Each modern car must pass safety certification tests. This is no longer a tradition, but an obligation of the manufacturer, since the car cannot be allowed for sale without scoring a certain number of points according to the results of crash tests. EuroNCAP standards are considered to be among the most objective in the world. There are also a number of independent organizations, which also do not interfere with clobbering new cars, but such tests have, rather, an educational function.

Renault Duster in our market

Since then, some changes have been made to the design of the car, but they would not significantly affect the results of the four-year-old test. The test takes place in several stages, and in each of them certain criteria are set, according to which the overall safety rating of the car is set. During the test, the following are assessed:

  • Child Passenger Safety
  • Pedestrian safety

The effectiveness of devices that are responsible for security

To evaluate these parameters, EuroNCAP conducts three crash tests. The most common type of accident is a frontal impact, so the organization's specialists simulate the conditions of a car colliding at a speed of 64 km / h with a barrier that covers 40% of the car's area on the left. The next stage is a side kick. A cart with a mass of 950 kg hits the car in the area of ​​​​the central pillar. The speed of the trolley is 50 km/h. The third stage is a side collision with a pole.

During all tests, mannequins equipped with sensors are in the car, from which readings are instantly taken, and on their basis, experts draw a conclusion about the severity of injuries sustained by the driver and passengers. There is also a separate test for a pedestrian.

According to the conclusion of the EuroNCAP commission, Renault Duster received three stars out of five possible. For little budget crossover- this is quite a predictable result. When developing the design of power units, great attention was paid to economy, so many points that influenced the test results could have been prevented. But the availability and simplification of the design by any means could not but affect safety.

As a result, the safety of adult passengers and the driver received 11 points. In a frontal impact, sensors on dummies showed severe pressure experienced by the chest of the driver and front passengers. There is a certain danger dashboard in the event that the physique of the driver will differ from the dummy that was driving. In a side impact, the door opened on the Duster, and this affected the rigidity of the body, so the score was reduced to 7.2 points. A collision with a pole caused the car's tailgate to open. The overall score is 2.5 points.

The safety of child passengers was assessed using Britax Roemer BabySafe ISOFIX child seats for an 18-month-old child and Britax Roemer Duo Plus for a 36-month-old child. Safety was rated 23 points, which is very good result. At the same time, it is possible to install a child seat in the front seat, since the front passenger airbag has a deactivation function. According to the results of tests for pedestrian safety, Renault Duster showed only 10 points, or 28%, which indicates that a pedestrian has received injuries incompatible with life upon impact.

The Duster 1.5 took part in the test, diesel in the Laureate configuration, which includes a seat belt load limiter, front and side airbags to protect the head and chest. The test was conducted in 2011, and the designers always have the opportunity to correct the situation. Three stars, given the poor equipment of the Duster, cannot be considered a failure, but still I would like to hope that the designers will be able to make a good safe car out of a budget crossover.

Very different cars are often sold under the same name in Western European countries and in emerging markets. And if only the difference was in appearance or equipment list! There are many examples: Latin American ones, in crash tests performed noticeably worse than their counterparts for the European market. Renault Duster for India can now be added to the same list.

Recall that the Dacia Duster crossover, assembled at a plant in Pitesti, Romania, was smashed by Euro NCAP committee specialists back in 2011. The result turned out to be outstanding: in a frontal impact, the load on chest front riders. But thanks to four airbags (front and side), the Romanian crossover earned an honest three Euro NCAP stars.

But Renault Duster, produced at the plant in Indian Chennai, is deprived of airbags in the basic configuration. And in tests conducted by the Global NCAP organization, he did not receive a single point and not a single star for protecting the front riders. Although the crash tests here are not as severe as those of the Europeans (only a frontal impact is carried out, without a side impact). Global NCAP experts called the driver's head protection extremely weak. The load on the torso and thighs of both dummies was also high.

At the request of Renault, a second test of the car was carried out in a richer configuration with one airbag. Naturally, the result was better: nine points out of seventeen possible or three stars for the protection of the driver and front passenger. But this machine was far from exemplary: the mannequin's head slipped off the pillow dome, the chest protection was insufficient.

Interestingly, the Duster for the Latin American market showed a more outstanding result: four stars. It turned out that the Brazilian car has a larger airbag, which gives better head and chest protection.

Concerning Russian market, then the Renault Duster crossovers of the Moscow assembly are already “in the base” equipped with one driver's airbag. A front passenger airbag is offered for an extra charge starting with the “second” Expression configuration, and side airbags from the “third” version of the Privilege, and only the most expensive Luxe Privilege version, which costs under a million, offers all four pillows at no extra charge.

In the interior of the car in the video during the Renault Duster crash test, everything remains stable during a frontal impact, but the rear door opened, during the evaluation of the crash test, a fine was imposed on the car. Chest protection was rated as the ultimate in front seat. During the dynamic test, the vehicle scores high with 18 months of dummy protection. Pedestrian protection
