A unique SUV with your own hands. Do-it-yourself jeeps - successful projects of Russian craftsmen Between past and present

"What it is?" - drivers, passengers, and pedestrians are surprised when they meet a huge unusual jeep on the road. And almost everyone turns around to follow the mechanical giant. Many try to catch up with him in a car or come closer in the parking lot. And all in order to understand - how is this car made? But the exact answer to this question can only be given by the owner of an amazing miracle of technology. Khabarovsk businessman Pavel Mashinistov assembled an SUV with his own hands, connecting Suzuki, UAZ and special equipment.

Idea for fishing

–Answering the question: where to buy one? There can only be one - mine! This is a piece copy, there is no other like it in nature. But it’s not for sale: I made it for myself, for convenience and for the soul, why should I part with it? Paul laughs.

The idea to create a comfortable and passable SUV came to Pavel Mashinistov about six years ago. An avid fisherman and hunter, one day he thought about what a car should be that would easily overcome any impassability and at the same time not create problems for the owner. As Pavel says, “so that you don’t have to walk through the mud behind a tractor, pulling out a stuck jeep.” Light but stable, powerful but not overly fuel efficient, durable, comfortable… and not too expensive.

Cars corresponding to the above requirements at that time did not exist in nature. And then Pavel decided to make the car of his dreams. with my own hands! Fortunately, the skills for this were quite enough. An auto mechanic by education, Pavel has worked with various vehicles all his life, ranging from cars to special vehicles.

Deciding not to shelve the idea, Pavel soon bought an inexpensive 1993 Suzuki Escudo, the lightest and most compact of the jeeps. And the work on creating a giant car began to boil!

-First of all, I took up the body, lifted it from the frame. Then he installed bridges with gearboxes from UAZ, a rigid differential lock and reinforced axle shafts. This is so that the total load on the wheels is reduced, and at the same time, the transfer of torque falls on the wheel that has the best grip on the ground. The car has a permanent four-wheel drive. To improve cross-country ability, I replaced the “native” 1.6-liter engine with a more powerful, two-liter one, but also from Suzuki Escudo and a gearbox. The weight of the jeep is only 1900 kg, this motor is enough for him. But thanks to this ratio, the fuel consumption of my all-terrain vehicle, despite its impressive size, is not at all large - about 13 liters per 100 km on asphalt. Wheels - tires measuring 120 by 60 cm and 21-inch wheels were specially ordered in Moscow. They were very expensive. Typically, such rather big wheels are intended for special equipment that storms completely impassable off-road. I couldn't handle all the work alone. Friends helped: with the body, and then with the design of the wings - Zinovy Kravtsov, with transmission work - Andrey Timofeev.

In front of his “giant”, Pavel placed a winch designed for 3 tons, with which the jeep can pull itself out or help other cars get out. True, larger cars than the Nissan Terrano, light homemade all-terrain vehicle pull out will not undertake, otherwise he risks getting damaged. On the roof, Pavel made a hatch, but not just as an element of tuning, but for convenience: during outdoor activities, it is convenient to view the surroundings from it. For comfort, the design of the wings also serves - the coating is waterproof. If something happens on the road, then in a special box attached at the back instead of a spare wheel, there is everything you need to fix the breakdown on the spot with your own hands.

"Wherever I look, I go there"

As a result, this unique car - a square with giant wheels - cost its owner about 700 thousand rubles. Compared to factory, especially new jeeps, this is inexpensive, but in terms of its qualities, a home-made miracle, in Pavel’s opinion, is ahead of all “ready-made” options. The man managed to embody all his ideas in this car.

In March 2010, for the first time, an SUV drove onto the roads of the Khabarovsk Territory. Since then, the giant has been driving, as a rule, outside the city; for everyday life, Pavel has a Toyota Camry. A jeep is used for hunting and fishing trips. And here he has no equal.

