Better than the Volkswagen Polo Sedan. Hyundai Solaris or Volkswagen Polo - which sedan is better? What's under the hood

Bestselling Polo became not just like that - it is a well-thought-out car that ideally meets the aspirations of its target audience. Strengths he has significantly more than the weak. And here are the main advantages of the car.

Adaptation to Russia

Volkswagen has paid a lot of attention to adapting the Polo to harsh operating conditions. A high-capacity battery and a more powerful starter are installed here. The manufacturer claims that the engine starts without problems at temperatures down to minus 36 ° C. The washer fluid reservoir holds as much as 5.5 liters. By the way, when this Volkswagen debuted, its ground clearance was 150 mm. The Russians actively complained that this was not enough. The Germans reacted constructively to criticism - they increased ground clearance up to 163 mm, which made the car much more adapted to our realities.

Handling and comfort

The vast majority of drivers with Polo instantly develop a complete understanding - a very understandable, flexible character of the car. Adjusted steering effort and precise responses add confidence in running corners, and successful suspension settings endow the car with stability, stability and comfort - most road bumps go unnoticed by the crew. During the last restyling, the Germans improved sound insulation. Now the rumble from the road and sandblasting are much less annoying than before. Against the general favorable background, only the roar of the engine stands out, but it does not come to discomfort.

Ergonomics and equipment

Behind the wheel - a typical Volkswagen situation. Simple and concise forms that will remain relevant for many years to come. Build quality is decent. Nowhere does not backlash and does not hang out. Ergonomics is completely standard - such a comfortable fit and a verified arrangement of controls in this segment is still to be found. The level of equipment is pleasantly surprising. And if the climate control, radio, rear view camera, electric heating windshield and windshield washer nozzles do not seem out of the ordinary, then the presence of App Connect support, as well as fog lights with the cornering light function on a budget car look like real chic.

Wealth of choice

Potential buyers will have to rack their brains when choosing "their" car. No wonder, because Polo is offered in 17 different versions! The basic aspirated 1.6 (90 hp) is combined exclusively with a 5-speed manual, while its boosted version to 110 “horses” can also be obtained with a 6-speed automatic. In addition, Polo is available with an advanced 1.4-liter 125-horsepower turbo engine, which is available with both 6-speed manual and 7-speed DSG transmission. In the initial version of the Conceptline, only the 90-horsepower Polo is offered, and in the sporty GT, only 125-horsepower.

Price

The base Polo is estimated at 599,900 rubles. For a modern foreign car, this is a very interesting proposal. With a 110-horsepower engine, the price starts at 709,900 rubles (the equipment will be richer in this case), and the Germans ask for a turbo version from 769,900 rubles. By the way, you will have to throw 45,000 rubles for the machine, while the surcharge for the DSG will already be 70,000 rubles. As you can see, the prices are quite reasonable. And enduring popularity Polo the best confirmation of this.

But this Folks has one shortcoming, which becomes more and more serious every month.

Heir on the way

The life cycle of modern models is six to seven years. Against this background, the four-door Polo stands out, and not for the better. Still, because he is now 9 years old! By present times this is a veteran car. Although it consumer qualities are at a high level, and technically it is not particularly outdated, there is one factor that can discourage you from buying a Polo. It's about a successor. The sedan under the name Virtus was shown last fall in Brazil, and in the foreseeable future it will appear with us (most likely, it will be renamed Polo). So, buying the current model, you need to know that very soon it will be discontinued. Accordingly, with the release new car your Volks will inevitably fall in price.

The next topic regarding which car is better will not surprise anyone. It would seem that everything has already been discussed and considered so many times, but such discussions do not subside. The same applies to Kia comparisons Rio with a Volkswagen Polo sedan. Of course, there can be no consensus that one of the sedans is better, but it’s still worth considering such a dilemma and comparing these models.

Prestige

Here, of course, Volkswagen Polo ahead of your opponent. It's no secret that german models are listed above Korean ones, which is facilitated by their legendary quality. On the other hand, it cannot be said that the KIA Rio has such a poor pedigree or chronic design problems. In addition, when buying a sedan in such price category comparison with respect to prestige is not decisive, although it does have some weight.

Exterior

KIA Rio

It all depends solely on taste, so the concept of "better" in this case is inappropriate. The Rio sedan is made in flowing lines, it is sharpened, swift and modern. The front end is decorated with an impressive grille, on the sides of which there are headlights that climb far onto the front fenders. The KIA bumper is distinguished by the “mouth” of the air intake and L-shaped foglights.

The forward-leaning profile of the Rio sedan, as it were, continues the image of swiftness, indicated even in the front end. The roof littered back, stampings on the doors and fenders, decorative elements, feet climbing sideways and spectacular rims are striking. The stern of the Rio is not so defiant, everything is done in a calm style - the correct lines of the trunk lid, the bumper protruding slightly back, etc. In general, the design of the Kia Rio reflects the modern trends picked up by the Korean company.

Volkswagen Polo

Not so with the Polo. Here the pedantic German school affects. Volkswagen attracts attention with clear and balanced proportions. It has a classic front end with a small grille and correct form optics. A good half of the bumper of this sedan is occupied by an impressive air intake, on the sides of which there are round fog lights. And above all this hangs the sloping hood of the Polo.

In profile, the Polo sedan looks more solid - it does not have that bold forward tilt and artsy stampings. All lines of the Volkswagen are straight, the gaps between the parts are thin, the roof is also a little littered back, but to a lesser extent than that of the KIA. Wheel disks Polo is simple, with 7 spokes. The stern is made in the same spirit - calmly and stylishly. The appearance of the Volkswagen Polo is much less defiant. It is for her that this sedan is preferred by mature people, while young people choose the eccentric and sporty Rio.

