Subaru Legacy (third generation) - Subaru Legacy (third generation). Not the brightest, but a star: the experience of owning a Subaru Legacy III Subaru legacy 3rd generation

Despite the fact that the Subaru Legacy sedan was never sold in Russia in gigantic print runs, the car was respected in our country. The main reason for the low sales runs was the high cost of the car, and it, in turn, was due to the high technical level and reliability.

True, 4 years ago, after the cessation of production of the 5th generation, the car left our market. But with the launch of the restyled 6th generation Subaru Legacy, the prestigious japanese car returned to Russia. And it's time to get to know him in more detail.

Model history

Compared to many Japanese car models, the Legacy model is relatively young. Its first generation appeared in 1989 year. The car was outwardly nondescript, but at the same time it had advanced technical stuffing. Boxer engines were installed on the car, with a volume of 1.8 to 2.2 liters. At the same time, the most powerful EJ22 engine developed a power of 280 hp. With. In addition, a four-channel ABS was installed on the car, adaptive suspension and other "chips" of prestigious models.

Subaru Legacy first generation

But the main feature of the model was an all-wheel drive transmission, which at that time was installed exclusively on SUVs. This option has led to increased controllability of the machine.

However, due to the poor appearance, the first Subaru generation Legacy in our country was practically unknown. At that time, none of the companies officially sold cars in our country, and gray dealers ignored the car because of the high price. Although single cars can be found, even now.

Second generation models appeared in 1993. Naturally, the right-hand drive version appeared first, but the left-hand drive version appeared 2 years later - in 1995. This model, perhaps, is known to all motorists, because the car was sold with us officially and in quite decent quantities.

Subaru Legacy second generation

The car retained the philosophy of the previous generation, but at the same time its appearance was much nicer. This and official sales determined the success of the car in our country. The exact number of cars sold could not be found. But even visually, on the roads, they met more than often.

One of the "chips" of the second generation was the all-wheel drive suspension, which was installed exclusively on all variants of the model. True, front-wheel drive Legacy was sold in the Japanese islands and in small quantities came to us in the Far East.

third generation was released in 1998 in Japan. The car entered the world market only after 2 years, in 2000. Modernization was quite traditional. Appearance has not changed radically. The 1.8-liter engine was removed from the model, but a new three-liter power unit was added. There were a number of other changes, but we will not describe them. The main thing to say is that the model did not repeat the success of the second generation, and these cars were sold much less.

The model stood on the assembly line for a relatively short time, and in 2003 it was replaced by the next generation.

Subaru Legacy third generation

fourth generation Legacy has been on sale since 2003. The car has radically changed its image. On the technical side, there were also serious changes. Powerful turbocharged engines began to be installed on the car. In addition to power units, almost all vehicle systems have undergone modernization.

As for Russia, despite the fact that the car was officially sold with us, it did not receive much popularity.

Subaru Legacy fourth generation

Fifth generation release started in 2009. Compared with other generations, this generation in Russia is as little known as, for example, the first generation. Cars, although officially sold in our country, are rarely seen on the roads. In total, about 150 copies were sold annually. This was due, first of all, to the high price of cars, and not because of any technical problems.

Fifth generation Subaru Legacy

Given this situation, sixth generation which appeared in 2014 year, it was decided not to sell in Russia. However, in the Far East, directly, the car is imported and sold in quite decent quantities. It seems no less than 150 cars, which were previously sold officially.

After assessing the situation, the Japanese realized that they made a mistake, and the car still has good potential and needs to be returned to the market. Especially Subaru Outback, based on Legacy, as it was sold, and is still being sold.

In 2017, the sixth generation underwent a planned restyling, and then it was decided to return it to the Russian market. And we will consider it in more detail.

Sixth generation Subaru Legacy

Appearance

Despite the fact that this is just a restyling, appearance Japanese sedan has changed significantly. The radiator grille has changed shape and increased in size, which gave the car solidity. The headlights have become a wonderfully complex shape, but at the same time they fit very well into the exterior. By the way, they are LED on the Japanese sedan.

The front bumper seems to be without any special frills, although the large fake ventilation ducts on its sides are also aimed at creating the image of a solid car. And this is not surprising, because such a powerful market player as Toyota Camry appears in the competitors of the sedan.

Front view of the sixth generation restyled Legacy

Since the second generation, the Subaru Legacy has been famous for its harmonious side view. And the sixth generation is no exception. Clear compasses carved wheel arches, moderately protruding trunk, everything is harmonious and fine.

Compared to the pre-styling model, you can see that, for the sake of modern automotive fashion, the sidewall lines have become more chopped and clear.

Side view of the Legacy before restyling

The rear view of the updated sedan has changed little. The taillights have been slightly reduced. And most importantly, now they are fully LED.

Rear view of Subaru Legacy 6 generation

As for the rear bumper, it is now more modern with an integrated exhaust system.

Rear dimensions of the new Subaru Legacy

Summarizing the impressions of the appearance, it must be said that, despite all the updates, it remained old-fashioned and, it seems, the youth will not really like the appearance of the new Legacy.

In conclusion, about the overall dimensions.

dimensions

By tradition, the dimensions of the updated car have become larger than before. True, quite a bit. For example, the length has increased by only 5 mm, the width has increased more, by 60 mm, the height is the same by 5 mm. In this way, the dimensions of the new Subaru Legacy are as follows:

  • Length - 4800 mm;
  • Width - 1840 mm;
  • Height - 1500 mm;
  • Ground clearance Subaru Legacy 2018 - 150 mm;
  • Wheelbase - 2750 mm.

Interior and interior equipment

The Japanese engineers decided not to radically change the front panel. But some changes that made it more modern were still made. First of all, the restyled Subaru has got a new steering wheel. The scales of the speedometer and tachometer have acquired deep stylish tunnels. And between them is a small 5-inch display, which displays information about the operation of engine systems.

The front panel of the new Subaru Legacy

A large 8-inch multimedia system monitor is located on the center console of the car. Below it are clear and understandable scales for controlling the climate system. The sporty style of the sedan is emphasized by new sports pedals.

