Fuel consumption in an injection field. How to reduce field consumption

Niva 4×4 is equipped with an injection engine. Thanks to this, gasoline consumption in this car is slightly lower than in Niva models with carburetor engines. The latter, according to technical specifications, can consume up to 13.5 liters of gasoline per 100 km. Consumption on an injection engine, according to the technical documentation from the manufacturer, is only up to 9.1 liters of gasoline per 100 km. However, car owners assure that you should not rely heavily on these figures.

A large number of reviews indicate that consumption on a Niva 4x4 can often reach 14 liters of gasoline per 100 km. And this despite the fact that the car does not have any serious faults.

Gas consumption

In general, engine consumption figures that are quite high for a passenger car have recently increasingly pushed car owners to think about installing gas equipment on the Niva.

Gas consumption figures on the Niva 4×4 are ambiguous. There are no official numbers from the manufacturer on this matter, and car owners state different numbers. Just like with gasoline, gas consumption can be really low. If there are any malfunctions or terrain features that affect gas consumption, then the fuel can drain very quickly. So, consumption of about 14-15 liters per 100 km in urban driving mode is considered normal.

At the same time, consumption outside the city is approximately 11-12 liters. However, it happens that due to some kind of malfunction, consumption increases sharply and in suburban driving mode amounts to 20 liters of gas per 100 km. In the city, even more fuel is wasted.

Thus, if a Niva 4×4 has too much fuel consumption relative to the standards stated in the technical documentation, it is worth carrying out a full diagnosis of the car and identifying the reason why the fuel is running out so quickly.

What is fuel used for?

Even if everything is normal in the car’s equipment, fuel can still be consumed uneconomically. Thus, sometimes only 60% of the fuel burned is used to set the car in motion. It’s quite possible to save the remaining 40% if you follow simple rules:

  • Do not start driving without first warming up the engine. Driving in such conditions can consume 12% more fuel;
  • Don't turn your car's air conditioning on full blast. If you drive with the air conditioning turned on all the way, you can lose up to 15% of fuel;
  • If possible, close the windows when driving faster than 50 km/h. Such driving can take up an additional 4% of fuel;
  • Regularly check that your tire pressure is normal. Flat tires can cost you 4% of your fuel.

And we have already talked about the consumption of many other cars. Surely among you there are owners and drivers of the famous domestic SUV Niva. We promised to cover various and popular car brands. Considering the number of them on our roads, let’s take a closer look at what the fuel consumption of the Niva 2121 should be depending on the type of engine, and also whether it can be reduced.

Fuel consumption on a Niva with an injector engine will be slightly less than on a carburetor analogue. One of the most popular power units (or rather, almost the only one) is the 1.7 liter engine. On the highway it takes relatively little, for such a vehicle - only 9–10 liters. Despite the relatively small volume of the gas tank, it will be enough for long country trips up to 400 kilometers.

If you use primarily 5th gear, then fuel consumption can be reduced to an even lower value - 8 liters. This is facilitated by an injection engine, which is more economical compared to a carburetor engine. However, urban driving mode will be wasteful for the Niva owner, since here you can often spend 13 or 14 liters “per hundred”. And this is still in the warm season, because when driving it in winter, be prepared to increase consumption by another 2-3 liters. This is all due to frozen or slippery road surfaces, and, of course, the voracious power unit.

What can you say about Taiga's appetites?

A type of SUV under the tempting name “Taiga” is especially preferred among fishermen and hunters. Of course, fuel consumption will largely be related to driving style, time of year, and engine modification. The five-door version will require up to 13 liters in city mode, up to 11 in mixed mode and 9.5 liters on the highways.

In cases where the carburetor settings are correct, the reason for the increase in fuel consumption may be increased wear of the piston group parts.

