection and elimination of axial gaps in the main gear gears, periodic cleaning of the safety valve, tightening all fasteners and cleaning the magnetic plug from metal particles when replacing gear oil.

To lubricate the Bearfield-type hinges, a special SHRUS-4 grease is used, which must not be put into the entire internal cavity of the steering knuckle, as before, but only into the hinge itself. The use of greases of a different type, including the traditional Litol-24, is unacceptable. During operation, the addition of lubricant to the hinge is not required. The inner cavity of the steering knuckle is filled with Litol-24 grease.

Adjustment of axial clearances in the front and rear axle UAZ.

Axial clearance in the bearings of the drive gear of the final drive is not allowed, since if it is present, the gear teeth will quickly wear out and the bridge may jam. The presence of axial clearance is checked by swinging the drive gear by the mounting flange cardan shaft.

To eliminate the axial clearance of the drive gear, it is necessary to tighten the flange nut. The nut has a punching into the groove of the threaded part of the drive gear and when tightening, more force on the key will be required. The nut is tightened carefully until the axial clearance of the drive gear is eliminated, preventing it from being overtightened, after which it is re-punched. If it is not possible to tighten the centered nut, then it should first be loosened by 0.5-1.0 turns, and then tightened until the axial clearance is eliminated and centered.

Axial play in the bearings of the final drive differential is also not allowed. Its check is made by swinging the driven gear with the crankcase cover removed. The axial clearance of the driven gear of the final drive is eliminated by tightening the differential bearing nut, having previously removed the lock plate.

Adjusting the UAZ Patriot bridge is a rather long and time-consuming process, which includes many nuances that must be consistently followed in order to avoid problems during repairs.

Bridge adjustment is needed if there are problems in the form of tooth breakage, oil leakage, bearing wear, etc. This is possible not because the quality of the parts leaves much to be desired, but because of improper operation of the car, as well as if the bearing clearance is incorrectly set final drive gear, lack of oil or its poor quality. The consequences of this can be as extraneous noise in the bridge, fuel consumption, deterioration in handling, increased wear of parts, and you can even catch the wedge of the bridge.

To prevent this from happening, it is necessary to carry out special repair work such as oil seal replacement, bearing adjustment replacement. At the end of such work, you should check the correct adjustment of the bridge, you can determine by the temperature of the bridge after a fast ride.

Remember that a timely oil change helps prolong the life of your parts!
If you have a problem with fuel consumption, then it will help you

- Breakage of the teeth of the main pair.
— Breakage of the teeth of the axle shafts.
— Leakage of oil through the seals.
- Worn or damaged differential bearings.
- Wear or destruction of the teeth of the main pair.
- Wear and destruction of wheel bearings.
— Destruction of adjusting washers.

Causes of malfunctions

- Improper operation. UAZ Patriot is rear wheel drive plug-in car
front bridge. If you drive with the front axle connected on hard roads, and even with turns (!), Then the transmission will not last long.
- The presence of axial clearance in the bearings of the final drive gear.
- The presence of axial clearance in the bearings of the final drive differential.
- Wear of parts, usually due to the lack of the required quantity and quality of gear oil.
- Wear of parts due to poor quality. High-quality bearings, adjusting rings must be looked for.
- Overloads during operation due to necessity (for example, competition) or inability to drive.
- Incorrect adjustment of the main pair.
- Not timely replacement of transmission oil.
- Operation with a brand of gear oil out of season.
— Overloads from blocking.
- Long-term operation with different tire pressures.
- Runout of the cardan shaft (poor quality of the shaft, destruction of the crosses, destruction of the outboard bearing).
- Lack of lubrication in the spline connection of the cardan shaft.
- Incorrect tuning - the length and stroke of the cardan shaft do not correspond to the changes made.
- Incorrect tuning - incorrect transmission ratios.
- Lack of high-quality lubrication in the bearing hubs.
- Prolonged slipping of one wheel while fixing the other wheel.
- Incorrect and untimely adjustment of the wheel bearings.

Consequences of malfunctions - Rear and front axle UAZ Patriot

— Noise in the bridge.
- Increased fuel consumption.
- Deterioration of controllability.
- Increased wear of transmission and engine elements due to increased load.
- Jamming while driving is the worst. The main cause of axle jamming is the presence of axial play in the bearings of the final drive gear or the presence of axial play in the bearings of the final drive differential. Jamming of the rear axle of the UAZ Patriot really happens if the owner completely starts his car or treats it completely ugly, because before jamming, the bridges report with a long rumble, noise and crackle that they need repairs. The bridge can jam if it gets very hot.

