Buggy from Oka. Buggy from Oka - it's easy

Now 28-year-old car service worker Denis Kostomarkin cuts across the Tula off-road in a mini-SUV.

The idea to make a buggy with my own hands came to me when I read in Sloboda about a motorist Dmitry Sytin, who himself assembled an ATV, says Denis Kostomarkin. - Although I have not done such things before, I still work in the service, I can do something ...
Denis had no soul for ATVs and tricycles - he liked 4-wheeled vehicles with a roof more. Denis bought an old Oka for 15 thousand rubles - and the alteration began!
- "Oka" was in such a state that it was simply unrealistic to ride it, - says Denis Kostomarkin. - On the same day, I disheveled her like a heating pad.
The subframe and the “engine” from the car, as well as the suspension and gearbox, went into action. In total, it took about six months to build the buggy, and the motorist finished the work just the other day: and is already going to start a new job.
- Plans for the future - to sell the buggy for a hundred thousand, - Denis laughs. - Otherwise, my wife Yulia does not allow me to start a new job until I deal with the old one. There are also plans to make something like a two-seater jeep out of the Oka car, with good acoustics and without a roof. It will be something like a golf car, like in foreign films.

Tulyak Denis Kostomarkin made his buggy from Oka in just six months.

BODY assembled from pipes, to which the cladding was welded and painted.
COST: 5000 rub.

WHEELS"Dunlop" brands were removed from the ATV, the discs for them were cut, inserting an additional strip of metal.

This buggy with all-wheel drive designed for 3-4 people. Gathered mainly to participate in competitive events between all-terrain vehicles. According to the author's idea, the all-terrain vehicle should have maximum cross-country ability, as well as remain light enough.

Materials and parts used in the construction of this all-terrain vehicle:
1) Engine from oki
2) Camera wheels 1065 by 450 and stripped 9.00x16 from tractor cart PTS4
3) Bridges from the classic vase
4) hubs and drive shafts from VAZ 2109
5) VAZ wheels, cornfield.
6) shock absorbers and springs from Oki
7) backseat from Oka
8) handbrake cable from vaz 2109
9) from fret "tens" gas drive cable.

Let us consider in more detail the stages of construction of an all-terrain vehicle.

To begin with, the author figured out the bridges, the mounting brackets were redone at the rear axle.
The front axle was assembled from the rear axle of a classic VAZ, and the drive shafts and hubs were taken from VAZ 2109
The wheel travel is about 22 cm.

From the disks from the vase and the fields, suitable for new wheels were welded. It turned out 16 inches with a width of 25 centimeters.

Thread locks were also made, a kind of threaded nuts, bolts are twisted into them, which help to keep the tire from turning.

Drive shafts were made with a length of 87 centimeters, the wall thickness of the seamless pipe is 3 mm, the outer diameter is 27 mm. The shafts will be installed between the box and bridges.

Installed rear shock absorbers as well as the front springs. ball turned out with a small gap of about 1 mm, after tightening the bolts, the levers tightened.

The stage of designing the frame of the all-terrain vehicle is nearing completion:

Steering has been done:

When loading the all-terrain vehicle, the shock absorbers sag by 10 centimeters and the steering becomes at a more comfortable angle. Width front axle turned out to be about 150 centimeters, so the back seat of the oka was installed.

Backstage installed:

The shift lever is located under the left knee.

Mounted rear drive shaft:

It was decided to shorten the gear lever:

the muffler has also been simplified:

The engine was installed longitudinally relative to the base, the differential was free, the left drive went to the rear axle, and the right drive, respectively, to the front.

The radiator was moved to the front of the all-terrain vehicle to improve airflow and, accordingly, engine cooling:
The next step will be covering the all-terrain vehicle with plastic, as well as installing combat wheels.

was made like this dashboard:

A modified handbrake cable from a VAZ 2109 was used as a clutch cable, and a standard cable from a dozen frets was used to drive the gas.

The muffler was fixed:

Here you can see the angle of rotation of the wheels of the all-terrain vehicle:

Pictures of diagonal hanging:

Appearance of the all-terrain vehicle:

Lightweight I-324A wheels 850 by 270r16 were installed:

Of the design flaws, the following were noted:
There is too little space to install a normal passenger seat on the left side of the driver, this is mostly prevented by a radiator from the VAZ 2110. Non-factory standard ones were also used cardan shafts, and home-made ones are about 90 centimeters long. the reason for this was that the factory shafts are only 80 centimeters long, and therefore too short.

