History of Mercedes ML / Mercedes EmEl

Mersedes-Benz M-class is a family of off-road vehicles with a station wagon body and permanent all-wheel drive (W163 platform).

The M-Class model was first introduced in 1997. These cars, which were developed primarily for the North American market, are produced at DaimlerChrysler's American plant in Alabama. The M-Class combines the most important characteristics of an SUV, minivan, station wagon and passenger car, being a multi-purpose vehicle.

Compact external dimensions and a variety of designs depending on the practical purpose of the car distinguish the M-Class from similar cars in terms of functionality and efficiency. Therefore, the new Mercedes-Benz is equally good for off-road driving, for going out of town with the whole family, traveling or a business trip. The roomy 5-door ML-Class body with additional seats in the luggage compartment can carry seven passengers. The cargo compartment volume is 0.16 m3, and when the rear seats of the third row are folded, the trunk increases to a respectable 0.633 m3. In the 2-seater version, the car thus turns into a spacious van with a capacity of up to 2.02 m3. The car is equipped with a device for transporting a heavy trailer - it is capable of pulling a trailer weighing up to 2650 kg. Maximum speed is from 177 to 186 km/h.

The concept of the car was initially built with the expectation of ensuring the highest possible safety in a collision, which was reflected both in the work on the basics of the body structure and in its detailed elaboration. Based on the company's standards, which apply to all Mercedes passenger cars and have clear differences from many other passive safety standards for SUVs, in severe collisions, M-Class cars provide passengers with significantly above average protection potential. The all-terrain vehicle is not made with a monocoque body, but is based on a frame structure. Two spars and three cross members, made of rigid closed box-shaped profiles, are welded into a structure shaped like a ladder. The body is firmly connected to the frame using ten rubber supports, which dampen vibrations and noise that occurs during driving and do not allow them to pass into the cabin. Thanks to this robust design, M-Class occupants are exposed to minimal risk of body deformation in frontal, rear or side collisions, while maintaining the same size of passenger compartment and providing sufficient space for survival. In addition, the deformable structure of the front part and the low-lying frame are designed in such a way that upon impact they absorb part of the energy of the second participant in the collision.

The ML introduced interesting technical ideas, especially those related to all-wheel drive. Unlike most competitors, the car has permanently engaged all-wheel drive. The company’s specialists abandoned the differential locks in the junction box and in the drive axles, as was the case with the G model, but equipped the car with an electronic traction control system on each wheel, the Four Wheel Electronic System (4-ETS), that replaced these functions. Thus, if one of the wheels slips, traction is provided by braking it, which in off-road conditions gives the same effect as using a mechanical lock. A special “off-road” ABS mode allows the front wheels to lock on steep slopes. Except for the ML230 model, all others are equipped as standard with the EPS dynamic stabilization system, which improves the vehicle's directional stability in any road conditions.

M-class cars appeared in Western Europe in the spring of 1998. The delivery program included three model variants with four-, six- or eight-cylinder petrol engines: the base ML230, equipped with a 2.3-liter 4-cylinder engine producing 110 kW/150 hp. With. at 5400 rpm; The 6-cylinder ML 320 model has a V6 engine with 160 kW/218 hp, which features low fuel consumption and low exhaust emissions. Since the spring of 1999, an 8-cylinder version of the ML 430 with a power of 200 kW/272 hp has been supplied to Europe. at 5750 rpm, also used in the E-Class. The cars are equipped with hydromechanical automatic transmissions (except ML230) with a SPEEDTRONIC speed limiting system; the package also includes independent suspension on all wheels, a frame chassis and a transfer case with a reduction gear.

The cars are equipped as standard with: active service system ASSYST, airbags for the driver and passenger in the front seat and in the side front doors, electric windows and mirrors, ELCODE anti-theft system, alloy wheels with off-road tires 225/75 R 16, power steering, central locking with radio remote control, air conditioning (for ML320, ML430).

In 2000, these cars remained unchanged, but the lineup was supplemented by two new base variants - the economical ML270 CDI and the powerful ML55 AMG. The first is equipped with an in-line 5-cylinder 2.7-liter turbocharged diesel engine with a Common-Rail system producing 163 hp. and a manual 6-speed gearbox. It has higher dynamic qualities than the petrol ML230, and is about a quarter more economical. The ML55 AMG with a 5.4-liter V8 closes the lineup. The car has a top speed of 232 km/h. The chassis of this car has the unique qualities of a sports station wagon. However, it contains the ability to confidently drive on bad roads.

The first modernization of ML-class all-terrain vehicles was carried out in the summer of 2001. In the post-restyling version, the ML has come closer to its German relatives in terms of the level of luxury equipment, the feeling of comfort and quality and thoughtful design. Recognized by the Americans as one of the safest off-roaders, the ML received 8 airbags, of which only the rear side ones are not supplied as standard.

