Music, navigation and other matters in the Toyota RAV4 are managed by the Toyota Touch 2 multimedia system with a 6.1-inch touch screen located at the top of the center console. The display does not have the most outstanding graphics, but you stop paying attention to this when you see how helpfully the system behaves, how quickly it responds to the next request.

You get even more respect for it when you turn on the all-round view, which is provided by four cameras that create a clear three-dimensional image of the surrounding space.

It is not very convenient that the keys for selecting the transmission mode, seat heating, glass heating are deeply hidden in the lower part of the center console. It would seem that they have the very place next to the gear selector, but no, Toyota has everything in its own way, although, from the point of view of ergonomics, this is not the best option.

As for the architecture of the center console itself, the side panels of the doors, the quality of finishing materials and assembly, they are simply on top. Probably, Toyota would not be itself, if it happened otherwise. In general, the sensations are the most pleasant: in the RAV4 you feel at the height of the situation, when the fuss, tension, even fatigue fade into the background, leaving only the pleasure of driving this car relevant, which is also served by a fairly decent set standard equipment and electronic assistants.

It is impossible to completely turn off the ESP, and this is bad, but the Rafik in a difficult situation rows to victory until it sits on its belly. But it swallows pits and potholes at once, I can say this for sure. Tested on myself in the Vladimir region on the way to Frolishchi, whoever was there will understand.

After a few minutes of off-road driving, the Mitsubishi Outlander electronics limits the engine speed to prevent overheating of the transmission. The shaking suspension forces you to drop the course even in front of modest-looking pits. If there is a larger caliber irregularity, a painful blow will follow, to which not only the seat, but also the steering wheel responds. Competitors don't allow that.

Thanks to the ground clearance increased to 200 mm, you can drive on the CR-V without looking back. Compared to the gambling machine of the previous generation, new CR-V more sedate, it does not respond so sharply to the steering wheel and sways imposingly on road waves. The smoothness of the ride has become noticeably better: in this part, the CR-V puts both the RAV4 and the Outlander on the blades. The X-Trail holds the road very well, accelerates, but you can’t call it a racing car either. The clearance allows you not to be afraid of pits and potholes, but here the car will pass everything well, but these pits will still break through the suspension and tell you about it with a heavy kick.

Everything is simple, but reliable! In the old days, the Rav4 was the proud owner of a powerful V6. With such an engine, he could compete on equal terms in dynamics up to 100 km / h with the Lexus IS, almost in no way inferior to the lean sedan. Alas, that golden age is gone forever.

The second element that creates an atmosphere during movement is the transmission. In our case, this is a 6-speed automatic transmission. How to describe her work in a few words? She's boring, period! She performs her duties with a bang, but one should not expect anything special from her.

The above two elements, engine and transmission, create a contradictory symbiosis. The fourth generation Rav4 is distinguished by some special sense of dynamics. It seems to accelerate well, but in some maneuvers where you need to quickly accelerate, you have to push the right pedal to the floor. The engine begins to raise the tone of the sound, the tachometer needle quickly reaches its maximum values, the six-speed gearbox juggles gears like an acrobat in a circus, hoping to find a suitable gear for this particular driving mode, while not forgetting to save fuel as much as possible, as a result, it turns out that the car does not receive the acceleration you expect from it. Individual technical feature, nothing to do about. However, Toyota's transmission performance can hardly be called bad, the shifts are clear and smooth, which is good.

Compared to the CR-V, our hero significantly loses in dynamics, this is especially clearly visible when accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h.

What about manageability? Everything here is also standard for Rav4, it is quite lean. In principle, nothing special can be expected from the crossover taxiing, so it would be wrong to put this in the category of its minuses. Another feature that should be taken for granted.

Soft movement like a Lexus


Driving a Rav4 is a revelation to many, Toyota has learned how to build robust and road-feeling vehicles. Despite some archaism of the platform, it performs its work with five plus, silence reigns in the cabin, and the stability of the crossover on imperfect asphalt amazes even experienced riders. Noise isolation is excellent, perhaps the best in the segment.

The mid-price crossover is generally distinguished by a sense of build quality, fit of interior elements and the quality of the materials used, as if you are in a Lexus, and not in a Toyota. The suspension, despite some softness and valkost, does not give excessive rolls in sharp and high-speed turns and does not break through on road potholes.

