New Great Wall Hover N3. The Chinese flagship has undergone an update - Great Wall Hover H3

Frame SUVs of the H3 and H5 models form the basis of the popularity of the Great Wall brand. Their sales in Russia are growing steadily.
More and more residents of the Russian outback and big cities are choosing in favor of something that 10 years ago would have been embarrassing to talk about - a Chinese “jeep”.

Have you tried it? Yes, but it's not just that. Over the decade and a half of expansion into the Russian market, the quality of cars from the Middle Kingdom has increased significantly, and buying them no longer seems like an overly eccentric act.

The updated H3 is designed to fuel demand for the brand's SUVs, and for this purpose it has a whole set of important differences from the previous generation of the model.

The visual difference is immediately noticeable - the front of the H3 has a different, more aggressive design.

The “grill” of the radiator grille is made in the best traditions of rampant Asian tuning. Inspires!
There are also differences at the back, but only an experienced sinologist will notice them.

H3 is no longer the modest fellow he was before - the shimmery suit suits him well, and now in the countryside he looks like a city dandy. On the streets of the ancient city of Izborsk, H3 seems to be an alien descended onto our mortal earth - surrounded by a provincial car park tired of life and ancient buildings, it appears to be an elegant prince, attracting the glances of rare passers-by and tourists from neighboring Lithuania.

The interior has undergone cosmetic changes designed to modernize the interior architecture, created in the late nineties by the guys from Isuzu (as you remember, the H3/H5 are based on the Isuzu Axiom).

All materials are of high quality, the joints are even, and there is no hint of the suffocating smell of cheap plastic in the cabin.
One of the main acquisitions of the updated H3 is a new multimedia combine with a large screen, navigation, USB, bluetooth and the ability to connect external devices via AUX. There are even 2 slots for SD cards - one of them is intended for media with maps for the navigation system. And, oh gods, there are finally cup holders!

There is also a rear view camera and parking sensors.

The climate control unit has been thoroughly improved - it has become more convenient to use.

The Chinese on-board computer is a thing in itself. It shows altitude, direction of travel and atmospheric pressure. But you won’t be able to see anything useful, such as average fuel consumption or outside air temperature.

The maximum that is available to the user is a useless indicator of instantaneous fuel consumption displayed on the instrument panel. This is such an interesting set. They say that representatives of the importing company asked the Chinese to finalize the package, but they refused - they say, we know better.

Initially, the Hover H3 is the youngest model in the family, so compared to the H5 model, there are slightly fewer options: for example, there is no cruise control and tire pressure sensors, and the electric driver's seat is available only in the Super Luxe package. Having a more “passenger” appearance, the H5 has a different type of all-wheel drive - TOD instead of the classic Part-time on the H3. An automatic transmission is also not available for the H3. Otherwise, these cars are twin brothers.

You can read more about H5 in one of my reviews - almost everything said applies to the hero of our today's test. Let me say briefly that the seating position in the car is specific - there is a high floor and low seats. But the leather seats are already better than those on the early Chinese - now you can travel long distances in them without back pain.

The rear passengers in the H3 sit quite comfortably - three of them can ride without any problems. The spacious trunk allows the rear seatbacks to be folded almost flat, making it easier to transport rangefinders. However, there are also no differences from the previous H3 and H5.

The main difference between the new H3 and the old one is that a “charged” version with a two-liter Mitsubishi 4G63S4T petrol turbo engine has appeared in the line - almost the same ones are installed on Lancer Evolution sports sedans!

The modification of the legendary turbo heart in the Chinese version is slightly deformed compared to the original engine - the engine on the Great Wall H3 develops 177 hp. and 250 N.m.

A little? For comparison, the basic Hover H3 with the same engine, but without a turbine, has much more modest characteristics - 115 hp. and 175 N.m. And it’s okay, people drive for themselves and don’t complain. Those who are ambitious and handy, themselves improve the engines of their cars with the help of turbochargers.