The appearance of the car has been updated due to a modified front bumper, which began to consist of two parts, new lighting equipment in the form of crystal-optical headlights, rear-view mirrors with duplicate turn signals have also been added, and 17-inch wheels are now standard for all ML 6-spoke pattern. The interior of the cabin has changed: all modifications now include a wooden center console trim, automatic climate control with a sensor that records solar radiation, and automatic headlights. The list of custom equipment is small: bi-xenon headlights, parking radars, multimedia COMAND with the ability to process SMS messages on the screen and two folding additional passenger seats in the trunk.

The main changes are under the hood, where two V8s moved from the S-class engine compartment: the previous ML430 was replaced by a more powerful ML500 with a 5-liter gasoline V8, reduced from 306 to 292 hp. power, allowing it to develop up to 222 km/h, as well as a powerful 250-horsepower 4-liter turbodiesel, the most powerful and highest-torque passenger diesel on the planet. This ML400 CDI reaches 213 km/h and accelerates from zero to 10 km/h in 8.1 seconds versus 7.7 for the ML500. The 5-liter easily makes short work of a heavy car, losing only one second in acceleration to the 347-horsepower top model ML55 from tuning specialist AMG (ML55, by the way, is extremely popular - it is the best-selling of all AMG cars). The rest of the power units have not changed.

In 2005, a new generation of M-Class SUVs was shown at the January NAIAS in Detroit. Serial production started in March 2005 at factories in Tuscaloosa (USA). The body of this generation has become 15 cm longer and 7 cm wider than its predecessor. Appearance has changed quite significantly. The corners have been smoothed out. Aerodynamics have improved significantly. The drag coefficient is 15% better than before. The interior of the new ML exudes German order and modesty. Everything is in its place, everything is as it should be. The interior is completely new

The new model is offered in two different versions - a basic crossover with spring suspension, a permanent all-wheel drive system and an upgraded 4-ETS electronic traction control system, or an off-road Pro Off-Road version with Airmatic air suspension (4 fixed body positions, maximum ground clearance 291 mm), an additional transfer case box and locking (automatic using a multi-disc clutch or forced) of the central and rear differentials.

The equipment includes the latest active and passive safety systems, including Neck-Pro, six PB and Pre-Safe, “off-road” DSR (hill descent) systems, optional Thermotronic multi-zone climate control, Direct Select multifunction steering wheel, new Comand APS system (DVD, navigation, TV tuner), luggage compartment organizer (trunk volume from 551 to 2050 l) and Keyless Go system.

The range of engines (three of them, V6 and turbodiesels, completely new) for 2006: petrol ML350 (3.5 l V6 24V, 272 hp, 350 Nm) and ML500 (5.0 l V8 24V, 306 hp. s., 460 Nbm); turbodiesel 3.0 l V6 24V with a new generation CR system in the ML280 CDI (190 hp, 440 Nbm) and ML320 CDI (224 hp, 510 Nbm) versions. The five-liter, 306-horsepower V8 is capable of accelerating the car to hundreds in 6.9 seconds, which is almost a second faster than the engine of the previous ML. The new engine was made more powerful by 14 hp and torque by 20 Nm, while maintaining the same fuel consumption.

All MLs now come standard with the seven-speed 7G-Tronic automatic transmission. This is a big step forward. The gearbox knob is hidden under the steering wheel and has two positions - to turn the wheels forward and backward. There is no parking provision at all. It is replaced by a button on this handle. Everything is simple and logical.

For an additional fee, a factory tuning package from AMG is offered. Styling for the new Mercedes M-Class includes front and rear spoilers entirely in body color and designed in the characteristic AMG style. Thanks to the new front spoiler, with its emphasized angularity and vertical inserts in polished steel, the front end of the new Mercedes M-Class appears wider and lower. Large round fog lights in a chrome frame with an active cornering light system (optional equipment) give the entire appearance of the car extraordinary expressiveness. Enlarged air intakes and original underrun protection.

Four large air intakes, covered with a black racing car mesh, underscore the dynamic character of the AMG styling. The protective trim, whose design is dominated by vertical lines, places additional emphasis on the powerful and durable character of the SUV. The rear bumper also features AMG styling: the rear skid plate has the same design as the front one. The raised cutouts for the exhaust pipes of the dual-flow exhaust system make the rear of the Mercedes ML AMG visually even wider and more muscular. A special polished steel trim protects the rear spoiler from scratches when loading and unloading luggage.

The perfect complement to the new AMG styling are the AMG light-alloy wheels in size 8.5 x 19, painted silver. Featuring a classic five-spoke design, all AMG wheels are equipped with low-profile tires in size 255/50 R 19. Not only do they perfectly fill the wheel arches, which adds to the sportiness of the car, but they also further enhance the agility and handling of the new M-Class.

