In 1994, a 12.7-mm V-94 self-loading rifle was created at the Instrument Design Bureau (Tula). After modifications, the B-94 sniper rifle was put into service under the designation OSV-96.

The OSV-96 large-caliber sniper rifle is designed to solve general tactical sniper tasks (destroy manpower protected by means of individual armor protection, lightly armored vehicles, defend coasts from small vessels, detonate sea mines), as an anti-sniper (defeat enemy snipers) or sabotage means (disabling Radar, missile and artillery installations, aviation equipment in parking lots). OSV-96 rifle - self-loading.

The mechanism is gas operated, locking is carried out by turning the bolt directly behind the barrel, which allows you to unload the receiver and make it fold around the front end, just behind the barrel attachment point. .The reduction in recoil when firing was achieved by installing an effective muzzle brake and shock-absorbing butt pad.

The barrel of the rifle is equipped with a long muzzle brake - a flash suppressor.

The bipod is mounted on a special console, fixed in the front (folding together with the barrel) part of the receiver.

The butt has a rubber shock-absorbing pillow.

The rifle is not designed for hand-held shooting and has no forearm. The rifle is equipped with POS 12x50 or PKN-05 sights. At the same time, OSV-96 can be equipped with various optical and night sights.

Shooting at night at a distance of up to 600 m is carried out with an electronic optical sight. A five-round magazine and automatic reloading allow, if necessary, to fire at a high pace.

The OSV-96 sniper rifle is mainly used by the Internal Troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the FSB. In addition, the rifle is offered to all interested domestic and foreign buyers - various state law enforcement agencies.

The OSV-96 rifle is a Russian-made large-caliber weapon capable of hitting targets at long distances. The development of the gun began in the first half of the 90s, and entered service with the army at the end of the same decade.

OSV-96 rifle device

The operation of the gun is based on the action of powder gases after the shot. The designers found an opportunity to compensate for the large size of the weapon, which is inherent in all models of this class. For easy portability, OSV-96 can be folded: the barrel and the gas exhaust system recline to the receiver, and the breech section of the barrel and the box itself are closed with a cover. If there is an urgent need for shooting, it will take a few seconds to transfer to a combat position from a folded position.

To improve the accuracy and efficiency of shooting, a compensator brake was installed, made according to the type of reactive action. It is installed on the muzzle and extinguishes the retraction of the barrel with powder gases after the shot. The standard sighting mechanism is represented by the front sight and the whole, which are folded along the barrel.

The shutter is responsible for locking the bore. It comes on four combat ledges. They are fastened to the breech stops when locking and transfer the power of the powder gases after the shot to the bottom of the ammunition case. The cocking lever is on the right.

There is a special console on the front of the receiver. It has bipods that are adjustable in height. The bipod is responsible for turning the console in the longitudinal plane relative to the gun barrel. This feature allows you to adjust the rifle for use on surfaces with any irregularities. The downside is the attachment of the bipod to the barrel. This negatively affects the accuracy of shooting.

Tactical and technical characteristics of OSVM-96 Cracker:

  • For power, 12.7x108 mm ammunition is used;
  • Barrel length - 1000 mm;
  • Total length with folded barrel - 1,154 mm;
  • The total length with the unfolded barrel is 1,746 mm;
  • Width of the folded gun - 196 mm;
  • The width of the unfolded weapon is 381 mm;
  • Maximum working distance - 1.8 km;
  • The weight of an unloaded OSV-96 sniper rifle without optics is 11.7 kg.

If the arrow does not suit the factory sight, you can install optics for night and day shooting on the Picatinny rail. The DS 3 × 12-50MCT is considered standard, but the owner, if desired, can install another one similar to this one. The choice of sights for the OSV-96 sniper rifle in gun stores is wide.

The first years of production, the stock was made of wood. On modern models, it has given way to high-strength plastic. A rubber recoil pad is installed on the butt, the main task of which is to dampen recoil after a shot, which can reduce accuracy.

How does the Burglar work?

The work is based on an automatic system. The barrel locks and unlocks on its own. The cartridge case of the fired charge is ejected from the gun during the operation of the mechanisms without the participation of the shooter. New ammunition from the store is fed and sent to the chamber under the influence of mechanisms that are influenced by the power of powder gases.

As mentioned above, the operation of automation is based on the power of powder gases. After the shot, they pass through the gas outlet in the barrel and clip, then enter the gas tube and begin to move the bolt to the rear extreme position, putting pressure on the bolt carrier piston.

