Each of the manufacturers in it indicates the exact amount of oil to be filled in, the method for measuring this amount, and even the type of oil that is used.

What all their points of view agree on is that the oil should be designed specifically for the motor. There are two types of oils - two-stroke oils and four-stroke oils. Both of these options are used for walk-behind tractors, depending on which engine is installed in the model. Mostly walk-behind tractors have 4-stroke engines, but to determine the type of engine, you should look at its factory marking.

Both types of oils are divided into 2 types according to their composition. This criterion allows you to distinguish between semi-synthetic and synthetic oils, or, as they are also called, mineral oils. There is an opinion that synthetic oils are more versatile and can be used all the time, but this is not the case.

The use of oils is divided according to the seasonality of the use of the walk-behind tractor. So, some models can be operated in the winter season, and due to the thickening of natural components that are sensitive to lower temperatures, semi-synthetic oils cannot be used like mineral oils in winter. But the same oils are successfully used in summer and reliably protect equipment.

Engine

Most light and medium walk-behind tractors are equipped with air-cooled four-stroke gasoline engines. Their maintenance includes the following main activities:
  • Control of the oil level in the crankcase, its regular replacement.
  • Maintenance of the ignition system (checking and replacing the spark plug, checking the gap between the ignition coil and the magnetic circuit).
  • Maintenance of the fuel supply system (checking the tightness of the system, cleaning the fuel and air filters, adjusting the carburetor, etc.).

Parts of a running or recently stopped engine can become very hot, so be careful not to touch them with bare hands to avoid burns.

Engine lubrication system. If the walk-behind tractor was purchased without oil in the engine crankcase, it should be filled during preparation for work. For engine lubrication, motor oils for gasoline engines are used, which have the required viscosity according to SAE and API classification. Specific brands of oils are indicated in the operating instructions for the walk-behind tractor. SunGarden, in particular, recommends using oil of the "SF", "SG", "SH", "SJ", "SL", "SM" brands according to the API classification for the walk-behind tractor (the symbol S means that the oil is intended for four-stroke gasoline engines ) or according to the SAE classification, guided by the diagram below.


Selection of oil viscosity according to ambient temperature (SAE classification)

The first oil change in the crankcase is carried out after 2-5 hours (different manufacturers indicate different times) of the walk-behind tractor. Subsequently - according to the instruction manual (usually after 25 hours of operation). The oil change is carried out with a warm engine (this will ensure good oil flow, necessary when changing it) in the following order:

  • The oil filler cap opens.
  • The drain plug is pulled out.
  • Oil is drained into a previously substituted container (10-15 minutes).
  • The drain plug is screwed on.
  • Oil is poured to the required level (the level can be checked with a dipstick).
  • The lid is screwed on.

For example, on a SunGarden walk-behind tractor, oil must be poured into the crankcase to the lower edge of the oil filler neck.

Ignition system. Motoblocks usually have a non-contact electronic ignition system, which consists of a magnetic circuit built into the flywheel, an ignition coil, a high-voltage wire and a spark plug. The distance between the magnetic circuit and the ignition coil and the ignition timing are set at the factory and usually do not require adjustment. The maintenance of the walk-behind tractor in this case comes down to checking the condition of the candle - every 25 hours of operation - or replacing it - after 100 hours of work of the walk-behind tractor.

To check or replace the candle, remove the cap of the high-voltage wire and unscrew it with a candle wrench. Inspect for the presence of soot and measure the gap between the electrodes with a probe. Depending on the brand of candle, the latter should be about 0.8 mm (different manufacturers give different recommendations). In the presence of soot, the candle is cleaned. The condition of the threaded part of the candle and its skirt is also checked. In the presence of damage (cracks on the body, wear of the electrodes, wrinkling of the thread), the spark plug must be replaced.

When operating some models of walk-behind tractors, it is necessary to control the gap between the magneto and the ignition coil. The figure below shows the clearance adjustment scheme for the Cascade MB6 walk-behind tractor. The required distance between the ignition coil 1 and the magnetic shoe 3 is set by unscrewing the screws 2 and shifting the coil relative to the flywheel.

Fuel supply system

Fuel filter. A clogged filter can cause engine malfunction due to insufficient fuel flow to the carburetor. When checking the condition of the filter, it is necessary to drain the fuel from the tank, remove the fuel filter and inspect it for contamination. Clean and reinstall if necessary.

Air filter. The air filter cleans the air entering the carburetor. When it is contaminated, the qualitative and quantitative composition of the fuel mixture is disturbed, resulting in a malfunction of the engine. The condition of the air filter should be checked every 5 hours of engine operation. After 50 hours of operation, the filter should be cleaned or replaced.

To clean the air filter, you need to remove its cover, remove the filter element (there may be several) and clean it. The cleaning technology depends on the filter material and is specified in the instruction manual. Paper filters are cleaned with a vacuum cleaner and a light tap on a hard surface. Foam rubber is washed with water and some household detergent and dried.

The air filters of some models of walk-behind tractors are in an oil bath or are impregnated with oil. In this case, after cleaning the filter, it is necessary to saturate it with oil again or change the oil in the filter housing.

Carburetor. The initial adjustment of the carburetor of the walk-behind tractor is carried out at the factory. Some manufacturers of walk-behind tractors do not mention at all in the instruction manuals the need to adjust the carburetor, wanting to protect this delicate and capricious mechanism from the intervention of inexperienced users. Those manufacturers that provide for this possibility are limited to recommendations for adjusting the idle speed, the procedure for which is set out in the instruction manual. The essence of any idle adjustment is to achieve stable engine operation at minimum speed. Adjusting the carburetor of a walk-behind tractor according to the instructions for another walk-behind tractor (engine) can lead to engine damage.

