Datsun brand of which country. He-DO sedan is not an eggplant: a detailed review

Three years ago, the Japanese concern Nissan Motor announced the resumption of production of Datsun cars, designed to complement the line of well-known brands of the company, such as Nissan and Infinity. This video tells not only about the philosophy of the Datsun brand, but also about the current situation in the automotive market in India, Indonesia, Russia and South Africa.

About Datsun

In March 2012, Nissan Motor Group announced the "revival" of the legendary Datsun brand - the company's third global brand, in addition to the beloved Nissan and Infinity. The Datsun brand is specifically designed to meet the need for a reliable car for active and energetic consumers in fast-growing countries. Datsun is an integral part of the history of Nissan and combines 80 years of experience of the best Japanese car manufacturers. The Datsun name reflects the brand's core values: Dream, Access and Trust. Datsun is ready to provide its customers with a reliable car at an attractive, competitive price, in addition, to provide them with affordable and convenient service with transparent pricing. Datsun products are already successfully sold in India, Indonesia, South Africa and Russia!

History of Datsun

The Datsun brand was founded in Japan almost 100 years ago, in 1914, and was originally called DAT-GO (in English - DAT-car). "DAT" in Japanese means "lightning", moreover, it is an abbreviation consisting of three capital letters of the names of partners: Dan, Aoyama, Takeuchi. Later it was decided that the same letters would reflect the main characteristics of the brand: durable (durable), attractive (attractive), trustworthy (DAT).

In 1933, Yoshizuke Ayukawa, the founding father of the company, decided to develop the idea of "mobility for all" and launched a lightweight, economical and agile car, specially designed for young Japanese people. The new brand was named Datson - the son of DAT (son of DAT), and a little later was renamed Datsun. Talented engineers and large-scale production helped to realize the dream of the founder of the company!

On the eve of the official presentation of the Datsun on-DO sedan, we will consider the main features of the model, since the public has a number of reasonable questions. How did you manage to set a price of less than 400,000 rubles for a car from a Japanese manufacturer? Which car factory will assemble it, how will it be sold? Do we really need a new sedan with such a strange name?

Country manufacturer car Datsun he-do and mi-do

The revival of its glorious brand Datsun became known from the leadership of Nissan in the spring of 2012. The Japanese decided that under this name, affordable models designed specifically for the market in developing countries will be released. At the same time, the main feature of Datsun is that a certain car was developed for each of the markets for each country. For example, for the needs of India, where only the price of a car is important, the model has one equipment, but for a Russian buyer it is completely different. Our consumer makes rather high demands on any models, even simple and inexpensive ones. And if we also take into account the difficult climatic conditions ... The Japanese automaker faced a rather difficult task. It was necessary to create a spacious car with which the Russian motorist could move along our roads. This machine could accept domestic fuel and, moreover, had high reliability and low price. Such a car was already in Russia, the Japanese considered, they decided to sell Grant and Kalina under a new name. Yes, yes, you heard right, Datsun is assembled in Russia at AvtoVAZ on the same line as Grant and Kalina!

The head of AvtoVAZ, Bo Anderson, declares with confidence that the car plant will become a powerful enterprise, and at the expense of Datsuns, since they are assembled on the same production line as the familiar Granta. This means that every refinement and improvement of Datsun will soon appear on Grants.

It's no secret that the Datsun on-DO is based on the Kalina and Granta platforms. For what reason did Japanese manufacturers choose it, why didn’t they prefer, for example, B0, which is also quite simple, and on the basis of which Logan is produced. The reason is that the Kalina platform is cheaper, as well as almost all components are of domestic production, and therefore the cost of auto parts will be much lower.

Structurally, Grant, the new Kalina and Datsun on-DO have few differences, the main of which is the interior and exterior design. Technically, these cars are identical, and if the Lada models are supplied with two types of engines - 8 and 16-valve 1.6 liters with different power in conjunction with a manual transmission and an "automatic", then Datsun on-DO has so far only with a mechanical gearbox. In the future, it is planned the appearance of a "budget" version of such a motor, which has an old connecting rod and piston group and a power of 82 hp, but there will be few machines with such equipment. Will the "automatic" be installed on the Datsun? Rather, they will, but a little later.