When it starts moving to the rearmost position, the following happens:

  • The bore is unlocked;
  • The cartridge case of the fired charge is removed from the chamber and ejected through a special window;
  • The return spring is compressed to the maximum;
  • The drummer is transferred to the cocked position;
  • A new cartridge is delivered from the magazine to the delivery line.

When the return spring begins to decompress, the shutter is sent to the extreme forward position. At this time, the barrel bore is locked by turning the bolt. The leading protrusion interacts with the curly groove of the bolt frame. The primer is heated by the striker, which is located inside the bolt of the OSV-96 sniper rifle. Charging weapons is carried out by retracting the bolt frame to failure back and a sharp direction forward.

Checking the quality of firing from OSV-96

Checking the performance characteristics of OSV-96 is carried out with ammunition from one batch. Uses a standard sighting mechanism or installed optics for night or day shooting (depending on the time of day). The principle of setting up the built-in mechanical sight is described in the technical documentation of the weapon, which is included in each kit.

To assess the accuracy, a standard target is used: a black rectangle on a white background. Its dimensions are 25x37 centimeters. It is necessary to place the rectangle at a height equal to the level of the shooter's eyes. The aiming point is the center of the bottom line of the black rectangle. Control point - the center of the target.

We tested at a distance of 100 meters. The rear sight has been moved to the fourth position. The position of the shooter is lying on the bipod with the butt resting on the shoulder. Four shots are fired in a rectangle. Normal accuracy indicators - the dispersion of shots does not exceed 15 centimeters. If the value is greater, four shots must be fired at a new target.

If the result is satisfactory, it is necessary to determine the middle point of impact. The two nearest shots are connected by a line, the length is divided into two equal parts. With this point, connect the hole from the third shot, break the resulting segment into three equal pieces. From the point closest to the first two hits, a line is drawn to the fourth hole, the segment is divided into four equal parts. The point closest to the first three hits is considered the midpoint of the hit.

What conclusion can be drawn about the OSV-96 rifle?

OSV-96 Cracker is able to neutralize light armored vehicles located at a distance of 1.8 kilometers. If an enemy soldier in body armor is in cover and the distance to him does not exceed one kilometer, he can be neutralized with this sniper rifle. The main advantage of the weapon is excellent accuracy for the set rate of fire.

It entered service in the late 90s of the last century. The power structures of our country are used to resolve armed conflicts within the country and neutralize terrorist groups around the world. For the past two years, it has been used by soldiers participating in the Syrian civil war.

Large-caliber sniper rifle OSV 96 on a bipod, with a 12x optical sight

In 1995, the Tula Instrument Design Bureau presented an experimental V-94 self-loading large-caliber rifle, chambered for 12.7x107 and designed to engage manpower in personal armor protection, lightly armored vehicles, conduct counter-sniper combat, disable enemy technical equipment.
The rifle has automatics with a gas engine, the gas chamber is located on top of the barrel. The barrel bore is locked by turning the bolt, while the bolt engages directly with the barrel, which made it possible to unload the receiver. The relatively high recoil energy of a powerful cartridge is partially absorbed by a reactive muzzle brake (and the gases removed by it do not create additional stress on the shooter) and a shock-absorbing nape on a wooden butt. The pistol grip is plastic. The reload handle is located on the right.
Cartridges are fed from a direct box-shaped detachable magazine with a capacity of 5 rounds.
One of the problems of large-caliber rifles, made under a powerful cartridge and designed for long aiming ranges, is their large dimensions. The B-94 was made collapsible - in the stowed position, the barrel with the gas exhaust system leans back and to the right and is pressed against the receiver. In this position, the rifle is more convenient to carry, stack in vehicles. When transported in this form, the breech section of the barrel and the receiver are closed from clogging with covers.
It is possible to use various optical and night sights. In particular. The rifle was offered with a PSO-1M2-02 optical sight with sighting scales designed for ranges from 100 to 2000m. A POS 12x50 daytime optical sight with a 12x magnification is also proposed. It is possible to install a night sight PKN related to night vision devices of the II generation. The emphasis when firing is an adjustable sliding bipod, mounted on a special console under the barrel. The bipod hinge allows them to rotate relative to the rifle in the transverse plane, which facilitates the positioning.
After some modernization, the rifle entered service under the designation OSV-96, it is used mainly by the Internal Troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and special units of the FSB.

The creation of large-caliber sniper rifles was caused by the need to solve a number of tasks, such as the destruction of manpower at a great distance in armor, the incapacitation of enemy armored vehicles, and many others.

