Ford Focus I sedan. Ford Focus I, II and III vehicle specifications Ford Focus I specifications

Sales market: Russia.

Restyling Ford Focus first generation took place in 2001. The front of the car has been updated with a bumper new design, the changed radiator grille, the headlights of the new sample have a single reflector replaced by separate round sections of the dipped and main beam. In the interior - new upholstery and new color schemes, improved equipment. The hatchback version (DBW) was used on Russian market almost as high in demand as the sedan - this car combines compact dimensions (this is the shortest version in the line - the length of the car is 4174 mm) and a relatively small but practical luggage compartment. At the end of 2002, the first "Focuses" appeared in the showrooms of dealers Russian production(their assembly was carried out at the plant in Vsevolozhsk). The car received a suspension adapted to bad roads. The former 1.6 Zetec petrol engine was replaced by a simpler and more omnivorous Brazilian 1.6 Zetec-RoCam with an 8-valve chain-driven timing. Due to this and other decisions, it was possible to bring the starting price of the car closer to the symbolic mark of $ 10,000.

The interior of the Ford Focus hatchback demonstrates the same bold approach to design as the exterior of the car. At the same time, the interior is distinguished by a solid finish, pleasant and high-quality seat upholstery, and well-thought-out ergonomics. At the same time, the updated Focus hatchback will delight the owner with a new design of seats, an updated architecture of controls on the center console, and the presence of rubber cup holders. The simplest version of the car includes power steering, adjustable steering column. As it is further equipped, the Focus will offer front power windows, air conditioning, central locking with remote trunk release, fog lights, steering wheel with leather trim. In the top version of Ghia (only with powerful 1.8 and 2.0 engines), alloy wheels and rear power windows become standard. An optional winter package added power mirrors and heated mirrors, seats, windshield, washer nozzles. Also, for a surcharge, the hatchback was offered a convenient device for fixing cargo in the trunk. Of the new features, the car received a navigation system, a CD changer for 6 discs, and climate control.

The Focus I hatchback was officially delivered to the Russian market starting with a modification with a 1.6-liter engine with 100 hp. A more powerful 1.8-liter unit has a reserve of 115 hp. The 2.0 liter unit produces 130 hp. In this modification, the manufacturer claims top speed 201 km / h and 9.2 seconds of acceleration from standstill to "hundreds". Of course, it should be noted that in the Focus hatchback line after restyling there were even more powerful versions in a three-door body - a 170-horsepower 2.0-liter Duratec-ST engine and even a 215-horsepower Duratec-RS turbo, the latter is able to accelerate the car to maximum speed of 232 km / h and 6.7 seconds from zero to "hundreds". Depending on the Ford modifications Focus hatchback (2001-2004) could be equipped with a 5- or 6-speed mechanical box gears or 4-speed automatic. Fuel consumption in the combined cycle lies in the range of 6.8-10.1 l / 100 km. Volume fuel tank Focus - 55 liters.

The first generation Ford Focus hatchback has front-wheel drive, an independent MacPherson strut front suspension and a rear multi-link Control Blade (with passive steering effect), which offers improved elasto-kinematic characteristics, increasing the stability and controllability of the machine. Ventilated disc brakes at the front are combined with rear drum brakes for the initial modifications, and with 1.8 and 2.0 engines, disc brakes are also installed at the rear - the developers considered this combination to be more optimal. In all modifications, the car received a power steering. The body dimensions of the Focus I hatchback are: length - 4174 mm, width - 1700 mm, height - 1440 mm. The wheelbase of 2615 mm provides a good amount of space for rear passengers. The minimum turning radius is 5.45 m. The trunk volume of the Focus I hatchback is 379 liters (for comparison, the sedan has 490 liters). Folding rear seats allow you to increase it to 1210 liters. Loading height - 700 mm.

In the initial configuration, the 2001-2004 Ford Focus offered an adjustable steering column and airbags for the driver and front passenger, belts with pretensioning and load limiting systems. In the top configuration, the ABS system and side airbags were offered. AT Euro crash test NCAP 1999 car received four stars (out of five) for driver and adult safety and two stars (out of four) for pedestrian safety.

Ford Focus has become a bestseller since its appearance on the Russian market, and a kind of benchmark for a family car. And after the start of production in Russia, the demand for the car only grew. Due to the large distribution of this model, there are no particular problems with maintenance. It should be borne in mind that the Focus was often used as a corporate vehicle. It is important to note that after restyling, the service life of running gear parts has increased, and some shortcomings have been eliminated. Second Generation Focus saw the light in 2004.

Ford Focus is compact car American firm Ford. Since 1999, about 500,000 vehicles have been produced and sold on the territory of the Russian Federation. As of 2010, the car has become the best-selling foreign vehicle in Russia. In European countries, the model is regularly included in the top ten most purchased cars.

In addition, the car received the "Car of the Year in the Russian Federation 2012" award in the "Small middle class". The C-class family car has become the most popular model for Russian drivers. It replaced an already outdated version of the Escort, which was desperately begging for retirement. Initially, the new Focus was supposed to become a bestseller and became one almost immediately after it appeared on the automotive market. In this article you will find an overview and description of the first and second Ford generations focus. All .

