What kind of oil is better to pour in a Zhiguli. What engine oil is best to fill in a VAZ engine? Correct selection of lubricants

VAZ-2106, a car worthy of the Guinness Book of Records, one of the most popular in the USSR and Russia. VAZ-2106 is a distant relative of the Italian FIAT 124 Speciale, model 1972. This rear-wheel drive sedan is known for having a 1.6-liter engine with 80 hp. (record for engines 1.6 produced in the USSR). In various modifications, this car was produced by Volzhsky car factory from 1976 to 2006.

As part of this article, we will try to figure out what kind of oil to fill in the engine of the popular VAZ 2106.

Characteristics of oils

The main classes of oils and their characteristics

Sooner or later, the owner of a used "six" will have a question: - "When and what kind of oil to fill in the VAZ-2106 engine?", Because what VAZ once recommended is no longer produced by our industry.

Modern lubricants are divided into three classes:

  1. Mineral;
  2. Synthetic;
  3. Semi-synthetic.

Mineral oils are made from petroleum using traditional methods and are characterized by the fact that they have a low cost and a significant variation in viscosity at negative and positive temperatures. So at -20C classic mineral oil becomes very thick, comparable in viscosity to plasticine. In fact, this is no longer a lubricant or cleaning of the engine, but simply a very viscous mass.

The raw materials for synthetic oils are butylene and ethylene gases contained in associated petroleum gas, "synthetics", not only have good viscosity-temperature characteristics, but are expensive. Some brands have a pour point of -60C., which makes it easy to start the engine when severe frosts.

"Semi-synthetics" is a specially selected mixture of mineral and synthetic oils, hence the properties that it has: relatively low cost with good enough performance characteristics, over a wide temperature range

Marking according to the international SAE standard:

  • "Mineral" - mineral;
  • "Fully Synthetic" - synthetic;
  • "Semi Synthetic" - semi-synthetic.

If on the package, after the abbreviation of the SAE standard, only numbers are applied, then this lubricant is summer, if after the number there is the Latin “W” - winter, the combined use of numbers before and after “W” indicates that this is an all-weather oil, the first digit means - the degree of frost resistance, the lower the number, the higher the frost resistance, the second softness or hardness reduced to 100C, the higher this figure, the hotter the engine can operate.

How to choose?

From the foregoing, it follows that oil for the VAZ 2106 should be selected based on the area and season in which the car is operated. For areas with a positive average annual temperature, this is mineral oil. For areas with a temperate climate, i.e. the middle zone of Russia, semi-synthetics are enough in winter, and synthetics in the regions of the Far North.

It should be borne in mind that, in modern oils, manufacturers add various additives in order to improve the lubricating, cleansing and restoring properties. E

If a VAZ 2106 was produced before 2001 inclusive, then it has an engine, as a rule, a carburetor, consisting of spare parts designed for other types of oils.

Therefore, whatever these additives do not negatively affect the steel heart of the machine, it is better to buy brands that have been produced for a long time. Usually, self-respecting manufacturers write on product packages for which cars it is intended.

When buying oil, you need to remember that:

  • The engine needs 3.75 liters to operate;
  • It is necessary to change the oil and air filters along with the oil;
  • Do not mix different brands (to avoid the appearance of insoluble precipitates);
  • After draining the mining, its remnants are removed with a special liquid called "flushing";
  • During operation, the engine will “eat” oil, so you need to buy it for topping up a little more than you need;
  • Replacement is carried out, according to the instruction manual, VAZ 2106, no more than every 15,000 kilometers.
  • Before pouring oil into a VAZ 2106 carburetor engine, you need to think carefully about whether this oil can be poured into old VAZ 2106 carburetors, we are talking about a modern “zero” (0W-40, etc.). After all, in times Soviet Union, such oil was not produced. carbureted engine The “six”, which has come down to our days, has a lot of wear, and hence the gaps, therefore, in frost, the friction-reducing fluid will not be enough for normal operation engine.

From the foregoing, it follows that when changing the oil in the Zhiguli 2106, it is recommended to use the following table of the ratio of temperatures and grades.

This car was produced at the Volga Automobile Plant for 30 years, starting in 1976 and becoming truly legendary. Its prototype was the FIAT 124 Speciale, which the Italians started producing just 3 years earlier. By Russian roads these cars are still running. Therefore, the question of when an oil change is required in a VAZ 2106 engine is still relevant - especially for novice motorists.

