"BMW E46" coupe: restyling, specifications and review. Series E46 "BMW": features and reviews BMW M3 E46 price and equipment

The charged M-ki of BMW are quite famous all over the world, but one of the legends of the BMW M3 E46 requires a separate review. This is not just a sports car, but a whole story, let's take a closer look at its characteristics and parameters.

During this period, several modifications and variants of the car were released. According to the body form factor, the BMW M3 E46 is available as a coupe and convertible, other options are excluded. To understand what this beast is capable of, let's consider in detail the configuration, characteristics and parameters of the M3 E46.

The exterior of the legend BMW M3 E46

The third series of BMW cars boasts both power and compact dimensions. But still, the M-series is much faster and more attractive than the standard version. It often happens that inexperienced motorists confuse M-ki with standard BMW 3-Series equipped with an M-package.

The seemingly charged BMW M3 E46 is more aggressive than the usual trio. The front part can be distinguished by a different hood, the front grille air intakes are smaller. Curved lines do not stretch from the upper grille of the BMW M3 E46, but from the bumper itself, thus looking closely you can see where the first differences are. The hood of such an M-ki also changed its shape, immediately behind the classic emblem of the company, a convex part appeared, which is characteristic only for the M-series. Such a convex part of the hood is made in order to place a large intake manifold under the hood.

The most rare is the BMW M3 E46 GTR, designed specifically for racing in the English Channel. For the racing season, the manufacturer produced only 16 of these cars, and at the end, another 10 of these cars were produced, especially for the road. A characteristic difference of this version of the BMW M3 E46 is the presence of gills ( additional holes for engine ventilation), as well as the presence of a factory spoiler behind.

The optics of the BMW M3 E46 also differ in shape, the side part on the wings is not directed upwards, as before, and the insert under the optics has a wave shape, but the classic two lenses in one headlight were left unchanged. The front bumper of the BMW M3 E46 also has an aggressive look, its central part is occupied by an additional grille for blowing the engine. On the sides of the bumper, there are fog lights and, in some trim levels, turn signal repeaters.

The side part is typical only for the BMW M3 E46, the first is more expressive and extended wheel arches, a hole was placed right behind the arches for better aerodynamics, and the first M3 nameplate was placed on it. From the front arch to the rear optics, the BMW M3 E46 is divided into upper and lower parts. Another difference can be considered smaller side mirrors, in comparison with the standard configuration, which has them much larger.

As already mentioned, the body type of the BMW M3 E46 is only available in a two-door version. The entire length of the loaded coupe is emphasized by the molding, from the front to the rear arches, it is at this distance that the bumpers are installed. In front of the molding, on the front fender, there is a repeater, which is also installed only on the M3.

The rear of the BMW M3 E46 is pretty much the same except for the special editions of the M3 E46. The trunk lid is curved at the end, like a small spoiler, such a curve has a positive effect on the car's aerodynamics. The rear optics of the BMW M3 E46 is the same as in the regular model. But there is a difference in rear bumper, the central lower part is occupied by two cutouts for paired exhaust pipes. They create pleasant and characteristic sound charged BMW M3 E46.

In terms of dimensions, a charged BMW M3 E46 will depend on the configuration and body type. You can divide them into coupe, convertible and exclusive model CSL. First, consider the dimensions of the BMW M3 E46 Coupe.

  • compartment length - 4492 mm;
  • width - 1780 mm;
  • height M3 E46 Coupe - 1372 mm;
  • clearance - 110 mm;
  • wheelbase - 2731 mm.
Slightly different dimensions in the BMW M3 E46 Convertible:
  • convertible length - 4488 mm;
  • width is - 1757 mm;
  • the height is less than in the compartment - 1370 mm;
  • wheelbase Convertible option - 2725 mm;
  • ground clearance - 110 mm.
The third option and very rare - BMW M3 E46 CSL:
  • length E46 CSL - 4492 mm;
  • vehicle width - 1780 mm;
  • CSL height - 1365 mm;
  • wheelbase - 2729 mm;
  • ground clearance M3 E46 CSL - 110 mm.
Despite the body configuration, the dimensions of the BMW M3 E46 remained compact, the sporty style is clearly visible both in the coupe and in the convertible. BMW roof M4 E46 can be solid or with hatch. For the BMW M3 E46 CSL, the roof will be made from SMC material. The basis for such a sports car was branded 18 "alloy wheels or 19" for the BMW M3 E46 CSL configuration.

By color, the body of the BM M3 E46 is painted in a huge number of shades, but the most common are:

  1. silver;
  2. black;
  3. dark blue;
  4. blue;
  5. dark grey;
  6. yellow;
  7. red;
  8. snow white.
Exclusive variants or special body colors are not excluded. By weight, the three variants of the BMW M3 E46 are different, and most of them depend on the configuration of the car itself. The curb (gross) weight of the BMW M3 E46 coupe is 1500 kg (2000 kg), the convertible is 1660 kg (2100 kg), and the CSL coupe is 1385 kg (1800 kg). The trunk also differs slightly in volume, since the roof in a convertible must be folded, the boot of a convertible is 300 liters, and the coupe in any version is designed for 410 liters. Fuel tank BMW M3 E46 in any configuration 63 hp

At first glance, a charged BMW M3 E46 can be confused with the usual triple, but those who know what the M-series is will say unequivocally that this is not at all different cars both externally and under the hood.

Salon BMW M3 E46

If the exterior of the BMW M3 E46 had characteristic differences at first sight, then the interior of this car is not much different from production model, except perhaps the presence of inscriptions (nameplates) M-series. The front panel is made in a classic style, and much will depend on the selected vehicle equipment. This refers to the presence and location of interior devices such as a TV, climate control panel and other decor details.

At the very top of the front panel there are two air ducts, under them, depending on the configuration, an audio system panel with a display, or a conventional audio system, can be located. In most trim levels of the BMW M3 E46, a climate control panel is located under the audio system, but it is possible that an air conditioning panel can be located (an example of this was the BMW M3 E46 CSL model). A small set of buttons for controlling heated seats, blocking door locks and other functions are located very close by.

An ashtray and a cigarette lighter are hidden even lower behind the panel, a gearshift lever is located nearby, according to the BMW M3 E46, the gearbox can be robotic or mechanical. On the lever itself, regardless of the type of gearbox, there will be an M-series marking in the form of the letter M. Four power window control buttons are located to the right and left of the lever. Despite the fact that all BMW M3 E46 are two-door, glass is provided for the second row, and for them, as it should be, power window buttons.