Suspension test video:

The length of the homemade shafts is about 90 centimeters with a total wheelbase of 240 centimeters. The rear cardan from the field has a length of only 80 centimeters and it is not possible to extend it to the required standards.

In addition, the home-made shafts turned out perfectly, there are no hints of problems with them, all loads are maintained, no twisting is observed.

If you use the rear universal joints of the fields, then the base will be 220 centimeters, in addition, you will have to come up with a connection to the gearbox from the Oki, and because of the narrowing of the base, it will be inconvenient to interfere with passengers.

The GP in the gearbox is not welded, as this may affect the integrity of the drive axles, especially heavy loads will go on the axle shafts of the axles. Since the car will be operated in harsh rally conditions, it is better not to neglect reliability.

the maximum speed of the all-terrain vehicle is exactly 57 kilometers per hour on a flat road, it accelerates about half a minute to this speed, the dynamics are very weak, mainly due to the oki engine.

However, there is enough traction in first gear to slip all four wheels in the mud, but the size of these wheels is not large, only 850 mm in diameter, which will be after installing more powerful wheels is not known.

There was an attempt to install the wheels kf-97, but because of the clearance of the thresholds they do not fit, so the all-terrain vehicle will be finalized to the required parameters.

In the meantime, a short folding seat was made, as well as air intakes for the radiator:

After eliminating minor shortcomings, the all-terrain vehicle changed its shoes to kf-97 wheels, they are much larger than their predecessors, which will have a better effect on the vehicle’s cross-country ability.

Nothing pleases more than a high appreciation of the results of the creation of one's own hands and personal achievements. Motor sport is not only a competition for the professional qualities of racers, teams also enter into a sharp struggle for the championship technical equipment and preparing for the performance of cars.

A special category of sports car racing is occupied by competitions using buggy-type models. Appearing in 1950 as racing on cars converted from worn-out and unusable “passenger cars”, this sport, even with the development of professional samples, has not lost fans who create their exclusive samples of high-speed, highly maneuverable all-terrain vehicles for cross-country competitions from serial products of the automotive industry. Often, to create their masterpieces, they do not use used cars, but rather fresh options with a high supply of unused motor resources.

Recently, interest in this type of machine has increased not only from professional athletes. With the onset of warm days, walking options for “buggies” can be increasingly found not only in off-road conditions, but even in urban crowds. Not one heaped hatchback or expensive crossover is able to provide the youth category of drive and adrenaline lovers, that feeling of freedom and power over speed and space like a motorcycle, scooter, and now a buggy. The appearance on the domestic market of factory serial samples for a wide category of users does not stop those who want to assemble their own unique car from Zhiguli or Zaporozhets parts, practical and reliable buggies from the Oka are obtained.

The pages of various sites and forums are full of these models, because to assemble a buggy from the Oka, an accessible list of equipment is required, and such a minimal list of the most basic parts is taken from the car that you can save on the purchase of a full-fledged car, limiting yourself to the main components and mechanisms from the car second hand. In pursuit of minimizing costs, it is worth remembering the stingy one who pays twice, and not getting carried away with the acquisition of large components and assemblies of dubious quality.

For the do-it-yourself buggy version from the Oka, you can take, in addition to the engine and gearbox, parts of the suspension, the dashboard of a domestic small car will fit well into the “interior” of your car. Some craftsmen manage to remake native VAZ (SeAZ) -1111 ("Oka") disks for wide tires, but it is less troublesome and much more reliable to use wheels from an ATV than to cut out its central part from a disk for subsequent welding two into one.

With an abundance of ready-made drawings of design solutions and instructions on how to make a buggy out of Oka, the beauty of "homemade" lies in the ability to experiment and customize future car according to your needs. But one should not get carried away with fantasies and it is better to give up excessive initiative in terms of ensuring security, the distribution of the masses and the principles of building government bodies. These moments should be taken under special control of observance of quality and accuracy of production.

Usually, as the easiest to assemble, single-seat designs with a rear engine are used. But as a walking option for a buggy from the Oka, double cars look very attractive, because the power of a 33-horsepower engine is quite enough to travel on sand and off-road, not only for two pilots, but also for transporting their luggage, although an increase in linear dimensions will require additional gain body frame structure.

