Nissan Patrol GR Y61 (1998–2004)

When we were preparing a story about the Nissan Patrol for the previous issue, we were going to include a story about the latest generation of the model. Indeed, from a technical point of view, the Patrol GR with the factory index Y61 is not so different from its predecessor, and the prices in the secondary market for the Y61 of the first releases are almost equal to the prices for the relatively fresh Y60. But when the magazine article began to swell to the size of a brochure, it was decided to move the Y61 to the next issue. Here's the whole backstory...

The designers of Nissan set about creating a new generation of the flagship of the off-road line in the second half of the 90s of the last century. It was simply impossible not to do this: competitors were not dozing, and very disturbing rumors leaked from the headquarters of the Toyota concern. However, when creating a new car, Nissan decided that it was not worth instilling good road manners in the Patrol at the expense of eternal off-road values. Maybe they just foresaw that the majority of firms would follow the “asphalt” path? Indeed, at that time, sociological data claimed that most of the owners of expensive SUVs simply never leave the asphalt.

We will go the other way...

As a result, Nissan decided to go against the elements. The company hoped to attract those customers for whom the reliability of the car and its ability to overcome "directions" were no less important than driving comfort. Well, if so, then they don’t look for good from good, and the car with the Y61 index inherited the frame and the entire chassis of the previous model without major changes. What's more, the new flagship's off-road capability has even been enhanced by the use of a releasable rear stabilizer bar. By the way, a similar design, only with a manual drive, had already been tested on the Nissan Safari Y60 sold in the Japanese market by that time, and it really showed its effectiveness in terms of improving suspension articulation on rough terrain. True, the driver of the Y61 was relieved of the obligation to pull on the T-handle, similar to the handbrake of cars of the 50s, and remember to re-attach the stabilizer integrity when leaving the pavement. On the new model, to open the stabilizer, it was enough to press the button, and the reverse process did occur automatically, when the speed reached 30 km / h.

Another innovation was to serve to increase the rating of the Nissan Patrol as a universal car. I'm talking about the freewheels of the front wheels. The fact is that hubs with manual switching are very reliable, but inconvenient in everyday life, and it’s not worth it for the owner of an expensive car in a Brooks suit to get out of the cab and manually turn the switch flags. On the other hand, automatic clutches don't stand up to serious off-road use. To resolve this contradiction, Nissan designers have developed unique automatic hubs with the ability to force them to close.

As for the general proportions of the body, they remained the same, although the outlines of the car have changed in the most radical way. The interior design has also changed: it has become more comfortable and "richer", but the "polished" on previous models, the relative position of the seats and controls has been preserved.

Prices for Nissan Patrol Y61 in the secondary market (Moscow)
Year of issue Price dispersion, USD
1998 19 000–26 500
1999 23 800–29 000
2000 24 500–32 500
2001 31 000–33 500
2002 32 000–37 500
2003 37 500–45 000

But instead of a heart?

At first, the Nissan Patrol Y61 inherited the range of engines from its predecessor. For Europe, the RD28T turbodiesel with a volume of 2826 cm3 was mainly intended, and for other markets, the TB45E gasoline “six” with a volume of 4.5 liters and the TD42 diesel engine.

The official debut of the model took place at the Frankfurt Motor Show, and a presentation for journalists took place in the fall of 1997 in Barcelona. At the same time, its serial production began in two forms - a three-door short-wheelbase and a five-door long-wheelbase. These cars belonged to the 1998 model year, and therefore, in the subject literature, as a rule, it is indicated that the Nissan Patrol Y61 has been produced since 1998. Well, in the year of the new millennium, Patrol received a new power unit - a 4-cylinder ZD30 turbodiesel with a displacement of 2953 cm3, intercooling of the charged air, direct fuel injection controlled by the injection pump electronics, and a combustion chamber in the piston. This engine developed 158 hp. at 3600 rpm and produced 354 Nm of torque at 2000 rpm. In 2003, another change took place in the line of engines: instead of the 4.5-liter “six” TB42, the TB48 engine with a volume of 4759 cm3 and a power of 245 hp went to the conveyor. By the way, the only country in Europe where cars with this engine are delivered is Russia. In the bowels of Nissan headquarters, it has finally been decided that the policy of 100% dieselization in our incomprehensible country leads to loss of customers and losses. In addition to the new engine, Patrol also received a new five-speed automatic transmission with manual shifting.

Finally, in November 2004, the updated Nissan Patrol was presented to the public. Restyling touched the interior and most of the external panels, the car received new bumpers and optics, but remained quite recognizable. Seven years on the market is a long time, and the cars, called the "new Patrol", are starting to change their owners. So what threatens the purchase of such an SUV? Experts testify that there is nothing to be afraid of, although the Patrol Y61 still has some problems.

Black label

We will start, as always, with the engines. The merits and demerits of the RD28T, which was installed on cars from 1998-1999, are well known, and we described them in detail in the last issue of the magazine. In order to “repeat what has been passed”, we will only say that the cylinder head cracks and burns out, and the high-pressure fuel pump, as a rule, requires a bulkhead after 300 thousand kilometers. However, the Patrol Y61 with such mileage is not yet on the market, so buying a car with a “sick” injection pump is unlikely. For the same reasons, turbine problems are unlikely to occur. Well, replacing after buying a timing belt and rollers is a procedure recommended for all models and engines. In any case, this must be done after every 100 (and in our conditions - after every 90) thousand kilometers. Recall that the replacement work costs $ 90, the original belt - 1200 rubles in the store and $ 75 at the dealer. Rollers will cost 1,500 rubles original or 1,000 rubles non-original.