Engines

Basic

In this regard, Volkswagen frankly loses. Common to these sedans is the presence of simple and uncomplicated powertrains. They all have atmospheric design, injection system injection, 4 cylinders and 16 valves each. Each model offers 2 motors.

The Rio comes first with a 1.4-liter engine with a capacity of 107 hp. With. This is a good indicator for such a segment, even despite the fact that Kia's peak power can only be reached at the very top - as much as 6,300 rpm. The torque of the Rio sedan is also good - 135 Newtons at 5,000 rpm.

Such an engine is designed for AI-92 and Euro-4 standards. Dynamic characteristics such a KIA is not impressive - 11.5 seconds to accelerate to a hundred, and the maximum speed that Rio sedan- 190 km / h. At the same time, the consumption fits into 7.6 liters in the city.

Contrast this Volkswagen engine Polo can, only a much weaker, 85-horsepower engine. And this is despite the advantage in the working volume - 1.6 liters versus 1.4 for Kia. As an asset, he can put the lower located peak of achieving maximum return - 5,200 revolutions. But the Polo's torque is higher and available earlier - 145 Nm at 3,750 rpm. In dynamics, the German 85-horsepower engine loses a little to Rio - 11.9 seconds, as well as in top speed, which is 179 km / h. Volkswagen's consumption is 1 liter more, which is the result of a larger volume - 8.7 liters in urban mode.

Top

Here the advantage is also on the side of KIA Rio. Such a sedan is able to offer the buyer a 1.6-liter engine with a return of 123 hp. with., albeit at 6,300 rpm. At the same time, thrust remains at the level of 155 Nm of torque at 4,200 rpm. Like power unit KIA is much more dynamic than its predecessor, because it accelerates the sedan to a hundred in just 10.3 seconds. however, its maximum speed did not increase, remaining at around 190 km / h.

Consumption at Rio increased by 1 liter, reaching 8.5 liters. The second Polo engine is also inferior to its counterpart, like the first. This time the power of the 1.6-liter German motor reached 105 liters. with., approaching the return of the base at Kia. As before, his peak power was reached at 5,250 rpm, which is somewhat less than that of the Korean. But in terms of traction, the engines of competitors are almost equal - 153 Nm at 3,800 rpm.

The dynamics of Volkswagen is almost as good as that of the Korean sedan - 10.5 seconds. up to a hundred with the same (8.7 liters) appetite.

Therefore, if with respect to basic power units, the advantage of Kia over Polo is immediately visible and in almost all respects (except for torque), then in the case of top-end engines it is rather illusory.

Since the significantly lower power of the Volkswagen engine does not give Rio a gain either in dynamics or in traction. so in this aspect KIA can be recognized as better, but without an overwhelming advantage.

checkpoint

Basic

In this aspect, Rio is again in the lead, although the gap is small. The choice of gearboxes for the models is almost identical. Kia with a 1.4-liter engine is equipped with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-band automatic transmission. The boxes themselves are not bad - the “mechanics” work without failures, the lever switches simply and naturally, and its moves are quite short.

But the "automatic" of the Korean sedan leaves not so rosy impressions - when switching, jerks and jerks are observed, and its "thoughtfulness" sometimes annoys drivers, especially when the "kick-down" mode is activated on the highway. However, for those who are accustomed to a measured and calm ride, this is not a big problem.

Volkswagen, on the other hand, did not complete the Polo with an automatic transmission base engine, offering customers only a 5-speed MT. The German "mechanics" of the Polo are in no way inferior to those of the KIA - smooth switching, short-stroke and other advantages. As for the automatic transmission, the engineers most likely considered it inappropriate for the 85-horsepower Polo to have an “automatic”.

Top

Volkswagen has added new transmission- to the same 5-speed MT Polo, engineers added a 6-band "automatic". Of course, the temperamental drivers of the Polo will be annoyed by her calm disposition, especially with only 105 horses under the hood, but the Volkswagen Polo is a non-racing model.

Kia Rio in this case again pleases with diversity. Suffice it to say that for the 123-horsepower Rio engine, the Koreans picked up both a new "mechanics" and a new "automatic". Both of them are 6-speed and are focused primarily on efficiency. The automatic transmission managed to get rid of many problems and shortcomings, and Rio's MT does not cause problems. However, some are unsure that this is better, because 6 gears are simply not needed for a 123-horsepower Rio engine and a 105-horsepower Polo engine.

And this is nothing more than a simple PR stunt from Kia and Volkswagen. As a result, all gears come out too short to be able to confidently spin the engine. The only downside to both automatic boxes both Volkswagen Polo and Kia Rio are tuned for efficiency, which is why they constantly strive to “tuck” the gear higher, as a result, keeping the engine at the lower limit of speed, with which it is far from always ready to spin up quickly. It is also worth noting that both automakers preferred the installation of a simple torque converter, abandoning the now fashionable CVTs and preselective transmissions.

Chassis

The chassis layout of Rio and Polo is identical. This is an independent type front suspension equipped with McPherson struts. At the back, both companies installed a torsion beam without equipping a fully independent undercarriage even top modifications of their sedans. But there are also differences. They concern primarily the brakes. If the Kia Rio has disc mechanisms in a circle, then the Polo has them installed only on the front axle, and even the top modification is not equipped with rear disc brakes. And Rio has this kit from the basic version.

Of course, such brakes are enough for the Polo, but in this respect the KIA is still better. The models also differ in terms of steering. If in Rio the designers preferred a hydraulic booster, as more familiar and traditional, then the Germans at Polo settled on an electric version. Be that as it may, but if we compare, then both mechanisms show themselves perfectly - the control is sensitive and verified.

Interior

In this case, as with appearance, the lines of thought of the designers of Volkswagen and Kia are diametrically opposed.