A mechanical handbrake was placed behind the gearshift lever, at that time little was known about electromechanical ones, and reliability left much to be expected. Quite comfortable and thought out, made an armrest, with a recess for the handbrake. No less interesting is the driver's seat of the BMW M3 E46, the instrument panel is updated, but still in the style of BMW. The central part is occupied by a speedometer, a tachometer, a fuel level and engine temperature sensor, indicators are placed under the instruments. At the bottom of the BMW M3 E46 speedometer, the characteristic marking of the M series, three inclined stripes of blue, blue and red, as well as the letter M.

The steering wheel of the BMW M3 E46 does not differ much from the standard model, in addition to the characteristic M-series lettering at the bottom of the third spoke. On the two side spokes, there are control buttons for mobile communications, cruise control and an audio system. Behind the wheel, there are knobs for switching turn signals, controlling wipers and other functions of the BMW M3 E46. To the left of the steering wheel is a standard control panel for lights and foglights. It is worth noting that for the BMW M3 E46 convertible since 2001, paddles were installed behind the wheel for shifting gears.

If we talk about the seats of the BMW M3 E46, they are made with the sporty style of the time, streamlined on the sides below and above, with a comfortable fit and the possibility of electronic adjustment. The rear row of seats, although designed to fit two passengers, can accommodate a third one, but not for long-distance trips.

As a material for the upholstery of the interior of the BMW M3 E46, high-quality leather or suede was used (for the CSL configuration). In terms of color, the interior is very diverse, much depends on the taste and desire of the buyer of those times. Most often you can find a leather interior in colors:

  • black;
  • beige;
  • grey;
  • yellow;
  • dark blue;
  • Orange.
The option of exclusive interior decoration in red or yellow is not excluded. For such a car as the BMW M3 E46, personal orders of a combination of different color shades were also possible.

Conclusion about the interior of the BMW M3 E46 - in comparison with the usual three, there are no special differences, except for the inscriptions indicating that the model belongs to the M-series and the front sports seats.

Specifications BMW M3 E46

Talking about the appearance or interior of the BMW M3 E46 is one thing, but the whole highlight of the legend lies precisely under the hood in the technical characteristics of the car. From the usual configuration, this charged car is distinguished by new engine, modified suspension and lighter weight, as well as improved aerodynamics.

Under the hood of a charged BMW M3 E46, a six-cylinder naturally aspirated engine is installed. It was this unit that was recognized as the best engine of its size for 5 years, from 2001 to 2006, although it first appeared in 2000. The volume of such a BMW M3 E46 engine is 3.2 liters. For the coupe and convertible, the power of such a unit is 343 hp, with a maximum torque of 365 Nm. The CSL package, due to its light weight, can produce 360 hp. and a maximum torque of 370 Nm.

In all variants of the BMW M3 E46, the L-shaped engine is located longitudinally, and the drive is transmitted to rear wheels. An all-wheel drive version was not provided and was not produced. Paired with BMW engine The M3 E46 is fitted with a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.

Despite some general technical BMW specifications M3 E46, fuel consumption for each configuration is different for the body. A regular coupe and a light version of the CSL with a manual transmission consumes 17.8 l / 100 km in the city. Outside the city, consumption is 8.4 liters, and in the combined cycle, 11.9 liters of gasoline will be required. The maximum speed of a conventional BMW M3 E46 coupe is 250 km / h, while the car can overcome the first hundred on the speedometer in 5.2 seconds. The maximum speed of the lightweight CSL is the same - 250 km / h, but it can overcome the first hundred in 4.9 seconds.

Convertible BMW M3 E46 with a manual transmission in the city will eat 17.9 liters per hundred, outside the city - 8.8 liters, and the combined cycle will draw 12.1 liters. The maximum speed is still the same - 250 km / h, acceleration to the first hundred will take 5.5 seconds.

As soon as you press the gas pedal, the BMW M3 E46 bites into the asphalt and takes off as quickly as possible, according to technical indicators the car takes the maximum speed to failure and only the electronic limiter does not allow the arrow to be set to the maximum mark. Craftsmen bypass the limiter in various ways, and then the maximum speed increases to 280 - 300 km / h.

The rarest is the unique equipment of the BMW M3 E46 GTR. First released in February 2001, the car is equipped with a 4 liter V8 engine. The power of such a unit is 380 hp. at 7000 rpm of torque. The engine is paired with a six-speed manual gearbox, with a special sports dual-disc clutch and an M-differential that can change the degree of blocking.

Also from the technical specifications, the unique BMW M3 E46 GTR has acquired a rigid chassis. In addition to all this, this car was noticeably underestimated to improve aerodynamics and better downforce.

Regarding the suspension of the usual BMW M3 E46, it has been updated and modified. Front shock absorber struts based on a triangular lever, there is also a transverse arm and transverse stabilizer. Rear suspension based on telescopic shock absorbers, with a transverse stabilizer, paired with a coil spring and a trailing arm. The braking system, both front and rear, is based on ventilated disc brakes.

It is these technical characteristics that emphasize and distinguish the BMW M3 E46 from other BMW 3 Series cars in the back of the E46. Many BMW fans can say that this charged coupe, although in years, is in no way inferior to modern similar cars in its class in terms of technical indicators.

BMW M3 E46 security systems

The charged BMW M3 E46 cannot boast of a large set of security systems, since at that time there were simply no special electronic systems in comparison with modern security systems. But as for that time, the equipment is not bad enough.

The standard set of the BMW M3 E46 includes the DSC dynamic control system, the EDFC engine control system. There are two front and two side airbags for the front passenger and driver, as well as seat belts for front and rear passengers. Rumor has it that a rear-view camera was installed on trim levels with a display, but there is no reliable data from the manufacturer.

BMW M3 E46 price and configuration

You can buy a BMW M3 E46 in Russia. It is not a rare model and quite a few of these sports coupes were brought to the territory of the Russian Federation. The price will depend on the configuration and condition of the car, since many have been around for a year, and those who drive have seen more than one race on the road. A rare case when the BMW M3 E46 has been preserved in perfect native condition, as a rule, the price for such instances is twice as expensive as the regular M3 E46.

By configuration, the BMW M3 E46 coupe is most often found, but convertibles can also be found, other modifications can be found much less frequently. BMW statistics show that over the entire period, 10 road cars of a special version of the BMW M3 E46 GTR were produced, the price of one such GTR at that time was 250,000 euros. Lightweight version of CSL released in 1400 copies. Today, a used BMW M3 E46 can be bought in Russia at a price of 2,500,000 to 3,000,000 rubles.