Not so long ago, the entire top management of Datsun visited our country, and such questions were asked to them quite often. The head of the entire Datsun project, Vincent Kobe, once did not even restrain himself, saying that one should not be so pessimistic.

How much does a Datsun on-Do cost?

You can see the exact price tag and configuration. There is still time before the start of sales, and given the current exchange rate of the ruble, the situation may change. You can expect that for 400,000 a medium-sized car equipped with air conditioning will be sold. Note that the basic on-DO version will have a driver's airbag, heated seats and mirrors. The top-end equipment will receive a lot of additional options: multimedia with USB, a navigation system (the software will be purchased from Citigid), as well as 4 airbags, heated windshield, ESP.

Compared to Granta and Kalina, Datsun on-DO has a modified shape of the exterior mirrors, thanks to which it was possible to reduce wind noise at high speed, as well as to achieve less pollution of the mirrors. Note that Lada will soon be equipped with similar mirrors.

Datsun developers conducted research and found out that the segment “up to 400,000” in the Russian market has its own characteristics. On the one hand, he is “supported” by cars for 200,000 rubles, such as Lada and used foreign cars. On the other hand, there are models priced from half a million rubles - Solaris, Rio and Polo. Thus, in order to achieve success at the level of "400-thousanders", it is necessary to provide car owners with all the options of "500-thousandrs" for 200,000 - 300,000 rubles.

The outlook for the average buyer of a new Datsun sedan is disappointing. In total, about 18% of respondents would buy a Datsun as the first car in their life, and for 20%, the on-DO model could become the second car in the family. Japanese manufacturers are targeting young people, expecting that Datsun owners will be mostly car owners between the ages of 25 and 35, and most of them will have one child. The average income of potential owners is also indicated - about 30,000 rubles per month.

Salon Datsun can even serve as an example for competitors: the finish is made of high-quality, and at the same time, inexpensive materials.

Datsun on-DO will get new front seats. When creating Datsun, the developers planned to make a car that was superior in comfort to Kalina and Grant. To this end, the trunk received as much as 530 liters, which is 10 liters more than the Granta. When compared with Logan, which has 510 liters, and Solaris with 454 liters, the volume is very decent. And this is far from a trifle, since studies have shown that owners of cars in the segment under 400 thousand put the volume of the trunk in 4th place in the list of priorities when choosing a car. For your information: buyers of the 400-600 thousand rubles segment put the trunk volume only in 14th place, and those who want to buy a car for more than 600 thousand rubles do not take this factor into account at all. Datsun on-DO has the largest trunk in the class. The rear row of seats can be folded, and in the initial configuration as a whole, and in more expensive modifications - in parts. It turns out a fairly flat area. The large volume of the trunk served to reduce the turbulence in the rear. The lifting force at high speed also became less.

The largest trunk in the class

It was important to make the Datsun on-DO more comfortable than the Lada models, and therefore the developers improved the soundproofing of the cabin. For example, felt fenders are installed on the rear arches, due to which noise in the rear seat area has decreased. The Datsun was also equipped with improved shock absorbers, different springs and brakes, as well as its own tires. “We researched more than 150 types of tires from different manufacturers and tried to find the most comfortable and controllable models. It turned out that not everyone is suitable for our car, ”said Maxim Sarzhin, chief engineer of the project. Which of the manufacturers was chosen is not yet reported, because the final stages of the car's tests have not yet been completed.

Another significant difference between Datsun and Kalina and Grants is that when buying on-DO, you will not need to visit the Lada dealer network. The domestic auto concern is only the executor of the order of the Japanese for the production of cars, and the sale and maintenance will be carried out by Datsun (Nissan) dealers. The new sedan will be guaranteed for 3 years (100,000 km).

Aren't the Japanese scared?

Indeed, are Japanese automakers afraid to entrust the Russian concern with the production of their own cars, because everyone knows very well that the main problem of Russian cars is far from being constructive. Reliable components and the quality of assembly work - that's what domestic cars lack. That is why, during the preparation of the Datsun project, all attention was directed to the modernization of VAZ production. Already in the fall of 2013, Nissan checked the VAZ conveyor and issued about forty recommendations for improving the lines. Comments were made in a variety of areas, ranging from quality control to recommendations for the use of new boxes for the transport of components.