KIA Rio

Rio has a youthful interior, immediately charging with enthusiasm and setting up for an active ride. What is the dashboard alone worth, with its huge speedometer that took up most of the space in it, analog indicators and spectacular wells in which the instruments are enclosed. Rio's 3-spoke steering wheel is very comfortable, making it easy to steer the car. Elongated air vents quickly create a cozy atmosphere in the car. The ergonomics are thought out very well - all the Rio control keys are located in their places, you don’t need to reach for them through the entire cabin.

The center console, divided into 2 blocks (multimedia and climate), looks great, and allows you to use the options without being distracted. The Rio dashboard itself is made without sharp breaks, with harmonious transitions and lines, although the material is not of the highest quality. The KIA seats are comfortable - they provide lateral support and do not let you get tired on a long journey. In addition, the mass of adjustments allows you to comfortably accommodate the driver of almost any height. The good visibility that Kia boasts is also important - it is somewhat limited only by the wide front pillars. In general, Rio has an excellent interior - bright, memorable, but without flashy elements, comfortable and thoughtful.

Volkswagen Polo

Here everything is different, and in no way worse, but simply different. It is not in vain that there is an opinion about the interior of the Volkswagen, which is so adjusted that only a lamp and a secretary are missing. Inside the Polo, everything is thought out with German pedantry - the ergonomics are simply impeccable, and in such a way that you can click on the keys without opening your eyes. The Polo's dashboard is crisp and clear, with large speedometer and tachometer dials separated by an on-board computer screen.

The steering wheel is very comfortable, and made of pleasant to the touch material. The Polo air vents are almost rectangular in shape, with slightly rounded outlines, not inferior to those of the Rio. The Polo center console, which houses the multimedia screen and keys, and below them is a block air conditioner, strikes with its order - each button in its place.

Torpedo Polo is made of plain plastic, which is surprisingly harmoniously diluted with chrome inserts. Volkswagen seats are tight in German, but from the point of view of convenience they are beyond doubt. If we compare visibility, then it is slightly better than that of Rio, since the A-pillars are not as wide here.

That's really what is better: Volkswagen Polo or Kia Rio? Which state employee is the most "cheap and angry"? Here's what to take, so as not to regret later? We will try to answer these and other questions in this review-comparison.

In order for our comparison to be as objective as possible, in the review we will mention both the old Kia Rio 2015-2016 and new model 2017. Polo is sold almost unchanged, if I'm not mistaken, since 2010. There is talk that a new generation is coming this year. According to some, the Volkswagen Polo 2018 will “break” all competitors. Well, let's wait and see. In the meantime, it will be possible to compare only what we currently have on the market.

Body

Dimensions

The dimensions of the cars are almost identical.

The length of the Rio of the previous generation is 4 m 36.6 cm, the new one is 4 m 40 cm. The Polo sedan is 4 m 38.4 cm long. I consider the difference in plus or minus 1.5-2 cm to be insignificant. Since such a difference is quite likely due to the shape of the bumpers, it does not affect anything.

Width of old Kia Rio 1 m 72 cm, new - 1 m 74 cm. By the way, we noticed that in size new Rio 2017 increased a little? The width of the Volkswagen Polo remains at 1m 69.9cm for the time being.

The height of the Korean state employee is 1 m 45.5 cm for the old version and 1 m 47 cm for the new one. And the height of the German is 1 m 46.7 cm.

The wheelbase of the Kia Rio 2017 also became larger - 2 m 60 cm versus 2 m 57 cm for the old version. The 2017 Volkswagen Polo base is 2 m 55.3 cm. In this case (the old “German” and the new “Korean”) the difference is almost 5 cm. Already something.

The ground clearance of the German sedan is declared larger than that of the Korean one - by several millimeters. But upon closer inspection, everything turns out to be the same: about 16 cm. For our roads, it is quite normal.

The mass of cars is also approximately equal. After a slight restyling in 2015, the Polo sedan weighs 1163-1208 kg. The mass of the old Rio is 1110-1198 kg, and the new one is 1150-1259 kg. Here you can download more german car- this is evidenced by both passport data and tests of autobloggers. The Korean sedan starts to “sag” earlier.

Appearance

We turn to the assessment of appearance. I think (and probably most readers will agree with me) that the exterior design for a budget car is one of the main parameters by which the buyer decides in favor of a particular model.

Personally, I design the third Kia generation I like Rio. It looks quite harmonious and, therefore, attractive. What else does a small car need? By the way, I like the sedan more, although I prefer hatchbacks.

The fourth generation of the miracle of the Korean auto industry looks, in principle, also nothing. I especially like her food, in particular, the rear lights connected by a horizontal strip. But the front optics are somehow not very good. Well, here, as they say, "the taste and color ...".

The appearance of the Volkswagen Polo has not changed for at least 7 years. The facelift of 2015 doesn't count. in fact, only LED daylights were added running lights in headlights. Personally, until one video blogger drew attention to this, I didn’t even know that this change is so imperceptible to an ignorant person.

In principle, that of the "Korean", that of the "German" appearance quite nothing. Nothing bothers my sense of aesthetics (except for the shape of the headlights of the new Kia Rio). Therefore, we can say that the exterior design was a success. At this stage, I would bet on the five and the old Rio and Polo. If you evaluate the new generation of Rio, then, probably, I will give him 5 with a minus.

Interior

Design

About interior design budget cars can be judged, to be honest, only by the design of the instrument panel and center console. The front seats and rear sofa traditionally do not differ in special frills.

Polo Sedan

Salon VW Polo 2017 (actually, as in copies of the previous seven years) immediately declares its conservatism. There is a German restraint of lines and forms. Everything is simple and tasteful. If you do not look at the instrument panel.