Criteria for choosing the right oil

Before choosing the most suitable oil composition, you need to know all the information about the car:

The year of manufacture is important, because in old engines manufactured back in the 70s and 80s, valve stem seals, oil seals, as well as other sealing elements made of nitrile rubber. All parts made of this material do not tolerate oils based on synthetics or semi-synthetics. This disadvantage is eliminated by replacing them with imported ones made from rubber. True, this can also have negative consequences - if the motor power supply system is not quite working. The fact is that gasoline, being a solvent, destroys rubber. So here you need to be careful. Also, if the valves have hydraulic compensators, they will need a lower viscosity lubricant. This applies to relatively new engines.

Which motor oil is it better to fill in a VAZ 2106 engine? In order to eliminate the error, you should refer to the service documentation of the car. The allowable viscosity (SAE) should be indicated there, as well as the main characteristics (American API classifier, European ACEA or American-Asian ILSAC). If Soviet GOST 17479.1-85 is indicated, lubricants are divided into 6 categories there:

  • A - used for engines that do not have afterburner;
  • B - refers to motors in which the level of forcing is minimal;
  • B - medium afterburner;
  • G - highly accelerated motors are lubricated;
  • D - the same as "G", only for diesel engines;
  • E - this category refers to powerful, large diesel engines (river transport, stationary installations).

Indexes have been added to categories B, C, D, indicating belonging to carburetor systems (1) or diesel engines (2). If the index is not set, then oily liquid suitable for both types of motors. GOST designations are now rarely used, because they are quite difficult to decipher.

The service books for the "sixes" contain information that is already outdated today. Therefore the choice optimum oil may be among the following brands:

Semi-synthetic oils are well suited, only with the above recommendations for motors, for example:

All these lubricants are distinguished by a low price compared to imported products. If desired, you can use imported oils, the API of which is not lower:

  • SG / CD-II (from 1976 to 1990 release);
  • SG/CE (1991–1994);
  • SH/CF-4 (1995);
  • SH/CF (1996);
  • SJ/CF (1997);
  • SJ/CG (1998–1999);
  • SJ/CG-4 (2000);
  • SJ/CH (2001);
  • SH/CH-4 (2002);
  • SJ/CH-4 (2003);
  • SL/CH-4 (2004);
  • SL/CI (2005–2006)

For 1976-1982 models, only mineral lubrication is required. From 1983 to 1991 – hydrocracking and mineral water. From 1992 to 1994, semi-synthetics are added to the above. From 1995 to 2003 mineral water and semi-synthetics are used. Issue 2004–2006 it is best to serve only semi-synthetics. Oil brands such as Rosneft, Mobil, Valvoline, Total and many others are popular.

How to change the oil in a VAZ 2106 engine

The VAZ 2106 oil should be changed every 4–5 thousand kilometers if the lubricant is mineral. If semi-synthetics - you can replace after 7-8 thousand, but no more.

For worn motors, you should choose a high-temperature viscosity of at least 40 - for example, 5W40 or 10W40. You need to purchase a 4 liter canister, as well as a new one oil filter. In addition, you should prepare improvised materials:

Next, you need to warm up the engine well in order to lubricant poured out completely. The procedure for performing the work is simple, even a novice motorist can carry out a replacement.

  1. It is necessary to drive the car onto a flyover, raise it on a lift or drive into a viewing hole.
  2. The hood opens, the filler neck located at the top of the motor is unscrewed.
  3. Below, on the engine oil pan, the surface around is cleaned drain plug. To do this, use a brush and rags.
  4. A drain container is placed under the plug, then the plug is carefully unscrewed with a hexagon. It is undesirable to drop it into a container with mining. In addition, you need to be careful - the oil is very hot.
  5. You need to wait 15-20 minutes until the grease drains completely. Then peel the plug and screw it back into the bottom.
  6. A drain container is placed under the filter element. The filter is unscrewed with a puller or a screwdriver if the housing is pierced.
  7. The rubber gasket is lubricated in the new oil filter, grease is poured into it up to half the volume. The new filter is screwed into place by hand.
  8. A funnel is inserted into the filler neck. You will have to pour 3.5–3.7 liters of oil into the engine. Periodically check the level with a dipstick.
  9. The filler neck closes, the engine starts.

