Vaz classic. Do-it-yourself cool “classic”: all about tuning the Zhiguli

The history of AvtoVAZ began precisely with a rear-wheel drive line of cars, which is why they are called the VAZ classic. The first model was copied from the Fiata 124, VAZ 2101. Over time, this car has become a legend. In the station wagon body, the VAZ 2102 was produced. After it, there was a slight restyling, and so the trio was born - the VAZ 2103.

The station wagon VAZ 2105 and 2104 differed from the previous models in appearance (it became more square) and a redesigned interior.

The “six” VAZ 2106 became a truly popular car. Increased engine power and improved appearance had a good effect on sales of this car. For the first time, the dipped and main beam headlights were separated. Also, the rear lights have been changed and become more modern.

Only a true fan of VAZ can distinguish at a glance the “seven” VAZ 2107 from the VAZ 2105. The most noticeable differences between these cars are the hood and seats. On the later model, the bonnet has 2 stamped stripes and the seats are fitted with head restraints to add to the comfort of this cabin.

In this regard, the question arises of how to replace the ignition switch on a VAZ 2106. How to remove the ignition switch on a VAZ 2106. Before ...

The idea of building an automobile plant of unprecedented scale was born at the very top. Its initiator was the Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR A.N. Kosygin, who was supported by Brezhnev himself. In the country, the amount of money not backed by goods was growing, and a mass car could become a necessary lifesaver: citizens would willingly give their savings for it. In addition, a modern car that was in demand abroad was supposed to improve the export position of the country, which bought more for foreign currency than sold.

The search for partners was carried out without too much publicity. Even the KGB was involved in this activity, in particular L. Kolosov, the Izvestia correspondent in Italy, and part-time employee of the all-powerful committee. The choice fell on the FIAT concern - it offered the most profitable terms. In Italy, with its traditionally strong leftist movement, a general strike was going on at the time, and the contract with the Soviets greatly helped straighten out the financial position of the concern. In the USSR, of course, they took into account the fact that in 1966 the FIAT-124 became the car of the year in Europe.

The General Agreement was signed on August 8 of the same year in Moscow. The documents were signed by the head of FIAT Vittorio Valletta and the Minister of the Automobile Industry of the USSR A.M. Tarasov. They decided to build the plant on the banks of the Volga (the presence of the river solved many transport problems), in the young city of Togliatti. Previously, there was Stavropol-on-Volga, partially flooded after the construction of the hydroelectric power station, but the city was built almost anew under the auto giant. One of the reasons for choosing the site was precisely the presence of powerful construction organizations.

Soon, several FIAT-124 cars were brought to the USSR, which went to comprehensive tests. They were driven all over the country, from the Crimea to Vorkuta, where, of course, they were delivered by railway. Work was also carried out at the not fully rebuilt Dmitrovsky training ground. As a result, the FIAT-124R (R means Russia) began to be born, noticeably different from the standard "Italian".

DESIGN

Outwardly, the VAZ-2101 differed from FIAT only in more massive bumper fangs, recessed door handles and, of course, emblems. But for stuffing soviet car was very different.

FIAT-124 was not a technical revelation even in the mid-1960s. classic layout, dependent suspension rear wheels, four-speed transmission - no better than most competitors. The engine with a lower camshaft was also in line with the trends familiar to a mass car of those years. But the VAZ-2101 engine, although it retained the working volume of the Fiat engine, received a different center-to-center distance and an upper camshaft in the block head - the Soviet delegation insisted on this innovation, visiting Italian factories and noting that FIAT is actively developing engines with upper shafts.

This innovation will then greatly backfire on the reputation of VAZ cars, when the camshafts begin to fail en masse - the problem will be solved far from one year later. In the meantime, the design of the tender 124th is being actively processed for the harsh Soviet life. The operating conditions of the car were assumed to be tough, so the diameter of the clutch disc lining was increased from 182 to 220 mm, the gearbox was redesigned, the rear suspension was changed, “removing” the shock absorbers from the springs to facilitate their subsequent replacement.

They abandoned disc brakes at the rear, because on the roads of the Soviet hinterland they were very dirty and wore out quickly. By the way, later FIAT on the descendants of the 124th returned to the rear drum brakes. Reinforced ball bearings, springs, in many places - the body. A hole for the crank appeared in the front bumper (it was again abandoned starting with the VAZ-2105), and under both bumpers there were towing eyes.

In the 1970s, the VAZ-2101 and its successors were quite competitive even in the Western European market. Indeed, in principle, buyers received the well-known FIAT at a noticeably lower price - dumping was the basis for the success of Soviet cars from the very first years of export abroad. In the socialist countries, Zhiguli were generally in short supply - for example, in the GDR, in order to receive the coveted car, one had to stand in line for more than ten years.