8’ LCD display of the new Subaru Legacy

As for the materials from which the interior of the Japanese novelty is made, they are of the highest quality. And most importantly, in all configurations, the interior of the new Legacy is leather, which is not surprising, given who the Japanese sedan is going to compete with.

The trunk of the sedan is very spacious, its volume is 506 liters. If you fold down the rear seatbacks, cargo volume will be much more.

luggage compartment new Legacy

Equipping the Japanese sedan with various electronic systems, in all trim levels, is very rich. The new Legacy has:

Security systems

Except electronic systems responsible for the safety described above, there are still 8 airbags on the car:

  • Driver's;
  • Passenger;
  • 2 side airbags;
  • 2 knee airbags;
  • 2 side pillows-curtains on the windows.

Technical filling

There is only one power unit for the Japanese novelty, 4-cylinder boxer, 2.5 liters, brand FB25. This engine can be considered outstanding and it needs to be told in more detail.

Engine

This motor appeared as the deepest modernization of the no less legendary power Subaru unit EJ253.

With the advent of aluminum cylinder blocks, it was noticed that the reliability of the motors suffers, since it is not possible to achieve the same resource as that of cast-iron heads. However, engines with aluminum heads had a much lower mass. Subaru engineers very elegantly solved this problem. They left the aluminum block, but at the same time it was lined with cast-iron sleeves, 3.5 mm thick. Thus, it was possible to achieve the reliability of cast-iron motors and the mass of aluminum. In addition, the engine received pistons with new friction-reducing skirts.

This engine has pretty decent power, despite the lack of turbocharging. It is 175 liters. With. The torque of this motor is 235 N * m at 4000 rpm.

Subaru FB25 engine under the hood of the new Subaru Legacy

Subaru Legacy fuel consumption with these powertrains is:

  • In the city - 10.1 l / 100 km;
  • On the highway - 6.2 l / 100 km;
  • In the combined cycle - 7.7 l / 100 km.

Other specifications

This power unit is aggregated with only one gearbox– 8-speed CVT variator.

The power steering on the car is electric. The suspension of all wheels on the new Subaru Legacy is independent, MacPherson type in front, and double wishbones in the rear.

Wheels on a car with a diameter of 18 inches. And the car itself is designed to install rubber size 225/50 R18. Brakes on all wheels are disc, ventilated. The handbrake of the car is electric.

Complete set

For the Japanese novelty, only two trim levels are provided:

  • YI Elegance;
  • YN Premium ES.

Let's analyze them in more detail.

Equipment YI Elegance
  • Lane control systems;
  • Intelligent cruise control with radar;
  • Cornering lighting systems AFS;
  • Systems automatic switching high beam;
  • Blind spot monitoring systems;
  • Driver monitoring systems;
  • Frontal collision avoidance systems;

Of the video cameras on the car, only the rear view camera will be installed. There are no front cameras on the sides in this configuration. .

Cars in this configuration will cost from 2,089,000 rubles ($31,600).

Package YN Premium ES

Well, this is top equipment Subaru Legacy, in this configuration there are all the systems described above. In the top configuration Legacy in our country will be sold at a price of 2,239,900 rubles, which corresponds to 33,900 dollars.

Summary

Traditionally, Legacy is not a cheap car, although the price cannot be called exorbitant either. But what do you get for this price?

Legacy is usually compared with its main competitor, the Toyota Camry. So which is better?

First of all, the dimensions, the Toyota car is slightly larger than the Subaru car. But at the same time, the trunk of the Legacy is more spacious.

Appearance . Here the question is subjective, but it seems that Toyota also wins here, the Subaru product looks, in comparison with it, old-fashioned.

What can take Subaru? First of all, despite all the reliability of Toyota, Legacy is considered even more reliable. In the USA, where the lion's share of Subaru sedans is sold, they say - "If you want to buy a car to last, buy a Subaru."

Of the other advantages, the Subaru Legacy all-wheel drive should be mentioned. Sedan engines, in addition to being more reliable, are also more economical. Well, there are also a lot more electronic systems on Subaru. True, while Toyota is cheaper.

And finally, all Legacy for Russia will be delivered directly from Japan, which once again should become a guarantee of the phenomenal reliability of the car.

Of course, if the question arises of what to buy a Subaru or Toyota, each consumer will decide on his own. But I think Subaru offers more interesting car, although a bit more expensive.

Video review Subaru Legacy 2018

Cars model range The Subaru Legacy has gone through as many as six changes since its first introduction in 1989. Today, the last sixth generation, produced since 2014, is widely popular among various motorists.

The perfection of this model range is supported by a huge number of positive feedback and photos, both from car appraisal experts and owners. Particularly positive in the reviews is a high level of variability when buying a Subaru Legacy car, affordable price, high specifications and modern technological equipment.

All in all, it's no surprise that the Subaru Legacy, whether new or old model, is in the first lines of the rating of cars from Subaru. Cars from this manufacturer have always been and will be very popular.

Cars of the first generation Legacy have long been discontinued and now such a vehicle is extremely difficult to find. At the same time, Subaru Legacy at one time brought significant changes, as it was extremely different from all previously produced cars, as can be seen in the photo.

The car quickly gained popularity on a par with other cars from world famous manufacturers. However, in comparison with analogues, the first generation, unlike the Subaru Legacy 2019, was not equipped with top-end power units, but only high-quality spare parts were used in production.

Second generation

Subaru Legacy II generations are probably the most famous among all this lineup. This is due to the fact that the Subaru Legacy II received many global changes that are visible in the photo, which affected, first of all, technological equipment.

This model range is presented in three variations:

The most popular of them is the Subaru Legacy BG5, which has been actively tuned.

Subaru Legacy II generation lasted on the market for 4 years with a high level of sales. This seriously affected the manufacturer, so that subsequent upgrades made it possible to significantly improve the lineup.

Today, if you visually compare the Subaru Legacy 2 (2 generations) and Subaru Legacy 2019 from the photo, it is difficult to find something in common. Especially due to the fact that over time the car took the form of Outback.