It is necessary that the engine runs for several minutes at idle. After that, you need to wait 10–15 minutes, check if the liquid is leaking in the area of the drain and filter. Then measure the level again. Add oil if necessary.

Before considering which oil is best to fill in a VAZ 2114 engine, you must first find out - when should this be done? Based on existing technical regulations, then the replacement should be carried out after every 10-15 thousand kilometers traveled.

True, many experts in this field suggest being guided by a different meaning - changing the oil at least every 8 thousand kilometers, or even more often. The point here is that the parameters indicated by the manufacturer (those same 15 thousand km) are taken from the calculation of ideal road conditions.

In general, it is worth noting the following factors that directly affect the wear rate of engine oil (the more there are, the more often the oil needs to be changed):

  • frequent driving in urban areas, especially with a lot of traffic jams;
  • equipping the car with an additional trailer or transporting heavy loads in the trunk;
  • "aggressive" driving style with frequent movement at high speed.

Also, in addition to all this, one should not forget that when the season changes (winter / summer and vice versa), the oil should be changed to a new one corresponding to this time of year.

What you need to know when choosing oil 2114 8 valves?

Asking the question - what kind of oil to fill in the VAZ 2114, you need to clearly understand that the right oil is the key to a long and good work engine, and saving on it can lead to disastrous consequences.

That is why we will consider the following important points that are worth remembering when choosing a new oil in a car shop:

  • you cannot save on the cost of oil, since the cost of repairing an engine can be much higher;
  • in the conditions of the Russian climate and roads, replacement should be carried out at least every 8 thousand kilometers (or better, a little earlier) or every six months;
  • you should not buy the same oil all the time, even if it seems very good - production technologies are improving all the time and some new brand may turn out to be even better;
  • you should buy oils only in trusted stores - now there are a very large number of fakes sold under labels on the market famous brands(the quality of such oil usually leaves much to be desired);
  • you should not choose oils based on online reviews - among them there are many obviously advertising ones;
  • you don’t need to ask the sellers what kind of lubricant you should buy for your car - in most cases they will advise the one that is more expensive or the one that was “stale” in the store.

Thus, it is worth reiterating the importance of choosing correct oil and its timely replacement. But what indicators to be guided by when choosing it - we will consider below.

When purchasing engine oil, you should pay attention not only to such a parameter as viscosity, but also to its origin - mineral, synthetic or semi-synthetic. Despite all its advantages, mineral oil is highly discouraged for use in conditions with sharply changing ambient temperatures.

Operating parameters of oils

Now let's talk about the oil parameters themselves - viscosity, temperature limits of its operation and others. The most important of them is its viscosity (in fact, all other indicators indirectly depend on it). Its degree classifies oils according to a special scale - SAE.

So, lubricants of the winter category - from SAE20W to SAE0W retain excellent fluidity even in severe frosts (the last of them works well even at -40 C). The second category is summer oils- from SAE30 to SAE50. Their operating range is from 0 C to +50 C (in the case of SAE50 oil).

In addition, there are so-called "all-weather" liquids - their temperature limit is between -40 C and +40 C, and they are designated by indices from SAE5W-40 to SAE20W-50. It would seem, why not choose them and stop there?

But there is one important point- such fluids are designed to work exclusively in mild climates, and the indicated temperature limits can only be short-term. Therefore, motorists living in the middle, and even more so in the northern lane, should not purchase such all-weather oils - it is better to purchase special winter ones.

Next important parameter lubricating fluids is their minerality / syntheticity. In total, three main categories can be distinguished: mineral (natural), synthetic and semi-synthetic oils.

Mineral oils are the most viscous and well-coating, thanks to which they constantly clean the engine (albeit not very quickly). But, they also have one significant disadvantage - they can only work in stable weather, it doesn’t matter if it’s warm or cold, therefore, in regions where frosts sharply alternate with thaws and vice versa, it is not recommended to use such oils.

Synthetic fluids are oils obtained through chemical synthesis. They are the most versatile and all-weather. True, at the same time they are the most fluid, due to which even the slightest hole in the engine gasket can lead to its leakage.

