Compare the new Tiguan and Mazda cx 5. Russian conveyor: the new Volkswagen Tiguan against three Japanese bestsellers

Different models that came to our roads from the European and Asian continents. Slightly conservative, in appearance, strict Volkswagen Tiguan and daring, assertive Mazda.

Both cars belong to a fashionable, lately, class compact crossovers.

A bit of history

Both brands, Volkswagen and Mazda, are well known in the world for their striking models. Mazda CX - 5 appeared in the form of its concept car in 2011 at the Geneva Motor Show. This car, according to the plan of the leadership of the Japanese concern, was to fill the free window in the model line.

The manufacturers of Das Auto had a similar desire. Tiguan was born in 2007 at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

The brand name "Mazda" is given to the car in honor of the God of Light, one of the oldest religions. Tiguan turned out as a result of a merger, as conceived by German manufacturers, a tiger and an iguana, the qualities of which should be present in the Tiguan model.

Description of models

The latest generations of Tiguan and CX-5 differ from the original versions that stood at the origins. This is especially noticeable in the Tiguan. Model latest generation 2016 will appear before motorists in three body styles: standard, extended and coupe. The platform for everyone will be the MQB architecture, which was the basis of the third Audi, Golf and Skoda Octavia. Tiguan has noticeably grown up, matured. From an imperfect youth, he turned into an adult model, combining the conservatism of older relatives, for example, the Tuareg, and new, modern features.

Mazda CX-5 has undergone less transformation, compared to the first generation, has become more strict, solid. Power, dignity - the hallmark of a new generation model. The Mazda CX-5 concept was embodied in the slogan coined by the manufacturers of the Rising Sun: "KODO - the soul of movement."

Exterior

The new Tiguan is impressive. He lost the former conservatism of the appearance of the German burghers and turned into a young prince, our contemporary. Its dimensions are 4486 mm x 1839 mm x 1670 mm, wheelbase 2681 mm. The Asian slanted smile, created by narrowed optics, goes well with big wheels and arched space. A powerful embossed hood gives the appearance of Tiguan great respectability.

Mazda CX-5 attracts with a more powerful look, giving the model a regal posture. Fashionable optics of DRL LEDs makes the exterior of a Japanese woman more modern look. The famous family grille with the logo is still majestic and reminds of the authority of the brand. Dimensions SH-5: 4555 mm x 1840 mm x 1670 mm, width between the axles of the car - 2700 mm. Height ground clearance is 215 mm, which is 15 mm more than the opponent from Germany.

Salon interior

The situation inside the Tiguan has also changed. There were more interesting interior design options, a two-tone finishing solution, a convenient multifunctional steering wheel of a modified shape, a push-button hand brake. An interesting multimedia system that gives the driver complete information about the state of the outside and inside the car, small chrome inserts that enliven the interior, compared to previous generations - all this speaks of the great work done by the German concern.

salon decor, dashboard more restrained. The Japanese are strong in their natural quality: rationality and ergonomics. Everything in the cabin is subordinated to the creation of a working environment. There is no need to reach for control knobs, numerous regulators - everything is at hand. Chairs of a new type were installed, very comfortable, perfectly holding the human body.

There is dissatisfaction on the part of Mazda users that the sound insulation does not correspond to the class of the car. Manufacturers claim that they have improved the quality in this matter by 10%. In this aspect, you can’t find fault with the Tiguan - the noise level is at the proper height.

In terms of luggage compartment, the Volkswagen Tiguan has the advantage. In the normal position - 615 liters, in the transformed position - 1655. The Mazda CX-5 is inferior in both indicators. The luggage compartment standard is 403 liters, unfolded - 1500 liters.

under the hood

The best option in power line Mazda CX-5 engines for 2016 is considered a reliable 2.5-liter gasoline engine with a power of 192 hp. with. with a torque of 256 Nm. Its top speed is 194 km / h and acceleration to a hundred is obtained in 7.9 seconds.

Tiguan has more engines on offer: four petrol and one diesel. All have a turbocharging system and comply with Euro-6 standards. Top - two-liter with a capacity of 220 liters. with.

Summing up

In terms of cost, both models are in the same price segment - one million plus two to three hundred thousand rubles. Mazda CX-5 is a crossover for the metropolis. Tiguan may well match the type of SUV. This is also evidenced by the clearance, the modes of passing road conditions, the ability to climb slopes. The Japanese woman is more impulsive and ambitious by nature, the Tiguan is more realistic. What's better? Choose according to the nature of the person.

