How long will the Kia Rio engine last. Engine and gearbox KIA Ceed (KIA Sid) their resource and repair

In 2006, a presentation of a new car took place KIA Ceed. Three months later, the first copy of a model built on the Hyundai-Kia J5 platform was released. The novelty has become widespread due to the new extraordinary design and high reliability. In just three years, more than 40 thousand copies of Kia Sid were sold. Sales grew everywhere, the domestic market was no exception.

A compact hatchback in a short period of time was able to take root on the roads of the post-Soviet countries. The car was reliable and unpretentious. Next, we will find out what the actual engine life is on the Kia Sid 1.4, 1.6 and whether the indicators differ significantly from the certified figures by the manufacturer.

Features of the structure of motors

Two developments of Korean engineers have received practical application: a motor with a working volume of 1.4 liters and a more powerful analogue of 1.6 liters. The first unit received the factory marking G4FA, the second - G4FC. Them design feature- aluminum body, which allowed to win a car about 15 kg. Less common was the 1.6-liter diesel engine CRDi. On our roads, such a modification is extremely rare, due to the high sensitivity of the diesel engine to low-quality fuel. After refueling with low-grade diesel fuel, drivers note problems with the catalyst, filter, and fuel system.

Both motors have the following characteristics:

  • The presence of two camshafts;
  • Chain drive;
  • The presence of a system for changing the valve timing;
  • Contactless ignition system.

In 2013, the start of production of the next Kia generation Sid. The degree of forcing the 1.6-liter engine has been increased from the nominal 122 hp. up to 204 hp due to the installed turbine. Both generations were equipped with 1.4, 1.6-liter power units, aggregated with a six-speed manual gearbox. The machine has received a lot of accolades from car owners for its fast and quiet operation. The mechanics until 2013 were distinguished by a 3-axle gear train.

Factory installed engine life on Kia Sid

Since both motors have a largely identical structure, their resource is also approximately the same. The manufacturer claims that you can feel comfortable driving KIA Ceed during the first 180 thousand km. What will be beyond this mark: the vagaries of the engine and constant unforeseen expenses? Of course not. Much service life power unit depends on timely maintenance and driving style. In practice, these two power plants are able to function smoothly for about 250-300 thousand km. But in order to achieve such outstanding performance, the owner of the car will have to really try.

Otherwise, the first serious breakdown can happen already at the turn of the first hundred thousand mileage. During this period, it is recommended to replace the chain, since its further operation can lead to the motor “jamming” due to its ability to stretch. Approaching the mark of 180-200 thousand km, you need to take care of the crankshaft liners and piston rings. Often, Kia Sid owners complain about engine knock, which can be observed both on “cold” and “hot” ones. In the first case, it is the timing chain that most often makes itself felt, in the second - unadjusted valves.

Reviews of car owners

Problems with diesel modification, as a rule, arise due to the turbine itself. Oil consumption increases sharply. In case of leakage engine oil it is necessary to check the valve cover, which often fails. In addition to the "musical" timing chain and valves, the owners note the noise emitted by the nozzles during engine operation. It is practically pointless to deal with this, because the manufacturer himself recognizes the “noisiness” of the structural element of the engine, explaining this as a feature of the motor. What is the actual resource of the Kia Sid 1.6 engine domestic gasoline? Reviews of car owners will tell in detail.

Engine 1.4 G4FA

  1. Eugene, Rostov. I go to KIA modifications Ceed 2013 with 1.4 engine. After passing the first 100 thousand kilometers, I went to a service station for diagnostics. Changed consumables, replaced the stabilizer, filters and springs. The car became like new, they said that the engine as a whole is in good condition and is able to still pass at least 150 thousand! So with proper maintenance, there are no problems with the motor in this car at all.
  2. Maxim, Stavropol. I have a 2009 build of the first generation with the 1.4 engine. To date, the run is already 200 thousand kilometers. My car has exceeded the lifespan declared by the manufacturer. I want to say that my car is still like new. Sometimes on the track I accelerate to 150-160 km / h, but in rare cases. On average outside the city - 110 km / h no more. I change the oil every 8 thousand km - the car works for me in difficult operating conditions. I can say with confidence that the resource of the 2009 Kia Sid 1.4 engine is at least 250 thousand km.
  3. Edward, Moscow. In 2011, he became the owner of a KIA Ceed 2 with a 1.4 engine paired with mechanics. Mileage today - 240 thousand km. I drive mostly on the country road, I have such a job. I use the brand of oil recommended by the manufacturer, I refuel with 95th Lukoil gasoline.
  4. Valentin, Novokuznetsk. Three years departure for Kia Sid, and then sold. My wife asked me to give her the car, but I didn’t want to mess around in the garage every weekend, as the frequent breakdowns after 150 thousand kilometers. I changed the timing chain and for one clutch, tie rods and tips, the steering wheel did not obey before, after they changed the bushing in the steering rack, it seems that the problem was gone, but there was no desire to do this further