Now there is no need to invent anything or go on collective farms: the turbo engine is standardly registered under the hood. Go?
After pressing the gas, the engine does not wake up immediately - there is not enough traction at the bottom. But after 2500 rpm the peak torque begins. Confident traction continues until about 5000 rpm, after which there is no point in turning the engine any further. I wouldn’t dare call the dynamics hurricane, but for Chinese cars this is a big step forward - the H3 with a gasoline turbo engine will accelerate to hundreds noticeably faster than the H5 with a diesel engine and automatic transmission. The speedometer needle easily exceeds 160 km/h, but driving at such a pace in a high-frame SUV without a stabilization system is simply scary.

Let's not rush, just note that the power of the new engine is quite enough for any highway overtaking. When you press the pedal to the floor on cold asphalt and on studded tires, the rear wheels slip, even in third gear. At the same time, the sound of the engine does not put pressure on the ears - the H3 has sound insulation, and the cabin is quite quiet.

By the way, about the gearbox. There are as many as 6 gears, which is very useful for a new engine. But you will have to operate the lever often in order to keep the engine in the “working” speed range, avoiding “turbo lag”.

In city mode, I had no complaints - the H3 confidently moves in traffic, and from a traffic light it is able to surprise those who do not expect such agility. At the same time, the engine's appetite is moderate - no more than 15 liters of 92 gasoline per 100 km.

But still, SUVs are bought for driving outside the city, so that’s where we sent our chariots. The country roads of the Pskov region are ideal for testing SUVs - the abundance of potholes and uneven surfaces of various sizes allows you to test all the nuances of suspension controllability.

When moving straight on hard surfaces, the H3 is unshakable. Even despite the empty steering wheel without pronounced feedback, the car clearly follows the trajectory, without frightening it with slips on ruts or uneven surfaces.

When driving very fast on very bad roads, you can highlight some peculiarities of the suspension. The first of them is related to the design of the car - the solid rear axle, which is optimal for off-road conditions, tends to float off the trajectory in turns if there is a grader damaged by holes under the wheels, and the speed is well over a hundred. Cars with independent rear suspension do not have such problems.

For really aggressive and fast driving on graders, the energy consumption of the suspension seemed insufficient to me - just like the H5 model, it is not enough for Dakar Rally style driving. But for most consumers, a soft standard suspension is not an evil, but a blessing that provides everyday comfort. And the craftsmen, as usual, will take up the wrenches and change the shock absorbers to IronMan or Dobinsons - and will bludgeon the country roads the way they like.

Another good reason not to drive the turbo H3 too fast is the lack of a stabilization system. Without electronic assistants, it will be difficult for an inexperienced driver to keep the Hover in extreme modes, into which a powerful engine can unexpectedly take it. The turbine did not turn the H3 into a sports crossover - it is still the same high-frame car, not intended for racing use. And there are only two airbags...
Another thing is soft, viscous, enveloping off-road, smelling of fresh earth.

The new engine, coupled with rigidly connected all-wheel drive, allows the H3 to confidently cut bagels across fields and climb steep slopes at a low speed.

You can have fun to the fullest, even if all you have for entertainment is giant puddles and ruts in a field. Gas to the floor, and let the photographers run away wherever they look!

In terms of cross-country ability, the H3 is not inferior to famous SUVs.

The turbo H3 climbs slopes noticeably better than the version with the base engine.

The reserve of power and torque gives more freedom in choosing the trajectory and allows you to save the life of the clutch.

After the turbocharged version, the regular H3 with a naturally aspirated engine and the usual 5-speed manual transmission seems like a goner. However, those who understand life are in no hurry - and for leisurely movement in space, the base engine is quite enough.

Add to this greater efficiency and a lower price: the “turbo hover” will go on sale at a price of 920 thousand, while the regular H3 costs from 775 thousand rubles. It is obvious that even with the appearance of a turbocharged version on sale, the main demand will still be for the version with the base engine. And the turbine is a pepper, a feature that attracts the attention of customers to the model. After all, “a Chinese SUV with an engine from Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution” sounds cool!