First generation (1998-2005)

The origin of the Focus is considered by many to be the appearance at the Geneva premiere of the concept version of the Ghia concept, held in 1992. The "cart" under the name CW170 was kept secret for a long time. A considerable number of foreign auto journalists believed that it would be the base for the Fiesta, but they were wrong. The American company has prepared the base for a completely different car - the Focus.

It's no secret that most of the "photohunters" spied on the novelty, so their work appeared already in 1995. Of course, at that time it was not easy to talk about the details of the upcoming car, but any of its lines spoke of the unstoppable trend of cardinal changes.

The latest design philosophy was first "registered" officially on the modest Ka (1996), then on the Cougar (1998) and as a result, what many expected happened! Ford Focus has been officially introduced.

Interestingly, the name of the car was approved only in the first part of 1998 - almost before the presentation of the novelty. The company's management doubted for a long time whether to leave the name Escort for the new model or change the name, which would correspond to modern changes in appearance. It is not difficult to guess what the Americans chose.

Cardinal changes have affected not only the appearance, but also the interior of the vehicle. Graceful and free lines reminded me a little of the Mondeo, although, on the other hand, they were intertwined with a small Ka. The heavy, fully independent Control Blade rear suspension, which the big brother was so proud of, became the road for the Focus.

Based on this, it was decided to make it according to the type of pressed metal. It is worth recalling that by that time most of the C-class vehicles had semi-independent rear suspension. Auto-journalists greeted the car loudly and with pathos.

The level of comfort and control was appreciated. If we compare the car with competitors (Opel Astra and Volkswagen Golf 4), it was clearly better. Of the tangible “trump cards”, the American novelty received a fairly affordable price.

Restyling 2002

The debut Ford Focus 1 family came with four body styles - a 3-door hatchback, a 5-door hatchback, a 4-door sedan and a 5-door station wagon. If we compare the car with the debut generation, then the updated model was really distinguished by the presence of innovations.

The restyled car had modified headlights with integrated indicators and delimited parts. The bumper installed in front did not already have indicators, however, it received an auxiliary plastic overlay. The radiator grille was installed lower, and the “foglights” were decided to be moved.

Optionally, the novelty could have xenon, an audio system with a changer, a navigation system and climate control. They also decided to change the console located in the center - in addition to the shape, they changed the color scheme, introducing several new colors to choose from.

The chairs have changed slightly, other color schemes for body painting have been introduced. On top of that, a new diesel power plant has appeared, based on the European Zetec 1.6 modification.

Specifications

Engine

If we talk about power units, then American company equipped the Focus with an extensive list of engines. From the older model (Mondeo), the car got good motors Zetec-E with a volume of 1.8 and 2.0 liters. From Fiesta - engines with low fuel consumption Zetec-SE with a volume of 1.4 and 1.6 liters.

From the very beginning, the only diesel “engine” on the list of engines was the Endura TDDI, which was the prototype of the Deutz concept version that the company used on cars in the 1980s. Later, in 2002, it was replaced with an improved Ford Focus 1 Duratorq TDCI engine.

Together with the power plants, 4 transmissions to choose from worked. It could be a 5-speed MTX-75 on the “mechanics” (synchronized with 2.0, RS, 1.8 TDCi and 1.8 TDDi), a 5-speed IB5 on the “mechanics” (worked with 1.4-, 1.6- and 1.8-liter gasoline engines), The 6-speed Getrag 285 is also on the "mechanics" and the 4-speed 4F27E on the "automatic" (set on "engines" with a volume of 1.6 and 2.0 liters).

On top of that, Ford has prepared for its own customers a version with a sporty bias. For 1 family, these were 2 charged modifications: ST170 and RS.

Security

In addition to the main consumer advantages, the car presented itself quite well during crash tests. The 1st generation Ford Focus received 4 out of 5 stars from EuroNCAP for driver and passenger safety, as well as 2 out of 4 stars for pedestrian safety. European company tested the five-door 1.6-liter modification.

Sports versions of the 1st generation

ST170

The model came out under the auspices Ford in 2002. Later, the sports car began to be sold worldwide. The charged version differed from the standard modification in its improved appearance and interior, powerful power unit and sporty parameters of the main components.

AT serial production the model lasted until 2004, after which it lost its niche to the full-fledged successor of the 2nd family. The ST series received an atmospheric 2.0-liter gasoline "four", developing 172 "horses". Together with the "engine" worked 6-speed "mechanics". The car was front wheel drive.

Unlike the already familiar modification, the Ford Focus ST170 accelerated to the first hundred in 7.4-8.5 seconds. The maximum speed is at the level of 216-220 kilometers per hour. During an average drive, the engine consumed from 9.1 to 9.4 liters for every 100 km on a combined cycle.

The “heated” car was built on the C170 platform, where there was an independent “walking” scheme in front and behind - MacPherson struts and a “multi-link” with steering function.