How to save on fuel as a Niva owner

Now let’s talk about how you can reduce fuel consumption on a VAZ 2121, including with the 21214 engine, since the recommendations are typical. Please pay attention to the tips below:

  1. try to use various electrical equipment inside the car less often, for example, air conditioning, heated seats, lighting, playing music, etc.;
  2. By changing your driving style and eliminating sudden acceleration, you will reduce instantaneous consumption. The optimal speed should be 80–90 km/h;
  3. It is advisable to drive more on asphalt roads, since off-road the car will always “eat” more;
  4. Carry out engine diagnostics to understand if there are any malfunctions that affect actual fuel consumption.

Some owners of Niva 4 x 4 also say that it is not uncommon for consumption to be 14 or even 15 liters per 100 km traveled. By the way, I’ll give a review from a real owner

One of the main aspects of a car is the amount of gasoline consumed per 100 km. For VAZ-21213 this indicator has a double meaning. On the one hand, the Niva 21213 has lower fuel consumption than other SUVs. On the other hand, for a 1.7-liter engine, whose power does not exceed 90 hp, it could be lower.

Fuel consumption - passport data and real situation

According to the passport data, a Niva equipped with a carburetor has the following indicators for consumption of AI-92 gasoline:

Naturally, there is nothing like this in reality. The actual consumption is much different from the rated one, especially in winter. According to reviews of many “nivovods”, a consumption of 15 – 16 liters per hundred in winter (provided that AI-92 gasoline is used) is considered quite normal and even excellent. In summer it naturally drops to about 12-14 liters - this depends on the age of the car, the condition of the carburetor and a bunch of other factors. There’s no need to talk about off-roading - here even the most tuned engine can consume 20-30 liters - it all depends on the surface, tires, the skill of the driver himself, and so on.

What determines fuel consumption and how to reduce it?

There are several reasons why the engine becomes more power hungry:

  • The gasoline consumption of engines primarily depends on its condition, as well as on the condition of the carburetor. If the carburetor becomes clogged, consumption increases very significantly. The same thing happens if engine compression decreases;
  • The quality of gasoline is a very, very important factor. There is no need to refuel at some unknown gas station - and more gasoline will be consumed, and the fuel filters will have to be changed very quickly. It's better to choose a couple of really good gas stations and try to refuel there;
  • Take care of the cleanliness of the fuel system and regularly clean the jets;
  • If the tire pressure is less than required, the contact patch with the surface increases - accordingly, the engine has to spend more energy and gasoline;
  • Replace spark plugs regularly, especially when using AI-80 gasoline - their service life is up to 10,000 km.
  • Check the condition of the trampler, slider and wires;
  • Remove unnecessary elements from the body - they increase aerodynamic drag and gasoline consumption;
  • Use an economical driving style - there is no need to sharply accelerate and brake the car if you can move evenly, with smooth acceleration and braking by inertia.
  • It is worth mentioning and, but they do not bring the desired result.

In 2001, the VAZ-2121 underwent another restyling, which concerned exclusively the power plant. More precisely, the fuel system. Instead of a Solex carburetor, the car received an injection system - this not only reduced fuel consumption, but also slightly increased power and torque - in the VAZ-21214 it is 83 hp. and 129 Nm versus 82 hp. and 125 Nm for the VAZ-21213.

VAZ-21214 1.7, 1.8 injector

The car is equipped with a 1.7-liter 4-cylinder, 8-valve engine that develops a power of 83 hp. and a torque of 129 Nm. Instead of a carburetor, a distributed injection system of Euro-2 standard is installed. The engine is coupled with a 5-speed manual transmission and is still in production.

A version equipped with a 1.8-liter gasoline engine producing 94 hp and developing a torque of 139 Nm was produced in small series.

