Mentioning the steering wheel, one cannot but say a special “thank you” to the Japanese who decided to equip it with a heating system! The fact is that we got a RAV4 for the test with a 2.2-liter 150-horsepower diesel engine and a six-speed automatic transmission. The Japanese, of course, well done, which provided in the "winter" package for the RAV4 not only a "warm steering wheel", but also electric heating windshield, it was very useful to us during the test.
Theoretically, the winter package of options also includes interior heaters with an engine. We used the word "theoretically" here because, unfortunately, we were not able to find the results of the work of these systems. The point is that everything diesel engines warm up to operating temperature much longer than gasoline ones, even. This circumstance, combined with a 10-12-degree frost on the street, made it necessary to keep the steering wheel heating turned on almost constantly: the interior more or less warmed up no earlier than after 30-40 minutes of the trip. And most of the typical city "ends" take about the same amount of time.
Regarding the topic of comfort, we note the very correct design of the front seats. Far from all German cars, by the way, you can find a similar balance between comfort and tightness of the driver's body. Behind the wheel of the RAV4, even in a sharp turn, you won’t slip out of the “embraces” of the seat, and when driving calmly, you don’t feel like you are in the “bucket” of a racing machine from the WRX world. At the rear, the RAV4 has everything: enough space for passengers, 577 liters of luggage space, etc. Of the pleasant innovations, we note the fifth door electric drive that has appeared.
On the go, the updated crossover behaves almost the same as before. The Japanese claim that they redesigned the suspension by changing the characteristics of the springs and shock absorbers - consumers, they say, complained about the excessive rigidity of the car on the go. I don’t know how anyone, but for my taste, it’s more than what, and the suspension of the previous RAV could not boast of stiffness in any case. Still, according to representatives of Toyota, the rigidity of the body was increased in the car by welding additional amplifiers in the floor and sidewalls of the body. As a result, the average driver will not be able to unambiguously feel the significant difference between the behavior of the crossover before restyling and after. Yes, and nothing to him. Next year, the update is waiting for the "Highlander". And this is not about a full-fledged generation change, but about deep restyling. The crossover will get a modified exterior (especially for the front of the car), which will make it look a little like the "brother" Lexus RX.
It is expected that a new V6 engine with a displacement of 3.5 liters will appear under the hood of the “rogue”. It will be paired with an 8-speed automatic.
In addition, Highlander already in the “base” will acquire a start-stop system.
Toyota Camry
Camry experienced a generational change recently, just a year ago. But Japanese engineers and designers continue to work on improving their flagship sedan. So, already in 2018, the appearance of an updated car is expected.
According to unofficial data, Toyota management decided to abandon the time-tested, but already archaic and uneconomical power unit V6. Its place under the hood is likely to be taken by a new 4-cylinder turbocharged engine. By the way, a hybrid is also expected to appear in the same year.
