The very concept of "crossover", by which we mean a certain intermediate between cars and serious SUVs are now devalued - everything more cars in this class is sold in front-wheel drive versions. However, we decided this: if the car's ambitions are not limited to asphalt alone, it should have all-wheel drive. Therefore, for today's comparison, we have selected three full-fledged crossovers with all-wheel drive.

DOUBLE PEDAL LAZY
Why the crossover needs an all-wheel drive transmission is understandable: without it, it turns into an ordinary station wagon, elevated above the road. Further: as a mandatory criterion, we mark an automatic box, at worst, a variator. This does not reflect in the best way on off-road potential, but “two-pedal” is in demand in the city, where these cars spend most of their lives. We decided to leave diesel versions aside - unfortunately, they are not very favored in our country yet.


With similar restrictions, the price Kia Sportage from the base 859 thousand at once jumps to 1,109,900 rubles. After a recent upgrade, the appearance of the “Korean” has undergone subtle changes, but the car is still one of the brightest representatives in its class. And the interior cannot be called frankly outdated, although the hands of an experienced beautician are clearly not enough in its design.

The cheapest Qashqai can be bought for 848,000 rubles, but this option does not meet the conditions we set, the main of which is all-wheel drive. The 4WD version is at least 1,116,000 rubles. New generation Japanese bestseller is not going to give up its positions, having acquired more interesting and life-affirming forms.

The uncontested all-wheel drive XV forces you to overpay not so much for the CVT, but for the two-liter engine, which, in terms of its characteristics, is closer to the engines of the other test participants. With this in mind, the updated car, which has been on sale since this year, becomes much more attractive.


PLUS ANY EXCESS
The most democratic configurations Classic and Comfort are intended only for versions with front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive modifications start with the Luxe equipment level, which includes almost all the necessary and desirable options. Among them are help systems when starting uphill and downhill, climate control, heated steering wheel and seats, parking sensors. Many drivers would do just fine without cruise control or a rain sensor, but in the general impressive list of equipment, these functions can hardly be considered as an attempt to impose something unnecessary on the sly. We consider this configuration to be optimal, since much of what is offered in the next Prestige looks like an obvious excess. To pay or not to pay 80 thousand for a combined seat trim, navigation, a comfortable keyless entry system and a rear-view camera is a purely individual choice. However, the very possibility of buying additional things such as leather, a roof with a panoramic view, parking assistant and other benefits of civilization, cannot but rejoice.

The SE package, with which all-wheel drive modifications begin, is only the second in terms of equipment level. Despite this, like the Sportage, she is quite wealthy. In essence, the main difference between the "Korean" and "Japanese" is only that the latter does not have a system to hold the car downhill. But is it really necessary for a car that will drive off the asphalt only on big holidays? "Subarevich" in the basic version of the PC is content with a low-powered 1.6-liter engine. With a two-liter unit, comparable in volume and power to the Qashqai and Sportage engines, it is sold at least in the SS configuration. Its equipment is very solid: in addition to security systems, heating and electric mirrors, the list of options includes an MP3 audio system with USB, a leather-trimmed steering wheel and cruise control. It is this XV that should be considered a worthy choice, although even in this version Subaru is equipped worse than rivals in optimal configurations. For xenon, you have to pay 25,000 rubles, and for a keyless entry system, coupled with a rear view camera and navigation, you will be charged 70,000 rubles. THE BORDER OF SOLUTION
Despite the declared 150 forces, the engine copes with its tasks not in the best way. Up to the mark of 60 km / h, the “Korean” is in no way inferior to its rivals, but turns sour when the speedometer needle crosses this line. The situation is not saved by the fact that only he of the whole trinity is armed automatic transmission, while the rest of the cars are equipped with a CVT. On straight sections of the road, the car behaves stably and predictably, without requiring constant steering. However, in turns, the body rolls noticeably, and the crossover itself tries to leave the trajectory, while the steering wheel demonstrates insufficient information content and accuracy. But in terms of the convenience of the driver's seat, the supply of space on the couch and the volume of the trunk, the Sportage is unrivaled.

DO NOT OVERDO IT
According to technical data, Qashqai has the most weak engine from all three. However, subjectively, he rides better than his rivals. The motor willingly accelerates the car from the very bottom and easily spins up to the red zone of the tachometer, which starts at 6400 rpm. The CVT successfully simulates gear changes and even allows you to actively brake the engine. The car clearly fits into a given arc when turning, does not strive to adjust the trajectory for itself and, moreover, does not annoy with excessive rolls - unless, of course, frankly, you do not overdo it with speed. Otherwise, the crossover begins to slide out of the turn, although it is not difficult to catch it and set it on the right path. Like the Sportage, the suspension is stiff and happily transfers the bumps from the bumps in the road surface to the cabin.

DRIVERS AND PASSION
"Subarik" is far from the most comfortable car, but it retained the driving passion from its rally ancestors. Its famous boxer produces the same 150 “horses” as the Sportage, but what a peppy start! Potholes and suspension pits do not care - the car confidently flies along the broken road, swallowing all oncoming and transverse obstacles. True, the buildup of the body on asphalt waves annoys, and the roar of the engine during intensive acceleration freely penetrates into the cabin. The vociferous boxer unit provides good acceleration dynamics at city speeds, however, when accelerating to 80 km / h, the fuse dries up - the sharp accelerations necessary for overtaking are difficult. The time has passed when Korean cars were quoted lower than Japanese ones: now the auto industry from the Land of the Morning Calm is pushing with might and main the representatives of the Land of the Rising Sun. We were convinced of this when comparing the popular KIA Sportage and Nissan Qashqai crossovers.