For a used BMW M3 E46 coupe and convertible, the price in Russia is from 700,000 to 1,000,000 rubles. There may also be tuned models from the manufacturer, they can be more expensive than 1,000,000 rubles. According to BMW, for the period from 2000 to 2006, 84,383 copies of BMW M3 E46 cars were produced in the coupe and convertible body, excluding special versions.

To date, the BMW M3 E46 is considered one of the best and most successful models among 3-series cars. The combination of bodywork and technical characteristics showed excellent aerodynamic characteristics and speed capabilities. The owners of such BMW M3 E46 say that the car is worth the money that they ask for it.

Video review and history of the creation of the BMW M3 E46:

New govnoblog in my performance, about the next model of the BMW brand, dear;)

The BMW E46 is the fourth generation of the BMW 3 Series. It was launched in 1998 and discontinued after 7 years, in 2005. It will be replaced by the new E90 ...
In 1998 E46 appeared on all automotive markets world except for the USA. Initially, the car was produced only in the sedan. The range of engines at the beginning of production was quite extensive. In 1999, the coupe and touring were put on the conveyor. And in 2000, the range of bodies was fully equipped with new ones: a convertible and a hatchback. E46 was a very popular car in all markets. The most successful year was 2002, this year they were able to drive 561,000 E46s. The car is still considered the standard of class D. And so we went ...

In 1998, the E46 debuted, which replaced the old E36. The main emphasis of the engineers was placed on reducing the weight of the car and increasing the rigidity of the body relative to its predecessor. E46 turned out to be 70% stiffer than E36. Also, the car turned out to be much lighter than its progenitor, this was facilitated by the widespread use of aluminum in the design of the machine. The E46 had an ideal axle weight distribution - 50/50, which contributed to excellent handling. Initially, the E46 was only available as a sedan. The engine range looked like this: 318i (1.9 - 118 hp), 320d (2.0 - 136 hp), 320i (2.0 - 150 hp), 323i (2.5 - 170 hp), 328i (2.8 - 193 hp). All modifications could be equipped with both automatic and mechanics, except for the 320d, which was equipped with only 5MKPP.

In 1999, two bodies were added to the range: coupe and touring. The station wagon engine line was identical to the sedan, but not the coupe. Diesel engines were not put on it in principle ( Diesel engines appeared on the coupe only after restyling in 2003) and also the coupe did not receive a new 1.9 liter engine, which they began to put on the sedan and station wagon from this year. This motor was 8-valve and developed a power of 105hp, designated by the index 316i. And another novelty in the range of engines was a 2.9-liter diesel engine with a capacity of 184hp, a modification with this engine received the 330d index and was aggregated only with a 5-speed manual transmission. All modifications, except for the diesel 320d and 330d, could be ordered, both with automatic transmission and with manual transmission. But the US, to put it mildly, is not a pearl, they just started selling 323i and 328i. Neither budget sedans, neither the coupe nor wagon was available for the American market.

In 2000, another variant of the body appeared: a convertible. In America, sales of coupe and station wagon started. The range of engines was supplemented with 3-liter engines and an all-wheel drive transmission. But there was confusion, some motors were installed only on the sedan / station wagon, while others were not installed on the coupe and convertible, and something was discontinued, confusion. And so, in order, all modification options at the end of 2000.

Sedan / station wagon modifications:
316i (1.6 - 105hp) 5MT/4AT
318i (1.9 - 118hp) 5MT/4AT
320i (2.0 - 150HP) 5M/5A
320d (1.9 - 136hp) 5MKPP / 5AKPP
325i (2.5 - 192hp) 5MKPP/5AKPP
325xi (2.5 - 192hp) 5MT/5AT
330i (3.0 - 231hp) 5MT / 5AT
330xd (2.9 - 184hp) 5MT/5AT
330xi (3.0 - 231hp) 5MT/5AT

Coupe modifications:
318Ci (1.9 - 118hp) 5М/4А
320Ci (2.0 - 150HP) 5M/5A

Convertible modifications:
323Ci (2.5 - 170HP) 5М/5А
325Ci (2.5 - 192HP) 5М/5А
328Ci (2.8 - 193hp) 5MKPP / 5AKPP
330Ci (3.0 - 231hp) 5MK/5AKPP

And this year, M Power GmbH presented the BMW M3 Coupe. The Cabrio was introduced a year later. The car was equipped with a 3.2-liter in-line six. For different markets, the M3 had different capacities. So for Europe, the car's power was 343hp, and for America it was already 333hp. respectively. The standard M3 was equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission, for an additional fee it was possible to install a 6-speed robot (SMG II). Unlike its predecessor, the M3 E46 shares very few parts with the standard BMW 3 Series. From the exterior, 2 cars have only doors, a roof and a trunk in common. The M3 has wider fenders, sporty bumpers, side sills, mirrors, a protruding hood, spoiler, fender gills emblazoned with a proud M, and four tailpipes.

In 2001, the treshka received a facelift. The most notable innovation was the face lift. The sedan/station wagon received new engines: 316i (1.9 - 116hp), 318d (2.0 - 115hp), 320i (2.2 - 170hp), 320d (2.0 - 150hp), 325i (2.5 - 192hp), 325Xi (2.5 - 192hp), and from the old line only one modification 318i (1.9 - 118hp) remained unchanged, which by the way remained only on the sedan. The coupe and convertible received a budget version of the modification. The model was called 318Ci (2.0 - 143hp). In addition, the coupe received an additional 2 diesel engines: 320Cd (2.0 - 150hp) and 330Cd (3.0 - 204hp).

Same in this BMW released a sports package that emphasized the sportiness of the car.

This year, BMW released two new models: the BMW E46 Compact, which had a slightly different exterior than the other models of the third family. Initially, the model was equipped with 4 engines: 316ti (1.8 - 116hp), 318ti (2.0 - 143hp), 320td (2.0 - 150) and 325ti (2.5 - 192hp). In 2004, a modest diesel was added to them: 318td (2.0 - 115hp). By the way, ti did not mean at all that the engines were turbo, as many thought (including me, by the way, I confess: D). It was a message to the past, a tribute to its old progenitor who bore the name of the BMW 02 Series.

