"Sid", who debuted at the beginning of the year, is "the new Korean" in every sense. It was developed specifically for Europe - the design was carried out by the Frankfurt studio "Kia", headed by the former stylist of "Volkswagen" and "Audi" Peter Schreyer. They produce a car in Europe - at a specially built plant in Slovak Zilina. Finally, they will sell exclusively in Europe. And most importantly, introducing "Sid", the Koreans promised that he would be the first car from the Land of morning freshness, consumer qualities which will not fade against the background of modern Japanese and European competitors. Strong statement, isn't it? And it's hard to believe in him. In order to check whether such an upstart needs to be matched with an appropriate car, so as not to disgrace the honor of the old lady of Europe. We chose the Opel-Astra, popular from Lisbon to Yekaterinburg.

We chose and made no mistake. After all, even outwardly they are twins - perhaps not twins. If you put "Sid" and "Astra" side by side, take aback - they have more similarities than differences! From swollen wheel arches and headlight patterns to drop roof and reverse slope rear pillar body "Kia" literally tries to imitate the "Opel" in everything, while not copying it.

However, the collective appearance of "Sid" - in its interior and exterior features of half a dozen modern European and Japanese models - in any case turned out to be, if not trendy, then at least fresh. Praise for the Korean model is quite weighty. It's also great that the Astra, despite its considerable age (after all, the car is 4 years old), still looks good. And not only outside.

It's another matter

At one time, we admired the interior of the Astra, reasonably considering it to be equal to the Golf. Pleasant to the touch plastic, perfectly readable and sometimes pretty instrument panel, good visibility, plenty of pockets and a very voluminous glove box. But if it is difficult to make claims to the quality of the finish and the versatility of the Opel interior, then the ergonomics are not up to par. The main complaint is the climate control unit. An intricate algorithm of work, small buttons located at the same bottom turn the simplest operations into a risky undertaking. To change the direction of the air flows, you have to overcome two levels of the electronic menu! Try to do it at a speed of at least 60 km / h in a dense Moscow stream ...

But imagine - in everything that concerns the interior, the Korean upstart Opel is at least not inferior. It sounds almost unbelievable to anyone who knows firsthand the gray, boring, booming interiors of Korean cars. But what is there to complain about here? The "Sid" has soft, pleasant to the touch plastic dashboard and door upholstery, a steering wheel adjustable in two directions and simply huge rear-view mirrors. In addition, in "Kia" we found such pleasant signs of true modern car like USB and iPod support. Really useful little things, which for some reason are forgotten not only in Opel, but also in Ford, Volkswagen, Toyota. And the Koreans remember - well done! Most importantly, no questions to "Sid" about ergonomics. The “climate” menu will be mastered by the child, he will also deal with the “music”. A very tiny glove box and, perhaps, too poisonous orange dashboard lighting can hardly be attributed to serious shortcomings. Well, how can you not exclaim: “Bravo, Kia!”

And this is just the beginning!

Good Korean interior and spaciousness. Even against the background of "Astra" - one of the most spacious models of the "golf" class. The headroom for those sitting behind both is at an equally good level - 95 cm from the sofa cushion to the ceiling. But at the feet of the “Sid” it is more spacious by a good 3 cm. We also note that the sofa itself is wider, and the margin in the shoulders is more impressive, and the central tunnel is not so massive. Finally, the opening tailgate"Kia" is not as narrow as that german car.

Astra won back with a much more comfortable front seat. If the Sid's seat is flat and hard - it clearly lacks lateral and lumbar support, then the Astra chair is a real song. With well-thought-out side and lumbar supports, royal generosity of adjustments, including both the angle of inclination and the height of the pillow. “Kia” has not yet matured to such a level of care for the driver.

Only for extra charge

But those were flowers. And here are the berries: in the dispute of trunks, "Sid" not only does not concede, he puts "Astra" on both shoulder blades! In fairness, we must admit: the trunk of the Opel is perhaps among the most stupid in the class. Everything is not thank God for him - a very narrowed opening, a modest width and depth of the cargo compartment and an unfoldable sofa cushion. For some reason, the Astra's fully folding sofa with a split back is classified as additional equipment.

It is clear that against such a background, even the Sid's trunk, which, we note, is not the most roomy in the class, looks good. It surpasses the Astra in everything - both in terms of ease of loading and in size. I would especially like to note the sofa that folds to the floor level - there will be no problems with transporting TVs and wardrobes. Even in the basic package.