The instrument panel is made in such a laconic style that I do not like it. I am not an opponent of conservatism, on the contrary, I often support it. But the instrument panel Polo Sedan looks overpriced. Some kind of baby mobile. Not seriously.

I give four.

Old Rio

The front panel of the old Rio looks somehow fresh. It feels like the design was drawn by younger people. I won’t say that I especially like it, but there is clearly a zest here.

Most of all I like the instrument panel here (unlike the German opponent). Young, with a hint of sportiness. I approve.

Part of the center console with the multimedia system seems unfinished. Somehow I don't want to look at her. The eye is definitely not happy.

I also give it a four.

New Rio

The most interesting salon in new Kia Rio 2017 model year. Well, you will agree: it's just interesting to be here. There is no German boring stuff and, at the same time, everything is in its place. The eye rejoices.

The most "tasty" part, I think - the center console. Both the multimedia part and the climate control unit look very nice.

The instrument panel is made restrained, almost like a Volz. But, in principle, it will do. A little more interesting than his.

I put five with a minus.

Material quality

Thought the quality of the materials would be different. But no, everything looks and feels almost the same in all compared cars: the plastic is “wooden” and hard, the seat upholstery is simple even in the highest trim levels.

Judging by the reviews of car owners, in the previous generation of Kia Rio, materials grew old faster. What is meant? For example, the surface of what the hand takes: steering wheel, handles, gearshift lever - wore out faster, the texture disappeared, became smooth. Silver handles became black in places - because. it's black plastic has been painted with silver paint.

The Rio's seat fillers are also of lesser quality than the Polo's. It is noticed that in the same time they are more quickly missed.

How the Kia Rio 2018 will perform remains to be seen in a few years. Perhaps the situation with the materials has been corrected. At least partially.

Volkswagen Polo Sedan does not suffer from this. At least not a word about it in the reviews. Most likely affects the good old German approach to business.

At this point, five to the “German” and three to the “Korean”.

Ergonomics

Let's go over the main points: the instrument panel, steering wheel, front seats, rear sofa.

Dashboard

Devices are well read at all compared cars. In this regard, it is difficult to find fault with something. None of the instrument panels are overloaded with information. To understand what speed, it is enough to throw a fleeting glance at the panel, there is no need to peer for a long time. Five for everyone.

Steering wheel

The grip of the steering wheel, according to the drivers, is comfortable. Nothing interferes. The number of buttons is acceptable. The most important thing, in my opinion, is that the horn is located in the center of the steering wheel. It's intuitive - no need to look for a button to "beep". Again all five.

Front seats

Here, each model has its own characteristics. According to the reviews of the video bloggers who conducted the test drive, most note the fact that the lateral support of the front seats in the 2016 Volkswagen Polo is better than in the Kia Rio.

In addition, the seats themselves seem to be a little stiffer, plus there is lumbar support. In other words, the front seats in the Polo are more anatomical than in the Rio.

The new Kia Rio has short front seats. As a result, half of the thighs of long-legged riders hang in the air. In principle, problems arise not only in tall people. On long trips, due to this circumstance, the legs become numb in most.

Both the previous and the new generation Rio have problems with the driver's legroom. Sometimes you want to relax your legs, spreading your knees to the sides. So, Polo Sedan 2016 allows you to do this, but Kia Rio does not. There is little space on the right, the knee rests on the center console.

It is clear that the perception of ergonomics and convenience is a purely subjective thing. Therefore, in order to understand exactly what to choose for you, you need to drive each of the cars several times. But judging by the problems described above, I think it is possible to give an assessment quite objectively. The Polo definitely gets five, the old Rio gets four, and the new three.

Rear sofa

The rear sofas of budget cars have never been comfortable. Nevertheless, in the Volkswagen Polo they are more comfortable due to the same lumbar support and a stronger angle of inclination.

In the old Rio, the landing is more vertical, which is not very comfortable.

In the new Kia Rio, the situation has been slightly corrected with the angle of the backrest, but due to the sloping roof, the head of a tall passenger will rest against the ceiling.

Legroom for rear passengers is more in the German sedan. But a common disadvantage is the lack of an armrest in the rear sofa. For me personally, this is strange. Why not make an armrest with cup holders, because only two people will fit in the back anyway? Because of this omission, I can only give a maximum of four. The conservative "German" gets it. The old “Korean” gets a three, and the young one gets a three plus.

Trunk

The trunks are almost the same. The Korean sedan has more. The third generation Rio boasts 500 liters, the fourth - 480 liters. The Polo has even less - 460 liters.

But the German sedan has the largest opening. Therefore, larger things will fit into it. In addition, the hinges of the trunk lid in it, when closed, occupy a smaller amount of usable space.

The trunks of all the cars presented in this comparison can be expanded due to the folding rear sofa. In the "German" the seat rises up (as in hatchbacks) and the back reclines. In both Rios, the seat does not rise, the back reclines directly on the seat. Before restyling in 2015, the back of the Polo's rear sofa was one-piece, but now it is separate - it can be lowered in parts. In the "Korean" the back always folded separately.

Explicit "cant" with the trunk only in the new Kia Rio. The essence of the problem is that the car has keyless entry, and the developers seem to have decided, as we call it, just “pond”. The idea is that the trunk will open automatically after the key is near for at least 3 seconds. As a result, this system does not work properly. Either it opens or it doesn't. And there is no opening handle on the outside! You have to either throw the bags on the ground and reach into your pocket for the key, press the button, or, again, throw the bags where you were, go to the driver's door, open it and pull the lever responsible for opening the trunk (as in the old fashioned way). In general, as a result of the “scientific poke method”, you get used to the fact that the trunk opens only from the passenger compartment. Well, or not to take two hands - one must be free to get the key.

because of own shortcomings the trunk of the old Rio gets 4 points, and the trunk of the new Rio, because of two jambs, gets a three. Polo's trunk gets an A.