The engine has a long resource, it can “pass” more than 180 thousand km without much difficulty. Poor quality fuel, or the driver’s negligent attitude towards the car and ignoring the maintenance procedure, can provoke a serious breakdown.

Engine 1.6 G4FC

  1. Stanislav, Chelyabinsk. Personally, my opinion is that the resource of the power unit depends on its technical component. For example, the 1.6-liter version does not have hydraulic lifters, it is lighter by 15 kg, which is important in modern realities. The fewer parts, the longer the life of the engine. Analogues with rollers and pomp, timing belt lose in terms of reliability. The chain was replaced after 120 thousand km, that is, after 4 years of operation, since I wind about 30 thousand km a year, well, I changed consumables, no more repair costs! The engine resource of the Kia Sid 1.6 2008, in my experience, is more than 200 thousand.
  2. Egor, Yekaterinburg. The engine is 1.6 gasoline, it has already wound 92 thousand, the flight is normal. Do not believe the conflicting information that is being pumped up on the Internet around the KIA Ceed. Reliable and quality car, change the oil on time, and there will be no difficulties. Virtually everything depends on the driver, if you have a head on your shoulders, the car will pass 250-300 thousand, if not, then after 50 thousand capital will be required.
  3. Matvey, Cheboksary. Bought new car in the showroom in 2011. What I immediately noticed was the knocks in the suspension, and they appeared after about 6 months of operation. The master said that the shock absorbers were not pumped at the factory, what that means, to be honest, I don’t know, but I really didn’t like the fact of negligence. A year later, he sold the car and bought a Hyundai Accent.
  4. Kirill, Vladivostok. One thing I don't like - weak suspension. There are practically no complaints about the motor, but the quality of the connecting links of the machine leaves much to be desired. Today, the mileage is 210 thousand, I have had a Kia Sid since 2011. I was generally satisfied with the car, replacing consumables, 5W-40 oil, changing the timing chain, front struts.

The 1.6-liter version is best suited to those who prefer, in addition to daily trips, also long-distance trips. The motor is characterized by good dynamics, reliability and technological perfection. The actual resource indicator exceeds the certified by the manufacturer. According to the reviews of the owners, KIA Ceed 1.6 “walks” about 250 thousand km before the first overhaul.

Cars Kia Rio quite popular in Russia. These are one of the most budgetary foreign cars that are available for sale from good choice configurations. Gasoline engines 1.6 Kia Rio are installed on cars with both manual and automatic transmissions. Proper operation a car with such an engine will allow it to travel more than 200 thousand kilometers. Within the framework of this article, we will consider what are the features of the 1.6 Kia Rio engine, how long is its service life, and how to properly operate cars with such engines.

Table of contents:

Engine characteristics 1.6 Kia Rio

The Kia 1.6 car engine, which is installed on the Rio model and a number of others, is made of aluminum alloy, with the exception of steel cylinder liners. The motor, with its small volume, the motor has a declared power of 123 hp, which is enough to accelerate a car with a not very heavy body to 100 km / h in 10-11 seconds.

Motor problems 1.6 Kia Rio

The 1.6 engine is quite unpretentious in maintenance, and it is practically devoid of serious typical problems. Most often, repair of the Kia Rio motor is required due to the breakdown of some individual parts, as a result of their long continuous operation or the presence of a factory defect.

From typical problems engines 1.6 can be noted "floating" speed idle move. Such a problem on the Kia Rio took place due to the software. In modern car models manufactured after 2017, this problem is solved by default. If a car of earlier years of production is purchased, and work with the ECU firmware was not carried out after it was released from the factory, it is possible that you may encounter a similar malfunction.