Often tuning a Subaru Legacy car affected the shape of the rear bumper. Because of this, you can often find Legacy with non-standard appearance elements.

third generation

Following the Subaru Legacy II, the third generation Subaru has been on sale since 1998. Like its predecessors, the car quickly found its lover. In particular, the car was in demand in its native country - Japan.

The model is represented by the following variations:

The Subaru Legacy BH5 model has become especially popular, as evidenced by the reviews of the owners.

The main feature of the Subaru Legacy BH5 was that the car was directly related to the sports car class, as can be seen in the photo. Despite this, the Subaru Legacy Outback continued to exist.

fourth generation

In 2013, another updated version of Subaru appeared on the global automotive market, which became even less reminiscent of the Subaru Legacy II. Wherein, this car, like its earlier versions, received worldwide recognition and a high level of sales.

The updated model is represented by the following options:

Even today, many car enthusiasts who prefer Subaru cars to other cars remember and appreciate the Subaru Legacy BL5 and Subaru Legacy BP5, which are shown in the photo.

This vehicle had many features, the main of which was the equipment of the Impreza VRX STI sports engine.

The car left the market gradually, and a new generation of Legacy came to replace it, in particular the new Subaru Legacy Outback.

Fifth generation

The new Subaru Legacy, as is customary with fourth generation, was released in two variations:

This car Subaru Legacy was equipped with four different engines at once, which, however, were sporty in any form. Plus, some changes have affected the rear bumper, which are visible in the photo - for clarification, it is best to watch the video test drive.

main feature of this car lies in the fact that the manufacturer paid much attention to the characteristics of the car, which was the exact opposite of the Subaru Legacy BH5 and Subaru Legacy BG5.

To date this machine is not outdated, and on the Internet you can still find expert opinions about Subaru Legacy, photos and owner reviews.

Unlike earlier versions, new Subaru cars of the Legacy model are practically not affected by tuning. This also applies to the Subaru Legacy Outback.

sixth generation

This generation of 2019 Subaru Legacy cars is the last one to date. This model, like all predecessors, is represented by two variations, a sedan and a station wagon, respectively:

Particularly strong changes in the case of this Subaru Legacy touched the rear bumper. In addition, the car received many modern technological additions, in particular on-board computer.

You can buy a sedan or station wagon today in many car dealerships around the world in all existing trim levels. For this, for example, the Kemerovo region is suitable.

Many Subaru Legacy owners visit the Drone, leave their reviews and share photos. If you are interested in the 2019 Subaru Legacy, we recommend that you contact given internet resource. In addition, there you can find the latest information about the Subaru Legacy B5.

Specifications

Each generation of the Subaru Legacy has unique specifications. If the first generation could not boast of having a top-end engine under the hood, then the 2019 Subaru Legacy has a sports powertrain.

Early models of the Subaru Legacy experienced tuning of the engine or, for example, the rear bumper several times. As a result, on the Internet, in particular on the core, you can stumble upon modified versions of cars from this model line.

latest generation

The latest sixth generation of Subaru Legacy cars is equipped with one of two engines. Each engine runs on gasoline and has unique power ratings:

The first motor is as follows:

  • working volume - 2.5 liters;
  • power - 175 horsepower.

The second engine, as well as the first, is an echo of the early version of Legacy. It is characterized by the following:

  • working volume - 3.6 liters;
  • type - 4-cylinder boxer;
  • power - 256 horsepower.

Both power units, regardless of the type of car, whether it is a Subaru Legacy station wagon or a sedan, provide excellent performance. In particular, this applies to the fact that the new Subaru Legacy has a minimum fuel consumption.

You can study in detail the features of each engine by watching a video test drive or a photo on the Internet.

Notes

For cars from the Legacy lineup, the price has always been at an affordable level for the average consumer.

In terms of cost, the Subaru Legacy Outback and the sedan are not much different from each other.

In the manufacture of Legacy cars, high-quality spare parts are used. Due to this, it is possible, without any special fears and extra costs, for example, to remove the rear bumper. If you are interested in such a withdrawal, you are especially advised to see a test drive of the car.

Often, the controls of the car are on the left side. In the case of the Subaru Legacy Outback and the sedan, the car can be right-handed. Find clarification on this matter on the Internet on trusted resources.

On the Internet you can find many official photos of the Subaru Legacy.

All articles

A difficult question, but if you want a spacious sedan with a permanent all-wheel drive, pleasant taxiing and a responsive engine “for inexpensive”, you will have to answer it.

Subaru Legacy III and Subaru legacy Outback (BH)

When choosing a car, the Legacy sedan is often undeservedly forgotten. It so happened that in our country it stands, as it were, in the shadow of the Legacy Outback station wagon, which many (rightly) consider as an “all-and-at once” option. A family car with a large trunk, high ground clearance and all-wheel drive - isn't that a dream?

A dream, but you should not forget about the sedan either. It is not so versatile (sorry for the involuntary pun), and the clearance is smaller - 155 mm versus 200 for the Outback. But in everyday life and such a set should be enough for the eyes.

Those who don’t have enough, and for some reason the Outback is not interesting, can look at an intermediate option - a simple Legacy station wagon, not Outback. It sits lower, it doesn’t look so brutal, but the 528-liter trunk already noticeably dominates the background of the 464-liter sedan.

The Legacy-non-Outback also has a more diverse range of engines (4, not 2), there are plenty to choose from with an eye to the budget. The drive is like that of the fraternal station wagon, only full. Boxes — mechanics or an honest machine. In general, this is a car from those times when Subaru was not yet mired in small-volume engines and CVTs with a single drive. There is a place for a car enthusiast to roam.

More about Subaru Legacy III engines

Depending on the year of manufacture Legacy III meets with:

  • two-liter naturally aspirated engine with a return of 125-156 liters. With.;
  • the same engine, but with turbines and a return of 260-280 hp. With.;
  • the atmospheric scale is continued by the 2.5-liter unit, 170 hp. With.;
  • completes - a three-liter six-cylinder engine of 220 liters. With.

