Driving in reverse on one-way traffic. Is it legal to drive in reverse on one-way roads? Where is it forbidden to drive in reverse according to traffic rules

Every driver should know and remember how you can and how not to move on the roads. in reverse. This is necessary in order to avoid absolutely stupid and ridiculous collisions, which, according to statistics, are not so rare.

What are the signs that prevent reversing?

In fact, there is no specific sign in the rules that would prohibit reversing. The driver must remember only one thing, that there are several prescription signs that make this maneuver inaccessible to all road users.

So you can't go back if vehicle moves on the highway (sign 5.1) or on the road for cars (sign 5.3). The ban only removes a serious accident that occurred on the road and prevents the driver from moving normally. However, inspectors warn that such a movement is always very risky, and when maneuvering, the driver must be as careful and accurate as possible.

Reversing at intersections

Reversing at intersections is strictly prohibited and every driver should remember this. When making such a maneuver, the inspector of the guard service will definitely stop the violator and may issue him a fine.

In addition, such a maneuver is strictly prohibited in the area near the intersection, or rather, 15 meters before and after it.

The inspectors are especially strict towards those violators who imperceptibly wanted to turn around at a pedestrian crossing or next to it, while choosing the wrong trajectory of movement and creating a traffic jam. In such situations, the fine for a U-turn will be issued twice as much.

Drivers who are driving a car with a trailer must act especially carefully. The fact is that the trailer creates an increased danger.

Other prohibitions

In addition to the fact that reversing is prohibited at intersections, this maneuver is also not allowed in tunnels, at railway crossings and bridges. An inexperienced driver will be able to independently familiarize himself with the list of prohibitions in the Rules, or rather, by reading clauses 8.11, 8.12, 16.1.

But how should the driver behave in the situation when he has already stopped in the wrong place, but he simply needs to return?

In this case, traffic rules do not spare the mistaken one. In order for the driver to continue moving in the right direction, he will simply need to look for the right place to turn around. There is no excuse to lift the ban on reversing in tunnels, etc. That is why cadets in driving schools are always strongly advised to carefully consider their path before leaving so as not to get into a difficult situation in the future, or even worse, get into an accident.

Reverse parking

It is worth noting that most often reverse gear is used by drivers when parking. By the way, according to inspectors, the most ridiculous accidents most often occur in parking spaces.

Luckily, all car parks allow reversing. However, some drivers, having learned that they can now move around as they please, have ceased to follow the elementary rules. traffic and ethics.

To safely reverse in parking spaces, the driver needs to follow only a few simple rules:

  1. Inspectors recommend that you leave the parking space only at the front of the car, and not at the stern. Thus, the motorist is able to best control everything that happens around.
  2. Give way to those cars that have already left their place or those that have just entered the parking lot.
  3. Give way to vehicles that are on the right ("obstruction on the right").

How to act on a one-way road?

Reversing on the road with one way traffic not prohibited by the rules. Anyone who thinks otherwise is deeply mistaken, because the traffic rules clearly state that backward movement is prohibited only on two-way sections.

Recently, however, inspectors began to fine "violators" for such maneuvers. Referring to the already issued law and the creation of a dangerous situation, they write out an administrative fine in the amount of 5 thousand rubles or even send the case to court.

Some drivers are perplexed when they hear such a sum, but there is always a way out. You just need to act carefully in all situations and not attract the attention of law enforcement officers.

In addition, paragraph 8.12 states that on one-way roads, the driver has the right to reverse up to the first intersection or to the nearest pedestrian crossing.

Some tricks

The rules really describe a lot of situations and places when reversing is prohibited. However, some experienced drivers admit that they have long found a loophole in the Russian law. For example, if the driver needs to turn around, then a short backward movement is not considered a full-fledged maneuver, and therefore is not subject to a fine.

But you should always remember about those places where a U-turn is also strictly prohibited. So, you can’t turn around at pedestrian crossings, near bus stops and other regular transport, in areas with poor visibility, as well as on bridges and under them.

Also, drivers with great experience strongly recommend that beginners during a turn (short-term backward movement) turn on Emergency Signal. This is necessary in order to attract the attention of other road users and minimize the possibility of a collision.

There are also other situations that are not described in the SDA. Driving in reverse as a U-turn is allowed for the driver who is in the vehicle with a trailer, however, in this case, the maneuver must also be controlled by another person in order to prevent a collision.

Compliance with traffic rules when reversing

Absolutely all participants in the movement must follow the rules. This is, first of all, personal safety and the safety of other drivers and pedestrians.

The driver must remember that when reversing, he must give way to all vehicles that interfere with him, as well as pedestrians. Such a mandatory condition is valid not only on the roads, but also in parking areas.

In any case, reversing is an unsafe maneuver. If the driver is not completely sure of his actions, then he simply needs to enlist the help of another person who will control traffic safety.