And the second model became new BMW M3 GTR. This car was specially created for the American ALMS races, where it was opposed by the Porsche 911 GT3. The straight six was replaced by a V-shaped eight, which produced 380 hp. In the racing version, the engine produced 450hp. According to homologation rules, it is necessary to produce 10 cars, which BMW successfully did. In their first year at ALMS, BMW Motorsport won the championship. But the next year the organizers changed technical regulation, which made M3 GTR racing ineffective, and although this ended the ALMS participation of the eight-cylinder M3, this fact did not really affect her racing career. In 2003, under the banner of the Schnitzer Motorsport team, two M3 GTRs returned to endurance racing. They dominated the 2004 and 2005 24 Hours at the Nürburgring. They occupied the first two lines. That was the end of the M3 GTR's career in motorsport, but since then, many private teams have been involved in the VLN series, stuffing this engine under the hood of regular M3s.

In 2002, the public was presented with the BMW M3 CLS Concept (18 prototypes), which was a lightweight version of the M3. And new version body kit, called the M-Sport Limited. In general, the year somehow turned out to be mean for the E46.

Chronology of the model The bmw e46 chassis became the fourth generation of models of the third series, and at the time of its appearance - the youngest in the BMW family of cars. At the very end of 1998, new items were introduced as 1999 models, at first only in the form of 316i sedans. 318i. 320i. 3231 and 328i (modifications 316-320 were not offered to non-Americans). If the predecessors in the body were boyishly a little angular, although more sports enthusiasm was visible in these forms, then the cars on the chassis that replaced them, with a general similarity of architecture and nuances, looked much more solid.

The slightly larger roundness of the bmw e46 forms did not visually add "fat". Against, design work clearly indicated increased muscle mass. And although at first the superiority of the mechanical filling compared to the previous generation did not look overwhelming, the difference in bodies was reflected not only in aesthetics. New design became tougher by 70%, but, despite the dominant corporate ideology of creating cars for the driver, added space rear passengers.

BMW E46 suspension features

Structural features of the suspension, brakes, and steering remained largely unchanged, but the track became wider, and increased use of aluminum in suspension components reduced unsprung masses. The wheelbase extension allowed the engine to be moved slightly back to maintain the same weight distribution as the E36 (50/50). In the same year, only a little later, the line was replenished with coupe (Ci) and station wagon (Ti) bodies.

In 2000, the MZ coupe modification appeared in the E46 range, which was supplemented in 2002 with a convertible, the E46 Compact 3-door hatchback, designed for the European, Asian and Australian markets, was introduced for 2001 model year.

After a ten-year break in 2001, all-wheel drive modifications were returned to the range of cars of the third series. The transmission used in Xi modifications constantly transmits torque to all four wheels with a ratio between the front and rear axles 38:62 respectively. Both the front and rear differentials in the Xi E46 are free, the dynamic stabilization system (DsC) and traction control systems (Asc + t), which control the rotation of the wheels through the brake system, interfere with their work.

Under the hood of the BMW E46

In 2001, 2.5- and 3-liter engines appeared under the hood of sedans (respectively, the designations of modifications also changed: 325i and 3301). Both the standard equipment of the machines and the list of options were constantly replenished. And for sedans and station wagons of the 2002 model year, restyling was carried out. These cars received different headlights and fog lights, slightly modified plastic side surfaces of the body, a wider decorative grille, new front bumpers and hood for the 325i and 330i. Restyling was not limited to appearance. The range of gasoline engines has also been upgraded.

The most noticeable change was the appearance on 4-cylinder engines of the Valvetronic system. In the suspension, the characteristics of the springs, shock absorbers have changed and the rear rubber-metal hinges have become stiffer. Increased gear ratio steering mechanism (the rotation stroke from lock to lock became half a turn less).

Not particularly long, but rather cloudless life of the E46 platform on the assembly line did not end overnight. The first to leave the line in September 2004 were the 3-door Compact hatchbacks, the youngest in the range. Moreover, they passed the production baton not to classmates on the next platform, but to the machines of the new series of BMW models of the first.

In mid-2005, sedans were gradually replaced on the assembly line by cars on the E90 chassis. The station wagon in the same year gave way to the E91 cars. Coupes and convertibles remained in production longer than others until the E92 coupe and E93 convertible appeared at the end of 2006. The modifications of the bmw e46 M3 lasted the longest in production, until the new Emka coupe based on the E92 was shown at the Geneva Motor Show in the spring of 2007.

BMW E46 operating price

In most cases, maintenance-free devices are disposable consumer goods. BMW cars are not among this number, but they are tedious Maintenance do not name. The machine will require exactly as much attention as it takes to understand that you own not a plastic soap dish, but real equipment that loves lubrication, cleanliness, and so on. Since the constructive basis of the motors was worked out on its predecessor, cars on the E 46 chassis are practically free from most children's sores.

The epic with nikasil, which is destroyed by sulfur-containing gasoline, did not affect cars in the 46th body. By the time they appeared, the manufacturer had already switched to cast-iron cylinder liners in b-cylinder power units. In general, the reputation of "sixes" is higher than 4-cylinder engines. And it's not so much a stereotypical understanding of what a real BMW should be. Although the mileage of both power units with proper operation, it reaches 300 thousand kilometers, the “fours” are harder to endure the increased temperature load of the urban operation cycle.

Already by 100 thousand kilometers, a leak may appear through the crankshaft rear oil seal (-€ 20, plus work - € 60). If the engine overheats, this problem may occur, of course, earlier. Large engines are spared from this misfortune, and if you do not forget about controlling the oil level (in order to protect yourself from wear of hydraulic lifters and timing chain tensioner), changing it in a timely manner (€ 1b0 - € 190 every 10-12 thousand km in urban operation), replacing spark plugs for at least 30 thousand kilometers (€ 60 per set) and cleaning the injector, then they do not annoy the owner.

All versions of transmissions - automatic, semi-automatic (SMG) and pure mechanics - work flawlessly. Only among the latter, assembled in the first year of production, there were instances with difficult inclusion of the first gear. In mid-1999, the defect was eliminated, and problematic units were replaced under warranty.

BMW E46 spare parts prices

Depending on the driving style, clutch replacement will be required after 100-200 thousand km, but there are cases when even after 250 thousand km the unit is still quite functional. Its replacement will cost about €400 - €500 (including the price of parts and labor). The beauty of the BMW suspension is in its kinematics and carefully selected characteristics constituent parts. Her walkability does not exceed the average among her classmates. This is especially true of the front McPherson. Stabilizer struts are the fastest to rent (from € 80 with work). Before the first hundred thousand mileage, shock absorbers die (€600 for a complete replacement of the front struts, plus €120 - €150 for work), ball joints (€250 - €300 for a complete assembly with a lever) and supports rear pillars (€30).

On our roads, knocks may appear as early as 30-50 thousand km. This will be the culprit steering rack. The knock gradually progresses, but without a criminal increase in backlash in the mechanism.

