Gas fire extinguishing. Extinguishing gases used Why freon 125 is so expensive

The FlameStop group of companies is the first and only production facility in Russia that manufactures and supplies all elements and components of equipment for gas fire extinguishing. All equipment is certified and produced entirely on the territory of the Russian Federation from Russian raw materials, which allows us to set the best prices that do not depend on the dollar and euro exchange rates.

Automatic gas fire extinguishing systems with GOTV freon

freon- light gas without color and smell. The most common gases currently used in gas fire extinguishing systems are freons 125 and 227ea.

Peculiarities:

  • Does not conduct electricity;
  • Does not cause corrosion;
  • Do not harm property, material values of the premises;
  • Extinguishes smoldering materials;
  • It can be used for extinguishing the total volume of premises and spot extinguishing equipment located in a common room;
  • Freons have a relatively low storage pressure, making them easy to transport and store;
  • It is used to extinguish class A, B, C, E fires;
  • Cold-water-toxic, chemically inert; when heated and in contact with burning surfaces, they do not decompose into toxic and aggressive fractions;
  • After the extinguishing is completed, they are easily removed from the room by simple ventilation.

Advantages:

  1. Does not harm electrical equipment
  2. Effectively suppresses fire with a minimum concentration of gas in the air.
  3. Economy in use.
  4. It instantly turns into a gaseous state, even at negative ambient temperatures, which allows you to reach the required concentration in a matter of seconds.
  5. Economical price from 3 to 1.5 times cheaper than analogues.
  6. Made in Russia
  7. It has a high fire extinguishing rate.

Gas extinguishing agent Chladon 125HP

Gas extinguishing composition Chladon 125HP is a chemical flame retardant. The mechanism of fire extinguishing with freons consists mainly in the effect of this gas fire extinguishing agent on breaking the radical bonds of the physicochemical chain reaction of combustion, in suppressing the "active centers" of this reaction and creating a non-combustible environment in the protected volume.

The gas fire extinguishing composition Freon 125HP is environmentally friendly and does not affect the ozone layer, interior items, electrical equipment and material assets. Filling factor 0.9kg/l.

In addition, Freon 125HP has maximum thermal stability compared to other freons, the thermal decomposition temperature of its molecules is more than 900°C. The high thermal stability of Freon-125KhP allows it to be used to extinguish fires of smoldering materials, since at the smoldering temperature (usually about 450°C), thermal decomposition practically does not occur.

Freon 125HP (Pentafluoroethane, C2F5H, Halon 25, FE-25, R125, HFC-125) can be used to extinguish:

Electrical equipment fires;

Fires of flammable liquids and gases (rooms for equipment and pump rooms);

Fires in rooms where expensive devices and equipment are concentrated (CED, operating rooms, etc.);

Fires in the premises of storage facilities.

Gas extinguishing agent Chladon 227EA

HFC-227ea is a fire extinguishing agent from the freon class. It is most widely used in world practice to protect objects where the safety of material assets is of paramount importance. HFC-227ea is a colorless, tasteless and odorless gas. It is registered in NFPA 2001 and ISO 14520 as HFC-227ea and is available under the brand names FM 200, Solkaflam 227, Novalon, and others. Chemically, HFC-227ea is heptafluoropropane and has the chemical formula CF3CHFCF3.

In the cylinder, HFC-227ea is in a liquefied state. When leaving the cylinder, HFC-227ea evaporates, reducing the ambient temperature, as for all freon class fumes, temperature reduction is one of the fire-extinguishing factors for HFC-227ea. Another factor is the chemical inhibition of the combustion reaction.

The undoubted advantage of HFC-227ea is its chemical inertness. It does not conduct electricity, does not cause corrosion of metals and destruction of organic compounds, which makes it possible to refer it to the group of so-called "pure gases".

HFC-227ea has regulatory fire extinguishing concentrations of about 7.5%, which is below its NOAEL of 9%. And this means that when used as a fire extinguishing agent, it is safe for humans. HFC-227ea is 1.4 times heavier than water, so the maximum fill factor for it is 1.15 kg/l, which allows to minimize the number of cylinders in the fire extinguishing system using it.

