Bmw 7 series e65 specifications. Car "BMW E65": description, specifications, features and reviews

BMW E65 7 Series the fourth generation of luxury sedans, which was introduced in 2001 at the Frankfurt Motor Show and launched in Europe on November 17, 2001.

This model became a replacement for and was produced until September 2008. The development of the car began in early 1996 and was completed in mid-2001, the appearance of the car was created by chief designer Chris Bangle.

In the fourth generation of the 7 series, for the first time, special body versions were designated with a separate code: the extended version - , the armored version had an internal number - and the hydrogen-powered version was designated as - .

Specifications

Engines and modifications

The V-engined 735i and 745i were first brought to market.

In March 2002, an extended version of the E66 (140 mm longer than the base version) was presented at the Geneva Motor Show - 735Li and 745Li with the same engines as the 735i and 745i.

Production started in September 2002 diesel version with 3.0 liter turbo diesel engine and with a V-shaped 3.9-liter turbo-diesel engine with a power of . A diesel version of the extended 740 model was not available.

In January 2003, the most powerful version was introduced - and with a 6.0-liter V-twin engine.

In the same year, an armored model was introduced in February, and production of the 730i started in March with the new Sport Package.

In October, cars began to be equipped with adaptive headlights, an IDrive system with two additional buttons, a Bluetooth connection with mobile phone, a screen with enhanced functionality and automatic climate control with a fogging sensor.

BMW in the back of the E65 / E66 saw the light in 2001 and were produced until 2008. The model impresses with the quality of the finish, the combination of dynamics and controllability and the progressiveness of the equipment. Only here to maintain a 15-year-old "premium" is not for everyone. Let's see what the owners are complaining about. And why do they still choose E65 / E66.

The prehistory of the model is simple: the well-deserved E38 has retired, and the Hippo has taken its place. So nicknamed for the sharply different design of the E65 by the townsfolk. The massive design was criticized and praised by buyers - in a couple of years the car overtook its predecessors in sales. Well, the list of equipment was amazing: the iDrive multimedia system, automatic handbrake, adaptive suspension, cornering headlights, push-button engine start, ZF's first 6-speed "automatic" and even before a bunch of options and chips like door closers or loading maps into the navigator from DVDs.

There is no need to even talk about comfort and convenience, as well as the quality of the finish of this "seven". Well, the Dynamic Drive system raised the car's handling to such a level that the BMW E65 became the best driver's F class sedan, beating both the 220th and the Audi S8.

The main complaints of the owners associated with glitches in electronics (and there are many of them) and, in particular, with the operation of the multimedia system. The bulk of the iDrive issues were resolved by the manufacturer in the first years of the model's release, but the complex design of the system requires not only constant updating, but also intervention in the filling.

With motors, the situation is this - at first, the E65 was equipped with reliable series of the legendary M54, M57 and good N62 units. But after restyling, they were replaced by new and not so reliable engines of the N52 and N62 families.

Box ZF series 6HP26 has collected several major shortcomings. We wrote about them in detail.

Body and interior

The body of the E65 is strong, well painted by the manufacturer. Many elements are made of aluminum. Owners do not note serious corrosion on this model - rather, it will be a sign of poor recovery after an accident. Deserved "age" corrosion should be looked for on rear arches and in places where plastic parts are attached to the bottom.

It is also important to choose E65 with original elements body kit for the bottom and thresholds - plastic parts are easily lost, expensive and directly related to comfortable sound insulation in the cabin.

The interior is filled with such high-quality materials that the "usaty" interiors will be a sign of a company car.

Electronics

What can be said about electronic system E65? Very difficult. Multiplex data buses, a lot of controllers and control units… Almost everything in the car is electronically controlled. Shock absorbers, active anti-roll bars, active steering- all this is looked after by a whole group of sensors and control units, which is also included in the iDrive kit. For owners, this is a potential problem.

The electrics themselves are of high quality, but the wiring on the motor shield, the power contacts and the generator loaded to the eyeballs become a frequent problem.

Software failures of numerous blocks directly make a hole in the budget of the owners, and not every specialist will undertake to troubleshoot. The pre-styling versions of the E65 are especially guilty of breakdowns.

The leader in the number of claims to electronics - of course, the control system active suspension dynamic drive. Often the hydraulic shock absorber of the trunk lid, starters and batteries fail. Owners also complain about a failure in the steering column, which is expressed in the failure of electrical adjustments.

