Hyundai Santa Fe against competitors: a big test of crossovers. Comparison of crossovers in the middle class — Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento Video reviews and test drives

Many experts call the period of the 2000s the era of Asian crossovers. Indeed, just at that time there was a real automobile boom, in which SUVs played a key role. If before, European models were the undoubted leaders, then, with the beginning of the 21st century, the situation has changed dramatically in favor of Korean and Japanese cars.

Not only are they fighting for a place in the sun with cars from the Old World, but in recent years, competition between the Asian concerns themselves has intensified. It is about this case that we will talk today. In this article, we will compare the Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento - two crossovers that can already be safely called old-timers in the automotive industry.

Santa Fe's career began in 2000. Analysts, even before the release of the model, predicted a great future for the car. One of the main reasons for this was considered the use of a modular platform from the legendary Hyundai Sonata. Indeed, according to most experts, the use of this type of body is a direct path to success. Due to the fact that the car was originally created for the US market, marketers and the name picked up the right one - Santa Fe. For those who do not know, the city located in the US state of New Mexico is also called by itself. The great demand for the new product prompted the company to think that it was time to deliver the crossover to Europe.

After several small updates, in 2006, the first car of the second generation descended from the assembly line of an enterprise located in the state of Alabama. The new Santa Fe broke all sales records of its predecessor, and, for a while, became the so-called "best seller" in the automotive market. Then there were two restylings, and, in the end, Santa Fe 3 was introduced. It is worth noting that the developers also created a 7-seater modification of the car. By the way, it was twice recognized as the safest in the class.

As a response to a competitor, Hyundai, in the winter of 2002, the premiere of the new Sorento took place. By analogy with its today's counterpart, the car was also named after the city, but this time the resort of Sorrento, located in Italy. Interestingly, the first generation model was classified as an SUV, as there were some differences between European and Asian automotive regulations. It cannot be said that the Sorento greatly outperformed its competitors, but this did not prevent it from showing good sales results.

In 2009, the second generation model was introduced. The developers have worked on the dimensions and features of the body, so no one had any doubts that the Sorento is a crossover. In 2014, as part of an event in Paris, the presentation of the third generation Sorento took place. This event plunged motorists into a pleasant shock, as representatives of the Korean company did not inform anyone about the upcoming premiere. It was a fantastic marketing ploy, as already at the end of the first month of sales, all possible records were broken. Interestingly, in the Russian market, the crossover is called the Kia Sorento Prime.

Given all the above information, when asked which is better, in terms of history - Kia Sorento or Hyundai Santa Fe, the second option looks more attractive.

Appearance

Perhaps today, Hyundai designers have nightmares about the time when the first generation Santa Fe came out. The exterior of the debut version of the crossover, to put it mildly, was not impressed. No one could understand how it was possible to design the legendary Sonata module so ridiculously. Fortunately, the second generation Santa Fe, in addition to becoming a full-fledged crossover, received an updated look. Designers have focused on the modernity and manufacturability of the exterior of the car.

In turn, the third-generation model already boasted one of the brightest exteriors in its class. I would especially like to note the ease and ease with which the developers managed to combine dynamism and sophistication in the appearance of Santa Fe. Interestingly, the car has already twice been recognized as the best in terms of design.

Kia designers, unlike their competitors, immediately put a lot of effort into decorating the appearance of the Sorento. In the exterior of the car, notes of aggressiveness are visible, which gives the model an advantage over competitors. It is worth noting that the debut version was considered an SUV, so the overall dimensions were impressive.

The appearance of the second generation has changed markedly. Fortunately for the fans of the company - for the better. The car has noticeably decreased and received a completely new front end. The appearance of the third-generation crossover has undergone only minor improvements, among which I would like to note the installation of new optics and foglights.

At this point, the Kia Sorento looks stronger.

Salon

Despite the fact that both models are Korean, there are quite a few differences between the design of their interior. If, for example, the Santa Fe salon is made in the so-called premium style, where expensive finishing materials and high-tech elements are used, then in the Sorento salon there is simplicity and comfort. Designers have relied on minimalism, and equipped the dashboard with only the most necessary. A huge plus of the Sorento is that it is much more spacious than its counterpart.

Since the current situation looks very contradictory, we will award a draw in this confrontation.

Specifications

If we compare the filling of the latest modifications of crossovers, then the following situation develops: Santa Fe - three gasoline engines (2.0, 2.4, 3.3 l) and two diesel engines (2.0, 2.2 l), Kia Sorento - gasoline for 2.0, 2.4 and 3.3 l, and diesel for 2.0, 2.2 liters. In terms of volume, everything is exactly the same, but only the units of the first crossover are a little more powerful.

If we compare the models of 2017, we get twins. Santa Fe is slightly more powerful and uses more fuel. The rest of the cars are the same.

Price

The cost of Kia Sorento 2017 in the basic configuration is 1,794,000 rubles. You will have to pay 1,609,000 rubles for it.