Engines and transmissions

Polo Sedan

For Volkswagen Polo, 2 engines are available:

  • 1.4 turbo 125 hp and 200 Nm at 1400-4000 rpm,
  • 1.6 for 90 and 110 hp and 155 Nm at 3800-4000 rpm.

Turbocharged 1.4 TSI is aggregated by two types of transmissions: 6-speed manual or 7-speed automatic. For the 90-horsepower 1.6-liter power unit, only "mechanics" is available, and for the 110-horsepower - both "mechanics" and "automatic".

According to the passport, Volkswagen Polo 1.6 with 90 hp accelerates to 100 km / h in 11.2 seconds; 110-strong version on manual transmission accelerates to "hundreds" in 10.4 seconds, and on automatic transmission - in 11.7 seconds. Polo 1.4 turbo spends only 9 seconds to accelerate to 100 km / h.

Fuel consumption for all types of Polo engines is almost the same (values for automatic transmission in brackets):

  • 1.4 TSI - 7.5 (7.3) liters. in the city and 4.7 (4.8) l. along the track,
  • 1.6 / 90 HP - 7.7 liters. in the city and 4.5 liters. in the country,
  • 1.6 / 110 HP - 7.8 (7.9) l. in the urban cycle and 4.6 (4.7) l. in the suburban cycle.

Judging by technical specifications, the most preferred in terms of dynamics is turbocharged engine volume of 1.4 liters. Firstly, it has more power, and secondly, it is more high-torque, moreover, the maximum torque is available already from 1400 rpm and stretches up to 4000 rpm. Very good shelf.

For 3 engine options we put 3 points.

Old Rio

For the 3rd generation Kia Rio, 2 engines were available:

  • 1.4 for 107 hp and 135 Nm at 5000 rpm,
  • 1.6 for 123 hp and 155 Nm at 4200 rpm.

The engines were paired with a 6-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission.

According to passport data, acceleration to 100 km / h in a car with a 1.4 liter engine. on the "mechanics" takes 11.5 seconds, on the "machine" - 13.5 seconds. For a sedan with a 1.6 engine, these are 10.3 and 11.2 seconds, respectively.

Fuel consumption according to the passport (values for automatic transmission in brackets):

  • 1.4 - 7.5 (8.5) l. in the city and 5 (5.2) l. in the country,
  • 1.6 - 8 (8.6) l. in the urban cycle and 5 (5.3) l. along the track.

Motor 1.4 is definitely weak for a car weighing well over a ton (especially if it is fully loaded). But 1.6 is more powerful than Volkswagen, the torque is the same. The difference in power, of course, is not great, but for those who like to ride at high speeds, the difference will play a positive role.

For 2 engines in the range we put 2 points.

New Rio

For the new Rio, they prepared a brand new 1.4, but 1.6 left the old one. Apparently, they did not see the point in inventing something new. Probably, in terms of its technical characteristics, it is quite normal for its time. The most interesting thing is that his torque has changed a little: now it is not 155, but 151 Nm at 6300 rpm. As you can see, its thrust was reconfigured in the direction of high revs.

The new 1.4-liter engine produces 100 hp. (previously it was 107). Torque is also reduced. Now it is 132 Nm at 4000 rpm. What guided Kia - I still do not understand.

The new 1.4 engine accelerates the Kia Rio to 100 km / h in 12.2 seconds. on manual transmission and in 12.9 sec. on automatic transmission. Old redesigned 1.6, respectively - in 10.3 and 11.2 seconds.

Fuel consumption according to the passport is as follows (values for automatic transmission in brackets):

  • 1.4 - 7.2 (8.5) l. in the city and 4.8 (5.1) l. along the track,
  • 1.6 - 8 (8.9) l. in the urban cycle and 4.8 (5.3) outside the city.

If we compare passport data on fuel consumption of new and old power units, it turns out that Korean engineers have worked to reduce the appetite of engines. Maybe this caused some changes in torque?

For 2 engines I put 2 points.

Driving performance

To answer the question which car is better in terms of driving performance, I think no one can. The thing is that most budget cars in this respect are almost similar to each other. Of course, everyone has their own nuances, but by and large everything is the same. The bumps are equally “swallowed”, they steer almost the same and hold the road. Therefore, you can understand what you like best only by conducting a test drive.

The only moment can be announced. In the Kia Rio, the steering wheel in the lower position becomes tight, plus at high speed, according to some, it becomes “empty” - it disappears Feedback. The Volkswagen Polo did not have this problem.

Since perception driving performance- the matter is purely personal, then I will not compare cars and evaluate them on this item.

Summarizing

First, let's sum up the scores:

I am not a fan of Volkswagen, Polo in particular. But somehow it happened that even I gave him a final score much higher than the Kia Rio. To be honest, up to this point, the Korean state employee impressed me more. So this is the most unexpected result for me. Therefore, I think that if I were faced with the question of what is better to buy: a Volkswagen Polo or a Kia Rio, then most likely I would take a German sedan, even though its interior makes me a little sad. Longing, in its essence, is an emotion, and it is better to be guided in the choice by reasonable arguments.

To the question of what is more reliable, I think it can be answered that at present, automakers are trying their best to ensure that their cars are at a high level in terms of reliability. Especially ambitious Korean brands like Kia - they sleep and see that the consumer perceives their cars on an equal footing with Japanese and European brands. From this it follows that the compared budget cars practically do not differ in reliability.

Another thing, which is cheaper to maintain? This question can be answered by looking for spare parts in online stores. A cursory look at several sites reveals that body iron, optics, etc. prices are higher for Kia Rio, and for mechanics of different prices, higher for Volkswagen Polo. So, again, everyone has to make their own choice.