Engines

  • The 730i / Li version was initially equipped with gasoline engines of the M54 family, after restyling in 2005 they were replaced by 3.0-liter N52 (231 and 258 hp, respectively).
  • Versions 735i / Li and 740i / Li received V-shaped in-line “eights” of the N62 family, with a power of 272 hp. and 306 hp Boosted to 333 and 367 "horses" depending on the version, the same "eight" N62 was installed on 745i / Li and 750i / Li.
  • The top gasoline engine, N73 with a volume of 6.0 liters and a power of 445 hp, received a modification of the 760i / Li.
  • Diesel versions of the "seven" with a volume of 3.0 liters, 730d / Ld, were equipped with the legendary M57TU, with a capacity of 218 to 231, depending on the year of manufacture.
  • Versions 740d and 745d received units of the M67 family, with a capacity of 258 and 329 hp. respectively.

In-line “sixes” of the M series, regardless of the type of fuel, are the most successful motors Bavarians in general. Gasoline M54s were installed on the BMW E65 until 2005, diesel M57s - until the end of the model's release. After restyling, the engines of the M54 family were replaced with new ones, from the N52 series, which became more of a disadvantage. The tendency of the latter to coke piston rings and other problems has reduced their resource. At the same time, the expected increase in power did not occur.

Gasoline V-shaped "eight" N62 set the entire period of production of the model, and all the time the owners complained about the coking of this engine, even with scrupulous service from a dealer with original consumables. But in general, the design of the motor allows you to get a good resource.

True, for this, the N62 will have to be seriously looked after: change good oil every 8-10 thousand km, do not save on consumables and reprogram the engine control unit to change the thermostat to a "colder" mode.

As for the V12 engines of the N73 series, they perfectly pull a heavy car, and their resource is clearly higher than that of other engines of the N family. But the complex design with vanos and direct injection significantly increases the cost of their maintenance.

A stone in the garden of diesel M57 can only be thrown at the part of fragile piezo injectors. But if you do not drive with an empty tank and refuel with normal fuel, these engines are traditionally considered the most successful in terms of traction and reliability.

The problem of the diesel V8 of the M67 series is perhaps the delicate fuel equipment and the EGR valve, which must be quickly repaired (changed) at the first sign of a malfunction.

Transmission

A mechanical box for this "seven" was not provided in principle.

The classic 6-speed automatic ZF 6HP26 cannot be called reliable. Wear of the torque converter blocking pads, bushings and mechatronics valve body - all these troubles await owners who do not comply with the oil change interval and love to drive. The box is repairable, but the costs cannot be called small.

Logically, the resource of the box is higher on versions with in-line gasoline "sixes" and lower - on V12. The owners go to some tricks to extend the life of the "machine". For example, they put additional radiators and change the gaskets of the automatic transmission plastic pan with each oil change.

Suspension and steering

The BMW E65 received a traditional solution for the Bavarian concern: McPherson front and multi-link suspension behind. The generally unpretentious design is characterized by high prices for original parts, especially for racks with EDC.

Suspension arms run an average of 30-70 thousand km without major repairs, depending on operating conditions. For owners of versions with Dynamic Drive, replacing the active stabilizer roll stability flies a penny and you have to pay dearly for pleasure.

The most expensive rear suspension- pneumatics, not the cylinders themselves, but pneumatic actuators and a control unit. Therefore, connoisseurs try to avoid versions with air suspension.

Steering with a Servotronic system is fraught with the unpredictability of the life of the rail - on some cars it starts knocking after 30 thousand km, but sometimes it goes beyond 300 thousand. It is difficult to sort it out, it needs to be replaced.

With careful operation, the resource of steering rods and tips can really be doubled and even tripled, compared with an average value of 30 thousand km.

Some owners are fond of high-speed maneuvers and wear out pretty quickly. brake pads, which is not surprising given the mass of the car and the possibilities of its dynamics. Deformed discs are common and are associated, among other things, with the passage of puddles.

Wheel bearings are quite reliable. Even in versions with V12 and in combination with low-profile tires, they run 30-40 thousand km.

Total

If you decide to buy a BMW E65 / 66, consider the cost of owning such a car. For supporting good condition this sedan will require investments, and considerable ones - and this is if you do not have to restore it after previous owners. A lot of nodes, a complex design with a bunch of sensors and expensive spare parts - all this will hurt your pocket. But the pleasure of driving such a "premium" is guaranteed to you.

To minimize the risks, choose options with in-line petrol "sixes" and a reliable diesel M57. But it is better to refrain from buying top versions with V8, V12.

Which was produced in 2001-2008, has never been so cheap. The cost of copies of the early years of release starts at $ 5,000! Is it worth it today to buy a used "seven", what branded "sores" it has and how much it costs to repair certain components and assemblies, the journalist found out the site.

It is clear that the E65/E66 for $5000 will be able to "take me to Gatovo", however, there are enough cars on the market up to $10,000. You can buy a pre-styling "seven" cheaper than a new "state employee". And the choice is more than sufficient - in our database of ads there are 120 "sevens" of this generation! But what will it face? new owner? Will the operation of such a car ruin him? To find out, we went to the service station "Stone Hill", where the master Artem works, who has been specializing in BMW for several years.