Mechanics is found in all variants, except for the three-liter - there is only automatic transmission.

Shine and poverty of complete sets

It was the turn of the nineties-zero. Subaru has not yet climbed into the premium, so the equipment is to match. In many versions there is no cruise control and driver assistance systems (even traction control!), As a class, there is no dual-zone climate control. There is no electric drive of the front seats even in the top version, just as there are no, for example, rear airbags.

In general, the maximum level of Legacy performance today corresponds to average configuration budget sedan from Renault or Hyundai. With the difference that Renault and Hyundai in the middle versions have a rear view camera, for example. Here, you can only do this on your own. And this is rather strange, because other Japanese cars of those years (like the Corolla Fielder) had both standard navigation and a DVD player. Subaru, on the other hand, is content not with a cassette recorder.

For the “shine” in the cabin of the Legacy III, leather and lurid wood-like inserts are responsible. It is not worth hoping for the safety of either one. Even the "youngest" copies on the market went into the second ten. What kind of security are we talking about?

But let your streaker's heart warm the MOMO steering wheel - a Subaru feature of those years, which is found on almost all versions. There is no particular benefit from it, but the spirit of the Fast and the Furious and Need For Speed: Underground with him!

Specificity and cost of service

It’s worthwhile to speak clearly and clearly right away: there is no longer any talk of children’s sores that crawl out in the first years of ownership. As there is no question of some kind of systematization and classification of problems. In a 20-year-old car, anything and anytime can crumble. There are a few common areas that you should definitely pay attention to:

  • Oil and timing belt. The boxers (especially the 2.5-liter) do not digest oil starvation, therefore, the more regularly you change the oil, the longer the engine takes. Same with the timing belt. Particular attention should be paid to its condition and not to delay the replacement. If it breaks on the same 2.5-liter unit, valve bending is inevitable.
  • Candles. Expensive, and the replacement is confusing, especially on supercharged 2.0 and naturally aspirated 2.5-liter engines. Almost half of the engine will have to be disassembled. So keep your fuel clean: ruining spark plugs is a matter of one unsuccessful gas station.
  • Corrosion. Even without additional galvanizing, the body holds steady for years. But this does not apply to those restored after car accident and, alas, generalists. Their fifth door is covered with "saffron milk caps" much earlier than the trunk lid of a sedan.
  • Power steering leaks are quite common. Fortunately, repair kits at a similar price are also often found. There is no need to change the rail assembly.
  • There are no special questions about the suspension. During everyday operation, the shock absorbers take care of more than 60 thousand km, the suspension arms exceed 200 thousand. It is especially worth watching, perhaps, the anthers of the CV joints. Because the rubber bands are cheap, but the “grenades” themselves are not. Dirt will clog through the torn anthers, and the resource of the CV joints will decline. So be careful!

The agony of choosing a Subaru Legacy III

Finding a serviced, well-groomed, whole sedan is very, very difficult. The most common offerings on the market are:

Not just "bit-painted", but assembled from several copies, like Frankenstein's monster.

In addition, the right-hand drive, more than three owners, which does not redeem the price of 150 thousand rubles. And what does checking the history of the machine through?

The report is much more optimistic than you expect, looking at the photo. There are no arrests and restrictions, native TCP, the declared mileage is similar to the truth. No changes were made to the design, so there should not be any problems with registration. An accident in the database is listed as one and not the worst (“collision with a standing obstacle”). So you can see in a good body shop if this device was tied into a knot. And in principle, for their 150 thousand - why not an option?

Let's see another instance - more expensive.

Again, right-hand drive, sedan, mileage is suspiciously low, but visually the car looks more worthy than the previous one. What about her history?

Immediately draws attention to another year of release. Perhaps the traffic police made a mistake when they brought the car into the database. There are fines in arrears. Because of them, bailiffs can seize, and the new owner will have problems with registration. Duplicate TCP should not scare. With such a rich history and the number of owners, it is not surprising if there was also a duplicate of a duplicate issued to include everyone.

Take it or not

Buying a Subaru Legacy III is always a lottery and a surprise. The car is old and pretty beat up. He was loved to buy young and hot, who "annealed" on the roads and did not have the funds for timely and quality service. Before buying, carefully inspect the car and check the history.

If you find a "live" version, it will please you with a sporty disposition. In motion, the car is almost like a rocket. For her, it costs nothing to accelerate to one hundred and forty and not go into a skid. All-wheel drive and solid tires keep her firmly on the ground.

If you are or have been Subaru owner Legacy III, tell us what problems you encountered while operating the car. Perhaps it is your review that will help someone when choosing a car.

Subaru released the third generation of the Japanese and global market Inheritance in June 1998, while the North American model was introduced in May 1999 for the 2000 model year. In all markets except the United States, production continued until 2002, with a limited production Blitzen model sold mid-cycle under the 2003 model in Japan. US production continued until 2004.

At its introduction in 1999, it won the Automotive Researchers and Journalists Conference Car of the Year award in Japan.

All models were fitted with standard, symmetrical all-wheel drive. Global market and Japanese models ranged from the naturally aspirated 2.0-liter flat-4 to the EZ30 on the 3.0R model. Even if the dimensions have become medium-sized, it is still rated by the EPA as a compact car.

flat-top wagons are no longer produced worldwide, and instead a raised roof is used for both the Legacy wagon and the Legacy Outback (Lancaster in Japan).

In 2001, the EZ30, a newly developed 3.0 L was offered to Outbacks.

The Legacy is the only vehicle in its class that provides all-wheel drive as standard equipment.

models

Blitzen (2000-2003)

1999-2001 Subaru Legacy B4 sedan

The Blitzen model ("Blitz" is German for lightning) was the result of a collaboration with design house Porsche Design, and featured many unique details and paint schemes, and was Subaru's top-level luxury sports package, using elements from their STi performance division. The wheels, body kit and interior were designed by this German group. He also showed the implementation of new serial automatic box Aisin Seiki gears, the first use of a serial shift on an in-line Subaru model. This model was updated in 2002 with an updated design. The model was again updated in 2003 with an interior designed by Andreas Zapatinas.