Rear and front axle

Cause of the malfunction and remedy
Constant increased noise during operation of the front axle
1. Worn or incorrectly adjusted differential bearings.
2. Incorrect adjustment. damage or wear of gears or gearbox bearings.
3. insufficient amount of oil in the axle housing.

1.1. Replace worn parts, adjust differential bearing.
2.2.Identify the gearbox failure, repair or replace it

Wear of the hole for the axis of the satellites in the differential box Replace the differential box and, if necessary, the axis of the satellites
Replacing the oil seal of the drive gear shaft of the front axle reducer

Replace the oil seal if oil leaks from under the reducer flange.

Adjustment of bearings of the main transfer of the forward bridge
Adjust bearings of the main transfer in a following order.

1. Pick up the adjusting ring 5 (see Fig. 6.4). Its thickness d1 (Fig. 6.5) is determined (with an accuracy of + -0.025 mm) based on the actual dimensions B and D (see Fig. 6.5 and 6.6) according to the formula d1 \u003d B - (111.960 + D) (mm).

Rice. 6.6. Adjustment parameters differential bearings

Rice. 6.7. Measuring the installation height of the final drive gear bearing:

1 - mandrel; 2 - outer race of the bearing; 3 - bearing

Install the ring in the crankcase 16 (see Fig. 6.4) of the final drive.
2. Install the drive gear shaft into the front axle housing.

Note
Check the torque of the drive gear shaft. It should be 1.0-2.0 N/cm (0.1-0.2 kgf/cm).
3. When installing the differential assembly with the driven gear, measure the dimension E (Fig. 6.7), applying an axial force P equal to 4000-5000 N (400-500 kgf) and turning the gear several times so that the bearing rollers take the correct position. Measure the distance B in the crankcase (see Fig. 6.5) from the axis of the drive gear to the thrust end face of the differential bearing. According to the actual dimensions B, E and the mounting size of the driven gear equal to 50 mm, select (with an accuracy of + -0.025 mm) the adjusting ring according to the formula
d2 \u003d B - (E + 50 + X) (mm), where d2 is the thickness of the adjusting ring;
X - maximum deviation from mounting dimension, equal to 50 mm, with the corresponding sign (plus or minus), this size is electrographed on the end face of the driven gear.
4. Install the differential assembly with the outer rings of its bearings and the adjusting ring in the front axle housing and secure it.
5. Adjust the bearings 6 and 22 (see Fig. 6.4) of the front axle differential by tightening the nut 23, periodically rotating the differential so that the bearing rollers take the correct position. After tightening the nut, the total turning torque of the differential drive gear (Mv. sh.) Should be within Mv. sh. + (0.21-0.42) (Nm). Check by turning the drive gear.

Fig.(6.8.) Measuring the installation dimension of the differential with bearing:

1, 5 - mandrel; 2 - differential assembly with driven gear; 3 - bearing; 4 - outer race of the bearing

Note
Check and adjust the side clearance in the engagement of the gears of the installed new final drive kit after adjusting the position of the gears.
The side clearance is checked with an indicator, the rack of which is attached to the axle housing in the direction perpendicular to the surface of the driven gear tooth when the indicator rack is attached to the housing of the indicator rack. Check the gap on three or four teeth evenly spaced around the circumference. The spread of gap values should not exceed 0.05 mm. Normal side clearance should be within 0.15-0.25 mm. If the backlash is less than the specified value, then the selected adjusting ring should be replaced with a ring of smaller thickness. When checking and adjusting the side clearance, it is not necessary to create a preload in the differential bearings.
6. Tighten the adjusting nut 23 until it comes into contact with the bearings and there is no play in them.
7. Check the engagement of the main gear gears along the contact patch, for which paint the teeth of the driven gear with paint (2 teeth in three or four places evenly around the circumference). 8. Braking the drive gear shaft by the flange, rotate the driven gear in both directions until contact spots appear on the gear teeth, as shown in fig. 6.8.

Note
With the correct adjustment of the meshing of the gears, the contact patch should be located in the places of the teeth shown in fig. 6.8 (pos. 1).

With contact at the top of the tooth (key 2), move the drive gear towards the driven gear by increasing the thickness of the adjusting ring, and move the driven gear away from the drive gear to maintain backlash.
With contact at the base of the tooth (key 3), move the drive gear away from the driven gear by reducing the thickness of the adjusting ring, and move the driven gear towards the drive gear to maintain backlash.