The main skills that buggy assemblers must master are bending the main material for the body-frame of the car. With patience, you can get a fairly respectable version of the buggy, which can not only confirm the skill of the manufacturer, but also perform well in the competition.

As a rule, having achieved the first successful results in the production of buggies from the Oka, homegrown masters of the "garage car industry" do not stop there. Thanks to the conveyor of AvtoVAZ, which has released a huge number of its various options and modifications for 21 years of production of an inexpensive ultra-compact small car, buggy adherents have received a full supply of material for their hobby for many years of creativity.

Cool buggy on OKI nodes

Drawings of this machine can be downloaded

Now about the car. As it was written above, I work at the plant, where now there is a familiar cool turner, where there are some machines and equipment. We have an old 380 V semiautomatic device for personal use and bought a lot more. This is where the idea of a buggy came to mind. There was a desire and an opportunity - cards in hand! Bought on the occasion of OKU already without a body.
Briefly about the first buggy. Until the working condition built a month, in the evenings, until late. I almost didn’t look at the design, I was always tormented by the thought: will it work out? Yes, there are a whole factory of overseers. Will I hit my face in the dirt? There was experience. After all, the advisers will be laughed at. I was in a hurry. As a result, the entire plant "flyed" around the territory on a double buggy. Everyone is happy as children! Participated in the "Russian Winter". Made a lap of honor on the ice, where the races were held. Not on a buggy, of course. People with cameras did not get off my typewriter. As a result, the gas cable was torn off, and then they were called to the circle. In the cold minus 25 with the wind, they urgently riveted the nut at the end of the cable and forward.
In the spring, he took the car to the village, where the whole summer the family was annealed to the fullest. All relatives are delighted: barbecue, wine, racing - a complete fly away!
Leto hatched the idea of a second car. I read the forum, looked at the photos, made sketches. The emphasis is on design. Preferably less weight. Single, because I wanted more sportiness, but not for sports. As a result, approximately what I wanted appeared on paper. I figured out the dimensions for the components and for myself.
I started like the first bug from the first of September, next year. (I will make a reservation right away that I did not take a photo during construction). To do this, I had to bomb the first one, with all due respect for it, and I drove it and transported potatoes with firewood on a trailer from my mother-in-law. I also bought a broken OKU from a friend. Somehow it worked out. So there was something to pick from. I bought pipes, ordered a bunch of "ears" to the milling machine for attaching the levers, so as not to fuss myself. On a pipe bender made over the summer, he began to sculpt a frame. The whole jamb here was that there was no option on paper for attaching the upper arms. I decided then I'll decide on the place. Having done almost the entire frame, I moved on to the front suspension. According to the experience of the first bug, it was necessary to do ground clearance more. This had to be achieved by increasing the length of the levers, since with short levers, a break in the drives and steering rods would have been unacceptable. Well, the stability of the wide gauge has increased.
The so-called salon was made as short and compact as possible in length, but not to the detriment of itself. And the width is generally a fairy tale - you don’t knock with your elbows, you get in (you get in, but you don’t enter - not a bus, however!) calmly. Here it was dictated by the fact that I wanted to place a battery, a gearshift lever, an electrician and, possibly, a tank on the sides of the seat.
There was no place for Baku and he moved behind the partition behind his back. Because achieved compactness, the rake in the plans and in reality turned out to be ahead of the axles of the front wheels. Accordingly, the swivel levers are directed forward, for which the Okovskie fists have changed sides. Fists altered under dvuhrychazhku. Swivel arms had to be bent in other directions.
The seat is homemade. The base is 1 mm metal, sheathed with paralon, batting and leatherette, carefully beloved by his wife.
Well, in general, there are still a lot of problems and nerves frayed by advisers, treated with more than one liter of beer. I'm attaching pictures already posted earlier and new ones. There will be questions, ask. If the computer will function, I will answer. Something has been bothering me lately.

Trials April 27
There was no time this weekend to go seriously. Near the house, a hundred-meter section stormed fast (it’s unbearable to give heat). So far, the sensations are awesome: the suspension wraps around the bumps, it seems now it’s about to throw up, but you pass almost without feeling. It leaves the place fun, enters the turns normally, the brakes are excellent! Then life will show. By the way, after installing the wings, after a few kilometers, the brake hose was worn in front. Touched with the wheels completely turned out for the wing brackets. Remade by adding one more hose from the classics. Now from the caliper they look to the side, not up. While all.