B4

The B4 model was introduced for the third generation, and was the sedan's only model. RSK featured the familiar DOHC, twin-turbo 2.0 - liter engine 280 hp (210 kW) (265 hp (198 kW) for automatic with manual mode). This results in a 0-60 mph time of 5.2 seconds for manual and 5.8 seconds for automatic. This engine was popular with Japanese buyers due to reduced tax liability based on Japanese vehicle size legislation; machine provides performance advantages over more big cars sold in Japan with over powerful engines but with a smaller tax bill. The B4 moniker is also applied to naturally aspirated models such as the 2.0L TS-R.

The secondary turbo remains inactive during this stage, as the separate control exhaust valve (located on the right side of the engine) remains closed. This valve prevents exhaust gases from entering the secondary turbine.

During the 4000-4500 rpm transient, however, the exhaust control valve is partially open, causing the secondary turbo to reach its nearest operating speed. The ECU - working with a different solenoid and vacuum diaphragm service - determines the amount that opens the control exhaust valve. The ECU calculates this valve opening amount based on the input of the differential pressure sensor that receives channels from the intake manifold and downstream of the secondary turbos.

Any boost pressure produced by the secondary turbocharger during the transition phase is redirected towards the compressor inlet atmosphere (between the turbos and the air filter).

Since the main turbo continues to apply manifold pressure and the secondary turbo is essentially bleeding from the momentum it makes during the transition, the EB will determine when to close the pressure relief valve and fully open the control exhaust valve. Once this is done, the ECU will again look at the input from the differential pressure sensor and open another control valve - the intake valve (which is installed between the outlet of the secondary turbo compressor and the intercooler).

With the feed control valve open, the boost pressure from the secondary turbo is allowed to pass through the intercooler (in addition to the boost supplied by the primary turbo). Manifold pressure during the second stage of turbocharging remains regulated by the primary turbocharger's bypass valve - there is only one turbine bypass valve in the entire system.

Subaru claims that: "The 'staging' between one and two turbo operating range, which was quite noticeable to the driver on the previous B4 model, has now been largely "turned off" by careful selection of turbocharger sizing and control mechanisms. As can be seen from this torque curve, however, under some driving conditions one can still detect a slight decrease in acceleration rates in the preparatory or intermediate phase, which occurs between 4000-4500 rpm."

turbochargers

Despite being called twins, the B4 turbochargers are not identical. The primary turbocharger unit is IHI VF33, which uses a 46.5/35.4mm 9-blade turbine wheel and a 47.0mm/35.4mm 6+6 blade compressor. At idle, the turbo spins at about 20,000 rpm, and this can continue up to a top speed of 190,000 rpm. It has a 17mm diameter bypass orifice to bypass excess exhaust gas. The secondary turbocharger is IHI VF32. On the exhaust side, it uses a 46.5/35.4mm 9-blade turbine wheel, paired with a 52.5/36.6mm 10-blade compressor wheel. It is rated at 180,000 rpm. Both primary and secondary turbochargers use a floating metal bearing center - not ball bearings.

intermediate cooling

Like the WRX, the B4 uses a hood scoop to feed the air-to-air overhead air cooler mount. Made by Sanden, the intercooler has an effective depth of 73mm, a width of 140mm and a length of 370mm. With 26 tubes to take induction air from one end tank to another, the device has a heat transfer capacity of 13.37 kW and reduces 120-130 degrees Celsius of charge air to 70-80 degrees Celsius (claimed).

Gearbox and cardan

Australian delivered Liberty B4S comes with a longitudinally mounted 5-speed mechanical box gear only. This is essentially the same unit that was introduced in the MY99 models (which have seen the most changes since the Liberty was introduced in 1990).

Among its list of improvements is increased case stiffness and double the number of bolts securing it to the engine (eight instead of four). The syncromesh baulk ring, gearing angles and double sync cone in 2nd and 3rd gear have also all been retuned.

The B4 "S Type" close ratio has a higher inline gear ratio over the first three teeth than the Impreza WRX, but a shorter 4.11:1 final drive ratio counters some of this effect. The gears are now cold forged and a hammer blow is now included for added strength and a flexible flywheel design is included to reduce engine vibration reaching the transmission. Pull type 230mm single plate clutch with increased torque capacity featuring 830kg load pressure pressure plate.

AWD The B4 layout is traditional Subaru. Viscous center self-locking clutch pickup front to rear torque 50:50. The distribution of torque on the road, however, depends on the distribution of the load and the grip of the tires on the road. The result is a static straight driving ratio of 60:40 front-rear. Under dynamic driving conditions, however, the torque distribution changes accordingly. The viscous coupling perceives the difference in rotational speed between the front and rear axles and transmits the torque to the end with the larger crank (which has a smaller rpm axis).

Rear viscous LSD is also used to improve high speed stability and low speed cornering traction.

Suspension

The B4s hang on the same platform as other Liberty models - a MacPherson strut under the A-pillar and a multi-link c-pillar. The front suspension includes die-cast aluminum L-shaped cross links and the cross member has a newly designed "performance" rod. A performance rod side brace that improves lateral axle stiffness by 500 percent and longitudinal stiffness by 50 percent. This provides a more consistent suspension geometry when cornering hard. The rear suspension also gets additional subframe support to improve the rear suspension's lateral and longitudinal stiffness (by 200 percent and 20 percent, respectively).

Front Suspension Decrement - Bump/Rebound (N @ 0.3 m/s) 932/2159 Suspension - Bump/Rebound (mm) 105/95 Spring Rate (N/mm) 25.1 Swaybar Diameter (mm) 20 Rear Suspension Decrement - Bump/Rebound (N @ 0.3 m/s) 600/2350 Suspension - Bump/Rebound (mm) 125/85 Spring Rate (N/mm) 47.5 Swaybar Diameter (mm) 17 A-pillar is a lightweight Bilstein . The struts are inverted to deliver higher flexural rigidity (due to the larger tube diameter of the dampers) and less damping fade as a result of the increased piston size. The springs are installed in such a way that their displacement of the center line coincides with the axis of rotation. This reduces road shock and - by minimizing bump and rebound friction - provides less vibration.