– Both in summer and in winter, where I look at it, I go there. Though in soft mud, even in wetlands, even in snowdrifts. The main thing is that there are no trees ahead, and everything else is not an obstacle. My car will easily pass where even a tank gets stuck. What can I say, she can swim on water, if, of course, not too deep. Accelerates quickly, 120 km / h definitely rides, but I didn’t check further: I don’t have it for racing.

Without attention self-made transport does not remain even in the remote taiga, and there will always be an interested fisherman. What can we say about trips around the city!

Everyone is looking, taking pictures, interested. It happens that even the traffic cops stop the documents to check, and along the way they will also ask a couple of questions. And especially the drivers. "Selling? Where did you buy? How much do wheels cost? Where to do the same tuning? People often ask: how did you register? There were no difficulties with this. The all-terrain vehicle is registered in the traffic police in the most usual way and passes technical inspection perfectly. Its width is only 230 cm, and in order to be in the category of agricultural machinery, you need 280 cm, all units are standard.

And sometimes Pavel is asked: how to assemble this yourself? And here the conversation, of course, drags on: craftsmen always have something to talk about.

Julia Mikhaleva

It seems unbelievable, but from the most ordinary passenger car it is possible to make a real jeep with your own hands. No kidding! Let's see how this is possible in principle.

The frame of the machine consists of 3 cross beams and 2 longitudinal spars, which are located with some convergence.

The latter have a very complex cross section, and are based on two 0.32 mm water pipes welded together. A box of 2 L-shaped steel sheets is also attached to the pipes by welding from above. Typically, the height of the spar section can vary from 120 mm in the central part of the frame to 80 mm at the ends. The square cross beams are welded from 2mm thick steel sheet, and the front beam doubles as a spare oil tank. It has filler and drain holes with plugs. Additional rigidity to the frame, in addition to the crossbars, is given by 2 diaphragms, which are bent from a steel sheet.

Make yourself a Jeep for only $600? Easily.

The engine, together with the gearbox, was borrowed from the VAZ-2101 car. Both oily and air filters slightly redone.

Chassis and transmission used from the GAZ-69, but with the use of some individual parts from the UAZ-46E. The cardan located between the transfer case and the gearbox is homemade. But the cardan half-coupling with a cross in it is serial, from the GAZ-69 car.

Instead of the springs of both axles, the rear leaf springs of the GAZ-24 Volga are used, but to improve the softness of the ride, you can use home-made earrings that are 20 mm longer than on the Volga. Shock absorbers are also taken from the GAZ-24. The springs themselves are installed parallel to the frame spars, i.e. at an angle to the axis of the vehicle. But this does not impair their work in any way.

The body can be made of steel sheet with a thickness of 1.0-1.2 mm. It consists entirely of relatively small panels, which are connected by spot welding.

For the manufacture of doors, sheet steel 1.4 mm thick is used, and the rest of the body is assembled from panels 1.2 mm thick; mm steel is suitable for the manufacture of the front fenders. When fitting windshield punch can be used. The panels are joined by spot welding.

Locks and door hinges can be homemade, although using ready-made ones - say, from a Zhiguli, is also not bad.

The cockpit windows are borrowed from the VAZ-2121 Niva. For the installation of which an effective solution was found: a steel corner 1.2-2 mm thick is welded under the rubber seal around the window perimeter.

Bumpers are rolled from 1.6 mm steel sheet.

We propose to make the hood from steel panels covered by a frame made of thin-walled pipe 0.16 mm around the entire perimeter. In front of the windshield, you can provide a thin foam pad for which the wipers are removed.

It is convenient to take the steering control from the GAZ-69, and brake system- from GAZ-24. Headlights - motorcycle, from "Chezeta". Their inner pair must be raised by 10 mm so that the front of the car takes on a completely finished look. Direction indicators and sidelights - homemade. Rear lights from "Moskvich-2140".

The gas tank of the machine is an 80 l container made of steel sheet, reinforced between 2 rear cross beams on the frame.

The frame of the tent is welded from 0.25 mm water pipes. Under the roof there are four much thinner crossbars, three of which are removable.

The front seats of the car belong to the GAZ-24 Volga car. But they are a little modified. You can do the back yourself.