Ahead were disc 300 mm brake mechanisms with ventilation function rear wheels Came with 280mm discs. In general, the car was distinguished by sporty notes in the exterior and interior, a fairly strong engine, satisfying dynamics, good equipment, a confident design and an efficient brake system.

RS

The car also came out in 2002. The vehicle was produced at the Saarluis plant until 2004. In total, only 4,501 three-door hatchbacks were produced. Inside the RS (Rally Sport) series, there was a 4-cylinder 2.0-liter Duratec engine with turbocharging and direct injection.

As a result, he allowed to develop 215 liters. s at 5,500 rpm and 310 Nm of torque at 3,500 rpm. They synchronized the work of such a strong "engine" with a six-speed manual transmission, which transmitted torque to the front axle.

It was possible to accelerate to the mark of 100 km / h in 6.7 seconds. Maximum speed - 232 km / h. For every 100 kilometers traveled, the engine required about 10.1 liters of fuel. The "first" Focus RS model was built on the platform of the regular Focus.

The suspension was independent, where MacPherson struts and coil springs were in front, and on rear wheels- multi-link design. If there were ventilated disc mechanisms in front, then they decided to place good old drum devices on the rear wheels.

Appearance Ford Focus RS 1 has a persistent appearance than the "regular" version, an interior with sporty qualities, a strong turbocharged engine, a stable demeanor on the road and pleasant dynamic performance.

Second generation (2004-2011)

For the first time, the second generation of the Ford Focus appeared in the fall of 2004 at the Paris Motor Show. The American experts showed the audience the serial version in 2 bodies - 3-door and 5-door hatchback. After a short time, a 4-door sedan, which was produced as a prototype, was demonstrated at the Beijing Motor Show.

The second version with the name C307 used the C1 "trolley" - exactly the same as the Volvo C40, B50, C70, Mazda 3 and Ford S-Max. The company's management decided to tastefully name the global platform for various purposes - "Global Shared Technologies" - such a name was fully justified.

The suspension, praised in Series 1, was rearranged in the second generation, but with some changes. The body frame has increased in rigidity by 10 percent, which has a positive effect on handling. The size of the novelty has also grown. New vehicle had the function:

  • keyfree;
  • Sun reflective windshield;
  • Adaptive headlights;
  • "Bluetooth";
  • Voice control of the audio system and telephone;
  • Climate control system.

On top of that, the Ford Focus 2 received new transmission in the form of Durashift: 6-speed "mechanics" and 4-speed "automatic". In a stylistic matter new model was made again by analogy Mondeo and Fiesta.

Tangible innovations include interior design materials. Instead of inexpensive plastic, which shone in the debut family, high-quality plastic began to be used. The center console was redesigned to look better and was similar to the Mondeo. Some changes have taken place in the line of power units.

The employees of the enterprise modified the "engines" with a volume of 1.4 and 1.6 liters, and the Zetec-SE power plants were not installed at all. They were replaced by the Duratec family with the famous 1.6-liter Duratec Ti-VCT, which can shut off valves in order to save gas.

After some time, in the updated model, it was changed to a 1.8-liter Duratec. The unique "engines" with a volume of 1.6 and 1.8 liters were changed to Duratec HE. It was taken from the Mazda MZR. The family of diesel engines has also been updated. Two power units: 1.6 l for 90 "horses and 2.0 l Duratorq decided to purchase from the French PSA.

Security

Speaking about safety, it is worth saying that Ford Focus 2 was able to surprise. The car was able to pick up the highest safety scores from EuroNCAP. The American received 5 points for driver and passenger safety, 4 points for child protection and 2 points for pedestrian protection. "Focus" managed to overtake the safety of its own advanced competitors in the face of Renault Megan and Volkswagen Golf.

Restyling 2008

Shown in the fall of 2007 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the updated car began to be mass-produced in December of the same year. The following year, the novelty arrived in dealer centers. New car became a reasonable continuation of the 2 series in the new stylistic branch of the American firm under the name "Kinetic Design".

Based on the last update, the previous version "gave" only the body itself. The back and sides have changed slightly. You could notice door stampings, restyled rear bumper, added spoiler and reshaped exterior mirrors. The front area of the Ford Focus 2 restyling has been greatly changed.

All lighting equipment and body parts were copied from Ford Mondeo- you can highlight the presence of headlights with a broken top line, a raised hood and highlighted wheel arches. In the cabin, a massive silver insert was added between the "wells" of the engine speed sensor and the speed sensor. The motors that were completed on the restyled "Focus" have not changed.

RS 2

The second series of an American sports car with the RS index appeared at the International Motor Show in London in 2008. The following year, they began to mass-produce this "charged" car. The sports Focus had a redesigned “engine” from the ST version, a sports-type body kit and three types of body painting.

Finished producing Ford Focus 2 RS in 2010. Replaced it ford model Focus RS 500, which differed in body painting, slightly different dimensions and a forced motor. We will talk about the RS 500 a little lower. The sports version of the Ford Focus 2 RS was produced only in a three-door hatchback body and was painted in 3 original colors - "Ultimate Green", "Performance Blue" and "Frozen White".