As a result of the 2008 facelift, the M-Class received a new front bumper, headlights with a stepped lower line and a more aggressive grille. The rear of the car has not changed so significantly: a new bumper with reflective stripes and smoky glass headlights. But at the same time, a new item has appeared among the options - rear LED optics. The 2008 version of the M-Class also received new large rear-view mirrors, thereby eliminating previous complaints about rear visibility. And with each successive restyling, the appearance of the M-Class becomes more and more courageous, charismatic and expressive.

There are few changes in the interior of the car; they mainly affected the combination of upholstery materials (for example, it became possible to order a car with a two-tone interior). The most noticeable detail of the updated interior is the steering wheel with chrome inserts. Moreover, the main change from an ergonomic point of view is the appearance in it of special “petals” responsible for controlling the automatic transmission. Forcing gear selection has become much more convenient compared to the buttons on the back of the steering wheel spokes on the previous version.

In addition to purely cosmetic changes, the flagship ML500 also received a more powerful 388-horsepower 5.5-liter engine. The same one that has been installed on the senior GL500 model for two years.

Many options of the pre-restyling version are now included in the basic equipment. In particular, this is the proprietary PRE-SAFE preventive passive safety system and NECK-PRO active head restraints. Changes have also affected the field of entertainment electronics. The M-Class was equipped with a new telematics system. Serial versions of the SUV began to be equipped with a hands-free device with a Bluetooth wireless interface and an Aux-In connector for connecting audio devices. It will also be possible to order a new multimedia interface, which will allow you to connect external music storage media with the on-board electronics and control system of the SUV. There are three options for a multimedia system to choose from, all of them with a color display and a keypad for entering telephone numbers and radio frequencies. In addition, Mercedes is offering another option for the M-Class for the first time – the LinguaTronic voice control system.

At the International Motor Show in Frankfurt in September 2011, the world premiere of the third generation M-Class SUV took place. The car is built on a modernized platform of the previous generation and, with the same wheelbase of 2,915 mm, is 24 mm longer (4,804 mm), 16 mm wider (1,926 mm) and 19 mm lower (1,796 mm). At the same time, the use of light alloys, both in the manufacture of the engine and body parts, made it possible to slightly reduce the overall weight of the SUV. The large dimensions of the car have a good effect on comfort, interior and trunk capacity. The trunk volume of the Mercedes ML-350 can reach 2 cubic meters. The appearance of the new ML-Class 2012 is evolutionary in nature - the car received a massive front bumper, an enlarged radiator grille and optics with smoother outlines. Relief stampings appeared on the sides of the car, and new rear lights of a different shape became larger. The new product is offered with wheels with an updated design, available in radii from 17 to 21 inches.

The interior of the 2012 Mercedes ML-Class has been transformed more noticeably. Along with improved finishing materials, the design of the front panel has also changed. The middle part of the panel is made of wood. The center console has become wider and sports aluminum inserts. The proprietary COMAND control system has also been updated, and customers can optionally order a panoramic sunroof.

At first, the new Mercedes ML 2012 will be offered with three different engines. The most modest of them is the 2.1-liter four-cylinder diesel on the ML 250 Bluetec version with 204 hp. (500 Nm). The more powerful version of the ML 350 Bluetec SUV is equipped with a 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine producing 258 hp. (619 Nm), accelerating the car from zero to hundreds in 7.5 seconds and providing a top speed of 224 km/h. Finally, the top version at the moment is the ML 350 BlueEfficiency with a 306-horsepower petrol six, producing 370 Nm of maximum torque and allowing a speed of 235 km/h. Regardless of the engine type chosen, they are all paired with a seven-speed 7G-Tronic Plus automatic transmission and have the proprietary 4Matic all-wheel drive system.

The latest generation of Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG, as the creators assure, has a huge number of advantages, the most significant of which is a significant reduction in fuel consumption. Compared to the previous generation, fuel consumption has decreased by more than thirty percent. The car consumes only 14 liters of fuel per hundred kilometers. Under the hood is a V8 engine with a volume of five and a half liters, and the maximum power it can develop is five hundred and fifty horsepower. In addition to such a powerful engine, there is a seven-speed automatic transmission. Acceleration to 100 km/h takes less than five seconds. The maximum speed is 250 kilometers per hour.

Of course, Mercedes pays great attention to safety, so the new 2012 M-Class is equipped with a variety of different systems, including night vision with pedestrian detection, driver fatigue detection, blind spot monitoring, automatic braking in dangerous situations, Lane Keeping Assist, Pre-Safe Lighting Control, Variable Cruise Control, and many others.

In turn, the comfort of the driver and passengers is taken care of by the suspension, which dampens all unwanted vibrations, and the optionally available Airmatic suspension, which has six different operating options, depending on the type of road surface.

Improved car model Mercedes ML W164 was discontinued several years ago. However, those copies of this model that appeared on the market much earlier cost more than two new Dusters. Therefore, now we will figure out whether it is worth paying crazy money for a used Mercedes ML.

