Timing belt octavia a7. Consequences of untimely replacement and causes of failure

Replacing the timing belt is one of the most responsible and time-consuming operations performed during Maintenance car. According to the list of routine maintenance established for the Skoda Octavia A5, the condition of the belt should be checked after 60,000 km of run, and then every 30,000 km. When reaching 120,000 km, a belt replacement is provided.

In this article, we present step by step instructions for replacing the timing belt of a 1.6 MPI engine with a factory index BSE. The procedure is quite complicated, requiring a well-equipped workplace, special tools and specific knowledge. That is why the owners of the Skoda Octavia A5 often do not risk doing this operation on their own, preferring to contact a specialized service. For those who still decide to replace the timing belt on their Octavia 1.6 without outside help, we have prepared a step-by-step guide.

Accessories and tools

Before you get started, you need to purchase accessories. The original part numbers from the catalog with prices are given below:

  • Timing belt - 06A 109 119 C. Price - 800-1000 rubles.
  • Tension roller - 06A 109 479 F. Price - 1400-2000 rubles.
  • Coolant pump - 06B 121 011 QX. Price - 1700-2000 rubles.

The list includes a water pump for the reason that it can be changed during the replacement of the belt, if you suddenly have questions about its operation (smudges were found or extraneous sounds are heard).

After purchasing the components, you need to prepare the tool. It takes a lot of equipment full list we will not bring. We only note that in addition to the standard set of keys (end, hexagon, torx), you will need a special key to turn the timing belt tensioner. It is not difficult to buy it in a store or make it yourself. Alternatively, a suitable circlip plier with side grip can be used.

1.6 MPI engine timing belt replacement sequence

To perform the work, you will need a flyover or inspection ditch. The ideal option is a garage equipped with a pit.

We start by removing the protective decorative casing of the engine, which is fixed with the help of four ball racks. Just pull up first the front edge of the casing, and then the back.

We remove the crankcase protection by unscrewing the five screws securing to the body and four screws securing the fender liner on each side.

Then remove the drive belt auxiliary units(see the article "Replacing the alternator belt Skoda Octavia A5"). This procedure can be performed later, when there is more convenient access to the nodes.

To get to the timing belt, you need to remove the right engine mount. This will be possible only after dismantling the following parts: adsorber, washer reservoir neck, expansion tank of the cooling system.

We do not remove the adsorber completely, but simply unscrew the screws of the upper and lower fasteners and take it aside along with the hoses.

Then we unscrew the screw securing the neck of the washer reservoir, remove the neck, unscrew the screw securing the holder and remove the holder. The branch pipe leading to the washer reservoir is detachable, so you can disconnect the neck and remove it completely.

Now you need to dismantle expansion tank. To do this, first, by pressing the latch, disconnect the coolant level sensor connector, and then loosen the clamp and remove the steam outlet hose. We will not disconnect the lower liquid hose, since in this case it will be necessary to completely drain the coolant from the system. We simply unscrew the screws securing the tank (two pieces) and take it to the side, since the length of the hose allows this to be done.

Before proceeding with the removal of the engine mount, it is necessary to install a jack under the crankcase to power unit did not fall. After this is done, first unscrew the two screws securing the support bracket to the engine, and then the two screws securing the support to the body. Take out the upper part of the bracket.

Next, you need to remove the lower part of the support, screwed to the cylinder block. It is mounted on three bolts - two on top and one on the bottom. Working with them is not very convenient, so, most likely, you will have to sweat a little. To facilitate access to the bolts, you can "play" with the engine, raising or lowering it on a jack.

After dismantling all the above parts, free space on the right side engine compartment has become larger, so it is much more convenient to remove the auxiliary drive belt at this stage. If you didn't take it off earlier, do it now.

To gain access to the timing belt, you need to remove the protective cover, which consists of two parts. To remove the upper part, first turn the special lock from the “CLOSE” position to the “OPEN” position, and then release the two latches on top with a screwdriver. The lower part of the casing is fastened with three screws, unscrew them and take out the casing. Now you can see the timing belt, tensioner and pulley system.