One of the most popular automakers is the South Korean giant Hyundai Motors. For all its time, the concern has produced a large number of different models of cars. In the last two decades, the main focus has been on the production of crossovers. Therefore, it is not surprising that Hyundai SUVs literally flooded the world market. The main reason for this was their reliability and relatively low cost.

In today's article, we will try to compare the Santa Fe and Tussan, and as a result, we will be able to determine which is better than the Hyundai Santa Fe or Tussan.

Production of which started in 2000, is considered the first full-fledged crossover of the company. The car was named after the city of the same name in the United States, as it was originally planned that it would be sold only in the North American market. Journalists and analysts have severely criticized the debut version of the crossover for its indistinct appearance, but this did not prevent the model from becoming the leader in sales in the United States. The main feature of the Santa Fe lineup is that the car has been restyled every year.

In 2006, the second generation SUV was introduced. In its design, a new body module was used, which allowed the model to be positioned as a mid-size crossover, and not as compact as before. In 2012, the third generation Santa Fe made its debut. The developers offered two options for the cabin - 5 and 7-seater.

Debuted in 2004, by analogy with its competitor, was also named after an American town located in Arizona. The audience did not immediately accept the novelty, which affected the low level of sales. In 2009, the second generation car was presented, which has now been renamed the ix35.

In the spring of 2015, as part of the Geneva Motor Show, the third generation Tussan was presented to the public. It is worth noting that the car is one of the three most popular crossovers in Russia.

Since Santa Fe boasts a large number of modifications, we will give it the advantage in this aspect.

Appearance

The debut version of Santa Fe, as mentioned above, received a lot of negative criticism for its appearance. Specialists and critics were surprised by the fact that using a modular platform, the developers managed to design the exterior in such a ridiculous way. Fortunately, in subsequent restyling, a number of shortcomings were corrected, and the second-generation model appeared before motorists in a completely new guise.

The third generation of Santa Fe received an even more modernized exterior, which became much more dynamic and aggressive, but at the same time, the designers managed to retain the main features of the model range.

Sometimes it seems that Korean developers deliberately make the first modification of their crossovers nondescript in order to fix this in subsequent versions. Because Tussan has exactly the same situation. The car, built on the base and Sportage, received not the most stylish exterior, and few believed in the good future of the model. But after the release of the second generation Tussan in 2009 with a completely updated appearance, the number of optimistic motorists increased.

To date, Tussan is considered one of the most stylish in the class. As the developers themselves note, the main secret of such success is the application of the “liquid sculpture” design concept.

Due to the fact that both models went through a very similar way of developing their exterior, we will award a draw at this point, and this will be the most logical result of the confrontation.

Salon

It is very difficult to compare the interiors of Tucson and Santa Fe cars, which are representatives of the same company. This is especially true of the Korean concern Hyundai, whose developers, in the design of the interior of models, use the same stylistic concepts. In order not to go far, just look inside the latest modifications of cars.

It is noticeable that the dashboard, and especially its upper part, are decorated in exactly the same way, the same can be said about the layout of the steering wheel. However, Santa Fe uses premium materials for interior trim. This does not mean at all that the Tussan interior is poorly made, just the quality of the materials is slightly inferior. It is worth noting that both cars are quite roomy, but Santa Fe also boasts a 7-seater version, which is undoubtedly a big plus for a crossover.

Based on the fact that the Santa Fe salon is trimmed with more expensive materials and has a 7-seater modification, we will give preference to this particular car.

Specifications

The main advantage of Santa Fe has always been heavy-duty powertrains. The debut version was equipped with petrol engines with a volume of 2.7 and 3.5 liters, as well as a two-liter diesel engine. In subsequent modifications, 2.2 and 2.4-liter engines also appeared, and the older gasoline engine was replaced by a 3.3-liter one.

The Tussan engine line has every reason to complex, in the case of such a comparison. The developers took as a basis a two-liter diesel engine, a similar gasoline engine, as well as another 2.7-liter unit, and equipped them with all modifications of the crossover. By the way, in the latest generation model, the older gasoline unit was no longer used.

There should no longer be questions about the technical characteristics of which car is better. Of course, this is the Hyundai Santa Fe.

Price

The cost of Santa Fe in the basic configuration was set at around 1,794,000 rubles. This figure refers to the latest generation model.

The minimum cost of Tussan should not exceed 1,505,000 rubles. However, this does not include a full set of airbags and a multimedia system.

If we compare by price, then Tussan is the clear leader.

