How to prevent and protect wheel covers from being removed. Types, advantages and disadvantages of car wheel caps

Instruction

To get started, figure out, in fact, the caps on the wheels and why. Wheel covers have two main functions: protective and decorative. The first is excellent in the use of motorists in the winter. Caps will surely take a hit in the form of dirt, ice, reagents and other troubles typical of this time of year. Naturally, they will lose their appearance, but it is much easier and, importantly, cheaper to replace the caps than to purchase them. If we talk about the decorative function, then the caps are purchased as an alternative to alloy wheels. The cost of such discs starts from 100 USD, but caps can be bought at a price of five times less, that is, the difference, as they say, is obvious.

If you follow the instructions, then the scheme for removing the caps from the wheels is as follows: take a jack and use its handle to remove the caps from the wheels.
Do not attempt to remove caps with your hands alone, as this can cause serious and serious consequences.

In order not to damage the cap during dismantling, use a piece of cloth, put it between the wheel and the jack handle. Try to work carefully so as not to damage or scratch both the cap itself and the wheel.

Experienced motorists also offer the following method. Take a screwdriver, hook the ledge with it and start pulling the ledge towards the center of the wheel, while pulling the cap towards you.

Try also using another screwdriver, pry the cap itself with it, that is, place it in the hole between the wheel disk and the cap. However, be careful, carry out all manipulations very carefully, as excessive efforts can damage the cap.

When purchasing a car, each owner takes care of it and considers his "swallow" the best. It is for your own car that good acoustic equipment is bought and fashionable tuning is done, which includes such actions as installing alloy wheels or decorating wheels with branded caps.

Instruction

Often, having installed caps on his car, the owner is faced with the problem of losing them right when the vehicle is moving. Surely, many noticed fallen off parts (caps) on the roadsides. What to do in such situations, how to fix the caps so that they do not get lost on the road, even at maximum speed on the highway or when overcoming obstacles in the countryside.

First of all, we want to note that wheel covers have two important functions - protective and decorative. Thus, caps reliably protect wheel rims, especially in winter, from impacts of stones, dirt, ice, snow, water, etc. and in addition decorate the car with its exclusive look. That is why it is important that these devices are always on wheels, and for this it is necessary to perform a number of simple steps to secure the caps.

Buy a 300mm cable tie. You can buy such a screed in absolutely any computer store or radio parts store. Cable ties are sold in packs of 50-100 pieces. A small pack is enough for you.

Install the purchased caps on the wheels of your car. Remove one cable tie. Pay attention to the locking connection that the tie has, it is this connection that allows you to fix a small twig (cable tie) into the ring and close it.

Insert one cable tie into the hole in the hubcap and slide it until it wraps around the hole in the metal rim itself. Make a loop around the disc and cap. Grab the second end of the tie with your hand.

Connect the lock of the cable tie and pull until it is firmly pressed against the cap.

Take scissors or nail clippers. Trim off the excess tie.

Try to shake the cap, you will see that it is fixed firmly and securely.

Hide the tie lock under the metal disk. To do this, you just need to turn the resulting loop clockwise or counterclockwise.
Ready. Step back and evaluate the work done visually.
We want to pay attention to the fact that it is not worth tightening the screed too tightly, as it will rub the cap and over time an unwanted erased strip will appear on it.

The car cap is one of the most important decorations of the car, creating its style. It is like jewelry for a fashionista, which attracts attention, and also reflects the character and image of the car owner.

You will need

  • - skills to work with the car;
  • - cap;
  • - coupler.

Instruction

Make sure the protective cap is the correct size. Prepare exhaust pipes, outlets and vents for hood installation. Remove from them water, debris accumulated in the holes. Use a suitable method for cleaning the pipe. Cut the outlet hole, it can be done at a right angle, or at an angle of up to forty-five degrees.

Take care of the smoothness and cleanliness of the surface of the pipe that will be in contact with the protective cap of the car. Make sure that all surface coatings, such as paint, are completely dry.