Each of them has at least 170 hp under the hood, transmissions - automatic and all-wheel drive, and a sign "Made in Russia" on the body. Vladivostok Mazda CX-5, Petersburg Nissan X-Trail and Toyota RAV4 - all with 2.5 aspirated. And Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0TSI Kaluga assembly- a new, second generation. Who is better adapted to our realities?

W ima! A peasant, triumphant... Well, in our case, let there be a city dweller who renews the path on a crossover. Doesn't he freeze? First of all, we measured the efficiency of the heaters, and it is not bad for the whole four. But only Toyota and Volkswagen can boast of a warm steering wheel and rear seats, albeit for an extra charge. The ability to easily flutter into the cabin without getting your hands dirty first, and then your clothes? The front part of the X-Trail thresholds, unlike the others, does not cover the doors. And by the way, Nissan and Volkswagen will allow brushes that freeze in snowfall to be beaten only in the service, vertical, position of the leashes, when the engine is turned off. So the leaders in winter practicality are Toyota.

The RAV4, with its precise seating geometry in tight seats, is also good in terms of ergonomics. But Tiguan is still preferable. It does not have even the slightest flaws, of which the RAV4 is in abundance. In Volkswagen, the buttons are not scattered around the cabin like salt on the sidewalk, but are grouped by function. There is no need, as in Toyota, to look under the canopy of the front panel in search of the right key, and the climate control display does not glare. Volkswagen can only be blamed for the inability to control an expensive multimedia system with gloves.

Adaptive cruise control is an option. But all Tiguans have a radar by default: the Front Assist auto-braking system is already “in the database”

The traction control system is switched off in one movement

For the left foot in Tiguan, the most convenient park square

Even two-liter bottles can be placed in the door pockets

The electrified seat can remember the settings of three drivers

If Toyota has succeeded in soft look plastics, then Volkswagen is a pioneer in hard look materials, hard to look at, but soft to the touch.

At Apple's request, there should be one USB port, and Volkswagen does not want to add connectors for recharging gadgets so that people do not get confused in the abundance of USB sockets

Non-locking glove box, also the smallest, but inside it is trimmed with “velvet” and the multimedia module has two slots for SD cards

Self-parking is currently only offered by Nissan and Volkswagen

Accuracy in everything: even the cup holders are covered with a curtain. It's a pity they're pushed back a lot

Despite the abundance of corners, Tiguan's decoration can hardly be attributed to the creations of cubist artists. Rather, it is Saxon traditionalism in a modern reading.

In Mazda and Nissan, the seats are more relaxed, which will appeal to people in the body, but slender people are unlikely to appreciate it. But the CX-5 and X-Trail, unlike the RAV4, are at least as good as the Tiguan in a sense of quality: an abundance of pliable plastic, precise fitting of panels, even stitches on the upholstery.

Buyers of the Highline version (so far the only equipment for two-liter Tiguans) will not be able to refuse virtual instruments similar to those used in the Passat

And why do all four save on passengers? upholstery rear doors, unlike the front ones, without softness. Practicality is also less: door pockets are more modest, folding tables are only in Tiguan. Only Volkswagen can provide three-zone climate control, while Mazda and Toyota don’t even have deflectors in the center!

Four modes (winter, highway, off-road, individual) are more of a whim than a necessity. So, for example, in an off-road vehicle, for some reason, the traction control system is turned off, and with it the imitation of wheel locks. As a result, it crawls better along gullies when the switch is in the asphalt position">

The new Tiguan no longer has a hydromechanical "automatic", but the most reliable of the preselectives - a seven-speed "robot" DQ500 with wet clutches
Four modes (winter, highway, off-road, individual) are more of a whim than a necessity. So, for example, in an off-road vehicle, for some reason, the traction control system is turned off, and with it the imitation of wheel locks. As a result, the Tiguan crawls better on gullies when the switch is in the asphalt position.

But if the CX-5 turned out to be the cramped in this quartet, then the RAV4 is the most spacious. In Nissan, when three of us land, tall people come into contact with the roof slope: the giant Rastegaev last year. And in Volkswagen, the massive central tunnel and the molding of the rear sofa interfere: the extreme riders move out to the one in the center. Toyota is no problem. And only in it you can lean back in order to sleep: the largest range of backrest adjustment.

Three-zone climate control in the two-liter Tiguan "in the base"! But the rear sofa heating option ">

To be a benchmark, it would be nice for Tiguan's luxurious seat to get adjustable lateral support so that the heavy ones do not complain about tightness, and the thin ones do not complain about excessive freedom.
Tri-zone climate control and back seat heating

Of course, the Volkswagen has a double floor, and the Nissan has a partition, with whose help the trunk can be made two-story. And both have a longitudinal adjustment of the rear sofa, which allows you to increase the volume for luggage to the level of Toyota and Mazda. But riders will definitely remember how you infringed on their freedom during the trip for the sake of luggage.