The Mercedes W164 body is characterized by so-called exemplary survivability. Its outer surface is covered with high-quality paint and varnish, such a paint coating is durable and long-lasting. Metal, as is typical for Mercedes, is also durable and properly processed, therefore, the owner of this model can forget about the word “corrosion” for a long time. Even the chrome on the outside looks presentable; of course, the chrome on older examples slightly loses its luster, but this is all an everyday matter. All in all, Mercedes ML body deserves respect.

The interior of the car is no less attractive. So, you need to try hard to at least somehow wear out the interior trim, because it is made of reliable and durable materials. Only the trunk curtain and the backs of the rear seats can creak in the cabin, and only after a long time. The interior is durable, so only the appearance of the wooden finish deteriorates - cracks form on the varnish surface.

The only sore subject is the electronics installed in the cabin. Cars that were produced for the first time sometimes experience interruptions in the functioning of the climate control system. The driver needs to either reflash or install another KLA control unit, which, by the way, is not cheap - about 1000 euros. In addition, after several years of operation, the heater motor, as well as the air damper servos, begin to act up. Replacing these parts will cost the car owner approximately one thousand euros.

After some time, you will notice that the audio system can be “greedy” at times and will not release discs. Therefore, you will have to install a brand new CD changer. Quite often pressing the buttons located on the steering wheel, the sound signal stops responding, and therefore you have to install a new steering column wiring harness.

The real scourge for drivers is oxidized electronic circuit boards. At first glance, a minor nuisance, consisting of a deteriorated quality of the rubber seal on the right rear light, can result in either a brake light suddenly going out or a damaged rear unit of the SAM information processing system.

The front SAM units installed in the space under the front passenger seats have an equally unimportant reputation. As soon as a small amount of moisture gets in there, the instrument lighting immediately begins to malfunction and all electronic devices located in the front part of the cabin may turn off. And new such SAM blocks cost around 400 euros.

Unlike the surface of the body, the outer handle of the driver's door is quite easily susceptible to corrosion. Poor contacts cause poor performance of the optional Keyless Go system. In most cases, after a few years, the door locks also have to be replaced because the springs in them break.

Due to software glitches, the electric lock on the trunk begins to malfunction, and after a few years the plastic structure may completely collapse. Around the same period, many begin to notice malfunctions in the tailgate servo drive, which are “treated” as a result of recalibration.

But the biggest problem should be expected in about eight years. It is then that the owner of a Mercedes ML may be surprised by the “behavior” of the ignition switch, which will not respond to the transponder key and, as a result, simply will not start the engine.

Motors in Mercedes ML

The most popular model is the M272 petrol “six”, which has a volume of 3.5 liters. It makes up a significant part of the entire automotive market. This machine is characterized as the most problematic. In vehicles that have not undergone restyling, the plastic swirl flaps are observed to jam, after which it is necessary to purchase a new intake manifold. But for newer cars (released after 2007) this defect has been corrected.

The car uses 2 batteries, costing 55 and 70 euros. They typically last about 5 years and provide power to all the electronics in the cabin. The Mercedes ML has a fairly reliable generator; it can easily operate for 250,000 km; the starter solenoid relay may break down after about 100,000 km. To change it you will need 45 euros.

However, the sore spot of this motor lies in the cermet gear of the balancer shaft drive. Its teeth sometimes wear out so much that a shift in valve timing occurs, and chips and crumbs adversely affect the functioning of the oil pump, the cost of which is approximately 170 euros.

When purchasing a used car, you should pay attention to the presence of “diesel” knocking, as well as to the proper operation of the engine. Do this Mercedes ML test it is necessary, otherwise you will have to fork out money for its repair, which involves the mandatory removal of the engine, this is approximately 2500 euros. At the same time, you can at the same time install a new valve timing adjustment clutch and a drive chain with stabilizers and tensioners, which will all stretch evenly over time.

The few owners of ML with a V8 engine of the M273 series should not relax too much. They will also face problems with gears. Its only advantage is that there is no need to remove the engine when replacing the balancer shaft.

The most reliable model is the “eight” M113. It can be compared to a tank, but such a “rarity” is very rare. Therefore, connoisseurs of reliability should consider, as an option, the diesel “six” OM642. While driving it, you can encounter a rather serious problem only when driving the pre-restyling version, which was released no later than 2007.

The interior surface of these cars is made of the wrong material. In addition, after about 150 thousand kilometers, the welds begin to crumble very quickly. Metal chips fall into the turbine, as a result of which it stops working.

