A brief overview of typical BMW E60 malfunctions from the Technical Center

The extraordinary appearance of the BMW 5-Series in the body of the E-60 in 2003 became a revolutionary model, also equipped with the most advanced technologies.

This "five" surpassed its predecessors in terms of speed. At the same time, it should be noted that not only models with active Dynamic Drive stabilizers or the Servotronic steering wheel could boast of excellent handling, but also with a conventional suspension. The complete set of the model corresponds to the business class: six airbags, climate control, dynamic stabilization system, alloy wheels- all this is in the basic version. The simplest version is equipped with a 4-cylinder engine with a capacity of 156 Horse power. However, on secondary market such models are practically non-existent. Mainly offered sedans with rear wheel drive and a six-cylinder engine. Among the many proposals you can find four-wheel drive, and station wagon body. On one site, even several dozen BMW M5 models with a 507 “horses” engine were found.

Body condition and electrical equipment

Cars aged 3-4 years look very dignified. The owners of such cars usually closely monitor the condition of their "iron horses" and do not spare money for their maintenance. The metal from which the body is made perfectly resists corrosion. But from time to time, clicks and squeaks can occur in the area of \u200b\u200bthe front panel. The fact is that BMW body M5 is made using a special technology - the front spars with strut supports are made of aluminum and connected to a steel frame. Such a design should have increased strength, but over time and for various reasons (repairs, road roughness), the connection may begin to “breathe”. When purchasing a used car, you should be prepared for the difficulties in solving problems with electronics, which are often found in the “five”, this mainly happens with the “I-Drive” system. This system is designed to control many functions - from adjusting the stiffness of the shock absorber to adjusting the interior lighting. And the failure of even one sensor leads to a general failure. At after-sales service it is recommended to update the system firmware every six months for 5,000 rubles, since the failure of the processor will require the replacement of the entire computer (worth 50,000 rubles).

Steering and suspension.

When the aluminum suspension appeared, motorists had doubts about its strength, but over time they disappeared. Details of the rear multi-link practically do not require replacement up to 100,000 km. Shock absorbers can give up earlier, as well as stabilizer struts. May start knocking in first year steering rack. But under warranty, it will be replaced only in the event of a leak, which happens extremely rarely. But the hydraulic actuators of active stabilizers costing about 50,000 rubles often leak. Therefore, it is better to take a used "five" with a conventional suspension.

The front and rear brake pads require replacement after 25-35 thousand km, brake discs - about half as often.

Engines

For 8 years of production, 20 have been installed on the BMW E60 different engines, some have already been discontinued and are practically not found on cars offered for sale. The least problematic experts call the gasoline six-cylinder engines of 2.5 and 3.0 liters of the N52 series, as well as the engines of the N53 series with direct injection for the 523i, 525i, 530i that appeared in 2007. We should not forget about oil consumption in BMW - the norm is 1 liter per 2-3 thousand km. There are no probes, the indicator is only a light on the instrument panel. Complete replacement should be carried out after 10-12 thousand km.

Surprisingly almost uninterrupted operation diesel engines compared to gasoline. But they also have trouble spot- turbine, the service life of which is not more than 100-120 thousand km.

The base engine, a four-cylinder N46 petrol, is best avoided. Loss of traction, difficulty starting at low temperatures, erratic idling - all this will have to be faced.

Transmission

A traditionally reliable place in BMW design. There are no problems with the mechanics at all, but it is very difficult to find it - we practically did not buy such cars from us. In a 6-speed automatic transmission, shocks periodically occur when changing steps. But this is easily solved by flashing "Ai-Drive". It may be necessary to replace the plastic pallet of the box - due to temperature changes, oil may leak. Do not give up on the all-wheel drive BMW - the electromagnetic clutch works stably. If the choice fell on the M5 (which can be purchased for 1.7-2 million rubles), it should be borne in mind that the clutch will be a consumable item. The disk and basket regularly serve no more than 30,000 km, and the 2-mass flywheel of the engine will also have to be changed - a total of more than 100,000 rubles.

