1 Options for self-tuning ZAZ 1102

Given the dimensions of the car and a rather plain appearance, at the initial stage of tuning, they improve external characteristics. The scope for imagination in this case is huge, since for this car you can create various options for body kits, spoilers, linings that are made from improvised materials. In addition, tuning kits from domestically produced cars, such as the VAZ 2106, are suitable for Tavria, and in the process of tuning the engine, suspension and chassis, VAZ classics, as a rule, various details are borrowed.

You can install additional side sills on the ZAZ 1102 with your own hands, which are made of plastic or sheet metal - they also help to increase the rigidity and stability of the body. As parts of the body kit, many tuners are finalizing the front and rear bumpers of the car. At this stage, either the old bumper is modernized by installing additional plastic, or another set of bumpers is customized with your own hands, which you can pick up in size or make yourself using materials such as fiberglass, polystyrene foam, glue, putty, paint.

Next, you can install a hood deflector, improve the ventilation of the hood cover, install an aerodynamic intake on the roof and other details. In addition to improving the aerodynamic properties, the external tuning of Tavria involves the installation of more pumped larger diameter wheels, sports tires, muffler lining, glass tinting and the installation of large rear-view mirrors that can be borrowed from a foreign car, as well as the modernization of headlights with the installation of xenon or LEDs in standard lenses . Painting or airbrushing is more expensive options external tuning, however, with their help you can achieve the maximum effect.

2 Do-it-yourself engine replacement

The capabilities of this car are far from ideal. "Tavria" is equipped with a 1.1-liter gasoline engine of the MeMZ-245 series with a capacity of 53 horsepower. With serious tuning, when, along with a simple installation of a sports air filter and modernization of the exhaust system, it is also necessary to achieve a significant increase in the power indicator, it is better to replace the factory motor.

It changes to an engine from the VAZ 2108 or a simpler analogue from the "six" VAZ 2106, which fits the Tavria five-speed gearbox with an adapter. After that, all the necessary work is carried out on boring cylinders, installing adapters, lightening the flywheel, installing new gears, etc.

However, engine tuning on the ZAZ 1102 model does not always mean replacing it, there are options for upgrading the factory engine, but they all come down to installing a turbocharger from a foreign car and two carburetors. Such tuning will require painstaking work on setting the pressure, adjusting the composition fuel mixture etc. At a cost, such work is comparable to tuning a decent foreign car, so few can afford a turbocharger with all the modifications on the ZAZ 1102.

If replacing the engine or installing a supercharger is not included in your plans, then you can install in a pair with the factory engine: a reliable and powerful gasoline pump (a model from GAZ 3110 is perfect), new spark plugs, such as NGK or Bosch Platinum, a filter zero resistance Prosport, as well as a new carburetor, such as Solex. It is also possible to bore the internal channels of the cylinder head from the standard 27 to 29 millimeters. exhaust system, for example, and not just the nozzle.

Unfortunately, for the owners of this car model, due to the lack of an injector and, accordingly, an engine control unit, it is not possible to chip-tune the engine.

3 Reliable undercarriage upgrade

After external tuning and modernization of the engine, for a complete balance, it is necessary to carry out a high-quality revision of the chassis with your own hands. It is recommended to change the brake system. The best option there will be disc brakes with calipers from VAZ models of the 10th family and rear "drums" from VAZ 2108-09. This combination will allow you to install new wheel disks and more sporty tires, slicks or something similar in performance.

Together with the replacement of the brakes, you can install new shock absorbers and springs, which need to be slightly trimmed (by 1-1.5 centimeters) to reduce ground clearance and improve aerodynamics. Some experts with changing disks advise installing other parts of the VAZ chassis - levers, hubs, and make negative camber wheels, which will affect the stability of the vehicle. And of course, don't forget about the new clutch, you can use the Craft-Tech kit or more affordable options.

Thus, with the investment of money and time from a car with a 53-horse engine and modest capabilities, you can create a car for participating in drag races or a decent car with good speed and improved handling with your own hands. All the changes presented will not significantly affect fuel consumption, and when installing a turbine or a new unit with cylinder bores, we recommend using fuel with a higher octane rating.

In our country, everything is the same as in Europe, but with a national flavor. For example, the heroine of our article is black Tavria. The light small body is really taken as a basis. Initially, the car was conceived as an apparatus for the soul and for amateur rides at 402 meters. Turbocharge stock engine Melitopol plant - it makes no sense and he went straight to a landfill, and under the hood a VAZ engine was registered under the index 21083. The engine capacity was increased to 1600 cubic meters by replacing the knee. A shaft from MM was implanted into the head of the block. The rest of the specs of the first engine were not disclosed, but it is known that the car quite successfully participated in races at the observation deck and in regional events. Moreover, she could well move in dense city traffic without requiring special effort from the driver and passengers.