Transmission

One thing is good: you don’t have to rack your brains with choosing the type of gearbox. After all, today there is no alternative to the 7-speed automatic Mercedes G-tronic 722.9. It was created in 2005 and even then had a large number of minor shortcomings. The ISM module experiences faults that prevent the selector from being switched. The main drawback is the weak Siemens ECM electronic control board. The latter is not able to withstand frying in a special oil box for a long period. In this regard, a temperature of 130 degrees is considered fatal for it.

The valve body, combined with the ECU into one system, is also not famous for its reliability, because over time the control solenoids become unusable. As a result, the clutch packs are damaged. Exactly the same consequences can occur due to improper operation of the oil pump, whose gears become deformed after crossing the 150,000 kilometer mark.

However, all of the problems described above often only apply to cars that were produced before 2007. In other models, only one drawback appears - in the places of rolling, the cooling tube of the “automatic” leaks. But the box itself has the ability to travel about two hundred thousand kilometers without supernatural effort.

The transfer case can last about the same amount of time. But occasionally another breakdown occurs after every hundred thousand kilometers. There may be a strong grinding noise that occurs under the influence of the load from a stretched chain, as well as beeps after accelerating if the planetary gear bearings are already worn out. As a rule, the cause of the hum is the driveshaft outboard bearing, which changes along with the driveshaft. Replacement of the gearbox is required if vibrations are felt in the front gearbox.

The shortcomings in the Mercedes ML don't end there. Many car owners complain about uncharacteristic sounds in the steering system. For specimens that are more than eight years old, it is better to immediately replace the power steering pumps, as well as the reservoir. Such measures are carried out for the purpose of prevention, because the filter mesh becomes clogged after a few years and quickly fails.

As for the steering rack, it breaks extremely rarely, but it can leak. This drawback can be corrected using an original set of seals with oil seals. The play in the steering shaft driveshafts should be checked after a noticeable knocking sound appears when turning the steering wheel.

Car suspension

In the suspension of a car that has traveled at least seventy thousand kilometers, the stabilizer strut usually breaks first. Then the steering rods begin to give out (after about 100,000 km), as well as the rear shock absorbers. In addition, you may have to spend the money necessary to replace the front shock absorbers and, at the same time, the lower control arms, whose silent blocks break along the inner ring.

The first generation Mercedes-Benz M-Class (W163 series) began production at a newly built plant in the US state of Alabama in 1997. To avoid confusion with BMW M models, the car modification indices were changed to ML.

The M-Class could rightfully be called an SUV - it had a monocoque frame and permanent all-wheel drive with a reduction gear. The model was very popular, so the capacity of the American plant was increased to 80 thousand cars per year, and in addition, the assembly of SUVs was organized in Austria, at the Magna Steyr plant.

Under the hood of the basic modification of the Mercedes-Benz ML 230 there was a four-cylinder engine with a capacity of 2.3 liters (150 hp). More powerful versions were equipped with V6 and V8 engines with a capacity of 218–292 hp. With. There were two turbodiesels - a five-cylinder 2.7 and an eight-cylinder with a volume of four liters.

At the top of the lineup was the “charged” Mercedes-Benz ML 55 AMG with a 5.4-liter V8 (347 hp), which allowed the car to accelerate to “hundreds” in 6.7 seconds. Transmissions are five-speed, manual or automatic, drive is only four-wheel drive.

Production of the first generation model ended in 2005; a total of 620 thousand cars were produced. It is noteworthy that it was on the basis of this car that the so-called “Popemobile” was created, which the Pope uses for ceremonial trips to this day.

2nd generation (W164), 2005–2011

The second generation M-Class, which appeared in 2005, became a completely different car. It became larger, received a monocoque body instead of a frame, lost versions with a manual transmission, and air suspension was added to the list of options. For those who like to get off the road, the Offroad-Pro package was offered with a reduction range in the transmission and locking center and rear differentials.

Four-cylinder engines were no longer offered for the car. The basic petrol Mercedes-Benz ML 350 was equipped with a V6 3.5 engine, the ML 500 modification had an eight-cylinder engine with a volume of 5.0 or 5.5 liters under the hood, and at the top of the model range was the “charged” Mercedes-Benz ML 63 AMG with a V8 6.2 engine (510 hp), capable of accelerating to 100 km/h in 5.0 seconds. There were two turbodiesels: a three-liter V6 (190–231 hp), and a four-liter V8 with 306 hp. With. All cars were equipped with seven-speed automatic transmissions.

In 2008, the model was slightly restyled, and in 2010, the Mercedes-Benz ML 450 Hybrid appeared with a 330-horsepower hybrid power plant, consisting of a V6 3.5 gasoline engine and two electric motors.

Production of second-generation vehicles at the Alabama plant continued until 2011.

We can conclude that this is a pretty bold SUV. The gearbox and frame are attributes that usually indicate serious off-road capabilities. But the luxury Mercedes ML had mediocre capabilities (despite the presence of a center differential). However, few owners decided to test the potential of an expensive car.