Statutory fines

It must be remembered that only traffic police inspectors are responsible for imposing fines for reversing on the road, so you should not attract their attention, let alone get involved in a dispute.

So, if the guardian decided that such a maneuver was dangerous for other road users, then he has the right to issue a fine to the driver (12.15 of the Code of Administrative Offenses).

Violating traffic rules in the yard or in the parking lot, the driver must also remember that a fine will be imposed on this maneuver. It does not matter where the vehicle is located, the main thing is that it poses a danger to other road users.

If the driver is caught for the second time violating Article 12.15 of the Code of Administrative Offenses, then in this case the inspector will already give the materials for sentencing to court, and the driver will be deprived of his rights. The minimum term of deprivation is 4 months, and the maximum is 1 year. If the driver is "caught" by stationary cameras, then he will automatically be sent a fine in the mail in the amount of 5 thousand rubles.

Why do we need to know where reversing is prohibited? In fact, the most unpredictable accidents are associated with this, because, moving backward, we see the road in the mirrors. So it is better to prevent this danger than we will now deal with.

Why should traffic laws be observed?

On the road, motorists perform many maneuvers: overtaking, turning around, turning and others. One such maneuver is reversing. This action is rare on the road. Every car owner knows how to perform this maneuver, but not everyone remembers when this cannot be done, because such an action is often simply not safe. Because of this, restrictions on reversing were introduced at the legislative level.

A driver who makes such a maneuver on the road must pass absolutely all: Cars passing by, vehicles turning around, or vehicles making any other maneuver. Reversing is permitted only if this maneuver cannot interfere with other vehicles. This is also stated in section 8, paragraph 8.12 in the rules.

In addition, if the driver has a rather dangerous situation of leaving the carriageway by reversing (for example, leaving the yard), then, in order to avoid, he must use the help of an outsider. This may be a passenger or a passerby. Otherwise, the driver again violates the rule of paragraph 8.12.

This rule can also be used on the road, but only if there is no threat to life for the human assistant. If this maneuver is difficult to perform, then it is better to refuse it.

Places where driving in reverse is prohibited

In addition, the driver must be aware that there are no markings or other lanes for reversing. But there are places that are absolutely precisely spelled out in the traffic rules that prohibit this maneuver. These include intersections, tunnels, railroad crossings, bridges and other. The entire list of these places is provided in paragraphs 8.11, 8.12 and 16.1 of the relevant regulatory document.

This list was not created by chance. For example, the situation on the road: the driver was moving forward to the bridge, and suddenly he realizes that he did not go there - he had to go under the bridge, and he drove into it. In this case, with the help of reverse gear, he will not be able to go back, and he will also not be able to turn around. Both of these maneuvers will interfere with other drivers, and an emergency will be created accordingly. By the way, in any driving school you will be told that the road needs to be thought out in advance for this very reason.

Tricks to get around in a one-way street

Some drivers believe that it is generally forbidden to take back, but they are deeply mistaken. For example, if a driver enters a road with a one-way traffic sign and needs to make a maneuver - to reverse, then he may well do it. After all, the rules have restrictions only that two-way traffic is prohibited on such a road, and it is forbidden to make a U-turn on this section, and nothing is said in the law that it is impossible to move backwards.

But recently, traffic police inspectors began to fine drivers who made such maneuvers on such a section of the road. They explained their actions by the fact that there is a law that prohibits oncoming traffic in a one-way section. The fine for such an offense is not small: 5,000 rubles or even deprivation of rights.

There is such a situation in the parking lot, what is ahead standing car blocks the exit of the driver, so he is forced to back out. It is for such situations that paragraph 8.12 applies, which does not say that such a maneuver is prohibited. Thus, in order not to violate the accepted norms, it is necessary to follow all changes in the legislation, as well as to know the rules that are in the traffic rules. But even there, the rules are constantly changing, so even experienced drivers should periodically re-read these approved laws.

Every driver knows in which places reversing is prohibited, and in which it is allowed. Before starting this maneuver, you need to make sure that pedestrians or other vehicles that are out of sight do not suffer as a result of this - this is the first rule.

Important! Reversing is a complex maneuver that requires tension, concentration and attentiveness from the driver. Limited visibility makes it difficult to move.

Features and rules of movement

The rules of the road allow pedestrians to be informed of their intention to make a maneuver with an audible signal. Additionally, you can use such a notification method as an "emergency gang". The traffic rules do not regulate such actions. Modern machines equipped with special systems that give an intermittent sound when making a maneuver.

Where is it forbidden to drive in reverse?

There are direct prohibitions on this maneuver, established in the SDA. Here is a list of especially dangerous components of the roadway, on which accidents often occur, it is forbidden to take back:

  • stop;
  • motorway;
  • crossroads;
  • crosswalk;
  • tunnel;
  • Railway;
  • overpasses, bridges, flyovers;
  • areas with limited visibility less than 100 m.