Trials May 3
I drove through the nearby fields on the 99th over the weekend - everything is plowed and sown. But I will find a place to take off. Yes, and time and weather do not allow to come off in full. It's a bit chilly here... Again a test drive near the house. I squeezed everything possible at a short distance - the neighbors' eyes were hatched, enough dope!
Conclusions:
when braking the engine, the turn enters very sharply and confidently - + on this seat, with such a suspension, the vertebrae did not knock off (neither I nor my wife). On a potato field with a height difference of up to 15-20 cm (every 70 cm ... "Do you want to be advanced, this square-nesting") at 2 speeds! - +
after these races, the suspension is in perfect order - +
split gear, adjusted on the camshaft for an earlier opening of the valves, respectively, shifting the torque to lower revs (but reducing the maximum power) does its job - you leave the place cheerfully - +
when pedaling to the floor, the steering is uncertain. Moreover, the greater the speed, the more this effect manifests itself (I attribute it to the feature of rear-wheel drive buggies, with a rear engine) - -

After I gave one salabon a ride not so long ago, when it was in first gear (as if there weren’t any more!) Squeezing out how much the leg pressed everything that was possible from the engine, it looks like it’s time to change the head gasket. Presses into the expander.
I also tend to believe that the eight-carb was not in vain not put on the OKU. I can't complete the setup. With singles, the problem is immediately, I'm not the first. This is half the trouble. configured, but rich mixture. And in the transition between low and high revolutions, failures. I'll try to conjure jets later, after replacing the gasket. For the future, someone will come in handy, perhaps: start with a proven one, and then try to improve it. I liked carb 08 because, according to my own (and not only mine) feelings, the engine becomes more alive. Got the adrenaline. The wife understands, but she twists her finger at the temple - crazy ... "Why are you chasing like that?"
Should I write it, or is it not interesting?

How long the machine has been running can be seen by date and photo :)

If you decide to make a buggy with your own hands, you should know that there are two types of drawings: sports (racing) and tourist. When assembling the structure, do not forget that certain proportions must be observed, the parts must match one another in size, weight, load, etc. A self-assembled car should be light (about 300 kg).

The racing model must have a reinforced tubular frame. A reliable frame is required to protect the driver in the event of a collision or rollover at difficult distances. Such a car is made single. Tourist buggy "dresses" in the body and has two seats.

What tool do we need

Before you start assembling at home, you need to prepare everything you need. You will need a set of tools for work:

Welding(for the initial setting of the frame elements and the final welding of the pipes). Remember! During welding, metal stress occurs. Therefore, make sure that the frame does not lead.

Bulgarian(pipes will need to be cut and the edges aligned for welding).

pipe bender(they are different both in price and in the amount of work that they can perform: manual, manual hydraulic, electro-hydraulic, electric). Pipes will have to be bent in different places, according to the drawing.

Attention! When buying a pipe bender, ask what diameter and thickness of pipes it can work with, what maximum angle bending and bending angle accuracy.

Drill.

Beams and cutting boards(for lifting or fixing various elements during construction).

Milling machine.

Crown for metal.

Frame material:

Pipes(approximately 50 m of pipe, diameter 40 mm, wall thickness 3 mm). Pipes can be seam or seamless.

What we take as a basis

You can assemble the buggy yourself, taking as a basis supporting frame motorcycle, "Oka", "Zaporozhets", "Niva" or VAZ. You need a body, frame, wheels, fuel tank, engine, brake system, shock absorber, exhaust pipe, air filter, steering wheel (can be taken from a racing kart), seat (preferably equipped with a headrest). This is far from full list everything you need.

In a homemade buggy model there will be no hood, trunk, doors. Windshield you will be replaced by a metal fine mesh.

Attention! motor and fuel tank separated from the driver's seat by a partition made of refractory material. FROM right side a fire extinguisher is fixed from the driver (one pipe is directed to the engine, the second is directed towards the driver). Fire protection should be launched from two sides (from two levers).

