So, today there are already three generations of this medium-sized crossover. Although talking "mid-size" about a seven-seat car seems a bit odd.
Indeed, in some modifications of the KIA Sorento, additional standard third-row seats are indeed provided. And, although it will not be easy to get into the third row, motorists note that traveling “in the gallery” can be very, very comfortable.
All generations of Kia Sorento
As we have said, at the moment there are three generations of this car.
Kia Motors first introduced this model in 2002 in Chicago. The car was immediately appreciated, especially since the market was not crowded with crossovers.
The new Kia immediately went on sale, which also explains its popularity - the Chicago Auto Show is still fresh in memory and the brilliant Korean novelty, which immediately appeared on the market, showed good sales levels.
Apparently, the success inspired the developers, since the first generation of KIA Sorento managed to survive two major restyling:
- 2006 - the power of the car was increased and the exterior was seriously updated;
- 2008 - completely changed the grille.
The last update came a year before the company introduced the second generation Kia Sorento. Perhaps the management decided in this way to stir up interest in the model and pave the way for the expected premiere.
The debut of the second generation Kia Sorento took place in Seoul in 2009. The car has really gone through dramatic changes:
- a load-bearing body appeared;
- there was a rejection of the frame structure;
- a new 197 liter diesel engine was installed;
- in the new version, the torque was 435 N.m.
In addition, the new Kia crossover has become much more spacious, which was facilitated by the increased overall dimensions, which was repeatedly noted by reviewers.
The second generation of Kia Sorento also received recognition, which confirms the significant number of cars of this brand on the roads around the world. But the Koreans were not going, and it seems they are not going to stop.
Four years later, the car survived restyling. So, in 2013, the crossover began to be produced with three options for upgraded engines, two of which ran on diesel fuel. Power has increased and fuel consumption has decreased. In general, the options looked like this:
- gasoline, 2.4 liters, with a capacity of 175 horses;
- diesel for two liters (150 hp) and 2.3 liters, the power of the latter was almost two hundred horses, namely 197 hp.
Such technical characteristics for an urban, in general, crossover were really impressive. In addition, the description of the restyled version of the Kia Sorento 2013 model year also included:
- new exterior and interior design (in particular, updated headlights, a radiator grille, chrome-plated plastic framing of some elements, an increase in air ducts and a bumper that has acquired reflective reflectors);
- improved car handling;
- the presence of 19 inch alloy wheels as an option;
- improving the comfort and safety of the cabin.
Remaining true to themselves, the manufacturers of KIA Sorento released the third generation of the car just a year later, after an impressive restyling in 2013.
In 2014, in Paris, during the motor show, Kia Sorrento was introduced, already belonging to the third generation of this model. For the whole world, the car was marked as Kia Sorrento UM, but in Russia it is presented as Kia Sorrento Prime.
Prime literally fascinated motorists. First, the abundance of trim levels. Among similar crossovers, the Kia Sorrento is distinguished by a large number of functions in the basic configuration. No other crossover can boast such a set. Interior photos, trunk volume and a large selection of body colors - all this allowed the car to become a truly popular crossover in many countries where Russia is no exception. In addition, the dimensions have also changed:
- length 4759.96 mm;
- height 1685 mm;
- width 1890 mm;
- ground clearance 185 mm;
- wheelbase 2780 mm.
However, the creators of Kia were not going to rest on their laurels. The next restyling took place literally a year or two after the Paris debut.
Kia Sorento 2015-2016 model year
The 2016 Kia Sorrento is a major step forward. The car has become much more spacious due to lengthening. In general, the dimensions of Sorrento 2016 look like this:
- the machine added 95 mm in length, totaling 4780 mm;
- height has not changed 1685 mm;
- the width remained unchanged - 1890 mm;
- wheelbase 2780 mm.
Even the photo shows that the new Kia model has become more aggressive and modern. Sorento Prime has also become more agile and stable. Although, and early models had good performance.
The 2016 Sorento Prime comes in five trim levels:
- L is the new model of the current year. Now it is she who is the base for the entire Sorento series. The package includes a lot of goodies, such as a six-speed automatic transmission, a high-quality six-speaker audio system that can be controlled by connecting an external device. Also included are wheels made of lightweight material, and the seats are trimmed with a pleasant to the touch fabric;
- LX is the second most popular equipment. It was previously considered basic, but the crisis is making its own adjustments. It has all the features of the previous version, plus a Kia Uvo touchscreen audio system, heated front seats, an ergonomic sunroof and front foglights. The proposed engine is a 3.3-liter V6 Lambda, the car can be all-wheel drive or front-wheel drive only;
- EX - in this configuration, leather seats are basic, which is already nice. The possibility of heating the seat, beautiful alloy wheels with black inserts, fog lights - all this is standard for this option. The EX Premium Package introduces the Infinity sound system, paired with the familiar Kia Uvo. And thanks to the presence of the third row of seats, the car is very roomy. As standard, the car is equipped with a two-liter turbocharged I4 engine. However, V6 Lambda also remains an available option. The power of 240 horses makes the Kia Sorrento EX a very unusual crossover;
- SX - today this equipment is the last before the highest level. It includes a smart key, Infinity sound system, heating, leather interior and everything else. The base engine is a V6, but you can choose from optional offerings. Included is an excellent navigation system plus a touch screen. Probably, in the future, this option will take the "top" set;
- Limited - the highest level of prestige, premium class, the highest possible basic package. Formerly called SX Limited. Includes an interior trimmed with Nappa - the best automotive leather in the world, the front seats are heated and ventilated, the rear ones are only heated. Luxurious hatch that allows you to enjoy the panorama of the surroundings. The engine can be chosen: turbocharged I4 or V6. Previously, this equipment was called Kia SX Limited and its fans should hurry up, because already in 2017 this name will become part of automotive history.
As you can see, even in the simplest trim levels, this crossover has something to surprise and please the buyer.