Physico-chemical data of HFC-227ea:

  • Molecular weight 170 a.u.
  • Boiling point at a pressure of 1 bar - 16.4 ° C
  • The density of the liquid at a temperature of 25 ° C - 1407 kg / m3
  • Gas density at a pressure of 1 bar and a temperature of 20 ° C - 7.28 kgm3
  • Saturated vapor pressure at 25 °C - 3.91 bar
  • Fire-extinguishing concentration for class B fire 7.2 vol.%
  • NOAEL- 9 /%.

NOAEL - No Observed Adverse Effect Level - the highest concentration of GOTV at which there is no harmful psychological or toxicological effect on humans.

  • HFC-227ea has an ozone depletion potential of zero, a global warming potential of 3500.

Application:

  • Suitable for areas where personnel work
  • Release time: 10 seconds
  • After a fire, you do not need to clean up the remains of the product
  • Widely used as a substitute for Halon 1301
  • Zero chance of ozone destruction
  • Suitable for storage in welded pressurized cylinders, saving space and money
  • Does not conduct electricity
  • Conforms to ISO 14520 and NFPA 2001 standards

Gas extinguishing modules

The modules are designed for long-term storage and emergency release of a gas fire-extinguishing agent (GOTV) into a protected room when extinguishing a fire using a volumetric or local volumetric method. They are used as part of automatic gas fire extinguishing installations of a modular or centralized type. They are used to extinguish fires of class A, B, C and electrical equipment under voltage. Placed in the protected premises or outside the protected premises, in close proximity to them. The number of modules in a group is from 2 to 12.

An example of a complete set of an automatic gas fire extinguishing installation

FlameStop Group provides full cycle services for equipping facilities with gas fire extinguishing systems. Our team consists of highly qualified professionals who have many years of experience in the production and supply of fire extinguishing equipment. Our employees will assist you in the design of fire extinguishing systems, calculate the necessary equipment and transfer the order to the warehouse or production. The logistics department organizes prompt delivery of equipment to any point in Russia and the CIS countries. Installation and service service will carry out installation of any complexity in the shortest possible time.

All gas fire extinguishing systems have a similar design. Usually AUGP consist of:

  • modules, i.e. cylinders filled with fire extinguishing agent;
  • control nodes;
  • pipelines;
  • nozzles for the release of gas and its distribution over the volume of the protected premises;
  • receiving control device.

Detectors - devices that respond to a fire and are responsible for warning about a fire, are also combined with the GP complex. Thus, the entire system is fully automated, functional, efficient and highly effective in fighting fire.

Where is gas fire extinguishing used?

If the first installations for extinguishing fires with gas were used mainly to protect ships, then modern AUGPs can be found at very many objects.

At the same time, it is GOTV - gas fire extinguishing agent that acquires the main importance. It will depend on the properties and characteristics of the gas whether it is possible or not to use AUGP at this particular facility.

Freon 125 is one of the most common gases used in AUGP today.

Installations filled with freon 125 can be used:

  • in warehouse or industrial premises where solid smoldering or non-smoldering materials and substances, textile and rubber products are stored; combustible liquids;
  • in archives, libraries, money vaults;
  • in museums;
  • in printing houses;
  • in server rooms, data centers, electronic data centers, transformer rooms, telephone nodes;
  • in cable installations.

Properties and features of freon 125

Freon 125 is a colorless gas (chemical name "pentafluoroethane", referred to as R125). It has the following physical and chemical properties:

  • low toxicity;
  • non-combustible;
  • ozone-safe;
  • molecular weight - 120 amu;
  • boiling point -48.5°C at atmospheric pressure;
  • liquid density 1219 kg/m 3 at 25°C;
  • vapor density 5.208 kg/m 3 under normal conditions;
  • own saturated vapor pressure 12.1 bar at 20°C.

If we compare freon 125 with other GOTVs (chladon 227ea, inergen, CO 2), it has the lowest boiling point, liquid density and the highest pressure of its own saturated vapors.

The properties of freon 125 regarding the physiological impact on humans and the environment are as follows:

  • LD 50 or semi-lethal dose, i.e. the average dose of R 125, which causes the death of half of the members of the test group, is less than 70%;
  • NOAEL - the level of non-detection of harmful effects - is equal to 7.5%;
  • LOAEL - the lowest level of exposure to a substance at which a harmful effect will be observed - 10%;
  • ODP - ozone depletion potential is zero;
  • GWP - Global Warming Potential (GWP) - is 3400.