Total

Great Wall H3 new is a worthy result of the evolutionary development of the Chinese automobile industry in general and the Hover SUV line in particular. Today, in terms of price-quality ratio, this is the most affordable frame SUV on the Russian market with a continuous rear axle, rigidly connected Part-Time all-wheel drive and low gear, with the exception of the UAZ-Patriot.

If we take as selection criteria such parameters as comfort, richness of equipment and ease of everyday use in urban and rural conditions, then the scales inexorably tip towards the side whose off-road and expeditionary training has already been well mastered by Russian specialists. And the only small consolation for feelings can be the fact that H3 is assembled in Russia:

Advantages

  • Comfort on any road

  • Dynamics in the version with a turbo engine

  • Six-speed manual transmission

FlawsGreat Wall Hover H3 New (2014):

  • Limited set of on-board computer functions

  • Lack of stabilization system

In the spring of 2014, the first copies of the New H3 SUV appeared in the showrooms of Russian dealers of the Chinese automaker Great Wall - which is the result of a “comprehensive modernization” of the Hover H3 model - it is important that, having changed “beyond recognition,” it remained the same “ successful off-road conqueror."

In terms of appearance, the Great Wall New H3 has noticeably “matured” - its appearance has noticeably added in “aggression and solidity”: a new massive radiator grille, a redesigned bumper and large headlights give the front of the SUV a “modern look with a masculine character.”

But in profile it has practically not changed, you can only note the roof rails... and at the back there are new lights and a bumper with a more pronounced trim (simulating a diffuser).

The dimensions of the “H3” remained virtually unchanged. The length has grown to 4650 mm, while the length of the wheelbase remains the same - 2700 mm, the width of the body fits within the framework of 1800 mm, and the height is limited to 1745 mm. The track width of the front and rear wheels is 1515 and 1520 mm, respectively. The minimum ground clearance (ground clearance under the engine crankcase) has increased to 240 mm. The curb weight of the updated Great Wall H3 SUV in the basic configuration is 1905 kg.

The “restyling” also noticeably affected its five-seat cabin. In addition to improving the quality of the materials used in finishing, we note the updated front panel with a modern center console, in which there is room for a touchscreen multimedia system and a small on-board computer display, located at the very top and able to display a wide range of information, up to altitude.

True, several disadvantages immediately emerged: the “multimedia” sensor does not always clearly respond to weak touches (which is not entirely convenient while driving), and the on-board computer display is so dimly backlit that it is almost impossible to make out anything on it during the day... Otherwise, the interior remained the same – even the trunk has not undergone any changes (it has never “learned” how to create a flat floor when folding the backrests of the rear row of seats).

Specifications. If previously the Great Wall N3 was offered with only one engine option, now there are two power plants:

  • The role of the base engine is played by the already familiar naturally aspirated 4-cylinder unit “4G69S4N” with a displacement of 2.0 liters (1997 cm³), developed jointly with the Japanese concern “Mitsubishi”. The old engine remained unchanged. As before, its peak power is 116 hp. (although advertising brochures most often featured an overestimated value of 122 hp), which develop at 5200 rpm. The upper torque limit of this engine is 175 Nm, maintained in the range from 2500 to 3000 rpm. The base engine is paired with the old 5-speed manual transmission - so all fuel consumption parameters remain at the same level - about 11.0 liters in the city and about 8.5 liters on the highway.
  • A little later, modifications with a “new engine” reached Russia. Well, as “new”... the engine is built on the basis of the old one, but received a redesigned fuel system, electronics reconfiguration and turbocharging from Shanghai MHI Turbocharger Co. (which is a subsidiary of Mitsubishi in China). As a result, with the same number of cylinders and the old volume of 2.0 liters, the engine, designated “4G63S4T”, can produce 177 hp. maximum power and about 250 Nm of torque (but in the Russian Federation it is certified as “150-horsepower”). Paired with this engine is a 6-speed manual transmission with “extended” gears - which should have a positive effect on the cross-country ability of the SUV (the 5-speed gearbox quite often could not withstand heavy loads - it smoked the clutch). As for fuel consumption, according to the manufacturer, within the city limits such a tandem will fit within the limits of 13.5 liters, and on the highway it will be limited to 10.0 liters of gasoline (grade no lower than AI-92).