The sports car had an aerodynamic-type plastic body kit with a massive spoiler. Thanks to this, it was possible to achieve a low figure for aerodynamic body resistance, which does not exceed the value of 0.38 Cx. Inside the "RSki" there are 4 seats, and the interior itself was designed in a sporty style with embossed Recaro chairs.

There's also an uninterrupted center console and chunky dials that make it easy to read the numbers. As mentioned above, the sports car had a Duratec engine from the ST version. But power plant Ford Focus 2 has been significantly upgraded, which made it possible to increase its performance.

In fact, it was a 2.5-liter 5-cylinder in-line engine with a 20-valve DOHC gas distribution mechanism, but it had an intake manifold, an improved sequential gasoline injection system and a Borg Warner K16 turbine, in which boost pressure was increased by 2 times.

Such changes made it possible to increase engine power to 305 “horses” at 6,500 rpm, and the torque limit has grown to 440 Nm, held in the range from 2,250 to 4,500 rpm. Now acceleration to the first hundred took only 5.9 seconds, and the maximum speed increased to 263 km / h.

You shouldn't think that this powerful engine"ate" too much fuel - in the combined city mode, the "engine" consumed about 9.4 liters for every 100 kilometers. Based on its already established traditions, the Ford Focus RS was able to retain front-wheel drive, where there was an automatic Quaife limited-slip differential that distributes torque between the front wheels.

Regarding the suspension: it is independent - in front it has a RevoKnucle sports suspension on the McPherson strut platform, which allows you to reduce the load on the struts and increase handling, and a Control Blade multi-link system was installed on the rear wheels, which compensates for horizontal and vertical vibrations of the wheels.

With the help of all the implementations, it was possible to increase the stability of the Ford Focus 2 RS. All wheels have ventilated disc brakes with more reliable calipers. Driving a sports car has become easier - a hydraulic power steering has appeared. In total, more than 11,000 cars were produced.

RS500

In March 2010, the American concern Ford announced that the production of the RS 2 sports car of the family is planned to be fully stopped by the fall of that year. To celebrate this “closure”, the management decided to release a “farewell” limited series of cars in an exclusive version, the circulation of which will not exceed 500 units.

The Ford Focus 2 RS500 differed from its “brother” in body color, a wheel track extended by 40 millimeters and a boosted engine. The limited edition sports car was painted in Panther Black Metallic matte black paint.

Who wouldn't want to ride in "Car of the Year 1999" or be in the role of the unforgettable racer Colin McRae, who conquered the rally tracks behind the wheel of the Ford Focus? Especially considering that the purchase of this car is not associated with sacrifices: a functional and attractive body, an acceptable amount of interior space, quite successful and economical engines. It also encourages you to buy. great suspension, thanks to which the car behaves as if glued to the asphalt.

Unfortunately, most offers secondary market are not in best condition. A few years later it turned out that the Ford Focus 1 has problems with body corrosion.

Carefully check the equipment of the instance you are interested in. Modern appearance does not mean appropriate equipment - even after restyling, a car can have only one airbag and power steering. ABS and power accessories were not included in the list of basic equipment.

There is an opinion that the first generation Ford Focus engines are not suitable for the installation of LPG gas equipment. This is partly true. Plastic manifolds were susceptible to air bursts in the intake tract, but these disappeared with the advent of multipoint port injection. However, this is not a reason to neglect valve adjustment every 40,000 km, which will require about 5,000 rubles.

What can you do yourself?

timing belt

The process of replacing the timing belt in 16-valve 1.4- and 1.6-liter gasoline engines and diesel engines is not too complicated. The repair kit consists only of a toothed belt and a tension roller. In the case of petrol 1.8 and 2.0 liters, two or three rollers are already installed, depending on the year of manufacture and version. The services use a special tool to fix the shafts, but you can get by with "folk" methods. Unfortunately, 1.6-liter Focuses often come to car services with symptoms of poor performance of the power unit. On examination, it is found that the timing belt has jumped one tooth: the engine is running, but it is shaking, and it does not develop full power.

brakes

Replacement brake pads and discs or brake fluid does not require complex operations, special tools and great knowledge. Trouble can arise when trying to replace rusty tubes: practice and additional tools will come in handy to unscrew the rusted tips.

All Ford Focus I have ventilated brake discs on the front axle (minimum thickness 20 mm) and rear non-ventilated discs (minimum thickness 8 mm) or drums ( maximum diameter 204 mm). Brake fluid(about 0.7 L DOT 4) should be changed every two years. The thickness of the pads and discs (a caliper will come in handy) must be checked at least once a year.

Power steering

All the first Focuses were equipped with power steering. Maintenance of the power steering is limited to tightness control (potential leaks - pipeline joints) and periodic fluid replacement.

As a working fluid, 0.5 liters of branded Ford S-M2C195A are used, which can be replaced with a fluid that is close in its characteristics to transmission oils for automatic transmissions such as Transmax Dex III or ATF Multivehicle.