The next step is to align the mark on the pulley camshaft marked on the cylinder head cover. The coincidence of the marks will indicate that the piston of the first cylinder is at the top dead center (TDC) position. To mark each other, you need to turn the crankshaft by the bolt in the center of the accessory drive pulley. This is done with the "19" key. As soon as the marks on the camshaft pulley matched, check if the marks on the pulley matched crankshaft(slot on the outermost stream and a pointer on the lid). If the valve timing was set correctly, the marks on both shafts should match, which means you can move on.

Now it's time to remove the accessory drive pulley, which is attached to the crankshaft with four hex bolts. Under the pulley is a cover on which a mark is just applied. We unscrew the two remaining screws securing this cover, remove it and see the pulley with the timing belt.

We proceed directly to the removal of the belt. To do this, we loosen the tension roller fastening nut and turn it clockwise using a special key with two protrusions, which was discussed at the beginning of the article. Then we remove the belt and the roller itself, finally unscrewing the nut of its fastening.

If you planned to replace the water pump along with the belt change, unscrew the three screws securing it and remove it by prying it with a screwdriver for a special tide. In this case, the coolant from the system must be previously drained. Install the new pump in the reverse order of removing the old one.

Now let's pay attention to the design of the timing belt tensioner, which should be replaced along with the belt. It is equipped with a special mechanism with two marks ("front sight" and "sight"), as well as a sleeve with turnkey holes. After installation, the sleeve will need to be rotated counterclockwise (in the direction of the drawn arrow) until the marks are aligned. This ensures the necessary tension of the timing belt.

So let's install a new one. tension roller in place of the old one. Toothed belt we put it first on the camshaft pulley, then on the water pump pulley and, finally, on the crankshaft pulley. At the end, we put the belt on the tension roller and proceed to the tension. By rotating the sleeve, we achieve the coincidence of the marks, and then we tighten the roller fastening nut.

If everything is done according to the instructions, then the tension should be optimal, but you need to make sure of this. One way to check is to twist the leading branch of the belt along the axis. In this case, we try to twist the belt section between the camshaft pulleys and the water pump by hand. If you manage to do this more than 90 degrees, then the belt is loosely tensioned.

After making sure that the belt tension is normal, we once again check the coincidence of all marks and proceed to assembly. It is produced in reverse order, but there is one important point relating to the engine mount. When installing it, the dimensions shown in the figure below must be observed.

This is the procedure for replacing the timing belt on a 1.6 MPI car engine Skoda Octavia A5. Below is a video on this topic.

The timing belt is one of the important parts Skoda engine Octavia A7. He is responsible for the distribution and combustion of the mixture, and also correctly distributes the injection into the combustion stone and the exhaust gases in time. If the belt does not work correctly, then this can affect the stable operation of the internal combustion engine. The article will talk about the causes of failure, the consequences and the process of choosing and replacing a timing belt for the Skoda Octavia A7.

The timing belt must be of high quality and durable, so its choice should be approached wisely. In addition to the original, there are many analogues that can be installed on the Skoda Octavia A7. The main ones that are quality-tested are shown in the table below. Along with the belt, it is worth changing the tension roller, as it wears out along with the belt.

Consequences of untimely replacement and causes of failure

Untimely replacement of the timing belt and roller on the Skoda Octavia A7 can lead to serious consequences for the engine as a whole. Of the main costly consequences may be repairs or complete replacement block heads.

Reasons for the failure of the timing belt Skoda Octavia A7:

  • stretching of the belt or physical wear;
  • mechanical damage, or rather a rupture, which occurs as a result of improper installation;
  • bad belt tension.

The main consequence untimely replacement the belt will become bent valves, which will lead to damage to the cylinder head. The consequence of this may be cracks in the head of the block in the areas of landing of valve guides, seats, as well as deformation or wear of the camshaft cams.

Timing belt replacement process

The process of replacing the timing belt Skoda Octavia A7 is simple, but it will take a sufficient amount of time, since you will have to remove a lot of parts, as well as set the timing mechanism exactly with the instructions. So let's get started.

  1. Dismantle the right wheel.
  2. Remove the lower and upper motor protection.
  3. Drain the coolant.
  4. We unscrew the engine cushion.