Electronic assistants (for example, the Toyota Torque Control AWD system) will not let you get stuck in deep snow or muddy mud. Within reason, of course.


Inside, the Rav4 is well equipped and comfortable for daily use in the city. It is important to note that even in the initial configurations, the manufacturer took care of the customers and provided them with maximum convenience and a well-thought-out interface. In the top trim levels, the car owner will get a lot of luxury extras like leather, chrome inserts, and even incomprehensible marbled door trim and center console.*

The infotainment system is a classic example of Toyota's interface that the company preinstalls on all of its vehicles. A somewhat dated concept, but the interface is much easier to operate and manage than in many other cars. When designing fourth generation compact SUV, a recipe for success was applied, which was used by almost all rivals. What does it mean?

Spacious interior, balanced suspension and good transmission. Armed with these advantages, Toyota RAV4 2.2 D-4D again enters into a difficult confrontation with its new competitors. One of the rivals is the compatriot Forester, the only one in the test with permanent all-wheel drive on all wheels. Although it may not be noticeable at first glance, the spacious Subaru has many other advantages.

The new Ford Kuga is a German player in the Euro-Asian competition. The crossover looks more like its predecessor, but has grown significantly and become more spacious.

Compared to its predecessor, it has a more spacious interior, provides a higher level of comfort and is more suitable for the role of a family car. With all this, he remained quite dynamic with almost sporty behavior. The Kuga, with its extremely direct steering, takes corners with wild joy without torturing passengers with too stiff suspension. Ford, after the increase in dimensions, can not be called cramped, but, nevertheless, Toyota and Subaru are still more spacious. Ford has less legroom than rivals, but the largest supply of headroom.


In Ford, there was a place for previously known weaknesses. All the same 140-horsepower turbodiesel works properly, but in the high-rev range it seems that it is overworked and does not work as quietly as we would like. In addition, the seat upholstery is unpleasant and thin, and the signs are not legible enough. The switches on the center console are too small, and the order in which they are placed gives the impression of a mess.


The design of the rear seat back is much more thoughtful, as they can be folded with one hand movement, and this forms a flat surface of the cargo compartment. It is a pity that the car is not fully thought out in terms of transportation: with a fairly high load capacity, the trunk holds only 481 liters.


Subaru Forester 2.0 D - an SUV of yesterday's freshness

Although the design of the new Forester has not become revolutionary compared to its predecessor, this does not mean that it is ugly.


In addition, just such a body has its advantages. The first of them is noticeable immediately after landing. The doors open almost at a right angle, which makes it easier to access the salon. Another advantage is the large interior space that passengers enjoy in both the front and rear seats. Moreover, there is more legroom on the second row than the rest of the test participants.


When moving the lever in the luggage compartment, the rear seat backrests fall forward on their own. This allows you to increase the volume of the luggage compartment from 505 to 1577 liters. This is a good volume, but the Toyota's trunk is larger.


Worthy of praise and visibility. The driver, looking back, really sees everything that happens behind the car, and not wide rear racks like other SUVs.

However, the Forester lacks modernity. The chairs are too small and do not hold the body well. The tailgate threshold is too high - 74 cm, and the tailgate opens too low - 1.81 m. luggage compartment and the strange instrument cluster are more reminiscent of cars of yesteryear rather than current trends prevalent in today's automotive fashion. The variety of switches and indicators gives the impression that several styles are used at the same time in the design.


Many of these shortcomings are compensated by the suspension, which provides a reasonable compromise between driving dynamics and an adequate level of comfort. It is a pity that this positive picture is spoiled by a long braking distances. It remains to enjoy the lively and decisive 2-liter boxer. The Japanese diesel is not only strong enough and economical (6.3 l / 100 km), but also has a low level of vibration.

With good dynamic characteristics the car does not require a lot of fuel. Average fuel consumption during the test was 6.6 l/100 km. Given these benefits, it's no surprise that the new RAV4 is gaining more and more interest.

To this it is worth adding a fairly comfortable suspension, which allows the body to sway only on very large irregularities. The latter causes discomfort in people with very sensitive stomachs, but these can be put up with, as well as poor visibility.


Unfortunately, the Toyota RAV4 is hard to stop, literally! An impressive 42 meters from 100 km / h for a modern SUV is a serious failure. After all, this is 6 meters more than the Ford Kuga.