Semi-synthetic - are a mixture in certain proportions of natural and synthetic oils. Due to this, they have the ability to clean the engine and can operate in a wide temperature range. Here you can also note the fact that when asked what kind of oil to fill in the VAZ 2114, many experts advise semi-synthetic samples. In addition, this oil is also recommended for engines with a strong resource depletion.

Buying oil, especially well-known brands, is best in trusted places - in order to protect yourself from buying a fake.

What brands should you pay attention to?

Choosing best oil for VAZ 2114, you should pay attention to the following manufacturers and individual brands:

  1. Lukoil Lux.
  2. Nordis Ultra Premier.
  3. Slavneft Ultra 1-5.
  4. Tatneft Ultra.
  5. TNK Magnum.
  6. TNK Super.
  7. Extra 1-7, produced by the Sibneft-Omsk oil refinery.
  8. Yutec Super Navigator.
  9. BP Visco.
  10. Mannol Elite.
  11. Mobile 1.
  12. Mobil Super S.
  13. Mobil Synt S.
  14. Ravenol Turbo C.
  15. Ravenol HPS.
  16. Ravenol S.I.
  17. Shell (Ultra, Super, Extra, Plus series).
  18. ZIC A Plus.

Judging by the numerous reviews of car owners and car repair workers, we can distinguish the following three manufacturers that produce the most suitable oil for the VAZ 2114 injector and the Russian operating conditions of this car:

  • Mobil;
  • Shell Hellix.

At the same time, do not forget about the advice given at the very beginning of this article - to purchase such oils only from trusted suppliers. After all, it is now very easy to buy a fake hiding behind a well-known brand, and the consequences of such a purchase can be very negative.

That is why, acquiring branded oil, you should carefully examine the canister with it - you need to check how clearly the label is printed (blurred pictures and letters can be a sign of counterfeit), check for serial numbers, production dates and other important designations.

In addition, you should not purchase products at too low a price - such sales "from the warehouse" can also cause you to buy a fake or simply low-quality oil.

Useful video

You can find more information in the video below:

We choose oil in the engine from AvtoVAZ in Russia.

Step one- understand the rules SAE J300 :

We determine the boundaries for viscosity and oil film thickness (high temperature viscosity at high shear rate HTHS - column High-Shear-Rate-Viscosity)
for motor oils:

Then with negative and positive temperatures. Here is a screenshot from the manual.

That is, if you want to ensure confident start-up and operation of the engine without damage to the latter, then:

At -30 (start up to -35 is possible) choose oil 0w-40.
At -25 (start up to -30 is possible) choose oil 5w-40.
At -20 (it is possible to start up to -25) choose oil 10w-40.

More precisely, you need to look at the freezing point of a particular oil (We look at the parameter Pour Point, C and subtract 7 10 gr. from the specified temperature and get the approximate pumping temperature).

There is nothing wrong if you pour oil from the same manufacturer in winter with a viscosity in winter 0w-40, in the summer 5w-40 (5w-40 winter, 10w-40 summer). This mode of operation is not a basis for flushing the engine with every oil change.

step two- dealing with ACEA :

Here are the requirements that engine oils must meet VAZ on ACEA:
ACEA A3\B3 and ACEA A3\B4. The rest will be left to the owners of foreign cars.

For oil with viscosity 10W-40

For oil with viscosity 5W-40 The following tolerances may be specified:

Visually comparable API, ACEA, manufacturers' tolerances and make sure that these are not just letters:

You can independently compare tolerances

Легенда: The more shaded, the better the defense.
1.Soot thickening- soot deposits.
2. Wear- general wear and tear.
3 Sludge- sludge (oily mud)
4. Piston deposits- soot in the piston.
5.Oxidative thickening- antioxidant properties.
6. Fuel economy- fuel economy.
7. Aftertreatment compabillity— compatibility with particulate catalytic converter.

I strongly recommend that you follow the links and see with your own eyes whether the oil you choose has at least one real tolerance. Keep in mind if the name of the oil differs in at least one word, another viscosity, at least one letter, this is a different product.

Step Three towards classification according to API .

Currently the classes are: SJ, SL, SM, SN. We don't hit our heads. For engines VAZ all of the above classes apply.

You can check the availability of a certificate by selecting your viscosity.

