The cladding itself has lost the transverse lamellae and gained a very sporty-looking cellular structure. That's probably all...

Well, the words of Antoine de Saint-Exupery, who said more than once that “perfection is achieved not when there is nothing to add, but when there is nothing to take away,” perfectly fits the strict and minimalist design of maestro Ikuo Maeda.






Well, what has changed then? To understand the issue, it is worth remembering the history of the model.

What to do about noise?

Launched in 2012, the CX-5 has easily replaced several more large crossover CX-7 and immediately began to score points. In three years, its share in the segment grew from 3.8% to 7.8%.

After 2014, when sales of the entire group of crossovers sank somewhat due to a shift in buyers' interest in budget models of the B + segment, the indicators, of course, worsened somewhat, but then went up again and today they are about 8%. At the same time, the following trends were also observed: interest in versions with mechanical box and growth in sales of variants with powerful engines, as well as top trim levels. Brand specialists closely followed the ratings given to the CX-5 by both journalists and car owners, carefully recording both what they like and what causes reasonable criticism.





And if the dynamics and controllability of the crossover caused complete and unconditional approval for almost everyone, then the bulk of the complaints turned out to be related to noise and driving comfort. Indeed, at some point, a high level of noise (primarily from the wheel) was a characteristic feature of almost all Mazda models, becoming the flip side of a stiff, tightly knocked down suspension, sharpened for high controllability. It is very difficult to deal with such noise: high-frequency vibrations that occur when the wheels move along the road surface are transmitted through the suspension elements to the body, which acts as a resonator.


Technical solutions to this problem are known: it is necessary to introduce into the design multi-link suspensions quite complex changes and place them on separate subframes with their own cushioning. But the introduction of such technical solutions, typical for cars in the premium segment, raises the price of models to sky-high heights, but the company’s management could not go for this. But something had to be done...

New or not?

As a result, it was decided to follow the path of quantitative changes. The stiffness of the springs has been reduced, but to ensure that this reduction in stiffness does not lead to a deterioration in handling, the stiffness of the steering rack has been increased and the settings of the G-vectoring control system have been changed. The car gained almost 40 kg, and almost all of this weight gain came from additional noise insulation. In particular, the plastic covers of the wheel arches in the trunk were completely covered with a soft soundproofing coating. A special “acoustic” glass was used in the car, the wiper blades were removed from the oncoming air flow, lowering them a little lower under the rear edge of the hood. The design of the door seals has changed. As a result, Mazda employees claim that, according to objective measurements of the noise level, the CX-5 can compete with such premium models as the Jaguar F-Pace and BMW X3!

But noise isn't everything. No less important is general comfort in the cabin. Drivers of the new CX-5 will definitely like the new, higher-quality interior materials, soft front panel with fashionable stitching, heated steering wheel and wiper blade rest areas ... And yet, from my point of view, the most important novelty was the direct view projection display. Mazda used a fairly inexpensive, but very effective solution: the information is not projected directly onto the windshield, but on an inclined transparent screen located directly behind the instrument panel visor. Relatively recently, while traveling around Israel on a brand new Mazda 3, I was fully convinced of the convenience of such a device: your eyes do not take your eyes off the road, and the current speed readings and navigator tips hang right in front of your eyes. I will not tire of repeating that HUD (“direct sight displays”) are very convenient and, more importantly, they are an essential element in ensuring active safety.


As for rear passengers, then they will be pleased with the opportunity to change the angle of the backrest of their seats. electric drive tailgate everyone will like it, and not even so much as additional comfort in itself, but as evidence of the car's transition to a new level. Mazda designers decided not to change everything else, guided by the principle “they don’t look for good from good”.


In general, the information received during the presentation made it possible to agree that the new Mazda CX-5 can indeed be considered the second generation. Indeed, although each of the changes is more quantitative than qualitative, according to the second law of Hegelian dialectics, quantitative changes, accumulating, lead to a qualitative leap.

And if earlier, speaking about the noise in the cabin, I frankly wrote “I recognize Mazda sister” even when it was about the flagship model CX-9, now the CX-5 can confidently claim a place in the leading group, if not on the market in in general, then in its segment for sure.

I still leave the question of the comfort of the suspension open: after all, the autodrome track and public roads are quite different things. But the fact that the model has retained the enthusiasm characteristic of the brand - I am ready to subscribe to this statement.


We had the opportunity to do three laps each with the 2.0 and 2.5 liter SKYACTIVE engines, and what struck me the most was that the wheel noise was virtually gone. There were no aerodynamic noises, and even during the most active acceleration in the cabin it was possible to talk in an undertone.

Naturally, the two-liter version turned out to be a little noisier: to achieve the same effect in terms of acceleration, the engine had to be revved up a little more actively. Naturally, the more powerful version turned out to be livelier and more obedient. But both fully corresponded to the Jinbo Ittai principle adopted in the company (“Jinbo Ittai” is an ancient Japanese art of riding, in which the main thing is to achieve unity between the rider and the horse). But you know what? When choosing a Mazda CX-5 for myself, I would prefer the more affordable two-liter 150-horsepower version. And I would spend the difference in money on saturating the car with “comfortable” options, since the speed and dynamic parameters of the car fully cover the real needs of everyday use. The dynamics are enough both in the city and on the highway ...