When preparing a successor, Mercedes decided to rely on comfortable driving and more advanced technical solutions. They abandoned the frame, added air suspension (optional), changed the range of diesel engines and almost the entire range of gasoline engines.

The gearbox has disappeared from the list of standard equipment. Does this mean the company has abandoned its off-road ambitions? Not really. Basic versions are actually less suitable for off-pavement trips. However, for those who wish, Mercedes has prepared a special package that allows them to increase efficiency off-road. The special set includes: full locking central and rear differentials, a gearbox and other air suspension settings (allowing for higher ground clearance).

But let's return to the body of the Mercedes ML. Here we can only express admiration. The space on the back seat is pleasantly surprising. There are no objections to the comfortable seats either.

Additional benefits are revealed when examining the trunk. The long compartment has smooth walls, and when folding the rear seat, a flat surface is obtained. Well, if the first buyer did not save on various packages, then you can count, for example, on a practical organizer of space in the trunk, making it easier to maintain order.

Unlike its predecessor, the Mercedes ML II does not have a third row of seats. Although it was not particularly spacious, it made it possible to expand the functionality of the car.

It is worth paying attention to the interior trim elements. Here, too, the generosity of the first buyer was of no small importance. Mercedes offered a very wide list of options: wood inserts, different colors, etc.

The range of engines was no less successful. Even the weakest 190-horsepower modification with a diesel engine accelerates to 100 km/h in just over 10 seconds. And it consumes on average about 11 liters of diesel fuel per 100 km. For dynamic driving in the city, 15-16 l/100 km will be required. The 3-liter diesel was offered in several power options, not very different from each other. The maximum figure was 231 hp. For lovers of dynamics, a 4-liter turbodiesel with 306 hp output is provided.

The range of petrol offers is not very wide, but there is a motor for everyone. The base 3.5-liter engine produces 272 hp, while the top-end AMG produces 510 hp. The latest modification has a redesigned chassis, thanks to which it behaves more confidently. The ML 63 AMG accelerates to the first hundred in 5.4 seconds, and after 18.8 seconds the speed indicator needle crosses the 200 km/h mark. Fuel consumption significantly exceeds 20 liters per 100 km.

All engines are mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission. During dynamic driving, speeds change quickly and without jerking, but it is quite obvious that the gearbox is designed more with a sedate driver in mind.

Behind the asphalt

So is it worth recommending the Mercedes ML to a person who plans to drive to the dirt? Yes, but provided that the car is equipped with an off-road package. It was offered as an option and could be combined with almost any engine (except AMG).

Such a car can be very efficient. It has capable technology and allows you to increase ground clearance to 305 mm, and the fording depth reaches 600 mm. However, it is worth remembering that off-road there is a high risk of damage to transmission elements, and repair costs will be very high.

It is worth noting that the Mercedes ML is not overly problematic. However, servicing a car of this class will not be cheap.

What will cause the most trouble?

Gasoline engines are a relatively safe choice. But this does not mean a complete absence of problems. For example, the Check light may come on, and the computer will show the incorrect position of the camshafts. This means that you will have to replace the timing chain, and the guides and tensioner, depending on the condition

The weak points of the 3-liter diesel engine are the dampers in the intake manifold and the electronic turbine controller, which, unfortunately, is integrated into the body (some services are ready to repair). After 200,000 km, problems with the injection system and timing chain stretching should be expected.

The most risky is the 4-liter diesel V8. Even the smallest problems can be expensive to fix. To dismantle the turbine (and there are two of them), you will have to dismantle the entire engine. The operation of removing and installing the motor will take about two days, which will greatly affect the cost of repairs. But the most unpleasant disease is the lowering of cylinder liners. You can try to restore the engine, but repairs will be expensive and the results will be questionable. In addition, the timing chain can stretch after 200,000 km.

Gearboxes often suffer when paired with more powerful engines (especially diesel V8s) - they cannot withstand high torque. In almost every machine, the control board fails. Replacement, fortunately, is not particularly expensive (via the lower part of the gearbox).

Additional problems are caused by the air springs of the air suspension - they can withstand about 100,000 km. The cost of the front strut assembly is about $400, the rear struts are about $300. Wheel bearings often require replacement.

Fortunately, the ML body is very well protected from corrosion. Electronics are not too annoying either.

Model history

The ML is the first SUV in Mercedes history. The Germans had extensive experience in creating SUVs (G-Class) and luxury cars. The combination of all-wheel drive and comfortable solutions turned out to be very successful.

Despite the great success of the first generation Mercedes ML, the second ML became a completely different car. The designers focused on comfort and handling. The interior of the SUV has become even more versatile and modern.