Although both of these crossovers are a global product, the main target market is overseas. There are large seven-seater SUVs in honor, and for a long time. That did not stop us from localizing them. Grand Santa Fe and Sorento Prime are built on a single platform. But if Kia has a big Mohave, then in the camp of Hyundai it is the Grand Santa Fe, the flagship crossover of the brand. Dimensions echo the high status - Santa has almost five meters in length, and Sorento is 120 mm shorter. If the width on the second row of seats is parity, then in terms of legroom, the Santa is more spacious. Even more difference in length is felt on the third row. If in Santa Fe adult riders will endure a short trip without much discomfort, then in Sorento it will be completely uncomfortable for an adult in the gallery. And although Kia has its own climate control unit for the third row, it can only be used to change the intensity of the airflow. While in Santa Fe, the temperature is also regulated on the third row. Interestingly, the second row in both cars is devoid of personal climate.

For two passengers on the second row Hyundai expanse, but the three of them are a bit crowded. The rear seats can be moved forward or backward, and the inclination of the backrests is also set. Kia, although shorter by 120 mm, but on the second row is only a fraction closer, the seat adjustments are the same.

The ergonomics of the driver's seat is not without flaws. In Kia, in general, a comfortable seat, except that the driver lacks a little support in the shoulder area. Excellent steering wheel covered with smooth leather. But in order to reach the display of the multimedia system, you have to break away from the seat back. In Santa, it was also worth working out the center console better - its layout takes some getting used to. Although there is no need to reach for the entertainment complex here. The Santa Fe multifunctional steering wheel is not so convenient - in order to press some buttons, you have to remove your hand from the usual grip.

In terms of design, Santa's interior is 100% Hyundai. The same can be said about finishing materials. And although there are many light colors in the interior design, this does not add much elegance. Kia's interior looks more solid, but the monotony of colors soon depresses. But there are no questions about the quality of materials.

It would be naive to expect phenomenal agility from full-size SUVs. The Hyundai steering wheel is a little overweight during parking maneuvers, but the feeling of feedback remains with increasing speed. The Kia's steering wheel requires less effort at low speeds, but it lacks the purity of reactions in sharp maneuvers. And yet, is it really that important? Comfort for such cars should be at the forefront. And indeed, as a retribution for the “pass-through” steering setting, the Sorento Prime indulges in silence and smoothness. But Hyundai lacks neither one nor the other. It works out the transverse irregularities more rigidly and reacts more sharply to the track. Surprisingly, in a busy state, the situation is only getting worse.

Differences in power available are easier to find in the technical specifications than to feel behind the wheel. Under the hood of the Sorento is a proven 3.3-liter unit with multipoint injection. And Santa has a 3.0-liter engine with direct fuel injection. Both put out a tax-friendly 250bhp. and docked with a 6-speed hydromechanics.

Of course, the V-shaped six, whatever the injection scheme it may have, is not enough for such large cars. So overclocking can’t be called otherwise than by the term “sufficient” that has already set the teeth on edge. Fuel consumption is also "sufficient". Even with delicate handling of the accelerator pedal, Hyundai required up to 12 l / 100 km. And Kia with a less progressive engine is even more voracious by a liter. As a result - neither dynamics, nor profitability.

Korean SUVs performed the same way on our commercials. When the platforms were under one front and one rear wheel, both cars overcame the obstacles. But it all ended with a diagonal. It was worth putting three wheels on the platforms, as Kia and Hyundai gave in.

Before you go on a serious off-road, you should think carefully several times. After all, none of them shines with geometric cross-country ability. Under both axles, the ground clearance is less than 200 mm, and the angles of entry and exit are quite comparable to passenger cars. So the Sorento and Santa Fe are rather large station wagons. Their element is slippery roads or not the deepest snow. But which one is better? While the Grand Santa Fe is a little more exciting to drive, it's unlikely to be a deciding factor for those who want a big crossover. My preference, albeit with a microweight, is on the side of the Kia Sorento Prime. Let this car be controlled a little worse, but it is more comfortable. A more humane price tag only adds Sorento points.

In this article, I want to compare two mid-size Korean crossovers to find out which is better: Santa Fe or Sorento. Comparison is a little tricky due to the fact that both cars are built on the same platform and belong to the same company. But still, I'll try. We will discuss the appearance, interior design and useful options.

Hyundai Santa Fe is already on sale in the fourth generation, but Kia Sorento Prime is still in the third, albeit restyling. Hence the difference in "goodies": the first one is more modern and, therefore, equipped with the latest options, and the second, although it tries to catch up with it, is deprived of some interesting "chips". Although, in principle, the car from Kia looks quite worthy against the background of the model from Hyundai ahead of it.

Look at the generation chart:

Santa Fe began to be produced in 2000, 2 years earlier than Sorento. This was the beginning of their discrepancies in generations. While the first was completely updated in 2005, the second was still on the market in the first version.

The first generation of Sorento saw the light in 2002, in 2006 it underwent restyling and was produced until 2009. The second-generation Santa Fe was already preparing for a 2010 facelift at this time.

While Kia updated the second-generation model in 2012, Hyundai launched the third version of its crossover into production.