Motor oil

The capacity of the lubrication system for gasoline engines is 3.8 liters for a 1.4-liter engine and 4.3 liters for all others. There are no special requirements regarding the properties of the oil. It is enough to adhere to the class SH (API) or A1 / B1 (ACEA) and viscosity 5W-30 or 5W-40.

In the case of diesel units, it is necessary to prepare 5.6 liters of oil with a viscosity of 5W-30 class CF (API). Since turbodiesels were not equipped with a particulate filter, there are no strict requirements regarding the special properties of the oil. When replacing it, you must also install a new one. oil filter, which in gasoline 1.6-2.0 liters is the same as in diesel versions.

Ford recommends checking the engine oil level frequently and changing it once a year. In addition, there is also a mileage limit - 15,000 km. Given the age of the car and difficult operating conditions, it is better to reduce the recommended oil change period to at least 10 thousand km. The maximum allowable oil consumption must not exceed 0.5 l/1000 km. The distance between the MIN and MAX marks on the dipstick corresponds to: in gasoline engines - 0.75 liters, and in diesel engines - 1.5 liters. In winter, it is better to keep the oil level low, for quick warm-up, and in summer - a high level - for better cooling.

The process of changing the oil itself is simple, and the filter is easily accessible from below. However, do not forget that used oil and an old filter are very dangerous for the environment and should not be thrown into the regular trash. It is advisable to give the waste for recycling. Unfortunately, at present such an opportunity exists only in a small number of cities in Russia.

Cooling system

Checking the tightness and operation of the system must be carried out regularly, preferably at the same time as checking the oil level. Coolant leaks are often caused by the plastic thermostat housing.

Coolant replacement is required after 5 years or 100,000 km. Ford recommends a fluid called Motorcraft Super Plus 2000, but general purpose coolants such as Radicool NF Castrol can also be used.

Note: power units, depending on the type, have different thermostat opening temperatures. The water pump is driven by a drive belt (not timing), which is worth having in the spare parts kit.

The volume of the cooling system: gasoline 1.4 and 1.6 liters - 5.5 liters; 1.8 and 2.0 l - 6.0 l; diesel - 6.5 liters.

Computer diagnostics

Ford Focus of the first generation, as a rule, did not give rise to visits to diagnostic centers. However, diagnostics can be very useful in troubleshooting not only the engine, but also assistance systems - ABS or ESP. To read errors, the universal KTS device, which is available in many car workshops, is sufficient. Therefore, a visit to an authorized Ford service not required. The diagnostic connector can be found near the driver's feet on the panel under the cover.

VIN number

The identification number is located under the windshield (visible from the outside along with information about the number of airbags) and on the floor - at the feet of the front passenger. It is worth noting that according to VIN number, unlike many companies, Ford allows you to learn not only model year, but also the exact date of production: year and month.

Marking:

WFO - manufacturer code (Ford Germany),

body type: A - 5-door, B - 3-door, F-sedan, N - station wagon,

XX - unused characters,

G - country of manufacture (G - Ford Werke Aktiengesellschaft, Cologne, Germany), C - assembly (C - Saarlouis / Langley),

D - (D - Focus),

A - body version (repeat),

W - year of issue (W - 1998, X - 1999, Y - 2000, 1 - 2001, 2 - 2002, 3 - 2003, etc.),

P - month of production (here P is August, but the envy code is from the year of manufacture),

12345 - serial number of the body.

Chassis

Everyone knows about the need to adjust the geometry of the suspension. But in the case of the Ford Focus, the rear suspension must also be adjusted. The process itself is not complicated - for this, there are eccentric bolts on the auxiliary beam that secure the wishbones. Unfortunately, the bolts get very rusty and have to be cut off to adjust. Therefore, before the procedure, it is necessary to purchase new bolts in advance.

The front wheel toe-in must be set to 0 and the rear wheel toe-in to 2.5 mm (tolerance +/- 1 mm). The reason for the departure of the angle of inclination of the wheels (camber), as a rule, is the wishbones of the suspension.

cabin filter

The cabin filter is recommended to be changed once a year. His low price allows you to do it without thinking. The filter can be accessed under the hood, next to the bulkhead (right). To get to it, you must carefully release the latches on the mounting plate and bend up the plastic cover. After replacing the filter, everything falls into place. For all modifications of the model, the same cartridge with a size of 350x167x29 mm is suitable. On the market you can find many alternatives of various brands, both conventional and coal.

Air filter

During the annual Maintenance it is enough to monitor the condition of the filter and clean it thoroughly. You can use a compressor for this. Ford recommends changing the filter every 45-60 thousand km. Fortunately, it is very cheap - only about 250 rubles, so in case of any doubt about its performance, it is better not to hesitate and replace it. The filter has dimensions of 265x147x47 mm and is suitable for almost all power units, with the exception of the Focus ST.

To replace the filter, you will need a socket wrench, which you need to unscrew 4 screws around the perimeter of the housing. During replacement, thoroughly clean the air filter housing with a cloth or compressed air. After installing a new cartridge, pay attention to the location of the seal - a loose or deformed seal does not perform its important functions.