"In fact, not everything is so scary with the E65. As practice shows, the same E60s, about which, for some reason, usually cause more problems. The 7-series at least has no issues with positive wiring. But there are many other "sores" which are worth talking about, - the specialist begins his story. - In general, there is nothing wrong with this car if you buy a copy that is not "killed".

"Seven" of the zero years to this day impresses with the quality of finishes, crazy dynamics and handling. Even multimedia equipment is not so outdated against the background modern machines. Well, the once controversial design now looks just familiar. In 2001-2008 only about 350 thousand cars were produced, and 150 thousand were produced before the 2005 restyling. The early restyling of the model is mainly due to the desire to solve problems with the reliability of some components, therefore, if the budget allows, it is better to look at cars after 2005 onwards.

Operating experience

There were just two cars under repair at the service station: a pre-styling copy with a gasoline engine 4.4 2004. and restyled version of 2008 onwards. with diesel 3.0.

The first one was bought six months ago for $10,000 in very good condition. At the moment, the mileage is at least 240,000 km. During this time, excluding rubber, $ 2,000 was invested in the car. It would be possible to invest less, but the owner scrupulously monitors the state - changes everything. If you take the car "for restoration", then it will ask for much more money.

The second copy has been with the Belarusian owner for 6 years. Machine from Germany, on the odometer at the moment about 180,000 km. The owner of the soul does not like her - he says that, in addition to repairing the gearbox, replacing the rear air suspension pump, removing the particulate filter and dampers in the intake manifold, there were no special repairs. According to him, the main Maintenance- oil change, filters, once got over the suspension. What is most interesting, the car last years became cheaper to maintain: aluminum levers are now being restored, cheap windshields have appeared, spare parts have become more affordable. Keeping such a car, according to the owner, is absolutely not expensive. Only the repair of the gearbox was expensive - $ 1,700.

Body

The model has no problems with anti-corrosion resistance, frankly rusty "sixty-fifths" have not yet come across the eyes of the master, although the oldest specimens are almost 16 years old.

“A maximum of “tired” cars from Russia showed two or three “bugs” - and that’s it,” says Artem. “There will be no problems with rust if there was no accident and poor-quality body repair.”

The front part of the body is made of steel and is not fastened with rivets, as in the same E60, which is also good.

Wiper blades have an original mount and built-in washer nozzles, so ordinary "wipers" from gas stations will not work, and a set of new original ones costs 80 euros. Some save - they only change rubber bands, which cost a penny. Nevertheless, the brush frames still wear out, over time the windscreen begins to scratch windshield. But if earlier this glass cost a lot of money, today it is full of Chinese and Russian analogues. Also, do not forget to put the brushes in the service position if it becomes necessary to raise them, otherwise they will scratch the edge of the hood.

The plastic underneath is easily broken and lost. It costs a lot of money, but used parts appear on the "disassembly". So when buying, you should pay close attention to the presence of body kit elements of the bottom and thresholds.

But the biggest problem in our area is the theft of parking sensors and expensive photochromic mirrors. It is better not to leave the car just like that in the yard. Owner restyled BMW already stole everything in a circle.

"In total, there are 8 parking sensors on three bars, each costs $ 20, each bar costs from $ 15 to $ 20 apiece. During an act of vandalism, among other things, the wires are also damaged," the master comments.

And this is what we consider used parts! The owner of the dark blue car bought everything new - he paid $1,100 for the entire repair after the theft. Haven't painted the bumpers yet! In general, "flight" for two salaries that are not yet average in the country.

Even if the photochromic mirror is not stolen, it can easily leak like a gray car. On the secondary market"glass" costs $50-60.

The hydraulic drive of the trunk lid and its electronic control unit often fail.

Salon and electrics

Finishing materials are very durable. For example, a car with a mileage of 240,000 km does not have a hint of any wear. At the same time, if you do not forget to take care of your skin, then the period of occurrence of problems can be pushed back for many years.

Comfort and interior equipment to this day inspire respect. What does not happen here! Refrigerator, night vision camera, adaptive cruise control, seat massage and more, more, more…

Due to this amount of equipment, the car is very picky about the characteristics and quality of the battery. But an emergency can also happen.

"For example, very often they fail doorknobs machines equipped with Comfort Access. As a result, after closing the car, numerous electronic blocks do not "fall asleep". Bottom line - in the morning the owner discovers a car with a completely discharged battery. In Belarus, no one repairs pens, the cost of each is 250 euros," says Artem.

The electrical system of the car, to put it mildly, is not the easiest. Multiplexed data buses - with many controllers and control units, literally a controller in each door and seat ... All this can either simply fail completely, or "mope" a little, and it is not known what is easier to deal with. In general, the electrics are made with high quality, but there are too many of them.