The factory specification does not provide for its adjustment, despite the fact that there is a support nut in the design. A new rail will require about €1000. The tie rod ends (€70) are extremely durable. Front brake pads(€80 - €150) may require replacement around the 30,000th run, rear (€80 - €100) - about 60 thousand km. Replacing each pair will cost around €50-€60. According to the factory instructions, the front ventilated brake discs require replacement when installing every third set of pads (80-100 thousand kilometers). The factory kit will cost about €200. Parts from third-party manufacturers are one and a half times cheaper.

Prices for spare parts and maintenance work on BMW service E46 is not cheap. Nevertheless, the operation of these machines cannot be called ruinous due to the extremely low probability of an unscheduled visit to a car service. From the first years of production, BMW gasoline three-wheelers have constantly been at the forefront of the ranking for the least number of breakdowns.

Prospects BMW E46

Today, the range of prices for the bmw e46 is quite large. The cost to a small extent depends on the modification and configuration of the machines. First of all, it is due to their condition, which statistically differs greatly for cars manufactured in 1998 and 2005. The latter, if looked after, can be considered practically new specimens, since we are talking about BMW, but the price tags are more humane (Table 2).

In our market, most E46s have a 318i badge on the trunk. This modification, especially with a 2-liter engine installed in post-styling versions, has an ideal balance of properties for everyday use, but will also please the owner when actively working with the accelerator pedal.

Feels like Bavarian horses are much faster than those raised in other parts of the world. The credit for this belongs, of course. the distribution of torque over the operating range of engine speeds and the finest tuning of the interaction of other engine and transmission systems. And look for additional horsepower in four cylinders is less profitable than in six. Sixes are not only more reliable, but they also provide more tuning opportunities.

However, many Western companies have a lot of parts for modifying 4-cylinder engines. Up to turbo kits (€2500 – €4000) and compressors (€4500 – €5000). Together with the range of stock and third-party components, it is possible to build turbo variants with non-standard geometric dimensions bowels of the power unit. But all the same, the same operation (and for almost the same money - about €10,000 - €15,000 for a full range of work) with 6-cylinder devices is more efficient.

tuning BMW E46

The manufacturer manufactures crankshafts for "six-pot" blocks, in which the piston stroke is 66 mm, 75 mm, 84 mm, 85.8 mm, 86 mm, 89.6 mm, 91 mm and connecting rods with a length of 135 mm, 140 mm and 145 mm. The range of pistons allows you to build both atmospheric and inflatable versions. The compressor or turbine, placed on the prepared bottom, allows you to remove more than 450 liters. With.

Charged to the maximum tuning version of the "three rubles" cost more than the Japanese. But the main thing is that the balance brought by BMW engineers to the absolute can be lost. driving performance, scrupulously calculated in the same emkas or Alpina'x, which are for most reference points in tuning. The offer of suspension parts, body kits, and tuning accessories is simply HUGE. Only factory rims about 20 options. Stylistics of E46, both in stock and in modified versions, in part external tuning for many years it has been elevated to the legislative rank for owners of cars of various brands.

LEGENDARY MODELS IN 46 BODIES

BMW E46 M3 – EMKA

In general, it is believed that cars with the letter "M" stand apart in the model a number of BMW due to significant differences from the standard series. But it was not always so. A radical revision of the basic design in the design of the M-modification began to be practiced precisely when working with the E 46 platform. Unlike its predecessor, the E 46 MZ was structurally significantly different from a conventional car. In the exterior, the M3 had only doors, a roof and a trunk lid in common with standard cars.

The grilled front fenders of the M3 were wider. Bumpers, sill skirts, mirrors, hood, tail spoiler, 4-pipe exhaust - this and much more was original in the M3. The interior was also different. The most notable innovations are the steering wheel, sports seats and instrument cluster. The motors were different.

In addition to the standard range (strange as it sounds) of MZ coupes and convertibles, the M-Tech department produced special limited editions of cars. The M3 GTR, which appeared in early 2001, had a 4-liter V8 power unit under the hood, which produced up to 450 hp in a racing version. With. (331 kW). The civilian modification of this engine was more modest - 385 hp. With. By the way, these civilian versions were actually almost full-fledged combat vehicles that were sold to satisfy the rules of the American Le Mans series (AMLS) competition.

Moreover, due to the same rules, which oblige to ensure the implementation process within 12 months, each of the 10 copies, exhibited at a price of a quarter of a million euros each, was sold only to selected customers. In the future, the requirements of the rules became even more stringent, but BMW no longer followed them. It was too expensive to produce another hundred cars and a thousand "eights". GTR MZ continued to participate in competitions no longer for the sake of legal victories (this was impossible due to constant fines), but for the sake of improvement technical concept. Today, such specimens are the lot of collectors who enter into close circles of people from motorsport.

BMW E46 M3-CSL

Limited BMW series E46 M3 CSL was released in the second half of 2003. In accordance with the decoding of the abbreviation CSL (Coupe Sport Lightweight), when designing this modification, special attention was paid to weight reduction. A lot of carbon fiber parts were used on the car: roof, front bumper, rear diffuser, door upholstery and center console, in addition, the installation of a trunk lid molded from fiberglass composite was aimed at reducing weight, thinner rear window, lightweight exhaust system, racing seats. The model also lost soundproofing and side airbags.

In the basic configuration, there were no air conditioning and an audio system (however, they were saved in the options). CSL differed from ordinary emok not only in weight and appearance elements. Engine power in Z60 l. With. reached with different camshafts, valves, a modified intake manifold and an engine management program. The control program for the SMG II gearbox has been changed. the suspension received thicker anti-roll bars, springs of increased stiffness. Subsequently, some of the components of the CSL version (19-inch wheels, suspension springs, steering rack, brake mechanisms and some others) received a registration in the Competition package (in the USA) from standard MOH. In Europe, a similar package for emoks was called M-Sport (it is often confused with the Clubsport package for regular E 46s, which included parts from standard M models).

The BMW 3 series e46 debuted in 1998 as a 4-door sedan. A year later, a station wagon (Touring) and a coupe joined it, and in 2000 a convertible. A little later, the Compact version appeared, which was accepted with coolness. At one time, the handling and behavior of the BMW 3 e46 were recognized as reference in the class. Troika has often won ratings that assess the degree of compliance with customer expectations and satisfaction.

The restyling carried out in 2001 brought small changes to the front of the body (headlights were updated) and the engine range. The production of the BMW 3 e46 was completed in 2005. However, the sporty version of the M3 was still on the price lists for a while.