Use the following guidelines when installing protective caps that are between 17.7 and 101.6 millimeters. First install the fixing ring and put it on the pipe. Slide the ring down the pipe two and a half to five centimeters. Then attach the cap to the pipe above the ring. Slide it down the same distance as the ring. Then slide the ring up the pipe until it is almost in contact with the protective cap.

Install hubcaps from 152.4 to 609.6 millimeters. To do this, first put the cap on the pipe and slide it down about 2.5 centimeters. Then thread the vinyl tie through the loop on the strip that attaches to the cap.

Wrap the end of the tie around the pipe, slide it into the slot on the other end. Pull on the end of the tie, but do not fully tighten. Slide it up so that it fits snugly against the cap. Tighten the tie to the end to avoid subsequent displacement.

Then cut off its protruding end. If the overpressure safety device operates, the cap may come off the pipe, then reinstall it. Do not install hoods made of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene or polyvinyl chloride.

Stamped discs are in great demand due to their low price and great practicality. You can change their appearance with the help of caps. But you need to know how to attach caps to stamped rims.

You will need

  • - thin fishing line;
  • - plastic clamps;
  • - scissors;
  • - anti-corrosion composition;
  • - caps.

Instruction

Pick up a cap under your stamped disk. It was originally conceived that the cap was held on the disk without any fixtures. However, at high speed, due to the impact of powerful air currents and impacts of stones, the discs no longer hold tightly and fly off the seat. Purchase caps with a special lid in the center. Install the cap on the wheel and screw the cap on until it stops. She will press the cap as much as possible.

Buy disposable plastic zip ties from a computer or hardware store. Try to find transparent ones so that they are invisible on the cap. Place the cap on the disc and press it firmly. Now rotate the cap so that the holes on the cap line up with the holes on the rim. Pass the end of the plastic tie through the holes in the cap and disc. Pull it out through the adjacent hole, insert the end into the lock and tighten it as much as possible. Attach the cap with four such collars symmetrically relative to each other. Lock the locks carefully. To do this, turn the clamps so that the plastic locks are on the back of the cap.

Buy thin fishing line. Transparent fishing line will be almost impossible to see against the background of the cap, so it will seem that the cap does not hold anything. Install a new cap on the disc. Turn it so that the holes on the cap and on the disc line up. Now thread the fishing line through each hole in a circle, imitating sewing with a needle. After each threading, pull the line as far as possible in order to pull the cap as tightly as possible to the surface of the disk. It is best to thread through each hole. Then the cap will sit on the disc like a glove.

Helpful advice

Thoroughly wash the rims before installing the caps. it would also be useful to apply an anti-corrosion compound so that the moisture accumulating under the caps does not destroy the metal.

Each motorist tries to make his car at least a little individual and stand out from the general flow. There are plenty of options, but perhaps the simplest easy one is to install caps on the wheels.

This is how open caps on wheels look

Wheel covers - what's the use of them?

Car wheel covers are designed primarily to improve the appearance of the car.

In addition to the decorative function, these auto accessories perform a small protective function. They protect the rims from the effects of road surface elements (crushed stone, gravel). Also, the caps partially prevent dust and sand from getting on, which has a positive effect on the duration of the brake pads.

Another protective function of automobile caps is that they are located on top of the disk, and in the event of a possible side impact on the wheel in a collision, for example, with a curb, the cap itself will most often be damaged, but.

Based on this, a number of positive qualities of wheel caps can be noted:

  • They decorate the car well externally;
  • They do not allow dirt and dust to get on the discs and settle on them;
  • The caps protect the discs from the impact of stones flying off from under the wheels;
  • They are the first to take on a side impact on the wheels, protecting the disc itself from damage;
  • Caps are relatively inexpensive.