Volkswagen is traditionally attentive to luggage details: a hook for bags, a button for folding the rear sofa, an outlet and even a flashlight

In the meantime, there are no passengers, you can drive. After all, it’s not for nothing that we took the most powerful versions, right?

Trick #1 for the traffic light champion - translate power unit into Sport mode and start with two pedals. But this allows you to win only 0.1-0.2 s in the time to set "hundreds". More important life hack number 2 - disable ESP. A slight slip allows you to raise the engine speed, and the electronics do not stifle its impulse.

What do these seemingly completely different crossovers have in common? The handsome Mazda CX-5 from Japan and the slightly conservative Volkswagen Tiguan from Germany - which of them has the most modern options in terms of control and safety, who will “smear” whom on the track, and whose wheels will not slip in impassable off-road mud - these and other questions will be answered only by a full-scale test drive.

Let's start, perhaps.

Public Favorite

So, the Japanese compact crossover Mazda CX-5 was first introduced to the general public in 2011. Its main task is to replace the unpopular predecessor of the CX-7 model. IN 2014 year Mazda CX-5 acquired after restyling modern exterior lines, updated salon, significantly improved sound insulation. For a relatively short path of existence (7 years), the model has received many awards, including trophies for the use of technological innovative ideas, safety, appearance. Among the CX-5 awards and titles are the SUV Trophy, Car of the Year 2012-2013, Best British SUV, SUV of the Year 2012, etc. All these regalia allow you to look at the crossover from a different point of view: it means , Mazda CX-5 really deserves the title of one of the most best crossovers modernity.

And what can the Volkswagen Tiguan boast of?

Tiguan first generation was released in 2007. Updated Volkswagen Tiguan 2 generation was presented to the audience last year, 2015. The German crossover, of course, cannot boast of the variety of its titles and trophies, but nevertheless it was also noted as the winner in the Compact SUV category, as part of one of the American competitions, and as a silver medalist in the Apeal Studie rating. The new Tiguan differs from its predecessor in literally everything: the sharp exterior design is very different from the rough Tiguan of the first generation, the front of the car has been completely reconstructed, the shape of the headlights has been changed, etc. Of course, the appearance is quite recognizable, but has undergone significant changes for the better: a crossover now features a more modern and sporty style.

We meet by clothes

Say what you like, but specifically the Russian buyer first of all looks at the exterior of the car. Appearance, which allows you to immediately stand out from the gray mass of the traffic flow and make yourself known, plays a big role. Modern automotive designers use every opportunity to highlight the appearance of their model, make it instantly recognizable, attractive and at the same time functional.

Light and precise design lines of the concept called "KODO - the soul of movement" make the appearance of the Mazda CX-5 recognizable at first sight: a resolute and daring body makes the car look more like a predatory beast than an ordinary car. This is understandable, because the KODO concept takes the power and smooth running of the cheetah as a source of inspiration. For increased dynamism while driving, special aerodynamic technologies were used in the manufacture of body elements. Slightly extended grin of the radiator grille, “narrowed” headlights - yes, the CX-5 is ready to show itself in any situation!

The whole arrangement of the car interior after restyling works in such a way that the driver immediately begins to feel one with the car. The Japanese are especially proud of the unique MZD Connect infotainment system, which allows you to receive information and communicate with friends while driving.

The interior trim is made in the style of a premium class, you can’t argue with that. Only the most expensive and high-quality materials, meticulous attention to detail and passenger comfort - that's what the Mazda CX-5 is all about.

The more restrained conservative 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan generally continues the tradition of the automotive industry German concern. The only thing is that when you get into the interior of a car, you can’t immediately understand which Tiguan you are in: the changes are rather poorly worked out compared to previous models. A simple control panel, no modern artsy “things” and newfangled super options - probably, such a salon is the dream of any man wise over the years!

The cabin is spacious enough, for which you can also pay tribute to the designers, because the car is only 4426 mm long and the width reaches 2041 mm. The height of the Tiguan is slightly higher than the Mazda - 1703 mm. At the same time, the car is quite weighty: its weight is as much as 1522 kg. Given a clearance of 200 mm, it is much more difficult for him to crawl over obstacles in a loaded state than Mazda.

If you evaluate the appearance of the new Volkswagen Tiguan, then you definitely won’t get the habits of a cheetah from it. But now, if you need rigor and correctness, then you definitely go to the salon for the “German”.