Story

Russian weapon - OSV-96 "Cracker" - the first domestic-made rifle in its class. It was developed at the Tula Design Bureau by the gunsmith A.G. Shipunov in 1990. They took as a basis the V-94 Volga rifle, already created at that time, by the same Tula KBP.

OSV-96 was put into service in mid-2000. It is the pride of Russian small arms of the sniper type.

Sniper rifle OSV-96 "Cracker", appearance

It is in service with almost all special units of the power structures of the Russian Federation. It is imported to the CIS allied countries - Belarus, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, as well as to India.

Design features

The design feature of the new weapon can be called the fact that the locking is carried out by the barrel of the rifle. This makes it possible to fold it almost in half when carrying. When folding, the holes in the barrel and receiver overlap from contamination.

  • The bipod and the handle for carrying the rifle are attached to the barrel.
  • OSV-96 - self-loading, reloading is carried out due to powder gases.
  • On the barrel, closer to the receiver, bipods are installed, which are movably fixed so that the rifle can change the line of fire both horizontally and vertically. The bipod can also be adjusted in height.
  • The fire is carried out with a regular cartridge SPTs-12.7, armor-piercing and incendiary B-32, BZT, BS.
  • There is a fairly long reactive flame arrester. The length is caused by the strong recoil of the rifle.
  • Optical and night sights are installed.

The main technical characteristics of OSV-96 firearms

Purpose

According to the declared characteristics, the rifle can stop lightly armored vehicles at a distance of up to 1800 meters, a fighter in a bulletproof vest, located in a shelter - up to 1000 meters. Moreover, with a fairly fast rate of fire, good accuracy is maintained. This just allows you to quickly disable equipment or even just sow panic among the enemy.

Application

OSV-96 took its baptism of fire even before the official introduction into service. It started its journey back in the Volga variant of firearms and from 1996 to 2000 underwent constant modernization. In addition to armed conflicts and anti-terrorist operations on the territory of the Russian Federation, the Cracker managed to take part in the civil war in Syria.

Results

The rifle fully characterized itself only on the positive side, not only by the Russian military, but also by specialists from foreign states. However, like all weapons, it has its drawbacks. But they are few. The main one is a very loud shot. When shooting, you need to wear headphones. It also significantly affects the stealth of the shooter. Another one is that you can only shoot while resting on the bipod. And they are mounted on the barrel, which reduces the angle of fire without moving the bipods themselves.

Large-caliber sniper rifle OSV-96

The rifle is self-loading, the automation works by removing powder gases from the bore, locking is carried out by turning the bolt with 4 lugs directly behind the barrel, which allows you to unload the receiver and make it fold around the front end, immediately behind the barrel attachment point.

Folding is necessary, because in combat-ready form the rifle is very long and inconvenient to store and transport (in this case, the breech cut of the barrel and the receiver overlap to prevent clogging). The barrel of the rifle is equipped with a long muzzle brake - a flash suppressor.

The rifle is equipped with a bipod mounted on a special console, fixed in the front (folding together with the barrel) part of the receiver. They allow you to rotate it relative to the barrel in the longitudinal plane, so that the rifle can be used on any surface.

However, the bipod (as well as the carrying handle) are attached directly to the barrel, which does not affect the accuracy of shooting in the best way. The butt is made of wood and has a rubber shock-absorbing butt pad, it is not adjustable in length and height. The rifle is not designed to be fired handheld and has no handguard.

The rifle is designed to destroy lightly armored and unarmored targets at distances up to 1800 m, as well as enemy personnel behind shelters and in personal protective equipment at distances up to 1000 m.

When firing sniper cartridges at a distance of 100 m in series of 4-5 shots, the dispersion diameter does not exceed 50 mm. One of the disadvantages of the rifle is that the sound of the shot is too loud, as a result of which it is recommended to fire with headphones.

Variants and modifications

  • V-94 "Volga" - a prototype, was developed by the Tula Instrument Design Bureau in the early 1990s and was first shown in 1994. The initial energy of the bullet is about 18860 J. The standard sight was a 4x optical sight PSO-1.
  • OSV-96 "Cracker" - a modification developed in 1996-2000 and put into service in March 2000. The main differences between the OSV-96 and the prototype are the design of the muzzle brake, the shape of the buttstock and carrying handles, as well as the ability to install several different options for optical (POS 13 × 60 and POS 12 × 56) and night sights.

Technical characteristics of the OSV-96 rifle

  • Caliber: 12.7×108
  • Weapon length: 1746/1154 mm
  • Barrel length: 1000 mm
  • Weight without cartridges: 12.9 kg.
  • Magazine capacity: 5 rounds