Classification of automobile caps and their features

All caps offered on the market can be classified according to the following criteria:

Closed metal caps

  • By design, they are divided into caps of open and closed type;
  • According to the material used, metal and plastic caps are distinguished;
  • According to the profile shape, flat and convex are produced;
  • According to the external design, chrome, colored and decorative caps are distinguished;
  • According to the type of fastening, they can be on latches or on bolts, and additional fastening in the form of clamps or loops can also be used.

Now the most common are wheel caps made of plastic. Previously, caps made of metal were popular, especially in the USA. They still do, but much less frequently.

Open hoods have large ventilation holes. Such products provide excellent ventilation of the brake pads. They are great for black painted rims. But if there are any defects or foci of corrosion on the disks, then such caps will not be able to hide them.

Caps of a closed type are produced either without ventilation holes, or with them, but they are small in size. Such caps protect the wheels well from dirt deposits, but do not always provide proper ventilation of the brake pads. In addition, these caps completely hide disc defects. They are easy to clean as they usually have smooth lines, with no sharp corners where dirt can get stuck.

Wheel covers also vary in shape. Some have a smooth outer surface. Such products are adjacent to the disk, practically do not protrude to the side. This is good, because it will damage the cap if the wheel touches the curb. But these caps will not give a significant aesthetic appearance to the car.

There are also caps with a convex outer surface. They give more, but in case of unsuccessful parking, with the side of the wheel touching the curb, the cap may be damaged.

Each type of car wheel covers has its own advantages and disadvantages that affect the choice of the consumer. Below are the pros and cons of choosing for each type:

Part type

Advantages

Flaws

1. Caps of open type
  • provide effective ventilation and cooling of brake discs, preventing their overheating;
  • a wide variety of design and stylistic solutions.
  • do not protect discs from moisture, dust and small foreign objects;
  • poorly mask external damage on the disks, visible visually.
2. Closed hoods
  • high protection of discs from water, dirt and other particles that cause corrosion and premature wear;
  • completely hides existing defects on the surface of the rims from prying eyes;
  • quick and easy to wash and clean.
  • poor ventilation and removal of the generated heat from the brake discs, which is fraught with overheating with intensive use of the brakes.
3. Metal caps
  • high strength and protection against mechanical shocks;
  • reliable bolt fastening;
  • big weight;
  • susceptibility to corrosion;
  • deformation and loss of shape under strong mechanical stress;
  • high price.
4. Plastic caps
  • high strength;
  • elasticity and restoration of shape after mechanical impact;
  • resistance to corrosion;
  • light weight and ease of manufacture;
  • low cost.
  • short service life.
5. Chrome caps
  • aesthetically look beautiful and solemn;
  • the chrome-like coating begins to peel off after a short time.
6. Color caps
  • the ability to choose a body color or a contrasting color;
  • caps "under silver" look impressive and solid.
  • requires care and maintenance.
7. Decorative caps
  • the possibility of implementing individual requests, applying original drawings and signs that distinguish the car;
  • the possibility of using movable slotted discs on the caps, which create an unusual stroboscopic effect during rotation and attract the attention of passers-by.
  • relatively high cost.

How to choose wheel covers

Choosing hubcaps for your car is relatively easy. First you need to know what size wheels the car has. If, for example, 14-inch wheels are installed on the car, then the caps must be selected with the designation R14.

Then you should choose caps according to design features. If the car wheels are free of defects, well painted black and the paint is not damaged, you can choose open wheel covers. In addition, open caps have a larger selection of patterns. Open caps, with an aggressive design, are well suited for sports-style cars. For ordinary sedans, it is better to choose caps with smooth lines.

If the discs are not painted black or they have defects, then it is better to choose among closed caps.

