The cylinder block of the new engines is made of aluminum by injection molding and is made with an open cooling jacket, “Open Deck” technology. The cylinder block is cast with individual gray cast iron cylinder liners pre-installed. Their outer surface is rough, so that the surface area is increased and heat transfer to the cylinder block is improved. In addition, it provides a positive positive connection between the cylinder block and the cylinder liner.

Integrated in the cylinder head an exhaust manifold causes hot gases to heat up the engine, bringing it up to operating temperature faster, the interior must now be provided with heat much faster than previous engines.

Instead of a timing chain drive, it is used exclusively toothed belt. The manufacturer recommends using AI-95 gasoline as fuel. True, it is still allowed to use gasoline with an octane rating of at least 91.

The technical characteristics of the motor that was on the test car are as follows: power 110 hp. and 155 Nm, displacement - 1598 cu. cm, compression ratio - 10.5: 1, piston stroke - 86.9 mm. Complies with Euro-5 toxicity standards. It is equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission or a 6-band Aisin automatic transmission.

According to subjective impressions, the 1.6-liter 110-horsepower engine is an excellent choice for supporters of unhurried movement around the city and on a country road. First and foremost, it's economical! When driving dynamically in the city, there is a slight drop in traction when accelerating hard from a standstill ( approx. only 155 Nm), so you have to play more actively with 2nd and 3rd gears of the manual gearbox and not be afraid to step on the gas at the start from the intersection. But if you do not build a racer out of yourself, then the car behaves very predictably and obediently.

Transmissions are short, turn on clearly. Just know for yourself, roll with the speed of the stream. Moreover, the motor even in the third confidently pulls out after a leisurely passage through a sleeping policeman. And to be honest, with such "mechanics" automatic transmission seems like overkill. Especially for older people, to whom, in fact, this tandem of MCP and 1.6 MPi is addressed. Moderately dynamic, but simple and familiar "aspirated" with the usual "mechanics" is not like the complex and resource-intensive TSI with robotic DSG. This means that people have more confidence in him.

Noticeable acceleration is felt from 2500 rpm, and for a more dynamic jerk, you need to turn the motor up to 4000 rpm. So, of course, you won’t save gasoline - the BC in city traffic with a ragged ride showed 9-10 liters per hundred. But if you go out of town, accelerate to 100 km / h and turn on the cruise control - the numbers in front of your eyes will delight you!

At 100 km / h in fifth gear, it turns out a little less than 2500 rpm. At 120 km / h, the speed jumps up to 3000 rpm and consumption increases by about a liter.

I really liked the grip - it “grabs” almost immediately. Just released the pedal - and the car has already smoothly moved forward. Newbie drivers will appreciate it. Especially when parking in front of the house in the evening. Maneuvering between cars, you can not touch the gas pedal at all. Know for yourself: just turn the steering wheel and look at the mirrors.

Unfortunately, everything good and for relatively little money happens only in a fairy tale. Alas, reality quickly puts everything in its place. So this good, well-tailored car shows its obvious budget class, you just have to move off the smooth asphalt.

And if the Rapid suspension eats up minor road defects in the form of a small hole, a joint or a hatch sunk into the asphalt, more or less tolerably, then on a country road any unevenness as the speed increases is clearly felt by the passengers of the Czech liftback. For the sake of experiment, I drove a couple of kilometers along an ordinary Belarusian gravel road and noted for myself that it is not recommended to drive a Rapid along a country road above 40 km / h.

Not the smallest clearance - 170 mm for the Russian (140 mm for the European) version - but the short-travel suspension forgives only relatively flat sections of a gravel road. A small hole or unevenness - immediately slow down, otherwise the risk of striking the lip of the front bumper on the gravel increases many times over. But, interestingly, even upon contact with the ground in the Rapida cabin, one does not feel extraneous sounds. The atmospheric engine does not roar, but quietly purrs under the hood, the wind does not whistle in the mirrors, and the stones do not scrape along the bottom. In general, as for budget class, the sound insulation of the Skoda Rapid is made at a decent level.


For 2 days of close acquaintance, I came up with the following: Skoda Rapid today is the most balanced offer among the new budget cars, based on two main criteria - price and quality.

Renault Logan. After the update, the car has changed, capacity 16 valves. And the air conditioner came out 560t.r. (to the price of the site in my region + 35t.r. for the "delivery" and this is the Dealer!, such is Renault's policy, now it seems to have been canceled). I didn’t try it on the go, they say I began to behave more collected and tougher. And yes, I wanted something else.

Kalina 2. I liked the new interior, suspension (no worse than Logan), but the stereotype about the VAZ, and the price is under 500 tr. for the "Lada" as something too much. It was decided not to sell the car at all, but to move on.

Then I started thinking about other brands. I remembered the Skoda Fabia, like there is a combi. Call to office The dealer, they say there is a Skoda Rapid for 499t.r. and above, not believing my ears, I say well, he's from 600t.r. and then with the engine 1.2 75l.s. 3 cylinders. As a result, I came to the dealer, it turns out that a new 90l.s engine came out. and the new 110hp, both with timing belt, ostensibly for the entire service life. An engine with cast-iron liners, 16 valves, the torque is the same for both (I don’t know what the difference in weight is 15 kg). And the price is now not as before 559t.r., but has become 499t.r. and engine 1.2 3 cylinders, changed to 1.6 90l.s. Sitting in the salon, and having experienced the joy, like from a toy in childhood, and then opening the trunk (liftback is a topic!), It was decided — I TAKE! I find out the prices, they say there are 3 rapids, 2 are already taken, and 1 is free. Price 544t.r., 499+ metallic color and air conditioning. He booked it. With new model range added ESP and ASR (traction control) in the database. I wanted to order for 572t.r. a complete set where there would be electric mirrors, heated seats, a seat back divided into 2 parts and a folding key, but I was afraid of a price increase (the car would have come in September, I think I was lucky, because prices have recently increased).

