Steering can be of two types. The usual rail is simple and reliable, without any frills, with an adjustable spool. It knocks quietly after several years of operation, rarely flows, the electronics on it rarely fail.

The problems of adaptive control are much more expensive. And they happen more often. The price for easy parking and a very “sharp” steering wheel will be the high price of the rack itself, its servo failures and sensor failures. Most of the failures are eliminated purely by software, but sometimes diagnostics fail, so you have to change several nodes to eliminate the cause of the trouble. The latest updates of the control unit and quality service are highly recommended to service any, even the smallest, malfunctions of a machine with this type of steering.

Transmission

Oddly enough, but special troubles from this side can not be expected. More precisely, the costs are quite programmed. I already wrote about the six-speed ZF 6HP 26 / 6HP 28 in the review - it goes 100-150 thousand kilometers. But what happens next is not clear. If the oil was changed frequently, not “annealed”, the gas turbine linings were replaced in time, then it may take more, there are instances with a range of 250 thousand km in one hand and without signs of an imminent death. But more often a serious bulkhead, replacement of bushings, repair of mechatronics will be needed ...

If there are twitches during acceleration, and there are no errors in the transmission, then, most likely, at death, the gas turbine engine is blocked, but the box is clean. And if it twitches when switching, then, probably, the box will go to the “capital” right away. The reason is either wear or a missed oil level due to leaks in the sump, electrical harness seals or pump. In any case, the box will have wear on the bushings and dirt in the valve body, it will not last long even after topping up the oil. Increasing the cooling of an automatic transmission can extend its life, as well as frequent oil changes, once every 30-40 thousand kilometers. But this may not help the age box after the “first call”.

Newer eight-speed automatic transmissions look good so far, in any case, they are less common in repairs. But with runs already up to one hundred thousand kilometers, there are instances with complete wear of the friction clutches and a clogged mechatronics unit. And repair shops complain about the extremely lightweight design of the automatic transmission, which can be deformed during disassembly.

Motors

A common feature of all new families of BMW engines is the widespread use of plastic in critical components, high sensitivity to overheating and extremely intense thermal conditions. And also - complex control systems and a very high sensitivity to the quality of sensors and the operation of the electronic body kit of the motor.

Do not be surprised if you are regularly persuaded to replace the cap expansion tank, oil filter covers, temperature sensors and MAF, lambda and similar trifles. Sometimes it’s the resource’s fault, sometimes it’s reinsurance, but in any case, there will be a lot of trouble with automotive high-tech, especially if you don’t delve into the intricacies of maintenance, don’t wash the radiators and rely only on the warranty and the big name of the manufacturer.

I have already written about the motors of the old family N 62 and N 52 several times in reviews, and. The three-liter six of the N 52V30 series is quite a good motor against the general background, but the high thermostatting temperature, long service intervals and the insufficient quality of the “branded” oil contribute to coking of the oil, the occurrence of piston rings already in the second or third year of operation of the machine. By the age of five, an urban engine develops a persistent oil appetite, to eliminate which it will be necessary to sort it out or at least use decarbonization and pour only high-quality oil with a short replacement interval.

On restyling, engines with direct injection and turbocharging appeared. They added new ones to the old problems of the motors of the N 52 and N 62 series. First of all, this is the difficulty with injectors, which inevitably arises in all engines. There are many varieties of injectors, the old revisions were theoretically changed within the framework of revocable companies and under warranty, but far from all machines have done this. The injectors are leaking, failing, failing.

Consequences - to choose from: from water hammer when starting the car to uneven idle move, loss of traction and piston burnout. Plastic parts literally crumble on machines aged two to three years from high temperature. This is especially unpleasant for parts of the cooling system and electrical wiring - the number of engine failures increases several times. Surprisingly, the more forced "M-motor" has fewer problems due to the lower operating temperature. He has at least valve stem seals after a year, they don’t start pouring oil into the cylinders, and therefore, the “oil burner” does not grow so rapidly, it does not die and the catalyst does not overheat.