The use of freon 125 is limited to those rooms in which people are present periodically, not constantly.

Features of fire extinguishing using freon 125

Freon 125, among other freons, is officially approved for use (SP No. 5.13130.2009). This substance in terms of extinguishing fires has the following advantages:

  • high efficiency - the elimination of the source of combustion occurs within 10–15 seconds after gas is supplied to the room;
  • safety for electrical equipment, including valuable, expensive units;
  • relative safety for personnel - when the installation is triggered, you should hold your breath and leave the room, however, there will be no negative health consequences;
  • the ability to store in a liquid state, which allows to reduce the amount of area for the GPU modules.

The mechanism for extinguishing the R 125 flame is chemical containment, suppression of the combustion reaction. Once in the fire, the gas decomposes, during which radicals are released and react with the primary combustion products. As a result, the burning rate instantly decreases until the fire disappears completely.

Among the fire fighting installations, gas fire extinguishing with freons occupies a worthy place. In the CIS, the name freon has taken root, and in the west the name freon. The long history of the use of these substances, since the thirties of the last century, has proven in practice their reliability and effectiveness. Of the ten gases permitted in Russia as , five are freons 23, 227EA, 125, 218, 318C. The remaining gases that are not included in the list of Code of Practice 5.13130.2009 "Fire alarm installations ..." must be approved for compliance with technical specifications and a specific project.

Application area

Fighting fire with water was often useless or dangerous. Instead of water, carbon dioxide was first used, then, with the creation of fire extinguishing agents of the freon series, they began to use gas fire extinguishing installations with freons.

Freons are used for volumetric, surface extinguishing and prevention of the formation of an explosive environment. With the help of station installations, they protect enclosed spaces, with fire extinguishers - small fires.

Freons for fire extinguishing are used in explosive premises, warehouses of fuels and lubricants, etc., as flame arresters. Their main advantage lies in the sparing effect on material values that have undergone a fire. They have been used in server rooms, data centers, aircraft and ships, archives, generator and transformer substations. Some are launched in the presence of people, which allows them to be used in museums, galleries, libraries and other public places. But the duration of a person's stay in the zone of action of these gases is limited to several minutes, depending on the concentration of the substance. Freon extinguishing system is used in conjunction with management and access control. The access control system determines the presence of personnel and gives exit commands indicating the evacuation route, followed by blocking doors, natural and forced ventilation systems.

Advantages and disadvantages

Freons are used in fire extinguishing agents to slow down and then extinguish the flame. They gained popularity due to their properties. Freons are dielectrics, which allows their use to fight fire in rooms with electrical equipment under electric current. Due to their high density in liquid and gaseous form, they penetrate the fire and act as a phlegmatizer and fire inhibitor.

At concentrations of 10%, flames are effectively extinguished. Can work at sub-zero temperatures. Wettability allows it to be used to extinguish smoldering materials. The possibility of storage in a liquefied state makes it possible to manage with smaller tanks in terms of volume and quantity. Able to extinguish the flame within 10-20 seconds, they can prevent the explosion of the gas-air mixture.

Freons have a number of disadvantages.

At temperatures above 600 degrees, they begin to release highly toxic gases that are dangerous to human life, but are harmless under normal conditions.

Many refrigerants (freons) have been discontinued due to the destructive effect on the ozone layer. They are saturated fluorocarbons that, after use, remain in the earth's atmosphere for decades. After the adoption of amendments to the Montreal and Kyoto Protocols, they are prohibited due to increased environmental hazard. By 2030, they will practically stop producing them.

Types of freons for fire extinguishing

Gas extinguishing agent freon 23 (trifluoromethane) is a non-combustible, low-toxic gas with zero ozone depletion potential. According to the danger of human exposure, it belongs to the fourth class. At temperatures above 600 degrees Celsius, it emits toxic gases such as phosgene. Freon 23 is approved for use in Russia. High fire extinguishing ability. It is stored in liquefied form in cylinders with pressure up to 150 bar.

Gas fire extinguishing freon 125 (pentafluoroethane) is used in residential and industrial buildings. The extinguishing agent used is a colorless, non-flammable and non-toxic gas with zero ozone depletion potential. Freon 125 is a thermostable gas with a fire extinguishing concentration of 9.8%. The maximum allowable concentration for humans is 10%. The excess is insignificant, therefore, it is used in the absence of people in the room. When a fire alarm sounds, you must leave the premises. High fire extinguishing ability. It is stored in cylinders with pressure up to 60 bar.