It is important to pay attention to the material of manufacture when choosing automobile caps. Strongly hard plastic will be very brittle and even a slight impact of flying off rubble can damage it up to destruction. But you should not choose caps made of very soft plastic. The probability of such a cap flying off the disk during movement is very high, since, in the case when a non-bolted fastening method is used, the fastening tabs will not have the proper elasticity. Therefore, it is better to choose wheel covers with an average hardness of plastic. You can check what plastic the cap is made of by slightly touching one of the presser feet with your hand. Trying to slightly bend one of the legs, you can easily understand what kind of plastic the cap is made of - hard or soft.

Next, you should choose the caps in shape. It is advisable to select caps that have a small convex shape. They will look better, and it will be more difficult to damage them when touching the curb, since they will protrude minimally to the side.

If the choice fell on bolt-on caps, you should check on the car the alignment of the holes in the cap with the holes in the disk.

To make the right choice when buying wheel covers, you should pay attention to the following points:

  1. Choose a product that suits your aesthetic tastes.
  2. The size of the cap must match the diameter of the disc. It is defined in inches and its value is displayed on the tire label. The most popular and running sizes are R12-R16. It is important that the technological holes and fasteners match the corresponding parts on the disc.
  3. Its reliability depends on the type of fastening. Bolted connection is more reliable. However, it requires more time to install and remove. Snap fastening allows quick and easy mounting and dismantling of the cover. But for its reliable fastening to the wheel, the presence of at least six fastening elements around the cap perimeter is required. The more latches, the more secure the mount will be. To be sure, you can purchase additional brackets, clamps and loops offered by the accessory seller. The stiffness of the fixing springs and the rim must be sufficient to ensure that the latches are securely held in the closed position.
  4. The material from which the protective cover is made determines its durability and service life. It must withstand the mechanical, thermal and chemical effects of external conditions. Caps made from German or Polish plastic are of the highest quality. The next positions in the ranking are occupied by products made in Taiwan and South Korea. They have good performance in wear resistance and resistance to aggressive environments.
  5. It must be borne in mind that convex (inflated) caps look more original and spectacular than flat caps, but wear out much earlier than them.

Fitting and removing caps from wheels

After purchasing the caps, you can proceed to install them on the wheels. Caps that use bolted fastening will be more difficult to install. Since each of the wheels will have to be unscrewed the wheel bolts, then press the caps to the disk, put the bolts in place and tighten them.

The sequence of installation of automobile caps on wheels

Removing such caps is also technologically more difficult, since the removal operation is carried out in the reverse order of the installation operation.

It is much easier to install caps that use presser feet. Before installing such wheel covers, the wheel should be cleaned of dust. The wire rim of the cap always has a small technological bend for the stingray nipple. When installing, it is important to ensure that the protrusion is exactly against the nipple. Further, the cap is centered on the disk and with light blows around the entire circumference, it is possible with a fist, the cap sits on the disk. It is important to ensure that the product is completely seated on the disk, there should be no gaps between them. Additionally, you can fix the cap to the disc using plastic tightening clamps. These clamps will not allow the cap to fly off the disc even if the main fastener is loosened. In order not to spoil the aesthetic appearance, it is better to purchase clamps to match the color of the cap.

Removing caps with such a mount is also easy. It is enough to grab the ventilation holes with your fingers and pull the cap towards you with a jerk. If there is additional fastening with clamps, then they must first be cut.

If you want to know how to install hubcaps on the wheels of your car so that they do not fly off and remain intact during installation - read the clear step-by-step instructions with pictures and videos

Before installing wheel covers make sure their size matches the disk size(Figure 1) Information about the size of the disk can be obtained from the designations available on the tire.

Paragraph 1. First you need to carefully clean the inner surface of the disk from dust and dirt. If there are significant deformations of the rim, it is necessary to eliminate them by straightening.

Point 2. Align the notches for the valve on the cap and spacer ring (fig. 2). The bend on the spacer ring must be turned towards the wheel cover (as shown in figure 3a). Carefully fix the spacer ring into the specially designed grooves located on the inside of the wheel cover latches.