The third generation of Santa Fe survived the restyling in 2015 and was then produced until 2018; it has now been replaced by the fourth generation model. And Sorento Prime since 2014 is still produced in the third generation, which in 2017 underwent a slight facelift, plus received a few new options.

Due to the fact that there are a lot of requests for comparison of almost all generations of these crossovers, I decided to briefly highlight each of them by comparing their appearance, equipment and technical characteristics.

Body

Let's compare the appearance of the models and useful options for the body.

Appearance

The company has done a great job on the exterior design of both cars. Now, almost every model of the automaker, whether it be Kia or Hyundai, has a modern appearance, which cannot be said about the cars of the early 2000s.

If earlier it was clearly felt that you were looking at a product of the Korean auto industry (and this repulsed you), now, looking at the models coming off the assembly line of Kia and Hyundai, you somehow don’t think about this trifle. And all why? But because their management made the right decision to swell the N-th amount of money into the development of the design. As they say, take a risk and win.

Take a look at the 2017 Grand Santa Fe for example:

To the interesting appearance and rather solid design of the pre-styling versions, after the restyling, some extravagance was also added.

The appearance of the Santa Fe 2018 model year, completely updated, is generally aiming for the title of the most futuristic among mid-range crossovers:

Unusual appearance, enough chrome (not in the basic version) to emphasize the elegance of the body, radiator grille with an interesting, stylish charismatic pattern, LED daytime running lights with a cheeky squint, headlights in a vertical form factor (LEDs are available from the second configuration ) and stylish rear LED (in the maximum configuration) lights - all this creates a feeling, if not of superiority over other road users, then the feeling that your car is at the forefront of modern automotive design - that's for sure. Well, if such an exterior seems too extravagant to you, then I think you should choose the previous generation Hyundai Grand Santa Fe.

Kia Sorento Prime 2017 clearly loses to its fellow futuristic:

It still has the same representative appearance and harmonious design, slightly ennobled after restyling due to the use of chrome in larger quantities than before, as well as a new grille pattern (by the way, quite pleasant). Of the interesting, one can also note branded four-point foglights. But this applies to all modern models of this brand. The headlights are made in the traditional form factor, without excessive pretentiousness.

Rear LED lights in the Kia Sorento Prime are also present. But unlike a competitor, they are not available in the maximum, but already starting from the third (out of five) trim levels. The same applies to the front LED optics. By the way, the adaptive lighting system is currently only available at maximum speed, while the Hyundai Santa Fe lacks auto-corrector headlights only in the basic version (for comparison: the second did not have such a function at all before, and the first one had it after restyling the second generation ).

Options

A light sensor that allows the headlights to turn on automatically is present in the “base” of both cars. However, this was not always the case. So, the Santa Fe 3 and the pre-styling Sorento 3 did not have a light sensor in the basic configuration. At Sorento 2, it came from the second configuration, and for Santa Fe 2 it was only available as an option.

Fog lights in the latest versions are present in both already in the basic configuration. By the way, for Hyundai, this seems to be the norm - it has always been like this. But Kia in the "base" they appeared, starting with the restyling of the second generation.

Interesting "chips" that have recently begun to be used everywhere on new models: the first is a system that is responsible for automatically switching headlights from high beam to low beam and vice versa, and the second is an automatic body leveling system. On Santa Fe 2018 they are, but on Sorento 2018, of course, no - after all, it is still of the previous generation, albeit updated.

But since 2012, the Kia Sorento has had an electric folding exterior mirrors in the basic version, while the Hyundai Santa Fe until 2013 had it only as an option, and then - starting from the second configuration. The electric drive and heated mirrors in the “base” are always in both.

Electric heating of the wiper zone in the minimum configuration for Sorento since 2011, and for Santa Fe - 2014.

An interesting fact: the rain sensor is currently not in the basic configuration for both crossovers, Santa Fe 2016 could boast of it in the “base” (before that, it didn’t have such an option at all), the third Sorento before restyling had a rain sensor from the second configuration, the second pre-styling - from the third, post-styling - in the two richest equipment.

There is no headlight washer in both cars only in the “minimal wage”, starting from the third generation. In the second generation, Hyundai had it available as an option, and Kia had it in the two richest versions.

Interior

Design

Sitting in the new Santa Fe and Sorento, you find yourself in the realm of sufficient respectability and functionality.

Santa Fe 2018:

Sorento Prime 2017:

Both of them have an interesting interior design. The architecture of the consoles is symmetrical, which evokes a sense of harmony and completeness.

In principle, the interior was nice and Santa Fe 2016:

The tidy is made in a sporty style. This is evidenced by instrument wells with a chrome frame. The backlight is two-tone, but unobtrusive, pleasant.

The dashboard of the Sorento 2016 is made in a more calm, traditional form for this class of car. Instrument lighting is plain white.

Undoubtedly, interiors have evolved a lot. Compare with first generation car interiors.