A lot of the novelties of automotive technology in the USSR for the first time massively appeared precisely on the Zhiguli. Before the VAZ-2101, disc brakes were installed only on passenger ZILs. In 1972, the VAZ-2103 was equipped with vacuum booster brakes, tachometer, electric clock. In 1975, the headrests of the front seats appeared on the Six. In 1980, on the VAZ-2105 - the first Zhiguli with completely new (except for the roof) body panels - an engine with a timing belt drive, block headlights combined with marker lights and direction indicators. Two years later, the VAZ-2107 appeared with anatomical seats equipped with built-in headrests.

In addition to the base engine with a volume of 1.2 liters, versions 1.3 were later released; 1.5 and 1.6 liters, differing in diameter and piston stroke. In the 1980s, a five-speed gearbox appeared on the Zhiguli. VAZ was the first in the USSR, albeit in small series, to produce modifications with single injection (VAZ-21073) and diesel (VAZ-21045).

But by the end of the second decade of Lada production, against the background of classmates, they already looked like aliens from a long time ago. The interior is cramped, the engine power is low, the brakes are weak. Carburetor engines did not meet the tightening environmental standards. All this was exacerbated by a decrease in the quality of components and assembly.

The latest Lada-2107 (the name Zhiguli quietly fell out of use), the production of which in Togliatti was discontinued this summer (however, like the VAZ-2104, it will still be assembled in Izhevsk for a couple of years), retained the main features of distant ancestors . The main difference: 73 hp injection engine. at 5300 rpm (the carburetor version developed 77 hp at 5600 rpm), corresponding to Euro-3 standards. In all other respects, it was no longer the model whose owners were less fortunate citizens in the early 1980s looked enviously sighing. During post-perestroika modernizations and optimizations, it was gradually simplified in detail and not only. In recent years, the differences between the fifth and seventh models have been reduced mainly to external design.

MODIFICATIONS, PROTOTYPES, RARE

In addition to the main models, many modifications were produced with various combinations of engines and bodies. This diversity was due primarily to the specific requirements of foreign markets, where the buyer demanded an offer various engines even in budget class.

In addition, VAZ-21073 with central fuel injection was produced in small quantities, cars with rotary engines(mainly for the police and special services), VAZ-21045 with a 53-horsepower diesel engine. For export, cars were also delivered with a right-hand drive, in which, due to a change in weight distribution (a technical curiosity!) The front right springs were strengthened.

Noticeable improvements required the Canadian market - many remember the "six" with specially designed massive bumpers on gas-filled shock absorbers.

In the 1990s, under the VIS brand (VAZinterService), they began producing trucks based on the VAZ-2105, later - 2107; an interesting combination of the “five” and its own “heel” based on the “Oda” was built by the Izhevsk Automobile Plant.

RELATIVES ABROAD

In Italy until 1974 FIAT-124 in different options(including with a 70-horsepower overhead engine, which was installed on the version of "124 Special" - an analogue of the VAZ-2103), more than 1.5 million copies were produced. Until 1972, the FIAT-125 was produced - a model that looks like the 124th, but built on the platform of the old 1300/1500 family with a spring rear suspension and an increased wheelbase. The last descendant of the family is the FIAT-131, vaguely similar to the VAZ-2105, but with a MacPherson-type front suspension, it was built until 1984.

Under the SEAT brand, analogues of our Zhiguli were produced in Spain. About 900,000 models 124 and its further variant 1430 were built in the Pyrenees.

Approximately 1.5 million FIAT Model 125s were made under license in Poland. The release continued until 1980. It took even longer to build the Polonaise, with which the 125th shared many knots.

Versions of the 124th were also produced in South Korea, Argentina, Bulgaria, India (Premier 118) and Turkey. In the latter, variations on the theme of the 131s were also made, different versions were named "Tofash-Murat", "Serche", "Shahin", "Dogan", "Kartal". They were built until the mid-1990s.

THE GREAT ITALIAN REVOLUTION

No exaggeration! "Zhiguli" really became the reason for serious transformations in the Soviet industry and all life.

Even at the pre-production stage at the main plant and at subcontractors, some GOSTs had to be changed. The former did not provide the proper accuracy and quality of components required by Italian technology. The factories of the USSR have mastered modern components and assemblies. And the consumer received an unusual car.

Lada

Lada

Easy start, fast and efficient interior heating. Excellent dynamics and strong brakes. And, most importantly, reliability! The machines did not require constant tightening, adjustment, lubrication. The first years of the car's life, in fact, it was necessary only to change the oil, sometimes to perform simple preventive operations. This created a new type of owners. Increasingly, they were people who were far from technology, who did not go into the device of the car and willingly trusted its maintenance and repair to professionals.

The park private cars grew at a rate unprecedented in the country. And with it, problems. AT big cities there was a shortage of parking lots and garages (with the current one, however, cannot be compared). Remember Eldar Ryazanov's "Garage": what passions raged between those who wanted to get a house for a car that was by no means cheap, but still in short supply. Comedy film is not as far from life as it seems!