A few words about the choice of kits ...

Mazda CX-5 in Russia is represented by official dealers in 4 trim levels: Drive, Active, Supreme and Active+. There are two engines to choose from: 2.0 sky 6AT 2 WD for 150 Horse power and 2.0 sky 6MT 2 WD, also for 150 horses. The price of the basic Drive package is from 1,299,000 rubles.
Volkswagen Tiguan has a slightly wider choice: 6 versions - Allstar, Sport, Club, Avenue, Trend&Fun and Track&Field. Models are available with different gasoline engines turbocharged: 1.4 for 122 horses with 6 manual transmission, 1.4 for 150 horses with 6 automatic transmission with two clutches, 2.0 for 180 horses with 6 automatic transmissions and 2.0 for 211 horses with 7 automatic transmissions with two clutches. There are plenty to choose from! The cost of Tiguan starts from 1,329,000 rubles (Avenue version). That is, in fact, if we talk about the price of two crossovers, then they are almost on the same level. But with all this German manufacturer offers a wider range of modifications, which contributes to satisfying the needs of any category of customers.

Question price?

However, what is offered for this money? The grace of a cheetah and the calm confidence of a German? And what specifications can show these crossovers on the roads of the city and anti-roads of broken sections of the tracks?

Japanese CX-5 squeezes the speed to 100 km / h in 7.9 seconds, fuel consumption in the combined cycle is only 7.3 liters per hundred. For a crossover, it’s quite good performance, isn’t it?

Tiguan accelerates in 9.9 seconds and consumes 6.5 liters of fuel in a combined driving cycle. In principle, it will show itself a little weaker on flat sections of roads, but it will be more economical for its owner, which can also be noted as a plus.
Speaking about these two road conquerors, we should also talk about those modern options that have gained due respect from motorists.

Applied to the Mazda CX-5, this is, of course, SkyActive technology, which serves one purpose: to reduce fuel costs without losing power. Therefore, the driver in any situation will be 100% sure of his "Japanese"! Features of the body, made using a technology called SKYACTIV-BODY, are also designed to lighten the overall weight of the car, give it extra speed and save on fuel. Front and rear suspension almost perfectly hold the roads of any surface, the car became smoother and softer. Embedded system in the car active safety, thanks to which the Mazda CX-5 is currently considered one of the most safe cars in the world! And this is already a huge achievement: we put a big plus for the Japanese. In addition, the Driver Attention Alerts system is constantly operating in the cabin, which monitors the driver's condition. I would also like to mention systems such as SCBS - safe braking within the city, RCTA - signaling during cross traffic, BSM - control of dead zones, etc. All these options are really necessary for an urban crossover when driving through the labyrinths of large parking lots or maneuvers on busy streets.

Volkswagen Tiguan, on the other hand, always and everywhere remains true to tradition: unsurpassed grip with the road is opened to it by the use of a 4 Motion drive, which will allow you to distribute the load on all axles and wheels, eliminating the possibility of slipping. The new technology for BlueMotion engines allows you to save fuel and significantly reduce the emission of pollutants into the environment, which is also very important for an urban crossover. It is also worth mentioning here that the new Volkswagen Tiguan 2016-2017 has not yet gone on sale, data on its characteristics and prices are also hushed up at the moment. But the manufacturer promises that it will be something! It is possible that the updated Tiguan will become one of the leaders in the global urban crossover market!

And what is the result?

In general, everything is clear with the main advantages of the Mazda CX-5 and Volkswagen Tiguan: the first is bright, innovative and super economical, the second is a classic crossover with a self-confident exterior. The characteristics as a whole provide a comfortable ride and easy control of crossovers, even “stuffed” with all sorts of options, the CX-5 is intuitive to any driver. Good handling, fast acceleration, maneuverability in difficult driving situations, the focus on efficiency brings Mazda CX-5 and Volkswagen Tiguan closer together. However, in general, this is completely different cars faithful to the traditions of their producers.

The Volkswagen and Mazda brands are known all over the world. The first is German, and the second is Japanese. Each has its fans and both have proven themselves to be excellent quality vehicles. The more interesting it will be to compare two crossover models from these companies and find out which is better - Volkswagen Tiguan or Mazda CX-5.

Note that one of the contenders is a typical European, and the second is a Japanese. Cultures are very different, so a comparison should reveal a lot of differences. Let's see if that's the case.

Specifications

Both cars are 5-seater and 5-door crossovers. Tiguan is all-wheel drive, and Mazda is front-wheel drive in the minimum configuration, but you can also get four-wheel drive by paying more. Consider the main characteristics of these cars.