Rice. (6.9.) Location of the contact patch on the teeth of the final drive gears:
And — the party of a forward course; B - side reversing; 1 - correct location; 2 - the contact spot is located at the top of the tooth; 3 - the contact spot is located at the base of the tooth; 4 - the contact spot is located at the narrow end of the tooth; 5 - the contact spot is located at the wide end of the tooth
With contact at the narrow end of the tooth (key 4), move the driven gear away from the drive gear by reducing the thickness of the adjusting ring, while moving the drive gear towards the driven gear to maintain backlash.
With contact at the wide end of the tooth (key 5), move the driven gear towards the drive gear by increasing the thickness of the adjusting ring, and move the drive gear away from the driven gear to maintain backlash.
9. Install the lock plate on the differential bearing cap.
10. After assembling the main gear, check its heating after making a test drive on the car. If the front axle housing in the area of the drive gear bearings and differential bearings heats up above 90 0C, adjust the preload again

Elimination of leakage through the hubs of bridges

It will take: new cover bolts (optional), grease to fix threaded connections, sealant, degreaser (white spirit or kerosene).
- Jack up the wheel or raise the car on a lift.
- Remove hub cap.
- Bolts must be thoroughly cleaned in a solvent and dried.
— Clean the cover and hub in solvent and dry.
- Clean the threads in the hub with solvent and dry.
- Bring the cover to the hub and check the tightness and the absence of distortions.
- Apply (smear) a thin even layer of sealant on the cover and hub.
Align the bolt holes in the cover and on the hub.
- After applying a lubricant to the threads of the bolts to fix the threaded connections, start the bolts (without lock washers).
- Tighten the bolts evenly and finally tighten.
- Sealant should come out evenly around the edges. After it hardens, cut off the excess.
- Do not lower the car on the wheels for at least one hour until the sealant hardens.

Filler cap and drain plug

The filler plug of the gearbox tends to sour tightly over time. This is due to the fact that the thread in it is cone-shaped.
Without waiting for this moment, you should unscrew it, clean (wipe) the plug and the threads on the gearbox with a degreasing agent (white spirit or kerosene).
Lubricate the thread of the plug with a high-quality lubricant for fixing threaded connections without sparing the amount of lubricant.
Tighten the plug to such an extent that there is no oil leakage without overtightening.

Replacing the oil seals of the bridge UAZ Patriot

How to replace the rear axle seal.
Replacing the axle gearbox oil seal on the UAZ Patriot:
Correctly installed high-quality oil seals last a very long time.
Never re-install removed oil seals that have been used.
Buy quality seals.
If high-quality oil seals begin to leak quickly, then the reason should not be sought in the oil seals, but in the adjustment of the bridge, the fastening and quality of the driveshaft, crosses, and outboard bearing.
- Unscrew the cardan shaft.
- Unscrew the flange fastening nut (nut of the drive gear shaft of the rear axle reduction gear).
- Remove the flange.
- Remove the oil seal from the neck of the gearbox with a flat screwdriver.
— Clean the sealing area with a degreasing agent (white spirit or kerosene).
- Before installation, lubricate the inside of the stuffing box, the one that should be in contact with the shaft and oil. transmission oil.
- When installing as a pressure test, an old stuffing box is sometimes used. It is desirable to wash such an omentum in order to “not introduce an infection”.
- The process of installing the gland in place must be accurate, without distortion, both as a result of installation and during the pressing process.
- After installation, the inner (working) part of the stuffing box, i.e. friction points, once again lubricate with the liquid in which it will work - transmission oil.
- Install parts in reverse order. When installing the flange, when tightening the nut, turn it by the flange so that the bearing rollers snap into place.

1 - bolt; 2, 33 - spring washers; 3 - driven gear; 4, 24 - axle shafts; 5 - adjusting ring; 6, 22 - bearings; 7 - spacer sleeve; 8 - outer race of the outer roller bearing; 9 - roller bearing; 10 - thrust ring; 11 - stuffing box; 12 - reflector; 13- flange; 14 - washer; 15 - nut; 16 - axle housing; 17 - adjusting ring of the drive gear; 18 - outer race of the inner roller bearing; 19 - inner roller bearing; 20 - oil flinger ring; 21 - shaft with drive gear; 23 - adjusting nut of differential bearings; 25, 39 - right and left parts of the differential housing; 26 - bolt; 27, 40 - support washers of the axle shaft gear; 28, 43 - axle gears; 29, 45 — axes of the satellites of the differential; 30, 41, 44, 46 - differential satellites; 31, 38 - differential bearing caps; 32 - retainer for the adjusting nut of the differential bearings; 34, 36, 37 - bolts; 35 - cover of the crankcase of the main gear; 42 — laying of a cover of a crankcase of the main transfer