Hyundai Santa Fe 1:

Kia Sorento 1:

Comfort

The “stuffing” of new cars also becomes “tastier” every year. For example, the following “comfort” options are available for the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe:

  1. The central 8-inch display is located at eye level (which is very ergonomic) and has physical buttons and knobs, which I think are more preferable. Such a display is not available for the base configuration, in the “base” you will only be given a monochrome 5-inch screen located in the console itself. By the way, the standard navigation system is added to the maximum configuration.
  2. In the richest version, the dashboard will include a 7-inch monitor, which will beautifully display not only the values of various indicators, but also play the role of a speedometer. In other trim levels, the “tidy” will have a standard 3.5-inch display.
  3. The gearshift knob will be covered with leather already in the minimum equipment.
  4. Self-dimming rear-view mirror - also in the "base".
  5. The cooled glove compartment is not available only in the basic version.
  6. Keyless entry with start/stop button is available from the second bundle.
  7. Illumination of the near-door space is available in richer equipment.
  8. Bluetooth, wireless charging for phones in the front and two USBs for second-row passengers are already available in the basic version.
  9. All cars are equipped with dual-zone climate control with anti-fogging system, air deflectors for the second row of seats, heated steering wheel and front seats. Heated rear seats and ventilated front seats are only available at maximum speed.
  10. Longitudinal adjustment of the seats and backrest angles of the second row, electrically adjustable lumbar support in the driver's seat are already available in the basic version. Electric adjustment of the driver's seat in 10 directions is present only in the richest configuration.

Kia Sorento 2017 has similar options, but with some differences:

  1. The situation with 8-inch and 5-inch displays is completely the same. Navigation is available from the third configuration out of five possible - i.e. here this function is more democratic.
  2. A 7-inch monitor in the dashboard is everywhere except the cheapest version.
  3. The leather gear knob, unlike its fellow, is not available in the “base”.
  4. The self-dimming interior mirror is also not available in the cheap version.
  5. There is no refrigerated glove box at all.
  6. Keyless entry and start / stop button - from the third configuration.
  7. Illumination of the threshold - from the second, and illumination of the legs - from the third.
  8. Bluetooth and two USB ports for the second row are present immediately, but wireless charging appears only in the pre-maximum version.
  9. Dual-zone climate control with deflectors for the second row and a heated steering wheel, for some reason, are not present in the “base”. But there are heated front seats. Heated rear seats are available starting from the second level, and ventilation of the front seats is available only in the richest configuration.
  10. Longitudinal adjustment of the seats and backrest angles of the second row is also available in the basic version, the driver's seat is electrically adjustable from the second level, and the electrically adjustable lumbar support in the driver's seat is not provided at all.

The third-generation Santa Fe salon pleases with the following "buns":

  1. The steering wheel and gear knob are trimmed in leather.
  2. The front row of seats has developed lateral support.
  3. The armrests in the doors are made of soft material, the elbow is comfortable.
  4. The second row of seats has an almost flat floor.
  5. Heated front seats are already in the "base", then - heated steering wheel and rear seats.
  6. Power seats and ventilation of the front seats - only in the "maximum speed".
  7. Refrigerated glovebox.
  8. Keyless entry system with start / stop button - only in the maximum configuration.
  9. Standard navigation system, Hi-Fi audio system, bluetooth - only in the richest version.

The pre-styling Sorento 2015 has some differences in trim levels:

  1. The steering wheel and gearshift knob are also covered in leather already in the basic version.
  2. The lateral support of the front seats is not as pronounced as that of a competitor.
  3. The armrests in the doors are also soft.
  4. Also almost a flat floor at the seats of the second row.
  5. Heated front seats as standard, heated steering wheel and rear seats - in more expensive versions.
  6. Unlike a colleague, electric seat adjustment is available from the third configuration, and ventilation of the front seats and front seat memory (which the opponent does not have at all) are available from the pre-maximum version.
  7. There is no refrigerated glove compartment.
  8. The keyless entry system with start/stop button is available from the third trim level.
  9. There is no Bluetooth and regular navigation only in the "base".

Used Hyundai Santa Fe 2008-2010 boast the following options:

  1. Heated front seats, no heated rear seats at all.
  2. Power seats are available from the pre-maximum configuration.
  3. Front seat ventilation is not available.
  4. Luke - with premaximum.
  5. Heated steering wheel is only optional.
  6. Keyless entry, start / stop button - also only optional.

The second generation Kia Sorento has a slightly different situation:

  1. Heated front seats before restyling in the "base" was not available, but after - it appeared. Heated rear seats were also absent before restyling, and after that it is available from the second configuration.
  2. Power seats before restyling - also in the "pre-maximum speed", after - in the richest version.
  3. Ventilation of the front seats appeared after restyling, available for the maximum configuration.
  4. The hatch was available only before the restyling - in the "pre-maximum speed".
  5. Steering wheel heating appeared after restyling - but not in the basic version.
  6. Keyless entry, the start / stop button was available before restyling from the third configuration, and after - from the second.

