On resistors R1 and R2, at the input of the ADC, a simple voltage divider is made. The maximum measurable input signal voltage at point AN4 is 4.096 volts (limited by the use of an internal voltage reference for analog-to-digital conversion). Therefore, the maximum input voltage (VBattery) can be obtained from the following equation:

4.096 V = R2 C * VBattery / (P1 + P2), then VBattery = 16.93 V.

The input voltage range can be increased by simply lowering the value of R2. The zener diode is placed in parallel with R2 to prevent the microcontroller's ADC voltage from going above 5.1 V. Otherwise, any accidental high input voltage could damage the microcontroller port.

The measured voltage is shown on a 4-digit common cathode LED display. The seven segments (a-g) and the decimal point (dp) are driven through a portb of the PIC16F1827. The microcontroller operates at a frequency of 500 kHz using an internal clock source. The ULN2003 assembly provides the correct current for each of the common cathodes of the LED module.
