Looks better than it really is

Salon "Grants" looks more modern and interesting - there is a noticeable difference in development and a change in trends in the global automotive industry. Round air deflectors, a shelf in front of the front passenger seat hint at borrowing from the French school of interior design. Unfortunately, the finishing materials are mostly hard plastics, which after a relatively short period of time begin to make unpleasant sounds. The Priory torpedo has soft components, and it looks stricter. Some elitism is added by oval clocks and gray plastic inserts “under aluminum”.

Places in front and rear of related competitors are almost the same. On the second row, the three of us will sit a little cramped, but moving short distances can be tolerated. But the landing is noticeably different. The heiress of the “tens” will appeal to those who like to be closer to the road: it has a low landing, like cars from the late 90s. But Lada Granta is a representative of the new school, built on the principle of "I sit high - I look far away." Of course, this simplifies the disembarkation / landing of the driver, and improves visibility in all directions from the driver's workplace.

No matter how surprising, but the volume of the luggage compartment in the stowed position of the smaller "Grants" is as much as 50 liters more - 480 and 430 liters, respectively. By folding the backs of the back row, this figure can be increased, but a flat loading area will not work. Interestingly, the backrests in the 60/40 ratio are not folded on all cars - this was the prerogative of only expensive versions.

Gasoline is everything

Grants are offered four gasoline engines volume of 1.6 liters with a capacity of 82 to 106 liters. With. If we analyzed the models separately, then the latter, of course, could have several strengths. It is enough to remember that the Lada Priora is ergonomic. It is worth mentioning separately ground clearance. At first glance, the cars are almost equal, because the difference is only 5 mm in favor of Priora. Lada Granta is made in a more modern style, but her appearance is frankly boring. It is noticeable that the designers set out to create a kind of "universal" model. In front, it stands out with large headlights, a radiator grill and an air intake, which, in fact, occupy the entire front. A large hood and round foglights complete the composition.

On the side, there are similar body overhangs, as well as plastic lining on the doors, painted black. Yes and side windows no less than the Priora. At the back, a huge trunk lid with a pair of “claw-like” stampings catches the eye. And the fact that the license plate is installed in rear bumper, only enhances the impression.

Lada Priora boasts a pair of engines, while its counterpart has 3 engines. In many ways, these power units are similar - they have an atmospheric design, an injector, an in-line layout of 4 cylinders and a transverse arrangement in the engine compartment.

For Priora and Grants, the list opens with an 8-valve petrol engine with a volume of 1.6 liters. Power is frankly small and amounts to 87 hp. with., which are achieved at around 5,100 revolutions. However, a good torque helps out, which is not only equal to 140 Nm, but is already available at 3,800 rpm. The consumption of the models is identical and quite acceptable - 9.0 / 7.0 / 5.8 liters. With such characteristics, Priora accelerates to hundreds in quite decent 12.5 seconds, giving out a maximum of 176 km / h. The maximum speed Grants is noticeably less (167 km / h), but the dynamics are slightly better - 12.2 sec.

There is another common motor. They have already become a 16-valve engine, also with a volume of 1.6 liters. Its power is noticeably greater and reaches 106 horses at 5,800 rpm, but the thrust has increased slightly, stopping at 148 "newtons" at 4,200 rpm. Fuel consumption is almost the same. For Priora, it is 8.9 / 6.8 / 5.6, while for Grants it is 8.6 / 6.7 / 5.6. Regarding the dynamics, the Priora exchanges a hundred in 11.5 seconds, reaching a maximum speed of 183 km / h. Grants results - 10.9 sec. and 183 km/h. However, this is true for versions with manual transmission5. With AMT5, Granta's performance is worse - 12.3 sec. and 180 km / h, supplemented by an appetite of 9.0 / 6.6 / 5.2 liters.

But the round remains with Grant, as she has another unit in the gas station - a 1.6-liter, 98-horsepower 16-valve. He has a recoil peak at 5,600 rpm, and a maximum torque of 145 Nm is achievable at 4,000 rpm. However, due to aggregation exclusively with AT4, the results are average - 13.3 sec. up to a hundred, a maximum speed of 173 km / h and an appetite of 9.9 / 7.6 / 6.1 liters.