In conclusion, I would like to say about operational data. Probably, the main advantage of the jeep is its excellent cross-country ability. Homemade cars even drifts of snow are no barrier.

Instruction

When building an SUV, be guided by the requirements developed over the years by lovers of extreme tourism. Real SUV should have: high ground clearance(not less than 220 mm), high-torque engine (better) with protection against water hammer, power steering, shock absorber on the steering trapezium, wheels of 31 or 33 inches, differential locks, powerful power thresholds and bumpers, powerful tow hooks, winch, protection of units with sides of the bottom, a large roof rack, a radio station and navigation.

Start with wheels. 70% of a car's off-road capabilities depend on tire size and tread pattern. Besides, big wheels save the suspension from strong shocks, allow you to get out of the cargo or tractor track, increase. When choosing tires according to the tread pattern, be guided by the size of the lugs. In most cases, when installed on an SUV big wheels body lift required.

Do a suspension lift. If the SUV is frame, raise the body above the frame by installing oversized spacers. Ordinary hockey pucks can be used as spacers. At the same time, the geometric cross-country ability will improve and it will be possible to install large wheels. Do not forget that this will also increase the center of gravity.

Carry out hydraulic protection of the engine. This is necessary not only for, but also for the motor. For the procedure, it comes down to installing a snorkel - a pipe for air intake at roof level. For a gasoline engine, additionally protect the ignition system and spark plugs from water. If you do not want to mess around, get ready-made kits. At self-manufacturing snorkel, try to use as high quality materials as possible. In this case, the pipe should have a sufficiently large cross section and have no more than 2-3 elbows. Its fastening must withstand blows from oncoming tree branches.

Additionally protect the transmission from water: breather valves in axles, transfer case and the gearbox, put them in good condition and bring them out with plastic tubes as high as possible. Carry out sealing of a mouth of a gas tank and the engine. Put protection on the bottom under the engine, gearbox, gas tank, steering racks. Take aluminum or steel as the material.

The steering shock absorber (damper), which protects the steering wheel from impacts transmitted from the wheels, is standardly installed on SUVs such as Defender or Mercedes G class. For self-installation of this, purchase a double-acting shock absorber, calculate the attachment points on the steering trapezoid and secure it with high quality.

Power bumpers and sills that can withstand jacking up an SUV from any position can be purchased from companies involved in OFF-ROAD tuning, or you can make it yourself. In the manufacture of such products, it is important to observe certain subtleties. Therefore, if you want to make these parts yourself, be sure to consult with professionals. Power bumpers must have powerful towing hooks (eyes) and be welded directly to the frame. The front bumper must be designed to mount a winch.

Establish mechanisms of blockings of interaxal and interwheel differentials. They are sold in ready-made kits and are designed to be installed to the differential housing. Branded mechanisms work more reliably and more clearly than regular ones. The main disadvantage of locks is the ability to damage the transmission if you forget to turn them off after overcoming off-road.

Put it on the roof forwarding trunk. This is an indispensable item for off-road travel. The trunk can be welded independently from pipes of the desired size. Also, install a GPS navigation system in the car so as not to get lost on the ground. If you plan to travel not alone, but as part of several cars, set the CB radio station to 27 MHz

Homemade SUV

Conceiving a car for traveling, the author decided to put in it constructive simplicity, reliability in operation, unpretentiousness and accessibility in maintenance. When choosing the layout, I settled on the “jeep” scheme, however, its version differs from the classic one in that it has only one drive axle - the rear one, for simplicity.

Outwardly, the "jeep" looks smaller than, say, LuAZ, although it is not inferior to it in terms of interior and trunk dimensions. This was achieved, firstly, by a dense “packing” of the engine compartment and, secondly, by the external placement of a piece of luggage (on the roof), a spare wheel (on the left side) and a canister (on the back). Gross weight- 900 kg.