Now about the car itself:

Engine: Like new 90hp 16 valves, runs quietly, pulls perfectly from idle, to its 90hp. works out completely. Dynamics like VAZ 2114, maybe a little worse Priora. While running 2800km, nothing much to say. I drove 600 km at 40 liters, 300 on the highway and 300 in the city (there were also traffic jams), the average is 6.7l, I don’t know if it’s a lot or a little. Declared track 4.8, the city like 7.6.

Gearbox: Mechanics 5 mortar, clarity like an AK 47 shutter, no vibrations, reverse gear it always turns on without a crunch (almost always crunches on Logan and VAZs). The gears are optimal in length, at a speed of 100 km per hour, the revolutions are 2400, at 120 km per hour - 2900 rpm.

Body: The metal is not quite a foil, it is well processed from the factory, the hood seems to be heavy and the metal is thicker than on Logan (cannot be compared with Rio and Solaris). I think the liftback body is perfect, it looks like a sedan, while more than a hatchback. The trunk is 550 liters, with the seats unfolded 1480 liters! The back, unlike Logan, is folded (in my complete set, not 60/40).

Suspension: There was rubber for 14 Euro Kama, I immediately replaced it with 15, Dunlop SP Touring T1 bought tires, on bad pavement there is a rumble from noise, it even resonates in the cabin. Managed well, rolls are minimal. In general, the suspension is harsh, while at a speed of 130 km per hour with small waves, it allows buildup. Logan allowed even more, in this regard, the VAZ 2110 goes like glued! When you press on the body, it flexes very easily, while with a full trunk and 3 people in the back, you don’t even sit down. It is much more difficult to push the VAZ 2110 from behind, as well as from the front. Skoda can be shaken, it feels like the shock absorbers do not hold at all. Apparently, with a sharper operation, they still hold it, because. There is no buildup at the back, apparently such settings. The EUR at speeds up to 30-40 km per hour is very light, at 100-120 km per hour the steering becomes heavy, I really like it.

Salon: The design is strict, something similar to the Lancer 9 (ideal for me). It is spacious everywhere, there is plenty of legroom in the back, but it let us down in width in the back, even the seat, as it were, hints at the shape, the third is superfluous. There are no scripts yet. I have a base, the door handles in the cabin are just black, not chrome. At the same time, there is no feeling that they saved on you (as in the old Logan, not to mention the first body).

ABS, ESP, ASR have not yet worked, only when slipping once did ASR light up, but I really skidded. I thought it would work and choke the engine even at the slightest slip.

Conclusion: The usual budget car, something worse than something better than Logan and Rio / Solaris. The main thing that stands out is good handling, an advantageous liftback body, and a spacious interior.

The 1.6 MPI engine, released in 2014, is a new unit of the EA211 family, which also includes turbo engines, but I will talk specifically about the CWVA aspirated engine, which is installed on many VAG cars. In particular, these are VW Polo, Jetta, Golf MK7, Skoda Octavia, Rapid, Yeti.

This aspirated engine replaced the 1.2 TSI turbocharged engine on the Russian market, which is demanding on fuel quality and has problems with a stretching timing chain. And he also played the fact that in Russia they do not like engines with a very small volume, and they prefer aspirated engines, or turbos, with a volume of at least 1.4 liters.

In Europe, by the way, VAG cars are not equipped with such an engine, since almost all of them are turbocharged.

Our 1.6 MPI engine is a four-cylinder, 16-valve, timing belt engine. By the way, on the EA111 family, including the 1.2 TSI, there was a timing chain. Here, the engineers not only replaced the chain with a belt, but also connected the exhaust manifold to the head of the block - it turned out to be a single whole. The Germans simplified the design as much as possible in order to increase efficiency and reduce costs, given that the currency has also risen now, and in order for sales not to fall, it is necessary to optimize costs.

According to the regulations, the timing belt on this engine runs 120,000 km. However, due to the relatively recent release of the internal combustion engine, no one has yet verified this. But I advise you to check its work every 60,000 km or even earlier in order to avoid misunderstandings.

The main problems, disadvantages of this unit are so far in the “zhora” of oil and leaks in the timing belt area. If the first problem is the most common, then the second is extremely rare, but dealers still fix it under warranty. In particular, one of the owners of the Yeti noticed a similar leak, reacted in time by contacting the dealer. The result is a leak from the camshaft seals. Replaced seals under warranty.

Zhor oil at 1.6 MPI CWVA is very common. Moreover, the dealers themselves say that before the break-in, this is a completely normal story. For example, 0.2-0.4 liters of oil can go per 1000 kilometers, which is a lot. Then, as they say, the oil burner disappears, however, the owners insist that they still have to add oil.

One experiment was conducted during which one of the owners of Rapid with such an internal combustion engine managed to “kill” the oil eater. Previously, as the dealers said, he filled in the recommended engine oil Castrol Edge 5w30 504/507. Then I tried to change it to another - Liqui Moly Synthoil High Tech 5W-30 which solved the problem. Perhaps this is an isolated case, and you have not had and will not have this, but the fact remains.

Compared to the 1.2 TSI engine, this aspirated is less technologically advanced and has less traction, however, buyers are more relaxed about it due to the lack of a turbine and timing chain.

As for the resource, it will quietly pass without overhaul 250-300 thousand kilometers and even more, provided that the owner will closely monitor the oil level and change it during it, and also change other consumables. And fill in high-quality gasoline - AI-95 is recommended, but 92nd is also possible.