Purchase

The owner of the BMW E60 will not be able to save on expensive service - only professionals can do bodywork and electrical repairs. In addition, in Russia, the resource of the main parts does not exceed 2 years or 100,000 km (on the verge of warranty period). But the cost of a 3-year-old car is 1 million rubles lower than a new one. Replacing everything you need will cost a quarter of that amount. However, do not forget that in three years the value of your car will decrease by 30-40%.

In my time bmw car The 525i in the back of the E60 created a real revolution in terms of innovation and design. Today we’ll talk about a 2008 intake car with a mileage of 70 thousand kilometers. Under the hood, the restyled five has a 2.5-liter inline-six with a capacity of 218 horsepower and an automatic transmission. By the way, in the secondary market for top-end equipment, sellers ask, on average, 850-900 thousand rubles.

Our car is already 7 years old, but both outside and inside everything looks quite modern. There is a difference with the new generation, and it is noticeable. But the language does not dare to say that something is missing in the cabin, and for those who first sit down in the BMW 5 Series, emotions are overflowing.

Manageability and the Bavarian at the height of not even the most powerful engine. The interior, at least, is not inferior to many of the latest products of the past year, except that the multimedia system noticeably slows down. To be honest, there are still some downsides. Firstly, the quality of finishing materials, Secondly, they say that, over time, crickets appear in the car, and some details are made “not in German” - cup holders, ashtray, etc.

And what do auto mechanics say about the model? What does the BMW 525i E60 have weak sides, which we don't know? First of all, this is that the machine is very demanding on maintenance and on the use of strictly original spare parts and oils. But at the same time, BMW engines, originating from the legendary M20, are renowned for their reliability and durability.

However, the motor is demanding on fuel quality, otherwise the spark plugs will become consumables, and the fuel pump and catalyst will have to be changed every 100 thousand kilometers. Replacing the latter, by the way, along with the work of official dealer will cost approximately 70 thousand rubles.

The transmission used in the car is manufactured by ZF. Like the engine, it is famous for its reliability and durability, but, again, it is very demanding on maintenance. As for the mechanics, the BMW 525i E60 is reliable, but the machine needs special attention. Firstly, changing the oil in the gearbox every 60 thousand kilometers. Secondly, keep an eye on the automatic transmission pan - it is plastic and over time it begins to “lead”, a replacement costs about 10 thousand rubles. If it is not repaired, it may burst, and the box will be left without oil.

Now running. Each of the 10 "fives" E60 comes with a "dynamic drive" system, in other words, with active shock absorbers. In Russian conditions, by 100-120 thousand mileage (sometimes earlier), they begin to flow. Putting new ones will cost 50 thousand rubles for each axle. simple pendant maintenance is cheaper.

Most often, in our conditions, the transverse levers fail and the wear of the front hub bearings increases. In order for them to serve longer, competent and qualified adjustment is needed. Yet weak point BMW 525i E60 can be called a steering rack, the replacement of which, probably, every owner of this model has encountered, and silent blocks of the rear levers, the resource of which is only 50 thousand kilometers.

And a few words about the electrician. There is a whole heap of it in the BMW 5 Series. The i-drive system is responsible for almost everything in the car. At the time when the BMW brand integrated it into their cars, it was still quite "raw". But the breakdown of one or even several components of this system will not affect the car, it will continue to operate normally, but with a black multimedia screen. Replacing the system will cost 50 thousand rubles, and it is advisable to reflash it from time to time so that it does not fail.

It should be noted that the car is not very liquid and loses 8-10% of its original cost per year. As for, in the back of the F10, the closest in terms of configuration will be the restyled 520i, costing 1,790 thousand rubles. In terms of power, the freshly baked model loses more than 30 horses, but its acceleration to hundreds is only 0.5 seconds slower. But fuel consumption is less by a third.