Simplifications, however, did not affect driving performance car, it has already traveled hundreds of thousands of kilometers. Every year it made trips from Yerevan to Moscow and back. Including with a homemade trailer-dacha weighing 500 kgf. Participation in the rally greatly lengthened this journey. However, the design passed the test with honor on the roads of Karelia and the Kola Peninsula. The "Jeep" confidently walked both along the highway (at a speed of up to 120 km/h) and along a broken track.

In his native Armenia, he climbed on it to a height of up to 3000 m above sea level, overcoming impassability, scree, slopes up to 30 °.

The hardships of the journey are easily endured in a comfortable and cozy car cabin. In hot weather, any of the four side windows can be moved to let in fresh air. Or, if that's not enough, open the sunroof.

There are many other simple and original design solutions in the car. Here, for example, is how the body is arranged. It consists of a space frame and outer skin. The frame, designed for significant torsional and bending loads, is welded from steel pipes of square and rectangular sections. Less loaded hood, doors and rear window are made of channels, tees and corners connected with rivets.

The floor in the cabin and the lining of the hood are made of corrugated duralumin sheets 2 mm thick. Body cladding - from smooth sheets 1.5 mm thick. They are attached to the frame with M5 countersunk screws. The joints of the sheets are hidden by rubber and metal overlays.

The inside of the cabin is lined with a thin layer of foam rubber and soft plastic. Triplex. glazing, as well as doors, are equipped with rubber seals from cars of the Volga Automobile Plant. The floor is covered with rubber and synthetic mats. All this reduces the noise level in the cabin and prevents the penetration of dust.

The instrument panel and glove box are homemade. The front seats with backs reclining forward are "Zhiguli". The rear passenger seat, designed for three people, is homemade and has a fixed back. Behind him, below, fuel tank with a capacity of 45 liters (from the "UAZ") with a neck brought out over rear bumper. Above the tank is an internal trunk. Access to it through the rear window.

The principle of "simplicity plus reliability" has extended to power plant: the engine and gearbox are taken together with the units serving them from the Zhiguli VAZ-2101. Only paper oil filter replaced by a cheaper inertial one from ZAZ-968.

The rear axle, taking into account the possibility of towing a trailer, was taken from the VAZ-2102 and slightly modified: the lower support cups of the suspension springs and the brackets for attaching the upper jet rods were removed. Instead, two U-shaped suspension pads are welded to the bridge beam.

The springs are used from the front suspension of the UAZ-469 car. Each package consists of five sheets coated with graphite grease prior to assembly. They are suspended from the body frame in the region of the rear spars.

In addition to springs, there are telescopic shock absorbers. With rubber-metal hinges of the tanks, they, like on the Zhiguli, are attached to the brackets of the rear axle, and with casing hinges - to the fingers on the intermediate cross member of the frame.

Torque from engine to rear axle transmitted cardan shaft from the "Volga" GAZ-21. The choice of this particular type is due to the fact that it is simpler and more reliable and does not require special care.

As for the front axle, it is completely homemade. Designing it, Hopshanosov was guided by his favorite principle of "simplicity plus reliability". The line of reasoning went something like this: front axle very responsible unit. It provides traffic control, the “health” of the entire car depends on its “well-being”. Therefore, the fewer parts and moving joints in it, the better.

Three years of operation have shown: the decision was made right. Whatever stones and potholes fell under the front wheels - all for nothing. Here's how the bridge works.

Its main element is a thick-walled seamless steel pipe 060 and 1100 mm long. Suspension pads, shock absorber mounting pins and bearing pads of front suspension ball bearings are welded to it.

When assembling the front axle, the camber must be taken into account, so the support platforms were attached to the pipe in a certain order. First, the lower ones were welded and (also lower) ball bearings of the swivel pins of the "Zhiguli" wheels were screwed to them. The upper platforms were first attached to the corresponding ball bearings of the swivel pins, and then welded to the pipe. Moreover, the camber angle was 0°20'-0°30', which corresponds to a 2-3 mm difference between the dimensions taken from the edges of the wheel rims to the vertical (the pipe is horizontal in this case); installed with a plumb bob.