Main dimensions:

  • Length 4425 mm.
  • Width 1808 mm.
  • Height 1683 mm.
  • 200 mm.

Tiguan is available in 4 trim levels. TSI engine can be gasoline or diesel, 1.4 or 2 liters, different power- from 111 l. with. up to 171 l. with. Fuel consumption ranges from 6.2 to 8.6 liters for various engines.

Gearbox 6-speed, manual or robot. For Europe, a 7-speed automatic is installed.

The steering wheel has an electric booster and disc brakes. Is there an ABS system? Tire pressure is monitored, there is a course stability system. The main beam automatically turns on if dusk falls and the speed exceeds 60 km / h, it also automatically switches to low beam when there is oncoming traffic.

Tiguan is one of the safest models. According to the results of crash tests, experts gave him the highest rating - 5 points. Both the driver and passenger seats are equipped with front and side airbags.

Main dimensions:

  • Length 4551 mm.
  • Width 1841 mm.
  • Height 1671 mm.
  • Ground clearance 216 mm.

The Mazda CX-5 is produced in three trim levels, but the choice of engines is small - only gasoline, 2 liters and 150 hp. s, or 2.5 liters and 193 liters. with. Fuel consumption - 6 l / 100 km. Box 6-speed, manual or automatic.

This crossover is also equipped with ABS and braking systems for the city, tire pressure monitoring.

Also, automation controls external lighting, recognizes road signs, controls blind spots.

In terms of safety, this crossover is not inferior to the Tiguan and is also equipped with airbags. In addition, here the seat belts in the front seats can be adjusted in height.

The volume and comfort of the cabin and trunk

The interior space of both crossovers is sufficient for a person of average height to feel quite comfortable. Three passengers can sit in the rear seats, moreover, without resting their heads on the ceiling, and with their knees on the front seats. But there are also some differences.

In the Tiguan, the back row is a bit more spacious. Parts of the seat are mounted on skids and can be moved back and forth. This allows you to slightly increase the space for passengers or, conversely, the volume of the trunk. The middle back leans forward, turning into a comfortable table with cup holders. The backrests can also be adjusted for added comfort.

AT Mazda medium the back does not turn into a table, but there is a little more space for passengers in the back seat. For 2019, this, of course, looks rather poor, since no special adjustments are provided there.

Both crossovers have a common advantage - their doors are made in such a way that they completely cover the thresholds, so they do not get dirty when driving. This saves clothes from dirt, which passengers of other cars often get into.

As for the luggage compartment, it can increase due to the folded rear seats. In Tiguan, its volume in the normal state is 469 liters, and in the extended state - 1509 liters. Mazda has 402 and 1560 liters, respectively. Comparison and CX-5 in this regard does not reveal any particular advantages in any of the applicants. Although the Mazda trunk allows you to place suitcases more conveniently - luggage compartment She's a little lower, but longer.

The ability to fold the middle backrest allows you to carry long items, while keeping two passenger seats in the back. So you can put, for example, skis, and they will not interfere with anyone.

Driving comfort

Volkswagen Tiguan in terms of control exceeds all expectations and behaves like. He listens to the steering wheel perfectly, instantly reacts to the brake pedal, and enters the turns just fine. In a straight line, he walks steadily and evenly. Although this crossover has a high center of gravity, it is not felt at all. Excellent suspension perfectly smooths out small bumps in the road, and it is difficult to break through it even on serious bumps.

Mazda CX-5 handling is no worse, but does not cause the same enthusiasm. This car keeps a straight line perfectly, reacts to the brakes no worse, and in some ways even better than the Tiguan. But this is still a car for those who like a calm, measured ride, and do not twitch at every movement of the steering wheel. Mazda's behavior is more restrained and balanced.

If we compare the CX-5 vs Tiguan, then the first car is more suitable for people who like to drive calmly, without unnecessary movements, from point A to point B. Tiguan is for drive lovers, those who enjoy driving a powerful car that obediently responds to any motion.

Dynamics

On the road, the Tiguan is great - it develops power that easily carries the car forward. At the same time, the box also does not cause any complaints - the machine switches easily and quickly. It is seen that in this Volkswagen models applied all his experience, providing it with excellent parameters. At the same time, fuel consumption in any driving style is very moderate.

If you compare the Mazda CX-5 with the Tiguan, then this car is not so frisky. It's not weak engine- its power is quite enough, and it even has more horses in the base. But the automatic transmission restrains his impulses. Therefore, all the capabilities of the machine are manifested in manual mode, in which it is really good.

patency

Both cars are quite suitable for driving on bad roads. Bad means uneven and broken, like most Russian ones. Their suspensions completely smooth out many irregularities and have a sufficient margin of safety so as not to crumble in the first hole.