As for the ZD30 turbodiesel, the first enthusiasm about its power, elasticity and low noise subsided rather quickly. The company even had to conduct a recall campaign related to malfunctions in the cooling system and piston burnout. In general, when buying a car with such an engine, it is advisable to immediately check whether all the necessary manipulations have been done on this car to replace a potentially defective unit. The piston groups of the "old" and "new" types differ in appearance, but in order to see this, you need to disassemble the engine, you guessed it. Fortunately, all dealers have a database that allows you to check if the piston group has been replaced on a given machine. In addition, special marks were placed on cars that passed through the campaign. Most likely, these works have already been completed on the car that you have looked at, but there is still some possibility that the car was not serviced by an authorized dealer after import and did not pass the campaign. In this case, you will need 5850 rubles for a set of oil scraper rings and 2670 rubles for each piston.

Water in a solarium

Another standard ZD30 problem is related to the hydraulic poly-V-belt tensioner, which drives all attachments of this motor. According to statistics, it is this node that accounts for most of the warranty repairs. If the previous owner of the car was lucky and the tensioner did not cause him any trouble, which cannot be said about you (that is, problems gradually accumulated), then prepare 4,750 rubles for a new tensioner or 2,490 rubles if you can get by with replacing the damper, plus some amount for the work. However, the main cause of the diseases of this engine is water in diesel fuel. Of course, the amount of moisture that is formed from condensate in the tank is determined by the sensor and is not something fatal, but if one and a half to two liters of H2O gets into the tank, then this is a completely different story. The electronic components inside the pump are not protected in any way, since, in theory, they should work when completely immersed in diesel fuel. Water is like death to them! The nozzles of the ZD30 are non-separable and change only as a whole. They cost 11,950 rubles apiece, but glow plugs are inexpensive - 900 rubles each. Fortunately, this engine can be diagnosed by the Consult system by simply connecting a computer to the appropriate connector. Of course, not all parameters are read, but most of the most important indicators can be determined without disassembling the machine. This procedure is not too expensive, and it is unreasonable to neglect it when buying. There are no special problems with the body kit (generator, starter), everything is the same as for all models. The generator is located on the right side at the top and does not suffer too much from pollution. Sooner or later, the owner of a turbodiesel car will have to deal with a turbine failure. The "original" unit costs 32,970 rubles, and the "non-original" unit costs 27,000.

Fantastic reliability

There is practically no data on the statistics of breakdowns of TB45 and TB48 gasoline engines. In Russia, 4.5-liter engines are quite rare, since cars equipped with them were not officially delivered to us, and cars with a 4.8-liter engine are still too young.

As for other systems, primarily the chassis and transmission, then, as I said, they are almost the same as their predecessor, the Patrol Y60, famous for its fantastic reliability. Moreover, the front axle ("Achilles' heel" of so many SUVs) on the 61st model received more powerful constant velocity joints and became even more reliable. In the previous issue, we described in sufficient detail all the problems of the predecessor. Most likely, over time, these same diseases will become characteristic of Y61.

And hubs again

So far, only two specific "sores" of the model can be mentioned. First, the openable rear anti-roll bars become loose and begin to knock. The most curious thing is that this backlash practically does not affect the behavior of the car on the road. But if it comes to replacement, then you will have to pay 58,580 rubles. Secondly, hubs can fail. Most often, this happens solely through the fault of the owners, who are too lazy to switch them from Auto mode to Lock mode when going off-road. There is nothing surprising in this, because in this case, Patrol GR freewheels begin to behave in exactly the same way as any automatic clutches. A breakdown of the hub will lighten your wallet by 9450 rubles. By the way, cars imported from the Middle East often do not have freewheels at all, and instead of these devices there are ordinary flanges that ensure constant engagement of the front wheels with the axle shafts.

workhorse

New owners should take into account that the Patrol Y61 body repair is somewhat more expensive than in the case of its predecessor. So, the front fenders cost 10,500 rubles each, the rear ones - 24,360 each, the thresholds are supplied only with the doorway and cost 25,710. The lighting equipment is also more expensive: headlights cost 6,600 rubles, and taillights - 1,950 rubles.

Average prices for used Patrol Y61s have already dropped quite a bit compared to new car prices, but they are still far from the critical $10,000 milestone. So is it worth buying such a car? In my opinion, if you need a reliable “workhorse” for hunting trips, summer cottages and travel, while at the same time comfortable enough for daily use in the city, and you can afford to spend about 20 thousand dollars on a car, then the answer should be unconditionally positive. After all, criminal problems in relation to these machines are extremely rare, and serious financial investments after the purchase, as a rule, are not required. In any case, it is quite possible to find a 1998-2000 Patrol Y61 in excellent condition.