M. Sarzhin said that the increased trunk will not cause additional problems with the operation of the suspension, since the wheelbase has not changed and the weight of the car has practically not increased.

There is a feeling that quality control and assembly, and Datsun components will be carried out very carefully. The Japanese will not take risks - if the first Datsuns are unreliable, the image of the new brand will suffer significantly, and the image of Nissan will be spoiled.

Therefore, one should not be surprised that today AvtoVAZ was simply flooded with foreigners. True, they do not conduct total control, but are engaged in training. “Based on a computer analogy, the car factory has great hardware but no software,” said Ashwani Gupta, chief program officer for the project. “Thus, Nissan provides AvtoVAZ with software.

Vincent Kobe adds to this: “A car factory today works completely differently. It becomes truly progressive. Soon you will be much more optimistic.”

And indeed, outwardly AvtoVAZ looks more respectable: clean workshops, young staff on the assembly line, a program to encourage employees to improve their skills is working in the team.

Why did the sedan get such a name?

This question worries many. On-DO sounds unusual in Russian. Certainly the model will receive impartial nicknames. But it is useless to ask this question to Russian engineers - the name of the new sedan was sent by the Japanese office of Datsun. The Japanese are sure that the prefix “on” among Russian car owners will be associated with masculinity, and “do” will indicate the presence of Japanese traditions (“do” means “way”).

What are the prospects for the on-do model?

Initially, Datsun dealers will sell only one model. The number of sellers at the start of sales is planned to be 25, then it will reach 80-100. The second Datsun is planned for the second half of 2014. Perhaps it will be a "hatchback". And then, after 3 years, another model will appear. Today it is difficult to predict, but it is possible that it will be a crossover.

The Datsun sedan has a ground clearance of 16.8 cm, and this is with five passengers and 50 kg of weight in the trunk. In the case when the driver is driving alone, this figure is 18.5 cm, which is more than in any SUV.

It should be noted that from Samara to the capital, the project leaders - the head of AvtoVAZ Bo Anderson, the vice president of the automobile plant in Tolyatti Yug Demarchelier, as well as the head of the Datsun brand Vincent Kobe returned in economy class! This is a positive trend, because when the management does not just say that it is necessary to save, but saves itself - this is a great sign! Remember how the "tops" of AvtoVAZ used multibillion-dollar state loans, while allowing themselves expensive travel. AvtoVAZ is really changing today!

The Datsun on-DO car (it is spelled correctly that way, and not “un-DO”, “on-DU” or “on-YES”) has a sedan body. Due to the comfort and practicality of Datsun on-DO, it adequately manifests itself not only in urban environments, but also beyond them. The model was firmly entrenched in the domestic automotive market in 2015.

As the review shows, the advantages of a sedan are suitable for energetic people with big ambitions.

Where is the sedan assembled?

Datsun on-DO is assembled on a conveyor in Togliatti, respectively, and the country of origin is Russia. To develop the model, a separate plant was allocated on the territory of the VAZ factory premises. For the production of Datsun on-DO, the latest welding complexes are used, coupled with robotic welding lines from Kuka. The plant has a robotic painting complex from Eisenmann.

The car is assembled by the hands of our citizens. The plant has a quality system program of the largest Renault-Nissan alliance and it is inappropriate to talk about hack work. The collected Datsun on-DO is sent to the finished product site, where more than twenty quality control posts take place. Only after all checks the manufacturer delivers the car for sale. Plant employees are seriously motivated not to skip defects in production.

The Japanese have no complaints about the assembly.

Dimensions

According to the description, the length of the Datsun on-DO body is 4337 mm, the width is 1700 mm, and the height is 1500 mm. The wheelbase of 2476 mm is offset by the supply of interior space. The car has a fairly large ground clearance of 174 mm. Such clearance will not allow to stall in deep snow. The curb weight of the car is 1160 kg. The luggage compartment allows you to freely transport products and all kinds of little things. The volume of the compartment is 530 liters.

