It is possible that the quality of the products of the AvtoVAZ concern, with the latest changes made to new models, will soon cease to be an occasion for jokes - and this cannot but rejoice. Specifications new Lada XRay has already managed to impress many.

Description of development opportunities

As can be seen in the proposed photos, which were taken during the preliminary show of the X Ray and Vesta concepts back in 2014, this car has impressive overall dimensions. The length of the body is 4165 mm, its width is 1764 mm and its height is 1570 mm. These dimensions, like wheelbase 2592 mm long, will remain, according to the designers, the same for all Lada X Ray cars. Characteristics related to other indicators and parameters may differ significantly.

Regarding modifications and changes to this model, the designers and the general director automobile concern AvtoVAZ announced that X-Ray will be produced in three different drive versions. The body, according to the management of the concern, will remain unchanged (relative to the type in which it is now mass-produced Lada XRay) - however, the possibility of easy restyling, if necessary, is not excluded.

Currently, only the front-wheel drive version of this new car is ready for sale. The release of the all-wheel drive version of the Lada X Ray Cross in the form of a full-fledged SUV should take place in the second half of 2016 - and around the same time a car with a switchable 4x2 all-wheel drive will be released, combining all the advantages of the two described modifications.

Hatchback Lada X Ray

AvtoVAZ designers even before the start of development production model stated that this car will not claim the title of urban crossover, even despite the huge resemblance. In all sources, thanks to this, this car is referred to exclusively as a hatchback (or SUV).

Many domestic motorists were looking forward to new car Lada XRay hatchback - the characteristics and almost complete elimination of all the mistakes of previous failed models played a role. The car is perfect for both city driving and use for traveling on broken gravel roads, thanks to the high (195 mm in running order) ground clearance and powerful suspension. The suspension, according to experts, turned out to be very dynamic and pleasant: the front one is made independent, according to the MacPherson system, and the rear one is a solid elastic beam with powerful springs.

Though this model is not an SUV, the designers have done everything possible to make this car more stable on the track. Rear axle 35 mm longer than the front one, thanks to which the car will be much more dynamic and maneuverable than expected from a car of similar dimensions.

Power units

The technical characteristics of the new Lada X-Ray largely depend on the power units used for its assembly. It is worth considering the possibilities offered by the designers and evaluating everything that can be placed under the hood of this model.

The simplest and cheapest power unit used to equip this vehicle, consists of a standard "VAZ" 1.6-liter engine with 106 horsepower and is complemented by a French five-speed manual shift transmission from Renault. Both the engine and the manual transmission have already been used in a number of previous developments (the engine was used with resounding success in the development of the Lada Vesta sedan, the gearbox was also used in the assembly of this model). Mechanical transmission domestic production is not used due to its noisiness, which could not be "cured" after Lada Kalina went on sale.

A more advanced version of the powertrain combines the same powertrain with a 1.6-liter engine from Nissan, producing 110 horsepower. The difference is quite small, but this motor is objectively better than the domestic one, more productive and more durable.

The most powerful powertrain proposed for a hatchback Lada XRay, combines a 1.8 liter sixteen-valve with 122 hp. with a five-speed robotic automatic transmission (AMT). The characteristics of the Lada X Ray machine will be significantly higher than those of previous configurations, due to the significantly greater engine power. However, fuel consumption will also increase significantly, which makes the best power unit offered by a double-edged sword.

Speed, acceleration and fuel consumption

Each of the proposed power units has its own capabilities. They are worth considering in more detail.

  • The power unit based on a 106-horsepower engine has good fuel consumption (7.6 liters per 100 kilometers), but rather weak acceleration (11.9 seconds from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour). The maximum speed of the model equipped with this engine is only 170 km / h - lower than that of the basic configuration of Vesta due to its greater mass.
  • The power unit based on a 110-horsepower engine accelerates much faster - from zero to hundreds, it can accelerate in just 10.3 seconds. The maximum speed is not much different from the previous unit - only 171 km / h, but fuel consumption is significantly lower and is only 6.9 liters per 100 kilometers.
  • The most powerful and productive unit based on a 122-horsepower engine is capable of speeds up to 183 km/h and is much more dynamic. Nevertheless, automatic switching gears significantly reduces the ability of the car to quickly accelerate from a standstill. With more power, this power unit allows you to accelerate from a standstill to 100 km / h in 10.9 seconds. Nevertheless, the machine allows you to reduce fuel consumption: you need only 7.1 liters per 100 kilometers.