Gearboxes

Here is a complete victory for Grants. After all, Priora can only offer a 5-speed “mechanics”, which the opponent also has. In general, the box is not bad. However, while driving, many note discomfort - the lever vibrates, the gears do not always turn on clearly, to the point that their gear knob has to be literally driven into the groove. Yes, and departures of speeds, sometimes, happen.

Nevertheless, besides the “handle”, LADA Granta also has a classic 4-range from JATCO (model JF414E) for a 98-horsepower engine, as well as a 5-speed robot type AMT 2182 of domestic production. Of course, with such transmissions, the dynamics are slightly worse, and the consumption is higher, however, these gearboxes are quite at the level of competitors sold at about the same price, and most importantly, they make it possible to forget about constant switching, which is more than relevant in megacities.

Chassis

The chassis layout of the models is the same. This is a standard, as for such a segment, semi-dependent scheme, with a torsion beam on the rear axle and MacPherson struts on the front. discs in front and drums in the back. Of course, the suspension of both models cannot be called driver's, but its energy intensity is at its best, which, coupled with good ground clearance (like some crossovers), makes both cars ideal for country (and not only) roads.

Interior

Of course, interior design is a subjective matter, but the majority speaks in favor of Priora. After the restyling, the interior of the sedan has noticeably freshened up. It is made in a classic style, with a touch of sportiness.

A sweeping 3-spoke steering wheel rises in front of the driver, behind which is visible an elegant dashboard with convenient scales recessed into small wells. On the rectangular center console, all the option buttons are concentrated, although they are frankly low, especially the temperature and air flow dials. However, this is a consequence of the large display and air deflectors, which took up almost half of the entire space. The entire dashboard is made of plain dark plastic.

The seats are not bad, but they clearly lack lateral support, which is why sharp turns driving is not easy. Visibility is on par, although wide A-pillars limit the sector. There is enough space in the back, and the trunk is not the smallest.

Grant is a little different. Dashboard it is perfectly readable, but it looks much simpler, and the center console rounded at the bottom is not so elegant, and round air deflectors are placed on top of the dashboard, like rocket nozzles. On the other hand, the ergonomics on it are better thought out and the lower controls are not blocked by the gearshift lever, as in the Priore. There is a spacious niche above the glove box. The steering wheel is almost the same as that of the Priora, and the black finishing plastic too.

With visibility, things are about the same as with the seats. The back is quite comfortable, but Grants' trunk is much larger - by 90 liters.

Equipment

The configurations of the models are approximately the same. The only difference is that in the basic Standard, Grants have only one airbag, EBD, ABS and BAS systems, DRL, and audio preparation. Priora, in the Standard version, additionally has an eyeglass case, an on-board computer, an armrest, an electric power steering and handles painted in the color of the body. Moreover, the price is almost the same - the Grant costs 383,900 rubles, and Priora is given for 389,000 rubles. Such equipment as that of Priora (slightly better) in the Grant can only be obtained in the Norma / Classic version, which costs 419,600 rubles.

As the cost increases, technical indicators increase, and the equipment becomes richer - air conditioning, heated seats, heated and electrically adjustable mirrors, an armrest in the rear sofa and other options appear.

In the top, the price for Priora reaches 491,000 rubles, while for Grants it is 541,400 rubles. However, the difference of 50,000 rubles, taking into account approximately the same technical data, is quite justified, since LADA Granta has a multimedia complex with a 7-inch TouchScreen display, Bluetooth, parking sensors, an airbag for a passenger, light and rain sensors, which is completely inaccessible to a competitor and other options.

As you can see, the choice between Lada Priora and Lada Granta is not so simple, but not too complicated either. Given the almost identical characteristics of the engines (except for the 98-horsepower), the only question remains the transmission, since fans of automatic machines will have to choose only Grant. Its price is slightly higher, however, given the presence of an automatic transmission, a robot and more generous equipment, the difference is quite justified.