Bridge UAZ Patriot adjustable selection of adjusting rings and tightening the bearings of the differential and final drive.
The selection of adjusting rings ensures the correct engagement of the final drive gears. The correctness of the engagement of the main gear gears is checked by the contact patch.
Correct tightening of bearings is determined by the total torque, the value of which is measured in Nm. Naturally, in practice, no one is interested in these units of measurement. The process of tightening bearings is determined solely by the ability and experience of the master. To check the correct adjustment of the bridge, special measuring instruments are used.

After repairing and adjusting the UAZ Patriot bridge, it should not “buzz” from the very beginning of operation. If in the first days of operation the bridge is buzzing, then after running in the hum will not disappear. During break-in, a serviceable and properly adjusted axle does not hum. Without proper repair, "humming" bridges will not hum less.

To check the correct adjustment of the UAZ Patriot bridge, it is not at all necessary to be able to adjust it. Before doing anything, check the temperature of the bridge after a fast drive. If the bridge is very hot, then it can definitely be argued that it, at a minimum, needs to be regulated. If such a bridge is not repaired, then sooner or later it will jam.
1. Unscrew the cardan from the bridge. On a raised car, rotating the axle flange (the place where the cardan is attached) in both directions by hand, you can feel the presence of broken teeth, assess the condition of the bearings and other problems.
2. After removing the bridge cover, check the condition of the teeth on the main gear and differential by turning the bridge. There should be no cracks, wear, roughness in places of the contact patch, cuts and torn teeth. Assess the location of the contact patch. In the crankcase, you can sometimes find the remains of destroyed adjusting rings and broken elements. These problems are real. If everything is intact, then the bridge can be adjusted. If there are problems then...
3. Check up presence of cross backlashes in bearings. If there are gaps, then the bridge must be adjusted until it is jammed.
4. Check up correctness of gearing of the main transfer. To do this, paint the teeth of the main gear with paint from an aerosol can and, turning the bridge in both directions, determine the pattern of engagement marks. The following figure shows the correct location of the contact patch on the gear teeth of the final drive of the UAZ Patriot axle.

In the following photo, an example of incorrect adjustment of the main pair and the presence of roughness at the points of contact:

After adjusting the rear axle, there should be no axial clearance in the main gear drive gear bearings and in the final drive differential bearings. Axial clearance in the axle bearings is the main cause of axle noise and jamming due to the destruction of the teeth in the main pair. There are very few craftsmen who know how to properly adjust the main pair of the bridge. Instructions on the Internet are not very helpful, as the process is iterative, requiring not only ability, but also experience. We specialize in drive axle adjustment. People come to us from other cities on the recommendations of our customers for the bulkhead of leading axles and checkpoints, including foreign cars. Driving axles, aluminum and UAZ tuning are our competitive advantage.

Oil change

The UAZ Patriot transmission should be filled with the most quality oil which you can afford. Too little quality can flow through poor quality seals.

Very often in the rear axle over time, due to the ingress of moisture into it, the oil turns into a thick, non-fluid slurry. Easy replacement oil in such a bridge does not have the desired effect. If you are unsure, remove the axle and axle cover and clean the axle. Have no illusions - if the breathers are not removed, if they traveled on water, if a lot of time has passed, etc., then there is no oil in the bridge. Moreover, the slurry is not in the gearbox, but closer to the hubs. Those. rear axle wheel bearings are practically not lubricated.

Breathers. Conclusion of breathers in the engine compartment

Breathers on bridges must be removed in engine compartment so that no water gets into the bridge under any circumstances. For this, brake hoses are usually used and brake pipes. It is easier to use oil resistant hoses.

At the end of the tubes under the hood, a plastic fine fuel filter is installed from the classics so that dust does not enter the bridge. At the same time, the end of the tube is bent down so that water does not get into the bridge even if the car goes into the water more than the location of the end of the tubes.

On cars with a compressor, during extreme operation, excess air pressure is sometimes created in the transmission - as if they inflate the bridges, the box and the transfer case from the inside. This completely eliminates the ingress of water and dirt inside and well lubricates the seals in friction points.

Sometimes at the end of the tube set expansion tank with a balloon to create volume. In this case, the connection between the internal space of the bridge and the atmosphere is completely closed. When the volume of air in the bridge changes during heating and cooling balloon inflates or compresses.