But we must keep in mind that these are still not SUVs, and trips over rough terrain and other off-road conditions are not for them. The clearance is not so great to overcome large holes, and there is a risk of getting stuck in some kind of puddle. And if the Tiguan can still go all-wheel drive, then for the front-wheel drive Mazda it is more difficult.

In general, these cars are not fighters with harsh domestic off-road conditions, and if there is no tractor nearby, you should not check it. These are great cars for the city, for the track, and rare trips to fishing or barbecue with the family, in good weather. But these are far from all-terrain vehicles.

Price and cost of ownership

If you compare the cost of both cars, then it is not very different, although the Mazda is slightly more expensive. It starts from one and a half million and further, depending on the selected configuration. In the database, they have few differences, except in small things - Mazda has a USB connector and a regular air conditioner, while Tiguan has climate control and heated mirrors, but there are no other small things.

But the most important thing that worries before buying is the cost of further maintenance. In this regard, the Tiguan has some problems, although it costs a little less. Car owners reported problems with cardan shaft on a run of 60 thousand kilometers for an all-wheel drive modification, engine breakdowns occur, there are problems with turbines, collectors. All of this adds up to a lot of maintenance. For Mazda, such problems are an exception, they practically do not occur, and its maintenance will cost less.

In general, if you compare which is better - Mazda CX-5 or Tiguan, then there is not much difference. Both cars are quite high quality, safe and have approximately the same characteristics. Therefore, when choosing, you can be guided by preferences for design, interior convenience, and equipment. Be that as it may, neither the owners of the Tiguan, nor the owners of the CX-5 speak very kindly about their cars? So, both models are good and easy to use.

And, I must say, the weapons they brandish in front of each other can be noticeably different. Well, the more interesting it will be to compare one of the leaders with the most anticipated new product - especially since their methods of combat are very, very different.

Unity and struggle of opposites

Tiguan is an experienced player in our market: it has been on sale for more than a year and is inferior in popularity only to a couple of Nissans - Qashqai and Juku - which are both cheaper and smaller than Volkswagen. Being a born German of the purest blood, "Tiga" came to Russia at one time - and so it remained here, settling on the conveyor of a plant in Kaluga. Relatively recently, the crossover went through a restyling procedure, having received a respectable face in the spirit of an older Tuareg with a sliced chrome “grill” and front optics decorated with LED stars.

But the Mazda looks great too! It is understandable: this is the most new crossover in the Russian market; and unlike the Russified Volkswagen, without exception, all CX-5s come to us straight from Japan. The crossover was the first to try on a common mask, which other models intend to put on in the near future Japanese brand: in particular, the new Mazda 6 will also have a similarly designed nose with a vertical grille from which shiny needles stick out, penetrating sharp-angled headlights. Iron waves run along the sides of the CX-5, raising elegant ceiling lamps of the rear optics under the very glass of the fifth door. Beautiful Mazda!

In general, both cars are good, but each in its own way: from the “German” it pulls with metal, and from the “Japanese” it breathes with wildlife. But the appearance of these cars only indicates the obvious dissimilarity of these two compact crossovers: the differences between them are much more significant than it seems at first glance. Volkswagen called under its banner an army of turbo engines, both gasoline and diesel, and Mazda decided to squeeze all the juice out of a single gasoline engine (turbo diesel is not yet supplied to the Russian market).

Well, let's see whose strategy will be more advantageous.

One step away from ideal

Both cars and in the cabin serve themselves in completely different ways. The Tiguan turns out to be predictable, but it is precisely this quality that makes one admire it. Everything in it is expectedly good: an exemplary selection of finishing materials, and crystal-clear instruments in style and informativeness, and chic steering wheel lined with surprisingly pleasant velvety leather. At first it seems that the Germans were too clever with the keys on the steering wheel spokes, but in the process of using you understand how well they are organized. The process of communication with the multimedia system is full of mutual understanding: it is always clear which buttons to press and where to “touchscreen”.

The only moment that made me fidget is related to the search for a comfortable fit. Although I am short in stature, I still prefer to stay closer to the floor; however, the Tiguan, regardless of my desire, offered me a perch: steering column even in the lowest position, it holds the “steering wheel” too high, forcing the chair to be raised higher than we would like.