Safety

For the safety of life and health in the new Santa Fe, the airbags for the driver, passenger, side airbags and window blinds are responsible. And this is already in the basic configuration. Further, depending on the “tricks” of the configuration, systems for monitoring blind spots, lane control, frontal collision prevention, warning and avoidance of collision when leaving the parking lot in reverse, a driver fatigue sensor, and automatic locking of the rear doors in case of detection of an approaching rear transport.

The 3rd generation Santa Fe also boasted all airbags and a blind spot monitoring system already in the “base”, plus an airbag for the driver’s knees appeared in the maximum version. But in the second generation of Hyundai, window protective curtains became available only after restyling.

The updated Sorento Prime also has all the airbags and a warning and collision avoidance system when reversing from a parking lot in the minimum configuration. Plus, unlike a competitor, a system for locking the rear doors is immediately provided here. The blind spot monitoring system appears only in the maximum configuration, and there is no system for monitoring driver fatigue and keeping in the lane at all.

In the pre-styling 3rd generation Kia Sorento, the blind spot monitoring system was already available in the pre-maximum version, and the airbag for the driver's knees, unlike the opponent, is not available. But in the second generation, window cushions were installed even on the cheapest equipment.

assistants

For the 4th generation Hyundai Santa Fe, depending on the configuration, such systems and driver assistance devices are available as:

  • all-wheel drive control system HTRAC with intelligent redistribution of torque along the axes,
  • hill start assist system
  • adaptive cruise control, which maintains a distance from the vehicle moving in front, independently stops the car in a traffic jam and continues to move if the stop lasts no more than 3 seconds,
  • projection of readings of the main instruments on the windshield,
  • rear/front parking sensors
  • surround view system
  • automatic parking system
  • Rear View Camera.

In the third generation Santa Fe, also depending on the equipment, it was equipped with cruise control, parking assistance and a rear-view camera. There was no help system when starting uphill. Santa Fe 2 generations also did not have an uphill start assist system. There were also no such "goodies" as front parking assistance and automatic parking, a rear view camera. There were only cruise control and optional rear parking assistance.

The Kia Sorento has a hill start assist system after the second generation restyling, in 2012. After that, it was always available already in the basic version of the crossover. It seems that unlike Hyundai, Kia has always given its customers more assistants. So, the second generation, depending on the configuration, can boast (in addition to what the competitor had) another rear / front parking assistance system, an automatic parking system and a rear view camera. In the third generation, the Sorento retained cruise control, an uphill start assist system, reverse / front parking assistance systems, and a rear-view camera. After restyling in 2017, automatic parking and all-round visibility systems were added.

Summarizing

I understand that too much has been said. Maybe a little boring and difficult. But I honestly tried to figure out all the similarities and differences between the models of the last three generations myself.

Comparison of these cars I consider fulfilled, though not completely. It would be possible to compare the technical characteristics, but since the main part of the motors were the same for both cars, I think that this is not very necessary.

I look at the differences and understand that the questions “what to choose?” and “what to buy?” remain. Personally, I like both crossovers both in appearance and in the cabin. And those options that dealers call useful, I do not need for the most part. So decide for yourself what you like best. I hope I didn't waste my time and yours.

Their debut in Russia took place at the same time: both Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento of the current generation were shown at the Moscow Motor Show in 2012. Moreover, despite belonging to a single concern, marketers made every effort to breed these crossovers on different sides of the market. However, there is an opinion among the people that the same car is hidden under different brands. To understand whether this is so, we brought them together in a full-time duel.

The Korean auto industry, which, it would seem, quite recently offered inexpensive cars, has seriously gained momentum in recent years. It's no joke, representatives of the Land of the Morning Calm today, not at all embarrassed, attribute most of their products to the premium segment, opposing themselves to the famous German trinity and clearly exalting themselves above the rest of the players, including the entire Japanese brethren. Our today's duelists just fall into the niche where Korean dominance has become more and more obvious in recent years. However, before we start evaluating cars, let's take a short historical digression dedicated to their birth.

Everyone has their own track

The Hyundai Santa Fe crossover appeared on the crests of two waves at once: a tsunami-like growth of interest in mid-size SUVs and a thorough restructuring of the manufacturer. Both had a positive impact on the popularity of Santa Fe, even despite the odd appearance of the first generation model. The car turned out not only comfortable, spacious, but also reliable. In Russia, the crossover was offered only in an all-wheel drive version, with two petrol engines and a 2.0-liter turbodiesel. In general, the first generation Santa Fe has been breaking sales records for almost all 7 years of production. In 2006, the second generation Santa Fe debuted in the US. The crossover has become noticeably larger and prettier. In 2010, the car was slightly updated, and in February 2012 a new model was released, sales of which began this year. The Santa Fe is now available with two wheelbases - standard and extended.