Freon 218 (octafluoropropane) has characteristics in terms of environmental friendliness, safety and fire extinguishing properties similar to other gases of the freon series. It is stored in cylinders with pressure from 20 atmospheres.

Freon 227EA (heptafluoropropane) can be used to extinguish a fire in rooms in the presence of people. It is environmentally friendly, has a zero indicator for the ability to destroy the ozone layer. Freon-227ea is a colorless, non-flammable, low-toxic gas. It is thermally stable, but at temperatures above 600 degrees it releases toxic substances such as phosgene. It is a good dielectric, which allows it to be used to extinguish fires in server rooms. It is stored in tanks designed for a pressure of 20 atmospheres.

Freon 318C (octafluorocyclobutane) in terms of safety for humans is the best among the gases of the freon series, which affects its price. Other characteristics are the same as for other freons allowed in Russia. Stored in low-pressure cylinders in liquefied form.

Freon exploitation

Freon 23 is stored in cylinders designed for a pressure of 150 atmospheres, the rest can be stored in cylinders for 60 atmospheres. The choice of one or another cylinder depends on the storage conditions and the requirements for the speed of delivery of the fire extinguishing agent to the fire site. Cylinders are stored at temperatures from -40 to +60 degrees. Direct sunlight must be avoided. In automatic fire extinguishing systems, a special device is provided for constant monitoring of the mass of gas. Some modules have a reusable lock-start device, which allows their reuse. Refueling is carried out at specialized and certified stations.

What modules use refrigerants?

For freon 23, a reservoir designed for a pressure of 150 atmospheres is used as a gas fire extinguishing module (GFP). MGP are used for storage and release of fire extinguishing agents on a fire alarm signal or manually. They are cylinders with shut-off and starting devices. The rest of the freon extinguishing modules use low-pressure tanks, in the range from 20 to 60 bar. The volume of tanks designed for freon gases ranges from 5.1 liters to 240 liters. Pressure vessels are produced in a seamless version.

The calculation of gas fire extinguishing begins with determining the specifics of the object, determining the type of fire extinguishing installation. It is necessary to comply with the requirements of regulatory documents. For example, the calculation of gas fire extinguishing freon 23 must necessarily take into account that it has a working pressure of 150 atmospheres, unlike other freons. Knowing that the fire extinguishing concentration of gas is above 30 percent, much more is required. Only specialists can take into account all the points. If properly designed, an automatic gas extinguishing system can be an economically viable fire protection option.

Refueling fire extinguishing cylinders with freon

    Gas fire extinguishing has an undoubted advantage over other types of fire extinguishing, because the gas used for extinguishing - freon 125, does not cause equipment corrosion, and the consequences of actuating the gas fire extinguishing installation are easily eliminated after ventilation. The consequences of water, powder and foam fire extinguishing are not so easy to eliminate. The above advantages should also include the range of operating temperatures of gas fire extinguishing - from - 400 to + 500, in other words, neither heat nor frost can adversely affect the installation.

    Gas fire extinguishing can be used in specialized premises where the installation of another fire protection option is fraught with serious material losses and loss of important information, for example:
    - premises for the storage of cultural property,
    - premises for the placement of technological equipment,
    - switchboards, including those under voltage,
    - diesel rooms, generator rooms,
    - premises with explosive atmosphere,
    - premises for the location of highly sensitive electronic equipment, etc.

    Use of Freon 125 in firefighting.

    The most commonly used gas in recent times, freon 125, is one of the safest gases. It has high thermal stability. An important advantage of freon 125 is that when it is used, the air is breathable for another 5 minutes, which allows people to evacuate from a dangerous room, and makes it easier for firefighters to enter the premises.

    According to the results of the last 4 years, freon 125 takes the first place in terms of use in gas fire extinguishing.

    Freon 125 (HFC-125):

    It is widely used to protect premises without a permanent stay of people;

    Ozone-safe, does not destroy the ozone layer, ozone depletion potential (ODP) = 0;

    The residual concentration of oxygen after the release of GOTV is 18 - 19%, which ensures free breathing of a person;

    Effectively provides fire extinguishing;

    Freon 125 is released within 10 seconds;

    A propellant is required to ensure pipe transport;

    Pressure control in the module is carried out by a manometer;

    High quality/price ratio;

    The normative fire extinguishing concentration for freon 125 is 9.8%.