Tires

In models with an engine up to 130 hp. 14" wheels on 5" wide steel rims or 15" wheels on 6" wide alloy wheels are used. Sport versions are shod with 17- or 18-inch wheels. When there are 3 people in the car, it is necessary to set the pressure in the front and rear wheels to 2.2 atm. (0.22 MPa). When fully loaded, it is necessary to increase the pressure on the front axle to 2.3 atm. (0.23 MPa), and on the back up to 3.1 atm. (0.31 MPa).

Lamps and fuses

One of the major changes in the 2001 Ford Focus upgrade was the headlights. In pre-styling cars, one H4 60/55 lamp was used for low and high beams. After that, the H7 lamp was responsible for the low beam, and both 55W for the far H1. The lamps in foglights have also changed: H1 gave way to H11, in ST 170 - H3. Xenon was available as an option.

Access to the headlight bulbs is difficult, but not to the point of hopelessness. First you need to remove the metal latches, then the black cover, and then you can already remove the light bulb. Most other lamps are only accessible after the housing has been removed. Although the glass reflector screws are easily accessible, do not try to unscrew them - another screw is located in the bend and is difficult to get to.

The Focus uses medium sized flat fuses. The color indicates the current that the fuse can withstand: brown - 7.5 A, red - 10 A, blue - 15 A, yellow - 20 A, white - 25 A, light green - 30 A, orange - 40 A. And remember that a blown fuse often indicates a fault that needs to be found.

What breaks in Ford Focus 1?

Even great-looking specimens can further unbalance their owner with quite significant flaws - so a thorough inspection before buying is a must! Compact Ford is not a very reliable car. Its main problem is rather rapidly progressive corrosion, which can be found on the edges of the doors, inside the thresholds, on the suspension elements and on the exhaust system. Particular attention should be paid to the condition of the brake hoses and tubes.

Gasoline units, like Endura diesels, are quite reliable. In Duratorq diesels, the problems relate to a dual-mass flywheel (a resource of about 150 thousand km), a starter, injectors, an exhaust gas recirculation valve (unfortunately, it is combined with an aluminum manifold). The suspension holds up well. Russian roads, and its complete overhaul with original spare parts will cost 60,000 rubles. Repair will be much cheaper if you change only individual elements, and not the entire lever assembly.

Rust attacks from behind

While the front of the body resists corrosion quite well, its rear end gives up quickly. Wheel arches and rear sills are the most common spots for rust. If you come across a copy without traces of corrosion, buy it without hesitation. The rear ones are also subject to corrosion. brake pipes which is not safe.

Corrosion on elements such as stabilizer roll stability or brackets for attaching stabilizer bushings, not terrible. But it would seem simple replacement stabilizer gum turns around using a grinder and a set of new staples.

Steering gear

The steering mechanism can become a source of trouble in two cases: fluid leakage at the junction of pipelines and the appearance of play in the steering rack. The recovery process, depending on the service, will require from 10 to 30 thousand rubles.

fuel injection system

A diesel engine with a common rail system can cause many problems. One of them: the failure of the high pressure pump leaks in the fuel system.

Branch pipe turbine-intercooler

The problem is only the TDCi version. Loss of power and soot from exhaust pipe have a prosaic reason - damage to the pipe connecting the turbine to the intercooler (intercooler). The branch pipe (about 1000 rubles) can be replaced independently.

Multi-link suspension

The secret of the ideal behavior lies in the multi-link rear suspension. Unfortunately, the cost of its maintenance is quite high. After 100,000 km, backlash appears in the chassis. The transverse arm often breaks first. Replacing several levers is not so expensive, but you will have to fork out well for all the elements - more than 10,000 rubles. It is not so easy to dismantle the levers of the system - the bolts are strongly seized.

Engines: typical problems and consumption?

Petrol 1.4 and 1.6 of the Zetec-SE family

The aspirated 1.4-liter debuted earlier in the Fiesta, where it had slightly different parameters. The 1.6-liter engine came out with the Focus. While the 1.6-liter does its job satisfactorily, the 1.4-liter is too weak. This is reflected in the market - there are few cars with a 1.4-liter engine. Both motors are reliable and easy to operate.

The 1.6-liter unit was developed by Japanese Yamaha engineers. It is an aluminum block with a 16-valve head, mechanical valve clearance adjustment and timing belt. power unit guarantees the perfect compromise between performance and fuel consumption. He is content with 8 liters of fuel per 100 km, which is not bad compared to competitors, but far from sensational. Sprint to hundreds takes 11.3 seconds. In the upper rev range, the motor lacks elasticity - it takes more than 20 seconds to accelerate from 80 to 120 km / h.

The 1.6 liter engine, even with high mileage (more than 200,000 km), does not show any signs of wear. In particular, there are no leaks and abnormal oil consumption.

Petrol 1.8 and 2.0 of the Zetec-E family

This offer is for the more demanding. Structurally, these are modernized engines of the old Mondeo. The Zetec-E family has a more massive design than the SE, also due to the cast-iron cylinder block. With frequent high loads, this solution extends the service life. The crankshaft and connecting rods in the engines are the same. The difference in working volume is achieved due to the diameter of the cylinders.