  5. Now you need to set the TTM.

  6. Dismantle the crankshaft pulley.
  7. Remove the timing belt cover.
  8. We dismantle the roller.
  9. We take off the belt.
  10. Change the belt and pulley to new ones.
  11. We assemble everything in the reverse order, without knocking down the location of the crankshaft and camshaft, so as not to knock down the gas distribution mechanism.

Conclusion

Replacing the timing belt of the Skoda Octavia A7 is extremely important in order to properly distribute the engine work, as well as to have stability. It should be noted that the timely correct replacement save the engine. It is worth regularly checking the condition of the belt and tightening it, if this is not done, then it will quickly wear out and you will have to put in a new one, and doing this every time is expensive.

Replacing the timing belt Skoda Octavia is a procedure, the neglect of which threatens with big troubles. At first glance, the work is nothing, for a few hours, but practice shows that one wrong move not only nullifies all the work done, but also unleashes the Second World War under the hood at the stage of the bombing of Hiroshima. Nothing complicated and scary ... nothing but attentiveness, a special tool and following all the manufacturer's recommendations.

Given:

  • Car: Skoda Octavia
  • Release year: 2008
  • Model year: 2009
  • Engine: BUD (1.4 l., 1390 cc, 80 hp)
  • ICE features: four-cylinder, gasoline, simple and reliable. Beech shavings, as in the beer of the same name, are absent
  • Gearbox: JHU
  • Preselective Gearbox Robot DSG: No
  • Mileage: 220,000 kilometers

Required:

  • replace timing belt

The car is serviced by us on an ongoing basis, we monitor it and are responsible for its good technical condition. Of course, every time this car appears on our doorstep, a full comprehensive diagnosis of the Skoda Octavia is carried out. We look at the current weak spots, we compare with the data of past diagnostics and draw conclusions about what has changed and in what direction since the last visit. All malfunctions that require elimination are eliminated on the spot. If something can be postponed until the next visit, we save this information and agree with the owner on the mileage or date.

The replacement of the Skoda Octavia timing belt was carried out preventively, according to the mileage, namely, 90,000 kilometers after replacing the previous belt.

First of all, you need to protect the work area from the side of the right wing, where the Skoda Octavia timing system is located - even if all the work overalls of the masters are protected and do not contain sharp edges, there is always a risk of hooking the wing with a tool, so we attach a magnetic cape and get to work. Skoda repair Octavia, however, like any other machine, requires compliance not only with the manufacturer's technologies, but also with safety regulations. We protect ourselves from the car, and the car from us.

We remove the upper engine cover, crankcase protection and the right side plastic protection in the wheel arch to provide access to the drive system. We take the Skoda Octavia drive belt tensioner pulley clockwise, fix it with a pin and remove the belt.

We pay attention to the almost new belt roller () and smile smugly - it was recently replaced by us. Looks like new, tightens well, ribbed belt () is in excellent condition.

ELSA advises marking the direction of the drive belt, but there are two simple rules, which are also applicable for timing, if you look at them from the side of the installation:

  • the belt moves clockwise;
  • the belt is oriented so that the applied marking is freely readable (not turned upside down).

We provide ourselves with freedom of maneuver in advance, remove the upper casing of the timing system, unscrew the filler neck of the washer reservoir and the adsorber, which is also a carbon filter for trapping gasoline vapors, an important element of the EVAP system.

The coolant reservoir can be unscrewed and hosed to the side without disconnecting, but if you like freedom of action, arm yourself with plastic clips and remove it like the previous two positions. Again, associations with the First artificial Earth satellite create a good mood and a relaxed atmosphere.

Next, we set the first cylinder to TDC (top dead center), combining the notch on the crankshaft pulley with the edge of the mark above it. The mark consists of two strips, you need to combine with the inside of the right strip. For convenience, we mark the control points with special paint - it's much easier to work.

There are five holes on the camshaft gears: four main holes in 90-degree increments and a small stop fifth. In our case, they did not match and are on opposite sides of the gears.

We make one more turn of the crankshaft, again set it according to the marks, now the locking holes are opposite each other and lie on the same line.

To fix the camshafts, we need a special tool that excludes their displacement.

The pins must not only be threaded into the locking holes in the camshaft gears, but also driven all the way into the fitting holes in the camshaft housing, after which the pin bar should be pushed all the way towards the engine.