There were no noticeable changes in the design of the Great Wall New H3 chassis - the Chinese only slightly reconfigured the suspension and replaced some of the elements with “reinforced versions”. As before, the SUV is based on a ladder-type frame made of high-strength steel. At the front, the massive body rests on an independent torsion bar suspension of a double wishbone design, complemented by an anti-roll bar. The rear of the SUV rests on a dependent spring suspension with a continuous axle and a transverse stabilizer. The all-wheel drive system remains the same: the front wheels are rigidly connected, and traction is transmitted to the rear axle through a 2-speed BW 47-60 transfer case.

In terms of cross-country ability, this model has previously shown itself to be worthy - confidently competing with many famous SUVs, and after restyling it is able to “measure its strength” even with a UAZ - the turbo engine has given the Hover H3 additional power, and the increased ground clearance and reliable crankcase protection will allow it not to be noticed most of the road obstacles.

The pre-restyling Great Wall Hover H3 became the first Chinese car to receive 4 stars according to crash tests conducted in Australia using the EuroNCAP method. During the restyling, no significant changes occurred in this direction, so you should not expect a noticeable improvement in safety. However, for a Chinese car, the “New H3” is already good enough.

Prices and configurations. In Russia, the Great Wall New H3 is offered in five configuration options: “Luxe”, “Super Luxe”, “Super Luxe + leather”, “Turbo Luxe”, “Turbo Super Luxe”.

The Chinese included in the list of basic equipment: 17-inch alloy wheels, spoiler, power steering, fog lights, full power accessories, height-adjustable steering column, ventilated disc brakes on all wheels, ABS and EBD systems, front airbags, fabric interior, climate control -control, rear parking sensors, heated front seats, light and rain sensors, central locking with remote control, heated side mirrors and a full-size spare wheel. The top-end equipment version additionally includes: a rear view camera, leather interior, electrically adjustable driver's seat and a multimedia system with support for CD/DVD/USB/Bluetooth.

The cost of this SUV in 2014 starts at 785,000 rubles, but for the “Turbo Super Luxe” version you will have to pay at least 840,000 rubles.

The automotive world is experiencing a time of restructuring to new values. And Chinese industry is doing this restructuring better than others. Just a few years ago, cars from the East were associated only with a budget option for replacing domestic works of engineering.

But today the Great Wall Hover H3 2014-2015 model year is perceived as a status and very interesting car.

Owners of used European and Japanese cars are considering purchasing an SUV, because the price and technical characteristics of the new model make them seriously think about the point of overpaying for other brands. After watching promotional rainbow photos and professional videos about the new product, people find more advantages.

External review - what's new in the design?

In 2014, the manufacturer decided to surprise not with updated technology, but with a beautiful design. Great Wall Hover H3 has become much prettier. Now it doesn’t look trivial and doesn’t evoke any negative emotions.

A new product appeared on the market quite unexpectedly, but already today the new offer has attracted the attention of many potential buyers. Of course, it is extremely difficult to discern the charms of the Great Wall Hover H3 2014-2015 from the corporate photos that have flooded the Internet. It’s worth taking a closer look at all the design features of the updated model:

  • the appearance has become more brutal, masculine and ready to be appreciated by critics;
  • in the design of Great Wall H3 2014 there is now no deliberate plagiarism or obvious simplest moments;
  • The radiator grille and front optics have been replaced - the car has become more dynamic;
  • the manufacturer offers simple, but very suitable for the overall appearance of lightweight wheels;
  • Everything in the cabin remains simple, but the quality of materials has increased in visual assessment.