Zhiguli contributed to the development of a network of filling stations and service stations. But the growth of the park still overtook the capabilities of the latter. The cars were aging, but did not go to car cemeteries at all, as originally planned. Official term service "Zhiguli" was seven years. But they were repaired, changing everything - from suspension arms and engines to wings and spars.

The planned economy absolutely did not foresee such a demand for spare parts. And then the quality of components began to fall. Even the owners, far from technology, anxiously repeated obscure terms: silent blocks, distributor, liners, caps, camshaft. The latter became a favorite topic at the turn of the 1980s, when, as a result of the rationalization of production, the part began to fail even on almost new cars.

Spare parts were becoming increasingly scarce, and meeting at a car service was the dream of hundreds of thousands of Soviet motorists, at least those who could not change, regulate, let alone cook and paint on their own.

Then, already in perestroika times, the shortage of spare parts began to be compensated by cooperatives growing faster than mushrooms. But those details are still remembered by many with a shudder. A new revolution was beginning, in which the Zhiguli no longer had the main role ...

SPORT AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION

In the early 1970s, Zhiguli entered the rally and circuit race tracks. For the VAZ-2101 with a working volume of 1.2 liters, a separate class was created in the country, since the main sport car those years "Moskvich-412" had a 1.5-liter engine.

Athletes on the "Zhiguli" carried more and more serious results. And in 1975, S. Brundza and L. Shuvalov, the crew of the VAZ-2103, became the absolute champions of the USSR. Since that time, the VAZ "classic" has dominated domestic routes.

The first international success came to the “penny” already in 1971, when the Togliatti team won the silver cup at the Tour of Europe rally. The factory riders performed well in the individual competition as well. The most striking achievements of the 1970s - early 1980s are associated with the stages of the Friendship Cup of the socialist countries (an alternative to the capitalist championships). Zhiguli riders have repeatedly won cup rallies and ring races.

In the mid-1970s, VAZs performed well in the prestigious rallies included in the European Championship. Anatoly and Galina Kozyrchikovs became 15th in the overall standings of the 1000 Lakes rally in 1975. A year later, S. Brundza and A. Girdauskas took the sixth place overall and the second in their class at the Akropolis rally. This was the highest achievement of "Lada" in competitions of this level.

Not only our athletes, but also representatives of the socialist countries, and even the “children of capitalism”, mostly Scandinavians, performed on the Zhiguli.

Racing versions of the Zhiguli were built both by the VAZ itself and by various sports clubs. Of the foreign closers, the Czechoslovak workshop "Metallex" became most famous.

The pinnacle of sports refinement of the "classics" was the "Lada-VFTS", created on the basis of the VAZ-2105 in Vilnius under the leadership of the repeated champion of the USSR Stasis Brundza. Her motor developed 160 hp. at 7000 rpm and 165 N m at 5500 rpm. The machines were equipped with a 4- or 5-speed cam gearbox.

"Classic" went to competitions back in the 1990s, but it still appears in amateur rallies now.

"ZHIGULI" and "Driving"

Undoubtedly, the VAZ brand has broken all records for the number of mentions in the ZR in the entire history of the magazine. Already in 1968, the cover of the June issue was decorated with a photo of three pre-production cars. And in the fall, the editors announced a competition for the name of a new car. 54 849 letters arrived! What only names were not in them! "Novorozhets" and "Katyusha", "Argamak", "Directive" and VIL-100 (if anyone forgot, in 1970 the country widely celebrated the centenary of V.I. Lenin). The top five included: "Volzhanka" (3989 letters), "Friendship" (2878), "Dream" (2806), "Zhiguli" (2220) and "Lada" (1752).

With the advent of the Zhiguli, they were given special attention in the magazine. Readers were looking forward to the next report on the life of the editorial "penny" with the number "00-55 Proba". And in the permanent column “We drive a Zhiguli”, they described in detail the design and maintenance methods, gave advice on operating and driving a car that was unprecedentedly dynamic for our motorists.

Each new model, modification and even a modernized unit were described in detail, with diagrams, drawings and photographs, by the magazine. Several Zhiguli models after that first “penny” worked in “Behind the Wheel”, winding up tens of thousands of kilometers in Moscow and the region, on long runs. For example, in 1977, the "sixes" along with the "fields" participated in a journey that repeated the route of the famous Karakum run of 1933.

At the end of the 20th century, the magazine announced the competition "Russian Car of the Century". More than 80,000 (!) readers expressed their opinion. The majority recognized as such the first-born VAZ - model 2101, "penny". And absolutely fair!

However, the history of the Zhiguli and their life on the pages of ZR did not end there. And it will not end until interest in the most massive domestic automobile family dries up. And this will not come soon: according to the traffic police, as of January 2011, 6,800,000 cars of the VAZ “classic” family are registered in Russia. And this... wait a minute... 20.8% of the entire Russian fleet.

PEOPLE

In the past, a test engineer, deputy head of the testing department, head of the car debugging department, then head of the road test and car debugging department. Now he is a pensioner, but he works - he creates new methods.