The new KIA Sportage looks very expressive: elegant shapes, swift lines, sporty proportions. True, it seemed to some of us that from some angles it resembles a Subaru Tribeca crossover, but in general the car turned out to be harmonious. However, and Nissan Qashqai looks invigorating. Against the background of the "Korean", his appearance can be called classic - there is continuity with the model of the previous generation.

Three power units are offered for the Sportage in Russia. Two of them are gasoline: a 2-liter atmospheric one carries 150 hp, the second, a 1.6-liter turbocharged one, already develops 177 “horses”. Well, the most powerful engine is a 185-horsepower 2-liter turbodiesel. The initial, 150-horsepower version is available with front and all-wheel drive and 6-speed gearboxes - manual and automatic. Diesel modification it can only be all-wheel drive and with an “automatic”, while the intermediate 177-horsepower version is equipped with all-wheel drive and a 7-speed “robot” with two clutches. The price range for basic configurations is from 1,189,900 to 2,069,900 rubles.

The Qashqai engine range also consists of three units, one of which is turbodiesel. But if for the Sportage the “weakest” engine develops 150 hp, then the most powerful version of the Japanese crossover has “only” 144 hp under the hood. This return has a 2-liter Gas engine. Also for the "Japanese" are offered a 1.2-liter 115-horsepower petrol turbo engine and a 1.6-liter diesel engine with 130 hp. So, our KIA Sportage is equipped with a 150-horsepower engine, all-wheel drive, "automatic" and costs 1,479,900 rubles in the basic configuration. And the test Nissan Qashqai has a 144 hp unit under the hood, it has four-wheel drive and a CVT. Such equipment costs from 1,469,000 rubles.

In pursuit of quality

Recently, we have repeatedly noted that the interiors KIA cars in terms of quality, they are very close to the premium segment. Note this time. The interior is very high quality and looks really expensive (even the hard materials around the lower perimeter look great). The driving position of the Japanese crossover is higher, and it feels even higher due to the low front panel. However, both of them are spacious - they do not press either in the legs or in the shoulders. And if the "eco" mode is turned off, Qashqai begins to be perceived as very alive. His reactions to "gas" are linear - no hitches are observed. Engine on high revs quiet enough. And the variator works great. With a quiet ride, the tachometer needle “hangs” at optimal speeds, and with vigorous acceleration, the transmission simulates gear shifting and does it very believably.

The brakes of both rivals are set up adequately. There are no problems with deceleration, although the brake pedal of the Korean crossover seemed more informative to someone from the editorial staff.

The same goes for steering wheel settings. The steering wheel at KIA is quite sharp, makes 2.75 turns from lock to lock and has a rich reactive effect. Accuracy, speed of reactions and information content at a height - the feeling when driving a "Korean" is almost light. Against his background, the "Japanese" reacts to control actions a little slower, his steering wheel makes exactly three revolutions from lock to lock. The reactive action is also quite high, but the feedback is not as good as that of a competitor. However, there are no serious complaints here either, it's just that the Sportage steering wheel is set up a little better.

On the motorway, both cars are stable even at high speeds, but the Nissan feels rutting a little more. Let's put it down to wide 19-inch wheels. The Korean crossover has 17-inch wheels with narrower and higher-profile tires, thanks to which it behaves perfectly in a rut. It would seem that with such wheels KIA should lose to a Japanese rival on a twisty track, but nothing like that. Even in steep turns, he behaves accurately and collectedly, demonstrating almost sporting habits. On the other hand, and Nissan stoically kept in corners. In principle, in terms of handling, our competitors can be put on an equal footing, however, the “Korean” feels more natural due to better steering settings.

I remember that we scolded the previous generation Nissan Qashqai for the “rattling” suspension, which began to work a little better after restyling, but until the end extraneous sounds never healed. The new generation model suffers from the same drawback, although even less pronounced. Because of this, when driving a car, there is a feeling that not everything is in order in the chassis. Otherwise, when driving on urban asphalt "average scall", the crossover behaves quite collected, although the bumps are harsh.

The Korean car also does not differ in softness of the ride. Its suspension, like that of its rival, regularly transmits all the seams and cracks of the coating to the cabin, but unlike its competitor, it makes it much quieter, which makes the overall feeling of comfort higher. And on a broken primer, the Sportage allows you to move noticeably faster than the Qashqai, because the “Japanese” is significantly inferior to it in terms of energy intensity: the KIA crossover holds up well, while the Nissan model periodically receives hard breakdowns.

Noise isolation is at a fairly high level for both competitors. At the same time, in each of them, tires “solo” at high speed, so everything here depends on the choice of brand and model of tires.

Perhaps, according to the results of the test, we are ready to give a little more points new KIA sportage. Of its shortcomings, we note not particularly successful settings for the engine and gearbox, while in other respects it outperforms the competitor, albeit not by much. Together with the Nissan Qashqai has always been and remains very good car, and the settings of its engine and variator can be taken as a standard in the class.