But in general, you have to pay for high performance in the most literal sense of the word. Because of the hellish working conditions, the turbines themselves do not withstand, the control systems fail, the oil supply hoses coke, and the plastic of the intake manifolds does not withstand.


Yes, and the notorious direct injection nozzles are already eight, not six, and they work in harsher conditions, and the piezoceramics are sensitive to temperature. Problems are delivered by the timing with two thin “bicycle” chains in the drive, which break and jump easily and naturally when worn.

In short, without serious intervention in the design, such a motor does not live happily ever after. Here, even lowering the operating temperature helps weakly due to the layout features. The oil thermostat does not cope with the oil temperature at all, and at the same time, the plastic parts of the oil system and pipe seals do not withstand.

A joy for owners of the X5 E70 are diesel engines, because the pre-styling models had a very reliable M57 diesel engine, which is deservedly considered one of their best engines in recent years. Although on machines with two turbines, oil leaks from the turbine supply pipes are frequent, and the resource of timing chains above 160 thousand km is no longer guaranteed, although it can reach up to 250 thousand. A particulate filter can be a hassle, it sometimes does not regenerate due to errors, short runs and engine underheating, it is expensive and it is also not removed for a penny.

The bypass roller bolts, despite the recall on this site, still sometimes break off. Yes, and the rest are typically available, but they are not so common.


On the other hand, the motor has a stable resource of the piston group, does not suffer from oil burns, has no problems with Velvtronic and Vanos, and does not coke oil. It pulls well and even withstands serious chip tuning, although many projects should use EGT sensors - they clearly exceed a reasonable temperature in the combustion chamber, which leads to a decrease in engine life.

The power spread in various versions is from 235 to 286 hp. with. - the "magic" number of the Bavarians. Cars with two turbines, of course, are much more difficult to maintain, but the total cost of operation against the background of gasoline counterparts will be small, especially if you pour good diesel fuel and regularly change fuel filters.

The more “fresh” motors of the N 57 series on restyling are completely new, but also quite strong. And even the piezo injectors here are distinguished by a calm character. The forcing margin is even higher. Due to the novelty, the motors do not cause much trouble, and, most likely, they will not differ much from the M 57 in operation.


What to choose?

Unlike the first X5 in the back of the E53, there are still enough “live” E70s, despite the more complex design of the electrics. If you buy a car after a caring owner who looked after it not according to the rules, but according to conscience, then there are good chances that the options with N 52, N 55, M 62 engines and diesel engines will be in full running condition.

As for other electrical and suspension chores, they are almost mandatory. Count on cheap operation a car of this class does not make sense, it regularly requires good service with a dealer scanner and skilled technicians, but so far the costs are well below the residual value of the machines.