    The maximum permissible concentration of freon 125 is 10%.

    The margin of safety in this case is a fraction of a percent (0.2%).

    This makes it possible not to receive serious damage to the health of a person who for some time (about 5 minutes) was in the room where the release of the gas fire extinguishing agent freon 125 occurred.

    Freon 125 is stored in high pressure modules.

    The propellant is pumped up to a pressure of 41 bar.

    The system can be modular or centralized.

    The modular system consists of individual cylinders placed next to a protected source of danger.

    A centralized system is a series of cylinders that can be provided with switchgears to protect several rooms from fire.

    The quality assurance system ensures the high quality of all components used in fire extinguishing systems.

  • The gas fire extinguishing composition Freon 125HP does not affect the ozone layer, is environmentally friendly, does not affect interior items, electrical equipment and material assets;
  • In addition, Freon 125HP has maximum thermal stability compared to other freons, the thermal decomposition temperature of its molecules is more than 900 ° C. The high thermal stability of freon-125HP allows it to be used to extinguish fires of smoldering materials, because at a smoldering temperature (usually about 450 ° C), thermal decomposition practically does not occur;
  • Freon 125HP is safe for people, tk. fire-extinguishing concentrations for freons are an order of magnitude less than lethal concentrations with exposure duration up to 4 hours. Approximately 5% of the mass of freon supplied to extinguish a fire is subjected to thermal decomposition, therefore the toxicity of the environment formed during fire extinguishing with freons will be much lower than the toxicity of pyrolysis and decomposition products;
  • Freon 125HP (Pentafluoroethane, C2F5H, Halon 25, FE-25, R125, HFC-125) can be used to extinguish:
  • - electrical equipment fires;
  • - fires of flammable liquids and gases (rooms for equipment and pump rooms);
  • - fires in rooms where expensive devices and equipment are concentrated (CED, operating rooms, etc.);
  • - fires in the premises of storage facilities.

Freon 227e

(HFC-227ea, FM-200)

It is a chemical flame retardant. The mechanism of fire extinguishing with freons consists mainly in the effect of this gas fire extinguishing agent on breaking the radical bonds of the physicochemical chain reaction of combustion, in suppressing the "active centers" of this reaction and creating a non-combustible environment in the protected volume.

Freon-227ea (trade name - HFC-227ea(FM200)) is no less safe than freon-125. But their economic indicators as part of a fire extinguishing installation are inferior to freon-125, and the efficiency (protected volume from a similar module) differs slightly. It is inferior to freon-125 in terms of thermal stability.

- it is applied to protection of premises with constant stay of people;

- ozone-safe, does not destroy the ozone layer, ozone depletion potential (ODP) is 0;

The residual concentration of oxygen after the release of GOTV is 18 - 19%, which ensures free breathing of a person;

- effectively provides volumetric fire extinguishing;

- does not conduct electricity;

It does not cause corrosion of metals and destruction of organic compounds, which makes it possible to refer it to the group of so-called "pure gases";

- chemically inert;
- release time 10 seconds;

- a propellant gas is required to ensure transportation through pipes;

- control of pressure in the module is carried out by a manometer;

- high quality/price ratio;

Freon 227ea (HFC-227ea, FM-200) It is a colorless, tasteless and odorless gas.

It is registered in NFPA 2001 and ISO 14520 as HFC-227ea and is marketed by the DuPont Group under the brand name FM200.

The normative fire extinguishing concentration for freon 227ea is 7.2%. The maximum allowable concentration (NOAEL) of freon 227ea is 10.5%.

The margin of safety in this case is a few percent (3.3%).

The residual oxygen concentration in the protected room after the release of gas is about 19%, which is sufficient for free breathing.

This makes it possible not to receive serious damage to the health of a person who for some time (about 5 minutes) was in the room where the release of the gas fire extinguishing agent freon 227ea occurred.

Freon 227ea- non-flammable, non-explosive and low-toxic gas, under normal conditions is a stable substance.

Freon 227ea stored in high-pressure modules in a liquefied state.