Salon "Mazda" looks more simple - even, perhaps, too simple. And the glossy stripe on the front panel, which separates the top from the bottom, seems a little far-fetched. True, the light leather wrapped in chairs and door panels makes the interior of the CX-5 very elegant - of course, at the expense of practicality. The materials are also good: everything is soft and pliable where needed. And the steering wheel is very good, although it is inferior to the German one. But the landing is more convenient - if only because the Mazda does not resist my aspirations to sit down the way I want.

And yet, the logic in the Japanese car is slightly less. The white illumination of the instruments is dissonant with the orange climate control, the primitive graphics of which are clearly inferior in clarity to the small “fireflies” framing the “twists” of the Tiguan. In addition, in poor trim levels without a multimedia “twist” on the central tunnel and a color display, the CX-5 looks more modest.

Keep clean!

In the back row of the Tiguan, you do not feel embarrassed: high-set seats leave enough legroom. Enough stock and the ceiling. In addition, the unequal “halves” of the back row can move back and forth on the skids, but this is more of a curtsy in favor of the trunk than a concern for passengers. But the ability to adjust the backrests should definitely be written down as a plus for "Tige" - as well as "aviation" tables with "cup" holes.

"Mazda" is deprived of such excesses - her sofa is static. But it is a little more spacious on it than in the Volkswagen, and the doorway of the CX-5 is not so restrained by the arch. rear wheel. And three passengers can easily fit in both a German and a Japanese car. But the main thing is that you can get into both the front seats and the second row without staining your pants: the configuration of the doors is such that they completely cover the thresholds, leaving them pristine.

Addition Formula

Two large suitcases do not enter the trunk of a Volkswagen, but are squeezed in, filling almost the entire space with them. This is where the opportunity to ask passengers to move comes in handy - but how will they react to such an initiative?

In the Mazda, suitcases live much more freely: the cargo area is longer in any situation of the sofa, and the loading height is a couple of centimeters lower. But the folding mechanism of the rear row causes the most delight: its back consists of three parts, each of which falls at the behest of the most convenient handles on the walls of the hold. By the way, for reference: both cars allow you to transport, for example, skis and at the same time remain four-seater: the central part of the sofa reclines in both the Tiguan and the CX-5.

Desire and opportunity

Even with the base 122-horsepower 1.4TSI turbo engine on hand german crossover radiates with health: a couple of hundred newton meters make the car run very fast. And with more powerful engines Volkswagen becomes completely unstoppable: perhaps, except for the 190-horsepower Dzhuk, no one will be able to outrun the Tiga in this price environment. In addition, the Volkswagen arsenal also has a wunderwaffe - a 140-horsepower diesel engine, which not only has good luck, but also has a more than moderate appetite: you need to try very hard to make it consume more than eight liters per hundred even with an aggressive city ride! By the way, all 2-liter modifications (including diesel) are equipped with an “automatic”, which has no complaints and cannot be: the box juggles six gears surprisingly deftly.

"Mazda" for "Tiguan" can not keep up. She simply does not want to go fast, but not because of a lack of opportunities, but because of her character: the Japanese have brought up abstinence in her too diligently. "Automatic" at the first opportunity tries to tuck in the engine - and, let me remind you, the CX-5 has only one (later a diesel engine is promised, but so far there is no need to choose). And although in fact the Mazda can accelerate quite briskly, it does it really well only in manual mode. Yes, yes, this is the rare case when such a regime is not a pleasant opportunity, but an urgent need.

Thirst drive

Driving habits "Volkswagen" - a role model: accurate steering, extremely specific reactions to the actions of the driver and complete mutual understanding on an intuitive level. It is felt that every turn of the car is a joy! At the heart of the Tiguan is the excellent chassis of the Golf, and the crossover rides no worse than a hatchback. You don't even have to make a correction for a higher center of gravity - it's not felt at all: the car has absolutely easy manners. There are no questions about the brakes either: the car stops where you tell it to. In general, here it is, the German school of drive, in all its splendor!

But Mazda is also trained to drive just as well! True, unlike the Volkswagen, she was inspired by a different code of conduct: she should not start, but appease. The "Japanese" behaves much more restrained, but in every movement she feels a reserve of confidence. The CX-5 keeps a straight line, is not prone to nervous attacks on steering actions and provides excellent deceleration: its brakes are even better than those of the Tiguan. But the temperature of the joy of driving a Mazda is definitely lower than the heat of the heady feeling of drive that the German crossover generously bestows.