It would seem that one platform, almost the same equipment, similar features and positioning should reduce the difference between cars to a minimum. The example showed that even in this case there is still a difference, although not too significant. For Polo and Rapid, it turned out to be even more noticeable - maybe this is one of the steps to reduce, or maybe it is the desire to clearly separate the cars in positioning. Be that as it may, this does not interfere with evaluating cars in terms of the profitability of the purchase.

There are some peculiarities not only in prices and richness of equipment, but also in the variability of the latter, and in the technical component. Speaking of technology, it is worth noting, for example, that with the same lines of power units, the combination of the top-end 1.4-liter TSI turbo engine with 125 hp. with six-speed mechanics is available only for Polo: in Rapid it is combined exclusively with a seven-speed DSG. Another nuance concerns the base 1.6-liter MPI with 90 hp: Volkswagen in the richest trim levels is not equipped with it, but Skoda can have an “initial” engine under the hood, even in the top version.

But one of the main difficulties in directly comparing these cars was the difference in approaches to modeling configurations. The point here is that Volkswagen offers almost all the options in packages, grouping them according to their functional affiliation, and Skoda, in addition to similar packages, allows the buyer to add options “by the piece”, for some money. Need a heated windshield but not interested in rear row heating? No problem, they can be ordered separately. Need a rear wiper? You may not order it. Want cruise control, but do not want to overpay for the next package? And this problem is solvable.

As a result, an attempt to directly compare cars turns into a test: yes, there is no such option in this configuration, but you can buy it for little money, but something else is available from a competitor for this money ... Everything is complicated by the fact that Skoda has a There are four configurations on the sheet, while Volkswagen has five: the German sedan has a special version of LIFE, which completely “stuck” between the middle and the top, offering attractive options in a common package for less money. Therefore, the only right decision was to exclude special versions from the comparison list: we left the LIFE and GT versions behind for the Polo, and the Monte Carlo version for the Rapid. And only this approach made it possible to reduce the number of compared versions to equal numbers. Although, we emphasize again, this comparison remains not entirely direct due to the highest configuration flexibility, especially with the Czech brand.

Basic equipment

The basic equipment of both cars is restrained in German, in some ways even very much. At the start, of course, they are equipped with identical 1.6-liter engines with 90 hp, aggregated with a five-speed manual transmission. Both cars offer ABS, 2-way steering, power steering (electric for the Rapid, electromechanical for the Polo) and a simple 4-speaker audio setup. However, in further basic options, discrepancies are already beginning. So, Volkswagen, without stint, installs frontal airbags for the driver and passenger and power windows on all windows on any car, but Skoda is distinguished by the absence of a passenger airbag and manual “twists” for windows rear doors. In addition, the German sedan already in the base has a height adjustment of the driver's seat and a monochrome display between the instrument panel scales, but the Czech liftback does not. He, however, answers the others: each Rapid has heated windshield washer nozzles, central locking with a set of keys with remote control and system exchange rate stability, which Volkswagen will have much later or for a surcharge.

And one more important argument, which in some cases can claim to be decisive: the presence of an air conditioner. Yes, it is missing in both cars, but it can be ordered from the “Czech” for 35,600 rubles even for the initial Entry configuration, but the “German” does not allow such liberties, including it in the mandatory equipment of the next configuration.

True, there is not too much monetary benefit in such a decision: the starting Rapid Entry already costs 611,000 rubles against 599,900 for the Polo Conceptline, and the air conditioner brings this amount to 646,600, which is more expensive than the next version of the German sedan. But in the second versions, there are also certain differences.

A little more options

The second step for these machines is akin to a “real base”: for both, quite a bit is added. True, this "a little" means different things for different money.

So, the performance of Trendline in Polo differs from the starting one by the presence of an air conditioner. And disc rear brakes - but only if you fork out for a 110-horsepower engine, because the base 90-horsepower is only drums. That's the whole functional set - and besides the size of the “stamping” disks (14-inch for a 90-horsepower engine and 15-inch for a 110-horsepower), this is actually an absolutely exhaustive list of additions.

Rapid Active has a slightly longer list - however, it all consists of what was “missing” in the starting configuration: there will be two front airbags instead of one, height adjustment of the driver’s seat and on-board computer. Well, the 110-horsepower engine, like the Polo, is equipped with disc rear brakes. There is only one “but”: there is still no air conditioning!

But those who are seriously concerned about choosing between these two cars should pay attention to the little things starting from these basic versions. After all, Skoda wouldn’t be itself if it didn’t offer a little more convenient details: for example, Rapid always has individual reading lights in the front, pockets on the side of the front seats and a branded ice scraper, while the Active version is complemented by a 12-volt socket, stowage compartments and hooks for bags in the trunk. And in the future, the Czech approach "Simply clever" will still remind of itself.

Well, here it’s worth once again (and not for the last) time to say about the possibility of supplementing the equipment with optional packages. Air conditioning, heating, parking sensors, and even a rear-view camera and side airbags are available for a fee from Skoda, and although Volkswagen does not indulge in all of these “luxury” options, it also makes it possible to significantly “improve” the car.

From a technical point of view, the rivals have parity: both cars offer a choice between a 90-horsepower and 110-horsepower version of the 1.6 engine, which in the first case is complemented exclusively by mechanics, and in the second by an optional six-speed automatic. But it doesn’t smell like price parity: the prices are in the range of 639,900 - 729,900 rubles for Polo and 667,000 - 770,000 rubles for Rapid, and after all, many will want to supplement the second with air conditioning, bringing the difference to a good hundred thousand ... It remains to console yourself with the fact that the surcharge for the machine is the same for both and amounts to 45,000 rubles.

