In English language? Many of us can answer that this is a special event that is organized in an educational institution at any level (university or school). This event makes it possible to increase students’ knowledge in the field of the subject being studied with a high degree of efficiency.

Let us consider in more detail the question of how to conduct and competently organize this quiz.

Essence of the Quiz

A quiz is a teaching method that, on the one hand, is based on the need to organize students’ gaming activities, and on the other hand, involves studying the material at a higher level of complexity.

The English language quiz provides students with rich opportunities: improving their oral speaking skills, translating words, and trying to solve complex grammatical forms of the language.

At their core, quizzes are a developmental tool, and it is difficult to use them directly for learning. They are usually used in extracurricular activities - during KVN, at computer science evenings or other similar events. The basis of quizzes is a set of questions or tasks. Quizzes and crosswords, unfortunately, are used extremely rarely in educational activities. Working with quizzes when set up correctly allows you not only to develop, but also to educate schoolchildren.

Typology of quizzes

Any event of this kind, including an English language quiz, has its own characteristics.

The simplest typology is based on the method of presentation, since it is based on the way questions are presented: verbal quizzes are spoken, while written ones are presented on tangible media (paper, cardboard, interactive board).

It is for written quizzes that the design typology is used. If the questions are given in the form of pictures, then it is a graphic quiz, if there are only letters and other symbols, then it is a text quiz, and if the quiz contains both letters and pictures, it belongs to the text-graphic type.

The typology of the means used is as follows. If the quiz uses any material objects (for example, to demonstrate or clarify questions), then it belongs to the type of quiz with material objects, otherwise we are talking about a quiz with abstract concepts.

The fourth feature is also quite simple - typology by subject area: depending on the content (content of the questions), these can be mathematical or physical quizzes, quizzes on natural history.

According to the typology of question specificity, if these questions are asked traditionally, then the quiz is considered standard. In entertaining quizzes, non-standard questions are used, or the quiz is a narrative or a complex image to which questions are asked.

Why is an English quiz useful?

The benefits of these training sessions are obvious. Firstly, they are positively perceived by both primary school students and middle and high school students. Secondly, it is with the help of such events that a teacher can develop in students a love for their subject and an interest in activities.

Methodological material for the event

What questions can you suggest for the quiz? They can be very diverse. As a rule, these activities use either some literary work that children have studied in English, for example, “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,” or talk about some region of Great Britain.

There are quizzes that are designed to expand students' knowledge about the history of England, its royal house, and so on.

Therefore, we can conclude that the inclusion of additional material in foreign language lessons is pedagogically appropriate. Organizing quizzes as one of the ways to maintain students' interest in the subjects being studied is very useful. Nevertheless, the teacher is required to have preliminary preparation, or rather, to select additional material for each subject separately (texts of a regional nature, links to Internet sources and printed literature). The selection of material should be based on the questions and tasks that are included in the quiz. An example of this is the English language quiz.

At the same time, it is very important to monitor each student’s understanding of the additional material read, since in some cases the style of presentation may not correspond to the age characteristics and level of language training of individual students. When preparing for quizzes, it is necessary to organize and conduct consultations.

It is important to remember that a quiz about Great Britain is a bright way to help children learn a lot about the country of the language they are learning.