We arm ourselves with a counter-support, fix the crankshaft pulley, unscrew the fixing bolt and remove the pulley. We put another washer on the old bolt and pull the crankshaft gear with it, at the same time marking the mark and the beveled tooth with paint.

We hang the engine using a traverse, unscrew the four bolts and remove the right Skoda Octavia engine support ().

We unscrew the bracket of the right engine support from the cylinder head, the bracket is located immediately under the camshaft gears.

We loosen the main timing belt tensioner by turning it counterclockwise, unscrew the central fixing bolt and remove the tensioner. Now it is enough to pull out the pins of the latch, remove the belt and put the latch in place.

And here we notice that something is clearly wrong with the Skoda Octavia water pump - it has lost the internal timing belt limiter, which prevents it from slipping.

What can you do, you will have to remove the pump, although it did not show any signs for its replacement. As you can see, the limiter was vomited with meat and there is no way to fix it. When this happened, history is silent, but he did not manage to inflict critical damage to the belt.

We put a new water pump(OEM). Its main difference is in the integrated gasket, while the previous one was on a separate one.

inner side the main timing belt has already begun to rub, so the owner was lucky to come to the service in such a timely manner. Here is the surface of the new belt for comparison.

Drain all antifreeze into a special container. It was recently changed, so be sure to filter it before pouring.

After the gravity flow stops, we remove the old water pump, wash everything from dirt and antifreeze, after which we degrease the surface and install a new pump.

Now you can return to the interrupted replacement of the timing belt Skoda Octavia. We turn clockwise the tensioner roller of the connecting drive belt, it is also the camshaft belt, loosening it, and then unscrew it. This gives us the opportunity to painlessly remove the old belt. We begin the assembly procedure, armed with a new timing belt repair kit ().

We check that the first cylinder is at the top dead center, combining the beveled tooth of the crankshaft with the mark, after which we put on the connecting belt and install a new camshaft belt tensioner. We remove the camshaft retainer, turn the crankshaft counterclockwise at a distance of one tooth, this is about one and a half millimeters, put on a new main drive belt, and then fix the camshafts again. We install a new timing belt tensioner and a new bypass roller, after which you can remove the camshaft lock.

We make two full turns of the crankshaft, thereby returning the first cylinder to the top dead center and look at the coincidence at two points:

  • beveled tooth on the crankshaft gear with a mark on the flange gasket;
  • the locking holes coincide with the fitting holes, the latch is freely installed.

If necessary, the procedure for tensioning the main timing belt is repeated, after which you can put on covers and assemble the car, it's up to you.

It remains to install the crankshaft pulley back, without fail replacing the mounting bolt (). It does not come with timing kits and is purchased separately. All seats are cleaned, the thread is degreased, after that the bolt is lubricated with oil and twisted with an impressive moment of 150 N m, after which it is turned another 180 degrees.

You can, of course, pull the bolt half a turn by eye, but it’s much easier to arm yourself with a goniometer, which allows you to follow the manufacturer’s procedure as accurately as possible.

Everything, it remains to put in place the bracket of the right engine mount and the support itself, remove the traverse, install it in place drive belt, pour filtered antifreeze, put on all removed covers and protections. We warm up the engine, driving air lock and add antifreeze to the level. On this, the maintenance of the Skoda Octavia can be considered completed.

Complex replacement of the timing belt Skoda Octavia, taking into account the new pump, took 3 hours 24 minutes. The cost of all labor, spare parts and consumables was 16 700 rubles.

Nevertheless, the technology for the production of rubber products has gone very far. If the belt is unique, then there is no need to fluctuate in its quality, and it is guaranteed to leave its prescribed kilometers. We would not recommend extending the change interval beyond 90,000 km. It doesn't make sense to risk it again. Moreover, the replacement procedure is not so difficult. It takes about 3 hours in time.

Belt wear is unrealistic to find “by eye”, apart from especially neglected cases when cracks are already visible to the naked eye. In other cases, it is worth adhering to the recommended replacement schedule. A broken belt sometimes always happens, regardless of its external condition. And, like women, creates nasty consequences. Its wear depends on the operating conditions, temperature conditions, and the criterion for storing the car. When the belt lasts not just the stated period, but from time to time it can break already thousands of kilometers after the recommended interval, there have been such cases.