Right with air conditioning

Usually such a subheading appears in the second configuration budget sedans, but this time it "slid" down a little. But the equipment in the third versions - Comfortline for Polo and Ambition for Rapid - is no longer so striking with its "inequality". True, questions remain with the price - but more on that later, first we'll figure out what the Germans and Czechs will treat the buyer to.

Both will complement their cars with electrically adjustable and heated exterior mirrors, heated front seats and a decent head unit with AUX, USB, SD card support and Bluetooth. Skoda also has an Apple Chip in the radio's list of features, which allows you to play music when you connect the appropriate devices via USB. Immediately, the “Czech” catches up with the “German” in terms of the presence of rear power windows and air conditioning, and the “German”, in turn, gets heated windshield washer nozzles and the ability to control the central lock remotely with a key, which the “Czech” has long had.

But the matter is not limited to this: while Rapid only receives a full set of power windows, Polo Comfortline already has for them auto mode with protection against pinching, and also flaunts a leather-trimmed steering wheel, gearshift lever and handbrake. Skoda responds with front fog lights and a hill-climb assist, which, however, is offered only for cars with DSG.

The price forks for these configurations, as mentioned above, differ markedly: for Volkswagen they ask from 684,900 to 769,900 rubles, and for Skoda - from 768,000 to 911,000. Such a big difference in the cost of the most expensive versions can be explained by the fact that for Polo is not yet offered with an older 125-horsepower 1.4 TSI engine, but Rapid can be equipped with it, and even paired with a non-alternative seven-speed DSG, and the surcharge for a 1.6-liter unit with a gun will be only 40 thousand. However, versions with 1.6 and mechanics still have a difference of 84 thousand, which is a lot for the class, and it is difficult to justify such an imbalance with a couple of little things like a glasses case and an illuminated glove box.

Non-top top

Gradually, we got to the older versions of both cars: for Volkswagen it is traditionally called Highline, and for Skoda - Style. True, despite the highest position in the configuration hierarchy, they do not mean at all that the cars will be equipped to the highest standard: the list of additional paid options is extensive for both competitors. But we will get to it later - but for now let's see what marketers have included in the "basic top performance".

Of course, in both cases, it was not without climate control, fog lights and alloy wheels- on this, as well as the central armrest, the similarities in trim levels ended. And the differences began: for example, Volkswagen “caught up” with the competitor in terms of the Apple component in the radio, and also got hold of a heated windshield and a standard alarm. But Rapid this time responds with a much more serious set of options: in addition to the “belated” leather trim of the controls and the LED taillights exclusive to this pair, it “attacks” with cruise control and side airbags, as well as little things like an interior mirror with auto-dimming and duplication multimedia functions on the steering wheel. Added to Rapid and a fraction of exclusively Czech chips: background LED lights interior and an umbrella under the front passenger seat complete the number of "cozy" solutions.

The difference in the cost of configurations this time also turns out to be not so shocking, starting from 29 thousand: to buy a Polo, you will need from 784,900 to 864,900 rubles, and Rapid - from 813,000 to 956,000. However, this is due to the “cunning” mentioned above: for 813,000 rubles you can buy a Czech liftback with a 90-horsepower engine and a manual transmission, but such a unit is not available for a German sedan - here there will be at least a 110-horsepower engine under the hood. Therefore, in comparable versions with the same power units, the price gap between the models still fluctuates around 90 thousand rubles, but this time it is justified important nuances equipment.

By the way, we’ll repeat something else: when buying a Polo with a 125-horsepower TSI, you can save as much as 70 thousand by choosing six-speed mechanics instead of a seven-speed DSG - in the top version, the surcharge for the “robot” will be just that. But the hydromechanical machine, relying on a 110-horsepower 1.6 MPI, costs 45 thousand in the price lists of both cars.

Maximum equipment

Well, as a "snack" we traditionally leave cars stuffed to the brim with paid options from the configurator. It is worth noting that we have added exceptionally functional “specials” to the equipment, leaving style effects like wheels, spoilers and contrasting colors overboard. And this experiment also brought some important and interesting discoveries.

You can buy a lot for both cars. Equally available options include bi-xenon headlights with washers, a rearview camera, rain and light sensors, front and rear parking sensors, as well as advanced multimedia head units with a color screen. True, the Czech Amundsen system pleases with the presence of a navigation component, but there is no mention of the presence of navigation in the German “head”. In addition, the Polo will have to pay extra for everything that was already part of the Rapid Style package: multifunction steering wheel, cruise control, side airbags and an auto-dimming interior rear-view mirror are paid options here. A small - albeit paid - exclusive bonus is the exterior rear-view mirrors with electric folding and turn signal.

But Skoda offers to pay extra for completely different things. And not just others - but those that Polo does not have for any money. Windshield heating and alarm are not included, but heating rear seats, side curtain airbags, a keyless entry and start system, and an automatic high beam control system are very much included. In addition, the front passenger seat can also be adjusted in height.

And here - for the last time - we will mention the more flexible configuration of the car in the Czech version. Some things here are not only cheaper, but also available separately: for example, Polo's bi-xenon headlights are combined in a package with headlight washers and cost 56,990 rubles, while Rapid's bi-xenon headlights (in combination with front fog lights) cost 38,300 for Ambition and 33 300 for the Style version, and you can add them with washers if you wish for 6 700.