Initial spring, the damper and swaybar characteristic of the B4 were developed in Japan and then tuned to the Nürburgring circuit. He said the goal was at least equal to the performance of the BMW M3. Here are some of the comparison figures:

braking

1495kg Weight B4 slows down 294mm ventilated front disc brakes and dual pot floating calipers and 290mm ventilated rear discs and single pot floating calipers. The increased vacuum diameter assisted by the tandem booster gives reduced pedal effort, although a relatively solid braking feel (see graph). The system is diagonally linked to maintain safety in the event one line should fail, and front and rear pressure control valves are used to balance the braking force according to weight distribution. Maximum deceleration from 100 km / h is 0.99 g with 39.4 meters of braking distance.

Standard anti-lock brake system The B4 is a Bosch 5.3i's system (which is made under license from Nippon ABS). It is a 4-channel, 3-phase system with the front wheels controlled individually while the rears are controlled collectively (via the "select" low method). Choose low method uses rear wheel with a lower friction coefficient to calculate the brake line pressure applied to both rear wheels.

Advantage new system is an increase in the level of wheel speed control provided by the 3-phase control loop, which currently operates at 18 MHz (up from 12 MHz) and has increased ROM capacity (32kB up from 12KB). In driving conditions, the result is about 50 percent less yaw torque (steer/steer ratio) when one side of the vehicle is braking on ice and the other on asphalt. One third of the amount of steering correction is required under these conditions.

Higher "select" low rear brake force mode, together with electronic brake force build-up delay on front wheel with a high friction coefficient and a negative steering shaft radius, ensures maximum stability of the chassis when braking.

electronics

The combination key, remote central locking transmitter and transponder immobilizer protect the B4 Liberty from theft. After the key is inserted into the ignition lock cylinder and turned on, the amplifier antenna (located around the ignition barrel) reads the transponder code and transmits it to the engine management system. Without the correct code sequence, the engine cannot start.

In addition to the key immobilizer, Subaru Australia is also installing a two-stage security system (as came installed on the previous Impreza BPP). The remote lock represents the first stage of security, while the console installed numeric keypad forms the second stage. In order to disable the 6 immobilization points, the correct four-digit code must be entered from the keypad. The system also features anti-hijacking mode, intrusion alarms, false alarm prevention, internal screamer siren, subsonic sensor, valet mode and anti-virus cross-pollination software.

The instrument cluster B4 is backlit and provides excellent visibility in all conditions. Clock rings, gauges and calibration data are illuminated sequentially as soon as the ignition is turned on.

American car audio company McIntosh spent 12 months in Japan tweaking the sound system to match the B4 speakers. The double DIN head unit includes a single CD player, tuner and cassette deck, while some units also had a mini disc player. The system features a high-performance digital-to-analogue (D/A) converter with 20-bit Burr-Brown chips, Dolby B noise reduction (tape), dual AM/FM radio antennas, and Guard McIntosh power technology, which gives low distortion to high sound pressure levels. A 6-band, 4-channel parametric equalizer has also been tuned specifically for the B4.

Separate to the head unit - under the front passenger seat - is the system booster. The output power is handled by each of the 4 channels 24W and the subwoofer is 60W. The total harmonic distortion of the system is only 0.05 percent - comparable to a good home audio system.

The speaker system includes a 20mm soft dome tweeter in the sail area, a 165mm polypropylene 2-way cone in the front and rear doors and a 152 x 228mm subwoofer offset to one side on the rear deck. The entire system weighs about 10 kilograms.

An electronically controlled muffler is used to keep the B4 quiet at low speeds. The pipe that leads to the rear muffler is divided into two parts, with one pipe fitted with a flap valve. ECU - work with actuator and cable - opens this valve when driving at medium and highway speeds. This increases the flow of exhaust gases.

body

The hood of the Liberty B4 is made from 1 mm thick aluminium. Once installed with its intercooler scoop, the cover assembly weighs 9.5kg - about 8kg lighter than the steel cover fitted to other Liberty models.

Body strength has also been improved from the first 1999 Liberty talk form. Torsional stiffness has increased from the 1999 model from 2.52 x 106 Nm2/rad to 3.5 x 106 Nm2/rad. Flexural stiffness increases from 4.89 x 106 Nm to 5.47 x 106 Nm.

Other technical facts about the B4 Liberty... The B4 has 0.34 Cd and CdA from 0.703 m2 It's 190kW at 6400rpm and 320Nm at 4800rpm - by comparison, Australian delivered Impreza STi did 206kW at 6500rpm and 353Nm at 4000rpm. Max pressure boost is quoted at 0.933 bar (at 4800 rpm). The engine has a minimum fuel rating with an octane rating of 98 RON. Subaru Australia lists a vehicle capable of 0 - 60 mph (not quite 100 km/h) in 6.5 seconds and 14.6 second quarter miles as well maximum speed 220 km / h. Seventy-six percent of his body is galvanized metal. The front caliper pot diameter is 42.8mm (x2), and the rear caliper pot diameter is 38.1mm (x1). B4 has a combined training cycle of 650 km.

GT

The GT is a tuned version of the Legacy Wagon, using a 2.0L twin-turbo engine.

USDM GT is a neat model that showed great brake calipers than standard trim, as well as imitation wood interior trim. The engine is the same 2.5l naturally aspirated EJ251 engine found in standard trim.

USDM GT Limited

The GT Limited is a package offered on the USDM Legacy which had the same addition as the GT trim and added a factory all weather package. This included features such as heated seats, de-icing and rearview mirrors, but retained the same EJ251 engine.

GT VDC

Key Specifications GT twin turbo but came with Subaru's own traction and stability control VDC (third generation) VDC, (Vehicle Dynamics Control). These models were only available in Auto.

GT-B

The GT-B is another extended version of the GT Legacy Wagon, the "B" in the title referring to the Bilstein brace that the car was equipped with. E-Tune II was introduced in 2001 as a 2002 model. Cars with Bilstein shocks had a small Bilstein badge affixed to the back of the car, below the "GT" badge. They are showing some different interior options, bigger brakes and discs, and more.