Engines do not have typical faults, which are more often random: ignition coils, small oil leaks (defective oil plugs at the beginning of production), the need to flash the ECU (also the first Focuses).

The 1.8-liter version consumes an average of about 9 liters per 100 km, and acceleration to 100 km / h takes just over 10 seconds. The 2-liter engine is even less economical, but allows you to enjoy driving. For lovers of fast driving, sports versions of the ST 170 and ST are provided. The latter has an advanced design with forged pistons and connecting rods.

Diesel 1.8TDDi

The Endura series engines are Ford's first direct injection diesel engines. They use a classic rotary injection pump. The difference in power is achieved through different software. These diesels are forced to reckon with loud and not pleasant work. The reward will be - low cost of operation: the unit does not cause too much trouble. The weakest version accelerates to 100 km / h in 14.5 seconds and burns an average of 5.5 liters of fuel.

Diesel 1.8 TDCi Duratorq (Common Rail)

In the 21st century, fans of diesel engines cannot stand increased noise and weak dynamics. The standard is diesel with direct injection using a common rail system, which is supplied with fuel by a high pressure pump. Then it enters the injectors, which dose the fuel supply to the cylinders with incredible accuracy. The injection system is supported by an efficient variable geometry turbocharger and charge air cooler. It also uses a dual mass flywheel. Fortunately, Duratorq only complies with Euro-3 standards, and therefore does not have particulate filter. The result is good performance and reliability. The Endura cannot compete with the Duratorq in this respect. However, fuel system Delphi 1.8 TDCi is sensitive to fuel quality. In the event of its failure, the cost of repairing the injection system will be about 10,000 rubles.

The weakest version reaches 100 km/h in less than 12 seconds, the more powerful version in less than 11 seconds. The Duratorq's elasticity is better than the Endura's, with the former taking just 10.5 seconds to accelerate from 80 to 120 km/m, while the latter takes 22 seconds. Curiously, the average fuel consumption is more modern engine above - about 6.5 liters per 100 km. In addition, it requires a lot of troubleshooting costs.

The blocks of both TDDi turbodiesels are made of cast iron, which in the late 90s was considered a sign of deep conservatism. Motors have become a further continuation of the old and problematic 1.8 TD. Fortunately, the engineers managed to get rid of the main drawback - two timing belts. New engines have received a more reliable solution. Lower pulley crankshaft puts the injection pump into operation through drive chain which theoretically has a lifetime. The camshaft, in turn, is connected to the injection pump by a short strap. The belt is able to withstand more than 100,000 km. But remember that if it breaks, the valves will be destroyed, so you should not forget about replacing. Attention! During production, Ford changed the shape of the gear teeth. camshaft and belt. Please read the service documentation before replacing.

A typical drawback of Focus turbodiesels is a small resource of a dual-mass flywheel (about 100,000 km). The total cost of repairs can be about 25-30 thousand rubles. Another common problem is air leakage due to cracking of the intake pipes. The cost of repair is about 1000 rubles.

Transmission

AT model range two mechanical (MTX-75 and IB5) and one automatic transmissions were used. Both manual transmissions are quite reliable, and IB5 is the most widely used. With age, the likelihood of wear of bearings and synchronizers increases. In IB5, 5th gears are the most vulnerable. They are located at the very top of the box, and therefore the loss of even 200 ml of oil "dehydrates" the gears, which leads to wear.

Automatic transmission 4F27E is quite hardy, and before the first major repair it lasts 250-350 thousand km. Solenoids are handed over a little earlier - on a segment of 150-250 thousand km. This is one of the few machines that can be sorted out without removing it from the car. For overhaul it will take about 50-70 thousand rubles.

American version

The Focus, after the first generation Mondeo, became Ford's next international model. In the US, he bore the name ZX3, ZX4, ZX5. The number means the number of doors. From a purely practical point of view, the American versions of the Focus are of little interest. Compact with a weak two-liter engine and automatic transmission gear is gluttonous and too expensive for a low level of comfort. Corrosion is another problem that is common to most inexpensive cars that have survived ocean voyages.

Sales market: Russia.

The Ford Focus sedan (DFW) is a practical and at the same time comfortable option, which was considered by Russian buyers both as a family and corporate car. It was released after the three- and five-door hatchback models (in February 1999). The Ford Focus has redefined the concept of the popular golf class. The design of the car that replaced the Escort is a bold combination of shapes and lines, dubbed the "new edge". The Control Blade multi-link rear suspension used in the Focus offers improved elasto-kinematic characteristics, increasing the stability and controllability of the machine. With a stylish and memorable appearance and excellent driving performance, Focus has become a truly striking novelty. And on the Russian market - also the first car of foreign production, which received a permanent residence permit at a domestic assembly plant. But this happened later, in 2002, at first, cars from Europe (Spanish assembly) were offered for Russian buyers. Sedan modifications were offered with gasoline engines of 1.6 liters (100 hp), 1.8 liters (115 hp) and 2.0 liters (130 hp).