In the photo: Volkswagen Polo Sedan "2015–present and Skoda Rapid" 2017

Ultimately, the price tag of the most packaged Rapid turns out to be expectedly higher than that of the Polo: all of the above "exclusive" options cost money. Therefore, for Volkswagen with all option packages, you will have to pay 1,022,850 rubles, and for Skoda - 1,159,500 rubles. The psychological barrier of a million is broken in both cases - but the German sedan gently “pierces” it, and the Czech liftback already thoroughly destroys it, offering a little more for a little more money.

conclusions

The final conclusions about the profitability of the purchase, as always, remain with the buyer. Someone will prefer to get a more practical liftback body combined with the pleasant features of the Czech approach to the perception of the car, and someone will choose to save almost a hundred thousand rubles in a comparable configuration or focus maximum attention on a pair of 125-horsepower engine and mechanical box gears. There is a lot to think about here, and the clock in the configurator is still waiting for almost anyone who meticulously configures a car to suit their budget and needs – and, as usual, we hope that we have made the decision process much easier.

After a detailed study, I would choose ...

Coming to a car dealership, you should not rush to make a choice, you need to make a short review of each of the presented models, or maybe even arrange a test drive for your favorite VW Polo or VW Jetta car. In any case, it is not necessary to exclude from the field of view and more expensive cars- it is possible that among the models of a class above the same brand there is an option that is beneficial for you in every sense. However, as practice shows, in reality, buying a car for an average person looks like this.

Any potential client dealer center Volkswagen has probably already made its choice in advance. This can be argued for several reasons:

  • firstly, almost every price niche has a single version of the model, but in several trim levels, which allows you to choose a car to your taste, in terms of its optional equipment;
  • secondly, most models come in a certain type of body, which significantly narrows the number options for purchase;
  • thirdly, in most cases, it is the financial capabilities of the client, as a rule, by themselves make the choice for him.

But even if everything happens this way, you should not be upset, because even an expensive car does not always justify its cost in practice. Consider how the VW Jetta differs from the VW Polo and how this difference in “prestige” is financially justified.

Alignment to "C - class"?

In order to equalize the chances of winning, and for a more objective opinion from the outside, we decided to make a comparison of the VW Jetta model of the basic configuration and the VW Polo car top version. As a result, we got applicants equal in strength and value. Now a small review for each of the presented models.

Volkswagen Jetta is the implementation of the 3 in 1 car project. That is, a model that was originally supposed to become not only prestigious and comfortable, but also affordable. In practice, only the first two points of the plan were implemented. As for the cost, everything is also a big question here.

The fact is that in order for the Jetta to look like a worthy premium class sedan, it must be purchased complete with a suitable 122-horsepower turbocharged engine. The rest of the options will only be a distant vision of the “C-class” and will not bring the expected delight from the dynamics and power. Today average price for such a modification 778 thousand rubles. and this price tag is constantly updated, increasing, each time, by about a thousand dollars. We still take into account Volkswagen model Jetta with 85 hp and having a fast acceleration to 100 km / h in 13 s. It practically does not differ from the basic version of the Jetta. The undeniable advantages of such a basic car can be considered the presence of:

  1. inflatable safety curtains;
  2. tire pressure sensors;
  3. heating of windshield washer nozzles.

It is also believed that the Jetta attracts the most buyers due to its economic and environmental parameters.

What can please us in response to a more modest, but no less daring volkswagen sedan Polo and its top equipment. Now let's find out the most Interesting Facts and indicators.

VW Polo sets new standards

Despite the fact that the sedan is assembled in Kaluga, however, the Polo is not much inferior to the Jetta, except perhaps if we compare them in terms of overall dimensions. At Polo sedan the base is much shorter, however, for the full comfort of rear seat passengers, some 3.5 cm are missing, which is not so tragic. The trunk is quite suitable in size and leaves no doubt about its spaciousness. Thanks to its lighter weight, the Polo gets off to a good start with a 105-horsepower unit under the hood and shows excellent dynamics on the road. Still would! After all, an engine with a displacement of 1.6 liters is much easier to cope with a small and light sedan.

What else you need to pay attention to when making your choice in favor of the top modification of the Polo from Volkswagen:

  • dynamic stabilization system;
  • windshield heating;
  • rear parking sensors;
  • light alloy wheels;
  • built-in original alarm.

Well, if you additionally order the Premium package, which includes a whole set of options responsible for safety, then as a result we get a comfortable and safe sedan, with good dynamics and a large trunk.

Options: Degree of implementation VW Jetta VW Polo
Interior Salons look decent in both models. The Jetta has a better on-board computer, the Polo has a more interesting seat finish. Between the cars there is only a significant difference in body length of 10 cm. + +
capacity The Polo is spacious enough, but it’s hard for him to argue with a larger sedan - the Jetta has a more spacious and comfortable lounge, as well as this model offers more room for rear passengers. +
load capacity The luggage compartment of the Polo, although not the largest in its class, but there are no complaints about it. And yet, in terms of cargo transportation, the Jetta is clearly a priority. +
Dynamism As it turned out, exactly the same power unit as that of the VW Jetta allows Polo to show more interesting acceleration dynamics. +
Controllability Both sedans know how to give the driver pleasure. But, as practice shows, a more budgetary Polo rides with a 1.6-liter engine much more interesting than a similarly equipped Jetta. +
Comfort Comfortable ride - the advantage of both models, however, on uneven areas pavement Jetta still shows some advantage. +

Thus, if we conduct a small comparative analysis of the given data and characteristics, then the conclusion about whether there is a difference between the Volkswagen Jetta and Polo suggests itself. With almost identical functionality, the budget Volkswagen Polo looks more worthy in terms of dynamism, maneuverability, and economy. It is also worth mentioning that for a price similar to the base Jetta, you can get more generous optional equipment on the Polo, and even save a little. Meanwhile, it should be understood that this difference will have to be "paid" with a smaller capacity and spaciousness of the cabin, as well as a less energy-intensive suspension. As a result of the study, we got all the advantages and disadvantages of each of the models, but still it is necessary to understand that when acquiring vehicle increased danger, the main task of any car owner is to ensure safety, then any trip will be a pleasure.