“There are more blocks than the E60, but it cannot be said that the electrics are unreliable. Yes, there are various problems, but everything is being repaired. And there are no problems with power wires, like the “five”. The Logic 7 audio system has shown itself to be not the most reliable. that there are errors on the airbags. There were problems with the navigation units and the telephone. The electric "handbrake" is also one of the "sores", however, the problem is mainly related to the cables. The "glitches" of the door clamps are often disturbed, the steering wheel position sensor often breaks ", says the master.

With optics, too, there are some nuances: "Over time, the headlights begin to shine poorly on the road. The lenses lose their performance, the plastic becomes cloudy. There is nothing you can do about it - just replace the headlights."

Motors

The most common engines on our market are the petrol V8 N62 with a volume of 4.4 and 4.8 liters, as well as the diesel three-liter "six" M57.

"Most weakness petrol V8 - valve stem seals. Problems begin literally after the first 60-80 thousand kilometers, the cost of repairs is 400-600 dollars. The motor itself is "snotty" - it is difficult to find a car without oil fogging at various connections, especially valve covers flow. Vanos fail, sometimes solenoid valves. Rarely, but the valve lift control system can be a concern. Often there are problems with the generator, which is equipped with water cooling. Its repair is expensive. With runs there are problems with camshafts. In general, of course, these motors are far from millionaires, not even half a millionaires, but by modern standards they are quite reliable," the specialist says.

The 3-liter diesel M57 in various modifications is considered the most successful and reliable. power unit, which pleases with efficiency and excellent traction.

“It has the same problems as any diesel engine. In the event of a malfunction, the repair will not be the most budgetary. The nozzles fail, the turbine begins to “snot” and wear out. repair. The price of each is 250 euros. There are oil leaks, especially often the intercooler boost pipes flow. On pre-styling machines, swirl flaps in the intake manifold can fall into the engine and damage it. After restyling, they began to put aluminum flaps, but they can start to let oil through axes, in the end it gets to the glow plugs, the EGR control solenoid valve, the starter. In a dark blue car, the dampers recently leaked - the starter, which failed, was flooded with oil. The result is the repair of the starter and the removal of the vortex dampers," comments Artem .

Problems with the particulate filter on average occur at a mileage of 250,000 km. A new one costs 500 euros, so owners often remove it. If necessary, the engine control unit is reflashed.

Deleted particulate filter here without problems, but the car starts to smoke, and during acceleration it even spits out black clouds of smoke.

The vibration damper often fails. It costs about $300. The resource is about 150,000 km. Despite the presence of specific problems, with proper operation, the M57 can withstand more than one hundred thousand kilometers.

“Is it worth taking a V12? A lot of spark plugs, a lot of coils, the motor is very complicated - in case of malfunctions, they usually change the entire motor. In addition, fuel consumption is far from acceptable,” says the specialist.

Well proven 3-liter gasoline unit the M54 series of the pre-styling "seven", but there are few such options on our market. His only serious problem- valve of the crankcase ventilation system clogged with sludge. For preventive purposes, mechanics recommend updating it every second or third oil change.

Transmission

There is only one transmission - a 6-speed automatic transmission ZF 6HP26. On average, its resource before the first repair is 250,000 km. The main problems are the wear of the torque converter blocking pads, failures of the mechatronic valve body due to overheating and dirty oil. But the box has long been mastered in repair, so repairing it in which case is not a problem. The main thing is not to start the situation, but at the first sign of malfunctions, contact specialists.

“The most important thing is that periodic oil changes are required, although there is no official maintenance schedule. At the same time, in order to change the filter, you also need to change the plastic pan, which costs about $100,” Artem clarifies.

If you don’t change the oil with the filter and drive aggressively, then you won’t have to wait long for problems with the box. On a dark blue car, as we wrote above, the automatic transmission was being repaired, as the valve body failed.

Suspension and steering

BMW E65 has a quite acceptable resource of the main suspension elements. Front and rear - multi-link schemes with aluminum levers. There is a choice of replacement parts for original parts on the market, in addition, bushings and silent blocks are sold separately, so today the suspension can be repaired inexpensively. Just do not save to the fullest and buy parts for repairing levers from cheap and suspicious brands.

“Some E65s have shock absorbers with a change in the degree of rigidity. Their resource is quite high, but if they fail, the replacement will cost a pretty penny. A pair of shock absorbers costs over a thousand dollars. Therefore, people often put conventional shock absorbers instead of electrically controlled ones. dollars, that is, ten times cheaper," the master comments.