Modifications

  • ML 350 (3.5 / 272 hp) – 2005-2011
  • ML 500 (5.0 / 306 hp) – 2005-2007
  • ML 280 CDI (3.0 / 190 hp) – 2005-2008
  • ML 320 CDI (3.0 / 224 hp) – 2005-2008
  • ML 350 BlueTEC (3.0 / 211 hp) – 2009-2011
  • ML 420 CDI (4.0 / 306 hp) – 2006-2010
  • ML 63 AMG (6.2 / 510 hp) – 2008-2011

Design features

The second generation Mercedes ML received the designation W164. Compared to its predecessor, it has become much more technically modern: a self-supporting body, independent suspension on all wheels. Air suspension was offered as an option.

The all-wheel drive system uses a center differential. In AMG, the scheme is implemented a little differently. Cars with the off-road package have a gearbox and the ability to lock the center and rear differential 100 percent.

"Wild animal"

Specialists from the AMG campaign are developing sports versions for almost the entire Mercedes model range, without losing attention to SUVs and SUVs. In addition to the special trim style and the installation of a powerful 6.2-liter engine, changes were also made to the transmission. Instead of a differential dividing the traction between the axles in a 50:50 ratio, a differential appeared that sends the lion's share of the torque to the rear axle.

Spare parts prices

There are no problems with spare parts on the market. In addition, there are a large number of cheaper and no less high-quality substitutes.

Approximate cost of spare parts (ML 320 CDI):

  • Oil filter – $9;
  • Air filter – $20;
  • Front brake pads – $60;
  • Front brake discs – $120;
  • Exhaust gas temperature sensor for DPF filter – $120;
  • Front shock absorbers – $400;
  • Nozzle - $300;
  • Halogen headlight – $110;
  • Wing – $300.

Conclusion

Mercedes ML is a good all-round car. However, it is worth keeping in mind that maintaining a premium SUV is not a cheap pleasure. Fortunately, ML is not extremely problematic.

Mercedes-Benz ML 2005–2011

Mercedes-Benz ML 2005–2011

The second generation of Mercedes-Benz ML (W164) appeared at the beginning of 2005, replacing the model with index 163 on the assembly line. Instead of a frame structure, the car tried on a monocoque body; in the suspension, torsion bars gave way to a spring double-lever at the front and a four-lever at the rear, and the wheelbase increased from 2820 to 2915 mm. Moreover, the standard one is, in fact, a crossover. It has permanent all-wheel drive, and the 4-ETS (Four Electronic Traction Support) system, as on the previous M-class, brakes slipping wheels. However, the ML was offered with a Pro Off-Road package that included air suspension, a 2-speed transfer case, and locking center and rear differentials. With such an arsenal, he becomes a professional “rogue.”

The geography of the Mercedes-Benz ML is wide: there are both dealer cars and copies imported from America and Europe on the market. And any of the options can be safely considered as a purchase.

Engine

The Mercedes-Benz ML was initially equipped with a 3.5 liter petrol V6 (272 hp) and a 5 liter V8 (306 hp). Turbodiesels were represented by a 3.0-liter V6 (190 and 224 hp) and a 4-liter V8 (306 hp). After restyling, the petrol V8 increased in volume to 5.5 liters (388 hp).

The basic V6 3.5 l (M272) is the most widespread and the most problematic. A chronic sore is premature wear of the cermet gear (RUB 4,200) driving the balance shaft. Because of this, not only did the valve timing “go away,” but also chips got into the oil pump (RUB 7,500), rendering it inoperable. Repairs involve removing the engine and are expensive - from 70,000 rubles. At the same time, the service center will probably offer to replace the valve timing adjustment clutches (RUB 21,000) and the timing chain. Be sure to agree - they won’t live long either.

At the same time, at a mileage of 50–80 thousand km, the plastic swirl flaps of the intake manifold became stuck, which is why it was necessary to replace it entirely (RUB 29,000). Note that on post-restyling cars these shortcomings have already been eliminated.

But the old V8 of the E113 series, inherited from its predecessor, is simply unkillable. The same cannot be said about its 5.5-liter successor - every 50–90 thousand km you have to update the balance shaft, the replacement of which is no more expensive than that of the V6, since the engine is not dismantled for this.

The common rail diesel engine is generally reliable. Early cars suffered from exhaust manifold wear after 150 thousand km. Apparently, the material of this unit was selected incorrectly and the metal from its inner surface was “chipped”, and wear products, getting into the turbine, “killed” it. It’s a shame - after all, under normal conditions, the resource of the Garret turbocharger (from 128,000 rubles) is 350 thousand km. Glow plugs must be changed carefully - due to “sticking” of the threads, the block head can be damaged.

Transmission

Mercedes-Benz ML buyers won’t have to worry about choosing a gearbox - all cars come with a 7-speed automatic transmission. Troubles were often caused by the hydraulic unit, the control valve solenoids (4,500 rubles each) of which failed by 100 thousand km. The box began to twitch and stutter during acceleration. If the disease is started, the clutch pack will soon become infected. After 150 thousand, the oil pump usually gives up (RUB 15,000), the automatic selector refuses to switch, and the ECM electronic control unit does not withstand the heat test (RUB 30,000). But all these defects, except one - leaks in the cooling tubes of the "automatic" - were eliminated after restyling.