Motorcycle buggy

If we take an old IZH or Ural motorcycle as a basis, then as a result of the assembly, we can get a compact 300 kg buggy that can travel off-road at a speed of 80 km / h. To assemble a buggy, you will need a motorcycle engine (although this is a somewhat noisy option) and small car parts.

"Oka" is a good donor for the buggy

"Oka" is a very profitable donor for the buggy. The Oka engine is liquid-cooled, and therefore protected from overheating, the hubs are lightweight, steering rack with sufficient margin of safety. For your buggy, the brake system and shock absorbers from Oka are suitable.

Attention! When disassembling the car for parts for the buggy, do not forget to keep the certificate of deregistration.

The seat from Oka is suitable only for extreme sportsmen (it is too hard). It is best to look for a seat with good lateral support during disassembly. At the same time, we must not forget about the headrest - this is the protection of your cervical vertebrae during off-road driving. The buggy based on the Oka is characterized by high cross-country ability.

"Zaporozhets" for buggy, ready-made version

If we take the Zaporozhets as a basis, then this will turn out to be a finished rear-engine model. The engine must be mounted backwards (this will improve its cooling and evenly distribute the weight along the axes). The differential will have to be turned over (swap the right and left sides). Remake the gear shift drive (since the gearbox stem turns to rear bumper from the driver - and this complicates the backstage system).

Make a buggy from a VAZ

If you are afraid of problems with electronics, then it is better to take the carburetor VAZ as a basis. The motor, like on all buggies, is attached to the back of the driver. On the rear wheels for the drive, the front axle shafts and VAZ hubs are used. The axle shafts are attached to the cropped bridge from the VAZ 2106.

Pins on rear axle fixed without the ability to rotate. And the front ones are like in a car. The differential is blocked (for uniform transmission to axles). If you take the front struts with springs from the 41st Moskvich, then stiffness will increase rear suspension. The upper part of the buggy frame will need to be welded from seamless water pipes (section 30 - 50 mm).

Buggy based on "Niva"

If you are going to use the buggy as a transport for fishing or in the forest, then you can take the Niva as a basis. On the basis of the Niva, you can build an all-wheel drive buggy. Both front suspensions from Niva are taken as a suspension (the entire front suspension assembly weighs 130 kg). UAZ tires are put on overcooked disks from Niva. To increase the travel, you can lengthen the suspension arms as much as possible (the track can be increased up to 1550 mm).

Choosing a suspension

Independent suspension is a great option for a buggy. The levers are suitable longitudinal and transverse (you can take the front suspension from Japanese cars). This is a triangular lever: one side of it is attached across the machine through one silent block, and the other serves as a strut that takes on the load. On sports buggies, it is recommended to install a suspension with one trailing arm. This option is the simplest and easiest. With such a suspension, body roll is minimized, and the weight of the machine is evenly distributed.

Good to know! If you plan to cut into buggies on public roads, you will have to put headlights, a bumper, direction indicators (everything is like on a regular car, so as not to violate the rules of the road).

In an independent suspension of the candle type, the elastic element is a spring that moves along the vertical guides at the ends of the bridge beam. If the buggy is on the driving wheels independent suspension, then the universal joint is used to transmit torque from the final drive to the wheels. The most commonly used cardan with two hinges. On simpler structures, one cardan joint is installed in the axle shafts.

Front

The front suspension of the buggy is best done in the form of the letter "A" on long wishbones. It is this design that gives the wheels a lot of travel and allows you to change the angle of inclination of the spring with the shock absorber (thus, the stiffness of the suspension is regulated).

When assembling the pendulum arm, pay attention to the material and quality of the welds, because very heavy loads are coming to this part. Levers count on the maximum width of the base of the letter "A" (this will extend the life of silent blocks). The width of the lever should not interfere with the rotation of the wheel. The disadvantage of the design is that the stroke of the lower ball joint pin in its seat is limited (up or down, it will not be in the place where we would like).

rear

For the rear suspension of the buggy, we select a trailing arm that keeps the wheel from shifting (the wheel sits rigidly on the cardan). True, there is one flaw: the camber of the wheel is changing for the worse.

To achieve stability in motion, variable values \u200b\u200bof the angle of inclination of the wheels are needed. The levers will allow movement in two planes. If on rear axle if there is such a suspension, then the front suspension can be any. If in such a suspension the swing axis of the lever passes through the center of the cardan shaft, then there is no need to install a second cardan at the wheel hub.