This calculation allows us to say with confidence that the X Ray Optima equipment equipped exclusively with the first type of power unit is unlikely to be in high demand. It will be more profitable for the buyer to purchase a more advanced version, which will be both more convenient and cheaper in operation.

Complete set

Currently, the car is offered in four types of equipment, the characteristics and prices of which are already known and publicly available on the official website of the AvtoVAZ concern. There are two basic configurations (Optima and Top) and two packages additional options, available to equip a car of a certain configuration (Comfort - for the basic, Prestige - for the highest).

It is noteworthy that the basic version of Optima (without the Comfort option package) can only be equipped with the first described power unit. All other versions of the vehicle configurations can be equipped with both a second and a third power unit, depending on the preferences of the buyer.

The interior and "stuffing" of cars seriously depend on what configuration the user chooses. For example, the radio and on-board computer are already in the basic version of the Lada X-Ray, and the air conditioner appears only when choosing a version not lower than Comfort. Maximum equipment offers the buyer a comfortable interior with leather elements, a touch-screen multimedia panel (also known from Vesta), heated seats and a host of other pleasant and useful features.

SUV Lada X Ray Cross

The characteristics of the crossover Lada XRay are not yet known. However, it is known that they plan to release it in two versions: constant and switchable four-wheel drive. What changes will have to affect these cars in order for them to be considered full-fledged SUVs - off-road vehicles?

First of all, the scheme of power units will probably be significantly redesigned. The all-wheel drive transfers engine forces to both wheel axles, resulting in reduced top speed and agility of the car in exchange for increased traction. In order for the car not to become too slow, the characteristics of the motors will have to be sufficient to meet the needs of all-wheel drive. It is assumed that the 1.8-liter engine from AvtoVAZ with a nominal power of 122 horsepower, and for equipping more advanced versions - turbocharged engine of the same brand, reinforced to 140 "horses".

Most likely, the changes will affect the suspension. The characteristics of the Lada XRay Cross should be aimed at ensuring that the car is comfortably operated even in off-road conditions. Still, the front-wheel drive hatchback, although it is the optimal combination of features, was designed primarily for urban use. The suspension, according to experts, will have to be strengthened and modified to fully comply with the portrait of the future SUV.

There is also unconfirmed information that has become available to the public that the concern is going to stop developing all-wheel drive versions of the X Ray. Many motorists in Russia have already expressed dissatisfaction with this fact.

However, the Lada XRay reviews contain too many references to the expectation of all-wheel drive versions for the AvtoVAZ concern to turn a blind eye to them and stop development. As some statistics show, almost half of all motorists are looking forward to the X Ray cross version.

However, remembering the successful creation of an all-wheel drive Duster on this platform, one might wonder if Lada is planning something similar? Indeed, based on the Duster units, the all-wheel drive XRay was announced repeatedly - either as the Lada X-Ray Cross or as the Lada XRay X. Alas, the release dates of new items are shifting all the time.

Given the unification over many nodes of the XRay family with Renault cars, we should expect that the clearance of the "X-Ray Cross" will be similar or close to this figure for the Duster, that is, 205-210 mm.

Car compared to competitors

What can oppose a car with the Lada nameplate to similarly priced models of other brands? With the closest relatives carrying a diamond on the hood, it’s already clear - Logan and Sandero are 10 mm lower, Duster is the same amount higher, and Stepway is a twin brother. What is the clearance of other brands of cars?

If you take cars of a similar class, then the market can offer the following options:

  • Nissan Terrano - in the current incarnation, this is the same Duster with its 210 mm.
  • Lifan X60 is only 179 mm, and to this we must add a common prejudice about Chinese "quality".
  • Lifan X50 with its 200 mm figure as a crossover is significantly better than the X60, but the lack of even engine and gearbox protection in the basic configuration seriously limits the car's capabilities out of the box.
  • Although Lada Kalina Cross is not a direct competitor for XRay, but 200 mm to the crankcase and a lower price can still sway the buyer in their favor.
  • The Suzuki Vitara is not only more expensive, but also 10mm lower than the XRay.
  • The Suzuki SX4 is lower than the Ray in any variant: if the all-wheel drive car has a difference of only 5 mm, then the front-wheel drive loses all 20 mm to the XRay.