Please note: Idling may also appear due to the poor quality of the fuel used.

To minimize the chance of engine failure Kia car Rio, you need to pay attention to the following points when using it:

Engine resource 1.6 Kia Rio

In books about technical operation Kia Rio you can find information that the resource of a car engine is 250-300 thousand kilometers, and the guaranteed service life is indicated at 200 thousand kilometers.

In fact, in urban realities, the Kia Rio 1.6 engine works without failures for 150-180 thousand kilometers. After that, he may begin to “crumble”. The fact is that the actual mileage for urban conditions is not always indicated on the dashboard of a car. The car often has to stand in a traffic jam, so instead of the declared 250-300 thousand, it is able to cover less kilometers.

Note: automatic boxes gears in Kia Rio most often fail before problems with the engine begin. Therefore, if you want to buy a car that can drive 150-180 thousand kilometers in the city, it is better to choose models with manual transmission.

For most owners of Kia cee'd, the engine resource, or rather its numerical characteristics, is an important issue. Of course, without wheels, but with a motor, the car will not move. But any motorist understands that even with wheels, but without a motor, it will not be possible to go far either. For Kia Sid, according to the developer, the engine resource is about 180 thousand kilometers. How good is that? If we compare only the numerical characteristics, then for Sid it is certainly better than for domestic cars with a resource of 150 thousand. But in comparison with the guarantee of cars of European automakers, it is possible and not enough. At the same time, it is worth realizing that the actual life of the engine significantly depends on several important parameters:

  • road condition;
  • operating mode;
  • fuel quality;
  • quality of lubricants;
  • driving style of the driver.

Road condition and mode of operation

As you know, Kia Sid was created based on the operation of its European motorists. Accordingly, the resource indicator of 180 thousand kilometers or 5 years was calculated based on the condition of European roads. Comparison of their coverage with what we have is usually not comforting. In a large city, the roads are, of course, better than outside. Therefore, the engine has every chance to last longer. out of town relatively good road has a strange property to deteriorate sharply. Potholes, potholes or even pits appear on it. Overcoming all these obstacles, of course, you have to increase the engine speed, thereby achieving more power. As a result, a significant acceleration in the wear of the suspension and power unit.

Despite the best quality of urban roads, the engine life can still be reduced. The usual principle of movement in urban areas is short distances, but with a large number of stops. While waiting for traffic to start at a traffic light or in a traffic jam, the entire vehicle is stationary and the engine continues to run at low revs. As a result, wear of its components occurs due to an insufficient amount of incoming lubricant.

To increase the resource of the Kia Sid engine, it will be optimal to try to operate it at average rates for the load and the number of revolutions.

Fuel and lubricant quality

Any car owner who loves his car knows that it is better to use only the best (in extreme cases, good) quality fuel to power it. In theory, everything is great. In reality, this is often not the case. In pursuit of profit, the owners of small gas stations often do not pay attention to the quality of the purchased products. Price is their priority. As a result, refueling at such a filling station with fuel with the recommended octane rating, we can fill the tank with lower quality fuel. This will lead to rapid detonation of gasoline in the combustion chamber. Accordingly, the piston rings and the pistons themselves will require frequent replacement. At the same time, the vibration load increases and, naturally, the service life of the Kia cee’d power unit decreases. It is worth recalling that low-quality fuel may contain both water and foreign impurities. Getting into the engine and fuel system, they can cause corrosion and breakage of parts.

Sometimes finances are difficult. In such a situation, some drivers try to save on lubricants. The calculation is usually based on the fact that "tomorrow I will change." But as a result, the car is operated for a long time with low-quality oils. Is it worth talking in this case about the duration of the life of the engine and other parts? For Kia Sid, the use of antifreeze of dubious quality is also dangerous. When filling in such a coolant, it is worth remembering that you are putting an extremely risky experiment on your car. Any malfunction of the cooling and lubrication systems will lead to rapid wear of parts. In order to increase the life of the Kia Sid engine, it is necessary to regularly monitor the degree of contamination of the fuel filter.