Despite the permanent increase in the share of foreign cars, the positions of the domestic auto industry remain unshakable. Which is understandable: even middle class knows how to count money, and in the face of constant inflation, a car that was considered inexpensive five years ago is now becoming unaffordable. But it would be a mistake to believe that it is not influenced by evolution: it is becoming more comfortable and safe, reliable and of high quality, competing with many budget foreign cars, especially those made in China. So it is not surprising that the subjects of our review are two popular models: Priora, the last copy of which rolled off the assembly line in 2018, and Grant, which is still being produced, but already with the prefix “bye”.

Technical features of the models

To participate in the review, we took cars latest generation with the same 1.6-liter 87-horsepower engines and manual transmission.

As you can see, Priora is larger and heavier: the weight of Priora and Grants differs by 30 kg, and the length by 8 centimeters. But Grants have more ground clearance, and it is more economical. In all other respects, the sedans are about equal.

Exterior

Lada Granta debuted in 2011 and it was front wheel drive sedan. Initially, the car was designed to replace rear-wheel drive versions, in particular, the line of “nines”. Later, a five-door liftback was added to the sedan, which was different from the front basic model slightly (only bumper). Behind, for obvious reasons, the cars turned out to be a little similar. In general, the appearance of the Grants, especially after the last restyling, has become youthful, reminiscent of the typical "dutiki" of the 90s. The bumper, front head optics, running lights have been improved.

The start of sales of Priora dates back to 2007, and the model itself was designed to replace the "top ten", the demand for which fell every year. In 2013, the car underwent a facelift, during which running lights were added and sound insulation improved. The exterior design itself has not changed much and is now perceived as obsolete.

So, in terms of appearance, the question of which is better, Grant or Prior, is not worth it: the first model looks definitely more modern and aesthetic. A wider choice of body types speaks in favor of the Priora: in addition to the sedan, a station wagon and two modifications of the hatchback, three- and five-door, are available.

Salon and trunk

Since Grant was designed later, her interior is just as modern as her exterior. The designers tried to take into account all the fashion trends in the global automotive industry. The round shape of the deflectors attracts attention, the presence of a shelf in front of the front passenger seat is the influence of the French school of auto design. True, the quality of the plastic leaves much to be desired - it is hard, and over time begins to emit unpleasant squeaks. However, there are also soft inserts on the dashboard, and on the dashboard there are even decor elements for aluminum. Oval-shaped watches also look good.

Priora's dashboard has also become much younger, but it is felt that here, too, ergonomics are clearly lacking. As for spaciousness, relatives have approximately the same capacity both front and rear. There is a slight lack of width at the back, three people will be clearly uncomfortable here, especially during long trips. The landing of the heiress of the “tens” is much lower - an echo of the nineties. will appeal to those who like to sit high, and this is obviously the majority. And it's not so much about better visibility: getting in and out here is much easier than at the low Priora. Grants have 90 liters more luggage space, which may come as a surprise, because the dimensions of this sedan are smaller than those of a competitor.

Unlike the Priora, the back of the rear sofa is lowered for Grants, but not for all configurations, and it will not work to get a flat loading platform.

Engines and transmissions

On both cars, an almost identical eight- or sixteen-valve 1.6-liter engine is installed, which they inherited from Kalina. But the degree of forcing they have is different. Priora has 98/106 liters. with., in the younger brother, less powerful ones, 82- and 87-horsepower, were added to these two power units. But even on the same engines, purely subjectively, the Grant seems to be more torquey - perhaps due to the presence of a lightweight connecting rod and piston group. In any case, these motors are less noisy, vibrate noticeably less and consume less fuel. As the latter, only AI-95 is used.

As for the transmission, Granta's leadership here also looks obvious - her cable box looks much more preferable. Essentially, this is a modernized manual transmission from the VAZ-2108, which works much more clearly, although it is considered noisier.

Considering all of the above, the answer to the question of whose power unit is better, Priors or Grants, will be unequivocal, but this advantage cannot be called decisive.

Dynamics, fuel consumption

Equipped with an 87-horsepower engine, it consumes the same amount of gasoline as its colleague in the review, equipped with the same power plant:

  • City - 9.0 liters per 100 kilometers;
  • Highway - 5.8 liters;
  • Mixed mode - 7.0 liters.

But due to the different weight, the acceleration dynamics is different: Priore takes 12.5 seconds to reach a speed of 100 km / h at a “maximum speed” of 176 km / h, Grant accelerates faster (12.2 seconds), but goes “quieter” ( its limit is 167 km/h).