If you do not want unnecessary problems with the suspension, look towards versions without the Dynamic drive system. The hydraulic actuators of active stabilizers flow with enviable constancy: "Almost everyone has leaks, the cost of active stabilizers is very high, but in Minsk they have already learned how to restore them at one service station - repairs cost about $ 250."

The rear suspension can be equipped with pneumatics. It does not improve handling and comfort as much as it increases the cost of car maintenance. Height sensor may fail. ground clearance worth $60. On a restyled car, the owner had to change the air pump, as it stopped turning off. The cost of a used part was $150. According to the owner, it was possible to take it to repair, then it would be cheaper. Air bellows also break down, but they also learned how to repair them, the price is $ 50-70 per rack.

The brakes are not a problem, except that the 4-piston calipers may require a bulkhead. Also, sometimes people complain about the squeak of the pads. The average cost of a pair of brake discs is around $140, a set of front pads is about $60, while rear pads are around $40. Plus $5-10 for a pad wear sensor.

The steering rack on a car with a mileage of 150,000 km will certainly knock. You have to put up with this knock, it almost does not progress over time. It happens that the rail starts to flow, and even then the assembly needs to be replaced. The cost of a used steering rack on the bumper.by website is from $170 to $300.

Website verdict

What is the result? For little money we get a spacecraft. Powerful motors, perfect handling, a wide range of additional equipment, comfort, comfort and once again comfort ... But it’s better not to buy such a car with the last money. Too high a risk of any problems, the solution of which will require expensive repairs. For pleasure, as you know, you have to pay.

On the other hand, the car has recently become more accessible in content: specialized services have studied the design well, many components can now be repaired, and instead of uncontested original spare parts, a large number of substitutes have appeared. The market for used parts is also expanding.

In general, the car has become more accessible in every sense, but the phrase from the famous film comes to mind: "Vovka, you don't need such a car, brother."

Or is it needed? Dreams must come true someday.

BMW 7 e65 body was produced in the period 2001-2008. During these seven years, about 330,000 cars were produced.

Back in 1997, Chris Bangle organized a meeting with the best designers from DesignworksUSA, where he voiced his personal vision for a new car design, using vivid expressions such as “design leap” (a breakthrough in design) and “top product” (top product). As a result of the meeting, as many as 12 sketches for models were selected, of which only five were later left. At the end of the competition, three full-size plasticine models were prepared. The winner of the competition was the work of designer Adrian van Hooydonk.

Story

ATTENTION! Found a completely simple way to reduce fuel consumption! Don't believe? An auto mechanic with 15 years of experience also did not believe until he tried it. And now he saves 35,000 rubles a year on gasoline!

The presentation of the car was held in Munich at the FIZ research center (FIZ), 2 months before its official premiere at the 2001 motor show, which took place in the city of Frankfurt am Main. Although the popular Times magazine then named the model one of the 50 worst ever in world history, it turned out to be the best-selling BMW in the 7 series during its production period.

At the start of sales, as of November 2001, only models with 735i and 745i engines were available. However, already in April 2002, models appeared with an increased wheelbase up to 140 millimeters - model 735Li and model 745Li. And a couple of months later, the range of engines was supplemented by diesel units - 730d and 740d. Since the spring of 2003, two more engines have been developed - 730i and 760i.

The 65 BMW e65 body in the 7th series, in addition to technological innovations from the past, was also equipped with modern systems, among them it is important to note Valvetronic, this is a system that regulates the stroke of all intake valves. The use of this system has significantly reduced both fuel consumption and exhaust emissions; and noticeably raise dynamic characteristics machines.

All engines were equipped with six-speed ZF automatic gearboxes. Transfer control ( auto mode, neutral, reverse, parking,) in the box was carried out using a lever, which was located under the steering wheel. It was possible to change gears using the buttons on the steering wheel.

Body e65 bmw body 7 series fourth generation produced only equipped rear wheel drive. The basic equipment of the car included a passive suspension (on the front McPherson "MacPherson" struts; rear - multi-link), for an additional fee it was possible to install systems: Dynamic Drive (these are active stabilizers for lateral stability and both suspensions and reducing the roll of the car) and the EDC system ( designed to adjust the stiffness of all shock absorbers, the adjustment had two modes: comfortable and sporty). In addition, it was possible to apply the back air suspension, which maintained a constant ground clearance regardless of the load on the rear axle.

Several smart systems helped the driver in driving the car at once:

  • DSC (inherited as a legacy from the BMW 7th series of the third generation. The system slows down the rotation of some wheels, thereby increasing stability on slippery surfaces) is controlled by the ASC subsystem, it reduces the fuel supply, slows down the rotation of the slipping wheel.
  • DTC is a system that allows limited slip for the drive wheels.