“In 1967, I worked as a test engineer at GAZ. Around the same time, I learned about the FIAT-124 and decided to switch to the VAZ under construction in order to work with this particular machine. The transfer was not easy, since some specialists from GAZ had already left, and they did not want to send people there anymore.

I became a test engineer at VAZ in 1968, when the plant did not have a single building, even the Avtozavodsky district did not yet exist - an open field with several foundations. My first independent work in the winter of 1968-1969 was organizing and conducting comparative tests of the FIAT-124 and VAZ-2101 prototypes, still with minor differences from the "Italians".

We were based in the garage of the city executive committee, and our “test base” was in the nearby village of Timofeevka. We drove a dozen cars around the clock, in three shifts, according to the Italian Stop and go method, imitating the life of a doctor: a short trip on a cold engine and almost an hour of parking. For the weekend, the “doctor left” for 300-350 km, moving at a high speed for those times. The roads are icy, and the tires are summer, they didn’t even dream of spikes then.

It was then that I was struck by the amazing handling and stability of the car at that time. I had experience driving Muscovites of various models, Pobeda, the 21st Volga and prototypes of the twenty-four. I liked the dynamics and effective brakes, despite the lack of an amplifier. Conquered a powerful heater and good blowing glass. At a time when the “Muscovites” were driven with defrosted slits on the windshield, wrapped in warm clothes, we flaunted driving in jackets, and even shirts.

VAZ has had three key car, who gave life to entire families: the VAZ-2101, the Niva, created on the nodes and assemblies of the same "classics", and the front-wheel drive "eight".

I have a special relationship with the "classics". I consider it a unique offer for that time in terms of price / quality ratio. It was not easy to buy a Zhiguli even with money. Even today, with a huge variety of choices, the "classic" is in demand. Well, in my personal life, this is a landmark car that determined my fate.

In the early 1970s, he was the head of the technical department of the mechanical assembly production. He left the factory "by age" (the expression "pension" does not accept) in 1998. Now a private entrepreneur, he supplies electrical components to the main conveyor of AVTOVAZ.

“In the summer of 1967 I came to Tolyatti from GAZ. Dusty cornfield, larks sing in the sky. On three poplars growing very close, there is a plan of the plant, which does not yet exist. We, young bosses (we recruited guys no older than thirty as middle managers, there was a limit for directors - up to forty) of an enterprise that does not yet exist, are listening to Polyakov. Everything is beautifully presented. And suddenly: the first car should come off the assembly line for the 100th anniversary of the birth of Lenin! There are less than three years left, and there is still not a single building here ...

FIAT-124 I first saw in US. Give or take a tin can. Flimsy hurts for our roads. A little later, changes in the engine, gearbox, suspension, brakes and other units went through our department.

In the engine, the most significant change - the transfer of the camshaft to the top - was made according to the idea of the chief designer Solovyov. How many copies were broken because of this! But I remember the real battle between FIAT and US over the cartridge cases, in which we, the VAZ workers, also took part. The Italians insisted that the cylinder block should be cast iron, non-sleeved - "according to the project." Ours demanded to introduce sleeves into it, assuming that the domestic “wrong” cast iron would wear out intensively or wear out pistons and rings. Both sides fought to the death. There was a threat of delay. Polyakov found a way out: he did not take sides and decided to follow two paths in parallel. We even purchased and installed equipment for the production of shells. But this site remained unclaimed, since metallurgists were able to find the “correct” cast iron for the block and the motor did not need liners.

Hearing the word "classic", most motorists in our country remember not the works of Chekhov and Tolstoy and not symphonic music, but the Volzhsky family of cars Automobile Factory, originating from the legendary "penny" VAZ-2101, released for the first time in 1970. Rear-wheel drive small cars were produced until 2012, and, despite their archaic design, are dearly loved by many motorists in the vastness of Russia and the countries of the former socialist camp. The characteristics of the Zhiguli, regardless of the model, are very modest, and the design is angular and not too refined, but the simplicity of the design provides extensive tuning opportunities. Consider the most common solutions to improve the style and driving characteristics of the "classics".

What is tuning

Tuning a car is the process of modifying it to improve its performance or design. It is conditionally possible to distinguish two areas of improvements:

  • technical tuning,
  • styling.

Technical tuning is aimed at improving the driving characteristics of the car, such as power, aerodynamics, handling, dynamic performance, economy and safety. To improve these parameters, work is underway on the engine, suspension, gearbox, exhaust and brake systems and other components that affect the performance of the car.

Styling is carried out in order to change the appearance of the car and its interior, to make the car unique. Improvements in this area of tuning usually concern body panels, rims, lighting equipment and interior parts.

Both of these approaches are applied to VAZ models of the classic line, often combining them. Therefore, on the roads of our country, you can find both fives, sevens and other models of the family that have been changed beyond recognition, as well as heavy-duty fireballs that are outwardly indistinguishable from their angular counterparts.