Electrician

The electrical part of the machine is quite complicated and the owners are usually not happy. In the cabin, in the risk zone, is the comfort unit responsible for the electric windows, mirrors and sunroof, and the air conditioning control unit. Their failure can punch a serious hole in the budget - even now such a unit is worth several hundred euros, and it makes sense to do repairs rather than change to a used one or a new one.

Climate control can also please with failures of damper actuators, fan speed control unit and burn-out displays. The interior fan motor is also not the most reliable part: if the car is often stopped, and the cabin filter is not carbon and changes infrequently, then the chances of its failure are high, but in any case, its “life expectancy” is no more than four to five years.

The sunroof drives, and the wiring of the doors and seats are also brought down. Moreover, the failure of the wiring of the latter often causes airbag errors. Also, pillows often fail due to the failure of the “snail” of the steering column, so if the buttons on the steering wheel do not work every time, then this is an occasion to check for the presence of an “airbag” light bulb and bargain a bit. In the back of the car, the lamp boards most often suffer, where corrosion finishes off the conductors, and the wiring of the trunk lid - here the lighting board is combined with the electric lock button and fails all at once. Fortunately, craftsmen repair these components, and there is no need to change them entirely. Even on cars with standard parking sensors, the harness usually rots at the point of exit from the body, do not rush to change the sensors.

The real trouble is under the hood: the front wiring harness is very capricious, which entails problems with the operation of numerous sensors and, worst of all, the cooling fans. Another problem is the wiring to the ABS sensors and the sensors themselves, and at the same time the body position control system on cars with xenon headlights: all the wiring under the bottom of the car is at risk, and the sensors fail due to damage due to icing or simple exposure to the Moscow “cocktail” ".

Finally, a small surprise from BMW. “Smart” ignition keys are used here, they contain all the data about the operation of the engine, the configuration of the car, mileage, and so on. It is enough to give the key to the dealer, and he will be able to find out all important information about the car. Unfortunately, such advanced keys are not cheap, so try to buy a car with a complete set of them. In addition, the key has a battery that is recharged when the key is inserted into the ignition. In rarely used keys, the battery is discharged, so the car will not always start correctly with it, and even more so it will open easily.

Of course, a complex key breaks easily too. But even without that, it can fail - after all, batteries do not last forever, and after 6-7 years of operation, its charge lasts only for a few hours. It is especially unpleasant if such a “surprise” lies in wait for you far outside the city, where there are no services, no shops, and the car cannot be opened in any other way.

There is a 2020 size battery inside, but in order to replace it, you will need a hacksaw and a new key case, and after replacement you will need “initialization”, which takes place when the key is inserted into the ignition switch. There are options for keys in which you can replace the battery without using a cutting tool, but if the battery is dead, then you still cannot do without initialization. The moral is simple - change the batteries in the keys on time and keep the lock cylinders in working order.

Design and interior

Even today, the "troika" is still admired. Perfectly tailored proportions look great even after a while. The eye-catching Coupé is the most aggressive in appearance, and the Compact version is a little out of line with the flawless lineup.

The equipment of the basic versions of the BMW 3 series e46 (especially the first batches) is rather modest. Fortunately, over time, the number of available gadgets has grown rapidly. The interior is typical of the Bavarian school: everything is subordinated to the driver, and the quality of the finishes is excellent. Dashboard clear and concise. The fabric upholstery of the seats is well preserved even with high mileage.

The only pity is that inside is quite crowded. Transportation capabilities can be assessed as average - the trunk volume is 440 liters, and in the station wagon version - 435-1345 liters. The most modest hold in Coupe (410 liters), Compact (310 liters) and Convertible (300 liters).

Engines

The range of engines is very rich. It includes several petrol and diesel engines working volume from 1.8 to 3.2 liters. In addition to the rear-wheel drive BMW 3, xDrive all-wheel drive versions were also offered, which were equipped exclusively with 6-cylinder units. The base motor does not have excellent dynamics, so it is only suitable for calm drivers. A good choice would be 2-liter modifications with a capacity of 143 and 150 hp. These motors allow you to fully reveal the capabilities of the car, without tangible costs. But you can get real driving pleasure only with the “sixes” under the hood. In addition to good dynamics, the owner also receives acceptable reliability.

In the diesel range, 3-liter engines with 184 and 204 hp deserve recommendations. They provide decent dynamics and are considered quite reliable. The disadvantage is the higher cost of operation and expensive spare parts.

transmissions

With automatic transmission, everything is fine if you have a car with a European-assembled ZF box. A five-speed ZF5HP19 is installed here, and sometimes there is a stronger 5HP24, like on the “five”, and often such a box was installed instead of 5HP19 no longer on the conveyor. These are very common automatic transmissions, and at the same time reliable. Their service has long been mastered, and even if the box is in poor condition, it will be fixed. In addition, the choice of contract units is more than decent. Change the oil, change the gas turbine engine in time, avoid overheating, and it will last as long as on e 39 high speed on the highway in the summer.

Unfortunately, not only ZF boxes were installed on the car: the GM5L40E automatic machine was also installed on the “three rubles” along with all the engines, from the in-line “four” to the three-liter diesel engine. In addition to more “imposing” behavior with almost no engine braking and slower shifts, this automatic transmission proved to be much more capricious than the German one.

By the way, the box is far from being found only on American-assembled cars, because this box was also assembled in France. What exactly is installed on the car can only be found by the VIN number, looking under the bottom for reliability - often the boxes were simply changed to ZF in case of problems, but usually it is found on pre-styling cars with four-cylinder engines.

The main problems of this automatic transmission are an extremely vulnerable petal oil pump, which does not like high speeds, hot and dirty oil, and a jammed automatic transmission thermostat, which leads to rapid wear of the gas turbine engine linings and no less rapid wear of the valve body solenoids. In addition, the friction clutches themselves are rather weak, they are also often worn out with a run of less than a hundred thousand kilometers and tend to fail during “annealing”. In general, there are enough problems, besides, what BMW owner doesn't like fast driving? And it is contraindicated for this automatic transmission.

Suspension BMW E46

No one doubts that the “three-ruble note” is capable of delivering great pleasure from fast driving, but ... The fact is that the BMW suspension was created for use on good roads. But on our asphalt with a lot of joints, seams, potholes and uneven tram rails, the car is already perceived as harsh. And, of course, all this also affects reliability. And quite strongly. If in Germany the BMW 3 Series in the back of the E46 covers about 100 thousand km without breakdowns in the suspension, then we have to repair it after 25-50 thousand km.