The front axle is attached to the body frame in the same way as the rear axle - with springs (four sheets in a package) using bolts and clamps and telescopic shock absorbers, the rods of which rest against special brackets on the front spars.

The toe-in is regulated by a steering rod (from the Volga GAZ-21).

The control device of the all-terrain vehicle is also very simple and reliable. Turning the steering wheel, the driver, through two shafts and two hinges (from the ZIL-130) located under the hood, acts on the steering mechanism mounted on the front beams in front of the radiator grille. Further, the effort adjustable draft is transmitted to the double (welded of two) lever of the right rotary pin, and from it by an adjustable rod - to the lever of the left rotary pin.

The brake system, interior heater, headlights and electrical wiring were borrowed from the Zhiguli VAZ-21011, the taillights were from the Skif trailer, and the windshield wipers and control devices were used from the UAZ-469 car.

To build a real jeep, you do not need to be the owner of a huge factory with excellent technological and modern machines. At least, this is proved by the success of Russian craftsmen, who can easily make an SUV with their own hands. And such a jeep will easily overcome obstacles that are beyond the power of even expensive ones. production models crossovers and more passable equipment.

A lot of videos have been shot and an incredible amount of texts have been recorded about how to make an excellent passable technique with your own hands. All this is freely available on the Internet, and we invite you to take a look at the most incredible creations of Russian craftsmen.

Capable of exploits jeep based on Oka

The last car that comes to mind when the terms SUV or crossover is mentioned is the small and full of Oka factory problems. At one time, this car became a bestseller only because of its low cost. Today, car owners who previously purchased this miracle of technology are redoing their vehicles into real SUVs exclusively with their own hands.

Often, an attempt to make a crossover out of this car ends in a complete fiasco, because the body is not designed for serious loads. But those people who can create a real miracle with their own hands produce good SUVs with the following characteristics:

Completely modified suspension that allows you to put big wheels;
tires with high tread and a variety of other ways to increase ground clearance;
all kinds of body changes to make the car more like a crossover;
sometimes there is an engine replacement, since it is impossible to make a passable jeep on a build platform.

They also produce a variety of winches and other tools with their own hands, which make it possible to bring the once helpless Oka closer to the title of a traditional SUV with cross-country ability. Interestingly, on the basis of this car, amphibious vehicles are often produced that can move on water.

Caste of self-made jeeps based on GAZ 66 - Russian Hummers

If the Americans believe that only they can assemble an incredibly passable and hardy military Hummer H1, then they are greatly mistaken. In Russia, such cars are assembled in garages by lovers of DIY SUVs. There are many videos that show the process of assembling such a car based on the GAZ 66 military truck. This is one of the most successful developments of the GAZ concern in its entire history, so the design of the base of this car is suitable for such purposes.

Of course, the result is impressive, but it is not always possible to create the proper reliability. Several of these Hummers have compact crossover patency, but some options have serious advantages:

Excellent cross;
clearance of a military truck;
durable engine that cannot be broken;
huge traction force;
light weight and increased power make the machine unstoppable.

Such hand-made features can surprise a person far from the world of cars. But specialists manage to assemble incredibly technically successful cars in their garage and do it professionally. I wonder why not a single Russian can do this automobile concern with their technical capabilities?

A unique video about a DIY jeep

If you dream of a crossover, do not rush to lose heart about the high prices for cars in this class. You can assemble not only a crossover, but also a real jeep from the materials that are at hand. For example, the heroes of the next video did not really alter the design of the latest military GAZ 66, building a wonderful SUV out of it, and they did all the work exclusively with their own hands. Of course, the production and assembly process is the author's secret.

Summing up

If you want to assemble a car with your own hands and register it with the traffic police, then it is better not to start this process, because you will not be able to legalize the transport. SUVs and compact crossovers, created by garage craftsmen remain only a means for riding through the fields. This machine cannot be driven on public roads.

Nevertheless, the enthusiasm of the creators of such technology is growing by leaps and bounds. Every month there are new interesting materials with unimaginable alterations and homemade products.