On tiptoe

In the base, both Volkswagen and Mazda have front-wheel drive, and all-wheel drive appears in more expensive versions. "Tiguan" exists in several variations: urban versions of "Trend & Fun" and "Sport & Style" with a low front bumper - or "off-road" modifications of "Track & Style" and "Track & Style" with a "pursed lip". At first, it seemed to us that a German off-road-oriented car looks preferable to a Japanese one - the “hem” of the front bumper of the CX-5 seems too low. However, having tried both cars on the curb, we found out that in practice geometric differences are unlikely to reveal themselves: in order for the Volkswagen to realize its “bumper” advantage, it must fall into such conditions that are contraindicated for cars of this format. And in other disciplines, the advantage is on the side of Mazda: it has noticeably higher ground clearance, larger wheels and less weight. However, the owners of both cars can afford some encroachments on nature: the perimeter of both the Tiga and the CX-5 is selected with practical unpainted plastic, ready for contact with the planet.

flying gait

It is clear that crossovers simply must be able to work with bumps: straightening curved asphalt is the most important task, for which such cars are endowed with large wheels with thick rubber and a forgiving suspension. Or not forgiving? Volkswagen endures the hardships of our directions steadfastly: in the cabin it is well felt that the wheels are zealously working out the antics of the rails and the jumps of potholes, but there is no doubt that the suspension was loaded with a solid supply of energy intensity. The song of the engine is also quite clearly distinguishable, but it does not annoy in any way: the Tiguan has complete order with sound insulation.

But Mazda is a little different. The smoothness of the Japanese car is even better than that of the "German" (which, by the way, was shod in rubber with more high profile); and soundproofing work was carried out at the highest level. And as long as you are not going too fast on the CX-5, then everything is fine: even rustles are not heard in the garden. But one has only to ask the car for activity, succumbing to the magic pendel of the accelerator pedal, as the engine begins to scream heart-rendingly, cutting through the first-class “Shumka” with a ruthless chainsaw. And if not for the motor screams, Mazda would have been the winner in this category. And so - no.

stop in time

"Tiguan" twice went through the crucible of the EuroNCAP crash test - in 2007 and 2009 - and both times the experts noted the crashed car with the highest score. There are no reasons to doubt the safety of Volkswagen: already in the basic configuration, the crossover is equipped with six airbags and ESP, and cars for Russian market- not an exception. Well, a very correct approach!

But the CX-5 was born a little later, and just last week, the good news came from Brussels that in the EuroNCAP tests, the Mazda successfully crashed into five stars, scoring a little more points than the Volkswagen: front passengers protected by 94%, and children - by 87% ("Tiguan" - 87% and 79%, respectively). The entire arsenal of safety equipment (six airbags and a stabilization system) for the Japanese crossover is also available in the basic version. In addition, starting with the Touring trim level, the CX-5 introduces the SCBS City Brake Safety System, which helps avoid collisions when driving at low speeds - for example, in a traffic jam.

Waiting hall

Tiguan prices start at 899 thousand for a 1.4TSI front-wheel drive car with “mechanics” (122 hp), which is very well packaged: 6 airbags plus ESP, climate control, MP3 audio system, power accessories, heating front seats, central locking with remote control, on-board computer. The all-wheel drive version of 1.4TSI on the “hand” costs at least 1,014,000 rubles, and the most affordable option with an "automatic" is estimated at 1,140,000 rubles. - in this case, the motor will be more powerful (2.0TSI, 170 hp). A turbodiesel is 37 thousand more expensive, and the most powerful 200-horsepower Tiga costs from 1,293,000 rubles.

There are not so many options, and most of them are folded into packages, the contents of which depend on the version: for example, in relation to the Trend & Fan, the Technician package (14,870 rubles) includes an alarm, leather-trimmed steering wheel and gear lever, plus a front armrest ; and for the performance of "Track & Field" the same "Technician" already costs 29,760 rubles, but it will also contain a multifunctional steering wheel, cruise control and a USB slot.

The price for Mazda starts at 929,000 rubles. Such a car is more powerful than the base Tiguan, but differs slightly in terms of equipment: instead of climate control, it has a regular “condo”, but it has a USB connector, a height-adjustable driver’s seat and a tire pressure sensor. The most affordable CX-5 with automatic transmission is estimated at 1,120,000 rubles: such a car is much better equipped than the Volkswagen, but it has only front-wheel drive. And with all-wheel drive transmission and "automatic" japanese crossover costs 1,210,000 rubles. - True, and his equipment is richer than that of the Tiguan. Other things being equal, the prices for both cars are very similar. But Mazda still has one gap: full-time parking sensors or, say, native navigation can only be obtained in the expensive Touring configuration, which without fail entails unnecessary excesses like a leather interior and 19-inch wheels.