Just the perfect fit
Valentin SHMIGELSKY. Nissan Patrol (2001) 3.0L engine (diesel), automatic transmission, five-door body

With this purchase, I realized my long-cherished dream. From the moment the release of Nissan Patrol began, I just fell ill with them. I had a bunch of cars, but Patrol gives me the most pleasure. I haven't had any problems with him yet. Before that, the only diesel car I had was Mitsubishi Pajero, and I suffered with it, but Patrol did not disappoint even in these frosts. For a family, for a summer residence, for fishing - in a word, just a universal machine. The capacity is huge - you folded the seats, and take whatever you want to the dacha. Well, since we constantly go fishing and carry boats with us, Patrol is an ideal option for this. You drag a ton behind you, but the car doesn’t even feel it. I travel around Moscow quite a lot and often, and I don’t feel any problems with dimensions. They often say: “Oh, big car”, but in fact it is very easy to drive.

I have the emirates version
Dmitry LYSAKOV. Nissan Patrol (1998) 4.5L engine (gasoline), automatic transmission, five-door body

I have this car for exactly a year, I registered it last February. The car was born in Russia, in Moscow, so it rotted, and the body had to be welded and painted, especially since the car had never known anticorrosive. I had to do something mechanically. When I bought the car, there was a gas pump from a Zhiguli. Now from the Volga. The guides turned sour in the brakes, but it cost the purchase of rubber bands. The "automatic" works, of course, I changed the oil in it. Now I don’t really like how the hubs work, sometimes they tap, but they tell me that they can be sorted out. And so far, nothing has broken in a big way.

Pad replacement only
Roman KOVALEV. Nissan Patrol (2000) 3.0L engine (diesel), manual transmission, three-door

Current mileage is 76,000. I have been driving a Nissan Patrol for a long time, since 1993, and moved to the Y61 in 2000 and am not going to change the brand. In these machines, I am most attracted by the price-quality ratio and reliability. The car has been in Russia since birth, and so far it hasn’t broken anything major. In general, cars with a 2.8 engine have problems with the injection pump and with the block head, which can crack between the valves, and antifreeze begins to knock out of these cracks. The second "sore" is freewheels, which often fail due to improper operation. Everything else about these machines is reliable. The three-liter engine has problems with the intercooler and the turbine, which rarely takes care of more than 150 thousand.

I am not a racer
Vladimir POLYAKOV. Nissan Patrol (1997) 2.8L engine (diesel), manual transmission, three-door

The car was released at the end of 1997, that is, it is from the very first series. In Russia since 1999. The car had two owners: the first was a Belgian, the second was me. The mileage of the car is 220 thousand kilometers, of which I hit about 180 thousand. The car never let me down anywhere, and basically only consumables changed. There were no problems with the engine, although I know that many people have had problems with the cylinder head. But, firstly, I am not a racer, I try not to force the car, I drive a maximum of 120–130 on the highway and I think that this is quite enough. On moderate off-road - no problems, but where the tractor will not pass, why bother? On the track, the short-wheelbase still "goats" slightly, five-door cars go softer. In the city - no problems, except that the Patrol is generally harsh. He eats little, has enough maneuverability, parking, especially in winter, is not difficult - he drove into any snowdrift and parked it.

Cars are different. Some model can be safely called ordinary, the other is considered worthy. But there are cars that are considered legendary. Nissan Patrol is one of them. Initially created for the needs of the army, the Patrol U61 SUV won the hearts of off-road lovers around the world. Patrol is the official vehicle of the UN, it is used to travel to the most dangerous and difficult places.

Patrol U61 is the name of the fifth generation, which is no longer in production, in 2010 it was replaced by the sixth generation. But finding a car is not so difficult, and the price of a supported version is much lower than the sixth generation Patrol. The article will consider the features of all-wheel drive, power plants and operation in difficult conditions.

The main dimensions of the car
Length 5045 mm
Height 1855 mm
Width 1940 mm
Clearance (ground clearance) 220 mm
Wheelbase 2970 mm
rear track 1625 mm
front track 1605 mm
Luggage compartment volume from 183 to 2287 liters
Basic tires 275/65R17
Full mass from 2920 to 3200 kg, depending on the configuration

Appearance and interior

Photos will tell more about the appearance of the car. The body does not differ in brutal appearance, but at the same time it looks reliable and unshakable. And this is true - the body is made of a thick layer of metal, which is why the mass of the car reaches 3 tons. On the one hand, this makes it stable, and on the other hand, it negatively affects fuel economy.

Inside, everything is also simple and practical. There are no bells and whistles here, but the driver feels confident behind the wheel. And passengers usually do not complain. The only minus of the car interior (except for the decoration that is simple by modern standards) is the interior mirror.

Body Features

Nissan has tried to make the car as "indestructible" as possible. The body practically does not rust. After examining a car with ten years of experience, the experts found corrosion only in places of deep chips. But if the driver decides to buy a car from an off-road fan, then the body should be carefully examined, since the time spent in the swamps has a bad effect on the thresholds and wheel arches.

It is necessary to carefully examine the frame, especially its rear part, since corrosion appears first of all there. The body is made of a thick layer of metal, so the resource is quite large. But it will be great if, after the purchase, the owner will process the “weak” points of the design.

Specifications

It is worth talking about iron separately, but for now we suggest studying the engines. For all the time, many options have been released, but we are considering those engines that can be easily found in the CIS countries. It is worth saying that in the Russian market of used cars, the right-hand drive Patrol is a frequent guest.