A unique innovation was the iDrive system, which is able to replace numerous control details for all service devices. It is a computer that is controlled by a single controller, the controller is located on the central panel. With it, you can navigate inside the system menu, the menu is divided into eight groups:

  • telephone
  • BMW Assist
  • onboard information
  • help
  • navigation
  • settings
  • entertainment
  • climate

In the interior trim of the car, black cherry or ash was used. The front passenger seats were electrically powered. Extra comfort seats were also available for an extra charge (they had several additional adjustments: lumbar support, knee support, shoulder support, back width, and headrest height) or sports seats (with additional adjustments for the knee support and headrest height). In addition to all this, the front and rear seats could be equipped with heating, ventilation and massage. For sheathing, several types of leather and velor were offered.

The safety of the passengers in the car in the event of an accident was ensured by six airbags at once (two frontal airbags for the driver and his front passenger, in addition to them, rear side and front airbags for second-row passengers). It was possible to install additional head airbags, front and rear.

The parking brake is activated by pressing the button on dashboard. This brake was able to stop the car in the event of a malfunction. main system braking.

Machine features:

  • If the parking mode is on, then the electronic assistant notifies you with a sound, and also shows the distance to the obstacle on the monitor
  • The car is equipped with locks for open doors, thanks to them, opened door can be fixed in any position you need
  • The luggage compartment lid is equipped with an electric drive, which ensures its opening. When, when opening the lid, it comes across an obstacle, then its lifting stops
  • An electronic key that is used in the ignition stores information about the car (for example, VIN, aggregate status and mileage). If you forgot the key inside the cabin or trunk of the car, the car simply will not close.
  • When you press the unlock button, the outer door handles will light up.

Restyling 2005-2008

In 2005 bmw 65 bmw body survived restyling. The innovations were of a complex nature and touched external design car, and its technical component.

The car has redesigned (changed) the design of the headlights, grille and bumper. The rear edge of the hood was raised by 20 millimeters. As for the rear of the body, the trunk lid has also changed, there are additional rear lights. The brake lights were made adaptive (the brightness of the signals depends directly on the intensity of braking), the rear wheel track was expanded by 14 millimeters.

The main innovation of the interior can be safely called a redesigned iDrive system. It changed the shape of the control controller and added the "menu" key, pressing this key opens the main page of the control menu. The cut of the seats has changed, the dashboard controls have received an elegant chrome trim. A super modern multimedia system, unlike the previous versions, allows you to watch even digital television (the so-called DVB-T), and not just standard channels and DVDs. D interior trim changed from black cherry to American walnut.

The engine range, with the exception of the 760i, has also been upgraded. For example, Motors 735i and 745i gave way to 740i and 750i respectively, and diesel engine 745d has been replaced by 740d. In 2005, in September, the first elongated model equipped with a diesel engine appeared - 730Ld.

How to pay additional options appeared:

  • "Adaptive" turning lights
  • Three-spoke sports steering wheel

Famous modifications and versions

BMW 7-series of the fourth generation was produced in the following modifications:

  • E65 - was the most common modification, which had a shortened wheelbase
  • And the E66, on the contrary, had a wheelbase increased by 140 millimeters. Equipped rear seats with increased comfort, and a refrigerator was built in the niche between the seats
  • E67 - the development was equipped with factory armor, in addition, the car had a B7 security level, according to the highest protection standards. It was equipped with an automatic fire extinguishing system, sensors that detect a gas attack, a system for supplying fresh air to the passenger compartment, an oxygen cylinder for being underwater, a built-in radio beacon and other means of protection. It was possible to start the engine from a distance of 150 meters in order to protect the owner from undermining the car by terrorists by installing explosives in it. Car tires manufactured using RunFlat technology, they allow you to race 50 kilometers at a speed of at least 80 km / h when all wheels are broken. The armored bottom under the front seats was able to withstand the explosion of hand grenades.
  • E68 - produced only for individual orders, the car ran on hydrogen and gasoline.

BMW Individual modification offered additional options interior trim and body paint.

A modified sports Alpina with a short base BMW 750i was produced on an assembly line in the city of Dingolfing, in the same place as production model. For the United States, a limited edition of Alpina B7 cars was released, only 800 pieces, the models quickly sold out.

$10,000 can buy different cars. For example, a completely new one from the salon, but poorly equipped, with a weak engine and not very good driving performance. Or a well-equipped, dynamic, but second-hand - say, a luxury Bavarian sedan with an 8-cylinder 367-horsepower gasoline engine and rich feature set.

I already hear exclamations from you that such things cannot be compared. It's like apples and bricks, and operating a high-powered premium brand sedan is ruinous. Yes, it's possible, but not necessary. It all depends on what kind of car you buy and what history it has. If you're interested in a luxury sedan with a "big" gas engine, you probably don't fall into the category of "I want the cheapest you have" and "If you take the floor mats and spare tire, will you give me a discount?"