The overall driving experience of the BMW X5 E70 is good, but not ideal, as in the Audi A8. The suspension, of course, is harsh, but pleasant, although what else can it be on a jeep. I am very pleased with how it holds the road - no buildup and roll in corners, in general, it goes like on rails. In the cabin of the BMW X5 E70, everything is according to the "BMW" canons, it is very comfortable and pleasing to the eye. The only thing that scared me at first was the parking sensors. When approaching something, it beeps wildly, but it can be turned off if desired. In general, I wanted to take 3.0 sd, but they were not yet on sale, but I don’t regret it at all, you can “anneal” on this one. The car has not yet driven even 1000 km (run-in 2000), so the engine did not turn much. Finally, I would like to say about the Russian diesel fuel - it is quite normal. Passed the run-in, I want to tell my impressions. About the dynamics - the BMW X5 E70 rides very well. Realistically, you don't need more. Although who cares. The car, in a good way, "becomes ugly before our eyes" in a split second. Any overtaking, any checkers, any maneuvers - all on the shoulder. Manageability is beyond praise. There is absolutely no impression that you drive a car weighing 2 tons. No rolls for you, no dives, no swings - I like it very much. Indeed, apparently it is not for nothing that they say about BMW that this is a driver's car. And there is. About comfort: at first, the BMW X5 E70 was harsh for me. Even too much. I took off the Run Flat tires - it got better. After running in - no complaints at all. Softened, right? But in general, the sound insulation is at its best, the engine rumbles pleasantly during acceleration, the wheels do not hiss. The reliability of the BMW X5 E70 has not yet been discussed. There seemed to be some noises with a "cold" suspension, I went to the dealer - they did not find anything. Tightened everything, it seems to have disappeared. This Saturday for the first time on this car went to the "dalnyak". To Tver there and back. I don’t know who spoke about the lack of track dynamics in this engine - I have never found this. Everything is fine. Rides - "be healthy" at any speed. Maybe after 150 km / h and that something negative happens there, which I strongly doubt, but at permissible speeds “until the rights are revoked”, it storms any overtaking at medium speeds. Yes, I don’t argue, there are better, but, frankly, I can’t put my mind to much more. For example, a friend bought from me, almost after me, the same one, only with a 4.0 d engine. I rolled. To "weaving" the real difference is 0.5 seconds. Up to 120 also, up to 140 again 0.5 seconds. The cost is 500 thousand more expensive. The tax is almost three times more, eats two or three liters more too. The diesel philosophy is lost. Still, they take diesel for any savings. But this is my purely personal opinion. The car was purchased in January 2014 and operated by me until May 2016. During this time, I drove about 80 thousand km on the BMW X5 E70. Bought for 100 thousand km sold for 180 thousand km. First of all, I want to say that this is a strong, powerful and beautiful car. Excellent handling, especially on the track, together with the dynamics gives significant advantages when making maneuvers. Often I had to travel long distances, where I felt all these advantages. The salon is quite spacious and functional, high-quality finishing materials. Probably the only minus of the cabin is a creaky interior, but after some time you don’t notice it. This personal opinion is now a bit about facts and figures. Of course, like any other car of this class, the BMW X5 requires attention and corresponding costs. For the period of car ownership, 2.5 years, serious problems it was not with him, and it was especially encouraging that there were no unexpected breakdowns, with the exception of the wipers (the relay in the fuse box went off). The pump flew, but it persistently buzzed for 5 months, and I knew about this problem, but my hands did not reach. I also changed the lower transverse levers: work 3825, spare parts for 5500 per lever (not like the original). These are 2015 prices. There are no other checks. But just before the sale, I changed the ball joints - they were original in 2000. In addition to consumables (oils, filters, brake discs, pads), nothing else was done in the BMW X5 E70, for all the time one taillight in the tailgate burned out, it is diode, so it changes entirely. Now about the expense. For me, this really turned out to be a problem and one of the reasons for selling this car. The quality of the interior of the BMW X5 E70 is excellent, but ascetic. If you want expensive, rich - you in Mercedes. In BMW, everything is different: perfect ergonomics, nothing creaked anywhere in 4 years, except for rubbed skin on a jeans back. Now about the suspension - the song. Nothing broke for 120 thousand, I only changed the stabilizer bushings, and it’s my fault - I’m driving from the dacha, something is tapping on the right rear wheel. I never pressed it to the end, even when overtaking over 140 on the highway, it was enough for the eyes. But in the winter, I felt "slippery". The fact is that the car weighs 2.5 tons, but the engine for 300 horses shoots it very evil. It feels like a constant skid or demolition, scary. More than 140 on a snowy track has never been accelerated.

Changed without question. The second warranty case was very tricky. Headlight washers got out and did not want to climb back. It looked very strange - they changed both for something, although only one failed. In general, I had no more questions with the operation of the car. He did all maintenance according to the regulations, changed the oil in the box for 70 thousand. After the end of the warranty, I left the dealer and began to serve in the service, where I was sure that the oil had been changed for sure, and they would not pretend. And I don't even know what else to add. The car is now 4 years and 3 months old (bought in April 2011). It now has 84 thousand, and during all this time there was absolutely nothing but what was described above. Of all the cars that I personally had, the BMW X5 E70 turned out to be the most reliable. Even my hands itched to do something with it, because I like the car to be serviced. But apart from all the consumables, such an opportunity was not presented. Of the minuses, I can note the stiffness of the suspension. Yes, fantastic handling has its drawbacks. In general, you get used to the rigidity, but changing to another class, you suddenly feel more comfortable and less controllable.