Point 3. It is necessary to adjust the diameter of the spacer ring by compressing it at the valve site if the cap is tight (Fig. 4a), or by stretching it when the cap is loose (Fig. 4c). Proper adjustment of the spacer ring diameter is the main secret of reliable fastening. The small diameter is the main reason for the loss of the cap (because it does not fit tightly in the disk). An excessively large diameter becomes one of the reasons for the clip to break due to the inability to insert it into the disc.

When adjusting the size, do not try to change it much 2-3 mm along the circumference can greatly affect the reliability of fastening

Item 4. Attach the wheel cap to the bottom of the disc so that hole lined up with air vent(thanks to this, the cap will be installed correctly the first time), hold it with your knee, carefully insert the remaining fasteners into the rim. Press the two upper latches with your fingers towards the axis of the disc (Fig. 5) and at the same time press inward on the disc, pressing the wheel cap to the entire circumference of the disc. At the same time, it is convenient to hold the lower part of the cap with your knee (Fig. 6).

The trick is, What if the upper latches are not directed with your fingers inside the disk, and the spacer ring is in a tense state and tries to push them out, then you risk breaking one of the mounting clips. Clip-on clips are much easier to break in the cold, so in the winter, we recommend installing them in a warm garage. If "warm installation" is not an option, simply warm the hoods to room temperature before installation.

Item 5. Make sure that the wheel cover fits all around (Fig. 7)

Dismantling wheel covers

To dismantle the wheel caps, insert your fingers into the holes on the wheel cap and pull them out of the rim with a sharp movement. If the wheel cap sits firmly enough through the holes, you can pass a piece of rope or cloth and also remove the wheel cap with a sharp movement.

Now that you're an installer, it's time to choose the right model.

Domestic car owners are well acquainted with such an accessory as caps for car wheels. They reliably protect the rims from dirt, snow and stones and give the car an attractive and individual look. The choice of decorative caps today is quite wide. But there is one problem: sometimes they get lost. This is quite annoying, because as a result, as a rule, you have to change the whole set. Therefore, a considerable number of discussions on automotive forums are devoted to the question of how to securely fix the caps on the disks.

The simplest (and therefore quite popular) fastening of wheel covers is with the help of latches. 6, 7 or 8 "legs" and the spacer ring included in the kit allow you to quickly install the cap and just as quickly remove it if necessary. However, very often they are removed so simply that it happens spontaneously, on bumps and potholes, and sometimes just like that. In addition, caps are often stolen in parking lots or in yards. To solve this problem, motorists have come up with a number of tricks.

The most commonly used cable tie is plastic clamps. They can be easily found in any hardware store: black, white or transparent, 50-100 pieces per bag. Having installed the cap on the wheel and trying, if possible, to combine its holes with the holes of the disk, grab a couple of ribs with clamps. Then cut off the ends, then turn the clamps a little so that the locks are hidden under the cap. If you choose the right color, such a mount will be almost invisible.

However, if you try, it can be made completely hidden. To do this, you will have to hold the clamps under the stiffening ribs on the inside of the cap, leaving long “tails”, then put the cap in place, clasp the disc ribs with the clamps, tighten them and cut off the excess ends. Someone also likes to use fishing line instead of collars, passing it several times in a circle through the holes on the cap and disk, imitating sewing with a needle, and tying it in a knot. If you need to remove the cap - the clamp or fishing line is bitten with wire cutters (which are good to always have in the trunk for this).

However, it should be noted that not all car owners approve of the methods described above. For example, some people think that collars do not look very aesthetically pleasing. In addition, in cold weather they become quite brittle and can crack. An alternative is to fix the wheel covers with bolts. Of course, for this you have to drill a cap (and sometimes a disk). But the mount will turn out to be reliable, there is no doubt.

Which option you prefer is, of course, up to you. But before installing the caps in any of the ways, do not be too lazy to thoroughly wash the discs. It also does not hurt to treat them with an anti-corrosion compound to protect the metal from moisture accumulating under the caps.