Statistically, 8 out of 10 BMW owners 525i in the body of the E60 are happy with their car. Dynamics, functionality and presentable appearance are recorded in the asset. Well, most often they complain about the excessive oil appetite of the engine, high fuel consumption and maintenance costs, especially after a run of 100 thousand kilometers. Today there are many offers on the secondary market, and for those who are going to buy this car, on the complex diagnostics not worth saving.

BMW E60 is a great solution for you!

Over time, the BMW E60 was known better and began to be loved more, although it still did not gain the same fame as the E39. Despite this, BMW in the back of the E60 is now considered a worthy representative of the famous Bavarian concern.

Recently, used cars are beginning to enjoy more and more demand. This is especially true when it comes to German cars. This is explained quite simply: German quality known all over the world, it is even singled out as an independent brand. Let's see if this famous quality applies to cars, and also decide whether it is worth buying used cars, even German ones.

What is BMW E60

If you look at the BMW 5 Series, in the back of the E60 in general, we can say that this is a 2003 sedan. It belongs to the fifth series of the Bavarian concern. Since the release of the BMW 5 E60 has not gained popularity and has not won the hearts of motorists. The reason for this was the lost competition to its own predecessor, the E39 model. However, this can be explained because this model is still considered the best among the entire fifth series of the concern. Over time, the fifth series BMW (E60) was known better and began to be loved more, although it still did not gain the same fame as the E39. Despite this, the BMW E60 is now considered a worthy representative of the famous Bavarian concern.

Its equipment consists of gasoline or turbodiesel engines of various sizes: from 2.2 to 4.4 for gasoline engines and 3 liters for diesel engines. The latter can have 4 and 6 cylinders. Gasoline engines in their overwhelming mass they have 6 cylinders, but the most powerful 4.4 liters have 8 cylinders. Are the motors also different? From 163 to 333 hp The standard of this model is a 2.5-liter engine with a power of 192 hp. The gearbox in the BMW 5 (E60) can be manual and automatic. This was a brief look at the model, now you can take a closer look at it, touching already possible problems fives from BMW (E60) and ways to solve them.

Body problems

At the fifth bmw series(E60) there are practically no problems with the body. Designers from Germany did a great job, which allowed them to create a monolithic body, although some of its parts are made of aluminum. Particular attention should be paid to the suspension on the subframe, hood, fenders. It is these parts of the suspension that are made of soft material, so it is easier to damage them, and in case of careless handling, the BMW car service in Moscow will become your second home.

Engine problems

BMW 5 engines (E60 body) cannot be attributed to the most problem-free parts of a car of this brand. All of them have their weaknesses, and this does not depend on either power or volume. And if good European roads still relatively retain it, then in Russian realities, 250,000 mileage can overcome no more than 30% of all cars, and this is a normal figure for BMW. The rest of the cars are starting to experience serious problems with the engine in the form of constant overheating. The cause is a malfunction of the valve, as well as the appearance of soot on the rings.

Catalysts are also a weak point; after 100,000 kilometers, in most cases they simply fall apart. Spark plugs last about 30-40,000 kilometers, although in Europe they are designed for 100,000 kilometers. Prevention should be in the form of periodic cleaning of the injection system. The most important thing is not to remove the injectors. Repair bmw engine 5, E60 is only a matter of time, most owners of this car will still have to face this.

Gearbox problems

The gearbox can be attributed to one of the most advanced parts of the car. However, this applies not only to the BMW 5, E60, but in general to all representatives of this German concern. Repair of the automatic transmission of the BMW 5 (E60) is required infrequently, up to 150,000 kilometers it serves excellently, but this is subject to proper handling. For careless drivers, the gearbox can go haywire after 50,000 kilometers. When choosing a used car, it is better to stop at mechanical box gears, especially in a situation where the total mileage of the car is high. And although there is not much difference in the production of automatic and mechanics, the latter has a simpler design, which slightly increases its service life.