Most often, stabilizer struts fail (about $ 50 apiece with work), as well as silent blocks of levers. Silent blocks can be repressed once, but then you have to buy a new lever, which, together with the subsequent adjustment of the wheel alignment, will cost almost $ 350 (BMW now supplies slightly modified lever designs for parts, which have become more reliable). It would be nice to check the shock absorbers (they are enough for about 100 thousand km), because replacing all four at a branded service station will cost $ 700-800.

But the rear suspension, surprisingly, almost does not require attention. What can not be said about the steering. And if the need to replace the steering tips (about $ 100) should not be considered as some kind of crime, then the play in the steering rack should alert. The fact is that adjusting the rail does not always help (they don’t do this at all at a branded service station), and replacing a part will cost more than $ 1000. And you need to be prepared that sometimes this operation has to be carried out every 2-3 years! As for the brakes, the pads (they are disc on all wheels) must be changed after 30-50 thousand km. They go along with ABS sensor and cost $80-100 per set.
EXCURSION

* For the first time, the BMW 3 Series appeared back in 1975 (E21 body). However, BMW sometimes says that the history of the third series should be traced back to 1966, when the first compact BMW 1600-2 was introduced. Under the hood of this two-door sedan was a 1.6-liter engine with 85 hp. The price of the car at that time in Germany was 8650 marks.

* "Treshka" in the back of E21 was produced until 1982, after which it was shown new model with index E30. The car has become somewhat larger than its predecessors, and also received new powerful engines.

* In 1985, BMW launched the 325iX all-wheel drive modification with a 6-cylinder 2.7-liter engine with 122 hp. In the same year, the fastest version of the "treshka" was also shown - the M3 with a 200 hp engine. (sometimes 195 hp).

* In 1986, they began to produce a very beautiful convertible based on the BMW 3 Series, and a bit later the Touring station wagon appeared.

* In 1991, BMW stopped producing most modifications of the BMW 3 Series in the back of the E30, as it was replaced by a new model - the BMW 3 Series in the back of the E36 (the E30 was made until 1993 in the form of convertibles and station wagons) . The third E36 series had many body modifications, because in addition to sedans and station wagons, a convertible, coupe and 3-door hatchback (Compact) were produced.

* Seven years after the debut of the E36 (in 1998), it's time to introduce the next model. BMW 3-series of the new generation received the designation E46. Initially, the car was produced in the form of a coupe and a sedan, but to date, the body range also includes a station wagon, coupe and hatchback. Naturally, there is also a version of the M3 (coupe or convertible), which was shown in 2000. This car has a 3.2-liter engine with 343 hp. And in 2003, BMW introduced a modification of the M3 CSL with a lightweight body and a 360 hp engine.

* In 2001, the BMW 3 Series was restyled. Modernized cars can be recognized primarily by the headlights, which have become completely transparent (before, the “turn signals” were yellow). In addition, in 2001, many new modern engines began to be installed under the hood of the three-ruble note.

Feedback from Slava, the owner of the 1999 BMW 3 318 sedan

“I bought my swallow back in 1999, as soon as I turned 20 years old. What we didn’t see with her: rust, oil problems, and machine breakdown. In general, for her age she was normally preserved, and I think there were not many problems. Compared, for example, with the cars of my friends who did not live even 5 years. When people ask me why I bought a BMW 3 E46 and not a Mercedes W 140, which was popular in those days, I say that I reviewed the Boomer. In his youth he was wildly pissed off. Nothing to regret. Now the fourth series has been released, in the coupe body. I'll take it here."

BMW is one of the most famous German brands around the world. And one of the best-selling cars of the eminent BMW is the E46. BMWs of this series liked and still like buyers for many reasons. Someone falls in love with a car at first sight, without driving, and someone, once having tried it, cannot stop. There are many opinions on this matter, but everyone unanimously agrees with the statement: "There is something catchy in this series." Consider the main characteristics and features of these German "beauties".

A bit of history

The year the sedan car appeared was 1998. It replaced the outdated E36 series. The very next year, in 1999, a station wagon body and an E46 coupe appeared. BMWs of this series were incredibly popular. In 2002, a record number of cars of this series were sold - more than half a million units. There were also convertible and hatchback bodies. And, of course, a sports version with the M3 index was produced on the basis of the E46.

3 years after the start of production, the E46 sedan was modernized. During the restyling, the headlights and bumpers were changed, and other more advanced power units were added. Similar changes affected other bodies of the popular series.

BMW 3 series E46 existed until 2006. Then came the 90th series. The most unpopular was the hatchback body, followed by the station wagon. In general, this BMW series was very successful. Over the entire period of its existence in production, more than 3 million pieces have been produced and sold. The series was produced not only at the main factories in Germany, but also in South Africa, China, Egypt, Indonesia and even in Russia.

Variety of species according to characteristics

A distinctive feature of BMW has always been a rich selection of modifications within the series. This was no exception for the E46. BMW in the sedan was the most popular, so for her the choice of characteristics is especially large. Only petrol versions of the E46 sedan were 12, plus 6 models were equipped with a diesel power unit. Such a wide variety was determined, first of all, by a wide range of installed engines. The smallest engine size of the 3rd BMW series is 1.6 liters; and the largest is 3.3 liters. However, the 3 liter petrol car has the largest power of 231 "horses", maximum speed at 250 km / h and the shortest acceleration time - up to 100 km / h in 6.5 seconds.

If we take the station wagon body, then 14 types of power units are found here, which together gives 17 varieties of BMW E46. Car engines vary in the range of 1.6-3.3 liters. The fastest motor for a station wagon is the same M54V30 with a power of 231 “horses”, accelerating to hundreds in 6.8 seconds. It should be borne in mind that sports engines from the E46 M3 series were not installed on this body, as well as on the sedan. There were installed 2 engines with a volume of 3.2 liters and a capacity of 343 and 360 "horses", respectively. The more powerful of them could accelerate the car to 100 km / h in just 4.9 seconds.

The three remaining bodies of the series, namely the coupe, convertible and hatchback, carried the same set of engines under the hood. At the same time, sports engines were installed on the coupe body - E46 M3, and a smaller unit (3.2 liters) could stand on a convertible. The hatchback had the smallest set of installed engines. Either one of three petrol or one of two turbodiesel options could be installed here.

E46 series engines

A car of any brand can be described and characterized from different angles. Consider one of its main components, namely the engine. As for the 46 BMW series, there were more than a dozen of them.