A premium sedan with an 8-cylinder engine is something special. There will be no such cars in the near future. But before you dare to "break the piggy bank", find out what awaits you.

BMW introduced its next "seven" series E65 (E66 - an extended version with the prefix L) in 2001. body design and bmw interior 7 immediately caused an uproar. The perennially conservative model has taken on a very bold shape thanks to Chris Bangle. It took too long for everyone to get used to them. It is said that some customers have abandoned BMW in favor of Mercedes and Audi. After restyling in 2005, the "limousine" began to look much softer, but the characteristic proportions remained. In terms of comfort and practicality, there were not so many criticisms. Inside the car is huge, especially in the extended version, and it rides very well.

Often, the plastic glazing of the headlights is covered with a fine mesh of scratches.

Equipment

Interested in sedans premium segment expect a luxurious "dowry", but, as practice shows, this does not always happen. For example, in copies from Europe, sometimes the equipment is so meager (within the class) that there is not even seat heating. Things like a night vision system, an adaptive chassis or luxurious seats with ventilation and massage are not standard and are found in top versions e.g. BMW 760Li. But in the case of luxury used cars, the less electronics, the less potential problems in the future.

However, automatic climate control, power seats, cruise control and trip computer are on the list. standard equipment basic set.

The interior design of the BMW 7 takes some time to adapt. Various functions are controlled via the first generation iDrive system. She is very annoying with incredibly slow reactions and lack of logic in control.

However, in general, the ergonomics are not bad and you can get used to it. The driver's seat has a wide range of different adjustments, allowing you to choose the optimal position behind the wheel.

Scuffs on the side bolsters of the chair are not surprising.

On the run

The huge sedan is as easy to drive as any other car. Perhaps, they are only embarrassed by the great efforts on the steering wheel, which are unusual for sedans. But you will be surprised by excellent reactions at high speeds.

This does not mean that the BMW e65 behaves like a sports car. Despite the good balance, the body in sharp turns, in the absence of active stabilizers, heels strongly, and rear wheels lose reliable traction, especially in winter conditions. Also, there is a lot of understeer going in and a lot of oversteer coming out, especially if it's a little rough. BMW 7 is not suitable for dynamic driving. He feels best on high-speed highways with smooth bends in the roadway.

Door locks require regular maintenance - lubrication.

The eight-cylinder 4.8-liter engine has more than enough power for fast overtaking. The driver has 367 hp at his disposal. at 6300 rpm and 490 Nm of torque at 3400 rpm. N62B48 associated with rear wheels through a 6-speed automatic transmission. The increase in thrust occurs linearly, without diesel throws.

Outside, the engine sounds stronger than inside. Unlike modern premium cars, this "seven" does not hide the increase in speed. And this is a fact. Let aerodynamic noise not penetrate into the cabin, but the rumble is clearly audible big wheels with rain tires.

Speaking of wheels, it must be admitted that it is better to install tires with a maximum profile. Serial runflats are more practical to replace with regular ones - with soft sides. Runflat BMW 7 owners report more frequent air leaks as well as nasty road shaking as the heavy tires don't filter bumps well.

Suspension, though dense, but comfortable. It guarantees the classic compromise between comfort and agility for which bmw cars since the last millennium. However, carefully check the condition of the suspension. The "sevens" wear out the components of the front axle quite quickly. It is also necessary to check the state of the automatic rear height control system.

It is better to look at cars without complex active Dynamic Drive stabilizers. The advantage of a conventional suspension is inexpensive parts that do not differ much in price from similar components. Volkswagen Passat or Opel Insignia. Some of them are even cheaper.

It's true that most consumable parts, such as brakes, are inexpensive, but the price tag for service makes you grab your heart. Especially if you ask for help official dealer stamps.

BMW 7 series E65 and E66 is a car that requires qualified service. Advantage: relatively simple engines and good accessibility to all vital components. The classic rear-wheel drive concept reduces the risk of costly repairs cardan shaft, from which all modern BMWs with the xDrive system suffer. The rear differential is virtually immortal, because the car is practically not included in the “drift”. And to limit the intervention of the non-disableable stabilization system, you need to get through the complex iDrive menu. Believe me, few will want to do this, except perhaps the most desperate.

Engines

One of the common engines is the 5-liter N62B48. The engine is basically reliable, but loves fresh and quality oil. Even if you do not plan to drive several tens of thousands of kilometers a year, but only 8-10 thousand kilometers or less, be sure to change the oil at least once a year. Only the variable valve timing system can cause trouble, but diagnostics and an experienced mechanic will tell you about problems with it. They will also help you deal with on-board computer and reset all error messages.