With the advent of the new Japanese small car Datsun on-DO (Datsun on-DO), a dilemma arose: is it worth giving preference to a semi-foreign car or opting for the VAZ Lada Granta? In this review, we will try to determine which of them - Datsun or Grant - will prevail on the vast expanses of Russian highways in the near future.

Datsun on-DO and Lada Granta cars - are they the same in everything?

The thing is that when creating the Datsun on-DO, it was Granta that was taken as the basis. It should be understood that they do not have such big differences, especially from the technical side. Although, of course, each of them has individual characteristics. A detailed examination of each of the characteristics will help us understand Datsun from Grants.

Comparative characteristics

General Similarities

Both cars have a number of common similarities, despite the fact that they belong to the model lines of different manufacturers. The main one is the use of the same platform for the two models, which originally belonged to Grant. Both cars are designed for 5 passenger seats.

Both Datsun and Granta are perfectly adapted to the conditions of Russian roads and have a clearance of more than 16 cm. Due to this ground clearance, bumps and potholes on the roads do not create big obstacles for driving.

Test drive of the car Lada Granta:

A significant drawback of the Datsun on-DO sedan is the lack of a constructive possibility in installing an automatic transmission. Automation will be installed and it will work in conjunction with an eight-valve engine, since sixteen-valve Datsuns will not be equipped at all. Therefore, if a 16-valve Granta liftback or a Datsun hatchback with 8 valves is presented as a choice for a domestic car enthusiast, then LADA will be the obvious favorite here.

Undercarriage architecture

For Japanese developers, the first priority was to achieve full adaptation of Datsun to all Russian roads. And although the architecture itself was left the same as in Grant, after a complete reconfiguration, the behavior on the road of the first model differs significantly from the second. The quality of stabilizers, shock absorbers and springs for the Japanese and Russian models is absolutely the same, only the design of these parts has changed slightly for Datsun. The brake system has also been changed and improved. The vacuum booster and pedal assembly have been improved.

Noise isolation and additional options

Here there is something to compare Grant and Datsun, since the latter has significantly surpassed Lada Granta. The Japanese improved the characteristics of the material from which the mats for the floor and motor shield are cut, the rear wheel arches are equipped with felt fender liner, and additional sound-absorbing plugs are installed. Also, to reduce the noise level in the Datsun on-DO, the shape of the exterior mirrors, gearbox and exhaust system have been finalized.

Datsun on-DO test drive:

In the main set of options, there are no special differences between the models. But of the additional Datsun will be equipped with isofix mounts, a driver's airbag, electric front seats.

conclusions

When asked which is better, Grant or Datsun, it is quite difficult to give a definite answer. Here the decisive role is played by the personal preferences of the motorist, the presence of an automatic or manual transmission, noise in the cabin, price and other factors. Although the Datsun on-DO has a large number of quality improvements and additions, more modern production technologies, it is still not without certain drawbacks. For the most part, your choice will depend on minor details, since in general terms the cars are exactly the same. If the material of the article was useful to you, share your opinion by leaving a comment below.

The Russian automotive market has been flooded with new small budget cars and it is difficult to distinguish a high-quality car from a low-quality one.
Datsun was founded in 1911, and the first car was born already in 1914 and was called DAT-GO.

Datsun is a Japanese brand that was taken over by Nissan in 1934. In the 1980s, Nissan decided to abandon the Datsun brand, and by the end of the decade, cars of this brand were forgotten.

The brand was revived again after 101 years since its foundation - in 2012. Under the Datsun brand, the new Datsun GO was born already in 2013.

Since Datsun cars were created for countries with a rapidly growing car market, the first country where GO was introduced and delivered was not Japan, but India.

Currently, cars of this brand are also sold in Russia, where a large company is deployed to sell them.

Datsun where they collect

Although Datsun is a Japanese brand, the models are built on the basis of domestic cars LADA Granta (Datsun on-DO) and LADA Kalina (Datsun Mi-DO), as well as the Japanese Nissan Micra (Datsun Go), which is currently not for sale in Russia. There is nothing surprising in the fact that Datsuns were created on the basis of domestic Lads, because AvtoVAZ has been part of the Renault-Nissan holding for quite a long time.