The first cars of the series were equipped with a choice of:

  • M43 for 105 and 118 "horses";
  • M52 with a capacity of 150, 170 and 193 liters. With.;
  • diesel M47 with 136 "horses" on board;
  • diesel M57 for 184 liters. With.

A couple of years later, the cars went for restyling, and new engines appeared: N42, N45, N46, M47N, M54 and M57N. The new generation of units was distinguished by high reliability with unchanged German quality. A separate position is the engines for E46 M3 - S54 and S54N. Their sporty character is confirmed by 343 and 360 “horses”, respectively. Aggressive sporty style was emphasized by the overall look of the M3 coupe. "BMW" E46 diesel, which could compete with many famous brands of the same middle class, nevertheless, lost to its gasoline sports versions.

Gearboxes for E46

BMW cars of the described series had both a mechanical and an automatic unit for gear shifting. And if with mechanical boxes everything is more or less clear, as for the automatic transmission, there are nuances. The fact is that if the unit was produced by a well-known by a German company ZF, then everything is fine. These five-speed boxes I have a large resource of trouble-free work. For many of them, an oil change is not provided. But, as practice shows, the car falls into the hands of a motorist at the very time when its factory life in Germany ends.

The main rule in the operation of an automatic transmission is a timely oil change, when worn, the torque converter of the box should be changed, and if possible, you should not overheat. Overheating can be especially difficult if a powerful 3-liter engine is installed on the car, it is hot outside and you want to drive. It's just worth remembering that overheating the box significantly reduces the time of its operation, and sometimes leads to breakage.

In addition to the ZF automatic transmission, a 5HP24 and GM5L40E box was installed. The latter had a lot of negative reviews, due to the more "capricious" work and the rapid wear of parts on high revs. Very often, it literally "ended" during high-speed maneuvers. There is such an automatic transmission on earlier 4-cylinder BMW E46. Engines for such boxes are more suitable for low-speed ones.

The quality of the chassis "BMW E46"

What can you say about the E46 suspension? "BMW" is initially a durable car, and elastic suspension on the front on the racks, and on the rear on the levers only adds comfort and stability. Do not forget that in the 46 series there are mandatory all-wheel drive cars. These, of course, are not SUVs, here all-wheel drive plays the role of increased reliability when driving on snow-covered streets and good unpaved rural areas of European quality.

What should I pay attention to in the running gear? The front lever of the rear-wheel drive E46 has a non-separable ball joint, despite the fact that it practically does not wear out. The way out here is to install a non-standard lever or to remake an existing one in such a way as to change ball joints from all-wheel drive cars. AT all-wheel drive ball joints problematic front arm immediately collapsible. Among the other elements of the front suspension, stabilizer struts fall into the risk zone, everything else is very reliable.

AT rear suspension things are even better. Here, ball bearings, as well as the so-called floating silent blocks, occasionally wear out. In order not to have problems with cardans and gearboxes, it is enough to inspect them regularly. Oil is added to the bridges as needed, and it is better to change it every 100 thousand km. Contrary to popular belief about irreplaceable oil, it is better to play it safe. After all, in fact, changing the oil is much cheaper than repairing the bridge.

Body questions on E46

If you got into a BMW for the first time, there is a good chance that you will like everything. The contrast will be especially noticeable after transplantation with domestic car. It's really very convenient here. It looks just as good as it is used. Panel "BMW E46" is made of plastic, but high-quality plastic. Initially, in any configuration, the E46 is equipped with air conditioning and electric windows. For extra money, an even greater number of various options were installed. Panel "BMW E46" is made of plastic, but high-quality plastic.

Everything would be just perfect if it wasn't for weaknesses. And a new car has plenty of them. We will analyze the main points that you should pay special attention to when buying. One of the main problem areas, especially for cars before modernization, is the fastening of the front shock absorber supports. With frequent driving on bad roads in these places, due to constant stress, severe wear and cracks appear. This is especially bad for the right cup, where the serial number of the body is stamped.

Another place where excessive wear and tear can occur is in the front mount at the rear subframe. Among the shortcomings of the body, there is a small amount of space in the back. Despite the fact that, compared with the previous body, E39, there is more space, it is still not enough. The trunk is also small if we consider the E46 as a family car.

In general, the BMW E46 body, the photo of which is located above, has a large margin of safety and resists corrosion for a long time. A car can bring much more problems in terms of the electrical part.

Surprises on "electrics" from E46

Like any other car from BMW, the E46 has an advanced electrical system. There are a large number of sensors and electronic components. At the same time, the weak point in the "wiring - sensor" system is occupied, oddly enough, by wires. Harnesses are especially affected engine compartment. It happens that due to a wiring fault, the cooling fans fail. Therefore, in the case of the BMW E46, sensors are not always the cause of the breakdown. Before changing any the electronic unit, you should carefully check the wiring.

A lot of problems can be delivered by "smart" ignition keys. The E46 has two, main and spare. The whole trick that you can suffer from without knowing the nuances is that the keys only charge when they are in the ignition. The built-in battery is not supplied separately, plus, after replacing the key, it is necessary to go through initialization. All these events are not cheap, so you should alternately use both keys, watching the charge level.

In the cabin, the air conditioning control unit and the power window and mirror control unit may fail. The BMW E46 stove has a heater motor, which is also at risk. You may get the impression that the E46 is just a "wreck" that should not even be considered. But it's not. The fact is that “weak” places are indicated, most often failing. On a single machine, there may not be any problems at all. For example, the car was regularly serviced and stored in a warm garage.

How to choose the best option "BMW E46"

In order to choose the best option for your favorite BMW E46, the reviews of which exceed all expectations, you should know the following main points.

1. When choosing an engine, it is better to give preference to 6-cylinder units. At the same time, given that the more powerful the motor, the greater the likelihood of more severe exploitation. Do not be afraid of "eating up" engine oil. For E46 with mileage, topping up 0.5 liters of engine oil for every 1000 km is considered the norm. If oil consumption increases, it is worth contacting the service. If possible, you should not choose a car with N-series engines. These high-revving units, on the one hand, save fuel consumption. On the other hand, they overheat the engine, which leads to early repairs.

2. BMW of any brand should not be afraid of automatic transmission. In some cases automatic transmission gears last longer than mechanical ones. Its reliability is really high, while the oil in the box still needs to be changed. Moreover, only high-quality products should be poured. Repair of the same box translates into a round sum. Moreover, for the automatic version, it can even be cheaper than for the “mechanics”.

3. When choosing a car, do not rush. Knowing the options for weak points, you should explore all the possibilities and check the car in all possible conditions.