The history of Santa Fe's neighbor on the assembly line is even richer. Once Kia Sorento was an SUV. The car of 2002 had a frame, independent front and dependent rear suspension, plug-in four-wheel drive and a lowering row in the transfer case. It was produced, in addition to Korea and the Philippines, also in Izhevsk. Its production was discontinued in April 2009, and at the same time the new Sorento was introduced, which, unexpectedly for everyone, became a crossover. The novelty was built on a load-bearing body, had an automatic all-wheel drive with the dominance of the front axle, a fully independent suspension and a set of electronic “gadgets” typical of a modern crossover. And it was also drawn by the famous designer Peter Schreyer and very well equipped. Schreyer managed to combine oriental ornateness and European expediency in the interior and make the exterior not too aggressive, but not too rustic. In 2012, the Sorento went through a planned restyling, which turned out to be much deeper than everyone expected.

looked, sat

Still, let's get back to where we started. Are they different or the same? Despite the external similarity and almost identical dimensions, it is felt that the design of each car is focused on its distribution area. Thus, the smarter look of Hyundai is clearly designed for the needs of those markets where they prefer the American school of automotive engineering. The calm, if not strict, Kia suit is more suitable for the definition of a European car.

Approximately the same can be said about the drawing of individual elements of the architecture of the salons. The Santa Fe sports a cheery dash lighting and a slightly more ornate execution of some interior details. The internal content of Sorento echoes the aristocratic appearance: everything is done in strict dark colors and, perhaps, even too conservatively - sometimes it seems gloomy.

However, there are no comrades for the taste and color, therefore, we will leave the arguments about the advantages and disadvantages of the design, and we only note that the quality of both the finishing materials themselves and the fitting of individual elements for both crossovers is at a very high level. One of the fellow journalists noted: if you forget about the nameplates, the feeling that you are really in a premium segment car. This is confirmed by good ergonomics of the driver's seat. As in Hyundai, and in Kia, a person of almost any build will be able to settle in the driver's seat without any problems. At least subjectively. However, our measurements showed a slight superiority of Santa Fe in this nomination. As, however, in terms of the supply of free space on the second row of seats, which, unlike Kia, has the ability to move separately in the longitudinal direction.

When assessing the usable volume of luggage compartments, an incidental situation occurred. The cargo compartment of the Kia Sorento is designed to please the Europeans - almost square, without unnecessary nooks and crannies. It seemed to be deliberately made to match our measuring cubes, so there were no difficulties with filling it. But the Hyundai trunk made me sweat, carefully choosing various combinations of dimensional figures to fill the proposed space. Imagine our amazement after counting the parallelograms! It turned out that in terms of the number of liters, our wards retained parity with an accuracy of one handbag.

Like the opponent, the Hyundai Santa Fe power unit is placed transversely in front. Free differentials (D) are placed between the wheels of each axle. It should be noted that in this mechanism there is no mechanical blocking, but there is its electronic imitation. A multi-plate friction clutch (M) is responsible for the distribution of torque between the axles. Depending on the driving conditions, the system is able to change the ratio of traction between the wheels of the front and rear axles in the ratio from 100:0 to 50:50. The driver cannot forcibly influence the distribution of power, except for the need to completely block the clutch package with a button located to the left of the steering column. True, this function is able to work for a very short time and at speeds not exceeding 30 km / h. There is also a "downhill assistant" and the ability to turn off the ESP.

Technical delights

Both Hyundai and Kia have a common aggregate base. For our market, they offer a gasoline atmospheric “four” with a volume of 2.4 liters or a 2.2-liter turbodiesel in the same four-cylinder configuration. Both motors have been upgraded during the latest car updates. This did not affect the power, but with the environment it became even better. The spark-ignition unit, as before, produces a maximum power of 175 hp, and its compression-ignition companion - 197 hp. Fate decreed that both motors fell into our hands. Under the hood of the Hyundai Santa Fe is a turbodiesel, while the Kia Sorento has a gasoline engine. However, there was something in common: both cars are equipped with modern six-range hydromechanical automatic machines with the possibility of manual gear selection.

How good are modern diesel engines! At least in our pair, according to subjective sensations, the car with this power unit showed the best dynamics and much less often when overtaking forced the machine to go into kick-down mode. Not to say that the Kia gasoline engine is bad. No, against the background of most competitors, it looks very, very good-looking, endowing the car with decent dynamics and demonstrating good elasticity. Even fuel consumption, which rarely rises above 14 l / 100 km, did not look too brutal, given the very difficult test conditions. And yet, the turbodiesel is superior to the “sparkling brother” in almost all respects, with the exception of the initial cost of the car and the cost of its maintenance.

However, dynamics and traction capabilities are not yet the full range of advantages attached to modifications with a turbodiesel. There is one more, at first glance, a small, but very significant nuance. Our Santa Fe, equipped with a heavy-fuel unit, had a hydraulic power steering system, while the Sorento had a newfangled electric power steering.