Production of Datsun cars for Russia carried out just in our country - like most modern cars. Moreover, Datsun is a budget car and if it were produced abroad, it would cost significantly more. Datsun is also produced in India and Indonesia and supplied respectively to local markets and markets of neighboring countries. So Datsuns, which are produced in Russia, are also supplied to Belarus and Kazakhstan.

Where is the Datsun On Do (Mi Do) assembled for Russia

As we have already said, Datsun cars are based on domestic Ladas, which is why they are produced in Russia. If we talk about a specific region, then this is the city of Togliatti and the AvtoVAZ plant. That is, the same people collect the Japanese Datsun as Lada.

There are not so many large Nissan plants in the world. In Russia, there is one located in St. Petersburg. But it produces Nissan Qashqai, Nissan X-Trail, Nissan Murano, Nissan Pathfinder.

You should not be upset, because the same AVTOVAZ plant also produces Nissan Sentra and Nissan Almera cars. In addition, AVTOVAZ plants meet the world requirements of Nissan and produce much better products than several decades ago.

If we talk about the percentage of domestic spare parts in a Datsun car, then certainly most of them are Russian. The main difference from Grants or Kalina lies in the design (both the body and the interior). In addition, some changes were made in terms of improving sound insulation.

Power units should also be mentioned: on Datsun ON-DO and MI-DO engines of 1.6 with a capacity of 87 or 106 hp are installed. (8 and 16 valve) - similar internal combustion engines are installed on FRETs. There are two transmissions: 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic. Of course, these are far from the most modern units, but they allow you to sell cars at a relatively low price, and also provide reliability.

If we talk about prestige, then the cars are noticeably budget and do not cause any special enthusiasm and respect either on the road or in the city. On the other hand, Japanese cars are valued in our country, and the manufacturer made a bet on this.

Datsun MI-DO engine dropout

The main problem of the Datsun MI-DO car is the problem with the engine falling out. The manufacturer's statement of violation of the terms of use. There were several such cases, especially on the first cars. This is due to the common platform with LADA Kalina, on which a similar problem also occurred.

Datsun Logo

In connection with the revival of the brand, it was decided to create a new logo.

Comparison of Datsun emblems

The classic Datsun logo was based on the Japanese flag and the slogan "Land of the Rising Sun". After Nissan took over the company, the only thing that changed was the word "Datsun" was changed to "Nissan".

In 2012, the logo was changed and the name Datsun was chosen because it is very important to Nissan. The company hopes that buyers will start by choosing inexpensive Datsuns and then move on to more expensive and upmarket Nissans and Infinitis.

What does Datsun mean?

DAT is an acronym for the initial letters of the company's founders, Kinjiro Den, Rokuro Aoyama, and Meitaro Takeuchi. In addition, the brand talks about three important automotive properties: reliability (durable), attractiveness (attractive) and reliability (trustworthy) - DAT. The first company was called DAT Jidosha Seizo.

In 1931, the production of a car called DATson started. Son - from English "son", so the name of the brand can be translated as the son of DAT. Unfortunately, the word "son" is consonant with the Japanese "loss", which could not be allowed in any way, so the car is called Datsun. Since then, the brand name has taken root, and the models have already been called differently, but in the first versions they were numbers: 12, 13, 14. Then 110, 210, 310.

In 1966, it was decided that the models should now be called differently and a competition was held, as a result of which the Datsun Sunny (“sunny”) car appeared.

After the revival of the brand in 2013, the name of the company began to be deciphered as a dream (dream), accessibility (access), trust (trust). First of all, the car was designed for young people.

Datsun plans

Datsun GO is not delivered to Russia. As already mentioned, it is built on the same platform as the Nissan Micra and is popular, for example, in India.
In the modern world, crossovers or pseudo-crossovers are gaining more and more relevance. A separate popular class is the compact crossover. Datsun also plans to release a compact crossover. Tentative name Datsun GO-cross.

Datsun GO-cross - compact crossover