D Type

The fourth revision of the third generation Legacy, introduced in 2001, made several important but subtle changes to the front of the car. The fenders, grille and headlights have all been slightly modified, making interchangeability with power type impossible. Headlights on Japanese market continued to use HID bulbs as in previous years, but the shape on the headlight was slightly modified. The grille has been made slightly taller than the AC models, and the shape of the bumper around the grille has been slightly modified to accommodate the bottom seam where the hood and bumper meet. In line with previous models that HID headlights were dashboard installed an adjustment switch that allowed the driver to re-aim the headlights to reduce the glare of approaching Vehicle although the switches have been changed slightly internally to adjust to increase the power needed to set up the new style headlights. The bonnet became a light aluminum alloy, similar to that featured on the STI's at the time. Compression and timing modified in order to further reduce the effect of loss of boost during switching from primary to secondary stages. The ECU also received an update, now a manufacturer's overhaul or third party tuning workshops. Additional optional extras offered upon purchase including but not limited to; new body kit, head light surrounds, and 4-pot brake - stock wheels are designed to accommodate this upgrade. The D-Type Legacy is Subaru's best frame on a serial twin turbo engine besides the STI revision.

Legacy Wagon Avignon Concept (2001)

It was a concept car named after an area in the south of France, based on a station wagon. It includes a cobalt blue body, a naturally aspirated 2.5L engine, a unique body kit, wheels, and interior accents such as clay-colored seats and a light-colored dashboard.

The car was unveiled at the 2001 35th Annual Tokyo Motor Show.

With the arrival of the third generation Legacy, the second generation Outback station wagon became its own model. The SUS heritage remained unique to North America and was rebuilt with the Outback Limited package, offering a sedan with an optional horizontal six-cylinder engine, also optional on a cart. A new body style was introduced in Japan in September 1998, and is called the Lancaster. The US-spec Outback was available starting in 2000. In October of that year, Nissan introduced a Japan-only competitor named with an Ouback-like appearance called the Nissan Avenir Blaster.

The raised roof was retained, but the new body was sleeker, rounder, and about 3 inches longer, with a slightly longer wheelbase. A new version flat four-cylinder "boxer" subaru engine was the standard, offering lower torque, better fuel efficiency and smoother operation. There were no new changes to the front suspension, but there was a complete makeover for rear suspension, which included a new design that occupied less of a bottom hole. This adds more space in the trunk and cargo floor for the convenience of the owner. In terms of safety, the improvement that has been made consists of three-point seat belts for the driver and four additional passengers. There is also a child safety seat anchor for all seat positions in the rear. For the front, seat belts are positioned to better hold the driver and front passenger, and with front and rear airbags installed to protect people in such cases a collision occurs. Subaru Outback received a good rating from the Insurance Institute for Safety traffic in 2000 for his work in the safety of a 40 mph crash test demonstration. The Outback has been engineered to make it as safe, smooth and comfortable to ride as it can be.

The rear seat on the Outback sedan does not fold, unlike previous generations, where backseat had a 60:40 folding seat for extended length elements. Rear headrests are now included as standard equipment on all trim levels. Clearance in 190 mm () 7.3. The engine now meets California Lion emission standards.

The Outback came standard with 165 hp. (123 kW) SAE, 4-cylinder boxer engine, a maximum torque (166 lb⋅ft (225 Nm)) four-cylinder SOHC design that was available on low revs compared to the previous generation. The 2.5 L SOHC four-cylinder engine uses a toothed belt that needs to be replaced at about 100,000 miles (160,000 km), while the 3.0 L six-cylinder engine uses a timing chain that does not need to be replaced when normal conditions.

The base six-cylinder model was offered as the H6-3.0 - its interior, and available options, were identical to those of the Outback "Limited" except for the manual transmission, although many successful factory-less transmission swaps have proven to be physically bolt-on (but still require some significant modifications to the electrical system). Badging for all 6-cylinder Outbacks was located on the front grille as well as on the rear of the vehicle.

In the higher trim level, known as the Outback LL Bean in the US, a 200-watt Macintosh stereo system was standard from 2001 to 2003. These were among the few vehicles ever factory equipped with McIntosh stereo equipment. Options are also included in the dash six disc CD changer, VDC (to control vehicle dynamics), and dual moonroofs. OnStar was available as an option on the US-spec LL Bean. In-dash sat-nav was offered on Japanese-spec vehicles on top trim level wagons starting with model year 1998, and continues to offer Momo's black leather steering wheel with natural wood inlay, shift knob and parking brake knob. Plaid upholstery is still offered on Japanese-spec Lancasters.

The six-cylinder was also available as a DC, with Subaru's VDC (Vehicle Dynamics Control) system, integrated stability control with traction control. The system was also mated to the previously used Japanese market all-wheel drive system called VTD, in which power was split 45/55 front-rear under normal conditions. When wheel slip is detected, the system turns off power to the spinning wheel and directs power to those that are not. Only when needed to make the brakes slow the affected wheels when the vehicle detects excessive oversteer or understeer. This package had more soundproofing than other trims, as well as those features found on the LL Bean such as a Macintosh stereo, OnStar, and leather interior. Its curb weight was slightly higher than that of the standard LL Bean trim, and while the VDC marking was placed on the front quarter panel only that H6-3.0 and Outback markings were also applied, as usual.

Australian vehicle specifications differ from those supplied to the US, following the Japanese model; primarily headlights, side indicators (on the front quarter panel), taillights, rear front and rear bumpers and higher placement "outback" on the front door body badges (as opposed to being placed on the plastic shell).

This generation of the Outback was released in the style of an early gold colored shell, all-in-one headlights (no different from the US headlight model) and interior light gray fabric (sometimes speckled with different colors), a light brown wood textured dashboard and a simple instrument cluster. A push bar (a smaller style of kangaroo or roobar) was also available as an option on secondary market. Late style (2002-2004) was updated with a silver shell, updated range of paint colors, multi-unit headlight (where the bulb and indicators were in different sections of the unit) and internally dark grey/black cloth, dark gray plastic, very dark brown weak wood texture and metal slats on dashboard dials.