Driving style

Approximately half of Kia owners Sid (and especially pro_cee'd) prefer dynamic high-speed driving. In this case, the car engine often runs at high speeds. It is worth noting that most of these motorists live in cities. Accordingly, the car operates in the "short trip - long stop" mode. When stopped at a traffic light, drivers have to slow down the engine speed and then increase it sharply in order to overtake the “turtles”. As a result, there is another reason to reduce the service life of the power unit.

Engine Kia Sid 1.6 liter G4FC has become one of the most popular in our country. The atmospheric unit can be found on other Korean models. For example, the motor was installed on the Hyundai Solaris or Kia Rio. The engine turned out to be extremely successful and reliable. The Kia Ceed power unit has a huge number of modifications of different capacities.

In Russia, you can meet several generations at once and restyling Kia Ceed 1.6. True essential constructive changes did not happen with a gasoline atmospheric engine. The in-line 4-cylinder 16-valve engine with a chain drive and a CVVT variable valve timing system has been upgraded several times.

Engine Kia Sid 1.6 liter

An engine from the Gamma series with a volume of 1.6 liters and a power of 122 appeared on the first generation Kia Ceed. Based on an aluminum cylinder block. The motor does not have hydraulic lifters. Pretty reliable chain drive. Initially, a motor with a phase shifter was installed on the Sid only on the intake shaft. But on the new generation, a version of the Gamma II engine appeared, where the phase change system is already on both camshafts. This made it possible to increase the power to 130 hp. and make the exhaust more environmentally friendly, which is very useful against the backdrop of ever-tightening standards. At the same time, another modification of the same engine was brought to the market, but with GDI direct fuel injection, which already develops 135 hp.

The motor is extremely light precisely because of the extensive use of aluminium. In addition to the block itself, the block head in the motor, a special aluminum pastel is used, where crankshaft.

With all its advantages, an all-aluminum engine also has a number of disadvantages. Firstly, the Kia Sid 1.6 engine is very afraid of overheating. After all, a violation of the normal temperature regime leads to deformation of the aluminum alloy. With severe overheating, not only the head of the block suffers, but also the aluminum pastel where the crankshaft is placed. If the cylinder head can be polished a little, then here is the deformation of the pastel, this is the death of the motor. Another problem is oil starvation, which can also lead to serious consequences, so you need to regularly monitor the oil level on a Kia Sid engine with high mileage. Insufficient pressure oil will eventually lead to interruptions in the operation of the phase shifters.

Timing drive Kia Sid 1.6 liters

The Kia Ceed 1.6 timing gear drive is quite reliable and does not require intervention for a long time. With intensive use, already by 100 thousand kilometers, the chain is stretched. If you bought on secondary market LED with high mileage and ringing noise from under the hood, then you need to prepare to replace the chain, tensioners, dampers and sprockets. The work is very time-consuming and requires professional skills of a car mechanic.

Next, let's talk about technical specifications 1.6 liter Kia Sid engine. However, taking into account the mass of various modifications, we will focus on its basic version of the 2006-2007 model Gamma G4FC with one phase shifter on the intake shaft.

Malfunctions and repair of the G4FA 1.4 l engine.

The G4FA engine belongs to the Gamma series, which was released in 2006 and replaced the outdated Alpha engines. The Gamma includes a number of engines, the most famous of which are the 1.4 liter G4FA and the 1.6 liter G4FA. G4FC, assembled on a single cylinder block, but we will focus on the younger representative.
The engine is based on an aluminum cylinder block with cast-iron liners, in which a crankshaft with a piston stroke of 75 mm, long connecting rods, pistons with a kind of displacer and a height of 26.9 mm are installed with an offset of 10 mm.
This block is covered by an aluminum 16-valve head with two camshafts. The Solaris / Rio 1.4 engine is equipped with a variable valve timing system, but only on the intake shaft, in addition, there are no hydraulic lifters on the G4FA engine, so valve clearances must be adjusted every 95,000 km if the situation requires it.
Compared to older Alpha series motors, the G4FA uses a timing chain with a tensioner that does not require maintenance throughout its official life. Indeed, in practice it is quite reliable.
A single-stage ordinary receiver is installed at the inlet, without various length change systems.