Important! Paragraph 8.11 of the SDA regulates the impossibility of reversing wherever a U-turn is prohibited.

Some nuances should be taken into account:

  • reversing at the intersection is prohibited, but short-term maneuvering is not prohibited;
  • the maneuver is also used for one-way traffic, before the appearance of a railway crossing, highway, bridge, tunnel;
  • in case of illegal actions of the driver, the traffic police inspector may impose a fine for reversing.

Important! The maneuver is allowed if it is safe and does not interfere with traffic participants (clause 8.12 of the SDA).

Where is reverse driving allowed?

An exception to the general prohibition is a one-way road. However, the driver needs to check whether he will create discomfort for other drivers. He must make sure that drivers of other cars do not have to:

  • change the direction of movement;
  • reduce speed.

Important! Maneuvering obliges the driver to give way to pedestrians and other vehicles, to move at a minimum speed, and to be ready for emergency braking.

Accident while reversing

In the event of an accident, there is a high probability that the driver who was moving towards the flow of traffic will be found guilty. What is the fine for reversing? If a maneuver, contrary to the ban, is performed on a motorway, the violator will face a fine of 2,500 rubles (part 3 of article 12.11 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation).

You can avoid accidents while maneuvering if you follow the recommendations:

  • use a sound signal;
  • when a car moving in reverse appears, wait for it to stop;
  • ensure continuous monitoring of the progress of the maneuver using rear-view mirrors;
  • track the position of other vehicles on both sides;
  • unhurried execution of the maneuver at minimum speed.

Important! Limited visibility, the complexity of control when performing a maneuver require the driver to be especially careful in order to avoid an accident.

Who is guilty?

The increased danger of a car moving in reverse is the likelihood of a collision with a vehicle, a collision with a pedestrian. But is the driver always to blame? Often, scammers use road accidents for auto-fraud. It follows from the SDA that in the event of an accident involving a car that was moving in reverse, the driver of this car is always to blame.

The rules allow in case of complex traffic situation resort to the help of passengers, pedestrians, eyewitnesses of the incident. A person helping the driver to make a maneuver will be able to give a gesture to other drivers, follow the sudden appearance of obstacles.

Important! Be especially careful when reversing when parking, leaving parking lots, making a U-turn in a limited area. In the event of a collision, call a car lawyer for help.

Punishment and responsibility

If the driver does not comply with the rules for performing maneuvers, the inspector will indicate this in the protocol as aggravating circumstances, and the court will take it into account when making a decision.

Reversing is prohibited by signs:

  • "brick" (fine 500 rubles);
  • “entry prohibited”, except for route vehicles (fine 5,000 rubles or deprivation of a driving license for 4-6 months);
  • "Movement is prohibited" (fine 500 rubles). It is not installed when entering one-way roads.

Important! According to part 2 of article 12.14 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation, an administrative fine of 500 rubles is provided for a U-turn or reversing in places where such an action is prohibited. The exception is the cases specified in Part 3 of Article 12.11 and Part 2 of Article 12.16 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation.

Arbitrage practice

No matter how hard the traffic police inspectors try, reversing along a one-way street does not entail a fine of 5,000 rubles or deprivation of rights for a period of 4-6 months, as indicated in part 3 of article 12.16 of the Code of Administrative Offenses. The Plenum of the Supreme Court in the ruling believes that this severe punishment is only applied when reversing if the driver ignores the "brick" sign.

Important! Clause 7.1. Resolutions of the Plenum Supreme Court RF dated 10.24.2006 No. 18 states that under part 2 of article 12.14 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation, it is necessary to qualify the driver's actions for turning around or reversing in places where such maneuvers are prohibited, with the exception of cases provided for by part 3 of article 12.11 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation .

Directly such a ban is established on:

  • pedestrian crossings;
  • in tunnels;
  • on bridges, viaducts, overpasses and under them;
  • at railway crossings;
  • in places where the visibility of the road in at least one direction is less than one hundred meters;
  • at the stops of route vehicles;
  • at the crossroads.

The qualification of the driver's actions to make a U-turn on the motorway, to enter the technological gaps of the dividing strip on the motorway or to reverse on it is subject to the norm of part 3 of article 12.11 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation.

Now all courts are obliged to take into account the Decree of the Plenum of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation when considering such cases. If drivers are involved in an accident involving reversing the car, we recommend that you seek help from experienced lawyers who will provide professional support in a difficult situation, have deep knowledge judicial practice on this issue.

ATTENTION! Due to recent changes in legislation, the information in the article could be out of date! Our lawyer will advise you free of charge.

All cars have technical capability move backwards. But if you abuse it, it is easy to run into punishment. Indeed, with such a maneuver, the driver sees the road much worse, thereby increasing the danger of movement.