And if possible, it is better to choose just such a version of the "Japanese". The right-hand drive SUV will have a Safari badge, which is appreciated among off-road enthusiasts. In general, such versions have a richer finish and content. The electronics settings are slightly different from the European versions of the Nissan Patrol. For example, in the root model you can find a 4.2-liter diesel unit that produces 160 horses.

Base diesel engine 2.8 TD

The 2.8-liter engine, like other fifth-generation Nissan diesel options, is turbocharged. The design includes six cylinders, which have an in-line arrangement. The power of the turbodiesel is 129 horsepower, bursting out from under the hood at 2000 rpm. Torque peaks at 252 H*m at 4000 rpm. The motor works only with 5-speed mechanics. The engine has the following dynamics and economy indicators:

  • The power plant accelerates Patrol from 0 km/h to 100 km/h in 18.4 seconds.
  • The speed limit is 155 km/h.
  • In the city, the base engine eats up about 15 liters, on the highway - 9.5. Mixed mode - 11 liters.

Diesel 3.0TD

The volume is 2953 cm3. The location here is also in-line, only there are already 4 cylinders, not 6. When choosing a medium diesel engine, it can be equipped with either a 4-speed automatic or a 5-speed manual. Power is 158 horses at 2000 rpm. The maximum torque is 380 H * m, which appears at 2000 rpm. The performance of a 3-liter diesel engine is as follows:

  • Acceleration from 0 km / h to 100 km / h takes 15.4 seconds with a manual or 16.9 with a gun.
  • Maximum speed - 160 km / h.
  • Consumption in the city is 14.3 liters with mechanics, the machine will reduce the figure to 13.9. On the highway, the car consumes 8.8 liters with a manual transmission or 8.6 with an automatic transmission. Mixed mode for both options requires about 10 liters.

Diesel flagship 3.0 TD

The top diesel has become the "favorite" of Russian offroaders.

The most expensive turbodiesel has an in-line arrangement of four cylinders. The choice of boxes is exactly the same as in the previous motor: 5MKP or 4AKP. The maximum power is 160 horsepower, which becomes available at 3600. Torque peaks at 380 H * m. The flagship received the following indicators:

  • Acceleration 0-100 km / h takes 15.2 seconds with a manual transmission or 16.3 with an automatic transmission.
  • The speed limit is 160 km/h.
  • Fuel consumption in the city should not exceed 14.3 liters with mechanics and 13.9 liters. with an automatic. On the highway, the car consumes 8.8 liters with manual transmission and 9 with automatic transmission. The average consumption is 12 liters.

4.8 petrol engine

The only gasoline engine has an in-line arrangement of six cylinders. Only a 5-speed automatic is available for it. Power is 245 horsepower at 3600 rpm. Peak torque is 400 N*m at 3600 rpm. The engine "feeds" on the 95th gasoline. The most powerful option boasts the following indicators:

  • Acceleration time to hundreds lasts 11.7 s.
  • The speed limit is 180 km/h.
  • In the city, a car equipped with a gasoline engine needs 19.6 liters per hundred. On the highway, fuel consumption drops only per liter - 18.1.

Nissan Patrol features - testers notes

Now we know what can be inside the SUV. The final puzzle is the car's ability on the road. Feedback from ordinary motorists and serious testers helps to see the big picture. If the SUV “rolls” on asphalt, then only rear-wheel drive is involved in the work. And this is convenient, because fuel consumption drops, the ride becomes more comfortable, and driving a rear-wheel drive car is much easier. But if the driver gets off-road, then in his arsenal appear: a rear differential lock, low gears and all-wheel drive.

Once in an extreme situation, the owner of the car can even turn off the rear stabilizer. This element looks like a shock absorber. In normal mode, the rear stabilizer is locked. In this position, the wheels are hung out earlier, as a result, there is less roll. But on a real offroad, the element becomes redundant, so the driver can disable it with a single button on the dashboard. After that, the electromagnet will release the stem. As a result, each Nissan Patrol wheel will receive 70 millimeters of free play. The symbiosis of these functions and a reliable body provide excellent cross-country ability to the car.

Returning to the stabilizer, it is worth warning that it should be turned off only in serious situations, since the wear of the part occurs quite quickly. Replacement will cost almost a thousand dollars. The rest of the parts that form the four-wheel drive are of high strength. True, the hub couplings of the front wheelset may be an exception. Here the situation is the same as with the stabilizer - they work in automatic and manual mode. So that the couplings do not cause trouble, they need to be monitored and serviced in time. This implies disassembly and lubrication of the hubs and steering knuckles. These procedures are performed every 40-60 thousand kilometers. In general, the car has no problems with off-road: an excellent all-wheel drive system, a strong body and a powerful power plant.

Patrol can be called unique because of the suspension, which is dependent on both front and rear. But this highlight has a positive effect on the reliability of the “running” both on a flat surface and offroad. The car turned out to be quite economical when compared with other SUVs. For example, bushings and stabilizer struts change only after 50-60 thousand km. With the steering of the car, too, everything is fine - with increasing speed, the effort on the "steering wheel" also increases. As the experience of Russian owners of Nissan Patron shows, steering parts are no less durable than the body.

Eventually

The brakes may seem a little too hard for some, but for an SUV, this is a plus, not a minus. With frequent use of the car on the road, replacement of the pads may be needed after 20 thousand mileage. If only the disc is worn out, you can grind it yourself and return it to operation.