The engine requires inspection for oil leakage from under the block head and valve covers. Most often, the N62B44, installed in the BMW 745i before restyling, was noticed “behind this”. In the BMW 750i after the update, this problem is less common. New engine, unlike the 4.4-liter unit, is equipped with an additional oil cooler, which helps to maintain the temperature of the lubricant in the normal range. But it is around it that leaks can occur, especially if it has not been replaced after a small “poke” in the front bumper.

The 3-liter gasoline unit of the M54 series has proven itself well. It has an electronic throttle, an aluminum block with cast iron liners and variable valve timing on both camshafts. The only serious problem is the valve of the crankcase ventilation system clogging with sludge. For preventive purposes, mechanics recommend updating it every 2-3rd oil change. The successor to the N52 series garnered far fewer positive reviews.

An inline six-cylinder 3-liter turbodiesel was intended for the 730d version. The mechanical part of the engine is very reliable, and the operating costs are relatively reasonable. Real consumption fuel fits into 9 liters.

The 740d and 745d 8-cylinder turbodiesels require higher operating costs and service maintenance than gasoline "eights".

During the inspection, pay attention to the condition drive belt water pump, generator and air conditioner. Also check if the radiator fan turns on and if the radiator is leaking.

The motor chain is reliable. The noise of a still cold engine is an acceptable phenomenon, but after warming up the engine it should disappear. If this does not happen, then the chain tensioner may be faulty. Extraneous noise can also come from faulty plastic flaps in the intake manifold.

Transmission

The biggest stumbling block in the BMW 7 is the ZF automatic transmission. They say that BMW literally burns it. But in fact, the reason lies in the maintenance of the box. The manufacturer claims that the working volume of the oil is sufficient for "lifetime" use. You can probably imagine what will remain there after 200,000 km traveled in one oil - solid "scrap metal". Some mechanics recommend changing the lubricant every six years or 100,000 km. For your peace of mind, it is better to carry out this procedure immediately after purchase. Thanks to this, the machine will last much longer, but you must understand that it is not immortal. Some BMWs had problems with the box, never reaching the milestone of 100,000 km. And this is a bad sign!

During a BMW 7 test drive, pay attention to how it shifts one or two gears down. Some gearboxes do not want to downshift, while others change gears with jerks. You may even hear a metallic thud, as if someone has driven into you from behind. When shifting up, there should also be no rough jolts. However, slight twitches when shifting down in manual mode are quite acceptable.

Chassis

BMW 7 is very sensitive to the condition of the chassis. Therefore, regular wheel balancing and geometry adjustments are necessary. Also pay attention to brake wear, as many do not worry about the condition of these elements before selling. The prices for these components are not exorbitant, and any service can handle the replacement.

Suspension components are simple and durable, but not limitless. Active Dynamic Drive stabilizers are quite expensive. If you get a car without them, then you will worry less in the future.

Typical problems and malfunctions

BMW 7 German engineers literally riddled with electronics. Problems appear when vital systems stop functioning. According to statistics, the share of electricians in the general list of faults is 35%. The most capricious was the iDrive system, which in the first cars (before restyling) often hung up, especially at temperatures below zero.

Indicator lights are a nightmare for BMW owners. The system reported a malfunction of the parking sensors.

To a lesser extent, there are problems with the radio and CD changer. Sometimes the audio cable is damaged. When inspecting the car, turn on the radio, and in the settings menu, change the balance - forward-backward, left-right. So you will understand whether all the speakers are playing.

Also, sometimes the trunk does not want to open, and the automatic headlight range control system fails. Attention must be paid to the correct functioning of the electronic parking brake and central locking.

Sometimes the air conditioner makes you nervous. Sometimes there is simply not enough cold air, in other cases it refuses to redistribute the flows.

Do not forget to check the operation of all comfort systems, including air conditioning and seats, before buying. Pay attention to the ventilation holes. Air guides often break - not controlled.

Conclusion

There is no need to worry too much about the fate of the BMW 7 if you have carefully checked it. Such cars are bought, first of all, for the soul. Therefore, as a rule, motorists are mentally prepared for expensive breakdowns and have a small amount of money in reserve - just in case. But the amount must be significant. Indeed, for the repair of the box alone, you can be asked for almost $ 3,000. It is necessary to put up with a high fuel consumption - 12-14 l / 100 km. Do not think that you can save money on the operation of such a car. Most likely, the maximum you can do is change the oil and filters. Remember, BMW 7 loves an attentive and generous owner.

The main thing!

  • 1. Rely on the purity of history and transparency of service.
  • 2. Have your car checked by an experienced mechanic.
  • 3. Thoroughly test the vehicle during a test drive.
  • 4. automatic box gears should work smoothly, without jerks.
  • 5. Pay attention to the absence of pulls, the balance of the suspension and wheels.
  • 6. Check if the electrical equipment is functioning properly.