The “penny”, modified with a sports body kit with large foglights, airbrushing and new rims, looks almost like a racing car

Styling "classics" VAZ: external and internal modifications

Many owners of "classic" VAZ models want to make the car unique, and the interior more comfortable and bright, while some simply consider the appearance of their cars unfinished. Both of them resort to visual tuning, sometimes without affecting technical part. Consider the most popular ways to improve appearance and salon "Zhiguli".

Tuning front optics "Lada"

The front lighting of a car is often associated with the eyes of the car. are often a defining element of design, so it is not surprising that most often motorists first of all take up tuning optics. Depending on the model, tuning tasks and the amount of money that the owner is willing to spend on finalizing his car, three types of headlight improvements can be conditionally distinguished. Consider them in order from the most budgetary to the most complex and costly.

Changing the shape of the head lighting equipment by installing overlays

This method of headlight tuning is most often used by owners of VAZ-2104, 2105 and 2107 cars. Their rectangular lighting technology with a flat ceiling surface makes it easy to install overlays of almost any shape. Front light tuning kits are available at most auto parts stores. domestic cars. Often, motorists make nozzles on their own, because this requires only dense plastic, a sharp saw and sandpaper or a file.

Nozzles are attached, as a rule, with glue directly to the headlight cover. When using screws, the nozzle must be installed on the car body to prevent water from entering the headlight, so this method is used less frequently.

It is worth considering carefully the choice of glue. It must be heat-resistant, as the headlights can heat up to high temperatures during long-term operation.

Installation of angel eyes on the Zhiguli

The so-called angel eyes are a more complex kind of “classic” head light tuning. Most often, such a refinement is carried out on the VAZ-2106 and 2103 models, since on these cars the LED strip can also be fixed outside the headlights. However, this modification is quite common on other products of the "classic" line. To install angel eyes on the "four", "five" or "seven", you need to drill a reflector inside the ceiling and install diodes in each hole. In addition, a box for a block of diodes and resistors is placed on the back side.

Similarly, you can improve the rear optics. LEDs will increase the brightness of brake lights, change the pattern of the rear lights and reduce the load on the car's on-board electrical network.

All holes drilled in the reflectors for installing diodes must be treated with sealant to prevent water from entering the headlight.

Xenon headlights for the "classic" VAZ

The most radical and expensive modification of the Zhiguli head light is the installation of xenon headlights. Xenon light is much brighter than halogen, and the illumination spot from such headlights is much wider. The installation process itself is easy. It is enough to remove the headlights, drill holes in the reflectors and install new lamps. However, starting equipment and the lamps themselves can be quite expensive.

Tuning windows "Lada"

To create a cozy atmosphere in the cabin, as well as to protect from bright sunlight, the owners of the Zhiguli often resort to applying tinting to the windows, as well as installing a grille on the rear-view glass.

Toning: style, comfort and law

Car window tinting is probably the most common type of tuning. As a rule, windows are tinted with a film. There is also electric tinting, but its cost is measured in thousands of dollars, so it is not used on the Zhiguli. There are several types of tint film:

A car enthusiast who is about to tint their car windows should be aware of the legal regulations regarding the level of blackout. The main points of GOST 27902 (glass light transmission):

  1. The windshield should not lose more than 25% of light transmission.
  2. For the front windows of car doors, losses can be up to 30%.
  3. Rear center glass and side windows on the rear doors can be darkened by 95%.
  4. Printing and perforated film are not allowed on the front windows.
  5. The use of red, green, yellow and blue tint film on the front windows is prohibited.

Rear window grille: a classic for a “classic”

The grill on the rear window is a decorative element made in the spirit of powerful american cars seventies. In addition to a purely aesthetic purpose, it protects the rear of the cabin from direct sunlight, and the rear window from dirt.

As a rule, the grille is sold in the form of two separate parts and is fastened with a special protrusion located around the entire perimeter of the part. This protrusion must be placed under the rubber seal rear window. Contact surfaces should preferably be cleaned and degreased.

Aerodynamic body kits and spoilers for Zhiguli

If you want to radically change the look of your "classic", you can not do without an aerodynamic body kit. However, it should be understood that the word "aerodynamic" in relation to most tuning packages for the "Lada" is used in a figurative sense. Parts that really improve streamlining or increase traction are rare and usually cost quite a lot of money.

Typically, an aerodynamic body kit includes:

  • modified front bumper with imitation air intakes and spoilers;
  • door sills;
  • rear bumper (sometimes with a decorative diffuser).

Sometimes the aerokit also includes a rear wing, which is most often attached to the trunk lid.

Refinement of the interior of the "classic"

Refinement of the Zhiguli interior looks like the most appropriate styling direction, because it is the interior of the car that is most often in front of the driver and passengers. In addition, in addition to aesthetic changes, you can significantly increase the level of comfort, which is not high in the basic configurations of the “classic” line models.

Sound insulation of the cabin

Speaking of comfort, first of all, you should pay attention to sound insulation. In the factory configuration of the Zhiguli, it is practically absent.