In Russia, "Astra" can be bought with "mechanics", and with a robotic "Easytronic", and with an "automatic". However, the automatic transmission is only for a 1.8-liter engine with a capacity of 140 hp. from. This engine, remarkable in its characteristics, is equally good both on the “handle” and with automatic transmission. Therefore, by the way, we chose just such an Astra for comparative tests.

Even in the simplest Drive mode, she is talented in every way. By default, the "automatic" is soft, without jerks and switches up quite early, saving fuel - it's the most for a leisurely and calm ride. But as soon as the gas pedal is imbedded, the car becomes temperamental and eager to overtake. And if you press the button to turn on the "active mode" ... This is the very case when the inscription "Sport" is really justified. It seems as if the engine received an injection of adrenaline - the car reacts instantly to gas and keeps the transmission up to the limiter zone. In fact, you go a little faster, but the impression is that you ride on a racing kart!

A good match for the 1.8-liter Astra would be the 2-liter Sid, which has 143 hp hidden under the hood. from. But this Kia is too expensive. That's why we chose less powerful but more affordable option with a 1.6 liter engine. Fortunately, it gives out a solid 122 hp. from. and is combined with AKP. Moreover, on paper, such a car is almost as good as the Opel. Here are just subjective impressions suggest otherwise.

Quadruple "automatic" "Sid" noticeably blunts - to move actively and be the first to leave the traffic light, you need to press the trigger to the fullest. Get used to the roar of the engine, but do not expect vivid impressions - even in this mode, acceleration is quite smooth. If, however, to tie up with inter-lane chess and drive calmly, then the Kia will bring more positive emotions. On the "Drive" he calmly reaches 160 km / h, and gives the maximum speed for 3rd gear. By the way, for risky overtaking it is also better to use this mode, since you just need to swing the selector to the right.

About the brakes - only good. Reliable deceleration, comfortable drive and competent ABS work distinguish both contestants.

In pursuit of the best

"Astra" is generally not considered a trendsetter in terms of handling. To the level of "Focus" and "Golf" she was not allowed to reach a relatively simple semi-independent rear suspension. But it’s impossible to exclude Opel from the number of gambling cars. You will be pleased with both a very informative steering wheel and a perky chassis. Moreover, with a custom-made active chassis IDS + "Astra" becomes really angry, tough and almost sporty. But the standard version is remarkably good on the high-speed straight, where there is no doubt about stability and reliability, even when the speedometer needle falls on the mark of two hundred. Yes and in sharp turns lateral rolls and whistling rubber are in no hurry to spoil your driving pleasure.

What about Kia? Can a Korean hatchback please an active driver? In any case, "Sid" does not disappoint. This car is perhaps the best among its compatriots in terms of handling. Yes, perhaps the setting of the electric power steering will seem to someone less refined than in the Astra. But the car steers better than, say, the Renault Megan, not to mention the “Korean” classmates. A very competently tuned suspension will not mind if you suddenly want to go through a targeted turn quickly. But only faster, not recklessly fast. It is a pity that, due to an incomprehensible whim of a Russian importer, ESP disappeared even from the list of custom equipment. The dynamic stabilization system has never harmed anyone.

Silence!

Even in the recent past, all Korean models of the “golf” class were distinguished by too loud motors. "Sid" has done away with this vicious practice. At least at idle, his “four” purrs even quieter than in the “Astra”. And in general, it becomes annoyingly noisy only beyond the mark of 5000 rpm - with sharp overtaking and acceleration. But at a cruising pace of 120–140 km / h, the Sid is surprisingly quiet and calm.

It is a pity that against the background of such a quiet engine, the tires turned out to be too noisy. The wheel arch insulation leaves a lot to be desired. And the Kia suspension is by no means a model of comfort. It is not only tough enough, but also “vociferous” - it works out the unevenness of the coating roughly, with unpleasant blows to the body. Finally, Sid is also very sensitive to the quality of the coating - on the abrasive asphalt in the cabin, an unpleasant itch and a slight vibration on the steering wheel appear.

"Astra" is much less picky about the quality of the road. And given the reckless nature of handling, the smoothness of the Opel can only be praised. Let's say the engine really makes noise only when the "automatic" is on duty in the "Sport" position.