You can buy a car for 1.5-2 million rubles, depending on the configuration and power stop.

Nissan Patrol Y61– Honorary member of the UN updated: August 22, 2015 by: dimajp

The history of the well-known brand of the popular Nissan Patrol SUV begins in the mid-50s, the first Japanese jeep with this name was introduced to the world back in September 1951.

For the entire period of production, a concern from Japan created six generations of cars of this brand, and Nissan Patrol 5 has truly become a bestseller in the SUV class.

A bit of history

Each car model produced in its original body is assigned an index, the fifth generation of a full-size SUV received the abbreviation Y61.

For the first time this model appeared in public at the very end of 1997, it was presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Although the car in this body began to be produced a long time ago, it was sold for the market of some Asian countries for a long time, the Nissan Patrol Y61 was produced until 2013 in parallel with the car of the last, sixth generation.

Its characteristic features are a dependent suspension, a frame body structure and a transfer case with a demultiplier; a car with such design features is no longer common in our time.

Initially, the assembly of the model was carried out in Japan, but in 2000 it was discontinued.

In 1998, the production of the car was launched in Spain, and in 1999 in the Philippines, then Nissan Patrol began to be produced in South Africa and Pakistan.

In 2004, the "off-road conqueror" was restyled, according to tradition, the changes primarily affected the exterior, and the car was modernized:

  • both bumpers;
  • rear lights;
  • head optics;
  • radiator grille.

There have also been some changes in the lineup of power units, the Japanese all-terrain vehicle received a new 4.8-liter gasoline engine.

The main production of the Nissan Patrol 5 was discontinued in 2010, and cars were imported to Russia from the United Arab Emirates, assembly was carried out until the end of 2012.

Appearance and body types

The bodies of all Patrol cars of early releases had angular rectangular shapes, and only in the form of the 5th generation car did some rounding appear.

But the SUV, originally intended for the Armed Forces, still retained an army bearing early on, and from its stern appearance one can guess that it is not afraid of swamp slurry and snow-covered country roads.

The impressive dimensions of the Japanese "rogue" also deserve respect, its length in the 5-door version is 5080 mm. There are no large overhangs on the body of the car, so the all-terrain vehicle can easily overcome very steep descents and ascents, ford water obstacles up to 0.7 m deep.

Wide plastic moldings are installed along the bottoms of the doors, and the wheel arches are protected from dirt flying from the road with plastic decorative overlays.

Also, the automobile company Nissan produced the Patrol with a short base in a 3-door version, the length of the short-wheelbase car was 4395 mm.

There are several different types of Y61 bodies, these are:

  • Van (cargo-passenger version);
  • four- and two-door Pickup;
  • Station Wagon (wagon type body);
  • Hardtop (car with a removable hard top).

The solidity in the appearance of the car is combined with the reliability of the model, even if the design of the SUV is not refined, but this “tank” will not let you down on the road.

Nissan Patrol equipment

For Russia, the Arab-assembled Patrol Y61 comes in two basic trim levels: Elegance and Luxury, with a manual or automatic transmission, a 3.0 diesel engine or a 4.5-liter gasoline engine (4.8 liters after restyling).

In all variants, only all-wheel drive is provided; Luxury equipment includes:

  • central locking;
  • braking assistance system;
  • power windows,
  • fog lights integrated into the front bumper;
  • electric mirrors.
  • air conditioning in the cabin;
  • CD changer;
  • power front seats.

A design feature of the Nissan Patrol is a rear stabilizer bar that can be switched off to improve the vehicle's off-road performance.

In the Elegance configuration, the car looks more solid, in addition to those listed, it has additional options:

  • electric sunroof;
  • leather seats and steering wheel;
  • electric driver's seat;
  • xenon;
  • salon inserts under a tree;
  • Cruise control;
  • subwoofer.

In all variants, four airbags are installed on the Patrol Y61: front passenger and driver, two side airbags.

Nissan Patrol engines

Although only three types of engines are presented for the Russian market, there are six types of internal combustion engines in the Patrol-5 model range:

  • gasoline 6-cylinder - 4.5 and 4.8 liters (TB45E and TB48DE);
  • diesel 6-cylinder - 2.8 (RD28ET) and 4.2 l (two models - TD422 and TD42T3);
  • diesel 4-cylinder - 3.0 l (ZD30D).

The petrol 4.5-liter power unit has a capacity of 200 horsepower with a maximum torque of 348 Nm.

This six-cylinder internal combustion engine is in-line, with distributed fuel injection, 12-valve.

The engine is designed to work with 95th gasoline, but can also "digest" AI-92.

The engine itself is very reliable, but it has a significant drawback - high fuel consumption. The actual fuel consumption on the highway is 16-18 liters, in the city - up to 25 l / 100 km.

Motor TB48DE - 245-horsepower, six-cylinder, in-line, with a torque of 400 Nm. Up to a hundred kilometers per hour, the internal combustion engine allows the car to accelerate in 10.8 seconds, to drive at a maximum speed of up to 190 km / h.

In terms of reliability, there are also no complaints about this power unit, but the consumption of gasoline with it is even greater: on the highway - 14.3 liters, in the city - 25 l / 100 km (real consumption reaches 30 liters).