To paste the interior with soundproofing material, you will have to remove all the seats, the dashboard, as well as the door trim. As noise insulation, you can use penofol or a special coating that is sold in parts stores.

Front panel: replacement, refinement and sheathing

The front panel on VAZ cars of the "classic" family can be upgraded or replaced entirely. Some owners prefer to install torpedoes from other VAZ models on their cars, but there are also those who decide to install parts from cars of other brands. In the vastness of the network you can find photos of "Zhiguli" with torpedoes from Mitsubishi Galant and Lancer, Nissan Almera and even Maxima. The BMW brand is especially popular in our country, so craftsmen install front panels from most of the old models of the Bavarian automaker on the “classics”. Naturally, donor torpedoes need to be seriously modified and customized so that they fit into the Zhiguli cabin.

The native front panel can be sheathed in leather or other material. This is a rather complicated process. In order for the new skin to look good, it is necessary to perfectly fit the material so that it does not sag or form wrinkles. The torpedo itself must be completely dismantled for plating.

New devices are often installed on a standard front panel. Ready-made instrument clusters for various Zhiguli models are sold in automotive stores, but the most creative car owners make scales, arrows and lights with their own hands.

Seats: upholstery or covers

Companies engaged in the manufacture of covers for car seats, lots of. Their range includes models for almost any brand. Moreover, many of these companies produce cases according to individual wishes of the customer. Thus, choosing an option for the "classics" is not difficult. However, the covers in most cases are a temporary solution, they stretch and begin to “walk” on the seats.

If you are skilled in cutting and sewing, you can upholster the seats yourself with the material that suits you. It is important that the fabric, leather or vinyl is durable and resistant to warping.

door card trim

After replacing the upholstery of the seats and the front panel, it makes sense to pay attention to the door cards. As a rule, in the basic configuration, they are upholstered in cheap black leatherette and low-quality plastic. To improve this part of the cabin, the inner door trim will have to be removed, having previously dismantled the armrest, the inner door opening handle and the power window lever.

Installation of power windows

In the process of tuning the door trim, you can also install power windows. Installation kits are available from auto parts stores.

Ceiling tug

The ceilings on the Zhiguli suffer almost more than other interior elements. The material with which the ceiling is upholstered often sags, tears or gets dirty. There are two ways to stretch the ceiling:

  1. Direct upholstery replacement. This procedure requires the removal of the arcs over which the material is stretched. During this operation, you can glue the ceiling with additional sound insulation.
  2. Stretching a new layer of upholstery over the old. This method is suitable if the old ceiling has not yet sagged.

Replacing the steering wheel and gearshift lever

If the tuning of the "classic" is made in a sporty style, it makes sense to install a three- or two-spoke sports steering wheel of a smaller diameter. To do this, you need to remove the old steering wheel, the mounts of which are located under the signal cushion. The screws that hold the cushion itself, depending on the model, are either under the emblem or on the back of the steering wheel.

It also makes sense to choose a nozzle for the gearshift lever in accordance with the color scheme and style of interior trim. Some owners shorten the lever itself to reduce its travel, but this can lead to a decrease in shifting efficiency.

Landing understatement

Recently, young motorists, who are most often engaged in tuning the "classics", have been popular with lowering the car's suspension. This is done solely for aesthetic reasons and often leads to a decrease in the driving properties of the car. This direction of improvement is not recommended for residents of those parts of our country where the quality of the road surface leaves much to be desired.

Understating the "classics" is quite simple. It is necessary to disassemble the components of the front and rear suspension and cut the springs to the required length.

Technical tuning "Zhiguli": we increase the performance

The simplicity of the Zhiguli design makes the cars of this family an ideal constructor from which you can assemble a fast and maneuverable car. And the rear-wheel drive layout allows you to build a real car for drifting competitions or amateur circuit racing. However, for a serious improvement in the handling, dynamics and safety of the Zhiguli, deep improvements are required. Let's see how you can start this process.

How to improve the handling and stability of the "classic"

Despite the classic layout (engine in front, drive on rear wheels), "Zhiguli" are distinguished by mediocre handling. And the road cars of this family do not hold very well. Correcting this situation is quite real. To do this, you need to pay attention to tuning the suspension and brakes.

Refinement of the Zhiguli suspension

The standard tuning scheme for the “classic” suspension allows you to increase its rigidity and significantly reduce rolls. It consists of three stages:

  1. Installation of springs from the "Niva" (VAZ 2121). The springs are more rigid, but at the same time they are ideal for installation on the Zhiguli. At this stage, you also need to replace the rubber bumpers.
  2. Replacing shock absorbers with sports ones. Preference should be given to gas oil racks. The range of these units in parts stores is very wide.
  3. Installing stiffer anti-roll bars.

Improvement of the suspension will not only improve handling and stability, but also increase comfort when driving a Zhiguli.

Tuning the brake system

Refinement of the brakes on the Zhiguli is worth doing before you take on the increase in power and dynamic performance. The standard brakes of the “classic” have never been efficient or reliable, so they may simply not be able to cope with the increased speeds.