Any tuner who becomes the owner of such a miracle of the Soviet automobile industry as Tavria sooner or later decides for himself the dilemma of tuning the MeMZ engine, which is unpromising. Or throw it away and put the engine from the eight with the declared volume of 1300 (in reality, you understand, the volume can be completely different). In order to put this engine in a light Ukrainian body, you only need to change the mounts power unit. The fact is that the installation of such a motor, in principle, is quite legal and Tavria can be registered with it. This happened due to the fact that in the early years of the front-wheel drive automotive industry in our then common homeland with the Ukrainians, a batch of Tavria with a 2108 engine (1300 cc) was produced and, accordingly, approval was received for such a design. vehicle. Add here the widest range of tuning parts for VAZ engines and you will understand that Tavria-tuner has no other alternative.

After installing the motor, the appearance of the car was not left without attention - the native white color was densely painted over with demonic black. With stunning body work and a huge exhaust brought under the threshold, the herbivorous Tavriolet turned into a devil ... well, okay, into a devil, but still very fast and dangerous. The front bumper was taken from a tuning kit designed for the G8, the standard headlights and grille were also replaced with a tuning part designed for 4 headlights from the VAZ 2106. It is believed that they shine better than the standard "Tauride" optics. The tail part of the body is also pretty redone. The bumper was taken from the "Miller Pilot" body kit, again designed for the VAZ 2108. The original lights are actually made from 6 ceiling lights for the UAZ interior. Massive sills and huge arch extensions that give the car an even more menacing look are made of steel.

After the little devil pumped up his muscles and got a decent appearance, it's time to do more trivial things like brakes and suspension. In order not to break the tradition, a supersport eight Plaza and sawn eight springs were installed in the front suspension. They, by the way, get up the same way with minimal alterations. On the rear axle the legendary Plaza Sport is working with shortened springs. Together with the installation of the suspension, the hubs were changed to vosmerochnye. Now it became possible to put normal brakes and normal wheels. After all, Tavria does not have a rim as such in stock, but there is only a wheel rim. The front brakes from the VAZ 2112 fit perfectly on the new hubs, and the rear brakes based on eight brake discs and calipers feel great in the back. Everything in the brakes of the car is good except that there is no handbrake at all. Next on the list were wheels - understand us correctly, we are not against good casting on a wheelbarrow, but when the simplest ones are molded onto a really beautiful and original body, painted black silver discs, we immediately recall one women's TV show, the chip of which is in the phrase "remove it immediately!".

In stock, Tavria has a very Spartan interior, in the spirit of English writhings such as Caterham, Volodya, the owner of the little devil, does not seek excessive comfort, so he replaced only the most necessary. The driver's seat has been successfully replaced with a Recaro bucket, the passenger seat has been replaced with a Honda Civic. Just as surprisingly uncomfortable, the stock steering wheel has given way to a Prosport rally steering wheel with a stem. In the standard, Tavria does not have a very convenient instrument cluster - it is a little more convenient here. For some reason, 2 tachometers were made: a chic Autogage and a poor one from the VAZ 2106. True, the oil pressure, temperature and fuel level instruments are very well located on the center console. A little lower there was a place for the Kenwood head unit.

Initially this car
purchased mainly for work, courier trips around the city
and beyond. At the same time, the owner of Tavria remained a constant participant
street racing, in which she "passed the run-in".

The fact that this car was subjected to tuning, its future owner knew
even before the purchase - in fact, it was so with all his previous cars.

First steps

While the car was used as a workhorse, tuning was limited
installing a split gear on the camshaft, and in the exhaust
system instead of a standard muffler, a second resonator appeared. As a result, the sound
the engine became louder, and the dynamics and maximum speed car
slightly increased. Having left 110 thousand km in a year and a half, this car lost
workplace Mercedes E 250. They decided to “charge” Tavria to the fullest
program.

Youth

To begin with, a "spider" with a 4 in 1 scheme was installed on the engine, after which
exhaust gases were removed through the "corrugation" and a straight pipe topped with a direct-flow
silencer. In the manufacture of such a system, a stainless steel pipe was used.
steel with a diameter of 50 mm. The carburetor and body have also been modified.
air filter, from which the entire side part has been removed.

In the exterior of the car, they decided to change almost nothing: the appearance of the Tavria
should have been recognizable. Were limited only to the installation of locks on
hood, mudguards and tuning exterior mirrors Race Look. Due to the lack
in the sale of tuning optics for Tavria, the owner decided to simply change
native design. For this, it was necessary to develop a special paint that passes
light, moreover, its components and proportions were selected experimentally.