Now, when looking at a video or in real life, it is very difficult to attach the “Chinese” label to an SUV. Everything looks original and very interesting. The designers did a great job, but we won’t give up the laurels of championship in the Great Wall Hover H3 class just yet. We need to wait for a full update, when a new generation of SUV appears before us.

All-wheel drive and new suspensions are important updates

The engine that powers the Gray Wall Hover has not changed. This is the same mediocre gasoline unit of 2 liters and 116 horsepower. Frankly speaking, such an engine is not enough for a quality trip. But the power unit is configured in such a way that it picks up the car from the very bottom and pulls well up to the maximum speed. A simple 5-speed gearbox seems reasonable to pair with this engine.

In 2014, the all-wheel drive system changed. The company had excellent experience at the Dakar Rally, which provided a lot of information for changing the settings of the SUV. True, such changes also affected the price of the new product. Now Gray Wall Hover starts at 719 thousand rubles.

It is worth assessing the technical characteristics as a whole:

  • good, but far from outstanding engine;
  • standard, fairly high-quality manual transmission;
  • all-wheel drive with excellent settings;
  • high ground clearance and high driving position;
  • soft, but too uninformative steering.

The steering wheel will seem too flexible if you transfer to the Great Wall Hover H3 from a domestic car. The amplifier works too intensively, not giving the driver enough information about the road. For some, this will be a plus, because you get less tired while driving.

In general, the car surprised me with its good assembly and layout. It is difficult to say that the Great Wall Hover H3 2014-2015 model year can compete on equal terms with its rivals in the class, but given the low price, it will clearly create its own class of buyers. It is better to get acquainted with all the capabilities of an SUV on a test drive - this way you will have a complete understanding of the capabilities of the car.

Options are the trump card of Chinese manufacturers

We are already accustomed to the fact that cars from China set certain moods and customer expectations from the configuration. The range of equipment should be quite high, but the main thing is that everything works properly.

There is an excellent array of technology on board the Great Wall Hover. Judging by the reviews of the previous version, the manufacturer has added a lot of innovations to the new product. Some of the most notable things you can check out on a test drive include:

  • a full set of airbags and passive safety features already in the basic version;
  • 17-inch alloy wheels with a simple but appropriate design;
  • climate control with a good range of settings;
  • sensors for automatic switching on of lighting and wipers;
  • a good range of adjustments for the driver's workplace in the Great Wall Hover H3;
  • simple audio system.

The manufacturer offers all this already in the cheapest version. There are two versions of the Great Wall Hover H3 New. The cost of the top version is 50 thousand more than the basic version.

It’s difficult to add what else I would like to have in this inexpensive SUV. Reviews from owners of cars of the previous generation indicate poor quality of the suspension. The manufacturer promises that this problem will not arise in new cars.

Feelings from the trip - what's good?

By taking an SUV for a test drive in the showroom, you will be able to feel quite a significant change in handling and ride quality. You can easily feel the quality of the car at a new level. Even last year's updates to the concern were not so convincing.

But there is still a certain uncertainty that prevents you from pressing the accelerator pedal all the way. The Great Wall Hover H3 engine is not very strong, and the Chinese safety systems, as it seems right away, can fail. But it is worth noting certain improvements:

  • the ride has become more comfortable, the suspension absorbs the impact of Russian bumps;
  • the engine works perfectly with the gearbox, without creating noise or discomfort in the cabin;
  • the long stroke of the gearshift lever is unusual only at first, but then you even like it;
  • on too serious bumps, the suspension gives small shocks to the cabin.

If earlier in the passenger seat of the Great Wall Hover H3 you wanted to grab the handle above the door and secure your trip, then in the current version there are no such shortcomings. The ride is calm and measured, the car behaves on the road like a first-class foreign car.