Note : certificate API(like AvtoVAZ- for 2 years, Volkswagen- 3 years, Daimler-Mercedes-Benz- 5 years) is issued for a limited period of time, during which the manufacturer does not have the right to change the composition of the oil without agreement with the authority that issued the certificate of conformity. That is, if there was once a certificate for oil, then the oil may have a different composition of the base and additives. API certification is mandatory only in America, but if it is obtained for an oil from a European line, the oil can be taken.

Step Four- we understand the performance characteristics of the oil.

Desirable characteristics of the oil for operation in Russia:

For oils with viscosity: 0w-40, 5w-40, 10w-40. And due to the difficulty in understanding the quality requirements by figures from AvtoVAZ, I recommend pouring exactly 40-ku.

Viscosity, mm2/s @ 100 ºC- from 13 before 15,5
(kinematic viscosity at 100°C)

Viscosity, mm2/s @ 40 ºC- from 70 before 95 .
(kinematic viscosity at 40°С)

Viscosity Index160 .
(viscosity index)

Viscosity, mPa.s -30 (-25) ºC6200 at -35 for 0w-40, 6600 at -30 for 5w-40, 7000 at -25 for 10w-40. Less - better low-temperature properties, more stronger oil, less waste, etc.
(viscosity at sub-zero temperatures)

Sulphated Ash, wt. %1.3 . Would you like from 0,8 , and not higher 1,5 .
(sulfate ash)

TAN; mgKOH/g- not more 2,5 .
(acid number)

TBN; mgKOH/g- from 8 before 12 . More is better, but not always. From the high alkaline, the ash content is sulfate and sulfate ... If the value is 6 - 7, then we shorten the interval.
(base number)

Pour Point, ºC- from -30 . Below is better.
(pour point)

Flash Point, COC, ºC- from 220 . More is better. The thermal stability of the oil at high temperatures Oh.
(flash point)

Noack Evaporation wt%- not higher 13 . Less is better.
(volatility, evaporation)

HTHS≥3,5 .
(high temperature shear viscosity)

Step five- mineral water, semi-synthetics or synthetics.

Let's take a brief look at what is hidden under these concepts and consider the groups of base oils according to API:

Group I- mineral oil (naphthene)
Group II- refined mineral oil (naphthene)
Group III- hydrocracked highly refined oil using high temperatures and high pressure - with synthetic properties (naphthene)
Group IV- PAO (polyalphaolefins) or synthetics
Group V- All others not included in groups I-IV (naphthenic base oils and non-RAO synthetic oils)

As a rule, in the European line of oils, under the terms synthetics / semi-synthetics / mineral water, the following is poured in canisters:
Mineral water (Petro)Group I by API
- mineral mixture Group I and PAO synthetics Group IV(from 1 to 50%), or Group I and Group III hydrocracking.
SyntheticsGroup III Group VI PAO(up to 70%) and Group I (up to 30%).

As a rule, in the American line of oils, under the terms synthetics / semi-synthetics / mineral water, the following is poured in canisters:
Mineral water (Petro)Group I or II by API
Semi-synthetic (Synthetic Blend)- mineral mixture Group II and PAO synthetics Group IV(from 1 to 50%), or Group II and Group III hydrocracking.
SyntheticsGroup III hydrocracking (up to 80%), or a mixture Group VI PAO(up to 70%) and Group II(up to 30%).

You can compare the properties of mineral and synthetic oils according to this table, just be careful Group III there is no:

Pour any. The main thing is that the present and without exceeding a reasonable replacement interval. Synthetics will always have higher performance properties than mineral oil. The most important selection criteria are written above. If you are using mineral or semi synthetic oil then just adjust the mileage and change the mineral water or semi-synthetics a little earlier. For example, in the manual AvtoVAZ there are the following recommendations:

I want to clarify for myself that these intervals are mandatory for this reason:

3. Severe operating conditions

3.1 Periodic maintenance under severe operating conditions according to the maintenance card is carried out at your discretion as the owner of the vehicle, if you consider that the operating conditions correspond to severe. Regular Maintenance significantly increases the reliability of your car. Operating conditions are classified as severe if they meet the following:
- Movement with a strong dust content of the surrounding air;
- Driving on bumpy, flooded roads or hilly terrain;
- Vehicle operation at low ambient temperatures;
- Operation of the vehicle with long periods of engine operation at Idling or traveling short distances at low ambient temperatures;
- Movement with frequent intensive braking;
- Trailer towing;
- Operation in the mode of a taxi or a rental car;
- If more than 50% of the time the operation is carried out in heavy urban traffic at an ambient temperature of 32ºC or more;
- If more than 50% of the operating time is driven at a speed of 120 km/h or more at an ambient temperature of 30ºC or more.