The interior has also been reworked. The place of the regular steering wheel was taken by the steering wheel of the company
Simony Racing, and the usual seats were replaced with sports buckets. In car

gears, allowing you to quickly manipulate the lever. Instead of regular
instrument panel with a polished aluminum panel on the driver "looks"
a tachometer installed in the middle, and temperature gauges are located on the sides
water and oil pressure. It was decided to get rid of the speedometer. On the torpedo
a red starter button appeared, by pressing which the engine starts.
To reduce weight, the car was stripped rear seat, interior decorative
cladding and soundproofing.

The regular braking system of "Tavria" was changed almost completely. After
hub regrinding front ventilated brake discs were installed
from VAZ-2110 and sports brake pads. Having completed all these works, filled
synthetic brake fluid Champion DOT-5. Due to hub changes
and brake system, it became necessary to install new wheels. Choice
fell on aluminum alloy wheels with 185/50 R14 tires.

To increase the stiffness of the suspension, instead of standard shock absorbers,
gas-filled Plaza-sport. True, later they seemed to the owner not enough
rigid and were replaced by pre-finished ones (shortened shock absorber rod)
products of the Ukrainian automotive industry - Melitopol oil sports
racks. The suspension itself was lowered - in front by 75, and in the back by 80 mm.

After such improvements, acceleration to 100 km / h began to take about 11 seconds.
But this result did not impress the owner, so the decision was made
take a firm grip on the engine.

Maturity

Engine tuning began with an increase in its working volume from 1.2 to 1.3 liters
by boring cylinders to a diameter of 75 mm. Cranks lightened by 130 grams
each, removing a piece of metal on a milling machine. In turn, to increase
compression ratio from the cylinder head and block in the places of their contact with the gasket
1 mm of metal was removed. In the timing, the most significant alterations touched
cylinder head, in which the intake manifolds were bored and polished
and exhaust channels (inlet diameter increased from 25 to 30, and exhaust - from
24 to 29 mm). Instead of a standard camshaft, a sports one was installed,
with 2 mm increased cam height. The valves have changed the shape of the plates,
removing chamfers from them, chromed the rods to increase the stiffness of the springs
pads were placed under them. Intake manifold polished and installed
modified Solex carburetor with diffusers increased to 24/26
mm. As a result, the engine now confidently spins up to 8.5 thousand
revolutions.

In the transmission, again for the sake of dynamics, they installed the main pair from
Daewoo Sens - it differs from the standard gear ratio 4,1.

Now the car accelerates to "hundreds" in 8 seconds, and its maximum
speed reaches 190 km / h.

But even this result could not fully satisfy the owner of Tavria.
The next step is to install a new engine. What? The owner is faced with a choice:
or stop at the power unit from the VAZ-2108 and increase its volume
up to 1.6 liters, or prefer the engine from the VW Golf 1.8 liters. Regular carburetor
will replace the Weber steam, the air supply to them will be carried out through the air intake
in the hood. The salon will “acquire” a welded safety cage and a system
firefighting.

P.S. Now the owner uses a white one as a working car
pickup truck based on ZAZ-1102. And knowing the character of the owner of this car, we can assume
that a “charged” Zaporozhye pickup truck will soon appear on our roads.

Unlike many projects that start with a car - available or desired - this one started with ... a motor. In 2008, in Evgeny’s garage, a swap kit was “littered” that included an Opel C20XE engine with a mileage of 183 thousand kilometers, a gearbox and drives from.

In amateur tuning projects of those years, atmospheric VAZs made up the bulk, and turbocharged experiments were at the beginning of their development. Therefore, the task was set as ambitious as possible: to assemble a stable, fast, reliable, as light as possible and at the same time not prohibitively expensive car.

Since the issue with the power unit had already been resolved, it remained only to choose where to implant it. Popular options like the VAZ-2108 were too heavy, and besides, banal. Puzzling over the choice, Eugene at the same time broke the stereotypes: he chose the ZAZ-1102 Tavria as a base: far from ideal forms, with controversial engineering solutions and literally a cardboard body, but outperforming the VAZ-2108 in weight more than 200 kilograms.



Outside

The new motor, and later the subframe, proper suspension, hubs, brakes and safety cage added significantly to the total weight of Tavria. The fight against the gained kilos began with attachments. Everything “extra” was cut out of the doors and the hood, the glasses were replaced with polycarbonate (with the exception of the windshield and driver's side).


The gutted, cut, but at the same time radically reinforced body did not actually change outwardly and remained recognizable. The color has been updated with a warm white paint job and 15-inch forged wheels added to the look, more for 288mm brake discs than beauty.


In general, every detail in the project has an exclusively functional focus, making Tavria stronger, faster or more resilient. For example, the front bumper is not an attention-grabbing attribute, but an aerodynamic element with a continuing flat bottom, creating a rarefaction zone at high speeds and at the same time covering the custom subframe and low-hanging engine.


Inside


The standard front seats and rear sofa weighed excessively. To reduce weight and a fixed fit for the driver and passenger during active driving, the native seats were replaced with Sparco fiberglass buckets. The factory seat belts have been replaced with 3-point ones. The steering wheel is made in Italy - Nardi.