106-horsepower 1.6-liter sixteen-valve is another common engine, but here all indicators are different, except for top speed(183 km/h). In Lada Priora, the consumption in the city, highway and in mixed mode is 8.9 / 5.6 / 6.8 liters per 100 kilometers (acceleration to “hundreds - 11.5 seconds), for Lada Granta - 8.6 / 5, 6 / 6.7 (10.9 seconds) for the manual, and 9.9 / 6.1 / 7.6 (13.3 seconds) for the four-speed automatic.

So, according to these indicators, the comparison of Grants and Priors did not reveal a clear winner: the heir to the “tens” is faster with one power unit, and loses with another.

Manageability and safety

It is difficult to call it as comfortable as modern foreign cars, but in terms of handling, Priora is quite good. With an increased steering rack travel, the car confidently holds the road even at speeds exceeding 120 km / h. Yes, and it is easier to maneuver here due to the increased number of revolutions of the steering wheel (4.1). Granta loses in comparison with a competitor - the car rolls more when cornering, because there are fewer revolutions (3.1), and any unevenness can cause a departure from the original trajectory. At the same time, her suspension is softer - this is enough comfortable car regardless of body type.

As for the indicator of reliability and safety, both cars are equipped with an airbag for the driver and ABS / EBD / BAS systems - this is, so to speak, the minimum European standard for basic configurations. In addition, there is a burglar alarm and central locking with remote control.

Options and prices

Options for both cars do not differ much. The basic version has daytime running lights, one PB each, the already mentioned EBD / ABS / BAS systems, audio preparation and tinted windows. At Priora, you can add an on-board computer, electric power steering, armrest, eyeglass case to this list. The cost of the Standard configuration is approximately the same - they ask for 460 thousand rubles for the Priora, and 430 thousand for the Grant. Why the base Priora is more expensive than Grants is unknown to science, but with an increase in equipment, the picture changes, becoming more predictable.

The Priory's Norma equipment costs 470 thousand, while the level of equipment corresponds to the initial level of Grants. The top version of Image can be purchased for 530 thousand, while the competitor has a relatively expensive Luxe Prestige worth 610 thousand. Here you can enjoy air conditioning, a modern seven-inch touchscreen multimedia display, a passenger airbag, parking sensors, light / rain sensors - options that Lada Priora does not have.

What to choose: Grant or Priora

Summarizing the above, it is difficult to give preference to any one model. Moreover, there are modifications with different bodies - sedans, liftbacks, station wagons, hatches, sports versions. So it would be interesting to compare and reviews of real owners.

But here, too, opinions differ. Many argue that the Grant is more reliable and better than the Priora, that this car has minor malfunctions that make it necessary to contact a car service, occur later and less often. Moreover, in most cases, these are such defects that allow you to move on your own, and not resort to the help of a tow truck (malfunctions of the heater, power window mechanism, generator, etc.). smaller, the appearance is much more modern and attractive. The only negative characteristic of all models is the whistle of the brakes, but sooner or later you get used to this and stop paying attention.

Another advantage of the heir to the “tens” is more spacious salon especially in terms of passenger legroom. Landing is also much more convenient, the trunk is almost 90 liters more. Add to this richer equipment, and the picture emerges more or less slender.

But many people like the Priora, and it is quite reliable. Moreover, according to statistics, the owners of this car visit a car service less often. Perhaps the point here is greater maintainability - many repair Priora in garage conditions, fortunately there are no problems with spare parts, and their cost is an order of magnitude lower than that of foreign cars. The only thing that upsets even supporters of a car with an old-fashioned design is the too high cost. But since the production of the model has been discontinued since last year, price comparisons are not entirely correct.

So - Grant or Prior - it's up to you to determine. If you are only interested in a new car, the choice is unambiguous, but information has repeatedly slipped on the network that they also plan to curtail the production of Lada Granta, especially against the backdrop of increasing problems with suppliers. It is not known when this will happen, so we would advise you not to put off the purchase indefinitely. And inflation is not conducive to maintaining the purchasing power of the population at the same level ...