Gearbox (reducer)

Gearboxes of motoblocks use gear oils (SAE 80W-90, etc.). The oil level is checked before each use of the machine. To do this, the oil dipstick is removed from the filler hole, wiped with a rag, inserted into the hole again and removed again. The boundary between the dry and oily surface of the dipstick must be between the minimum and maximum level marks. If there is not enough oil, it must be topped up.

The oil in the gearbox (reducer) is changed every 100 hours of operation of the walk-behind tractor. Some manufacturers advise changing the oil after 50 hours of operation. When changing the oil, you must:

  • Remove the oil filler plug (with dipstick).
  • Unscrew the drain plug and drain the oil into a substituted container for 15 minutes.
  • Screw in the drain plug.
  • Pour clean oil into the walk-behind tractor gearbox to the required level (check with a dipstick).
  • Screw in the fill plug.

Clutch

In walk-behind tractors, a disc clutch is most often used, operating in dry or wet (oil) mode. In the latter case, SAE 80W oil or equivalent is used. If an oil bath clutch is implemented in the walk-behind tractor, a periodic oil change is necessary, which is carried out simultaneously with the replacement of the lubricant in the gearbox - after 100 hours of operation.

V-belt drives. The belt tension is adjusted every 25-30 hours of operation of the walk-behind tractor. Belts are changed in case of breakage, cracks deep to the carrier layer, delaminations of more than 1/3 of the belt length and the impossibility of compensating for belt elongation by tensioning mechanisms.

Control mechanisms

Maintenance of control mechanisms consists in lubricating the cables and adjusting the free play of the control levers. The cables are lubricated at intervals of 100 hours of operation, but at least once per season. The free play of the handles is checked and, if necessary, adjusted daily. In particular, insufficiently tensioned cables can cause incomplete closing or disengagement of the clutch.

Operation and maintenance of motoblock tires is carried out in compliance with the usual rules for the operation of pneumatic tires. It is necessary to maintain the pressure within the normal range (in the range of 1-2 kgf / cm 2, depending on the characteristics of the tires used) and inspect the wheels daily for damage and defects. When installing the tire, you need to focus on the image of the arrow on the sidewall of the tire, which shows the direction of rotation of the tire, in which the tread provides the greatest traction for the wheel. Operation of the walk-behind tractor with reduced tire pressure leads to their premature failure as a result of delamination. Increased pressure is also fraught with accelerated wear.

Refueling a walk-behind tractor

When working with fuel, all necessary safety rules must be observed.

The brand of gasoline in terms of octane number must comply with the requirements of the operation manual. For imported walk-behind tractors, it is usually recommended to use gasoline with an octane rating of at least 92. Fuel should be filled no higher than the lower edge of the neck, too full filling of the tank can lead to leaks and a fire hazard.

Before each start, the machine is checked for fuel leaks. Detected leaks are eliminated.

Starting a walk-behind tractor

Before starting the engine, the walk-behind tractor must be filled with fuel, there must be oil in the engine crankcase, gearbox and other components whose operation requires an oil bath, the ignition must be turned on, the gear lever must be in neutral position. Consider the launch of a walk-behind tractor using the Cascade MB6 gasoline walk-behind tractor as an example. The start of this walk-behind tractor is carried out in the following order:
  • Open the fuel cock, wait 2-3 minutes to fill the carburetor with gasoline.
  • Put the throttle stick in the middle position.
  • Close the carburetor choke (if the engine is cold). When starting a warm walk-behind tractor, it is not recommended to completely close the air damper, because. this can lead to an over-rich fuel mixture and the engine will not start.
  • After making sure that the walk-behind tractor is in a stable position, slowly pull the cable until the engine begins to perform a fuel compression cycle (at this moment the cable will begin to exert a little more resistance). Now pull the cable in a quick, continuous motion across your entire arm. While holding the starter handle, allow the cable to slowly rewind onto the spool. Do not allow the starter handle to hit the starter.
  • If the engine does not start, try again with the choke open. If after the second attempt the engine does not start, wait 2-3 minutes to fill the carburetor with gasoline and repeat the start with the air damper closed and with the damper open alternately.
  • After starting the engine, open the choke by turning its lever counterclockwise until it stops.
  • Set the throttle lever to low speed and warm up the engine in this mode for 2-3 minutes.

If starting with the choke closed more than two times and gasoline dripping from the carburetor, close the fuel cock, open the choke and pull the starter cord five to seven times. After starting the engine, open the fuel cock and run the engine at low speed to warm up the engine.

To stop the engine, move the throttle stick to the STOP position as far as it will go. Close the fuel cock.

Motoblock storage

The walk-behind tractor must be stored in a dry, well-ventilated room that does not contain aggressive substances (acids, alkalis). When putting the walk-behind tractor into storage, it is necessary to perform a number of works:
  • Clean the walk-behind tractor from dirt.
  • Drain fuel from tank and carburetor.
  • Drain the oil from the engine crankcase.
  • Having unscrewed the candle, pour 20 g of clean engine oil into the engine. Plug the hole with a rag and turn the crankshaft several times, then install the candle in place without putting a cap on it.
  • When storing for more than 3 months, install the walk-behind tractor on stands, unloading the tires.

Halves 23 and 25 (Fig. 33) of the gearbox housing are cast from duralumin alloy and are bolted to each other through a sealing gasket 24. They have flanges for fastening caps 14 and 21 of bearings with cuffs.