Suspension problems

Mechanically, in the BMW 5 Series (E60), the suspension is the weakest. This is explained very simply: like so many other European cars, they are designed to drive on the autobahn or a highway with good coverage. To Russian roads European cars for the most part are not ready. As a result, the steering rack, silent brakes and ball bearings are particularly affected. Each of these barely survive to 100,000 kilometers. Steering wheel repair bmw racks 5, E60 - a frequent phenomenon. In order to delay this as long as possible, it is recommended to diagnose the suspension more often, so that in the event of the slightest breakdown, they are immediately eliminated before they turn into something more.

Electronics problems

It is electronics that should be attributed to the weakest part of the BMW fifth series (E60). Although the system itself is quite developed, it works extremely poorly. The vast majority of owners of this car model remember their electronics with an extremely bad word when talking. The main problems are not in the design, but in the software. In the minds of the designers, it was assumed that drivers could take control of secondary functions, but this remained a good idea, because it did not work out in practice. The disassembly of the BMW 5 E60, namely the first models, showed that part of all the electronics was defective, and the consequences of this remained even now, which in no way brings stability to the system.

It is worth noting that this problem was solved in later series. In them, the software itself has already been tested and improved, and the blocks themselves have been produced of higher quality. If you decide to buy a used E60, be sure to check its electronics before buying. BMW repair immediately after the purchase - this is clearly not what you expect from this car. Timely diagnostics will allow you to determine if there are defective blocks, and if so, they will need to be replaced with new ones.

Other problems

In addition to the above, the most common problems, there are also more rare, specific ones that are not common, but still can interfere with the comfort of drivers and passengers.

One of the most common small problems are parking sensors. When buying a used E60, pay special attention to their condition, make their diagnosis.

The cheek also deserves special mention. rear window, which already a few months after the acquisition begins to seize regularly. However, it is very easy to solve this problem by disassembling and lubricating the mechanism with oil, and if there are oxidized places, they should be cleaned with fine sandpaper.

When buying BMW parts for your car, some people think that you only need to buy new ones. In fact, our practice shows that used BMW parts are also perfectly capable of performing their functions.

Here you can purchase both new and original BMW auto parts, as well as those left over from disassembly of cars. In any case, without exception, all our spare parts are of high quality, which are perfect for your car!

Story

BMW 5 Series E60- rear or all-wheel drive five-seater sports sedan class E.

Eight years after the start of production of its most successful business class model, BMW decided to change it and presented a completely new car - "top five" with index E60. She will take her rightful place between the infamous "" and the latest roadster ...

The fifth generation of the BMW fifth series is now on the assembly line. Tens of thousands of buyers around the world received ordered and pre-paid new "fives" with index E60. Did they like her?

Judging by the interest with which everyone is looking for information about the new "five" on the Internet, this car has become the most popular in the history of the model. Firstly, she debuted just after the not-so-successful model of her competitors - Mercedes-Benz E-class in this generation, he “blundered” a little, which the Bavarians can take advantage of. Secondly, the previous generation of the "five" with, known throughout the world due to its "well-trained" chassis and excellent engines, significantly pressed the competitors' positions, making room for the new model.

According to the ideology of BMW, each generation of the company's models "alternates": one becomes revolutionary, the next after it - evolutionary. And no one doubts that the new "five" is a "revolution". Look at the car: in my opinion, this is the best creation of Chris Bangle, unless, of course, you count the roadster. And although only a few have seen the new car "live", judging by the photographs, it will be something. Something special and unusual, although made with all the traditions. Branded "nostrils"? There is, of course, as well as the rear side pillar, which gives the car swiftness. There are also "semi-oval" vents rear doors, which we can observe on all generations of the "five", starting from the very first. The car is 100% identified as a BMW, but at the same time there is no total resemblance to the "seven" - the "five" is interesting in its own way, although there are still some common solutions. Take, for example, the "turn signals" located above the head lighting - this solution was first used on the "seven", and is now being extended to other models.