3.2 Periodic maintenance when using the vehicle in difficult conditions:

3.2.1 Replacement operations - every 5,000 kilometers or 6 months:
- engine oil and oil filter;
- air filter

I deliberately do not quote specific brands of oils. It is important to be able to choose. And who knows how, he will choose according to the presence in his n.p., wallet and religious views. Trying to count myself smarter than designers engine and pour non-recommended viscosity oil, for example: 0w-20, 5w-20 or 10w-60 you sideways and out!

Motorists should be aware that the durability of a car engine is directly dependent on the quality of the engine oil. The dependence is such that the worse the engine oil is, the faster the car engine parts wear out.

Today, the motor oil market is diverse, there are many offers from well-known brands. Motorists should be aware that three types of oils have been developed for car engines - mineral oils, semi-synthetic motor oils and synthetic oils.

Mineral oils are obtained by cracking petroleum. Such oils have a high viscosity and are mainly used for worn engines on older car models.
Synthetic motor oils are obtained artificially, by chemical means. These oils are used for extreme engine loads. The third type of oils are semi-synthetic oils obtained by mixing synthetic and mineral oils.

When choosing engine oil for a VAZ, it is necessary to take into account the manufacturer's recommendations. In addition, it must be remembered that semi-synthetic and synthetic motor oils contain various additives that can destroy gaskets in older cars. Therefore, it is dangerous to operate the engine of an old VAZ 2101 car with synthetic oil.

A little about the viscosity of motor oils for cars

The viscosity of engine oil has the following designation: 5W-50, 10W-40 and so on, where the first number indicates the viscosity of the oil at sub-zero temperatures, the second number indicates the viscosity of the engine oil at high temperatures.

How to choose the right engine oil for VAZ

Modern stores offer a huge selection of different automotive oils for VAZ car engines. However, it is necessary to focus on the oils recommended by the manufacturer. If the car manufacturer recommends semi-synthetic oil for the engine, then using mineral oil can damage the engine, and using synthetic oil will be a waste of money. For vehicles with more than 100,000 km, it is recommended to change synthetic oil to semi-synthetic oil.

Here is the oil selection table offered by VAZ

This table is a document that recommends the use of engine oil grades in the engines of VAZ 2101-2107 and VAZ2121 cars - these are standard type oils. All of the listed VAZ car models were produced before 2000, and they have an oil change period every 10,000 kilometers.
Here are the main modern brands of automotive oils recommended by VAZ experts:
AZMOL SUPER 15W-40, 20W-40;
TNK Motoroil 5W-30, 10W-30, 15W-40;
LUKOIL-STANDARD 5W-30, 10W-40, 15W-40;
SHELL HELIX 10W-40;
RAVENOL FORMEL SUPER 15W-40;
and many others.

For automotive engines VAZs manufactured after 2000 and developed in accordance with the EURO-2 environmental requirements already use oils of the “super” category. These oils are classified by viscosity, and have high physical and chemical parameters, which complies with international standards SAE J300.

Here is a list of oils recommended for engines modern cars VAZ:
LADA-SUPER 5W-40, 10W-40, 15W-40;
TNK SUPER OIL 5W-40, 10W-40, 15W-40, 20W-40;
LUKOIL SUPER 5W-30, 5W-40, 10W-40, 15W-40;
MOBIL SUPER М15W-40.

For those motorists who prefer fast driving, with increased engine load, it is recommended to use oil with a high viscosity at high operating temperatures, 0W-50, 5W-50, 10W-50 and so on, that is. For a moderate driving style, it is optimal to use oil with a second indicator of 40.

In winter, oil for a VAZ engine with a lower first indicator, for example, 5 or 10, is recommended if the temperature does not drop below minus 10 in winter. For such climatic conditions of operation of a VAZ car, engine oil 10W-40 is suitable.