The ZD30D 3.0 liter turbocharged diesel engine with direct fuel injection has good traction characteristics, allows you to accelerate the car to 160 km / h, dial a “hundred” in 16.3 seconds.

Motor power - 160 liters. s., maximum torque at 2000 rpm - 354 Nm. But with the characteristics of the internal combustion engine decent enough for a diesel engine, it does not differ in high reliability; first of all, the cylinder head fails.

The main cause of the breakdown is engine overheating, which occurs as a result of coolant leakage, and this is a characteristic disease of the Nissan Patrol 3.0 liter.

Transmission

The 5th generation Japanese SUV Patrol (1997-2010) is equipped with four types of gearboxes:

  • 4 and 5-speed automatic transmission;
  • Manual transmission-5 in two versions - FS5R30A and FS5R50B.

A mechanical transmission is paired only with a 3.0 TD turbodiesel, and a 4-speed diesel engine is also installed. automatic box.

A five-speed automatic transmission is available in the Elegance configuration with a 4.8-liter gasoline engine.

Nissan gearboxes on these cars rarely break down, most often Nissan Patrol repair is necessary if the car has been used for a long time in severe off-road conditions.

On the "mechanics" from frequent slipping, the clutch disc linings wear out, and the car owners themselves are mainly to blame for the malfunctions that occur in the transmission.

For bad roads and passing various obstacles, it is better to choose a car with a manual transmission, such a car is more adapted to harsh road conditions.

Nissan Patrol axles are one-piece, rear-wheel drive is permanent, the front axle is forcibly connected. Moreover, you can connect it only at low speed - the center differential is not provided here.

Hubs are installed on the front wheels, which are automatic, semi-automatic and mechanical.

The latter type of hubs is very reliable, but in order to connect the front axle, the driver with this design has to get out of the car every time.

On the restyled version, mechanical hubs were no longer installed, and the need to manually change transmission modes disappeared.

Chassis

Both suspensions on an SUV are dependent, the design is very simple, and there is practically nothing to break here. The most vulnerable point is the rear retractable stabilizer struts of the switchable stabilizer.

The brakes on both axles are disc, and the brake discs are all ventilated.

On early versions of the Nissan Patrol car, the suspension was spring, in the Y61 version, springs were already installed.

But such a design decision made the car move a little softer: when driving on rough roads, passengers in the car shake thoroughly, and it is difficult to somehow deal with this.

Body

The iron on the body of the SUV is not thin, you can’t push it with your finger. But the appearance of rust on the paintwork is not a rare phenomenon, especially often corrosion occurs under the moldings of the side doors, on the wheel arches, on the lower edge of the tailgate.

Nissan Patrol Y61 appeared on the market in 1997, and in 2014, Nissan introduced a new generation of the model. However, the company continued to release the previous generation SUV for some markets, including the Australian one. Since 1997, about 104,000 Patrol Y61s have been sold in Australia. It was decided to mark the retirement with the release of a limited batch of Patrol Y61 Legend Edition, consisting of 300 pieces.

The special version is priced at 60,000 Australian dollars (approximately 2,836,500 rubles), which is 10,000 more than the regular Patrol Y61. The all-wheel drive SUV is available with a three-liter four-cylinder diesel engine with 160 hp. Customers can order both manual and quad automatic versions.

Additional equipment, which received a limited version of the SUV, is represented by a reinforced bumper with a "kenguryatnik" and an integrated electric winch, an expeditionary roof rack, a snorkel, a towbar, a cover for a "spare tire" with the inscription "Legend Edition", ventilated disc brakes, 17-inch wheels with tires dimension 275/65. Also, the SUV was equipped with a rear-view camera and multimedia with navigation.

"The Nissan Patrol has proven its reliability and versatility in Australia's harsh environments. In 1967, the Simpson Desert was crossed for the first time in this model," comments Richard Emery, executive director of Nissan Australia. "The Nissan Patrol Y61 Legend Edition is a tribute to the model, and The additional options that the SUV is equipped with fully reveal its spirit and passion for adventure.I think that the 50th anniversary of Nissan's presence in Australia is the perfect occasion to pass the baton from the Y61 to the next generation of the model." Note that Patrol in a new body is sold in parallel with the Patrol Y61.

Recall that the Australian division of Nissan already presented in 2014, but it was called the Titanium Edition, and, among other things, it was equipped with spotlights on the "kenguryatnik", and an annual subscription to Pat Callinan's magazine served as a purchase bonus.

In Russia, Nissan Patrol is sold exclusively in the back of the Y62. The price of a new SUV with a 405-horsepower V8, "automatic" and all-wheel drive, excluding shares, is 4,550,000 rubles. Previously it was reported that .

At the end of 1997, you need to understand that in fact, this is not a completely new model, but another evolutionary round. Simply, two decades later, the body of the Patrol Y60 is so outdated (because, with the exception of some details, it migrated from the W160 / 260, originally from the time of the 80 Olympics), that it was impossible to live like this. Creativity, meanwhile, in the brain of Nissan has almost dried up, finances sang funeral romances, and the Japanese geisha had no choice but to lie on both shoulder blades under the French sponsor. Since then, since 1999, the Nissan brand has ceased to have at least something in common with the concept of "Japanese quality" and "indestructible cars". The only mammoth that was an eyesore for all subsequent years was Patrol, developed and put on the conveyor back in the pre-French era, an extremely unprofitable car for the plant ...