Sometimes this option is more appropriate than the usual way of movement. But maneuver is allowed in strictly defined places and situations:

  • where there is no intersection;
  • if necessary, leave the yard or enter its territory;
  • on sections of the road where a U-turn is allowed;
  • in areas with poor visibility of the road, if the driver has the opportunity to use the help of other people during the action;
  • if necessary, on a one-way road subject to certain rules.

In all cases, a prerequisite for the implementation of the maneuver is the absence of other objects (cars, people, other obstacles) on the way of the car. Before starting to reverse, he must make sure that this method of movement is safe. And it has no right to interfere with pedestrians, other cars follow their trajectory. In the SDA, the requirements for the implementation of the maneuver are reflected in paragraph 8.12:

The movement of the vehicle in reverse is permitted provided that this maneuver is safe and does not interfere with other road users. If necessary, the driver must enlist the assistance of other persons.

Signs warning about the prohibition of maneuver

The inadmissibility of reversing on the road is indicated by special symbols:

  • "No entry";
  • "Movement Prohibition".

Violating the rule, in some cases you can run into a fine of 5000 rubles. or stay without driving license for 4 - 6 months. This will happen if the car is driving backwards in the opposite direction in a one-way lane, interfering with others. Violation is punishable under part 3 of article 12.16.

But “brick” and “no traffic” are not all signs that deny drivers the right to maneuver. There are also symbols 5.1 "motorway" and 5.3 "road for cars". The ban also applies to them. In the first case, according to paragraph 16.1 of the SDA:

On motorways it is prohibited:

● training ride.

Symbol 5.3 in relation to the ability to drive in reverse works in a similar way, since a U-turn is prohibited in its coverage area. This is regulated by traffic rules:

Road sign for special regulations 5.3 Road for cars means a road reserved for the traffic of cars, buses and motorcycles only. And, introduces the driving mode set out in section 16 of the SDA for driving on motorways.

When will the fine be and what in 2017

The driver risks being punished if his car moves backwards in the following cases:

  • at or near a pedestrian crossing;
  • in the tunnel
  • in the public transport stop zone;
  • at the crossroads;
  • on a bridge or overpass;
  • through the overpass;
  • at a railway crossing;
  • in the zone of limited visibility, if paragraph 8.12 of the traffic rules is violated.

This maneuver in these areas can be very dangerous for the motorist performing it and other people. And therefore, punishment is imposed for this, regulated by various articles of the Code of Administrative Offenses. And the ban itself is in paragraph 8.11 of the SDA.

For one-way traffic

Punishment for driving in reverse can be applied not only in the event of an accident due to it. But in the event of an accident, it is the driver who applied the maneuver that will become the culprit, which is confirmed by legal practice. In other cases, he will have to pay a fine.

At the crossroads

Moving a car backwards at an intersection is punishable under part 4 of Article 12.14 of the Code of Administrative Offenses. This is a $500 fine. A violation can be recorded by a camera or a traffic police officer, the amount of payment does not change from this.

It is not worth taking risks on this section of the road, despite the modest size of the fine. Crossroads are one of the most dangerous places to maneuver, because cars here rush in different directions. And driving in reverse can lead to a collision.

By the side of the road

The punishment for driving in reverse on the side of the road is regulated by part 2 of Article 12.14. The forced monetary payment for the misconduct will be 500 rubles. The danger of an accident here is also great because of the possibility of parking on the side of the road for other cars.

A similar punishment awaits a driver whose vehicle has moved along the median lane in this way. The same article of the Code works here.

By motorway

More dangerous than in previous cases, a violation committed on the highway. And the punishment for misconduct is regulated by another article of the Code - 12.11, part 3. The fine here will increase to 2500 rubles. And the danger of a strong collision with another car increases many times over. After all, this section of the road usually travel at high speed.

At the pedestrian crossing

The pedestrian zone on the roadway is a taboo for motorists. This also applies to driving in reverse. For it on this section of the road, as well as 5 m from the "zebra", the driver will have to pay a fine of 500 rubles. Part 2 of Article 12.14 of the Code of Administrative Offenses applies here. And if reversing resulted in a collision with a pedestrian, other sections of the Code will apply.

About when it is allowed to drive in reverse, and in what cases this will entail punishment for the driver, see this video:

How to Reduce the Chance of DPT When Reversing

And yet, in some cases, it is indispensable to pass a little on the back of the car. The driver must take all possible measures to avoid an accident. He should first understand in each situation what to pay special attention to:

Driving in reverse requires some experience and, of course, compliance with traffic rules. Neglecting them when performing a maneuver can cost more than a fine, because it becomes a frequent cause of an accident. A careless driver can also be easy prey for auto-substitutes. Therefore, you need to hand over backwards by car, concentrating not only on the road, but also paying attention to the environment.