The standard dashboard did not want to be friends with the Opel scales, and therefore it was removed, and for information content, essential instruments were added to the cabin: coolant temperature, oil pressure, gasoline level and tachometer. Noise isolation, ceiling lining, door cards, carpets and other attributes of a comfortable (as far as this word is applicable to Tavria) car moved to the trash heap.




Technique

The first priority of the project was the successful Opel engine under the hood of Tavria. And in this particular case, it was complicated not even by the need to splice wiring or adapt adjacent nodes, but by the banal size of the power unit itself - it was not so easy to introduce it into a small-caliber ZAZ.


The outstanding lightness of the Tavria body is due to the outstanding (more precisely, outstanding) quality and quantity of metal, including in power elements. Anyone who has at least indirectly dealt with such machines has heard more than one story about torn-off glasses of the front struts, a rear beam coming off, the front part leaving separately from the rear, and other joys of operation. In this regard, the installation of the C20XE engine began with cleaning and welding of native seams, strengthening the “muzzle” and installing a roll cage. To minimize vibrations, the motor is placed on rigid supports (with a minimum amount of rubber) made of silent blocks.




With the new motor, they did not forget about the brakes. The front now has 288 mm ventilated mechanisms on a compound disc with a Volga caliper. New engine significantly loaded the front axle, as a result of which it was necessary to select springs and shock absorbers for the increased load and make custom upper AL mounts.


For four years the car was operated with a stock motor, except for a slightly raised pressure. fuel system, ECU programs from a non-catalyst engine and exhaust on the 63rd pipe. Improvements during this period affected the suspension and bodywork.


But in one of the off-seasons, curiosity led to the opening of the motor: after all, the mileage at that time had already crossed the mark of 200,000 km, 20,000 of which were rolled back in active mode. Zhenya saw minor scuffs, in which experienced garage craftsmen, after changing the rings and lapping the valves, usually assemble the motor back with the words “still looks like it”. But in the conditions of combat operation, he decided to break all the available student piggy banks and order new spare parts.


Accralite forged pistons, lightweight and durable H-shaped connecting rods, a QED throttle assembly and QED camshafts with solid tappets were chosen. The block underwent the installation of oil nozzles and boring for new pistons, the crankshaft was balanced in conjunction with the flywheel and clutch, and the cylinder head was manually ported. Valves, seats and combustion chambers were modified, bushing guides were replaced, duralumin valve plates were made. The power system has evolved from metal and rubber to reinforced hoses on AN fittings. The fuel storage was replaced with a 45 liter ATL tank with an anti-drain system installed inside. There are now three fuel pumps: two auxiliary pumps pumping from the main tank into the anti-drain cup, and the main Bosch 044 pump that feeds the engine. The pressure in the system is monitored by the Aeromotive fuel regulator.


It became obvious that the native “brain” could no longer cope with the management of the replenished herd of horses under the hood. In order to curb power and make adjustments during further operation, the control unit was replaced on January 5.1.41 with subsequent tuning.

The width of the wheelbase of Opel and Tavria is different - obviously not in favor of the latter. Therefore, the drive shafts had to be shortened and welded. The solution is not entirely reliable, and several times the drives vomited. To avoid problems in the future, we decided to make drive shafts from a steel bar of grade 30KhGSA. External grenades were replaced with more wear-resistant ones from a 2-liter Opel, for this it was only necessary to regrind the hubs.


Measurement at the stand became a kind of exam, because the motor was assembled by hand. Bottom line: 252 forces and 277 Nm from the flywheel (on the factory exhaust manifold).

It was not easy for the native clutch to keep the received numbers. So in the next off-season, the heavy flywheel was replaced with a duralumin one, of our own production. The clutch disc was installed ceramic-metal, of a smaller diameter (in comparison with the native one) and a modified basket.


Exploitation

Initially, this Tavria was a weekend car, but as custom units were run in, it grew into an everyday one. However, with the purchase of a second car, she again turned into a car for the weekend. The owner also practiced winter operation, but after two winters weak body began to rust. Sore spots had to be treated in two weeks of painstaking work.

The project was conceived as a field for the implementation of their own ideas. A specific task like drag racing or time attacks was not set before the car. As a result, the car was also tested in races for 402 meters, and drove a couple of sessions on ring roads near Moscow, where a weak braking system (namely pads) proved to be.

Plans

In fact, this Tavria is an integral completed project, but if desired, it can be redesigned for a certain type of competition. For example, for racing in a straight line, you have to buy wide rims for drag slicks and work on lightening again, and for circuit racing, you need to install oil radiator, sports pads and slightly stiffer rear springs. But the owner still prefers not to turn it into cramps completely. For him, it is rather a nimble city car.