Among the innovations, it is worth noting how much the auto platform has improved. Add to this the appearance of an independent suspension - and we get a car that is a pleasure to drive. Indeed, the level of driving comfort has increased very noticeably.

- a two-liter turbocharged diesel engine with a capacity of 185 horses;

Of course, a car is not only technical characteristics, or dimensions, or fuel consumption. A real driver is aware that each car has a character, its positive and negative sides. As for the 2016 Kia Sorento, there are clearly more advantages than disadvantages, which are very relative.
Among the positives:
- Beautiful design;
- Large selection of trim levels and the richness of each of them;
- Increased interior space;
- The trunk, which opens in five seconds, if you just stand next to it holding the keys in your hand;
- A lot of the latest chips in the audio system.
In fact, the list of benefits can go on for quite some time. There are only two disadvantages:
- low ground clearance with good torque and a large number of horses;
- a serious jump in cost relative to the previous generation.
The exact cost of Kia Sorento 2016 has not yet been determined, but experts are already predicting a difference of half a million rubles, at least. Is the novelty worth that kind of money - that's the question visitors to auto forums ask.

In 2014, the third generation Sorento was shown at the Paris Motor Show. In Russia, the car is called Sorento Prime.
Models
In the United States, since 2016, the third generation Kia Sorento has been offered in five trim levels:
- L represents a new and basic model. For 2016, it offers an I4 2.4L Gdi engine with 190 hp. with a six-speed automatic transmission, front-wheel drive. Standard features include an A/MF/M radio with a single CD player and six speakers, as well as input jacks for an auxiliary audio device, as well as an iPod or other USB device, and can be controlled from the radio in the Sorento UM. - SX is the 4th in terms of level and is ahead of the "top" equipment. The trim offers a V6 engine as standard. A navigation system comes standard, as does HD Radio and an Infinity sound system. Push button with smart key is also standard.
- The Limited (previously known as the SX Limited) is the top trim. The trim offers the same I4 engine as standard and the V6 engine is optional on EX and SX models.