Throughout the 2000s, Patrol was fiercely hated by both the Japanese at the head plant of Nissan and in the Russian representative office. He did not fit into the "disposable" concept of Carlos Ghosn, the car is completely unprofitable due to excessive reliability. To my questions and exhortations that you would finally bring the Y61 with the legendary TD42 and sell it in wagons, and to the stories about the fragility of the ZD30, the PR people lazily yawned and waved their hands, saying that Qashqai, Almera and X-Trail are our everything, and Patrol - no one needs it, and the patrol turbodiesel is beautiful and very reliable. A conversation between the blind and the deaf. Thus, when we received the new formation Y62 Patrol in 2011, it was completely natural. The good old horse spoiled the furrow very much.

And so, we found out that for many components and assemblies Y61 is a twin brother with Y60, so it is also true for the next one. The same suspension is generally completely interchangeable. Common at first were motors. Until 1999, only a six-cylinder in-line turbodiesel RD28T was installed on the Y61 for Europe, which received some electronics, including an electronic accelerator pedal, and stopped moving. The car gained weight, and electricity became an invisible buffer between the driver and the engine. As a result, the old diesel engine was replaced by a new, four-cylinder (!) ZD30DDTI. Initially, the very idea of putting a 4-cylinder engine on a large frame SUV looked like a utopia, and it turned out to be a utopia.

In the description of the injection system, I may not be accurate in the wording, but the meaning is approximately as follows: the engine was equipped with a primitive likeness of Common Rail injection with the sonorous name M-Fire. What do you call the yacht... the fourth cylinder burned out at first even before the end of the warranty period (hello, France!). The plant realized that they had slightly gone too far with the weakening of the structure, carried out an easy upgrade, and he began to nurse a little more than 100 thousand km. However, the resource is very dependent on the "rider". In "sportsmen" the engine usually dies quickly, while in "normal" it takes care of both 200 and 250 thousand km. But even these figures look very pale against the background of the resource of the old power units that were installed on the Y60. At the same time, the characteristics of the engine are very meager - a miserable 158 "horses" available only at high speeds, in the turbo zone, and a "fantastic" torque of 363 N / m, which is also available far from the "bottoms". As a result, on cars with manual transmission, the "lower classes" are frankly not enough, and even with automatic transmission it is somehow not rich.

And in order to remove this breathtaking power, it was necessary to install an intercooler, which sometimes leaks and costs like a warhead, so the craftsmen began to adapt this device from a turbodiesel Pajero. The turbines die, and all sorts of sensors there, the motor is rich in floating glitches, very sensitive to fuel quality, today it drives well, but tomorrow it doesn’t drive at all ... On my Y61, by 150 thousand kilometers, there are already the third (!) Motor, with the latter was changed by the dealer in the eighth year of the car's life. Why? He covered himself right at the dealer in the technical center during MOT. How so? This is the charm of ZD30DDTI - it dies, most often, without warning. At one of my acquaintances, he simply exploded on the go ...
The problem of a low resource largely lies in an unfavorable thermal regime, because it is not in vain that it is the 3rd and 4th cylinders that burn out. The bulkhead budget lies in the range of 120-170 thousand rubles (work + parts).
The resource, I emphasize once again, primarily depends on the driver. A heart attack can happen both at 80 thousand km and at 350-450 thousand km, such centenarians are also known.
The main recipe for ZD30 longevity is not to over-twist, not overheat, keep radiators clean, sometimes change antifreeze, change oils and filters on time, refuel with a good diesel engine, and do not drive in forced modes (long runs on highways at high speeds or towing heavy trailers) .
And this motor tortured the whistle of the drive belt. It is the same for the entire engine, it really does not like when water and dirt get on it, but they always get on it. If the whistle has become constant and daily, then it's time to change the belt, and not because it is worn out, but because the grains of sand "melted" into the composition of the rubber itself and it simply became slippery. Most often, when measuring the belt, it is necessary to change the not very reliable tensioner.

Boxes, both manual transmission and automatic transmission, are very tenacious, although I had just a rare copy, the previous owner of which managed to finish the "automatic" for 120 thousand runs. But this is a unique case. Otherwise, on bridges, cardans, suspension - everything is insanely condo and reliable.
From time to time I hear criticism of patrol bridges for their non-removable swivel balls, that, they say, if they died, it is necessary to change the entire stocking assembly. They never died and never changed ... But the gearboxes are ready to live in the most monstrous conditions and work on water, this is a fact. And even the bridge flowing like a piglet will take you home from anywhere - the construction is very strong.

In an attempt to save money, the French changed the grade and thickness of steel used in the manufacture of frames. It didn’t become less durable because of this, and it didn’t start to rot faster for sure, however, for the “racers”, the upper, supporting cups of the rear springs are torn off the frame at a time ... it’s better to strengthen it right away.

As a result, having played enough with diesels, I switched to gasoline Patrols. The TB48 engine is made exclusively for the Arabs, but our representative office decided to make the Russians happy with this fiery heart. Ride on it once during the presentation in 2005, I realized - mine! The car, especially on regular wheels, flies very quickly. The dynamics are monstrous for a bridge mastodon, and a five-speed automatic transmission with a type-tronic is much more perfect than a four-speed one and diesels. Petrol Patrol with TB48, in my opinion, is the pinnacle of the evolution of the Y60 and Y61 series. But the appetite ... 30 liters per hundred - be so kind.