As a rule, all Zhiguli were equipped with front disc and rear drum brakes. It is better to start the improvement process by replacing the rear brakes. Brake tuning kits from well-known manufacturers can be purchased at parts stores, but their price can be quite high. A budget option is to install ventilated disc brakes from the VAZ-2112. They are much more effective at stopping the car.

Tuning the rear brakes comes down to replacing drum mechanisms with disc brakes. A VAZ-2108 can become a donor. front brake calipers from the "eight" or "nine" is easy to adapt and install on the "classic" as the rear, but the disks will have to be bought separately.

How to increase the power and dynamic characteristics of the "classics"

The Achilles' heel of "classics" is its dynamics. Even the most budgetary foreign cars pick up speed much faster than the Zhiguli. Many owners of "classic" VAZs are not ready to put up with this. They resort to tuning the engines of their cars, and also modify the exhaust system.

Tuning engine "Zhiguli"

Chip tuning is available to owners of injector Zhiguli. This procedure does not require intervention in the engine design. The change in the characteristics of the motor occurs due to the adjustment of the engine software. With the help of chip tuning, it is possible to change the level of saturation of the burning mixture with gasoline, which, in turn, leads to a change in power and efficiency parameters.

If your Zhiguli have carbureted engine, chip tuning, unfortunately, is not available to you. However, power can be increased by installing two carburetors or by increasing the diameter of the fuel and air jets of the carburetor. The effect of this upgrade is to speed up the feed air-fuel mixture into the combustion chamber.

If these improvements are not enough, you can use the following methods to increase the power of the "classic" engine:

  1. Installation air filter zero resistance will increase power by improving the saturation process combustible mixture air. Engine performance is improved without sacrificing efficiency.
  2. Installation of the compressor and turbine.
  3. Increasing the working volume by boring the cylinder block.

Exhaust system tuning

Competent revision exhaust system"Zhiguli" can bring an increase in power up to 10 Horse power. Noise absorption, environmental friendliness and efficiency of the machine are sacrificed for performance improvement.

It is possible to reduce the resistance of the exhaust system and thereby increase the power by installing a direct-flow exhaust. The difference between conventional exhaust and cocurrent exhaust is the linear arrangement of the muffler chambers.

It should be understood that a do-it-yourself forward flow may not bring an increase in power. In this case, the whole point of the changes will be only to increase the volume of the exhaust. For greater confidence in the tuning results, it is best to purchase a straight-through muffler designed by specialists for your car model.

This rule also applies to the replacement of the "pants" of the muffler. An incorrectly selected part can disrupt the operation of the cylinders. However, a high-quality low-resistance manifold increases engine power due to more efficient removal of exhaust gases.

Increasing the security of the "classics"

If you have seriously upgraded your “classic”, made it noticeably faster and more maneuverable, you should think about increasing the level of safety. This direction of tuning becomes especially important if the car will be used in one or another kind of competition.

Four-point seat belts for driver and front passenger

Standard seat belts have a three-point fastening system. They cope with fixing the driver and passenger in the event of a frontal and side impact, but they do not hold the body securely enough. Four-point harnesses can save people even in an overturning vehicle. They are in contact with the body in the manner of the shoulders of a backpack and are securely held in the chair.

The lower anchorages of the four-point belts are mounted on the lower part of the seat backs, and the upper ones are mounted on special eyelets that must be mounted in the floor behind the driver and front passenger or in the roll cage. This usually leaves little legroom for the rear passengers, so four-point harnesses are mostly reserved for sporty modifications where rear seats missing.

Safety cage for "Zhiguli"

The roll cage serves to protect the driver and passenger from injury in the most serious accidents. Carcasses are predominantly used in racing cars, moreover, in most racing series, the presence of a safety cage is a prerequisite for the car to be allowed on the track. In addition to the protective function, the frame can also increase the rigidity of the supporting structure, which has a positive effect on the vehicle's handling.

There are two types of safety cages available for installation on the Zhiguli:

  1. Welded. Mounted in the body by welding. Such a structure cannot be dismantled.
  2. Boltova. Mounted on bolts, fastened, as a rule, to the bottom and ceiling of the car. The reliability and fastening strength of such a frame is somewhat lower than that of a welded frame, but for the “classics” its characteristics are usually sufficient.

Tuning VAZ cars of the “classic” line can turn an outdated budget car into a real racing monster or into a stylish compact vehicle with a very high level of comfort. It is important to know the measure in visual tuning and to correctly approach technical tuning. Refine your Zhiguli with taste and intelligence, then the result will pleasantly surprise you and your neighbors on the road.