Available models included the base "Outback", "Outback Limited", which added a sunroof and fabric/ leather seats and the "Outback H6", which included a 6-cylinder VDC engine as described in this article. The H6 was released with slightly different 16-inch wheels and is available in a single off-white metallic pearl instead of the usual color with a gold or silver shell. The H6 was only available in automatic, apparently due to the size of the 6-cylinder engine taking up too much space to fit. manual box and related mechanical devices dual range.

Japan

The Lancaster (as it is known in Japan) was released initially in September 1998 after the initial release of the third generation Legacy in May 1998. The Lancaster models were available initially in 2.5L engine sizes with an E-4AT gearbox or Manual 5-Speed. In May 2000, Subaru released the Lancaster 6, featuring a resurrected Subaru's Flat-6 engine. It was in production from April 2000 to May 2001, when Subaru released facelift models. Legacy models included a revised Lancaster design. These changes were seen on "Outbacks" produced in Japan, US built Outbacks did not use the refurbished design released by Subaru Japan.

Lancaster AD(Active Driving Assist) was introduced in September 1999. The system featured two CCD cameras mounted on either side of the rearview mirror. The system was installed on models with 2.5L VDC and later in 2000 on the new Lancaster 6 VDC models.

The ADA system featured 4 key security components:

function Description
Lane Departure Warning ADA will detect when the vehicle is diverging from the intended course of the road. An audible sound is made through the navigation system and a dashboard warning is highlighted.
Inter-vehicle Distance Warning When ADA detects a car rapidly approaching another vehicle in-front, the system will alert the driver with an audible signal.
Dynamic cruise control While cruise control is active, ADA will keep the vehicle at a safe distance from the vehicle in front. This, in turn, requires no input from the driver when the vehicle is rapidly approaching the vehicle ahead.
Alarm Curves / Shift Down If ADA detects an approaching corner and calculates the vehicle may experience a loss of traction or understeer, ADA will alert the driver with an audible downshift and automatic transmission to provide engine braking to the vehicle in order to slow it down before entering the corner.

While the recently marketed Subaru XA: Vision System (Japanese) (essentially, ADA) is in the 5th generation Legacy and Outback is attracting media attention for "new advanced technologies", the ADA system was actually a system that was developed back in the late 1990s, along with the development of the 3rd generation Legacy and in no way "new technologies" per se, but rather a "re-recognised" system for a safer conscious global market.

Baja

Subaru developed a four-door utility coupe (pickup) version of the Outback with all-wheel drive, known as the "Subaru Baja" (pronounced ba-ha). Manufactured from 2002 to 2006 and sold for the 2003 to 2006 model year, the Baja combined the handling and passenger characteristics of a traditional passenger car with open bed versatility, and to a lesser extent, the carrying capacity of a pickup truck. Subaru has marketed the Baja in the United States, Canada and Chile.

Gearboxes

The 4-speed automatic transmission had a feature, where the transmission could be instructed to ignore 1st gear from a permanent stop, to aid driving in traction-limited situations, such as ice and snow. The system is activated when the gear lever is moved from position "D" to "second". The car will start in 2nd gear, not first. The transmission also splits the delivered 50-50 torque between front and rear wheels. Once the car has stopped, the transmission will start back to 2nd, not 1st, until the system is boosted, to 4th.

Japanese models with automatic transmission include the "Power/Econo" button that was previously installed on the gear selector was moved to rear gear with right side, due to the redevelopment of the automatic transmission shift knobs.

The automatic transmission also has the ability to change shift points, and hold the gears longer when the engine is running at high revs. This is achieved by depressing the accelerator pedal quickly, which causes the gear to hold the gear until 5,000 rpm before shifting into the next gear. No indicator is displayed on the instrument panel, unlike previous generations. The transmission also has engine over-rev protection by shifting the gear to the next available gear once 6,500 rpm has been reached, even if the gear selector is in a low gear position.

Japanese-spec dual-turbo cars had a "SPORTSHIFT" tiptronic transmission that allowed the driver to push the automatic gear selector to the left, and then allow the driver to shift the automatic like a manual transmission. In-dash sat-nav was offered on Japanese-spec vehicles on top trim level sedans and wagons, beginning with the 1998 model year, and continues to offer Momo's black leather steering wheel, shift knob, and parking brake knob.

For the first time the Subaru Legacy concept was released in 1987, the serial production of the model in Japan and the USA began only two years later. The car was offered with sedan and station wagon bodies. The cars were equipped with atmospheric and supercharged boxer "fours" with a capacity of 102–280 hp. With. The release of the first generation model ended in 1994.

2nd generation (BD/BG/BK), 1993–1998

In 1993, the second generation Subaru Legacy went on sale. The engines remained four-cylinder, but the weakest versions were gone. The strongest option was considered a car equipped with a 2.2 turbo engine with a capacity of 280 hp. With. The cars were completed with a five-speed “mechanics” or a four-band “automatic”. In 1994, a station wagon appeared (in the Japanese market it was called Lancaster) with a plastic off-road body kit and increased ground clearance. In 1996, Subaru Outback became an independent model. Production of the "second" Subaru Legacy was discontinued in 1998.

3rd generation (BE/BH), 1998–2004

The third generation Subaru Legacy was produced from 1998 to 2003 with sedan and station wagon bodies. The cars were equipped with four- or six-cylinder boxer petrol or diesel engines. During this time, such versions of the car as Blitzen, STI,.

4th generation (BL/BP), 2003–2009

In 2003, the fourth generation Subaru Legacy went on sale, which is a third generation model with a 20 mm longer wheelbase. The cars were offered in versions with four- or six-cylinder boxer petrol or diesel engine. On the Russian market Legacy came with gasoline engines 2.0 (150 hp), 2.5 (173 hp) and 3.0 with 245 hp. With. In 2009 there was a change of generations.