The Pro Off-Road drivetrain is built to last. The transfer case, like the automatic transmission, usually withstands 200 thousand km. Sometimes, before this period, the chain stretches (9,500 rubles) and the bearings begin to hum. However, the sound can also come from the outboard bearing, which dealers replace together with the driveshaft (40,000 rubles). In specialized technical centers, the bearing can be replaced separately for 6,500 rubles. After 150 thousand km, you have to change the front gearbox (43,000 rubles), the imminent death of which will be announced by hum and vibration.

Chassis and body

The spring suspension of the standard Mercedes-Benz ML is as strong as tank armor. The first to be sold in the front suspension at 60–90 thousand km are the stabilizer struts (1,500 rubles each). And only at 120–150 thousand km comes the turn of shock absorbers (10,800 rubles each) and lower arms (3,500 rubles each), which become unusable due to wear of their silent blocks. The rear suspension elements are even more reliable and last on average one and a half times longer. The only exceptions are shock absorbers (8,500 rubles each), which last an average of 100–130 thousand km.

In the steering system, after 100 thousand km, the rods are changed (2,300 rubles each). The rack lasts for 200 thousand km, but can begin to leak much earlier than this period - it is eliminated by installing oil seals and seals from the repair kit (from 1000 rubles). And if it starts knocking, first check the steering shaft driveshaft (RUB 8,000). But the power steering pumps (RUB 22,000) were often replaced under warranty at first. When replacing, it is advisable to also update the tank, the filter mesh of which quickly becomes clogged.

The Airmatic air suspension is more finicky and expensive. Pneumatic cylinders rarely withstand more than 120–140 thousand km, and they are not cheap: the front ones complete with shock absorbers cost 52,000 rubles each, and the rear ones cost 14,000 rubles each. To extend their life, it is advisable to wash the cylinders at every wash. And if the car starts to make extraneous knocking noises when driving over uneven surfaces, check the fastening of the front pneumatic elements to the struts - the fasteners weaken over time and require simple tightening.

The body is distinguished by its heroic resistance to corrosion, and the paintwork is durable. Even chrome parts do not lose their shine for many years. The main thing is that a car handcrafted after an accident is not sold to you under the guise of a worthy copy.

But electricians present unpleasant surprises with age: there are interruptions in the operation of the climate control, the heater motor torments with serenades, the air damper servos begin to live their own lives (8 pieces, 3,500 rubles each), the sound signal and buttons on the steering wheel glitch, swallows CDs -player... Moreover, treatment is by no means cheap.

Modification

Mercedes-Benz offers charged AMG versions for almost all of its models. And the M-Class is no exception. Moreover, it should be noted that from the point of view of safety margin and durability, these modifications are preferable to civilian ML. After all, more stringent quality control is applied in the manufacture of these machines. The engines are assembled by hand - each has the personal mark of the master, who gives the motor an almost lifetime guarantee. And the 7-speed automatic transmissions have been refined and refined to handle higher torque. Externally, the ML 63 AMG is distinguished by different bumpers and an aerodynamic body kit around the perimeter of the body. Under the hood is a petrol 6.2-liter V8 equipped with a compressor. The engine develops 510 hp. and 630 Nm, which allows the heavy SUV to accelerate to 100 km/h in just 5.0 s, and the top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h. By the way, the V8 does not suffer from a lack of appetite at all.

Restyling

In 2008, the Mercedes-Benz ML underwent restyling, which most noticeably affected its appearance. There have been no radical changes in the interior, except for the appearance of improved finishing materials. The updated car is most easily recognized by the headlights, the inner lower corners of which are now lowered, a modified front bumper into which foglights of a different shape are integrated, as well as an updated radiator grille. The rear features new LED lights. There are few technical innovations for Russian-spec cars. Thus, in the engine range, instead of a 5-liter V8 (M113), a power unit with the same number of cylinders of 5.5 liters and a power of 388 hp appeared. And the turbodiesel 4-liter V8 left the engine line after 2008.

Verdict

Sergey Fedorov, editor:

About a car like the Mercedes-Benz ML they usually say: it’s well tailored and tightly sewn. Even at an advanced age, it can boast of a respectable appearance, and on the high-speed highway it has exquisite driving performance and handling, and also captivates with excellent off-road capability. But for everything in this life you have to pay. And even though a used M L costs several times less than a new one, we do not recommend buying it with your last money. Since servicing it even on a specialized “gray” service would be hard to call affordable. It's a Mercedes! To minimize the upcoming costs of maintaining an SUV stuffed with electronics, we recommend choosing a diesel modification of the ML 320 CDI younger than 2008.