The history of this model has almost 30 years. The release began in 1982, when the then-popular Togliatti "five" was modernized. Modernization almost did not touch specifications, but an increase in comfort and some touches on the appearance of the car gave rise to after " people's car» VAZ 2106 is ironic to call the "seven" "Russian Mercedes". Of course, the VAZ 2107 is far from being a Mercedes and not quite a Russian car. The roots stretch from the homeland of Palmiro Togliatti, who gave the name to the whole Russian city, from the “great-grandfather” Fiat 124, who will soon turn half a century, through the grandmother “penny” (VAZ 2101) and “mother” - (VAZ 2106). What is the “seven” - a misunderstanding of the domestic auto industry or is it still a worthy vehicle?

VAZ 2107, also known as LADA 2107, is the limit that the Russian automotive industry was able to achieve in the development of a small car with a leading rear axle. Popular in the 70s, the angular body shape of the "sedan" type, a spectacular radiator grille. Four doors, a decent trunk volume of 379 liters. Five places. Significantly improved front seats and more pleasing to the eye dashboard favorably distinguish the interior of the "seven" from its predecessors. True, three adult passengers in the back feel very uncomfortable, especially the middle one, who simply has nowhere to put his legs. Dealers offer two complete sets - "norm" and "lux", which differ mainly in interior trim. Both in the standard and in the luxury configuration, climate control in the car is carried out only by the interior heater and power windows. These are external impressions of the car. Let's take a look at what's inside.

Placed under the hood different engines, depending on the year of issue and destination. The beginning was laid by 4-cylinder VAZ engines with a volume of 1.3, 1.5 and 1.6 liters with a carburetor. They developed 64, 68 and 72 hp. For export to Europe (and this happened!) They put a larger engine - 1.7 liters with central fuel injection. Its power is already 84 hp. In China, on the contrary, the VAZ-21033-10 engine with a volume of 1.45 liters and a power of 68 hp was installed. "sharpened" for the 76th gasoline. For special tasks of law enforcement agencies, the car was equipped rotary piston engine Wankel system, which is characterized by a small volume, but high reliability, with a capacity of 135 hp. and corresponding price. Yes, and it consumes almost 2 liters of gasoline more. But the speed develops up to 180 km / h, which is not only not necessary for an ordinary car owner, but also dangerous, given the lack of security systems, with the exception of belts.

In recent years, only injector "sevens" with an engine capacity of 1568 cm? five-speed gearbox gears, it provides acceleration to 100 km / h in 15 seconds and top speed 150 km/h Brake system familiar: rear - drums, front discs. Naturally, there are no anti-lock braking systems, as well as a stabilizer exchange rate stability. Everything, by today's standards, is simple to asceticism. However, the “crazy hands” of Russian motorists and professionals of “branded” “garage” tuning sometimes squeeze much more out of a venerable car than the designers and manufacturers put into it. Experiments with gear ratios, electronics tuning and other “shamanic dances” lead to the fact that a modest “sema” famously tears from traffic lights in front of foreign cars, and accelerates up to 200 km / h on empty night streets, shocking passers-by.

To make a portrait of the buyer of the VAZ "classics" is unrealistic. These people are too different. "Seven" quite often buys young people as the first car. Usually, that part of it, for which "show-offs" are not more expensive than money. Though not prestigious, but new car on affordable price. The price, by the way, starts from 200 thousand rubles. By adding another 50, you can probably exhaust everything possible options. It turns out quite a decent car for a novice driver, a young family or an ambitious guy who starts an active labor activity on the principle of “feet feed the wolf”.

"Seven" really "feeds" a lot of owners. Taxi drivers are willing to use it due to its low price, and what is very important, repairs and spare parts are inexpensive for it. On the once prestigious “Russian Mercedes”, small wholesale traders deliver goods to “points”. The villagers bring vegetables and fruits to the market, fortunately, in addition to 300 kg in the trunk and cabin, the car can pull a trailer, in which there is another half a ton of cargo. All in all, this is a hard worker.

However, some young people (especially southern guys) still want individuality. When some more free funds appear, “tuning” usually begins. It happens that auto glass is tinted “in roofing material”, body kits that are unthinkable for factory designers appear on the body, the factory muffler is replaced with a straight-through one. A dazzling “collective farm xenon” is placed in optics that are completely unsuitable for this, causing the just indignation of most drivers. It remains to install acoustics with a subwoofer, which causes alarms to be triggered by cars within a radius of 20 meters, and finally, we get a car of a "chot kid".

Another category of owners of the "sevens" - conservatives. Those who believe that they are not looking for good from good. Previously, they say, they normally drove “penny”, and what this front-wheel drive gave up! For years, the accumulated habit of driving rear-wheel drive cars makes it difficult for some to understand how it is possible to add gas in a skid. Usually these are drivers over 50 years old, respectable fathers of the family. They prefer to maintain and repair their cars themselves. It is better for young people to buy used "sevens" from such owners than new ones in the cabin, since the build quality of the "sevens" sometimes leaves much to be desired. But still, the main drawback of the "seven" is poor compliance with modern safety requirements.

It turns out that, despite all the disadvantages, the VAZ 2107 still has its own buyer. Therefore, the release of the “classics” has been “planned” to stop for several years. So far to no avail.