Not to say that the difference is very noticeable, but the hydraulic booster still reflects everything that happens in the area of \u200b\u200bthe contact patch of the tires of the steered wheels much more transparently. And when driving on straight lines, “zero” of the steering wheel is better filled with Hyundai. By the way, according to the overall assessment of handling, Hyundai and Kia were again in parity. Despite the more successful steering characteristics, the first one does not hold the given trajectory so confidently when performing the “rearrangement” exercise due to the softer chassis settings. Sometimes he too willingly falls into a deep skid already in the second phase of the exercise.

The Kia's stiffer suspension settings certainly help it match the Hyundai's handling, but they also tell the crew more clearly about bumps in the road. By the way, despite the difference in power units, everyone unanimously noted the excellent acoustic comfort inherent in both Santa Fe and Sorento. Once again, we were convinced that the manners for premium, at least for this indicator, look justified here.

The power unit of the Kia Sorento is placed transversely in front. Free differentials (D) are placed between the wheels of each axle. Between the wheels of the front and rear axles, the torque is distributed by a multi-plate friction clutch (M), similar to that used in the Hyundai Sanra Fe transmission. Accordingly, the node has exactly the same scheme, where the distribution of traction between the axles varies depending on the driving conditions in the ratio from 100:0 to 50:50. That is, under normal driving conditions, the entire flow of power is directed to the front wheels of the car. The rear ones are connected automatically if the electronics detect a difference in the angular speeds of their rotation. The driver can forcibly lock the clutch with a button located to the left of the steering column. In addition, it is possible to slightly increase the patency on soft soils by turning off the stabilization system. Unlike the Hyundai, the Kia lacks a descent assist system.

Wrong bird flight

Even before the start of sea trials, having put both cars on lifts and with a captious examination of the structures and their "underbelly", we closed the topic of the congress on more or less decent off-road. The bottom layout of the "brothers" is very similar, although the Sorento had a plastic crankcase, while the Santa Fe sported metal armor. Parts that are at risk when overcoming rough terrain are a little more at Kia. However, this does not give a decisive advantage to the latter, since the general configuration of the bottoms of the machines sins with similar shortcomings. For example, low-lying places for mounting shock absorbers of the rear axle suspension.

In fairness, let's say that the metal protection of the units located in front of the Hyundai Santa Fe ate a significant share of the ground clearance. At the same time, our measurements in other parts under the bottom showed that, in general, the cars have a very average geometric cross-country ability with a slight advantage in favor of Kia. But it also comes to naught due to the unsuccessful configuration of the exhaust tract.

Premium, not premium?

And at last, the last - that how much. Both cars were presented in very expensive trim levels. Our Santa Fe, equipped with a turbodiesel, is estimated at 1,669,900 rubles. For Sorento they ask for 20,000 rubles. less - 1,649,900. This, of course, is not cheap, even taking into account the presence of almost all the "benefits of civilization" in the equipment. The initial options with a similar aggregate base are offered for 1,413,900 rubles. in Hyundai showrooms and 1,319,900 rubles. - at Kia dealers. Well, judging by the initial cost, even despite the statements of the manufacturers, the cars are still in the average price budget. True, only as long as you do not want to get in their equipment those options that are most often inherent in cars of a higher rating. So let's assume that everything is fair here: if you want to feel like a premium, just pay extra for it.

Driver's seat9,0 6,6 5,1 After summing up the results in the general nomination "Body, ergonomics and comfort", the question asked at the very beginning of the article, how close our heroes are to models from the premium segment, answers itself. The winner of this test, the Hyundai Santa Fe, with a total of 43.2 points, falls into the top ten of the ranking, wedged between the now seventh-ranked Range Rover Supercharged (43.5 points) and the Audi Q7 (43.1 points). Moreover, he surpassed the latter even in such positions as the driver's seat, the seat behind the driver and the trunk. However, the second of our test - Kia Sorento, although it did not make it into the top ten, is far from being an outsider in the ranking. A total of 41.2 points puts him in 27th to 29th place with the Range Rover Sport and Subaru Outback, slightly behind the Mitsubishi Pajero and just behind the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

So, the leading Kia Sorento is on the same line with the Infiniti FX50. True, at the same time, it loses a little to the smaller Hyundai ix35 crossover, but it outperforms the Nissan Qashgai by 0.2 points. By the way, Santa Fe beat the Audi Q3 by 0.1 points and lost quite a bit to the long Qashgai version.

The Santa Fe, which has a turbodiesel under the hood, was expected to get into high positions in the rating, but the result of 18.6 points puts it on a par with the Land Rover Discovery and Nissan Patfinder occupying the second and third positions. Suffice it to say that slightly lower in the ranking is the diesel VW Touareg. The Sorento, even with a gasoline engine, ranks 16th along with the larger Kia Mohave, beating the “premium” Audi A4 Allroad and only 0.1 points behind the diesel Toyota Land Cruiser 200.