The interior of the Ford Focus sedan demonstrates the same bold approach to design as the exterior of the car. At the same time, it is distinguished by a solid finish, pleasant and high-quality seat upholstery, and well-thought-out ergonomics. Convenient large doorways. Four configurations were offered: Ambiente, Comfort, Trend and the top version of Ghia (only with powerful 1.8 and 2.0 engines). The basic version includes only the essentials: power steering, adjustable steering column, budget fabric trim and seat trim, mirrors in sun visors. The Comfort package will offer front power windows, air conditioning, central locking with remote trunk opening, pockets in the front doors. The Trend version gets richer with fog lights, aluminum wheels, a leather-trimmed steering wheel and trunk lights. The most expensive version of the Ghia will offer rear windows, an adjustable pause wiper, a driver's seat with an armrest and electric height adjustment, and a velor interior. The optional winter package added power mirrors and heated mirrors, seats, windshield, washer nozzles.

The Focus I sedan was officially supplied to the Russian market starting with a modification with a 1.6-liter engine with 100 hp. A more powerful 1.8-liter unit has a reserve of 115 hp. The most powerful engine - 2.0-liter - produces 130 hp. In this top modification, the manufacturer claims a top speed of 201 km / h and 9.3 seconds of acceleration from standstill to “hundreds”. Depending on the modification, the first generation Ford Focus could be equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic. Fuel consumption in the combined cycle lies in the range of 6.8-9.4 l / 100 km. The volume of the Focus fuel tank is 55 liters.

The first generation Ford Focus sedan has front-wheel drive, MacPherson-type independent front suspension and multi-link rear. Steering effect manifests itself in fast turns rear suspension. Ventilated disc brakes at the front are combined with rear drum brakes for the initial modifications, and with 1.8 and 2.0 engines, disc brakes are also installed at the rear - the developers considered this combination to be more optimal. In all modifications, the car received a power steering. Body dimensions Focus sedan I are: length - 4382 mm, width - 1700 mm, height - 1440 mm. The wheelbase of 2615 mm provides a good supply of space for rear passengers (for comparison, we note that the Ford Escort predecessor in the sedan had dimensions of 4290x1679x1349 mm, and wheelbase measured 2520 mm). The minimum turning radius is 5.45 m. The trunk volume of the Focus I sedan is 490 liters.

In the initial set Ford sedan Focus 1998-2001 offered an adjustable steering column and airbags for the driver and front passenger, belts with pretensioning and load limiting systems. In the top configuration, the ABS system and side airbags were offered. In the 1999 Euro NCAP crash test, the car received four stars (out of five) for driver and adult passenger safety and two stars (out of four) for pedestrian safety.

Ford Focus has become a bestseller since its appearance on the Russian market, and a kind of benchmark for a family car. Due to the wide distribution of this model, there are no particular problems with maintenance, finding spare parts, etc. It should be borne in mind that the Focus was often used as a corporate vehicle. All characteristic diseases of the machine are well studied and this information can be easily found on the Internet. Restyling Ford Focus took place in 2001.

The Ford Focus car, which replaced the "", began to be produced in Germany and Spain since 1998. A year later, the production of this model began in the United States and Mexico, and in 2002, Focus entered the assembly line of a new plant in Vsevolzhsk, Leningrad Region.

The car was offered with sedan, hatchback (three- and five-door) and station wagon bodies. Ford Focus equipped gasoline engines 1.4 (75 hp), 1.6 (101 hp), 1.8 (114 hp) and 2.0 (130 hp). The 1.8-liter turbodiesel had versions with a capacity of 90 and 116 hp. with.

In 2002, "charged" versions of the Focus ST170 and Focus RS appeared. The ST modification had a two-liter Duratec engine under the hood, boosted to 170 hp. with., and "ereska" (of which only 4500 pieces were produced) was equipped with a turbocharged version of the same engine with a capacity of 215 hp. with.

With the advent of the second Focus in 2004, the production of first-generation cars in Europe ceased, and in the American market this model was sold until 2007. The American version of the car was equipped with petrol engines of 2 and 2.3 liters.

2nd generation, 2004

The second generation car debuted in 2004. Appeared in the list of body types, and under the hood of European versions - new turbodiesels with a volume of 1.6 and 2 liters. On the Russian market, the Ford Focus was offered with petrol engines 1.4 (80 hp), 1.6 (100 and 115 hp), 1.8 (125 hp) and 2.0 (145 hp), as well as 1.8 -liter turbodiesel with a capacity of 115 liters. with.

"Hot" hatchback Ford Focus ST received a five-cylinder turbocharged engine with a volume of 2.5 liters, and in the RS version, the same engine was boosted to 305 “horses”. In 2010, a 345-horsepower special version of the RS500 was produced with a run of 500 cars.

In 2008, the model was restyled and was produced in this form until 2011. In China, this car is still produced by the Changan-Ford joint venture.

For the American market, from 2008 to 2011, the Michigan plant produced its own version of the Focus, which was significantly different from the European one. This car had versions with sedan and coupe bodies, and under the hood it had a two-liter engine with 140 hp. with.