The famous i-Drive, a sensational control system for auxiliary functions, also migrated to the "five". It was modernized, the control algorithm was greatly simplified, but the round joystick was still left. True, now it is deprived of a unique hydraulic motor that imitated all the clicks and resistances of the joystick. The number of directions in which the "ey-drive" works has also decreased - now there are only four of them, instead of eight on the "seven". In the course of refinement, the Menu key appeared, which allows you to return one "window" back. The screen on which the i-Drive "travels" has also changed. Now it is made using transflective technology and reflects the light falling on it, thereby increasing the brightness of the image. And the brightness of the image increases at the command of a special sensor that controls the degree of illumination of the screen. The screen also has a special heating so that it can work normally at low temperatures.

The body structure of the new "five" is unique. For the first time in the automotive industry, the front of the body is made of aluminum, while everything else is made of steel. Such an unusual decision is dictated primarily by the desire of the Bavarians to preserve the driving nature of the car - to achieve optimal weight distribution along the axes of 50/50 in percentage. That is why the "front" is made of aluminum - it is much lighter than steel. The junction of aluminum and steel, which, as you know, "are not friends", is processed special composition, excluding the chemical interaction of metals. Both dissimilar parts of the body are attached to each other with special rivets, which are also treated with an anti-corrosion compound.

The wheelbase of the new model has been increased by 58 mm, and the car itself has become 66 mm longer. And now the "five", having retained its driver's character, has become much more comfortable and spacious. A characteristic "disease" of all previous generations is the lack of legroom and knee room for rear passengers. Thanks to the extended wheelbase, E60 models rear passengers will be very comfortable.

Suspensions, both front and rear, are now made almost entirely of aluminium. This decision was dictated by the desire to reduce the mass of suspension parts and, as a result, to remove such an unpleasant effect as the vibration of unsprung masses. At the same time, structurally, the suspension did not make any revolution: in front it is still the McPherson struts that have been tested by time and roads, and in the back - multi-link suspension. The Bavarians did not fork out for air suspension or "electronic" brakes, and rightly so - they are excellent at setting up what they have. Although from the "bells and whistles" there is still something. For a surcharge, you can install the Dynamic Drive system on the "five" - stabilizers roll stability with active hydraulic roll compensators. Until the moment when the lateral overloads in the turn do not exceed 0.3g, the system completely dampens the rolls - the car follows the trajectory like a real "athlete". The same effect is usually achieved by installing much more rigid springs, but in the case of the "five" the Bavarians could not afford this - after all, at first it was more likely road car and then sports.

Another "twist" - steering with variable gear ratio, ASF system. At the command of the control unit, the electric motor can increase or decrease the speed of rotation of the gear relative to that with which the driver rotates the steering wheel. To put it simply, the steering can become "sharper", and at the same time the driver still has that characteristic only for the "Bavarians", a sense of the road. The ASF system uses many sensors from other systems in its work and in emergency cases can even save the car from "traveling" into a ditch. How? If the car slips off the line with the wheels turned out in the direction of the turn, and the driver does not have enough experience, knowledge, or courage to slightly turn the steering wheel back, thus allowing the front wheels to "hook" on the surface, the system can do it itself. It will slightly reduce the angle of rotation of the front wheels, and the machine will stabilize again. At the same time, ASF recognizes those situations when the car is deliberately torn into a slip. For example, if an experienced driver goes through a corner in a controlled skid, as they say, "fan", ASF will not interfere with the car with its "recommendations". So the "drive" remains!

The car has been produced in Germany since 2003. BMW 5 Series (E60) in 2006 it underwent modernization, as a result of which the engine power increased.

Basic equipment of the BMW 5 Series (E60):

Driver airbag (Airbag), Passenger airbag (Airbag), Side airbags (Airbag), Anti-lock braking system (ABS), Distribution system braking force(EBD, EBV), System exchange rate stability(ESP, VDC, DSC), Emergency braking system (Brake Assist, AFU), Adjustable steering column, Central lock, Front electric windows, Rear electric windows, Light alloy wheels, Fog lights, CD player, Radio, On-board computer, Rain sensor, Cruise control, Power mirrors, Heated mirrors.