In addition to well-known cars Hyundai Solaris and Kia Rio this engine It is also installed on Kia Cee'd II, i20 and other vehicles in a slightly derated version - by 100 hp.
On the basis of the G4FA motor block, a 1.6 liter engine of the Gamma series - G4FC was also developed. Later, other close motors appeared: G4FG, G4FD, G4FJ and L4FC.
The release of the engine was discontinued in 2018 and is now being replaced by a 1.4-liter version from the Kappa family.

Problems and disadvantages of KIA-Hyundai G4FA engines

Many are interested in which manufacturer of the Hyundai Solaris / Kia Rio engine, and so it is produced by the Beijing Hyundai Motor Company, but the engine is Chinese, but do not rush to shout “garbage / fall apart / junk ...”, let's take a clear look at the shortcomings and main malfunctions of the G4FA, and then let's conclude:

1. Knocking in the Rio or Solaris engine. If your warm-up knock disappears, then most likely it is the timing chain that makes noise (in 90% of cases) and there is nothing to worry about, if it is also heard when it is hot, then the problem may be in unadjusted valves, they can also be adjusted incorrectly on factory. Contact the service and put them in order.
2. Noise. Sounds reminiscent of clicks, clatter, chirping, etc., are normal work nozzles and otherwise they do not know how.
3. Oil leaks. Not often, however, the valve cover gasket is not perfect and traces of oil are signs of this. Change the gasket and drive on without problems.
4. RPM fluctuates, uneven operation of the Rio/Solaris engine. The problem is solved by cleaning the throttle valve, if it did not help then fresh firmware.
5. Vibration on idling. The cause of this phenomenon is dirty throttle valve or candles. We clean the damper, change the candles and enjoy the pleasant operation of the motor. At strong vibrations look at the engine mounts.
6. Vibrations at medium speeds. This happens at about 3000 rpm and no one knows what is the reason, official dealers Hyundai-Kia talk about engine features and rightly so. At these speeds, the G4FA motor comes into resonance and, thanks to the peculiar design of the engine mount, all the vibrations are on your steering wheel and wherever possible. Give the gas or release the pedal, the motor will go out of resonance and the vibrations will disappear.
7. Whistle. A sore subject, the whistle appears due to the weak tension of the alternator belt, change the tensioner pulley and everything disappears.
8. Eats oil. The problem has been with motors since 2011.
, these power plants not a very reliable catalyst, and due to poor-quality fuel (especially for regions), it tends to fail after 50 thousand km. In the process of its death, ceramic dust enters the cylinders and forms scuffs in the cylinders. As a result, we have high oil consumption and the need to overhaul the block sleeve. Solution: either pour very good fuel, or knock out the catalyst.
This problem does not affect the first engines with exhaust manifold"ram's horn".

Despite the declared motor resource (at least 180 thousand km), over the years of operation, these motors have shown themselves very well, they have a resource of at least 300 thousand km. The main thing is timely maintenance and the use of good oil.

Engine number G4FA

The engine number is stamped on the cylinder block near the junction of the gearbox and flywheel.

Engine tuning Hyundai-Kia G4FA

Chip tuning G4FA

One of the fastest, easiest and cheapest ways to increase power is to recalibrate the engine. The offices promise 110-115 hp after the chip, try it for the sake of experiment, but don't expect significant changes. It's better to see what sensible things can be done with your motor.

G4FA 1.6

A more effective tuning option is to increase the volume of the G4FA to 1.6 liters. You don't need to change the cylinder block to pull off this scam, it's the same as on the 1.6L engine, the heads are the same except for the intake camshaft.
To assemble the stroker you will need a G4FC crankshaft with 85.4mm stroke, G4FC short connecting rods and G4FC pistons (they are recessed to reduce compression). After installing all this, you need to flash the ECU. For a full G4FC conversion, add a G4FC intake camshaft to that.
All this will give a typical 123 hp.

To go even further and get 130+ hp, you need to install a variable geometry intake manifold from a G4FG. To do this, you will have to spend a little effort and money on the receiver, the VIS system control unit and the probe from the G4FG with a guide.
If we are talking about the G4FG, then its intake camshaft will be meaner and, with certain modifications, it will fit on your engine.
To all of the above, you can add a cold inlet, a normal 4-2-1 spider and an exhaust on a 51 mm pipe. After tuning, all this stuff will give you about 140 hp.