It is worth remembering ordinary city sedans and hatchbacks, although they will clearly lose to the Togliatti crossover:

Not a single number

The cross-country ability of a car is made up of many parameters, and it cannot be described only with body geometry numbers. How does the novelty from Tolyatti really behave outside the city roads?

When adapting the B0 platform to the new model, the engineers changed the steering settings. As a result, it has become noticeably sharper than on the Stepway, but you have to pay for this with a distinct transfer of all irregularities to the steering wheel. Lada X-Ray is positioned by the manufacturer as an SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) in the category subcompact crossovers. In fact, the car has nothing to do with this class. This is a standard five-door hatchback with increased ground clearance, built on the B0 sedan platform. Despite decent ground clearance, X-Ray is designed for city streets. It was first presented to the general public in August 2015 as part of the Moscow Auto Show Off Road Show. However, the conceptual model debuted long before that - its presentation took place back in 2012 at the International Motor Show in Moscow. In the near future, the urban pseudo-SUV Lada X-Ray will appear in an updated form, but no one knows exactly when.

The base of the X-Ray is the same as that of the sedan, therefore, with its own overall dimensions it's not much different. Its parameters are:

The main feature of this hatchback is its decent ground clearance, which is 195 mm, and with a maximum curb weight, the ground clearance is reduced to 170 mm. Inside the cabin, everything resembles the usual Lada Vesta. In terms of its architecture, the equipment is not futuristic, but it is quite informative and understandable. Dashboard has everything you need, each device has its own well - there are three in total. The screen is on the right on-board computer. The modern four-spoke steering wheel has a clear relief.

Top configurations are equipped with a multifunctional steering wheel with duplicate navigation control buttons, telephone, cruise control and audio system. A 7-inch touchscreen is built into the middle of the center console. On both sides of it there are deflectors of the ventilation and heating system.

In the cabin, plastic is used for decoration, not the highest quality, but not hard either. Seats are upholstered in fabric. The front seats have mediocre lateral support, but it is possible to adjust the position for tilt and height. To accommodate various small things in the interior of the hatchback, a large number of places are provided - pockets with cup holders on the front doors, a retractable luggage compartment under the passenger seat in front. Under the center console is also a niche and two cupholders. The rear row of seats is represented by a solid sofa with a simple design and comfortable relief. Passengers will be comfortable to sit, but no additional comfort is provided.

The luggage compartment of the X-Ray is modest even compared to the sedan - only 372 liters. But if you fold rear seats, the useful volume increases to 1380 liters. The transformation allows you to get a luggage compartment with a flat floor.

Hidden under the trunk mat is a full-size spare wheel radius R15. At the same time, the car in the basic equipment is equipped with R16 wheels.

The top engine is a domestic development, the first engine in the history of AvtoVAZ with a capacity of 122 hp. from. and a volume of 1.8 liters. Peak load is reached at 5500 rpm with a rated torque of 173 Nm. It uses distributed fuel injection, a 16-valve gas distribution system. The node can work in tandem with a five-speed mechanical box gear or with robotic gearbox with five gears.

As a platform for the X-Ray, AvtoVAZ borrowed the B0 base from the Renault-Nissan concern. Structurally, it does not allow the introduction of all-wheel drive. The front suspension is a standard MacPherson strut, while the rear is a semi-independent torsion beam. Steering gear with rack, which is complemented by an electric booster. Configuration differences

However, a clearance of 195 (or 190) millimeters is quite enough for Russian roads, even somewhere in the outback. The hatchback confidently overcomes obstacles and bumps on rough terrain, and the driver does not need to listen with bated breath to see if the car has hit the bottom. Still, do not forget that the X-Ray is not a full-fledged SUV or even a crossover. Manufacturers have repeatedly explained - this is just a high hatchback. Therefore, the clearance of the car can be called sufficient.

In the process of adapting the platform to X-Ray production, the designers decided to change the steering settings. In practice, it turned out that it added not only positive aspects. Yes, steering X-Ray has become a little sharper than the Renault Sandero Stepway. However, this comes at the cost of driver comfort. The thing is that due to the changed settings, all the bumps are very clearly transmitted to the steering wheel.

Apparently, the designers decided that their offspring would be used mainly for active driving on urban asphalt. By the way, this is facilitated by a fairly powerful 122-horsepower 1.8-liter engine. Sharp handling combined with good dynamics is a really great option for driving around the city. Well, there are many other cars to conquer serious off-road.