The minimum fuel consumption I registered on a highway in Finland, on good bourgeois gasoline, is 16.8, but as soon as you enter Russia, when driving calmly along the Moscow-St. Petersburg highway, the figure immediately jumps to 24 liters. And if you don't be modest and "trample" the accelerator, then all 26-27 ... This is on the highway! A tank of 95 liters is enough for 300 km ...

Why such an expense? Arab! The automatic transmission is set up in such a way that it keeps the speed in the working zone all the time, at least 2000 rpm, and if you start from a traffic light with enthusiasm, then the arrow often travels beyond the 4000 mark ... This is on an almost five-liter engine! Here's your cost...

I ended up driving on gas. Gas consumption - about 35 liters per hundred, a cylinder right in the cabin for 140 liters. Wonderful. But there is a case when a similar motor "burned out" from gas - either the piston group or the valves burned out. So I would not recommend gas for this engine.

To the question of the safety of installing a gas cylinder in the cabin, I will say this. It was on this handsome gasoline that I rolled over at a speed of 120 km / h in the Volgograd region. The balloon, filled to capacity, did not even budge. So if you put it correctly and in the right installation center, then there are no complaints about security.

By the way, after such a crash test, the crew remained alive and even almost healthy. The driver's concussion and cervical spine injury are easy payback for landing from an embankment onto a roof at that speed. Naturally, everyone was fastened. After this accident, the car remained on the move, vanishingly few whole body parts remained, the frame survived, and we restored the car, as a token of gratitude for the saved lives. How? This is a topic for a separate post...

How can you roll over on a straight stretch in the middle of the steppe? Easily! Do not forget, the Y61 is devoid of any stabilization systems, and is very demanding on the driver's qualifications. Especially if it is a powerful, gasoline version. The car is tall, the suspensions are long-stroke, the bridges weigh 150 kilograms each, the unsprung masses are monstrous, and only a person who has pretty much ridden on such a technique can feel the fifth point of such a hearse. If you have just moved from a passenger car ... it is very difficult to feel the beginning of a skid, and if the moment is missed, then it is almost impossible to catch the “pendulum” on a three-ton semi-truck.
Also, it is worth noting that the petrol Patrol has more powerful brakes and a softer standard suspension. In stock, it has a softer tread than a diesel. I put the hardest version of Tough Dog Ralph and the car on this suspension swallowed any holes, jumped over jumps, and was generally close to ideal. But there was also the other side of the coin - due to the increased speeds (such indicators are generally not available for a kerosene stove, because the maximum speed of the "lighter" is 190 km / h), the hubs became consumables and on Voloka 2011 I changed them twice for 7000 km! But, I emphasize, I "bludgeoned" with all the money ... I even had to borrow, as I remember now :)

By the way, a few words about patency. If you "roll into the Patrol", he rides off-road wonderfully. It has nothing to tear off and bend, no components and assemblies require, in my opinion, any protection or modifications, sit down and go, this is not the LR Defender for you. But there is one "but": in the standard configuration, this is not an LR Defender for you, Patrol is long, low and heavy, and does not go anywhere. To conquer space, you need at least 33 wheels, and real cross-country ability starts at 35 inches. But the whole power kit only spoils the off-road qualities, and if you remove all these armor (or better not put it on), then the difference is very noticeable. Thus, I insist on not using power body kits on the Y60 / Y61, only with maximum lightening this car will give you its innate excellent cross-country ability and reliability, otherwise, it will sink and crumble everywhere ... So choose, you show off or ride?

What to do if there is no desire to take a 3.0 diesel, and the gluttonous 4.8 scares you with extravagance? There remains the good old TD42, which has not gone anywhere, just thanks to our Nissan dealership, this modification went to the Arab countries and Africa.
Nowadays, gray dealers bring brand new Y61s from the UAE with TD42s on the "mechanics". As I understand it, all the cars are "from the storerooms", produced in 2011, although I still don’t have reliable data on whether the Japanese have removed the Y61 from production, different sources say different data. In general, it is still possible to buy a real idiot's dream, for only 1.8 - 2.2 million rubles, and if I could afford to buy a new car for this money, I would not even hesitate ...

Thanks to my colleague and good friend Alexander Evdokimov, who knows how to use search engines much better than I do, the following very useful information was obtained, further quote:

"Wikipedia will assure that the Y61 Patrol is still being produced in such urban settlements as: Karachi (Pakistan), Rosslyn (South Africa) and Tangier (Morocco). It's useful to look for those who sell these cars, and even found a few. So the smoking room is alive !!

In general, Patrol Y61 is alive and well, standing on the assembly line and not blowing in the mustache. But we are not supposed to…”

P.S. There is an option to replace the ZD30DDTI with a "contract" TD42, and even with a turbocharged TD42T, but only a few decide on this desperate step ...
P.P.S Very soon, expect posts about the restoration of the Y61 TB48 after the "ears", as well as the Concentrate of Thoughts on the Patrol Y62
P.P.P.S. I'm waiting for additions, clarifications and stories about personal experience in the comments! The Concentrate of Thoughts should really be a concentrate of experience on such a well-deserved car!