If you drove through a ford more than 30 cm deep, then you should immediately (on the same day) change the oil in the transmission - this is the manufacturer's instruction. Draw your own conclusions.

Wheel bearing adjustment

Adjust the wheel bearings of the spicer axle in the following sequence:

Jack up the vehicle on the side of the wheel whose bearings are to be adjusted.

- Bend the tab of the lock washer 6, unscrew the lock nut 7 and remove the lock washer.

- Loosen the nut 4 for adjusting the bearings by 1/6-1/3 turn (1-2 edges).

- Turning the wheel by hand, check the ease of its rotation (the wheel should rotate freely without touching brake pads per disc or drum).

- Tighten the hub bearing adjustment nut. Tightening torque 30 - 40 Nm (3.0 - 4.0 kg/cm). When tightening the nut, turn the wheel to properly place the rollers on the raceways of the bearing rings and press the wrench knob smoothly, without jerking.

- Install the lock washer, screw on and tighten the lock nut. Tightening torque 30 - 40 Nm (3.0 - 4.0 kg/cm). Install the lock washer with the inner mustache in the groove of the trunnion. If there are even slight cracks on the mustache of the lock washer, replace the washer.

— Check the bearing adjustment after tightening the locknut. With proper adjustment, the wheel should rotate freely without jamming, noticeable axial play and pitching.

Bend one tab of the lock washer onto the face of the nut, and the other onto the face of the locknut.

- Insert the rear axle shaft or put the front axle wheel off clutch, clean the threaded part of the bolts from sealant residues, degrease and apply a new layer of sealant, tighten the bolts.

Finally, check the correctness of the bearing adjustment by observing the heating of the wheel hubs after driving the car.

If the hub heats up strongly (the hand does not tolerate heat), loosen the nut by 1/6 turn (1 face), following the sequence and rules outlined above.

When checking the adjustment of the bearings for heating, do not use the service brakes, as in this case the hubs may heat up from the discs and brake drums.

SUVs UAZ Patriot, Hunter from the factory are equipped with two drive axles: front and rear. Due to the presence of two bridges on the UAZ Patriot SUV, its cross-country ability is unmatched. The front axle, unlike the rear axle, is steerable. This indicates that the front axle is switched on only when necessary. The bridge that is installed on the UAZ is called the Spicer. It was developed back in the distant 90s, and every year everything was improved and supplemented. Today there is such news that Spicer will soon replace the old designs of units that are installed on "loaves" and "goats". Today we will pay attention to the front axle Spicer of the UAZ Patriot SUV. What is it, features, pros and how to adjust the product.

Features of the front axle

The Spicer bridge housing consists of cast material into which the axle shafts are pressed. The crankcase is closed with a crankcase cover. The transverse plane of the device has no connector, which increases the reliability and rigidity of the structure. Also, the differential and final drive of the Spicer bridge are in the same crankcase, which determines high accuracy engagement and operation of the device. All these features cause an increase in the performance of products. Now, to service the device, it is enough to remove the crankcase cover and carry out necessary repairs or product replacement. Periodic monitoring of the oil level in the system, timely replacement of seals and bearings, as well as the elimination of backlash in the gears and differential - all this is the main criterion for servicing the unit. Bridge Spicer is equipped with new types of hinges (CV joints), a feature of which is durability. These hinges require periodic lubrication of the structure, for which the SHRUS-4 material is used. It is unacceptable to use Litol-24 for lubricating hinges. Not less than important point is the gear ratio of the Spicer bridge. Devices are available with two meanings gear ratios front axles on the UAZ Patriot: 4.11 and 4.62. Bridges with a value of 4.11 are installed on the UAZ Patriot SUV with a ZMZ 409 gasoline engine, and 4.62 on diesel units ZMZ 514.

Benefits of the Spicer Bridge

The UAZ Patriot SUV is equipped with a wide-type front device. The advantage of this design is the following points: Increased track, which has a positive effect on stability vehicle both on road and off road. The track was increased to 160 cm. This also had a positive effect on the possibility of increasing the angle of rotation of the front wheels to 32 degrees. In this case, the SUV received better maneuverability on the road and beyond. The strength class of the steering knuckles has been increased, due to which the frequency of lubrication and repair work is reduced. Due to the presence of a new suspension, the UAZ Patriot car received better handling and stability.

Thus, these advantages indicate that the SUV has high off-road stability, as well as cross-country ability, which is important for such a unit.