Let's sum it up

There is no limit to the surprise of Chinese car production. Once again, the update of an SUV evokes a lot of positive emotions. It’s difficult to say what pleased me most about the new version - Great Wall Hover H3 2014-2015, but there are really a lot of reasons for joy.

The price of Great Wall Hover H3 will not change. This can only be affected by currency exchange rate fluctuations and Russian legislation in the field of car imports. The nominal price of the SUV will remain at the same level.

There can be many reasons for buying a car. This is an inexpensive, high-quality and passable high-class model.

In 2010, a restyling took place, as a result of which the SUV received the H3 prefix instead of H2. Among the changes, expanded moldings and a changed location of the front turn signals stand out. The visibility of the driver's mirror has increased, the appearance of the radiator grille and air intakes have changed.

Changes also affected the interior: they began to use hard plastic in combination with leatherette for decoration. The interior has a new center console with a touch screen multimedia system. The wipers now work automatically thanks to a rain sensor. The sound insulation of the cabin has also been improved, which allows you to talk calmly while the engine is running at high speeds.

The SUV is equipped with a two-liter Mitsubishi engine with a capacity of 116 horsepower. Similar engines were installed on the Mitsubishi L200. The engine is ideally combined with the Delphi electronic system, which ensures economical fuel consumption. The engine complies with the Euro-4 environmental standard. In the city the car consumes 12.5 liters of fuel, and on the highway - 10.2. The fuel tank capacity is 74 liters.

The SUV is equipped with a five-speed manual transmission. With this combination of engine and gearbox, the Great Wall Hover H3 accelerates to 170 km/h. All versions of the Chinese SUV are all-wheel drive. All-wheel drive in the car is plug-in (the rest of the time the Great Wall Hover H3 is a rear-wheel drive SUV). The front suspension of the car is independent, multi-link, and the rear suspension is dependent, spring. Stabilizers are installed at the front and rear. The car does not have differential locks, so the car is not always able to overcome rain-washed off-road conditions. Great Wall Hover H3 brakes are disc brakes with a manual parking brake.

The SUV has impressive dimensions: length - 4650 mm, width - 1800 mm, height - 1800 mm. The wheelbase of the car is 2700 mm, and the ground clearance is 24 centimeters. The Great Wall Hover H3 features a spacious trunk of 997 liters, where there is room for a full-size spare wheel. With the rear row seats folded, its volume increases to 2418 liters. Rails can be used to transport cargo. There is also enough space in the cabin to comfortably seat five tall people. The front seats are heated, and the driver's seat is electrically adjustable.

For the Russian market, the Great Wall Hover H3 is available in Luxe and Super Luxe trim levels. The Luxe package includes power steering, front fog lights, electric side mirrors, rear spoiler, vertical steering wheel adjustment and power windows. Only front airbags are installed in the cabin. To assist the driver, an anti-lock braking system, rear parking sensors and a brake force distribution system are installed. The cabin has climate control and a six-speaker audio system. An optional navigation system is available. The upholstery is made of fabric. In a car, you can block the rear doors from opening them from the passenger compartment.

The Super Luxe package is distinguished by the presence of an adjustable sunroof, leather upholstery, a rear view camera and an installed hands free device.

Since the spring of 2014, the Chinese car Great Wall H3 New can now be ordered and purchased in the Russian Federation.

Specifications

Let's talk about the technical aspects of the Great Wall Hover H3 2014. The car remains an SUV (hard-wired front wheel drive, two-speed transfer case), all wheels have ABS and EBD, disc brakes and power steering.

engine

Under the hood of the Great Wall H3 2014-2015 you can find a lot of interesting things. This fall, the H3 New is expected to appear with a 2.0 liter Mitsubishi 4G63S4T engine (produced under license), which produces 177 horsepower and 250 Nm between 2400 and 4800 rpm. The engine operates together with a 6-speed manual transmission, adapted for 92 gasoline and 10 liters per hundred kilometers is enough for it. Now the latest 2014 Hover H3 can be purchased with a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated engine along with a 5-speed manual transmission.