Reviews about fuel consumption VAZ 21214 1.7, 1.8 injector

  • Nikolay, Almaty. After purchasing my Niva in 2014, I immediately made almost a major overhaul - the car is from 2001, it is clear that it will not be in perfect condition. I immediately got confused - some of the spare parts were Chinese, they broke down very quickly, I had to replace everything again with originals. After that there were no problems - the cross-country ability is excellent, it can overcome any off-road conditions. Consumption is normal - 12 liters in the city, about 10 liters on the highway.
  • Dmitry, Novosibirsk. Since I don’t really drive the Niva in the city, I only go out into nature, I won’t say how much it consumes in the city - according to estimates, it’s a lot for such an engine. On the highway it comes out to approximately 7.9 liters per 100 km, in the forest from 13 to 25 liters. There are a lot of disadvantages in it - it’s very goaty, the engine is weak, there is no power steering - but it’s not a pity to kill for hunting and fishing, and that’s what I bought it for.
  • Alexander, Marx. I drive a VAZ-21214 Niva, 2011, 1.7 liter injection engine. After the purchase, I modified the chassis - I installed some of the components from Shnivy, and the cross-country ability increased even more. A weekend car - fishing, hunting, mushrooms, and in winter you can always go out without any problems. Consumption with an injector is normal - city up to 15 liters in winter, highway about 8 liters, I use 92 gasoline.
  • Ivan, Berdsk. The mileage of my Niva 1.7 injector is almost 120 thousand. When I bought it in 2011, it guzzled gas like hell - the problem was solved by reflashing the brain. Now my consumption in summer is 13 liters, in winter up to 16 liters. Considering that the A-92 can be refueled, I consider this consumption normal.
  • Alexey, Ryazan. If you need an unpretentious and reliable unit for trips out of town, into the forest, to the river, you won’t find anything better and cheaper than Niva. My friends take it with a carb, they say it’s more reliable and you can use any gasoline, but since I use it in winter, I took a fuel-injected VAZ-21214. Over the 10 years of ownership I have driven 112,000 km - I am completely satisfied with the car. Average consumption is 8-10 in summer, 13-17 in winter.
  • Timofey, Syktyvkar. I bought the car in 2011 from a dealership. Yes, let them spit in my face, but I took it purposefully in the showroom, and it was the only car we had. Now I already have FF3, but before that I skated purely on Niva for 4 years. Consumption – highway 10 l, city 15 l.
  • Nikolai, Tynda. I bought it with mileage - I immediately wanted to get a carburetor, but I couldn’t find anything worthwhile, they were all so worn out that I didn’t even want to bother with repairs, since it would have cost 4 times more than the car itself. At the end of March 2013 I found a good VAZ-21214 - an injection engine, a modified suspension from a Niva-Chevrolet, off-road tires. Now I drive it - consumption in the city is 14 liters (I changed to regular tires), on the highway - 10 liters.
  • Roman, Berezovsky. VAZ-21214 Niva, 2010. I think that this is the only normal car that is assembled at AvtoVAZ. Thank God they started installing an injection engine, because a carburetor in the mid-2000s is already a thing of the past. The main disadvantage of Niva is the bastard officials who, by hook or by crook, abdicate responsibility. And so the car is fire, consumption is 9 liters on the highway, 12 in the city, in winter it’s true up to 15 liters somewhere - you often have to warm it up.

Legendary 2131 model

The Niva, whose fuel consumption depends primarily on the specific brand of this car and its engine, is a popular and inexpensive Russian SUV. For example, the VAZ 2121 model from 1976 to the present time is equipped with a 1.6-liter 2106 engine, which has the following characteristics:

  • cylinder block - cast iron;
  • power supply - injector or carburetor;
  • engine type - in-line;
  • cylinder diameter - 79 mm;
  • four cylinders;
  • two valves per cylinder;
  • machine power - at 5400 rpm - 75 hp;
  • torque - at 3000 rpm - 116 Nm;
  • fuel - AI92;
  • motor weight - 121 kg;
  • oil consumption 0.7 liters per 1000 km;
  • the amount of oil in 2106 is 3.75 liters;
  • the amount of oil poured during measurement is 3.5 liters;
  • According to the factory, the engine resource is 125,000 km, in practice - up to 180-200 thousand km.

Different VAZ 2121 models and fuel consumption

Large trunk

The VAZ 2121 engine requires high-quality oil and sometimes consumes up to a liter per 1000 kilometers. Cheap analogues are inappropriate in this case, because they contribute to the expansion of the cylinder diameter by 0.15 mm for every 60,000 kilometers, which worsens the quality of the engine. In addition, incorrect oil viscosity directly affects fuel consumption, so it is better to follow the recommendations: for the 2106 engine, samples 5W-30, 10W-40, 15W-40, 5W-40 are suitable, in which the first digit indicates the lower temperature limit, and the second - top. Very viscous oils turn into a jelly-like mass in the cold, which the Niva’s oil pump may not be able to cope with.

When operating correctly, gasoline consumption on the Niva 2121 is 10.3 liters of gasoline per 100 km in the city, about 7.4 liters on the highway and about 10 liters per 100 km in the combined cycle.

More modern models 21213 and 21214 have carburetor and injection engines, respectively. They began to be produced in 1994, and they have the following characteristics:

  • cylinder block - cast iron;
  • four cylinders with two valves per cylinder;
  • cylinder diameter 21213 - 8.2 cm;
  • engine capacity - 1690 cm3;
  • power at 5200 rpm - 81 hp. With.;
  • torque at 3000 rpm. — 125 Nm;
  • engine weight - 117 kg;
  • suitable fuel - AI93;
  • engine oil volume - 3.75 liters;
  • when replacing, about three and a half liters of oil from the categories 5W-30, 15W-40, 10W-10, 5W-40 are poured;
  • engine life - according to the plant, about 80 thousand km, in life - up to 150 thousand km.

Injection 21214 “eats” more than VAZ 2121

Interior of a domestic SUV

The injector on 21214 has the following operating scheme: data on air flow, crankshaft movement, coolant temperature, engine detonation, fuel consumption, voltage in the on-board network, etc. is received from vehicle components to a number of sensors. After receiving the information, the control unit gives signals about the order of fuel supply, the operation of the ignition system, the diagnostic system, the operation of the idle air control. The injector changes injection parameters depending on the data received.

This system includes such components as sensors, a controller, the injector itself (nozzles), a fuel pump, and a pressure regulator. In it, the pump supplies fuel, the pressure regulator maintains the difference between the pressure in the injectors and the air gap in the intake manifold. And the ECU processes the information received from the sensors.

Injection engines of Niva 21214 cars, if not properly maintained, lose their efficiency, increasing fuel consumption, and often begin to stall. As a rule, the problem lies in dirty engine injectors, which cause poor mixture formation and atomization of gasoline. Cleaning the injectors can be done independently by purchasing additional materials worth about 500 rubles (including: a diamond wrench on “8”, a carburetor cleaner, a vacuum hose for the distributor, a syringe with an outlet diameter of 1 cm, an electrical cable with a toggle switch and a light bulb, rubber rings injectors, 8 pieces, O-rings for fuel pipes - 4 pieces).

At a car service center this service costs about 1,500 rubles. The injector is considered a good fuel injection system, but it is expensive, difficult to repair, requires high-quality gasoline, special diagnostic equipment and expensive repair maintenance. Therefore, many VAZ 2121 owners prefer a carburetor.

The Niva 21213 and 21214 models are more “gluttonous” than the Niva 2121. The engine on them consumes 11.5 liters in the city, 8.3 liters on the highway, and about 10.5 liters per hundred kilometers in the combined cycle according to the manufacturer’s version . In practice, for some taiga hunters, the car “eats” about 16 liters of gasoline, and in urban conditions - 13-14 liters per “hundred”.

Reinforced suspension

Engine 2130, first released in 1993, is found in the Niva 2131. Its technical parameters are as follows:

  • cast iron cylinders;
  • food - carburetor or injector;
  • in-line type;
  • four cylinders, each of which has two valves;
  • cylinder diameter - 8.2 cm;
  • Engine volume on model 2131 is 1.8 liters;
  • power at 5200 rpm - 82 horsepower;
  • torque at 3200 rpm is 139 Nm;
  • engine weight 122 kg;
  • oil is poured in the same volume as on the VAZ 2121 Niva;
  • oil consumption from 0.7 liters per 1000 kilometers;
  • service life according to the plant - 80 thousand km, according to users up to 180 thousand km
